Hasbro to Develop Big Screen Adaptation of GOBOTS?

0

hasbro-to-develop-big-screen-adaptation-of-gobots

The GoBots are a staple of my childhood. I think I own more GoBots toys than I did Transformers because they were cheaper. With all of the 1980s cartoon and toy properties being developed as feature films, I guess it was only a matter of time before GoBots joined in on the party.

The property never really caught on like Transformers did, so it eventually died off. One thing that GoBots and Transformers had in common, though, was the voice of Peter Cullen, who played both  Optimus Prime and Tank. Now, thanks to TFW2005, we've learned that Hasbro recently filed documents to the United States Patent and Trademark Office for a new GoBots trademark under "distribution of motion pictures, ongoing television programs" and "Toys, games and playthings, namely, toy vehicles and accessories for use therewith."

They are obviously interested in resurrecting the GoBots, but who knows if anything will actually happen with it. I think it would be kind of cool if it did. Even though everything about GoBots was cheap, I still thing there's an opportunity here to make a badass GoBots movie that could be better than Michael Bay's Transformers if done right. Here's a description:

Leader-1 and his closest allies pursue Cy-Kill to earth, where they are forced to befriend certain humans. Among them is astronaut Matt Hunter, whose team has been implicated falsely in the destruction of the space shuttle they piloted in part because of the collusion of NASA consultant Dr. Zebediah Braxis with the renegades. With the help of their troubled newfound human friends, the Guardians must defend both Earth and Gobotron from Renegade tyranny! The Challenge of the Gobots series features an impressive cast that includes a number of voiceover contemporaries like Peter Cullen (Optimus Prime from Transformers) as Tank, B. J. Ward (Scarlett from G. I. Joe) as Smallfoot, Arthur Burghardt (Destro from G. I. Joe) as Turbo, Phil Hartman (Saturday Night Live), and Frank Welker (who has done voiceovers on what seems like half the animation made over the last 30 years) as Scooter and Zeemon. It also stars SAG Lifetime Achievement Award winner Brock Peters (Joseph Sisko from Star Trek:Deep Space Nine, Admiral Cartwright from Star Trek IV and VI) as General Newcastle, and Grammy and Prism Award winner Rene Auberjonois (Odo from Star Trek:Deep Space Nine, Clayton Endicott III from Benson) as Dr. Zebediah Braxis, both of whom would become semi-regulars throughout the series.

Do you think it's possible to make a decent GoBots movie?

Before They Were Famous Oscar 2015 Edition - Video Compilation

before-they-were-famous-oscar-2015-edition-video-compilation

Screen Junkies has released a fun video compilation called “Before They Were Famous, #3” and it spotlights several of the 2015 Oscar nominees such as Benedict Cumberbatch, Reese Witherspoon, Ethan Hawke, Emma Stone, and Michael Keaton. Before they became the big stars that they are now, they had to start somewhere, and a lot of the things they were featured in early on in their careers were far from Oscar-worthy. It's pretty funny seeing how a lot of these actors got their start.

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Pre-Credits Battle Scene Tease

avengers-age-of-ultron-pre-credits-battle-scene-tease

The recent issue of Empire Magazine provides some interesting details regarding a pre-credit battle scene with the Avengers in Avengers: Age of Ultron. I'll just throw out a Spoiler Warning now for anyone not looking to learn anything else about this movie. But you clicked on the article, so you obviously are here to keep reading.

According to the report, the superhero team pays a little visit to Hydra operative Baron von Strucker, who is played by Thomas Kretschmann. He is hiding out in an East European castle and he has Loki's scepter in his possession. When talking about the sequence, director Joss Whedon described it as being a "pre-credits Bondian blow-out."

Some big things happen there, and when it's over the superhero team is flying back to New York City in Tony Stark's quinjet, and everyone seems to be very distraught. Here's a description of what is happening in this scene, and it gives us an idea of how hardcore this battle must have been:

As Stark is flying the ship, [Robert] Downey Jr. goes and sits in the pilot's seat. [Jeremy] Renner lies down on a table in the middle of the jet and clutches his stomach while a fake drip is attached to his arm. It's clear that, whatever went down at von Strucker's, it has left the Avengers' ace archer in considerable distress. As the dialogue plays out, it becomes clear that [Mark Ruffalo's] Bruce Banner has Hulked out, or what he calls a "code green," during the assault on Strucker's fortress, and is deeply troubled by it. [Scarlett Johansson's] Natasha tries to reassure him - "If you hadn't been there, there would have been double the casualties." Banner grimaces, and replies with, "You know, sometimes exactly what I want to hear isn't exactly what I want to hear." Seeking back-up, Natasha turns to [Chris Hemsworth's] Norse god. "Thor, report on the Hulk?" she asks. Hemsworth immediately lights up and lets rip with a rousing tribute to all the violence unleashed by the Hulk, filled with words like "screams" and "victims" and "whimpering". Seeing that it has the opposite effect to that intended on Banner, the God of Thunder turns God of Blunter, stammering and stumbling, digging himself deeper into a hole.

We've seen parts of this movie opening in the trailers that have been release in the film. It just seems like what we've seen is very small in comparison to what actually goes down. I'm excited to hear that the film is going to open up strong! I'm sure Whedon will keep the momentum going throughout the entire movie. The movie hits May 1st, 2015, and the anticipation is killing me!

FANTASTIC FOUR Reboot Teaser Trailer Is Here!

fantastic-four-reboot-teaser-trailer-is-here

20th Century Fox has released the first teaser trailer for Fantastic Four, and in all honesty, it actually looks like it could be really cool. A lot of fans have been dishing out hate on this movie since it was first announced, I'm curious to see what everyone thinks about it now that we have some footage to form an actual opinion. Director Josh Trank has given these characters a whole new origin, and it actually might work. I hoped this movie would turn out good, and now I'm excited to see more.

FANTASTIC FOUR, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.

The movie stars Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, and Toby Kebbell, and it comes out on August 7th, 2015.

Update:

Trank and writer Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past) breakdown the teaser trailer (here).

BATMAN: RETRIBUTION Fan Film Featuring the Villain Victor Zsasz

I've got a pretty good fan made short film for you to watch today called Batman: Retribution. It features the infamous serial killer villain Victor Zsasz. I've always liked this villain because of how jacked up he is. This guy is evil as hell, and he carves a tally mark somewhere on his body for every victim he kills. The short was created by Bean Dip Productions, and I think some of you might enjoy it. I thought they did a decent job bringing this villain to life. Check it out and let us know what you think.

Review: TEN THOUSAND SAINTS with Ethan Hawke and Asa Butterfield - Sundance 2015

review-for-ten-thousand-saints-with-ethan-hawke-and-asa-butterfield-sundance-2015

When looking for a good independent film at Sundance, there are a lot of hot topics the movies tend to focus on. These topics range from coming-of-age stories to stories surrounding death, or ones dealing with heavy issues like drugs, teen pregnancy, homosexuality, homelessness, and poor parenting. Ten Thousand Saints is a film that manages to comfortably fit all these issues into one movie and still have room for some good laughs.

Ten Thousand Saints follows the story of a drug using teenager named Jude, played by Asa Butterfield, who, after a life-changing tragedy, is sent to New York by his mother to live with his pot-smoking father, Les (Ethan Hawke), who left them when Jude was nine. While there, Jude begins to clean up his life and gets to know his father more, as well as making friends with his father's girlfriend's daughter and his best friend's straight-edge brother.

The story is truly amazing, and as previously mentioned, tackles a lot of issues the world currently deals with. This is a film that makes you think about the lives of others instead of your own, which is a strong compliment for any movie. It's all the more impressive that it manages to do this without seeming preachy or over the top. All too often, films — particularly independent films — try to strong-arm a message into a movie that crowds the film with too much going on and makes the film seem insincere. This movie seamlessly weaves the lives of its characters and each of their own struggles together in a unique way.

Butterfield has grown a lot since Ender's Game. His performance is strong and special, and at the beginning of the movie, I didn't care for his character too much. He was whiny and inconsiderate, or, in a word, a teenager. However, as he grew in different ways, he became likable and I rooted for him more. One particular moment in which the whole audience cheered was when Jude cut off his long emo bangs that had been hanging in front of his face for the first half. Butterfield has begun to prove that he may be ready to tackle some older roles.

Emile Hirch, Hailee Steinfeld, Emily Mortimer, Juliane Nicholson, and Avan Jogia make up the rest of the cast, and they all are spectacular in their respective roles, each bringing an individual set of strengths and struggles. The real star of the show, however, is Hawke. His charm and wit amplify each scene he is in. From the very beginning of the movie, he wins you over with the touching yet honest conversation he has with his 9-year-old son telling him he's adopted. In the hands of another actor, his character could have come off as slimy and inconsiderate, but Hawke manages to make you love him even in his lowest of moments.  And during his high moments, it makes you realize how great of an actor Hawke really is.

Altogether, this is your basic cookie cutter coming of age indie flick. But it manages to shake up the ingredients and put them together so well that it leaves you wanting more. If you like independent films, this is definitely one you'll want to see when it comes out. If anything, maybe you'll leave it with a better outlook on the lives of the less fortunate.

Wonder Woman: "The Art of War" Statue

I never caught any of these while they were airing, but Cartoon Network used to run shorts on Saturday mornings in a block called DC Nation that featured superhero characters from the DC Comics stable. Back in 2013, there were a handful of Wonder Woman entries created by artist Robert Valley, and now DC Collectibles is releasing a collectible statue by Jonathan Matthews based on Valley's art work. The super leggy version of Diana is straight from the '70s, and if you're a collector, I imagine this would be a coveted piece of art that would look great on a shelf.

FANTASTIC FOUR — Teaser Trailer Break Down by Director Josh Trank & Writer Simon Kinberg

The teaser trailer for Fantastic Four was released very early this morning and if you haven't seen it you can watch it here. Trailers really are a film in its best form and I'm honestly impressed by what I've seen so far. This does not feel like a superhero movie but a science fiction movie, which makes sense when approaching how the powers of the team are attained.

Josh Trank, who directed Chronicle, and Simon Kinberg, who wrote X-Men: Days of Future Past, have a strong filmography. But over the course of production, deviation from the source material has brought out a lot of hate from geeks.

Trank and Kinberg sat down with Yahoo to break down the newly released trailer. The way they are approaching the movie plus the tone and quality of what I see in the trailer have me completely sold.

Edgar Wright Wrote a Steampunk Sequel to OLIVER TWIST

edgar-wright-wrote-a-steampunk-sequel-to-oliver-twist

Writer and director Edgar Wright has completed a script for an interesting new film called Dodge and Twist. The story is set in the 19th century, and it's set in a steampunk Victorian England. The project was first announced back in 2013, and the first draft of the script was written by Cole Haddon, who worked on the NBC series Dracula

Film Divider reports that the project has been kicking around at Sony Pictures for a while. Apparently, Wright does not plan to direct the feature as he is currently busy with two other films — Baby Driver and Grasshopper Jungle. The film was previously described by THR as follows:

Taking a page out of the recent Robert Downey Jr.-starring Sherlock Holmes movies, Twist takes pickpocketing rivals Oliver Twist and Artful Dodger and re-imagines them 20 years down the road. The two are on opposite sides of the law and get embroiled in an affair to steal the Crown Jewels.

When they say the film "takes a page out of" the recent Sherlock Holmes movies, I assume the movie will have the same kind of tone and feel as them, but with more steampunk. This really could make for an interesting movie. I like the idea of a steampunk sequel to Oliver Twist, and the fact that the script was written by Wright is encouraging.

Tyrese Gibson Campaigning To Become The New GREEN LANTERN

0
0

Looks like Tyrese Gibson is taking a cue from his Fast & Furious co-star Vin Diesel and is campaigning to star in a superhero movie. But while Diesel scored his role as Marvel's Groot largely due to his social media presence (and he might have another in the works if he gets his way), Gibson is more interested in heading to the DC side to put his stamp on a familiar hero.

If you take a look at his Instagram page, you'll see a bunch of photos of him dressed as Green Lantern (the character's name is John Stewart, and he was DC's first major black superhero). Many of these are reposts created by fans, but there are a few that Gibson posted himself (including the first one), so he's definitely adding fuel to this fire and trying to build some buzz and get people ready for the idea that he might be playing the part.

Warner Bros./DC are reportedly planning a Green Lantern reboot film, but that particular movie doesn't have an official release date as of yet. We have to assume, though, that the character will appear in Zack Snyder's Justice League Part 1 and Justice League Part 2, so it makes sense that the studio execs would be having conversations right now about who would be good for the role. We all remember how the first Green Lantern film turned out, so I say let Tyrese have a shot at it. Why not?

I've embedded a few of the photos below, but head to his Instagram page to see all of them. The actor will next be seen in Furious 7, which hits theaters on April 3rd.

Rumor has it that.

THE AVENGERS Just Want To Dance in This Parody Video

What if The Avengers weren't gathered by Nick Fury to fight forces the world couldn't handle on its own? What if, instead, they were gathered by a scrawny white guy with a foreign accent and they all embraced their love of dance? Your mileage may vary when it comes to the actual humor on display here - the "you're black, so you must be able to dance" trope and an easy gay joke seemed pretty lowbrow to me - but there's some clever editing in this video from PistolShrimps, and I got a little kick out of seeing this dude framed into the same shots with some of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Take a look for yourselves below, and let us know what you think in the comments.

ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL Is Hilariously Heartwarming - Sundance 2015 Review

0
me-and-earl-and-the-dying-girl-is-hilariously-heartwarming-sundance-2015

Every year I go to Sundance, there's always one unique film gem that sticks out above the rest. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is that film this year, not just for me but for everyone that I've talked to that has seen it. This has taken my number one spot of favorite movie at the festival this year, and it is one I can see being on my list of favorites at the end of the year. It is seriously that amazing. It's one of those movies I'll be talking to people about all year every chance I get.

The film is a quirky, heartwarming coming-of-age comedy that has a gentle touch of drama. The story follows a high school teen named Greg Gains (Thomas Mann) who thinks he has mastered the art of making it through high school without making friends or enemies and avoiding social situations. That is until one of his acquaintances, Rachel (Olivia Cooke), is diagnosed with leukemia. His mom (Connie Britton) makes him go hang out with her, and through the time he spends with her they became very close friends and form an unlikely, charming relationship.

The writing in this film is brilliant and loaded with wit and amusing dialogue. The story was also told in the most beautiful way. I absolutely loved the characters. They are all extremely likable, but the main character in the film, Greg Gaines, was one of the most unique characters I've seen brought to life on the big screen in years. I loved his style and personality. The way that he looks at the world is refreshing, and it was interesting being able to relate to his outlook on life, because there were certain aspects of the character that were like me in high school. One of the more amusing things that he spent his time doing was making funny parody versions of classic films with his "business partner," Earl (RJ Cyler), and they're pretty damn amusing. Greg makes it very clear that Earl is his business partner and not his friend. It's just a way of protecting himself from his own personal issues.

Greg has built a wall around himself, but that wall is slowly broken down as he forms a relationship with Rachel. It's not a romantic relationship, it's something that transcends romance - something much deeper in terms of friendship and respect. You want to see a romantic relationship form between them, but it wouldn't have worked, and it doesn't happen. The film makes it very clear from the beginning that their friendship is doomed.

The journey that we take with Greg, Earl, and Rachel is a funny and emotional ride. After all, one of the main characters has cancer and is dying, but Greg has the kind of personality to make light of the situation and bring out the humor in the darkest situations. That is, until the reality of it sets in and things take a more serious turn. I also have to point out the the acting in the film by everyone involved is superb.

This was such a captivating movie to watch, and it's definitely a feel-good flick that tugs on your emotions. It has the power to bring on the tears if you allow it to. I truly hope that Me and Earl and the Dying Girl gets a wide theatrical release. Everyone needs to see this movie. I freakin' loved it, and you will too. Experiencing this movie was a pleasure. I'm really happy that I had the opportunity to see it.

The movie was fantastically directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, from a wonderful script written by Jesse Andrews. The movie also stars Nick Offerman (who was great as Greg's father), Molly Shannon (who played Rachel's mother), and Jon Bernthal (as a history teacher). Here's the description of the film:

Greg Gaines is an awkward, self-deprecating high school student determined to coast through his senior year as anonymously as possible. Avoiding social interactions like the plague, Greg spends most of his time remaking wacky versions of classic movies with his only friend, Earl. Greg’s well-meaning mother intervenes, forcing him to befriend Rachel, a classmate who's been diagnosed with leukemia. Against his better judgment, Greg concedes. Both Greg and Rachel are surprised—even shocked—to find out that they actually like each other. Tentative at first, this unlikely duo becomes inseparable. But when Rachel gets sicker, Greg’s well-fortified world is changed forever.
Bristling with wit from a clever screenplay by Jesse Andrews, director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon's second feature is a poignant coming-of-age tale peppered with hilarious graphics and enchanting performances from its mostly young cast. Starring Thomas Mann, whose layered portrayal of Greg could skyrocket his promising career, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl will tickle your funny bone and tug at your heart.

THE MATRIX - Seven Things You Probably Didn't Know

In the immortal words of Keanu Reeves: Whoa. Cinefix just released a new video breaking down seven things you probably didn't know about the Wachowskis' completely original, mind-blowing, philosophy-filled action extravaganza, The Matrix. I knew that Will Smith turned down the role of Neo, but other than that, all of this stuff was new info for me, and it makes me appreciate the film even more. Especially that part about Keanu doing his own stunt on the ledge of the building - that's nuts!

Aaron Taylor-Johnson on Quicksilver's Accent and Personality in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

0
0

We've seen Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Quicksilver in a few trailers for Avengers: Age of Ultron, but we haven't heard him speak or do anything other than stand and run. Empire interviewed him and we have a few excepts via CBM.

Taylor-Johnson on Quicksilver's personality:

"He's very agitated because everything runs too slowly for him. He's quick at everything. He's quick to lose his temper."

Quicksilver's relationship with his sister, Scarlet Witch:

"It's more about Pietro and Wanda together, a yin/yang where he's very physical and very protective of her and she's very internal and always mothering him. Pietro doesn't f-ing trust anybody. The only one he cares for and at the end of the day will jump in front of a bullet for is his sister, Wanda."

On the accent he will have in the film:

"We all wanted to pull it back to the comic book. That's why we did East European accents."

What it was like shooting the movie:

"Every time I enter or exit a scene I am a blur. I would perfect the skid really well. You know how you're a kid at school and on a rainy day in the playground the skidding would be a competition? It was like that. I was really good at skidding and not just in straight lines. I would run in and then do the scene and run out and then they'd have to do it exactly the same again but without any actors. A 'Pietro Pass' is what they'd call it. Then they might need an 'Iron Man Pass' and someone might go in dressed as a big Iron Man, and then a 'Hulk Pass' and they'd get the biggest stunt guy, who's like, f-ing 300lb of muscle and he'd stand there painted green."

I think Taylor-Johnson is a solid actor and it sounds like he had a lot of fun making Age of Ultron. We've already seen Quicksilver in the X-Men cineverse and based on what Taylor-Johnson shared, it sounds like they are radically different takes on the character.

The actor spoke about Evan Peters' version of Quicksilver in X-Men: Days of Future Past:

"That was already out there before I even signed the contract. If I'd cared that much, I would have said no. It didn't phase me for one minute. What I knew of it was that Evan Peters' Quicksilver was set in the '70s, and it was different. I didn't watch any of it while making Avengers, but I did see it recently, and it was fantastic."

Avengers: Age of Ultron opens in theaters May 1st (USA).

CHILD 44 Trailer - Tom Hardy Tracks a Serial Killer

I've seen two films by director Daniel Espinosa — the Swedish thriller Snabba Cash, and his American studio debut Safe House — and I enjoyed them both. Child 44, his newest film, is an adaptation of the best-selling 2008 novel that stars Tom Hardy as a Soviet soldier trying to track down a child-murdering serial killer. Ridley Scott produced the film, which also stars Noomi Rapace, Gary Oldman, Joel Kinnaman, and Vincent Cassel. Thanks to iTunes for the trailer. The film arrives in theaters on April 17th.

A politically-charged serial killer thriller set in 1953 Soviet Russia, Child 44 chronicles the crisis of conscience for secret police agent Leo Demidov (Hardy), who loses status, power and home when he refuses to denounce his own wife, Raisa (Rapace), as a traitor. Exiled from Moscow to a grim provincial outpost, Leo and Raisa join forces with General Mikhail Nesterov (Oldman) to track down a serial killer who preys on young boys. Their quest for justice threatens a system-wide cover-up enforced by Leo’s psychopathic rival Vasili (Kinnaman), who insists “There is no crime in Paradise.”

FANTASTIC FOUR — Josh Trank & Simon Kinberg Talk Influence

Michael B. Jordan (Johnny Storm) and Writer/Producer Simon Kinberg

Michael B. Jordan (Johnny Storm) and Writer/Producer Simon Kinberg

Today, the teaser trailer for Fantastic Four was released and director Josh Trank (Chronicle) and writer/producer Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past) broke down that teaser trailer. Late last night, Collider released a lengthy interview with the filmmakers and a couple of set photos.

Lots of things in the interview are summed up in a quicker way in the teaser trailer break down. I've pulled three quotes that expand on the creative team's thinking, influences, and marketing tack, so check those out below.

Director Josh Trank

Director Josh Trank

Trank on the film's early negative buzz and why they waited until now to release something.

"I think a lot of that stuff is stemming from the fact that we’ve consciously decided to not release anything official. This isn’t like The Avengers. Even when the first Avengers came out, there were four other movies that people were familiar with. The suits and the tone and the look and the feel.  So they could release those things or drop them on Twitter. — But this movie, we really want the audience to have the proper reaction to this material seeing it for the first time. You’ve really got to put your best foot forward. You can’t just leak an image to strike up a conversation. You want people to see something that has thought behind it. And the teaser should do just that."

When asked about what differentiates Fantastic Four from other superhero movies, Trank answered:

"I would say that the science fiction of it is a big thing that sets it apart from most of the other superhero genre films. I’m a huge David Cronenberg fan, and I always viewed Fantastic Four and the kind of weirdness that happens to these characters and how they’re transformed to really fall in line more with a Cronenberg-ian science fiction tale of something horrible happening to your body and [it] transforming out of control. And the potential for a hard sci-fi take on that material makes me really excited. I don’t really see that kind of potential and that kind of take being implemented on any of the other superhero movies that seem to be coming out in the next few years."

Kinberg on the film's influences:

"Yeah, I think The Ultimates is probably our biggest influence because it’s the younger Fantastic Four.  And a lot of the science specifics are there.  And a lot of the means of transformation we took from those books. As you’ll see a little bit in the trailer and a lot in the movie, there are influences really from the beginning of what Kirby and Stan were doing in the 60’s all the way up into the present day. I’ve done it both ways from adapting a specific storyline like Days of Future Past or jumping off like in First Class and using more of the mythology of the characters without necessarily adhering to an existing plot line. This is an origin story in many regards and it is inspired by The Ultimate Fantastic Four as much as anything else."

The teaser trailer has me completely sold and I'm jumping on the bandwagon. I love the science fiction take and can't wait to see more from this film.
