Marvel's Joe Quesada Offers Details on DAREDEVIL Series

In a recent interview with CBR, Marvel's chief creative officer Joe Quesada talked a little bit about their upcoming Daredevil Netflix series. The series is currently being developed by Cabin in the Woods director and co-writer Drew Goddard. This will be the first of the four new series that are being made, and I can't wait to see what Marvel does with this character. One of the coolest things he had to say is that the show is being planned as essentially one 13 hour long movie!

Here's the part of the Q&A where Quesada discusses the Man Without Fear:

With the Netflix shows, we know a little bit about it at this point -- the list of shows, that "Daredevil" is the first one going into production, and that Drew Goddard is heading that series up as showrunner. Have you been working closely with the writers on that one? What's your level of involvement with "Daredevil"?

"I've been working very, very closely with the entire team on all levels of the show. I think everybody knows my relationship with the character of Daredevil, and how important the character is to me -- not just on an emotional front, but on a professional front. How DD brought me back here to Marvel, and how instrumental he was to even me being in this particular position I'm in today. I'm very involved with the show, as well as everything that we're doing with the Netflix shows. I'm incredibly excited, plus the dark and gritty noir world of DD and the Netflix characters, it's kind of where I live so it naturally attracts me to begin with."

It's fair to say a lot of people weren't satisfied with the last live-action "Daredevil." How much is the goal to really get it right this time, and maybe erase some of the negative thoughts people had with the past live-action Daredevil?

"Let me be clear, we're not going into this show with the idea of trying to erase the memory of anything that came before or really any preconceived notions whatsoever. We're going into the show trying to create something that's incredibly exciting, incredibly engaging, and will give our fans something that they love, something that's unexpected, something that's going to keep them coming back for more. That's really, ultimately, the goal of this: How do we produce a "Daredevil" TV show on Netflix, that's going to be viewed the way that people view content on Netflix, in a way that's going to be compelling, feels unique, while bringing something that is not only true to the character, but providing something unexpected as well."

Right now Marvel has both a show on a traditional network, "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," and multiple Netflix series in the works. What do you see from the creative side as some of the advantages of the Netflix format, and the "everything all at once" rollout that their shows get?

"One of the advantages is really from the planning stage -- obviously it's much easier to work with a smaller number of episodes than it is with a larger number of episodes. We can sit there and look at 13 episodes and plan it out as a very large movie. It makes seeing the bigger picture a little bit easier. You can't deny that there will be binge-viewing. You know that there are going to be some Marvel fans that when this show premieres, they are going to go on to Netflix, and they are going to sit there for 12 to 13-plus hours, and watch the entire thing all the way through... Even the way that you parse out information and reveals within the show can be different than you would on weekly TV. With weekly TV, you sit there and go, "The audience may not want to wait two or three weeks to get this particular bit of information." Whereas with Netflix, we might be able to hold onto a particular piece of information, because they may just watch it two hours later."

I'm extremely satisfied with what Marvel has been doing with their properties, and as long as they keep pumping out incredibly awesome content, I'm going to be a happy man. I have faith that Marvel will give us the adaptation of Daredevil that we've all been waiting for.

ALIEN Movie Artist H.R. Giger Has Died at the Age of 74

On a more somber note, iconic artist H.R. Giger has passed away after suffering a fall.

THR reported that the man who designed the Xenomorphs in all of the Alien movies died in a hospital on Monday after suffering a fall in his museum. Here is what they had to say about him:

"Giger's works, often showing macabre scenes of humans and machines fused into hellish hybrids, influenced a generation of movie directors and inspired an enduring fashion for 'biomechanical' tattoos."

Giger’s work is amazing to look at; it has a very hard but beautiful quality to it. His classic monochromatic, futuristic style is loved by fans all over the world and has inspired people to emulate his work via tattoos. This, to Giger, was the highest form of flattery. This is what he had to say in an interview with Seconds magazine in 1994 about his work:

"The greatest compliment is when people get tattooed with my work, whether it's done well or not. To wear something like that your whole life is the largest compliment someone can pay to you as an artist."

It is hard not to be impressed by Giger’s work. In every piece you can see the time and passion that was put into them. Every calculated detail is exactly what Giger intends to show us.

It is sad to see a true artist leave us, but his work lives on and can be enjoyed forever.

EDGE OF TOMORROW - Five New Featurettes

Universal Pictures has released five great new featurettes for their extremely cool looking sci-fi action film, Edge of Tomorrow. The first two focus on the two main characters in the film played by Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. The other three focus on and are titled "Reliving the Day," the "Exo Suit" that sees a lot of action in the story, and "Learning to Fight." The videos include footage from the film along with the cast and crew talking about their characters and the story.

The story unfolds in a near future in which a hive-like alien race, called Mimics, have hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, shredding great cities to rubble and leaving millions of human casualties in their wake. No army in the world can match the speed, brutality or seeming prescience of the weaponized Mimic fighters or their telepathic commanders. But now the world’s armies have joined forces for a last stand offensive against the alien horde, with no second chances. Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously demoted and then dropped—untrained and ill-equipped—into what amounts to little more than a suicide mission. Cage is killed within minutes, managing to take an Alpha down with him. But, impossibly, he awakens back at the beginning of the same hellish day, and is forced to fight and die again…and again. Direct physical contact with the alien has thrown him into a time loop—dooming him to live out the same brutal combat over and over. But with each pass, Cage becomes tougher, smarter, and able to engage the Mimics with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt), who has lain waste to more Mimics than anyone on Earth. As Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated battle becomes an opportunity to find the key to annihilating the alien invaders and saving the Earth.

The Doug Liman-directed film comes out on June 6th, and it looks like it's one of those movies that you have to watch on the big screen.

Dusty Shelf Book Review: THE POSTMORTAL by Drew Magary

I had a deep and tragic relationship with The Postmortal long before I ever read it. My brother was a big fan of author Drew Magary and begged me to buy him an advance copy at the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con. I met Magary, bought the book, and got it signed for him. Four months later my brother was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. I read The Postmortal two months after he died, so I brought a lot of my own intense emotions to the book.

Outside of his books, Magary writes a regular column called the Dick Joke Jamberoo. He uses all caps A LOT. He also writes a column called Funbag! in which readers send in really stupid questions and he answers them. If you can get past the stupid bullshit Deadspin readers are interested in, you’ll begin to realize that Magary is actually a very thorough thinker. He just usually confines his thinking to junk food and horrifying poop scenarios. (There are so many horrifying poop scenarios) But given a strict premise, in this case that humanity has discovered a cure for aging, his ability to think through every possible consequence of something creates a thoroughly grounded world.

The Postmortal, which has been optioned for a film, is set in the near future and follows John Farrell, a lawyer who gets the cure for aging when he is 27. The events of the book run for about seventy years, with a few major time jumps. Honestly, if we actually did discover a cure for aging, world events would probably play out exactly this way. Initially illegal, a black market flourishes while pro-cure and pro-death activists debate, extremists resort to terrorism, churches condemn it, the cure is legalized, and everything in our society is changed forever. Religion crumbles, marriage becomes irrelevant, and gangs of “terra trolls” maim and blind the ageless population as overpopulation and declining resources lead to government-led population culls and, eventually, war.

Magary is at his best writing about the experience of specific types of relationships. He writes about both sides of the father-son relationship really well. John’s physical reaction when he reconnects with an early crush is dead on. There’s a fantastic passage in which he describes the way proximity to your child feels like proximity to your favorite rockstar. And while his dialogue is sometimes a little clunky, he writes about women and their concerns far better than I was expecting. John’s sister is particularly well-drawn, and my first thought when I considered the implications of the cure was echoed by John’s roommate Katy, namely, “I’m going to get my period forever.”

My first time reading the book was a profoundly emotional experience. It was the last experience I shared with my brother, and given that the entire book is really about death, well, that’s a lot of feels. But revisiting the book recently, I realized my emotional experience came from what I brought to the book. The details are great, but Magary doesn't deal with the big, universal questions nearly as well. Towards the end of the book, our main man John says that he has finally realized… something. I think it’s that he should have married any one of the several very attractive women who were in love with him throughout the story, and maybe that he shouldn’t have feared death so much. But it's not entirely clear.

The Postmortal isn’t especially deep, but there is plenty of surface area to explore. And it’s pretty fascinating to watch immortality kill us all.

Terry Gilliam Wants John Hurt to Play Don Quixote

Terry Gilliam is slowly in the process of realizing his dream of bringing Don Quixote to life on the big screen. This is a project that he has gone through hell for over the last 30 years. It looks like it actually starting to take some shape, and he's now got the funding to make it happen.

The movie will be called The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, and a few months ago Gilliam released a new piece of concept art for the project created by Dave Warren

The director is currently getting deep into the casting process of the film, and he's looking at none other than John Hurt to fill the title role. Hurt is an amazing actor and perfect for this part. I would really love to see that casting happen.

Over the weekend, Hurt was part of a Q&A at the Derby Film Festival, and it was there that the actor revealed that Gilliam has at least asked him about the idea. He didn’t go into any details on the role or if he was in negotiations, but talking about it is a good start!

The movie will most likely start shooting sometime in 2015, and I imagine we'll have some official casting announcements in the near future. I'm a big fan of Gilliam's work, and this is a project that I've wanted to see since I first heard about it.

First Photo from THE WALKING DEAD Season 5

Rick Grimes is looking to cause some trouble in this first photo from The Walking Dead Season 5.  It seems like this image takes place shortly after the events of the Season 4 finale.

The last time we saw Grimes and the rest of crew, they were trapped in a big storage container by the people of Terminus, who seem to be a group of crazy cannibals. I seriously doubt any of these characters will find themselves being eaten. Rick plans on giving them absolute hell.

The series returns to AMC this fall! I love this series, and I can't wait for its return.

Sonic the Hedgehog is about to take on Superman and The Flash in a race in this incredibly awesome illustration created by Mauricio Abril. This piece of fan art is called "The Underdog," and it actually kind of made my heart melt a little bit. Sonic looks so damn determined! I know he's got the heart, but can he win against the two super fast heroes? I'm the kind of guy that likes to root for the underdog, so I'd like to see Sonic win the race. Do you think the hedgehog stands a chance?

The piece is a part of POPzilla's video game art show.

Kickass International Trailer for Scarlett Johansson's LUCY

Scarlett Johansson's sci-fi action thriller, Lucy, look like it's going to be a crazy cool flick. The film comes to us from director Luc Besson, and the movie is being billed as having one "of the toughest, most memorable female action heroes in cinematic history." We've got a great new international trailer for the film to help drive that point home.

The story centers on a woman who is accidentally caught in a dark deal, and "she turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic."

The movie also star Morgan Freeman and Analeigh Tipton, and it's set to be released on August 8th, 2014. I'm excited about this movie, and I'm looking forward to checking it out.

Screen Junkies has released a new Honest Trailer that focuses on the worst Godzilla movie ever made. Roland Emmerich's 1998 movie was the stupidest damn thing ever, and it's great to watch this funny honest trailer tear into it. After watching this it's hard to believe that a studio actually spent money on that piece of crap.

The King of the Monsters is stomping back into theaters, so it's time to (regrettably) relive Roland Emmerich's disastrous 1998 version of Godzilla. So charge up your atomic breath as we roast a movie that everyone wishes had stayed extinct.

This latest featurette for director Matt Reeve's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes focuses on the 3D used in the film. There's also some new footage from the film included. I'm not the biggest supporter of 3D, it really doesn't enhance the movie going experience or storytelling for me the way everyone who uses it claims it does. I just got to see a screening of Godzilla in IMAX 3D, and although the movie was extremely awesome, the 3D didn't really do anything for me. It's just a new standard for movies and a way for the studios to make a little extra money. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes comes out on July 11th!

GOTHAM - Behind the Scenes Featurette with New Footage

Over the last couple of weeks FOX has shown us a ton of great stuff for their new series Gotham. Now we have a featurette for the show that is over three minutes long. It takes us behind the scenes of the show, shows us more footage, and features the cast and crew talking about the new take on Batman universe. If you're excited about this show, then you have to watch this video. It definitely has some great stuff that is worth your time.

Everyone knows the name Commissioner Gordon. He is one of the crime world’s greatest foes, a man whose reputation is synonymous with law and order. But what is known of Gordon’s story and his rise from rookie detective to Police Commissioner? What did it take to navigate the multiple layers of corruption that secretly ruled Gotham City, the spawning ground of the world’s most iconic villains? And what circumstances created them – the larger-than-life personas who would become Catwoman, The Penguin, The Riddler, Two-Face and The Joker. GOTHAM is an origin story of the great DC Comics super villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. From executive producer/writer Bruno Heller (“The Mentalist,” “Rome”), GOTHAM follows one cop’s rise through a dangerously corrupt city teetering on the edge of evil and chronicles the birth of one of the most popular super heroes of our time.

The series is set to premiere this fall, and it looks like it's going to be incredible!

Release Date for Harry Potter Spinoff Movie FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM

release-date-for-harry-potter-spinoff-movie-fantastic-beasts-and-where-to-find-them

Warner Bros. has set a release date for their Harry Potter spinoff film, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. According to Exhibitor Relations, that date is November 18th, 2016.

The story takes place a number of years before the events of the Harry Potter books and films. It is loosely based on a book that J.K. Rowling wrote for charity. The film will tell an original story, and with it, Rowling will be making her screenwriting debut.

The book is a reproduction of a textbook owned by Harry Potter that was mentioned in the first Potter novel. The fictional textbook was written by a fictional magizoologist character named Newt Scamander. For those of you who aren't up to speed on the Potter universe, Magizoology is the study of magical creatures.

It was previously reported that this story will be turned into a trilogy of films. While talking about the story Rowling said,

"Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for 17 years, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world. The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, 70 years before Harry’s gets underway."

I rather enjoy the world of Harry Potter, and I'm excited that we are going to get at least three more films set in that magical fantasy universe.

After a month of rumors and speculation, screenwriter Roberto Orci is officially set to direct Star Trek 3 for Paramount Pictures and Skydance productions.

Orci worked on the scripts for the first two movies and is currently writing the story for the third one with J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay.

As you know, Abrams was unable to direct Star Trek 3 because he's going to be way too busy with Star Wars: Episode VII. He will be a producer on the film, though.

There are no plot details on the movie yet, but Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, and the rest of the crew are expected to reprise their roles.

This will be Orci's first film, but he's obviously very familiar with the story and characters. I think he'll do a fine job bringing this third Star Trek film to the screen.

Ridley Scott to Direct Matt Damon in THE MARTIAN

Ridley Scott is currently in negotiations to direct Matt Damon in a sci-fi space adventure film called The Martian.

The Cabin in the Woods director Drew Goddard was attached to direct the film at one point, but he left the project to work with Sony Pictures on their Sinister Six movie.

The movie is based on the novel by Andy Weir, and THR describes it as "being in the vein of Robert ZemeckisCast Away and Ron Howard’s Apollo 13 (both of which starred Tom Hanks), Martian centers on an astronaut who is stranded on a Martian colony and struggles to survive. Back on Earth, NASA tries to mount a rescue mission."

Scott and Damon should make a great team on a project like this. It really sounds like it could be a great flick, and it has the right talent to bring it to life. Here's a detailed description from the book:

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

The Martian will be Scott's 21st film. He's currently in production on his Moses epic, Exodus: Gods and Kings, which stars Christian Bale
