Disney Wants Chris Pratt as the New INDIANA JONES

This is something fans have been wondering about since Guardians of the Galaxy debuted, but now it's more than just speculation: Deadline is reporting that Disney "has set its sights" on Chris Pratt to play Indiana Jones in a "revival" of the franchise. Whether that means a complete reboot or a sequel with flashbacks (to allow Harrison Ford one more appearance as the famed archaeologist) remains to be seen, and the outlet cautions that things are still very early in the process right now.

Pratt, who became famous for his hilarious work on Parks and Recreation, has become a huge star in the wake of Guardians of the Galaxy. He has Jurassic World coming up this summer, and has lined up a Guardians sequel and The Magnificent Seven remake opposite Denzel Washington. Fans have already been teased with the idea of Pratt as Indy when a fan-made Photoshop piece made the rounds last year, and it appears that Disney saw how well everyone took to the concept and is now eyeing the young actor to follow in Ford's footsteps.

We really don't even need to have the conversation about whether or not Disney should recast Indiana Jones, because it's inevitable. The studio spent a lot of money for Lucasfilm and all of the properties that came with it, and if you think that they're going to leave money on the table when they could be making boatloads of it with a new Indiana Jones movie, you're delusional. We've already seen how things turned out when Paramount brought Ford back for a new adventure a few years ago (ugh), so hopefully Disney goes the Star Wars route on this and gives the property to a young filmmaker who was influenced by the original movies and allows him or her to play in that sandbox. If someone has to replace Ford as Indy, Pratt seems like as good a choice as any.

Paul Feig Reveals Cast of GHOSTBUSTERS Reboot

A new Ghostbusters movie has been in the works for so long that I honestly never thought we'd see it. But it's looking more and more likely, and today the film took another giant step forward. Writer/director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Heat) tweeted photos of his leading ladies for the film, and they include the previously-rumored Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, and Saturday Night Live stars Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones.

McCarthy and Wiig were sort of expected additions, but it's especially nice to see the SNL ladies earn the potential for breakout stardom here. McKinnon has been my favorite part of the long-running sketch show for the past couple of years, and it's cool to see Jones start to be seen by a wider audience (she also just appeared in Chris Rock's Top Five). Deadline says these deals are still being negotiated, but if Feig is sure enough to publish this photo, then I think it's as close to a done deal as it gets. Looking forward to seeing these ladies lead a new team of Ghostbusters?

SUPERGIRL Art By Des Taylor — Collection

Artist Des Taylor has a style that feels wonderfully vintage. Taylor put a year's worth of art into a collection and I added in a few more. I've always liked the character of Supergirl/Kara Zor-El as a contrast to Superman. For starters, she's a girl and usually much younger than Superman; that mixture of naivety and teenage angst are layer with a never-give-up attitude. Also she has storylines that could never have existed with Superman or even with Superboy.

If you like cosplay, checkout our "Supergirl Best of Cosplay Collection."

For those of you who have beaten GTA V and become bored with going on random rampages through the streets of Los Santos, maybe this video will give you some inspiration about how to spend your time in the virtual world. ErasableNinja has compiled all of the best BMX bike tricks he pulled off in GTA Online over the past year into a single video, and the results are pretty freakin' impressive. There's a moment at the 1:47 mark where my jaw fell open at how he managed to pull off a certain move, and it's safe to say that I'm going to be spending the next week or so trying to land that one myself.

Review: DOPE - The Biggest Hit at Sundance '15 So Far

$

Writer-director Rick Famuyiwa begins his latest film, Dope, by throwing the three different definitions of the word up on screen:

  1. an illicit, habit-forming, or narcotic drug
  2. a stupid person
  3. A slang word that describes something that is extremely cool

Typically, if someone begins a speech with “Webster’s dictionary defines yada yada as blah blah blah,” you’d be completely justified if you spent the rest of their speech day-dreaming. However, you'll be doing yourself a great disservice if you tune out while watching this film, or miss it when it’s properly released. Famuyiwa does indeed incorporate all three meanings of the title into this fast-paced gem that takes the typical coming-of-age high-school comedy and masterfully weaves in the kind of visual flair and storytelling devices normally only found in heist movies.

Dope follows Malcolm, Jib, and Diggy, three high school outcasts from Inglewood, California who are obsessed with ‘90s hip hop culture and slang (third definition, ✓) , play in a punk band, and are into other "white things" like "skateboards and Donald Glover." The three sexually frustrated high-school seniors get in way over their heads when they are invited to the birthday party of the neighborhood drug dealer. When rival gangs and police show up, Malcolm unwittingly escapes with a shipment of a new kind of party drug (first definition, ✓) stashed in his backpack. Soon after Malcolm realizes what he is in possession of, he and his close-knit friends find themselves evading the police, FBI, and dangerous thugs while also juggling college interviews, taking the SATs, and finding a date for prom.

The young leads — Shameik Moore as Malcolm, Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel) as Jib, and Kiersey Clemons (Eye Candy) as Diggy — have incredible chemistry, and that magic shines brighter as their characters navigate through their increasingly bizarre situation and are forced to get rid of the drugs, one way or another. The comedy is elevated even higher when they enlist the help of their friend Will (Workaholics star Blake Anderson), who is brilliant when it comes to computer hacking, but overall a very stupid person — aaaaand ✓, though this one is checked off a lot throughout the film. The movie also features Zoë Kravitz (X-Men: First Class), and is narrated by Forest Whitaker, who also served as a producer on the film.

Dope feels familiar yet fresh, slightly predictable at times but never pastiche. If I could submit a definition of this film to Webster’s Dictionary, it’d be:

  1. What Risky Business would be like if John Singleton and Guy Ritchie teamed up to remake it.

It’s the biggest purchase at this year’s Sundance Film Festival so far, with Open Road Films and Sony Pictures paying $7 million to distribute the film, so you’d be a dope not to watch this movie when it’s released.

Yesterday, news broke that Daniel Brühl's character in Captain America: Civil War would be Baron Zemo. Having only a cursory knowledge of the character, I read a lot of long wiki posts to try to learn more about him. Thanks to the team at THINKAboutTheINK and host Alan Kistler, there is now a much quicker and concise way to become familiar with Baron Zemo in all his many incarnations.

INTERSTELLAR / FANTASTIC FOUR Trailer Mashup Works Surprisingly Well

After months of silence, the first trailer for Josh Trank's Fantastic Four debuted this morning. You've probably seen it by now, but in case you haven't, watch it here. The director and writer/producer Simon Kinberg have provided a commentary for the trailer as well as some details on their influences for the film in a new interview, so be sure to check those out if you're interested.

A lot of people have pointed out the similarities between this teaser and a Christopher Nolan movie, citing the "realistic" tone, the contemplative score, and even a shot of a plane that looks very much like a similar shot from The Dark Knight Rises. But since Fantastic Four deals with inter-dimensional travel and has a considerable amount of sci-fi in it, perhaps the most apt comparison is to Nolan's most recent film, Interstellar.

YouTube user GunsAndJR had the same thought, and he cut together a mashup video that combines Matthew McConaughey's voiceover from one of Interstellar's teasers with the images from the Fantastic Four teaser, and it actually works pretty well. Thanks to my Facebook friend Rudie Obias for pointing this out.

Dirty Poster for TED 2, Trailer Coming Soon

Universal Pictures has released a filthy new poster for Seth MacFarlane's Ted 2 featuring our favorite foul-mouthed talking stuffed bear. Look at it, read the tag line... get the joke? Ok, good. It's simple yet effective. The first trailer for this film is expected to be released online tomorrow, so stay tuned!

The first movie ended up being the highest-grossing R-rated comedy of all time. Hopefully the sequel brings more great laughs. Mark Wahlberg is set to reprise his role in the film, which will focus on Ted fighting in court for the right to have a child with his human girlfriend. Morgan Freeman plays a legendary civil rights lawyer who helps him out.

Amanda Seyfried co-stars in the movie, and Liam Neeson and John Slattery will have small roles as well. The movie hits theaters on June 26th, 2015. I thought the first film was hilarious, and I'm hoping that the sequel will be even funnier.

Even though it wasn't perfect, I thought The Maze Runner was an incredibly entertaining movie. It is also the latest victim of the Screen Junkies' Honest Trailers. Liam Hemsworth Offered Lead Role in INDEPENDENCE DAY 2

Director Roland Emmerich is prepping to shoot Independence Day 2, and casting is underway. According to TheWrapLiam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games, The Expendables 2) has been offered a leading role in the sequel. There's no word on if he has accepted, but he would be stupid not to. He should feel lucky that he was even offered the role. The guy's not a very good actor.

The movie is said to take place 20 years after the events of the first film, and Will Smith will not return to reprise his role. Both Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman are expected to return, though, so that's a plus! Michael B. Jordan has also been rumored to be up for a part in the movie.

Production for the film will start in May, and the most recent draft of the script comes from Carter Blanchard. Before he came along, Emmerich and Dean Devlin wrote several drafts of the script along with James Vanderbilt. I may not be a fan of Hemsworth, but I don't think his inclusion in the movie will hurt it. After all, it's Independence Day. Audiences will be happy as long as there's a big battle with an advanced alien race.

The movie is set to hit theaters June 24th, 2016.

Insane Darth Vader Fan Art by Furio Tedeschi

Check out this striking piece of Star Wars fan art created by Furio Tedeschi. It gives us one of the most badass fan-made character designs of Darth Vader that I've ever seen. I especially like the fact that he's not wearing his iconic helmet, and he looks like one evil bastard. He's a lot more frightening here than when we saw his real face for the first time in Return of the Jedi. I was never a big fan of that potato head look. This version is much better. The suit design is pretty cool too. What do you think?

The Director of THE RAID Wanted to Make a HIT-GIRL Spinoff Movie

Director Gareth Evans has proven to be one of the most talented action movie directors that the world has to offer. He blew audiences away with The Raid movies, and his fans are eagerly waiting to see what his next film project will be. At one point in his career, though, he was a looking to direct a freakin' Kick-Ass spinoff film centering around Hit-Girl.

While talking with IGN, comic book writer Mark Millar revealed that he had discussed a Hit-Girl spinoff film with the director, but unfortunately, due to his busy schedule it never happened. Here's what Millar said:

“Before Kick-Ass 2 came out we’d been talking about a Hit-Girl spin-off movie. We’d even talked to a director – we had a couple of calls with Gareth Evans, who I absolutely love. He’s an amazing director. But Gareth’s now busy.”

Last year, Chloë Grace Moretz said that she was done playing Hit-Girl, which makes sense as I don't think we'll ever see another Kick-Ass movie made. If Evans did ever came on board to direct a spinoff film though, I wonder if she would change her mind and jump into action. I love the character, and the thought of a spinoff film being directed by Evans is exciting as hell. I know it will never happen, but it's interesting to know that at one point it could have if the timing was right.

Would you want to see a Gareth Evans directed Hit-Girl movie?

About a month ago we showed you a really cool jacket that was based on the NASA space suit. Today we give you your first look at some Adidas shoes that are based on the retro space suits that the astronauts wore. The shoes were designed by Raf Simons, and they have been included in Adidas’ 2015 line of products. Adidas offered the following statement:

"Inspired by vintage astronaut suits and backpacks, moulded and machined details similar to authentic closures, zippers and straps are added. Shiny versus matte distressed materials complete the look of outer space."

These are perfect for your beautiful early morning jogs on the moon! I seriously have to get myself a pair of these.

STAR WARS: BATTLEFRONT — EA Reconfirms Launch With THE FORCE AWAKENS

It's almost been 10 years since a new Star Wars: Battlefront game was released. After several failed attempts, the game went into development at EA's DICE Studios in 2013. We've previously posted a teaser trailer, full trailer, and news that the game was coming in the holiday season of 2015.

Yesterday, on EA's earnings call, CFO Blake Jorgensen gave an update on the gam,e reconfirming that it will be "aligned with" the release of of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. He also confirmed that the game will be not be based on the forthcoming movie locations, but familiar worlds seen in the original trilogy like Hoth and Endor.

As for the game's release, EA is going to be putting a considerable push into its marketing, calling it a "very large activity."

Jorgensen continued, saying:

"We think there's huge potential for that title. More to come in the next couple of months on that as more about the movie comes out as well as more about our title comes out. You should consider that a very large activity for us [this year] and a very large focus--similar to how we've thought about Battlefields in the past."

Several gamers have lots faith in DICE's development on games like Battlefield which required lots and lots of patches. My hope is that that we get a solid game on launch, but that not been the trend with games in general lately.

Star Wars: Battlefront is coming holiday 2015, on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Identify These 2015 Movies From A Single Image...If You Can

I'm normally pretty decent at games like this, but there are a few here that are just baffling to me. Sploid pointed us to this piece of art by Silenzio, a French artist who created this table full of icons of upcoming 2015 movies. A few are obvious — the lightsaber is Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the T-rex head is Jurassic World, etc. — but there are a handful that I honestly can't figure out. The little numbers on the tiles indicate whether that film is a sequel, and which number sequel it is - so the gun in the bottom left would be Spectre, because it's the 24th Bond film.

Can you name them all?

First Teaser Trailer for WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER Netflix Series

When David Wain directed 2001's Wet Hot American Summer, there's no way he could have known that half of the cast of his cult comedy would blow up and become major players in Hollywood. But a sequel has been whispered about for a long time, and now it's finally happening this summer as an eight-episode series on Netflix. The first teaser trailer for the show has been released, and it confirms the original cast is returning: Elizabeth Banks, Michael Ian Black, Bradley Cooper, Judah Friedlander, Janeane Garofalo, Joe Lo Truglio, Ken Marino, Christopher Meloni, Marguerite Moreau, Zak Orth, Amy Poehler, David Hyde Pierce, Paul Rudd, Molly Shannon, and Michael Showalter.

And the best part? Even though the actors have aged fourteen years since the original's release, this series is going to be a prequel. What a genuinely great idea — I can't wait to head back to camp.

CineFix has released the newest episode in their Art of The Scene series, and this one focuses on the Chestburster scene in Ridley Scott's Alien. The nine minute video gets into everything that helped make the scene possible. The best part is the reaction of the unwitting actors when the blood started to fly. Apparently, what we saw on screen was edited to make things look less bloody. Wow!

Sundance '15 Review: THE OVERNIGHT with Schwartzman, Scott, and Schilling

$
0
0

Writer-director Patrick Brice’s second feature, The Overnight, mines many of its laughs from breast pumps, prosthetic penises, and paintings of butt holes — and trust me, those aren’t the weirdest things in the movie. But don’t let the inclusion of those broad gags fool you, the film has a stellar ensemble cast and brilliantly crafts one awkward situation after the other, never failing to delightfully play with the audience's expectations.

The Overnight takes place over one adventurous night in the lives of Alex (Adam Scott) and Emily (Taylor Schilling), a couple who have recently relocated to Los Angeles with their young son. Uncertain if they'll be able to make new friends, they happily accept a dinner invite from Kurt (Jason Schwartzman), a fellow parent they meet at the park. Upon arriving for dinner, Alex, Emily, and their son instantly hit it off with Kurt, his glamorous French wife Charlotte (Judith Godrèche), and their son. Entranced by the couple's carefree spirit and their beautiful LA mansion, Alex and Emily go along with Kurt and Charlotte’s fun yet increasingly questionable and uncomfortable activities that kick off as soon as the kids are lulled to bed.

Even though the story's crack at the sexual frustration of thirtysomething parents is a bit clumsy, the humor is on point and the film is more than worthwhile as a mere showcase for this perfectly balanced cast, who are totally game to push their uncomfortable scenes to the limits in order to achieve some genuinely surprising and sidesplitting moments. As the magnetic and magnanimous Kurt, Schwartzman fires on all comedic cylinders, never losing an ounce of charm through every twist and turn his character takes. Godrèche is absolutely alluring and holds her own amongst her seasoned comic castmates, whom have all proven their comedic talents on the small screen — Scott with Parks and Recreation, Schilling with Orange is the New Black, and Schwartzman with Bored to Death. Anchoring the picture are Scott and Schilling, who have great onscreen chemistry and play off Schwartzman and Godrèche equally as well as they are paired off in different combinations throughout the night.

The Overnight fits in well with executive producers Mark and Jay Duplass’ mumblecore catalogue (which includes Brice’s directorial debut, Creep). What gives this film an edge and a chance to garner a wider audience is the star power it has and its easily digestible, almost episodic feel (and runtime — 80 min.) that Netflix scrollers and binge watchers will find hard resist.

Video: John August Teaches You How To Write Movies

When it comes to teaching people how to write screenplays, John August is one of the most valuable resources aspiring writers have available to them. The writer of Go, Big Fish, and tons of other films has a great podcast and a website dedicated to talking about screenwriting and pointing people in the right direction with tips and tricks from someone who's been in the Hollywood system for many years.

The Academy has apparently taken notice of the fact that August is an excellent teacher, because they recently released (via /Film) a video of August that was filmed in his office in which the writer basically lays out his process for writing a movie. It's mostly basic stuff, so nothing will go over your head and you won't get lost in any technical jargon. But maybe it'll be enough to inspire some writers out there to take a fresh look at that troublesome project you just haven't been able to finish. Sometimes gaining a new perspective is all it takes, and August has some solid tips for crafting a story that I think a lot of you might find helpful.

Rumor: Guillermo del Toro's JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK Characters Revealed

If I had to make a list of people who have the most projects in development at any given time, Guillermo del Toro would have to be near the top of the list. The affable Mexican filmmaker has worked on a ton of projects beloved by the geek crowd, and one of the latest that he's been teasing for years is Justice League Dark, a DC Comics movie based on the supernatural team of heroes that handles situations the regular Justice League isn't quite equipped to deal with. El Mayimbe at Latino-Review recently relayed a new rumor about which characters would be leading that film, should it ever actually make it into production:

The line-up of the group was expected to include Swamp Thing and The Spectre, so it's sort of surprising that there's apparently been a bit of a shift toward some different characters during the past few drafts of the screenplay. Del Toro has spoken in the past about how Swamp Thing was definitely a part of his story, so it's strange to hear that may no longer be the case. But Mayimbe does label this as a rumor, so things could still change by the time the movie ever hits the big screen.
