Blu-Ray Review: CONTRABAND

0
0

Contraband arrived on Blu-ray and DVD today from Universal.  Mark Wahlberg fans will surely enjoy this heist thriller, but I was not a fan. The cast includes Kate Beckinsale, Giovanni Ribisi, Ben Foster, Lukas Haas, Caleb Landry Jones, Diego Luna, and  J.K. SimmonsBaltasar Kormákur starred in the original and directed the remake of Reykjavík-Rotterdam (2008).

The film follows Chris Farraday (Wahlberg), a super smuggler who is now an upstanding citizen (and security system specialist). He has a wife Kate (Beckinsale) and sons, but his wife's brother Andy (Landry Jones) is trying to carry on the Farraday name as an active smuggler. After a botched smuggling run, Andy finds himself owing money to Tim Briggs (Ribisi). Chris tries to intervene and save his brother-in-law's life. When talking does not work with Briggs, Farraday is left with coming up with the money or Andy get's killed. Chris is forced to reunite his crew, and smuggle some counterfeit money in to save the day.

One of my biggest complaints about Contraband is the script and pacing. I could not find any characters in this movie that I could root for. I felt as though each character continued to make horrible choices and then for some luck was rewarded by someone else's stupidity. The pacing did not help either. I know that heist films are not action-packed, and was not expecting that. There were moments throughout the film that I wondered what the point was, because the film just dragged. The one really solid action sequence could not make up for those parts, unfortunately.

The acting is pretty solid for most of the cast. Wahlberg knows how to play this type of character very well, but he seems to have gotten too comfortable. I like roles that force him to push his comfort zone a bit more. I get that he is a tough guy, but his facial expressions do not vary enough to display emotions properly. Ben Foster and Diego Luna can do a lot better with their role choices, but it was good to see them on screen nonetheless. Ribisi is the only actor out of the bunch that transformed themselves (albeit minor) to become the thug he was in the film. J.K. Simmons has such a wide range of skills as an actor, I love seeing the different characters that he is able to portray. He is good at both humor and being a bastard in this role.

The special features are decent, but not out of the ordinary for a Blu-ray/DVD. I love Universal's on-screen menu system for their discs. The ease of maneuvering on the disc is pretty cool, and I wish more studios would release films in this manner. For the Blu-ray disc you get a standard run-of-the-mill commentary from director Baltasar Kormákur and producer Evan Hayes. I am not a huge fan of these commentary tracks, unless it is for a director that I am a huge fan of.

Deleted scenes seem to be a constant addition to every DVD. I would much rather see more behind-the-scenes videos or roundtable discussions with the actors and directors. This disc has only two videos that give us a look behind the scenes, “Under the Radar” is 17-minutes long and is pretty basic. The 8-minute “Reality Factor” is pretty cool because you get to see what goes into the stunts in the film.

This is one of the worst heist thrillers I have seen in a long time. For me it is on the same level with Man on a Ledge, in terms of bad.

When watching this movie I could not help but wonder why a remake was even given the green light. If you are wanting to watch a good heist movie then I recommend The Italian Job (original or remake). There are also far better Wahlberg movies out there.

Today's Geek Art features a great black and white image of Batman, created by Carlos Cabrera. I really like the tone of this Batman image, even though he's just sitting there ready to attack, I can feel the energy.

Description of THE HOBBIT Footage Screened at CinemaCon

0
0

I really wish I could have made it out to CinemaCon in Las Vegas this year. Unfortunately sometimes life says no you can't do that right now. So like the rest of you I have to live it through other the other blogs that were able to attend.

Warner Bros. screened ten minutes of new footage of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey at the convention, and it was screened in 48 Frames Per Second. This is the first time the film was screened in this new projection standard. I would have love to see this as The Hobbit is at the top of my most anticipated films of the year. Unfortunately the footage is getting mixed reviews on twitter, not the content, but the way it was filmed. Turns out this new higher frame rate of 48fps isn't selling a lot of people. Apparently it has kind of a TV/video vibe to it that a lot of people seemed to be disappointed with. That's a shame, but maybe it's a new standard that I think people just need to get used to. Up until now everything we've seen on the big screen is shown at 24fps, this is a big leap. I don't know, as I haven't seen the footage myself. Here's how Badass Digest felt about the 48fps:

The 48fps footage I saw looked terrible. It looked completely non-cinematic. The sets looked like sets. I've been on sets of movies on the scale of The Hobbit, and sets don't even look like sets when you're on them live... but these looked like sets. The other comparison I kept coming to, as I was watching the footage, was that it all looked like behind the scenes video. The magical illusion of cinema is stripped away completely.

That doesn't sound good at all, in fact that sounds terrible. Maybe this new frame rate isn't the future like Jackson and James Cameron claim it to be. Just from this description, I don't feel I need to see The Hobbit in this higher frame rate. Now here's a breakdown and description of the footage screened:

There was a lot of the helicopter shots you expect in a Lord of the Rings movie. Lots of shots of the dwarves trudging over mountains (again, this stuff looked spectacular). There was some of the business we saw in the trailer, with the introduction of the company of dwarves. There were also some quick shots - the company floating down a river in barrels, Gandalf running through a dungeon, being jumped on by a wild man of some sort, Legolas sliding in front of spider-webbed dwarves and knocking an arrow, warning he would kill them. There were also a handful of longer scenes that we saw.

We saw Bilbo's meeting with the three trolls. One positive aspect of the 48fps is that since everything looks so video, the digital creatures look more like they're on the set. The tone of the scene is very playfully threatening, with the trolls having dim reactions. The scene ends with the dwarves coming to Bilbo's rescue in a big battle against the trolls.

We also saw Gandalf investigating the rising darkness. In one scene he is at a table with Elrond, Galadriel and Saruman, talking about ancient tombs that have been opened - ancient tombs with such strong binding spells no one should have been able to get in. Then there's a scene of Gandalf investigating the open tomb, where he runs into a very silly Radagast the Brown, who has some birds under his hat (we also saw a shot of his sled being pulled by bunnies). It turns out the opened tombs belong the nine Ring Wraiths.

The biggest scene was Bilbo meeting Gollum. Despite being told what we were seeing were unfinished effects, Gollum looked great (and again, the 48fps gave him more of a sense of being actually there). The scene was cut a little slackly; I imagine the final version will be tighter. But it was good.

The footage screened sounds awesome! I can't wait to see for myself one day. What do you think about this 48fps business? Do you think it's as bad as it sounds?

Robert Rodriguez will Shoot FIRE AND ICE after Sin City 2

At Comic-Con 2011 director Robert Rodriguez announced that he would be developing a live-action remake of Frank Frazetta and Ralph Bakshi’s 1983 animated feature Fire and Ice. He revealed in an interview today that he plans to start shooting the film as soon as he's finished making Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. He proceeded to give an update on how far the film is coming along saying,

We’re almost done with the script, we’ve got it pretty much 70 percent there – I’m really excited about that one.

I think the timing is going to work out just right and we’ll have a finished script in the next month or so. So that we can start lengthier pre-production and we can go right into pre-production – well, we’re actually in pre-production, sort of, or we’ve been doing a lot of the previsualization. But that would be the next thing after Sin City.

This has the potential to be a hell of a great movie; something that fans of Frazetta's art work are really going to love. Rodriguez previously talked about how he wants to recreate the depth and artistry of Frazetta’s iconic work. He's going to use the same technology he used for Sin City to make the film. His goal is to make us feel like we just stepped into one of the artist's amazing paintings. He went on to say,

I’m really excited about that. For Frazetta fans, this will be the ultimate tribute to what he did, and inspired so many people. I think it’s going to be pretty powerful when people see it.

I truly hope he can pull off his vision for this movie, because it sounds awesome. I'd much rather see this film get made before Machete Kills and Sin City 2. Do you think Rodriguez has the ability to turn this movie into the kind of film he wants it to be?

Here is a description of the film:

From his stronghold in Ice Peak, the evil Nekron sends forth a wave of deadly glaciers, forcing humanity to retreat to Fire Keep, a kingdom ruled by a generous king. When King Jarol's daughter Teegra is kidnapped, young warrior Larn teams with the mysterious and legendary Dark Wolf, to rescue the princess and the realm from Nekron’s evil sorcery.

DREDD gets an R-Rating!

0
0

For those of you who were hoping that the new Judge Dredd movie would be a hardcore live-action adaptation of the comic, you're in luck. The MPAA just slapped a nice big R-rating on Dredd for strong and bloody violence, language, drug use, and some sexual content.

We knew that this is what the film's production team was going for, it's just nice to see that they followed through with what they said they'd do. Here's what producer Andrew Macdonald had to say about it back in 2010...

The main thing about Dredd is that it’s a fantastic comic that was completely messed up 20 years ago. Our idea is to make a very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie of Dredd in Megacity, so we’ve got to get the tone right. He’s not going to take off his helmet. His bike is going to feel real. He’s going to hit people and it’s going to feel real. There's been a change in comic-book movies; they were treated unseriously and now they're treated seriously.

The movie was directed by Peter Travis (Vantage Point) from a script written by Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Sunshine). It stars Karl Urban who looks like a badass in the lead role, and Olivia Thirlby. All along they've been wanting to make this movie right, and it's looking like that's exactly what they've done. I can't wait to see it!

Here's the synopsis:

DREDD takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary. The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Peter Travis bring DREDD to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip.

Dredd hits theaters September 21st, 2012. What do you think about this movie getting an R-rating?

Adrenaline Fueled TV Spot for SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN

0

Here's an extremely cool new TV spot for Snow White and the Huntsman that does a great job getting people pumped up to see this movie. The trailer was given the title Character/Role Call, and it takes you through a short list of characters in the film, while showing us some new footage to a pulsating musical score. For only being 30 seconds, this trailer gets its point across, and is extremely effective.

The movie is scheduled to be released on June 1st, 2012. What do you think of this latest TV spot?

The film stars Kristen Stewart as Snow White, Charlize Theron as the evil queen, and Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsman. I love the visual style of the film, and this looks like it will turn out being the better Snow White movie this year. It also stars Sam Claflin, Ray Winstone, Ian McShane, Eddie Izzard, Bob Hoskins, Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan, Stephen Graham, Ray Winstone, Lily Cole, Sam Spruell, Liberty Ross, and Noah Huntley.

Synopsis:

In the epic action-adventure Snow White and the Huntsman, Kristen Stewart (Twilight) plays the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen (Oscar® winner Charlize Theron) out to destroy her. But what the wicked ruler never imagined is that the young woman threatening her reign has been training in the art of war with a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth, Thor) dispatched to kill her. Sam Claflin (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) joins the cast as the prince long enchanted by Snow White's beauty and power.

STRETCH ARMSTRONG Movie Finds Writer

Dean Georgaris (The Manchurian Candidate) has been hired to write Stretch Armstrong for Hasbro and Relativity Media. Variety reports that the project is planned as an action-oriented family film, instead of a live-action cartoon strictly for kids. The film is being produced by Hasbro's Brian Goldner and Bennett Schneir, along with Relativity's Ryan Kavanaugh.

Stretch Armstrong was launched by Hasbro in 1976 and relaunched in the '90s as a toy that can be stretched repeatedly and always returned to his original size. Taylor Lautner was originally attached to star as the titular character when the project was at Universal Pictures. The film is slated for release on April 11, 2014. The story will be based on the popular toy, and is being staged as a franchise.

Georgaris also wrote such films as Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life and John Woo's Paycheck before Manchurian Candidate. He also produced The Crazies and exec produced What Happens in Vegas. I am hopeful that Lautner is not attached to star, and think that Georgaris will do well with the script.

Are you looking forward to seeing Stretch?

Stephen King's THE EYES OF THE DRAGON getting Adapted for TV!

0
0

Holy crap! I seriously can't believe this is happening! Stephen King's 1987 fantasy novel The Eyes of the Dragon is one of my favorite books of all time. This is one of those books I read over and over again when I was a kid. I've always wanted to see it get a big-screen adaptation, but a TV miniseries will be just as good for me!

The project is set up over at the SyFy Channel, and it's being scripted by Michael Taylor (Battlestar Galactica) and Jeff Vintar (I, Robot). These TV miniseries are hit and miss for SyFy, but they have an obligation to knock this one out of the park. They need to do whatever it takes to turn this classic book into an incredibly epic miniseries.

I think one of the main reasons this is finally getting made is because of the success of HBO's "Game of Thrones". We can only hope the production value of The Eyes of the Dragon will end up being just as detailed and incredible.

The story is set in the realm of Delain and it centers on a teenage prince who is falsely accused of murdering the king, who happens to be his father. The prince is imprisoned in a high tower, and he has to figure out a way to escape, so he can clear his name, and confront the diabolical wizard who's really responsible for his father’s death.

I couldn't be more excited about this book finally getting a live-action adaptation. I just hope it turns out to be worth the wait. Other King TV adaptations in the works include; Showtime's miniseries based Under The Dome and HBO will be taking on the TV part of Ron Howard's epic adaptation of the Dark Tower series.

Here's a detailed plot description:

THE EYES OF THE DRAGON takes place entirely within the realm of Delain (which itself is located within In-World from THE DARK TOWER series). It is told from the perspective of an unnamed storyteller/narrator, who speaks casually and frankly to the reader, frequently adding his own commentary on characters' motivations and the like.

The King's magician, Flagg, seeking to destroy the Kingdom of Delain, sees his plans being ruined by the good heart of Queen Sasha. After Sasha gives birth to Peter, a noble and worthy future king, Flagg realizes that his position, his plans, and his life may be in danger because of Peter. When Sasha is pregnant with a second son, Flagg seizes the opportunity. He forces the Queen's midwife to cut Sasha as the second son, Thomas, is born. Sasha bleeds to death and Flagg begins plotting to remove Peter. As Peter becomes a teenager, he begins the custom of bringing a glass of wine to his father before bed each night. Flagg decides to use this as a means of framing Peter. He dissolves a poison called "Dragon Sand" in a glass of wine and delivers it to the king after Peter leaves. Previously, in an attempt to win Thomas' friendship, Flagg had shown him a secret passage where Thomas could spy on his father.

Unbeknownst to Flagg, when he delivers the poison, Thomas is watching through the glass eyes of the mounted head of Roland's greatest trophy, the dragon. Flagg plants evidence incriminating Peter. After a brief trial, during which the judge decides Peter is guilty, he is locked up in the enormous tower called the Needle in the center of the city. Thomas is then crowned King, although he is only twelve years old; due to his youth and his fearful inexperience, he allows Flagg enormous amounts of power. At the start of his long stay in the Needle, Peter manages to send a note to the judge who convicted him, Anders Peyna, with the seemingly innocuous requests to have his mother's old dollhouse and napkins with his meals. Peyna is puzzled by the requests, but, seeing no harm in them, grants them.

Five years later, Peter escapes from the Needle, having used the toy loom in the dollhouse and threads from the napkins to make a rope. After the escape he and his allies rush to get Roland’s bow and arrow. However, it is not to be found because Thomas had it once they got into the king's "sitting room". Flagg, now revealed as a demonic being, is about to kill them when Thomas reveals himself and tells Flagg that he (Thomas) watched Flagg poison Roland. Thomas shoots Flagg in the eye, but Flagg uses magic to disappear and escape. At the end of the novel, Peter is declared to be the rightful king. Thomas, who has become deeply hated in Delain, sets off alongside his butler, Dennis, to find Flagg. They find him and they confront him, but the narrator does not reveal the outcome.

Disney Animated Short PAPERMAN - Plot Description and Logo

A team of animators over at Disney have been working on a new short film called Paperman. Up until today not much was known about the project. It is being directed by John Kahrs, a former Pixar employee who also worked on the Disney film Tangled. Apparently, the short will have a unique and different kind of animation technique and style.

Above you'll find the newly released logo for the short, and below you'll find the the first story description.

Introducing a groundbreaking technique that seamlessly merges computer-generated and hand-drawn animation techniques, first-time director John Kahrs takes the art of animation in a bold new direction with “Paperman.” Using a minimalist black-and-white style, the short follows the story of a lonely young man in mid-century New York City, whose destiny takes an unexpected turn after a chance meeting with a beautiful woman on his morning commute. Convinced the girl of his dreams is gone forever, he gets a second chance when he spots her in a skyscraper window across the avenue from his office. With only his heart, imagination and a stack of papers to get her attention, his efforts are no match for what the fates have in store for him. Created by a small, innovative team working at Walt Disney Animation Studios, “Paperman” pushes the animation medium in an exciting new direction.

Sounds like it will be a fun little story to see, but I'm more interested in this new animation technique that's being used to bring the story to life. I don't know why, but I'm expecting to be blown away by this; they're really hyping up this new technique. The short will make the film festival rounds, and will most likely be shown before Disney's next animated film, Wreck it Ralph.

Thor and Punisher: War Zone star Ray Stevenson has joined the highly anticipated seventh season of Showtime's Dexter! He will face off against Dexter as the leader of a Russian organized crime syndicate. This will be a recurring role throughout the next season. The actor also co-stars in the upcoming Thor sequel and G.I. Joe: Retaliation. What do you think of Stevenson taking on our favorite serial killer?

Season 7 is set to premeire on September 30th, 2012. I'm excited as hell to see how this next season plays out. I'm also a little nervous, the last episode that aired was pretty freakin' crazy! Did you watch last season yet? If not, get caught up on that shit right now! If you have....

SPOILER WARNING............

Soon after Deb accepts the fact that she has some non-sisterly feelings for her step-brother, she walks in on Dexter as he finishes off his last victim of the last season. What the hell is Deb going to do? Where is this going to take their relationship? It's maddening to be left with such a hardcore cliffhanger!

AXE COP Headed To Fox's Animation Domination HD

Axe Cop is headed to Fox for it's late-night Animation Domination HD block. THR reports that the show is being adapted from the web comic about an "ax-wielding police officer and his loyal team of allies as they fight bad guys." The web comic was created by then 5-year-old Malachai Nicolle and his 29-year-old brother, Ethan. The 90-minute animation block is being overseen by Nick Weidenfeld and Hend Baghdady, who used to be at Adult Swim.

Here is what Weidenfeld had to say about the show:

Axe Cop is one of the most creative, hilarious and naturally viral comic properties to emerge in the last decade. I've hoped someone would adapt Axe Cop for television for years and couldn't be happier that we get to be that someone. Axe Cop has all the makings of an iconic animated series and it will help set the tone for Fox’s new late-prime Saturday animation lineup.
Fox has ordered six quarter-hour episodes. The series first began on Jan. 25, 2010, and will launch on Saturdays at 11 p.m. starting next year. Be sure to check out the digital installments of Axe Cop which can be seen here.

Incredible Trailer for John Hillcoat's Bootlegging Film LAWLESS

0
0

Director John Hillcoat's new film Lawless looks incredible! I don't know why, but as much as I was looking forward to this movie, I didn't think it would look this good. The movie used to be titled after the book it's based on The Wettest County in the World, written by Matt Bondurant. The badass looking film tells the true story of Bondurant's grandfather and their moonshine exploits in Virginia during prohibition. The movie boasts an incredible cast that includes Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Guy Pearce, Gary Oldman, and Mia Wasikowska.

Here's the synopsis:

Gangster meets Western in the true story of the freewheelin' Bondurants brothers, bootlegging siblings taking the law into their own hands. This is the story of the rural hard-men that created the big city gangsters. Brazen and fearless, these young rebel brothers helped build the American Dream in this exuberant tale of what was to become crime's first major gold rush.

The youngest brother, Jack, fancies himself the next Al Capone; he dreams of sharp suits, guns, girls and fast cars, no matter the cost. Ambitious and impulsive, he takes the family's small-scale moonshining operation to the big leagues, to impress the gorgeous but off-limits Amish girl, Bertha. The middle brother, Howard, is the brawling muscle – loyal but reckless – never one to turn down a taste of white lightning. And eldest brother, Forrest, reluctantly accepts the changing times with grace and grit, leading the family with strength of character and silent determination against the beginnings of corporate greed. An enigmatic and stunning Maggie comes to town with a hidden past, igniting his passion and almost saving him in the process. As the Bondurants' legend grows, so too does the danger, and it's not long before the brothers must face the consequences of their transgressions, or rewrite the myth and the law themselves.

The movie hits theaters on August 31st, 2012, but I'd love to watch it right now. Watch the trailer and let us know what you think about this new John Hillcoat film!

Jack White Will Write, Produce, and Perform the Score For THE LONE RANGER

Jack White has won Grammys, plays multiple instruments, and has even secured a spot on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, but he's never worked on a film score... At least, not until now. Variety reports that Disney has hired the multi-talented singer/producer/actor to write, produce, and perform the score for their upcoming western produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer.

"Gore [Verbinski] hatched the idea and Johnny was thrilled with it," Bruckheimer told Variety. "We're all very excited to have [Jack White] on board." I'm a big fan of when established artists stretch their creativite muscles and enter the realm of movies, and some recent success stories include The Chemical Brothers, Basement Jaxx, and Trent Reznor.

Are you a fan of Jack White's music, and do you think he can pull off the score to a western adventure like this?

Pixar Announces THE GOOD DINOSAUR and DIA DE LOS MUERTOS

Pixar has revealed the title of their upcoming dinosaur film, The Good Dinosaur, which is set to be released on May 30th, 2014. The movie envisions a world in which the asteroid that hit the earth and killed all dinosaurs ended up missing Earth. The result has been described as a hilarious tale depicting a world where dinosaurs never went extinct. The movie is being directed by Bob Peterson (co-director/writer, Up, Finding Nemo) and is being produced by John Walker (The Incredibles, The Iron Giant).

The studio also announced a new animated film project they're working on based on the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos. Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich and producer Darla K. Anderson are heading up the film's production. Día de los Muertos means Day of the Dead, and here's a description of the holiday:

The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. It is particularly celebrated in Mexico, where it attains the quality of a National Holiday, and all banks are closed. The celebration takes place on November 1–2, in connection with the Catholic holidays of All Saints’ Day (November 1) and All Souls’ Day (November 2). Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed and visiting graves with these as gifts. They also leave possessions of the deceased.

Scholars trace the origins of the modern Mexican holiday to indigenous observances dating back hundreds of years and to an Aztec festival dedicated to a goddess called Mictecacihuatl. The holiday has spread throughout the world: In Brazil, Dia de Finados is a public holiday that many Brazilians celebrate by visiting cemeteries and churches. In Spain, there are festivals and parades, and, at the end of the day, people gather at cemeteries and pray for their dead loved ones. Similar observances occur elsewhere in Europe, and similarly themed celebrations appear in many Asian and African cultures.

The studio also set a release date of June 19th, 2015 for director Pete Doctor's new movie, Untitled Pixar Movie that Takes You Inside the Mind. The film will take us on a journey inside a little girl's mind where her emotions are the characters.

All of these films seem to go back to Pixar's classic storytelling formula. I don't think any of them will be as good as their upcoming movie Brave, though. I like how that movie broke the mold of what they're known for doing.

Cool Fan-Made Poster for BATTLESHIP

"You sunk my Battleship!" Guys, I'm going to be straight with you - I don't even know if Liam Neeson himself uttering that line in the big screen version of Battleship could redeem this thing. Director Peter Berg has dropped around $200 million on a board game adaptation (forehead slap) that --and this is the brilliant part--apparently doesn't have any connection to the board game (double forehead slap). Why call it Battleship, then?

Frustrations aside, our friends at FirstShowing pointed us to this fantastic piece of artwork from Tumblr artist Rezaldi Wibi. As you can see, it's part of the recent trend of minimalist poster art that's been sweeping the web over the past few years (we've featured many of these on the site before), but I like this one because it's more than just oblique shapes - there's some actual detail in here, so it's a bit more involved than some of the SUPER simple minimalist art that we've seen lately.

This is easily my favorite Battleship-related item of all time--way better than the boring old standard movie posters--and because I didn't often play the game as a kid, I like it even more than the game itself. Do you like this piece of artwork more than any official piece of marketing the film has had so far?

Iron Man 3 director Shane Black offered up a few details on the film that I know most of you will want to read. During the Disney presentation at CinemaCon, Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige showed a sizzle reel that included the writer and director talking about the where the story will take Tony Stark.

According to comingsoon, Black described the movie as a "technological thriller" and a "crisis movie" set in the world of "international war, arms and terror," saying that they will "put Tony Stark through the wringer" as they explore the trials of being Tony Stark. Although no villain has been revealed for the film, he said the villain will be one that will "frighten in today's world."

I'm excited that Black is at the helm of this third film in the franchise. it sounds like they've got a great story planned that fans are going to love. Are you looking forward to seeing Iron Man 3, or do you think it's all going downhill after the epic Avengers movie?

Disney's WRECK IT RALPH To Feature Classic Video Game Character Cameos

Disney Animation is currently developing an incredibly fun sounding film called Wreck It Ralph, which follows an old school video game arcade style bad guy named Ralph, who is a 9 foot tall, 640 pound character that lives in a pile of garbage. His job in the video game is to destroy cities that will only to be built back up again by the good guy with a magic hammer named Felix. Ralph is jealous of all the attention that Felix gets because he is the hero. Ralph goes on an adventure around the arcade he lives in, jumping from game to game looking for a way to prove that he can be a good guy and a hero. Of course, he just doesn't fit in with any of the games. Ralph isn’t content with his fate of being a villain. Some of the games he jumps in on are a Halo type video game and a game called Sugar Rush, which poses a threat to the arcade in which Ralph resides.

The film is a comedy adventure that is being directed by Rich Moore (The Simpsons) and will feature the voices of John C. ReillySarah SilvermanJack McBrayer, and Jane Lynch.

Because this world take place in a classic arcade with classic video games, it allows for the inclusion of some classic characters from these games. I was actually hoping we would see some well known video game characters in this movie. There was some footage of the film recently screened at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, and thanks to our friends from /Film we have confirmation of some of the characters that make cameos in the film. Those characters include...

  • Bowser from Super Mario Bros.
  • Doctor Eggman from Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Kano from Mortal Kombat
  • A Ghost from Pac-Man
  • Zangief from Street Fighter
  • Coily the Snake from Q*bert

I imagine we're going to see a many more characters in in the film, and it will be fun to see who they are. Hell, I'm surprised at that list of characters above! In a previous statement, the director said,

I love the idea of a very simple 8-bit video game character struggling with the complex question: ‘isn't there more to life than the role I've been assigned?’ In his quest for the answer, we journey with our hero through three visually distinct video game worlds. It's unlike anything anyone's seen before, and I'm thrilled to be to creating it here at Walt Disney Animation Studios.

I loved what I saw from this film at D23, and I'm excited about seeing the movie! What other video game characters do you hope to see in this movie?

Here's the official story synopsis:

Wreck-It Ralph (Reilly) longs to be as beloved as his game’s perfect Good GuyFix-It Felix (McBrayer). Problem is, nobody loves a Bad Guy. But they do love heroes… so when a modern, first-person shooter game arrives featuring tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (Lynch), Ralph sees it as his ticket to heroism and happiness. He sneaks into the game with a simple plan—win a medal—but soon wrecks everything, and accidently unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens every game in the arcade. Ralph’s only hope? Vanellope von Schweetz (Silverman), a young troublemaking “glitch” from a candy-coated cart racing game who might just be the one to teach Ralph what it means to be a Good Guy. But will he realize he is good enough to become a hero before it’s “Game Over” for the entire arcade?
