Legendary Pictures has locked down a few members of their main cast for the upcoming fantasy film The Great Wall. So far Matt Damon, Pedro Pascal, and Willem Dafoe are confirmed to star in the film. It was previously reported that they were in talks.

The project is going to be the largest film ever to shoot entirely in China for global distribution, and there is also a sizable Chinese cast that includes Andy Lau, Jing Tian, Zhang Hanyu, Eddie Peng, Lu Han, Lin Gengxin, Zheng Kai, Chen Xuedong, Huang Xuan, Wang Junkai, Yu Xintian, and Liu Qiong.

The story seems like it’s going to make for a spectacular film. It’s set in 15th century China and follows an elite force of British soldiers who come across the massive wall being hastily built. As night falls the soldiers realize that the wall isn’t just being built to keep the Mongols out, but there’s also something more sinister at play. It is there that these warriors will make a last stand for humanity against an army of mythical creatures on the world’s most iconic structure.

The Great Wall is being directed by Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers), and the idea of the story came from Legendary CEO Thomas Tull and author Max Brooks (World War Z).

The film is scheduled to start shooting in China at the end of the month. I’m really looking forward to seeing how this comes together for the big screen.

BATTLEFIELD HARDLINE Launch Trailer

battlefield-hardline-launch-trailer

EA and Visceral Games have released the launch trailer for their upcoming game Battlefield Hardline, which looks extremely cool. I’m a fan of the Battlefield game franchise, and I like how this new game is different from the others that have been released. Unlike the other games in the series, this one breaks away from the traditional warfare mode and focuses on crime/heist elements involving the police Special Response Units as they engage in the war on crime and take down criminals in Los Angeles.

Lead your crew as detective Nick Mendoza in an episodic crime drama single player Campaign or as cops and criminals in intense high-speed Battlefield multiplayer. You’re on one side of the law or the other – time to hit the streets. Take control using new tactics to gather intel, obtain warrants and takedown with non-lethal force to make his arrests. Secure the cash in a thrilling new battlefield playground.
New maps and gadgets change the way you play. Use grappling hooks and ziplines to scale city buildings and zip across the city with the cash. No matter the strategy, teamwork will be essential to running the turf war. Fulfill your need for speed in thrilling new action packed modes that make for intense and fluid gameplay. Hop in new powerful muscle cars, sleek bikes or even give your whole crew a lift in transport or armored trucks.

Battlefield Hardline will be available on March 17th on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360.

Marshmallow Peeps Flavored Milk Now Exists

Easter is coming, and you know what that means... Peeps are in season! I love peeps, they are deliciously addictive, and I can’t have just one… box. Prairie Farms has just taken Peeps to a whole new level. They’ve announced that they will be releasing Peeps flavored milk! This has got to be the biggest thing since Chocolate milk was invented.

The milks will come in three flavors: Easter egg nog, chocolate marshmallow, and regular marshmallow. Now, as much as I love Peeps, it’s really hard for me to imagine them in milk form. I’ll try it because I’ll try anything once. The question is… will it make me sick? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Will any of you be stocking up on Peeps milk for the spring?

Joel Kinnaman Confirms He’ll Be in SUICIDE SQUAD

Last month we learned that Joel Kinnaman (RoboCop) was in negotiations to replace Tom Hardy as Rick Flagg in David Ayer’s DC Comics film Suicide Squad. Kinnaman has confirmed that he will, in fact, be in the movie. During an interview with AlloCine, the actor was asked about his involvement with the film, and this was his reply:

"All I can say is that I will be in the movie, and it's going to be amazing."

Kinnaman is a talented actor, and I think he’ll do a fine job in the role. He will join Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Jared Leto as the Joker, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and Jesse Eisenberg, who is rumored to be reprising his Batman v Superman role of Lex Luthor.

Kinnaman is not as big of a star as Hardy is, but I’m sure he’ll fit right in with the cast and deliver a solid performance. Everyone's eyes are on how the Joker will be portrayed in the film, though. To read some recently released information on Leto’s version of the Joker, click here.

Well, that last episode of The Walking Dead sure got a little awkward, didn’t it? That must have been one of the strangest and most uncomfortable dinner parties ever. I have no idea where the final half of this season is going, but it's definitely leading to something unsettling. In the meantime, it’s good to see Rick, Daryl, and some of the others settling in... in their own way. We also got to see how terrifying Carol can be when offering cookies to children.

We’ve got a promo spot and a clip from the next episode, “Spend,” for you to watch. But first, here’s the brief summary:

While trying to secure a new home, Rick and his group face challenges, and question the utopia they find themselves in.

Watch Mojo has released a great video that offers up what they feel are the top 10 fictional universes in film franchises. I love it when movies come along that completely engulf me in the worlds created for the stories they tell. Sci-fi and fantasy stories are the kinds of films that introduce us to the most unique universes. Two of my all-time favorites are Middle Earth and the Star Wars galaxy. What are yours!?

Sigourney Weaver on the Possibility of Returning for GHOSTBUSTERS Reboot

Sigourney Weever has been talking a lot about Chappie and Neill Blomkamp’s Alien movie recently, but what about that Ghostbusters reboot that is being directed by Paul Feige? She was asked if she would be included in the movie during a recent interview with Screen Rant, and this is what she said:

“They might have us pop up as marshmallow men or something and then destroy us. I don’t know. I hope they will think of some silly way for us to be in it. Maybe I could play that ancient librarian who goes [makes noise].”

I assume that when she uses the word “us,” she is referring to the rest of the Ghostbusters team. As of right now, there are no plans for her to be in the movie or anyone else for that matter, and I seriously doubt that they will be included. But who knows, maybe they will pop up in one of the four other films currently being planned. Sony Pictures to going to be developing a whole Ghostbusters universe. As cool as this sounds, I'm not going to get excited about it yet. It could end up being a disaster.

If anyone does deserve to make an appearance in the upcoming all-female Ghostbusters movie though, it’s Weaver.

Lucius Fox Is Coming to GOTHAM

Homeland and The Newsroom actor Chris Chalk has joined the cast of Gotham, and will be taking on the role of Lucius Fox. The character was played by Morgan Freeman in the Christopher Nolan directed Dark Knight trilogy.

The character was created by Len Wien and John Calnan back in 1979, and as you may know, he becomes the CEO of Wayne Enterprises while Bruce Wayne is protecting Gotham City as Batman. Fox also helps Wayne by developing lots of wonderful crimefighting toys.

According to Deadline, Chalk will appear as Fox in Episode 21 of this first season, and he has an option to return for season 2. Fox is a big part of Wayne’s life, so I like that they are going to incorporate the character into the series.

Tony Jaa and Dolph Lungren play two detectives who team up to take down a villainous gangster named Viktor Dragovic (Ron Perlman) in an action thriller called Skin Trade. Today we have wickedly cool trailer for the film. It looks like a pretty awesome action flick when brute strength meets furious Thai fighting. I enjoy watching films like this.

New Jersey detective, Nick Cassidy (Lundgren) heads to Bangkok where he teams up with Thai detective, Tony Vitayakui (Jaa) to hunt down Viktor Dragovic (Perlman) and destroy his human trafficking network. Nick had mistakenly killed Dragovic's son in a sting operation on the New Jersey docks, and Dragovic responded by attempting to kill Nick and his family. Nick miraculously survived the brutal attack, but his wife and daughter were killed. With nothing but vengeance to live for, Nick and Tony traverse their way through the Bangkok underworld in search of the elusive Dragovic. Meanwhile, FBI Agent Eddie Reed (Michael Jai White) is sent in to bring Nick home. But as the crossfire ensues, Nick has to determine who his true allies are.

The movie will be released on iTunes and VOD April 18th, and in select theaters on May 8th.

Steve Martin Joins Ang Lee’s BILLY LYNN’S LONG HALFTIME WALK

Legendary comedian Steve Martin has been cast alongside newcomer Joe Alwyn in director Ang Lee’s next film, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk. There's also a chance that Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy) could also join the movie.

Martin has been one of my favorite actors since I was kid. I love his films and his style of comedy. You just don’t see that kind of comedy these days. I guess he was the only guy who could pull it off. It always nice to see him get movie work.

This film is based on the novel by Ben Fountain, which “follows 19-year-old Texas-born infantryman Billy Lynn (Alwyn) and his fellow U.S. servicemen who survive a firefight in Iraq in 2005. The Bush administration brings the veterans home for a victory lap that leads them to the Dallas Cowboys’ football stadium where they’re honored during the team’s Thanksgiving halftime show before they return to war in Iraq.”

There’s no information on who Martin will be playing in the film, but the report suggests that he has likely been cast as Albert, “a Hollywood wheeler-dealer who tries to set up a movie based on Billy Lynn’s experiences with the rest of Bravo company.” As for Hedlund, if he is cast, he will play the protagonist’s “moody, hard-as-nails drill sergeant.”

Photo of Matthew McConaughey in Civil War Drama THE FREE STATE OF JONES

This is our first official look at Matthew McConaughey in the Gary Ross directed Civil War film, The Free State of Jones. The actor play Newton Knight in the story, who leads the community of Jones County, Mississippi in a bid to secede from the Confederacy. The film also stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Keri Russell, and Mahershala Ali

I’m a huge history buff, and the Civil War is one of those historical events that I have enjoyed researching. This is an intriguing story, and it has the makings of a seriously great movie. Depending on how version of Knight’s history you read he is either seen as a hero or an outlaw. I think he’s a little bit of both. it will be interesting to see how they exactly depict him in the film.

Set during the Civil War, The Free State of Jones tells the story of defiant Southern farmer, Newt Knight, and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy. Banding together with other small farmers and with the assistance of local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones. His marriage to a former slave, Rachel, and his subsequent establishment of a mixed race community was unique in the post-war South. Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction, distinguishing him as a compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance long beyond the War.

The Free State of Jones is currently shooting in New Orleans, and will be released on March 11th, 2016.

Trippy, Fun Animated Short Film - LOST CUBERT

"Lost Cubert" is a fascinating animated short film that has a really strange and fun vibe to it. The short has a slick 2D and 3D animation mixture, and the way that it all flows together and moves is really cool. Here's a story summary:

Cubert’s life is determined by work. Endless repetitions of the same tasks, dull routines, a perfect construction of monotony. Suddenly he is wrenched out of his daily grind and is confronted with a seemingly inescapable system. His quest for an exit leads him deep into a labyrinth of monotony – and to the bounds of his sanity.

I think the people who end up watching this are really going to enjoy it, so make sure to take the time to check it out when you can.

Trailer for THE RUSSIAN WOODPECKER - Secrets of Chernobyl Revealed

I’ve got a trailer for you to watch for a fascinating documentary called The Russian Woodpecker. It revolves around the 1986 nuclear meltdown at Chernobyl in Ukraine, and how the reasoning behind it might be much more sinister than we thought.

The title of the film is named after the Duga, which is a gigantic radio-transmitter wall that produces a pecking sound. The piece of technology is one of several objects that Ukranian artist named Fedor Alexandrovich is obsessed. He believes that it is the cause and effect of the Chernobyl disaster.

Here’s a synopsis for the film to give you a better idea of what it’s about:

Young, eccentric Ukrainian artist Fedor Alexandrovich was just four years old when the Chernobyl disaster struck, but the event had a profound effect on him. In seeking to learn more about what happened at the nuclear plant, Fedor becomes fascinated with the Duga—a massive, Soviet-constructed radio antenna near the Chernobyl site that remains shrouded in mystery.
Fedor discovers the Duga was one of the USSR’s secret Cold War weapons built to penetrate Western communications systems and, possibly, minds. He arrives at a terrifying conclusion that not only explains the radio antenna’s role in the disaster but also lays bare the cruelty inflicted on Ukraine by its Russian neighbors. Fedor must decide if he will protect his family and himself, or tell the world what he believes. In the package of a paranoid thriller, The Russian Woodpecker takes us to the frontlines of the Revolution, and gives us the history and context for the war between Russia and the Ukraine, a battle that will have ramifications for the whole world.

David Hasselhoff Joins SHARKNADO 3

The SyFy Channel has announced that Baywatch star David Hasselhoff has joined the cast in Sharknado 3. He’s the perfect addition to this ridiculous franchise, and he’ll play a character named Gilbert Sheperd, who is the father of Ian Ziering’s character, Fin.

I know that there’s a decent-sized fan base for these low-budget movies, but I just have a hard time watching them. How is it possible that a stupid idea just gets dumber and dumber? Speaking of which, maybe they should get Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels to reprise their roles as Harry and Lloyd in one of these absurd productions. It seems like it would make complete sense in a franchise that makes absolutely no sense.

The Hoff also joins Tara Reid as April; Cassie Scerbo as Nova; Bo Derek as April’s mother, May; Ryan Newman as April and Fin’s daughter Claudia; and Jack Griffo as Claudia’s friend, Billy.

Other notable cameos will include Mark Cuban as the President of the United States; Ann Coulter as the Vice President; Jerry Springer as Mr. White, a manic tourist; *NSYNC singer Chris Kirkpatrick as a pool lifeguard, and WWE star Chris Jericho, who will portray Bruce, the roller coaster ride operator.

When a mass of sharknadoes threatens Florida, chainsaw-wielding hero Fin (Ziering) must again risk his life to save his children on spring break. But as he fights his way south, the sharknadoes merge and grow bigger than ever before.
Sharknado 3 premieres on Syfy in July.

Simon West's THE BLOB Remake Will be More Like ALIEN and PREDATOR

$

0

Last month we reported that action movie director Simon West (Con Air) would be remaking the classic sci-fi horror film The Blob. This is a very recognizable horror film franchise, and I believe this remake has the potential to be the biggest and most successful version of it.

Thanks to the director of the film, we have some new details on his vision for The Blob. In an interview with Den of Geek he compares the Blob itself to the extraterrestrial villains of the Alien and Predator franchises. He explains:

"Yeah, it’s definitely going to be on a much bigger canvas than the originals, which were much more small, niche genre horror movies. My version of The Blob’s going to be more sci-fi.
"The blob itself will be more sophisticated, more along the lines of Alien and Predator and things like that – much more science-based, the way Jurassic Park made you believe you could bring back dinosaurs with a bit of DNA from a mosquito. This will be much more explained on where the blob comes from and how it works. It’ll be a much more sophisticated creature – because it is a monster movie rather than a horror in that sense."

It should be interesting to see where the Blob came from, and to get an explanation on how it works. West goes on to say this will also be an invasion movie, and explains where it is in the development process:

"This thing's come from another planet, and also, we don't know how many there are. It's fun at the moment - while I'm prepping this other film, The Blob is a bit longer term. I'm having a lot of designing this creature, what its talents are, its attributes, how you can think you've defeated it, but you haven't. It's fun inventing a creature like that - like the new Alien or the new Predator."

I really like the original film 1958 film, and I recently re-watched the 1988 version that was co-written by Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Walking Dead). I didn't really like that movie when I saw it back in the day, but I surprisingly really enjoyed it this last time I watched it. Mind you, I haven't seen it since it was first released in theaters.

The Blob is a cult classic alien monster, and I hope West can bring it to life in a fun an terrifying way. What do you think about what his plans are from bringing it to life?

Universal Pictures has released a Korean trailer for Furious 7, and it features even more new footage from the highly anticipated film. The trailer is introduced by Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez, and I think it gives us our best look yet at the story for the movie. It really highlights Jason Statham’s character, and how much of a problem he’s actually going to be for these guys. They have no other option than to try and take him out.

The film was screened at SXSW this weekend, and the buzz seems overwhelmingly positive. It sounds to me like the film is going to live up to expectations. It hits theaters on April 3rd.
