Chris Hemsworth hosted Saturday Night Live this weekend, and he was part of a great sketch in which he reprised his role as the heroic Thor. The sketch is set after the Avengers defeat Ultron, and the team celebrates their victory on the news.

We’ve never seen this wild side of Thor before, and as you'll see, he’s definitely the life of the party. The sketch features Taran Killam as Iron Man, Pete Davidson as Bruce Banner, Jay Pharoah as Nick Fury, and Beck Bennett as Captain America.

Oh yeah, and Hemsworth also recently joined Twitter! So if you want follow him, click here.

New STAR WARS: BATTLEFRONT Footage Got Standing Ovation at GDC

new-star-wars-battlefront-footage-gets-standing-ovation-at-gdc

The hype is really building for DICE’s upcoming Star Wars: Battlefront video game, and I'm incredibly excited to see some more footage from it. That day may come soon. The game developer recently showed off a new trailer for the game that contained a lot more footage at a behind-closed-doors event at GDC (Game Developers Conference), and apparently people who were in attendance were jumping out of their seats with excitement and gave it a standing ovation.

EA COO Peter Moore talked about the positive feedback from the event on Twitter saying:

“A GREAT show with my friends/partners @GameStop. Superb ovation for latest gameplay footage on @starwars Battlefront.”

There’s no word on when the rest of us will get to see this footage for ourselves, but I would assume that it will be released sometime in the near future. Then, of course, there’s always the chance it will leak early, but I haven’t seen anything yet.

I can’t wait to see for myself more of what Star Wars: Battlefront will entail, but it sure sounds like it’s going to be worth the wait. Last month some documents leaked that suggested EA is planning to launch Battlefront with an aggressive focus on DLC and that the game would also tie in with the upcoming film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. You can read more about that stuff here. I’m sure a lot more is going to be revealed at E3 in a few months.

Here's the first teaser for the game, released last year.

James Gunn Says Marvel Studios Won't Attend Comic-Con This Year

james-gunn-says-marvel-studios-wont-attend-comic-con-this-year

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn revealed some interesting news over the weekend during a Q&A session that he held on his Facebook page. At one point he was asked if he would be attending San Diego Comic-Con this year, and he had some disappointing news for fans when he replied with the following:

"I'm not sure. Marvel isn't going so I'm not sure I will either."

Marvel has been one of the most popular panels at Comic-Con since Jon Favreau got up on stage and showed off Iron Man. They are one of the things that makes Comic-Con Comic-Con, so the fact that Marvel isn't planning on being there is kind of heartbreaking.

Now, in case you think Gunn could be lying, a fan asked that on Twitter, and the director replied with the following:

"I have never lied about anything to the fans, ever."

I hope that something changes between now and Comic-Con, or I fear that the days of Marvel studios at Comic-Con might have come to an end. Now that they are with Disney, the studio is able to hold events at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood as well as the D23 Expo in Anaheim. The thing is, that's not where the roots of Marvel Studios lie. Their roots are grounded at San Diego Comic-Con. That where fans from all over the world come to take in all things geek, and I hate thinking that Marvel won't be there to help fuel that geekdom.

I really hope 2014 wasn't the last year that we see Marvel at Comic-Con, because that would be a bloody shame. It's just that one epic event of the year where Marvel is able to connect with thousands of their fans in person. Taking that away from the fans doesn't really make sense, so I'm a little confused by why they won't be there. Especially with Doctor Strange and Captain America: Civil War coming out, as well as the introducion of Spider-Man into their universe. It could be a huge year!

Ten Worst Practical Special Effects in Movies - Video

A lot of fans like myself praise the use of practical effects in movies - especially in the films being made today, because it's kind of rare to see them now with all of the CG effects being used. But just because filmmakers use practical effects doesn't make things better. There have been a lot of effects used over the years that have looked absolutely terrible. Thanks to the guys over at Watch Mojo, we have a video that lists what they think are the ten of the worst practical effects that we've seen in movies. Even though some of the films listed are classics, it's kind of hard to argue with their choices.

Neill Blomkamp Has An Idea For DISTRICT 10 But It Will Have to Wait

The best feature film that Neill Blomkamp has made so far was District 9. Since then he has made Elysium and Chappie, but those last two films have not gone over well with audiences or critics. I actually enjoyed both movies regardless of what other people think, but I can see why people aren't liking them. The next film that he will be taking on is the next chapter in the Alien franchise, but I think people are a little worried about that now.

Regardless of all that, fans of District 9 have been wondering what is going on with the sequel District 10. We now have an update on that from the director in a recent interview with IGN in which he reveals that that he has an idea for the film, but it may be a while before we actually see it get made.

"I have an idea for District 10, which is really cool. The problem is I feel like Chappie is the end of three films that have a similar stylistic approach to them. Chappie is the odd one out in that is has no socio-political underpinnings. It doesn't have my experiences as a kid in South Africa incorporated into it. And Elysium– although it doesn't have my experiences as a kid in South Africa, it has the same notion of oppressor in the elites, and the large population base beneath it. And Chappie doesn't, but they are still part of a trilogy. So moving forward I would love to realize this idea of District 10 – I have every intention to do it, I just need to find the right time to do it – to not go back to Johannesburg and shoot something similar, yet."

Sounds like he wants to take a break from shooting in South Africa for a while, but it's good to know that he has an idea that he's excited about, and that he will eventually get to make it. One of the last things that we heard was that he had a 18-page story treatment done for District 10, but he has yet to offer any details on the story.

YouTuber JohnnyB2K has taken all of the trailers that Marvel has released for Avengers: Age of Ultron and cut them together in chronological order to make a super trailer that is over five minutes long. As you'll see, it turned out pretty awesome!

The movie is less than two months away from being released, and I couldn't be more pumped up about watching it! This video helps give us an idea of the epic scope of the story that Joss Whedon wants to tell, but there's obviously still so much that we just don't know.

Jeremy Renner & Amy Adams Will Star in Sci-Fi Film STORY OF YOUR LIFE

A small American Hustle reunion is in the works.

THR reports that Jeremy Renner and Amy Adams, two of the stars of David O. Russell's con film, are working together again as leads in a new sci-fi film called Story of Your Life. The film is based on a short story by Ted Chiang, which follows a linguistics expert (Adams) recruited by the military when alien spacecraft land all around the Earth. She's meant to figure out if the alien beings come in peace, or have more sinister plans. As she begins to communicate with them, she starts to experience flashbacks that reveal the truth about their visit.

According to the trade, Renner will play a physics professor that the government pairs with the linguist to help speak with the aliens. Prisoners and Enemy director Denis Villeneuve is directing the film for Paramount, and the script comes from Eric Heisserer, who wrote the remakes of A Nightmare on Elm Street and The Thing.

Renner will film Captain America: Civil War this spring and then jump over to begin work on Story of Your Life, which starts filming in June. Villeneuve recently scored the directing gig for Blade Runner 2, which has Harrison Ford returning to reprise his role as Rick Deckard.

I'm a big fan of Adams and Villeneuve, and I like Renner well enough, so I'd love to be thrilled about this movie. I haven't been the biggest fan of the scripts Heisserer has delivered so far, though, so I'm hoping he'll be able to turn in something awesome this time and that everything else falls into place from there. The concept definitely sounds cool, so this could be a great movie if the script is up to snuff.

Director David Mead sent us this fun horror short thriller he created called Turn Around When Possible. The film was influenced by classic 80s horror films such as Gremlins and Critters. It's a simple plot, but its effectively executed. Here's the synopsis:

Military sounds chatter and static. Crackling voices over the ether. On a wooded road two girls are driving, lost amongst the endless forest, the road finally runs out. Strange noises surround them, the ferns begin to move, something is closing in… They are not alone in these woods.

If you're a fan of horror, then this is a short worth checking out.

STAR WARS Is Introducing Its First LGBT Character into Canon

The Star Wars universe is full of all kinds of great characters with different backgrounds, and they come in all kinds of different shapes, sizes, and colors. Well, it is about to get even more diverse with the inclusion of a character named Moff Mors, who is the very first LGBT character to be introduced into the official canon.

The character will make her debut in the upcoming novel Star Wars: Lords of the Sith, which was written by Paul S. Kemp. The news was first reported by Big Shiny Robot, and they describe the character as follows:

"Moff Mors is an Imperial who has made some very serious mistakes but she is an incredibly capable leader and spends much of the book working hard to prevent absolute failure. She also happens to be a lesbian."

Del Rey Star Wars editor Shelly Shapiro had this to say about the character:

"It’s not something I really think about, it just makes sense. There’s a lot of diversity – there should be diversity in Star Wars. You have all these different species and it would be silly to not also recognize that there’s a lot of diversity in humans. If there’s any message at all, it’s simply that Star Wars is as diverse (or more so because they have alien species) as humanity is in real life and we don’t want to pretend it’s not. It just felt perfectly natural."

Shapiro also points out that Moff Mors is not the first LGBT character in Star Wars, but explains that “This is certainly the first character in canon." There was a gay Mandalorian couple who appeared in several of the Legacy of the Force novels (their names were Goran Bevlin and Madrit Vasur). There was also a lesbian character in the video game Knights of the Old Republic, and same-sex relationships are allowed in the MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic.

The new book hits shelves April 28th.

See THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK's Battle of Hoth in LEGO Form

I'm rewatching the original Star Wars trilogy to get pumped up for The Force Awakens, and I just finished my rewatch of The Empire Strikes Back last week, so the film's iconic Battle of Hoth is still very fresh in my mind. It's a breathtaking sequence that still looks fantastic today, and like most things related to Star Wars, it's become part of our pop culture in some pretty creative ways. Fans have put together things ranging from a Hoth-themed chess set to some stunning LEGO photography set on the icy planet and even a recreation in Minecraft, and now another LEGO take on the battle has been created.

LaughingSquid points out a new video from the official LEGO YouTube channel that features some of the same imagery as we know from The Empire Strikes Back, but while most fan-made recreations go out of their way to stay as close to the original source material as possible, this one takes some massive liberties with the story and really doesn't resemble the actual events from the movie at all. There are even battle droids from The Phantom Menace that show up for some reason. Take a look below and see for yourselves.

Wow! Last week when the new poster for Brad Bird's original sci-fi film Tomorrowland arrived, I was saying how we still didn't really know that much about the movie despite a few teasers and a Super Bowl spot being released. All of that changed with this morning's brand new trailer (released during a Facebook Q&A session with Bird and writer/producer Damon Lindelof), which shows us the full scope of what Bird has in store for us with this movie - and it looks stellar.

The visual effects look unbelievably good, and this trailer does a great job of giving us a sense of the danger and stakes of this story. I rarely watch trailers twice in a row, but this one is full of so much spectacular imagery that I couldn't help but take a second look. Take note of the design elements taken directly from Disney's Tomorrowland theme park, like the Space Mountain building at 1:11. Oh yeah, and be sure to take note of the giant robots punching each other! George Clooney and Britt Robertson both look excellent in this, and I can't wait to see the full film.

Watch the trailer below. The film debuts on May 22nd, 2015.

MIDNIGHT RIDER Director Becomes First Filmmaker To Go To Prison For Film-Related Death

$

27-year-old camera assistant Sarah Jones (above) died last year on the set of a movie called Midnight Rider when she was hit by a train as the production filmed on a bridge in Georgia that they didn't have permission to be on. Deadline reports that the film's director, Randall Miller (Houseguest, Bottle Shock), plead guilty to involuntary manslaughter charges and has been sentenced to two years in prison, 10 years probation, a $20,000 fine, and 360 hours of community service.

Accident-related deaths have happened in Hollywood before, but Miller will become the first filmmaker who actually goes to prison as a direct result of an on-set death. Jones' death was a tragedy that could have been avoided if the production had obtained the proper permission from train company CSX before filming on their property. There's no excuse for that kind of negligence, and a young girl's life has been cut short because of it. It's one thing to have a sense of guerrilla filmmaking, quickly shooting things in natural environments and sometimes operating without a permit. But it's something else entirely when you actively endanger the lives of your crew.

Miller's guilty plea was made partly in exchange for charges being dropped against his wife, producer Jody Savin. Miller's lawyers say they think he'll only serve one year of the two-year sentence, but as part of his punishment, he won't be able to serve as director, assistant director, or supervisor in charge of safety on any film production during his probation.

Mexican Wrestlers Body Slam Each Other Dressed as TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES

Here's something you don't see every day. While Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael are known for their high-flying martial arts, I don't think we've ever seen the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles enter a wrestling ring and throw down with each other. But thanks to two teams of Mexican wrestlers - the Tortuguillos Karatekas and Tortugas Ninjas - now we can imagine what that might look like. They donned TMNT costumes and jumped in the ring, spinning and flipping and body slamming each other all over the place. (I'm a big fan of the move that comes at the 1:12 mark. It's so ridiculous!)

Have Sony and Marvel Studios Found Their New Spider-Man?

$
0
0

(UPDATE: Nothing official has been announced yet, but the studio is reportedly searching for someone younger to play the role. Hit the very bottom of this post for details.)

There's a slight chance that Marvel and Sony have found the actor who will play Spider-Man in their upcoming films. The information I'm about to provide is speculative, but there are breadcrumbs that can be found that are compelling enough to follow.

As you know, there are a lot of young actors out there who are more than capable of taking on the role of Peter Parker and Spider-Man. In the past, both Logan Lerman and Dylan O'Brien were on a list of potential people who could play the web-slinger.

The eyes have now turned on a young actor from the UK by the name of Sam Strike. I have no idea who this kid is, but he is on the BBC series EastEnders, and if all this leads to him being Spider-Man, everyone will know who he is. It all started when the actor's manager posted the following tweet:

I know that just because he has been offered a lead role in a very big U.S. film doesn't mean that he's Spider-Man. But the evidence continues. A few months ago the actor posted a photo on his Instagram page of him wearing a Spider-Man mask with the caption, "I'm Spiderman."

I'm spiderman

A photo posted by Sam Strike (@samstrike1894) on

Of course he could very well just be messing around, but there's a good chance that he posted the photo around the time where he was about to audition for the superhero role. There have also been a couple other Tweets from the actor that are interesting to note. The first is this:

The guy is obviously excited for the role, and it requires him to get into shape. He also retweeted a post from Robert Downey Jr. the day before he hit the gym. Then around the time rumors started regarding Miles Morales being the next Spider-Man, the actor weighed in on his thoughts saying:

There's a lot of circumstantial evidence here, and it was enough to definitely make me think that it is possible that Strike could have been cast in the role, and that he is now preparing to appear in Captain America: Civil War. Of course, this could all be for another big role that he's landed.

What do you all think about this? Is this reaching too far? If he has been cast as Spider-Man, do you think he would make a solid choice? He can definitely pull off the look, but I'm not familiar with his acting ability. I'm curious to see if anything comes of this.

Masterful Fan-Created Modernized X-FILES Intro

The X-Files is one of those shows that I've seen a couple episodes of, but haven't had time to make my way through the whole series. I saw both of the movies in theaters, but ever since word came out earlier this year that Fox is considering bringing the show back for a limited series, I've been meaning to dig in and catch up with the show before new episodes are eventually released.

Filmmaker Denver Jackson sent us this awesome X-Files video that he made that's a shot-for-shot recreation of the original opening of the show, but updated for modern times. Everything from the True Detective-style visuals to the haunting cello version of the iconic theme song works so well in this context, and after seeing this, I wouldn't be surprised if Fox gave him a call to create the actual opening credits for the new episodes. Check it out below, with the original opening embedded at the bottom for comparison purposes. For Joey's list of the 12 funniest X-Files episodes, click here.
