DJANGO UNCHAINED - First Official Look at Tarantino's New Movie

$

0

Here's our first official look at Quentin Tarantino's new film Django Unchained, which he's described as being a spaghetti southern. The images give us a look at the film's two heroes Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz, and Leonardo DiCaprio as the evil villain plantation owner named Calvin Candie, "who likes to make his toughest slaves fight to the death in gladiatorial combat." Everyone looks great in their roles! DiCaprio looks like an evil son-of-a-bitch. Foxx had this to say  in a interview with EW,

There’s a beautiful way [Tarantino] found for the characters to talk to each other. It’s mindblowing. You’ve never heard it this way. You’ve seen movies deal with slavery — or westerns that never dealt with slavery – do it the safe way. This way is like … wow.

I have no doubt Tarantino is going to give us a film that is once again going to entertainingly shock us. I'm a fan of most of Tarantion's work, and this new film sounds like it's going to be something special. It's set to be released on December 25th of this year, and I can't wait!

Here's the full breakdown of the story:

Set in the South two years before the Civil War, "Django Unchained" stars Academy Award®-winner Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Academy Award®-winner Christoph Waltz). Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty. The unorthodox Schultz acquires Django with a promise to free him upon the capture of the Brittles – dead or alive.

Success leads Schultz to free Django, though the two men choose not to go their separate ways. Instead, Schultz seeks out the South’s most wanted criminals with Django by his side. Honing vital hunting skills, Django remains focused on one goal: finding and rescuing Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), the wife he lost to the slave trade long ago.

Django and Schultz’s search ultimately leads them to Calvin Candie (Academy Award®-nominee Leonardo DiCaprio), the proprietor of “Candyland,” an infamous plantation where slaves are groomed by trainer Ace Woody (Kurt Russell) to battle each other for sport. Exploring the compound under false pretenses, Django and Schultz arouse the suspicion of Stephen (Academy Award®-nominee Samuel L. Jackson), Candie's trusted house slave. Their moves are marked, and a treacherous organization closes in on them. If Django and Schultz are to escape with Broomhilda, they must choose between independence and solidarity, between sacrifice and survival...

Foxx also talked about a few of the characters saying,

Candie is a business man who owns a plantation called Candie Land, and that’s where my wife ends up being, we have to get in good with Candy, by me playing a valet for Christoph’s character.

Christoph’s character is a little aloof to what slavery actually is. He’s not familiar with everything, and when he sees atrocities, it’s Greek to him. But Django lets him know this is the way the world is and we got to get used to it. He teaches Django certain things he needs to become a whole man, and [Django] also teaches Christoph that when life deals you these cards, here’s what you’ve got to do.

All Django wants to do is get his wife. He’s not trying to cure or solve slavery. He just wants to get his life back.

The movie also stars Samuel L. Jackson, Sacha Baron Cohen, Gerald McRaney, Dennis Christopher, Kurt Russell, Laura Cayouette, M.C. Gainey, Don Johnson, Kerry Washington, Anthony LaPaglia, RZA, Tom Wopat, James Remar, James Russo, and Todd Allen.

James Bond SKYFALL Teaser Trailer Description

The first teaser trailer for the new James Bond Skyfall was shown at CinemaCon in Las Vegas yesterday during the Sony presentation. Thanks to Cinema Blend, we have a detailed description of the footage that was shown, along with some of the dialogue. From the description of this trailer, it sounds like director Sam Mendes might be bringing us one of the darkest and most action-packed 007 films yet. At least that's what I'm really hoping for. Here's the description:

The trailer begins with a shot of Bond (Daniel Craig) from behind looking at the city of London. Then we hear someone in a voice-over say the word “Country” and Bond saying, “England.” It seems he is playing some sort of word association game. We then hear the mystery voice say “Gun” and Bond replies “Shot” as we view a target at the end of a shooting range. We then see that 007 is in an interrogation room where he is being asked the questions and being watched by Ralph Fiennes and some other people through two-way mirrors. The man sitting in front of Bond says “Agent,” and the superspy replies “Provocateur.” As more images flash on the screen the word association game continues: “Murder” “Employment.” The music then drops out as we flash back to the interrogation room and the man running the test says. “Skyfall.” After a pause, Bond says, “Done,” and stands up from the table. Another huge montage begins and we see shots of helicopters, giant fireballs causing a mysterious silhouette, shots of the Shanghai nightlife, Bond is standing over a long row of coffins draped with the flag of England, and a subway car crashing through a tunnel wall with incredible force. As the trailer comes to an end we hear Bond say, “Someone is coming to kill us. We’re going to kill them first.”

From beginning to end the trailer was impressive and had a very slick look to it that we don’t typically see from Mendes’ movies. While it all came in flashes, the movie looks like it is very action packed and tense. As excited as I was for Skyfall going into the presentation, I’m even more excited now.

One day we'll all be able to see this trailer for ourselves. I imagine since it's already been cut and ready to go, Sony will release it online or in theaters soon. It sounds like this next Bond film is going to be well worth the wait. The movie will hit theaters on November 9th!

Great New Image of THE AVENGERS Assembled

Here's an awesome new image from The Avengers featuring the epic team assembled and ready for battle! We've seen this clip of the Avengers in several of the trailers, but this image is a little different as it has has a slightly different angle where the entire team is facing us.

On another note, I was listening to the local radio station this morning and they were talking about The Avengers when all of a sudden they busted out a big big spoiler right over the radio. I had no time to react to it; needless to say, I'm completely pissed off about it. I freakin' hate morning radio. What's even crazier is not a single one of them seemed to realize they were talking about a big spoiler. I won't say anything about it here because I don't want to ruin for you like it was ruined for me.

Girl From THE RING Throws Out Pitch In Japan!

So the character from The Ring, well wait I guess it's Japan, so Ringu, threw out a pitch at a recent game. Funny, but I think it would've been more hilarious if the camera would've framed her walking towards the tv screen. That would've messed some people's world up. In other news, the entire roster from both teams died seven days later.

Here's an awesome collection of badass character posters for The Expendables that has invaded the internet at various movie blogs. I enjoyed the first film; I thought it was entertainingly over the top. There was definitely some room for improvement, but I liked it for what it was. I'm looking forward to the sequel, but I do hope this one turns out to be better. The movie is scheduled for release on August 17th, 2012. You will find a full story description of the film below. The first image above of Sylvester Stallone comes from AICN.

Here's a spoiler-filled synopsis for the film:

Stallone, Statham, Rourke, Lundgren, Couture and Crews return as hard-edged but noble mercenaries in the second installment of Sylvester Stallone's old-school action thriller, The Expendables.

As payback for taking out the corrupt CIA agent Monroe (Eric Roberts) in the first Expendables, cagey Agent Church (Bruce Willis) forces the Expendables to do an "easy mission": retrieve a missing CIA package from Gazak, a civil war torn country in Easter Europe.

The easy mission turns deadly when the Expendables are ambushed by a team of ruthless rival mercs, the Sangunaires, competing to get the same package. Tool (Mickey Rourke), the heart and souleof the Expendables, is brutally murdered by Vilain, the leader of the bloodthirsty guns for hire. Still, the Expendables manage to pull of the mission and return with the CIA package, but it's a hollow victory.

As their thoughts turn from grief to revenge, Tool's beautiful young daughter Fiona shows up. Cut from the same stone as her dad, she wants to join the Expendables when they hunt down Villain and his men. Barney (Stallone) promises her the Expendables will avenge Tool's death, but will not risk putting his best friend's daughter in harm's way.

Fiona, who is young and wile, embarks on her own revenge mission, complicating matters for Barney when she is captured and ransomed by VIlain. Now Barney and the expendables must risk everything to save her, kidnapping CIA Agent Church and pulling off a daring heist of the CIA package they were hired to bring back.

When Agent Church reveals why the CIA package is so valuable to Vilain, the stakes go up even higher. Inside the package are canisters of radioactive cesium which Vilain has been tasked with releasing on the people's uprising that threatens the thirty year rule of Gazak's vicious dictator, President Dogot.

The Expendables, along with Agent Church, are now faced with an impossible mission: rescue Fiona, foil a dictator's vicious plot to kill scores of innocent people, and avenge the death of one of their own.

New Zealand Horror Film Short THE FRENCH DOORS

Here's a creepy short horror film from  New Zealand, called The French Doors. The short was directed by Steve Ayson, and the story is about a home renovator that installs some second-hand French doors in a back room of his house. He soon discovers that light isn't all they let in. I found this over on filmmaker Freddie Wong's YouTube feed. I thought it was entertaining... check it out!

Jude Law and Jim Sturgess Joining Angelina Jolie in MALEFICENT

According to a report from Life and Style magazine, Jude Law and Jim Sturgess could be cast alongside Angelina Jolie in the upcoming dark Disney tale, Maleficent. I'm treating this as a rumor for now, but the report says that Law has been offered the role of a character named Stefan, "who is half human, half fairy and the father of Aurora, a.k.a. Sleeping Beauty." Sturgess is interested in taking on the role of Diaval, "an Irish man with black hair, dark eyes and a slight Irish accent. When he's first seen in the movie, he's not a human, but a bird. Angie's character, Maleficent, turns him into a man. Then, says a source who's read the script, they become lovers."

Both these actors would make a great addition to the film... if the source of this information is right. They also say that Patrick Stewart may be up for the role of King Henry, and that Judi Dench and Emma Thompson have been approached to play Flittle. It was previously reported that Elle Fanning has been in talks to take on the role of Aurora, but there's been no confirmation of that.

The film is a retelling of the classic Sleeping Beauty story, only this time it's being told from the perspective of the evil sorceress Maleficent. Jolie talked about the film in a interview saying,

It's a really great script. I'm having a lot of fun. I've already got my horns fitted. My kids are very happy.... It sounds really crazy to say that there will be something that's good for young girls in this because it sounds like you're saying they should be a villain. [Maleficent] is actually a great person. But she's not perfect. She's far from perfect.

The film is being directed by visual effects artist Robert Stromberg. Stromberg has worked on films such as Shutter Island, The Road, Tropic Thunder, There Will Be Blood, Pan's Labyrinth, Avatar, Alice in Wonderland, and a ton of other movies. I'm excited to see what he comes up visually for this movie.

What do you think about this film and the actors that are rumored to be up for roles in it?

AVENGERS Movie Outs Little Known Fact About Hulk: Will There Be Fallout?

$
0
0

It could be my recent semester spent in philosophy in religion beefing this up a bit, but I can't help but think this line will cause a slight hub-bub in more ways than one when The Avengers premieres stateside May 4th. The line can be found below, which was found on Rotten Tomatoes.

Granted I don't know the context of the situation or the way in which it was spoken (maybe a UK reader can fill us in), but I do know a fair bit about Marvel history and would go out on a limb to say that this line is no accident. In "Incredible Hulk #662" (released February of last year, special thanks to Rich Lane) last year, the above panel ran in Marvel comics, revealing Hulk to be an atheist in the monotheistic sense. This is specifically noted by Hera (red haired Greek goddess reading his mind) specifying the singular, and of course the capital "G" in the place of the lower case "g." Notice in the dialogue taken from the movie above, you see the exact same emphasis placed in the line.

So what's the point? We've had atheist/agnostic/religious characters before right? I think the game changer this time around will be audience. With The Avengers being marketed just as heavily to children as adults, and with the mass exposure it is receiving from the media, I wouldn't be surprised if some backlash were to result from this line in the movie, and not just from the religious side. Who's to say an atheist might not be so keen on being categorized as angry?

It could become a big deal or it could not, but since this is Geektyrant and we thrive on Geek discussion, what do you think? Was the line intentional? Was someone making a statement? Do you think there will be a backlash? Please refrain from hate speech and bashing and keep things as civil as possible. While we may differ in religious views, we all are united by our geekdom.

James Bond 24 Coming in 2014

I've got some great news for all you James Bond fans! We will thankfully not have to wait as long to see the 24th James Bond film as we did for Skyfall. MGM's President of Worldwide Distribution, Rory Bruer, showed up at CinemaCon yesterday and promised that we'd see Bond 24 up on the big screen in 2014. I have no doubt Daniel Craig will be back on board to play Agent 007.

The first teaser trailer for the film was also shown at the convention yesterday and you can read the description of it right here. No word on when the teaser will be released to the rest of us, but I imagine it will hit soon. Even though we still have very little info on the story for Skyfall, where would you like to see the adventures of Bond go in Bond 24?

Funny Opening Sequence of Sacha Baron Cohen’s THE DICTATOR

Check out this Hilarious opening sequence of Sacha Baron Cohen’s new film The Dictator. The trailers I've seen for the movie look funny, but this is the first thing I've watched that actually made me laugh out loud. There's one great clip in particular of a guy who's getting some news from a doctor, only it's unclear to him if he's getting good news or bad news.

Here's a short synopsis:

Baron Cohen plays a ruthless dictator who heads to the U.S. for a meeting at the United Nations and finds that his number two has replaced him with an unsuspecting sheepherder lookalike. As the dictator wanders the city, he meets the owner of an organic food store.

The film was directed by Larry Charles (Borat, BrunoCurb Your Enthusiasm) and also stars Ben Kingsley, Jason Mantzoukas, Anna Faris, Megan Fox, John C. Reilly, and J.B. Smoove. It comes out on May 11th, 2012. Check out the clip, and let me know if it made you laugh as well.

Supercut of Movie Characters Looking at You

This is a fun video montage featuring movie characters at moments in the film when they are looking at the audience. The video was edited together by Brutzelpretzel to the song "Can't Take My Eyes Off You." Here's a note from the creator:

This is a tribute to the wink of complicity from the filmmakers to the audience when they make actors look straight into the camera. It is not a tribute to scenes where the fourth wall is broken (when a character adresses the audience directly), some clips in the video belong to that category but most of them don't cause it is not what we wanted to show.

There are 148 different clips in this video, but at first we had selected more than 200 films. We left out dozens of scenes in purpose, cause we didn't want a 15 minutes montage. For example, we decided not to include the "found footage" genre, cause almost everyone looks at the camera in this type of movies (like Cloverfield). And also musical numbers, where it's very common that the actors look at the camera while singing. And, obviously, there are many more films missing cause we didn't know them. Apologies in advance for every film we discarded or missed.

Watch the video, and let us know what your favorite movie character look is.

Insanely Badass STAR WARS Inspired Animated Short - SubWars

I don't think anything can prepare you for what you're about to watch. This is a animated short film created by Sean Soong called SubWars, which as you will see was inspired by Star Wars. This is just a hell of a lot more bloody and violent.

The story follows an old man on a subway. No one will offer up a place for him to sit, so the old man goes ballistic with a light saber, bloodily slicing and dicing anyone who crosses him. It's extremely entertaining and what awesomeness is all about. This is probably going to be the coolest thing you see all day, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the complete badassery of an old man unleashing his fury!

TOP GUN 2 Is Inching Toward Production with Tom Cruise and Tony Scott

The last thing we heard about this Top Gun sequel was that The Town screenwriter Peter Craig was going to be working on the script for the film. It sounds like things are coming along as the studio is looking to get Top Gun 2 into theaters before they end up doing another Mission: Impossible movie. Paramount film group president Adam Goodman recently did an interview with THR, and when asked about a new Mission: Impossible film he said,

We'll likely make a Top Gun sequel with Tom Cruise first. Jerry Bruckheimer would produce, with Tony Scott returning to direct. All parties are moving ahead. We've hired Peter Craig to write the script.

This little statement says a lot. It basically confirms that the movie is definitely happening, Tom Cruise will be back to reprise his role, and Tony Scott is going to direct it. This is one of those movies I was never really sure about, but hearing this information come out of the mouth of the guy who knows what's actually going on tells me that this movie is really going to happen. It's just a matter of time.

I'm excited to see where they take the story and where Maverick is in his life. There's so much they can do with this world; it would be great to see it go in a direction that will make fans of the original film happy. Let's just hope they don't work a ridiculous alien invasion into the story. Here's what Cruise had to say about the film in a previous interview last year:

I hope we can figure this out to go do it again. If we can find a story that we all want to do, we all want to make a film that is in the same kind of tone as the other one and shoot it in the same way as we shot 'Top Gun.'

I take it they don't want to do any CGI jet fighter scenes. Hey, if they can do it with real jets again, why the hell not?! It'd be a lot cooler than using fake animated jet fighters.

What are your thoughts on a Top Gun sequel? Is this something you'd want to see? Do you think it would be better using CGI jets or real ones?

Red-Band Trailer for HICK with Chloe Moretz and Blake Lively

Here's a red-band trailer for a depressingly intense drama called Hick, which stars Chloe Moretz, Blake Lively, Eddie Redmayne, Juliette Lewis, and Alec Baldwin. It's definitely a different role for Moretz than what we're used to seeing her in. The movie looks good, I just don't think I'll make an effort to go out and see it on the big screen.

The story follows a small town teenager Luli (Moretz) who escapes to Las Vegas, "leaving behind her alcoholic and abusive parents. Armed with her smarts, a pistol and pocket money, she hitchhikes her way west. Along the way, Luli crosses paths with Eddie (Redmayne), an unstable rebel with questionable motives and Glenda (Lively), a cocaine-snorting drifter on the run. Adapted from the critically acclaimed novel by Andrea Portes, this powerful story pulls you into a provocative world of drugs, seduction and murder."

The film is set to be released on May 11th, 2012. Dose this look like a film you'll want to go out and see in theaters?

Chloe Sevigny To Join AMERICAN HORROR STORY Season 2

Big Love's Chloe Sevigny is in the process of closing a deal to star alongside Jessica Lange in the upcoming second season of the insane TV series, American Horror Story. According to THR, "Sevigny would play Shelly the Nymphomaniac, a foil for Lange's character." So it sounds like she and Lange are going to have some interesting issues with each other.

I enjoyed the maddness in the first season, and I'm looking foward to seeing how season two turns out. It's going to be a much different show this time around as it won't be taking place in the same location, and all of the returning cast members will play characters that are completely different from the ones they played in Season 1.

Season 2 is set in a different era and it will take place at an East Coast insane asylum that would be run by Lange's character. This is actually a much better and creepier setting than the first season. It will in no way, shape or form be connected at all with the first season either.

Other returning cast member include Zachary Quinto, Evan PetersSarah Paulson, and Lily Rabe. Then there are new cast members including The Voice's Adam Levine and Lizzie Brochere.
