Jon Favreau Cast in IDENTITY THEFT

Iron Man director Jon Favreau is heading back in front of the camera to co-star in Universal Pictures' new comedy Identity Theft. He joins the previously announced cast of Jason Bateman, Melissa McCarthy, Amanda Peet, John Cho, Clark Duke and Maggie Elizabeth Jones.

Seth Gordon is directing the film which follows a man played by Bateman who is a victim of identity theft by McCarthy's character. There's no information on who Favreau will play in the film, but I've always enjoyed Favreau's acting work so it will be cool to see him up on the big screen again doing his thing!

Director Gary Ross To Trade HUNGER GAMES For HOUDINI

$

Director Gary Ross may have handed the Hunger Games franchise over to Francis Lawrence when he opted out of directing the sequel, Catching Fire; but it will be a battle of magic movies (not to be confused with movie magic) with both directors looking to be behind competing Harry Houdini films.
Ross is in talks to helm Summit's adaptation of William Kalush and Larry Sloman's The Secret Life of Houdini, The Making of America's First Superhero. The book is known for insinuating that Houdini acted as a spy for Britain, was in cahoots with police organizations, and was asked to be an adviser to Czar Nicholas II's court in prerevolutionary Russia.
The last draft of the The Secret Life of Houdini was penned by Noah Oppenheim. Summit's aim to make the film an "action-thriller featuring a character who is part Indiana Jones and part Sherlock Holmes" follows the trend of period set, martial arts/supernatural makeovers for historical figures (e.g. Abraham Licoln: Vampire Hunter; The Raven) which have been coming off the heels of Guy Rithchie's take on the not so historical figure of Sherlock Holmes... still a  badass though. Lawrences' Houdini pic over at Sony is aiming to be a more straight-forward biopic.
The race may be a little less exciting with Ross notoriously taking quite sometime between projects, directing Pleasantville in 1998 and Seabiscuit in 2003 before pleasing fans, critics, and the box-office with Hunger Games taking in over $600 million world-wide. So who knows when this will actually move forward.
Would you want to see Ross take on the action infused Houdini? Would you rather see a more straightforward biopic?

As expected it looks like Marvel's The Avengers is going to make an insane amount of money! Deadline is reporting that the movie could end up making $585 million dollars worldwide through Sunday. It could end up pulling in $160 million when it opens in North America this weekend and $425 million when it debuts in Russia and China, giving it the grand total of... complete awesomeness. I'm rooting for the movie, I want it to do extremely well, and I hope it ends up in the top 5 highest grossing films of all time, I'm just not sure which of the five spots it will land in.

Here's a new TV spot for the film for you to watch. It's a break down of what the critics are saying, basically the movie is insanely incredible, and your going to love it! You can read my review of the film here.

CHERNOBYL DIARIES - First Film Clip

$

Warner Bros. has released the first film clip for their new found footage horror film Chernobyl Diaries, which was written and produced by Paranormal Activity director Oren Peli. The clip features the young characters in the film starting to plan out their trip to the nuclear fallout area of Chernobyl, which makes a great setting for a horror movie! The clip is followed by a short trailer for the movie.

Here's the synopsis:

"Chernobyl Diaries" is an original story from Oren Peli, who first terrified audiences with his groundbreaking thriller, "Paranormal Activity." The film follows a group of six young tourists who, looking to go off the beaten path, hire an "extreme tour" guide. Ignoring warnings, he takes them into the city of Pripyat, the former home to the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor, but a deserted town since the disaster more than 25 years ago. After a brief exploration of the abandoned city, however, the group soon finds themselves stranded, only to discover that they are not alone...

The movie comes out on May 25th, 2012, and because I'm a fan of horror movies, I'll go and see it.

That Drew Struzan Doc We've Been Waiting for Needs Help

Over the last year or so we've been reporting on a new documentary based around legendary poster artist Drew Struzan called Drew: The Man Behind The Poster. It looks like it will be a great documentary especially for those of you like myself who really enjoy the art of movie posters. The doc includes interviews with George Lucas, Harrison Ford, Michael J. Fox, Guillermo Del Toro, Steven Spielberg and many more.

We recently received an e-mail in behalf of the film's director Erik P. Sharkey saying that the film has been completely shot and edited. But he needs a little help completing it. In the middle of the sound mixing phase they ran out of money. Up until this point the movie has been completely self financed, now they are looking for an additional $8,000 to complete and polish up the movie so it can fianlly get released.

If you're interested in contributing, and want some more information, head on over to the Indiegogo fundraising website: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/91958

Below you'll find the e-mail we recieved explaining the situation, as well as a clip from the film that includes an interview with Michael J. Fox.

With post production wrapping up, the director of “Drew: The Man Behind The Poster;” a new documentary feature film about movie poster artist Drew Struzan, explains how the film is so close, yet so far, from completion. As is often the case, the reason is money.

Director Erik P. Sharkey, has created his first crowd-sourcing fundraising effort to help offset anticipated costs and bring the film to the finish line.Sharkey explains, “On top of costs for technical services, other expenses, like legal fees, are going to be high. And the simple truth is we are out of money.” It was nearly three years ago when Sharkey and his film partners began production on their feature documentary, now in the final stages of post-production.

“We get so many emails from fans asking about the premiere, and we tell people we’re just as anxious as they are.But we are very, very close.” continues Sharkey.

Meanwhile, with picture locked, Christian Struzan and his team at XL Brand Media have delivered dazzling graphic work and pristine color correction to match up with a top notch sound mix, delivered by Zach Martin at Lucasfilm’s Skywalker Ranch. Editor Jeff Yorkes is also hard at work cutting a brand new trailer to be unveiled just prior to Comic Con San Diego.

“Drew: The Man Behind The Poster” concerns Drew Struzan’s life, craft and iconic portfolio, which include, among many others, the “Back To The Future,” “Indiana Jones” & “Star Wars” film series, as well as “The Thing,” “Harry Potter,” “E.T.,” along with artwork for the early “Muppet” films.Stories are told via an impressive lineup of Hollywood talents, including exclusive interviews with, among many others, George Lucas, Guillermo del Toro, Frank Darabont, Harrison Ford, Michael J. Fox, Alice Cooper, Michael Uslan, Thomas Jane, Sam Witwer, Bob Gale, Leonard Maltin, Carroll Spinney, Greg Hildebrant, Steven Spielberg and, of course, Drew Struzan.

Here's the Synopsis:

The journey spans Drew's early career in commercial and album cover art through his recent retirement as one of the most recognizable and influential movie poster artists of all time. Three filmmakers have united to bring this film to life; Greg Boas of Hefty, inc., Charles Ricciardi of Torino Pictures and Erik P. Sharkey of Sharkey Productions, assembling one of the most intriguing film lineups and crafting a comprehensive presentation about the artist, the art, the stories behind Drew’s most recognizable creations, as well as a never-before-seen insider’s examination of the industry and the profession of motion picture advertising.

Check out this awesome fan-made movie poster art for the classic 1967 Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, and Charles Bronson film The Dirty Dozen. The piece was designed by Grzegorz Domaradzki, and if you haven't seen this movie yet you've got to check it out!

It follows a US Army Major who is assigned to take a dozen convicted murderers and train them, then lead them into a mass assassination mission of German officers in World War II. It's a pretty badass movie.

Joss Whedon Describes His BATMAN Movie That Was Never Made

$

As everyone and their mother knows, The Avengers opens in the US this Friday. It's breaking records internationally as we speak, and it is definitely going to be one of the year's biggest films. (Like, so big that in a week, no one remember The Hunger Games.) Venkman loved the movie, calling it "the best superhero movie that's ever been made", and I also think it's a phenomenal piece of work that finally gives writer/director Joss Whedon a playground big enough to show his abilities to the world.

GQ Magazine just wrote a fantastic profile piece that describes Whedon's career, and it's one of the first true must-read pieces I've come across in 2012. In it, they mention not only Whedon's well-publicized attempt to get a Wonder Woman movie off the ground, but also a lesser-known effort to revitalize Batman after Joel Schumacher's sequels and before Nolan took a crack at the franchise. Whedon spoke a bit about his young Bruce Wayne that could have been, and describes a scene where a young Bruce saves a little girl in an alley similar to the one his parents died in:

"And he's like this tiny 12-year-old who's about to get the shit kicked out of him. And then it cuts to Wayne Manor, and Alfred is running like something terrible has happened, and he finds Bruce, and he's back from the fight, and he's completely fine. And Bruce is like, 'I stopped them. I can stop them.' That was the moment for me. When he goes 'Oh, wait a minute; I can actually do something about this.' The moment he gets that purpose, instead of just sort of being overwhelmed by the grief of his parents' death."

As with most things Whedon-related, that sounds excellent. I'm glad Nolan got a chance to make his Batman films, but I think everyone will agree after seeing The Avengers that Whedon has earned the right to direct whatever movie he wants in Hollywood. Let's hope he's still interested in Wonder Woman...or, as Blastr suggests, perhaps he could provide a new take on the Batman series after Nolan finishes up with The Dark Knight Rises.

What do you think off Whedon's Batman sequence, and what would you like to see him direct next?

ALF Movie Being Pitched to Studios

$

You've gotta be kidding me. ALF, the loveable (?) alien puppet creature who starred in his own sitcom back in the 1980s, is apparently having some sort of comeback, or so creator Paul Fusco would have us believe.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Fusco spoke about the history and legacy of the character, and I'd imagine it would be entertaining if you were a fan of the show. (I was not.) And despite THR's statements to the contrary, it seems that Fusco is a bit off his rocker. Just listen to the way he talks about ALF, a fictional puppet that he himself voices and operates:

When I used to write an episode and couldn’t come up with a line for ALF, I needed something really funny, I would actually ask ALF," Fusco explains during a wide-ranging conversation with The Hollywood Reporter. "I would actually put the character on, and the character would just tell me what the line was.

Yikes.

In a time when nostalgia is king in Hollywood, Fusco believes that now is the time for ALF to make a return to the public consciousness, and more specifically, he wants some time on the big screen:

I think the timing is right. That’s a big important thing, timing,” he says, quite confident in his prediction. “There have been movies out there of characters that I didn’t think were on the same parallel as ALF that got movies made, so I think it’s time. I think it could be a home run on a lot of levels.

A home run? You're out of your mind, dude. Nobody cares about ALF anymore. The biggest segment of an audience that goes to the movies is young people with money, and do you think they're going to care about an ALF movie? The Muppets could pull it off because they're actually a beloved franchise and had multiple movies to their name before Jason Segal and Nick Stoller brought them back.

I obviously think this is a terrible idea, but that's because I didn't like the show. Do we have any ALF fans that read the site, and if so, do you think an ALF movie would still be entertaining in 2012/2013?

This is an awesome art series created by Andy Fairhurst called When I Grow Up I Wanna Be... (Insert superhero name here). It features the silhouettes of little kids as their favorite superheros. I love the style and feel of these. They remind me of how I use to feel when I was little kid wanting to be a superhero. Superheroes I wanted to be when I was growing up included Batman, Captain America, and Superman. What superhero did you want to be when you were a kid?

G.I. JOE: RETALIATION - What's the Real Reason Behind the 9 Month Delay?

$
0
0

Yesterday news broke that G.I. Joe: Retaliation was going to get a very long nine month delay. It was supposed to be released next month on June 29th, but now we won't get to see it until March 29th, 2013. It was initially revealed that the reason behind this was so that they could convert the film for 3D. I think the whole 3D thing is just something to cover up a bigger issue. After all, Paramount Pictures could have and should have made this decision months ago, not at the last minute. Part of the reason is reshoots.

Today we've learned from Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson that they will be doing some more shooting. Here's what he had to say via his twitter...

It will be. Designing new scenes to enhance 3D. RT: @JimmyinGA: Was looking forward to GI Joe next month. Hope the 3D is worth the wait.

So this confirms that they'll be shooting new scenes for 3D, but most of the film will still obliviously be done in post. There's also some rumors flying around out on the web that Paramount is also using the time try and get Joseph Gordon-Levitt back on board as Cobra Commander, which I think is ridiculous. The reasoning being this is that Gordon-Levitt will be a much bigger star by they time the movie comes out than he was when he made the first movie. If this is true I imagine it will only be for some voice-over work.

There's also rumors out there saying that the movie sucks ass, which is hard for me to hear because the trailers we've seen look freakin' awesome! Someone who went to a test screening of the film told AICN that the movie is "nonsensical" and "worse than RISE OF COBRA".... yikes! That's not good. So perhaps there's even more of a reason for the reshoots than just 3D.

AICN speculates that maybe the studio "didn't realize they had a bad movie on their hands until they got it in front of audiences, which was rather late in the game. Therefore, this was their chance to pull the plug to rework and retool the movie." That makes sense, there's also rumors that they want Channing Tatum to have a bigger role in the film. Of course Paramount will never reveal what's really going on, but a nine month delay at the last minute is sure to raise suspicions.

There's a big chance that the G.I. Joe movie we see next year will be very different than the cut they planned on releasing next month. I guess we'll never know unless you've already seen the first cut of the film.

THR also recently posted an interview conducted in March in which director Jon Chu talks about the decision not to shoot in 3D...

THR: How was it decided not to shoot the film in 3D?

Jon M. Chu: There was a point where we were talking about it when I first came. It seemed like a natural thing, but I told them, “I know 3D. This is what we need. If we’re going to do 3D, we’re going to do it right.” It had a certain price tag to it, and I was like, if you guys are down I'm down, but I do need more time to do it right. And they were about to do it but they cut it just a little bit short, and [I said,] “if you guys are going to cut it short there is no point. Let’s make a movie -- let’s go for it and we’ll go all out. And we shot on film, super-35, and I thought this may be one of the last times I get to shoot on film, and it was actually kind of freeing. I mean, I love 3D and I think there is a lot you can do with it, but there is something to be said about just not waiting for anything. You’re just going. We shot so much film. I mean I think we shot 1.2 million feet of film.

This movie really didn't need to be in 3D, but it's going to happen. And it's the perfect cover for what is really going on behind the scenes. What do you think about all these rumors and speculation?

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES - More Cool New Photos Released!

Here's some more great new photos from Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises, which is set to explode in theaters on July 20th, 2012. It's looking like we're going to start seeing just as much material form The Dark Knight Rises that we ended up seeing for The Avengers, which means you'll probably be seeing an average of 2 to 3 posts a day featuring Dark Knight awesomeness! Hopefully nothing cool is spoiled in the process.

So here are six new photos from the film! The one above with Batman and his new vehicle comes from the TDKR Facebook page, and the five below are from Empire Magazine. It's really kind of sad that this will be Nolan's last Batman film.

Here's the Synopsis:

Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ "The Dark Knight Rises" is the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. The screenplay is written by Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan, story by Christopher Nolan & David S. Goyer. The film is produced by Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Charles Roven, who previously teamed on “Batman Begins” and the record-breaking blockbuster "The Dark Knight." The executive producers are Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Kevin De La Noy and Thomas Tull, with Jordan Goldberg serving as co-producer. The film is based upon characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. Batman was created by Bob Kane.

Three new images have been released for Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man. One of them includes a new shot of The Lizard looking through a window. At this point I'm sure everyone's made up their minds about whether or not they're going to see this movie. I for one am extremely excited about it, regardless of what I've heard. As long as I'm entertained I'll be happy.

The film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Denis Leary, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, and Sally Field. It hits theaters on July 3rd, 2012 in 3D. Do you like the design of The Lizard for this movie?

Here's the Synopsis:

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr Curt Connors (Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

Anthony Hopkins to Play Villain in RED 2

Anthony Hopkins wants to join the cast of Summit Entertainment's Red 2! He would be taking on the role of the villain in the story named Edward Bailey. They are currently trying to figure out how to make it work with the scheduling so he can do it. The actor is already committed to reprising his role of Odin in Thor 2 which is shooting around the same time. Hopefully they can work something out, because it would be great to see Hopkins as a villain again.

Red 2 is set to be directed by Dean Parisot, and stars Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Byung Hun-Li. Hopkins is currently playing Alfred Hitchcock in a movie about the making of Psycho.

I watched the movie Heart's of Atlantis yesterday, and forgot how awesome Hopkins was in that wonderfully made film. If you haven't seen that movie yet you should check it out!

Have you worn out your Ecko Star Wars Hoodies already??? Or do too many people have 'em? If you're lookin' to get a jump on the other Star Wars fanatics out there, MadEngine will be releasing 5 new Star Wars themed hoodies for sale on 08/29/2012. Just in time for the cool down! These are just photoshopped designs so I can't really throw down a solid comparison to the Ecko ones. The R2-D2 one is pretty sick though. I don't think I've seen a properly done R2 hoodie before. I'm a short guy, so it's a bit easier for me to summon my inner midget and wander around sweaty, in the dark, not knowing where I'm going... it's the most authentic R2-D2 experience you can get!!! That, or climb into a trash can and make robot noises. Your choice.

Will you be picking one up? What other Star Wars characters would you like to rock as a hoodie?

Vin Diesel's THE MACHINE to be Directed by Peter Segal

$

Get Smart director Peter Segal is in talks with MGM to direct the Vin Diesel action film The Machine. The movie is based on an "original concept" written by Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant. In the story Diesel plays "a human-like machine created in secrecy by the Pentagon as the world's first true ultimate weapon. Two decades after the government halted the project for unknown reasons, a child finds and befriends the machine."

Children befriending robots is nothing new, but it will be interesting to see what kind of story they build around the concept. Segal's already attached to direct a couple of other projects, so who knows if he will be able to take this on. As of right now he's attached to develop Grudge Match and Bleach for Warner Bros. If he does end up taking on The Machine it probably wont happen until he's finished developing those projects.

Segal has made some good films in his career, mostly comedies, but nothing that has completely blown me away. Not sure if he has it in him. The films that he has lined up are unlike anything he's done before though, so I'm interested in seeing how he does with them.
