The Evolution of Batman Films Art Series by Jeff Victor

0
0

Jeff Victor is a talented artist I have been following for some time now. Over the last month he has been creating a series of cartoon style art that pays tribute to every Batman movie ever made, from the 1966 Batman film to The Dark Knight Rises in 2012. This is one of my favorite art series that Jeff has done, and each illustration includes a note from the artist about his thoughts on the film.

Hey guys, thank you for such an enthusiastic response to the Evolution of Batman art! I've had a poster printed and it's now currently up for sale at my webstore. It is 18"x 24", and printed on beautiful silky archival paper. It would look great in anyone's personal Bat-cave. Limited edition of only 300.

If you want to buy a print featuring all of the art you see below, then click here.

"Hey guys! This is really exciting. I've been working for weeks on my biggest "Evolution" ever! This time it's the entire Batman theatrical movie saga, featuring not only Batman, but the main baddies from each film as well! I'll upload one or two a day. After they're all posted, I'll reveal the end product, a beautiful art print with all the characters on it, measuring 18"x24". Stick around, you won't want to miss it!"
"In summer 1989, Tim Burton's Batman arrived and took the world by storm. At the time the only other major superhero movies released in theaters had been the Superman films, whose quality was diminishing rapidly. Batman had been a kitchy fad in the 60's, but had now gone back to his roots as a dark avenger of the night. Batman introduced the concept of superheroes wearing black rubber suits instead of tights, a costume conceit that still persists to this day. Considered very dark and unsuitable for young children at the time of its release, Batman shocked many parents expecting Adam West style antics. But things were about to get even darker..."
"1989's Batman was a massive hit. A sequel was greenlit, and Warner Bros allowed director Tim Burton to fully indulge himself in Batman's dark tone and vile villains, resulting in Batman Returns. Unfortunately, the dark and violent tone of the film backfired in a major way. While the movie was a commercial success, it gained much notoriety as being TOO dark and gruesome. Burton and star Michael Keaton left the franchise, while Warner Bros reversed their decision to make Batman grim and gritty and instead turned the caped crusader 180 degrees into the realm of campy farce. Brace yourself, Batfans. Things are going to get rough."
"Director Tim Burton was out, and now it was Joel Schumacher's turn to helm the next Batman movie. The result was Batman Forever. Arriving in 1995, it marked a return to more of a lighter, campier style, similar to the 60's TV show. Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones played the baddies, each competing to see who could chew more of the scenery. Despite grumblings by comic fans, the movie made a ton of money, and Warners decided to go all in on with this campy style. As we'll see, this proved absolutely disastrous."
"So we've come to it at last. Batman and Robin. The absolute nadir of not only the Batman franchise, but widely considered one of the worst films ever made. Warner Bros spent a fortune on this film, and tried to cash in on as much merchandising as possible. Unfortunately, the movie was a campy, jokey disaster. Comic fans hated it, the public hated it, and even the stars and director all but apologized for it. The reception was so toxic that it all but killed comic book movies for three years. Batman needed a fresh start, badly. Luckily, help was on its way..."
"Universally hated by just about everyone, Batman and Robineffectively killed the comic movie for a few years. However, after the success of the X-men and Spider-man films, WB decided to give Batman another shot, rebooting the franchise from scratch. Hiring director Christopher Nolan proved to be a very wise choice, as his more realistic version of Batman seemed to be just the things fans were hungry for. Batman Begins was a solid hit, earning critical praise as well. But the strongest Batman film yet was just around the corner..."
"In 2008, WB released what is arguably not only the best Batman movie ever, but the single best superhero movie ever made: The Dark Knight. Received enthusiastically by fans and critics, many described it as elevating the superhero movie genre. Many other reboots, similar in tone were attempted in the wake of Dark Knight, but none captured the lightning in the bottle that this film did. Anchored by an incredible Joker performance by Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight is a milestone in blockbuster filmmaking."
"The Dark Knight was a bonafide smash hit. How do you follow it up?The Dark Knight Rises was a bold attempt, but due to many strange plot inconsistencies, and an overall less interesting main villain, the story never seemed to quite gel. It has it's many admirers, but overall it didn't seem to end the series on a high note.

"So that's it guys....done! WHEW. Thank you guys for liking, sharing, and commenting on this series. It's been a real labor of love, and I hope you enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed making it."

First Full Trailer for THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO!

first-full-trailer-for-thunderbirds-are-go1

Over the last few months we’ve gotten a lot of promo material for the upcoming rebooted series Thunderbirds Are Go! There’s been a lot of teasing of what this series will be like, but today we have the first full trailer for you to watch. I’m not the biggest fan of the CG character designs. I understand they wanted to capture that old-school marionette feel, but I think these updated characters could have been designed a little better. I do love that all the sets are practical models that were built for the series, and I think it will be fun watch.

Featuring effects by Weta Workshop, the iconic series is coming back and features a cast led by Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) as Lady Penelope and David Graham (“Thunderbirds” 1965) reprising his role as chauffeur and International Rescue agent Parker.
Unstoppable inventor Brains will be voiced by Kayvan Novak, while Tracy brothers Gordon and John are both played by Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Love Actually, Game of Thrones). Rasmus Hardiker voices both the youngest and oldest Tracy brothers, Alan and Scott. The fifth Tracy brother, Virgil, will be played by David Menkin. Tracy Island matriarch Grandma Tracy is voiced by Sandra Dickinson and master villain The Hood is played by Andres Williams.
Thunderbirds Are Go! will feature new characters including Kayo, the Tracy brothers’’ friend and fellow island resident, who will be played by Angel Coulby, and Colonel Casey voiced by Adjoa Andoh (Doctor Who). This re-invention of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson’s much-loved series will be produced using an innovative mix of CGI animation and live-action miniature sets.

Does this look like a show you’d watch?

This is our first look at the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens prequel comic from Marvel called Shattered Empire #1

The story will reportedly be told from the perspective of C-3PO and is said to take place right after the events of Return of the Jedi. There’s really not much more information than that, but I can't wait to see what they’ve come up with for this story.

Star Wars: Shattered Empire #1 will be released in September, and it's part of the recently announced Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens book series that you can read more about here.

Thanks to Star Wars.com for the art.

Josh Gad Cast in Disney's Live-Action BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

Actor Josh Gad seems to have a pretty solid relationship with Disney. He provided the voice of Olaf in Frozen and was recently confirmed to reprise the role in Frozen 2. Now he’s been cast in the live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast.

He will play Le Fou in the film, the goofy and loyal sidekick of Gaston, who will be played by Luke Evans. Gad is the perfect actor to take on the character, and it makes complete sense that Disney would cast him.

Gad will also join Emma Watson (Belle) and Dan Stevens (Beast/Prince) on the project. The movie is being directed by Bill Condon, and it tells the story of "a young woman who takes her father's place as a prisoner in a monstrous being's castle, only to fall in love with the creature who turns out to be a prince."

According to THR, the studio is going to make a very close adaptation of the 1991 animated film. They aren’t looking to give it a wild new makeover like they did with Alice in Wonderland or Maleficent. The recent live-action Cinderella film followed the story of the original animated film pretty closely, and I thought it worked out wonderfully.

Gad will next appear this summer opposite Adam Sandler and Peter Dinklage in Sony Picture’s Pixels, which will see classic arcade game characters invading the world.

Some Guy Wants to Make Lightsaber Duels an Olympic Sport

Darren Sherman has started a campaign to try to make Lightsaber duels an Olympic sport. He has released a fun video giving us all of the reasons why Lightsabers need to be included in the 2016 Olympic games in Rio. The most compelling argument he makes is when he points out all of the other ridiculous events that have been included in the Olympics over the years.

Lightsabering is the fastest growing sword sport, with millions of fans across the globe. This noble and iconic sport deserves to be an official event at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio!

Look, we all know that Lightsabering will never be in the Olympics, but if it were… I’d watch it! Would you!?

New FLASH GORDON Movie Might be a Sequel to the 1980 Film

new-flash-gordon-movie-might-be-a-sequel-to-the-1980-film

Last year it was reported Star Trek 3 writers JD Payne and Patrick KcKay were hired to write a script for a Flash Gordon reboot that 20th Century Fox is developing. I think that this is an awesome franchise that is actually ripe for a reboot, but apparently the plan is to develop it as a sequel to the 35-year-old film, which just seems weird. But Disney did it with Tron, so maybe it could work.

This news comes from original Flash Gordon movie star Sam J. Jones during an interview with Den of Geek. When he was asked if there were any sequels planned, he said,

“That was then, but up to date now Matthew Reilly, VP of production at Fox Studios, acquired the screenplay rights to Flash Gordon last year, and he hired [Predator/ Chronicle/ Man From U.N.C.L.E producer] John Davis and his staff to write the script. They're looking to bring out a sequel actually. I met with Matt, we're in talks about that. I'm very excited. A lot of people over the years, including Stephen Sommers and Neil H Moritz, have acquired the screenplay rights, but for whatever reason they did not do a follow up on the option. So I'm very excited about it.”

The actor was then asked how he would be used in the movie, and he said,

“However they want to use me, I'm very excited. I told Matt, however he wants to use me, keep one thing in mind: whatever a younger, leading man can do, I cannot only match him, I can do more! If he does 20 pull-ups, I can do 30 pull-ups. If he can do 100 push-ups, I can do 150 push-ups. Just keep that in mind!”

It sounds like he's pretty up to date on what is going on with the project. However, it was previously reported that the "pitch goes right back to the original Raymond comic strips and sidesteps any association with the movie, and even the serials." The idea was "to reclaim Flash Gordon from his current reputation in the way that Tim Burton redirected the public conception of Batman."

Things seemed to have changed since the initial report on this project. As interesting as a sequel might be, I still think that starting from scratch on this franchise would be a better way to go. What do you think?

James Gunn on Why Baby Groot Didn't Want to Get Caught Dancing By Drax

james-gunn-on-why-baby-groot-didnt-want-to-get-caught-dancing-by-drax

Everyone seemed to really enjoy the scene at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy where baby Groot was dancing. There's a reason why Groot stopped dancing when Drax looked over in his direction, and it's because of a scene that ended up being deleted from the movie.

Director James Gunn recently appeared on Doug Loves Movies, and it was there that he revealed why Groot didn't want to get caught dancing by Drax. Gunn explained,

“There was actually a scene that we cut from the movie where big Groot was dancing to 'Livin’ Thing' by ELO., and it wasn't such an elaborate dance. It was more that he was just moving up and down like this, and Drax was dismissive and gave him this look like he was a loser when he did that.”

This would better explain the death stare that Drax kept giving Groot. Gunn went on to joke that the first thing Drax would do if he were mayor of a town is outlaw dancing.

“Dancing is ludicrous to Drax. I don’t think he understands it. If Drax owned a town, if he was a mayor, the first law would be no dancing. But yeah, so at the end of the movie, little baby Groot didn't want to get caught dancing, because he would kill him.”

I guess Drax must have really hated that “dance off” with Star-Lord and Ronan at the end of the movie. It's a good thing he didn't go ballistic and kill Star-Lord because of it! That would have been an interesting ending to the film.

An amusing full trailer has been released for the LEGO Jurassic World video game, and it looks like a lot of fun. I really enjoy the silliness that LEGO brings to these kinds of games. The game will take players on an adventure through all four films in the franchise including Jurassic ParkThe Lost World: Jurassic ParkJurassic Park III, and the highly-anticipated Jurassic World. This first trailer puts the focus on the film that started it all.

In the game, players will be able to collect precious amber, which contains dinosaur DNA to create and customize species. And, for the first time in a LEGO game, players will be able to play as LEGO dinosaurs, including dinosaurs from the “Jurassic Park” series and from the upcoming Jurassic World film. Populate and explore Isla Nublar and Isla Sorna by putting your unique dinosaur creations in to paddocks as you complete special Free Play missions.

LEGO Jurassic World will be available for the Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, and Windows PC on June 30th.

STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE - Explanation of What It Could Be

star-wars-rogue-one-spinoff-film-explanation-of-what-it-could-be

Last week it was announced that the Star Wars spinoff film being directed by Gareth Edwards will be called Star Wars: Rogue One. Since then fans have been speculating what exactly the movie will be about. We previous heard rumors that one of the standalone films could focus on the adventures of an X-Wing squadron, and that this film would be about bounty hunters hired to steal the plans for The Death Star. Maybe it will be a combination of the two, or maybe these will be separate movies. Nothing has been confirmed at this point, but Disney CEO Bob Iger did say that the events that unfold will "go well beyond the core Star Wars saga."

Mr. Sunday Movies has released a great video breakdown explaining what Star Wars: Rogue One could be about. It gives us a little backstory on the X-Wing squadron and then speculates about what we might see in the movie. After you watch the video, let us know what you would like to see in the upcoming film.

Interesting New Details on the FRIDAY THE 13th TV Series

interesting-new-details-on-the-friday-the-13th-tv-series

Some new information has surfaced regarding the Friday the 13th TV series that was announced last year. The info comes from Fridaythe13thfranchise.com, who attended the Monster-Mania convention recently in New Jersey. It was there that franchise creator Sean Cunningham spilled the details.

The new TV series is being written by Bill Basso (Terminator) and Jordu Schell (Avatar), and we previously learned that the story would re-imagine "Jason in multiple time periods." It sounded like an interesting series concept, and here are some more details about what we can expect from the series.

"Sean Cunningham confirmed interest from the CW in regards to pickup for the tv show. According to him, the basic premise focuses on the REAL city of Crystal Lake, and the effect that the serialized films had on its real life counterpart. This allows them to reimagine Jason in a more grounded reality, as the films would be based off the real life killings that took place at the Camp. (ie, both the Hockey Masked Jason and a more serious backwoods inspired killer will be making appearances throughout) "

That's incredibly intriguing, and it gives the character, setting, and franchise a whole new and very meta dynamic. I think the concept is actually pretty fantastic. I like how the story will center around this town and how the movies have affected it and the citizens who reside there. It's a more creative and interesting way to take on this material, other than just focusing on the slasher aspect of things. This updated idea gives them a lot of room to play with.

I'm also curious to see how they handle Jason and this backwoods-inspired serial killer, especially since Jason will be a fictional character within the storyline. I'm not quite sure how he’s going to show up outside of movie film clips, but the crazed murderer who inspired Jason will be seen throughout the series. Maybe he will sport the iconic hockey mask, or have some kind of hideous appearance like Jason. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Those are the only details we have so far, but we will keep you informed as more info comes available. In the meantime, let us know what you think about the direction they are taking the series.

Fantastic Nightwing-Inspired Web-Series: GRAYSON: EARTH ONE

fantastic-nightwing-inspired-web-series-grayson-earth-one

I've got a couple episodes of a new web series for you to check out called Grayson: Earth One. The series is inspired by Nightwing a.k.a. Richard Grayson, and it's set in a "new continuity on a new Earth separate from the DC Universe, freeing it from continuity restraints." This is really a fascinating series that I think you'll all enjoy, and it's really well made.  Here are some additional details on what the series wants to accomplish:

Grayson: Earth One season one is a non profit six episode season dedicated to exploring the origin story of the DC character known as Nightwing -- but with a twist. The twist being that Richard Grayson has never had the good fortune of being adopted as a child by Bruce Wayne, thus never becoming the boy wonder. Instead, we have a Richard Grayson that had to fend for himself on the unforgiving streets of Gotham and, even worse, the streets of Bludhaven. A character that has to overcome years of dog eat dog mentality to become a selfless and kind individual. To ultimately fulfill his destiny and become a HERO.

Of course, changing that single event within Richard Grayson's life sends a ripple across the entire DC universe. It changes the history of characters such as Bruce Wayne, Barbara Gordon, Helena Bertinelli and their adversaries too.

Why is change a good thing? Simply put, we wanted to tell a story that involves characters that are beloved, but also wanted a story that the audience could not predict based its iconic source material. We would also love to attract people that had no previous interest in the comic book world by grounding these characters into situations that they could relate to. We look forward to creating a new fan base following these awesome comic book characters that we grew up with.

The series comes from the YouTube channel P3Series, and I enjoyed what this series had to offer; it's one of the best fan series that I think I've seen. I was really impressed with how this turned out. You can check out the first two episodes of the series below. The first episode was released back in 2013, but the second episode was just released, so I thought I'd just post them together in case you never saw the first one.

Here's the synopsis for the next episode, "The Boy and The Bullet."

This jaw-dropping second chapter resumes moments after the events of episode 1. It’s follows a 17 year old car thief named Jason Todd, whom in another life, become the second Robin. Instead, Jason is left to navigate America’s most dangerous city in search for purpose, safety and a family to call his own. Unfortunately… He finds one.

Details On How Batman Will Fit in With SUICIDE SQUAD

Thanks to El Mayimbe from Latino-Review, we've had some really cool updates on director David Ayer's Suicide Squad film. You can read about Deadshot's role in the film here, and some interesting information he provided about Jared Leto's Joker here.

He's back with some additional intel, and this time it focuses on how Batman will fit in with the film. I should probably throw out a SPOILER warning just in case because the information seems like it's crucial to the story, even though it's small. So if you don't want to know, stop reading now.

"According to sources, in the film Batman is some sort of big boogeyman that the government REALLY hates. Get this, prior to the events in #BatmanvSuperman, THE JOKER is the only one to really ever meet him or know him and that's why he's so important to Amanda Waller. They have footage of Batman in action which they watch. There is a bit of dialogue where they say Batman is the key to tracking down all 'the supers.' Very cool stuff."

None of this has been confirmed, but I'm pretty confident that the information you see here is true because El Mayimbe has a pretty solid track record for getting stuff like this right. Of course, anything could change in the development process of the film between now and when they start shooting.

I do like how they also acknowledge that Batman is the key to finding the other superheroes, and how that is obviously going to lead into Justice League. I really hope Warner Bros. finally cracked the code on building their DC cinematic universe.

Alexandre Desplat Scoring STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE

I just rewatched the original Star Wars trilogy, and one thing that particularly struck me this time around is just how huge of an impact John Williams' score has on the overall feeling of the movies. His work is a masterclass of iconic themes, and I'm thrilled that the composer is returning to that universe once again in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And though Williams' music goes hand in hand with Star Wars, it looks like he's only going to be contributing to the numbered saga (Episode VII, etc.) because a different composer is set to work on the first standalone film, recently titled Star Wars: Rogue One.

The Playlist points us to a report from Film Music Reporter, who noticed that Desplat appeared on a French radio program called Radio Classique’s Culture Club and revealed that he'll be providing the score for the movie, which will reunite him with Godzilla director Gareth Edwards. No other details have been announced yet, but Desplat is obviously a tremendously talented guy (he won an Oscar for his work on The Grand Budapest Hotel, beating himself since he was also nominated for The Imitation Game) and I'm interested to hear his contributions to the Star Wars universe.

I'm a little surprised that Michael Giacchino wasn't tapped for this job, since he's the heir apparent to Williams and there were rumors that he'd be reuniting with his Star Trek director J.J. Abrams to score The Force Awakens, but we're about to see a deluge of Star Wars films over the next decade and beyond, so I'm sure he'll have his opportunity if he wants it. Star Wars: Rogue One hits theaters on December 16th, 2016, and you can watch a video about what the storyline might be right here.

Unbelievably Accurate Paper Model of the Millennium Falcon

0
0

Star Wars fans never cease to amaze me with their level of devotion to creating (or recreating) cosplay, models, games, toys, and thousands of other things to look exactly like how George Lucas and his prop team envisioned them back in 1977. Today we have a brand new example of this kind of fanatic devotion to detail with a Millennium Falcon made almost entirely out of paper - almost, but not quite. It's 99% composed of paper, but the other 1% consists of LED lights and fiber optics on the interior. It's a breathtaking achievement by Polish artist Bernard Szukiel, who said it took him four years to complete using photos he found online.

The LEDs and fiber optics are insanely impressive by themselves, not even taking into account how spot-on accurate the exterior of the Falcon is. Everything, down to scratches on the paint, is lovingly recreated here, and it boggles the mind how much time went into this. It looks incredible, though, so I suppose it was all worth it. Check out some photos below.

Ultron Turns His Back on Humanity in His AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Character Poster

0
0

Hot on the heels of last week's debut of the character posters for Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, Marvel has unveiled the poster for the title villain himself. Maybe Tony Stark uploaded the past few years of movie marketing techniques into Ultron's database, because the villain is standing with his back to the "camera," peering over his shoulder at us like so many other posters have done in recent years.

Maybe it's just me, but if you look closely, it looks like Ultron is actually showing a little bit of sadness on his face. It's sort of Groot-esque, actually, with the big eyes and the stoic mouth. It's almost as if Ultron feels a pang of regret for wanting to destroy the world. We'll find out just how much emotion James Spader will bring to the character when Avengers: Age of Ultron opens on May 1st. Check out all of the recent character posters and everything else we know about the film here.

Haunting and Atmospheric Short Film - LINE SIGNAL

haunting-and-atmospheric-short-film-line-signal

Line Signal is an amazing and haunting short film about a woman who regularly goes for a run in the woods as strange and bizarre things starting to happen to her. She is seemingly being preyed upon by a misty fog, and along the way she comes across some unusual items. As this is all happening, some personal aspects of her life are coming together, and her communication with the outside world through her cell phone is being cut off.

The short was directed by John Panton, and I especially loved the atmospheric vibe of this short, as it gives off an eerie and unsettling feeling. This is a short not to be missed. I'll be looking forward to seeing what the director does next.

Scientifically Accurate PINKY AND THE BRAIN Animated Video

I don't know about you, but I loved watching Pinky and the Brain when I was a kid. I thought it was hilarious, and I remember there being a few episodes with cool homages to film genres, like one episode that begins with Brain narrating the episode face down in a pool that was a nod to Sunset Boulevard. I hadn't seen the movie at that age, but I knew the episode was referencing something, and it made me interested to eventually find out what it was.

Now the gang at Fox's ADHD is back again with another entry into their "scientifically accurate" series, and this time they're taking a rather depressing look at the reality of Pinky and the Brain:

Pinky and the Brain was a show about lab rats who were genetically modified and experimented on. Let that sink in.

Take a look below, but be warned: this isn't the show you remember from childhood.

Jack Huston Confirmed as Lead in THE CROW

jack-huston-confirmed-as-lead-in-the-crow

A couple of weeks ago, we learned that Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire) was in talks to join the new feature film adaptation of The Crow. A lot of fans are still unhappy with the fact that this movie is still being made, which I think is interesting. Especially since the creator of the comic, James O'Barr is directly involved with bringing the film to life, and that the film will be a direct adaptation of the original comic. You'd think fans might be happy about that, but apparently not. I like those aspects about the new film!

This last weekend, O'Barr attended the Lexington Comic and Toy Convention, and while he was there he confirmed that Huston has been cast in the lead role. This is the report from Dread Central:

"O'Barr said that 'Jack Huston has definitely been cast,' that he was 'really happy with that choice,' and that the film 'will shoot in a couple of months.' He also said the film will essentially be a straight adaptation of his original graphic novel, which differs quite a bit from the (still awesome) 1994 Brandon Lee vehicle."

I loved Alex Proyas' film, but I'm also excited about this new adaptation from director Corin Hardy (The Hallow). I think Huston is a great choice to take on the role, and he's a very talented actor that will kill it. I'm extremely curious to see how this turns out, and I'm hoping for the best. What do you think of Huston taking on the role?

Harvey Birdman Cosplayer Becomes BIRDMAN in New Parody

I never watched Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law, but I definitely watched the Birdman cartoon series from the 1960s. Both make an appearance in this new video from YouTuber OnlyLeigh, who has created an animated parody video of a Harvey Birdman cosplayer who has an inner monologue similar to Michael Keaton's character in the Oscar-winning film Birdman. It's a really obvious concept, but I actually haven't seen it done yet, so they get points for being first out of the gate with it.

Emma Thompson & Kevin Kline Join BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, Which Sets 2017 Release Date

0
0

Disney's live-action Beauty and the Beast is shaping up to have one of the best casts of all of the live-action reimaginings of fairy tale classics. We already know that Emma Watson will play Belle, Dan Stevens (The Guest) is playing The Beast/The Prince, Luke Evans is playing Gaston, and Josh Gad is playing Gaston's idiotic sidekick Le Fou. But the studio has just sent out a press release that confirms two more actors have been added to the cast, and the movie now has a release date penciled onto the calendar.

Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks) will play Mrs. Potts, while Kevin Kline (Wild Wild West) will play Belle's father, Maurice. Thompson is brilliant casting, and I think Kline will do a fine job as Belle's bumbling inventor father. The film will arrive in theaters on March 17th, 2017, which just over two years from now. That's a little farther away than I thought, but the announcement says that the "beloved tale will be retold for the big screen with a modern live-action lens and the help of transformative CG magic," so I suppose it'll take them a while to perfect the CG.

Also of note (pun intended): Alan Menken, who won two Oscars for his work on the 1991 animated version of the story, will score the movie, "which will feature new recordings of the original songs in addition to several new songs written by Menken and Sir Tim Rice." That's very cool news for Disney musical enthusiasts, since Menken and Rice are jointly responsible for classics like Aladdin and The Lion King.

Are you looking forward to seeing this new incarnation of Beauty and the Beast? I really hope Kevin Kline uses this video as inspiration for his character:
