THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Has over an Hour of IMAX Footage!

Remember how incredible it was seeing those IMAX shots in The Dark Knight? There was only about 15-20 minutes of IMAX footage in that film, and it was pretty spectacular. Thanks to a report from The Wall Street Journal we learn today that Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises will include over an hour of IMAX footage! Over an hour! How awesome is that! This makes it the largest use of the IMAX format in a Hollywood film.

My preferred choice of movie-going is IMAX, especially when the film is shot in IMAX. I still think 3D is a gimmick, but IMAX is the future. I feel more immersed in an IMAX movie than a 3D movie, and I can't wait to see The Dark Knight Rises in the epic scale of IMAX badassdom.

It will be interesting to see who will be the first director to make a feature length IMAX movie, and what movie that film will actually be. Nolan seems to be leading the IMAX charge, so there's a solid chance it could be him. Here's what Nolan had to say about the IMAX format in a recent interview with the DGA,

[T]he operatic quality of 'The Dark Knight' and 'The Dark Knight Rises' felt very well suited to IMAX’s larger canvas. So it’s different depending on what film you want to do... We didn’t shoot IMAX for 'Inception' because we were trying to portray the reality of dreams rather than their extraordinary nature, so we used a handheld camera and shot it in a more spontaneous way.

For 'The Dark Knight Rises' we were on Wall Street with a thousand extras, and you can see everybody’s face in the frame. In some ways, I feel it takes me back almost to the silent film era, when they had those huge cameras. Trying to do things in more of a tableau fashion, it changes the way I direct a film, it changes the way I block the camera movement because of the size of the thing. The resulting image has so much power that you don’t need to cut in the same way, you can frame the shot slightly differently, you wind up with a slightly different feel.

What's your preference? 3D or IMAX? Why?

There really isn't any another way to describe it, other than, the most awesome thing you're going to see today. It is...what it is. And you love it. Don't deny it. Apparently there's more to come as well. I tried to think of a joke to go with this, but then again, I don't think it needs one.

Johnny Depp Explains his Tonto Look in THE LONE RANGER

A lot of people have been trying to wrap their brains around the look of Johnny Depp's version of Tonto in Gore Verbinski's The Lone Ranger. Especially that big ol' bird sitting on the top of his head. Personally I expected nothing less than from the actor who always goes a bit overboard on his movie looks. In a recent interview Depp discusses his look, which includes an explanation of the bird on his head.

[I] looked at the face of this warrior and thought: That’s it. The stripes down the face and across the eyes … There’s this very wise quarter, a very tortured and hurt section, an angry and rageful section, and a very understanding and unique side. I saw these parts, almost like dissecting a brain, these slivers of the individual.

He then went on to talk about the bird on his head,

I thought: Tonto’s got a bird on his head. It’s his spirit guide in a way. It’s dead to others, but it’s not dead to him. It’s very much alive.

Depp explains why he wanted to play Tonto and explains why it's so different than what fans of the original series know.

The whole reason I wanted to play Tonto is to try to [mess] around with the stereotype of the American Indian that has been laid out through history... especially Tonto as the sidekick, The Lone Ranger’s assistant. As you’ll see, it’s most definitely not that.

No matter what role Depp takes on, he always manages to entertain audiences, and he better do it with this movie because the success of The Lone Ranger pretty much rests on his shoulders. The movie comes out on May 31st, 2013, and it also stars Armie Hammer, Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner, Barry Pepper, James Badge Dale, Ruth Wilson and Helena Bonham Carter.

Do you think Depp has the power to make this the highest grossing western of all time?

Graphic Designer Stephen Wildish has created another alphabet poster focusing of Superhero films. This is the same guy who brought us the alphabet posters for the Films of the 1950s, 1960s1970s, Horror and Sci-Fi. I guess superheros were the next logical step. Here's a collection of movie posters straight from the floor at CinemaCon currently blowing up in Las Vegas. Thanks to Comingsoon we can bring you a look at some new posters for some upcoming films. There are posters for 47 Ronin, House at the End of the Street, Les Miserables, To Rome With Love, This is 40, Seven Psychopaths, Sinister and Resident Evil: Retribution. Check out all the posters below.

47 Ronin is being directed by Carl Rinsch and star Keanu Reeves. The movie is set in the 18th century and the story centers on a band of samurai who set out to avenge the death of their master.

The movie stars Jennifer Lawrence and Elzabeth Shue. A mother and daughter move to a new town and find themselves living next door to a house where a young girl murdered her parents. When the daughter befriends the surviving son, she learns the story is far from over.

The movie is being directed by Toby Hooper and stars Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe. An adaptation of the successful stage musical based on Victor Hugo's classic novel set in 19th-century France, in which a paroled prisoner named Jean Valjean seeks redemption

This is the poster to Woody Allen's new film. A story about a number of people in Italy, some American, some Italian, some residents, some visitors, and the romances and adventures and predicaments they get into.

This is 40 is the new Judd Apatow comedy that takes a look at the lives of Pete and Debbie a few years after the events of Knocked Up.

This movie has a great cast of actors that includes Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, Christopher Walken and more. The story follows a struggling screenwriter who inadvertently becomes entangled in the Los Angeles criminal underworld after his oddball friends kidnap a gangster's beloved Shih Tzu.

Scott Derrickson directed this film that stars Ethan Hunt. Found footage helps a true-crime novelist realize how and why a family was murdered in his new home, though his discoveries put his entire family in the path of a supernatural entity.

We all know who's involved with this one, and what it's going to be like. Alice fights alongside a resistance movement in the continuing battle against the Umbrella Corporation and the undead.

THE AVENGERS - Great Interview with Joss Whedon - Bigger than Life but Very Human

$

Here's another great interview with Joss Whedon in which he discusses The Avengers. He talks about the pressures of making the movie, compared himself to Nick Fury, revealed his favorite superhero combo in the film, and tells us what superpower he would like to have. One of my favorite quotes from the interview was at the end when he said this... "I think The Avengers is the kind of movie that I grew up wanting to make and thought they had stopped making." It's got to be awesome for him to have lived his dream of making this movie, and it's going to be awesome for us because it looks like he made the Avengers movie we all envisioned in our own geek minds.

Here's the question and answer session:

The Avengers is based on S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury trying to unite heroes with extraordinary powers and egos. Did you ever feel like Nick Fury, trying to bring the actors into a team concept, and how did you handle creative differences in this type of situation?

I felt very much like Nick Fury. He’s the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., literally, and that puts him at a remove from everybody, even if he likes them. He knows he’s putting them in harm’s way. Hopefully I’m not putting my actors in harm’s way.

Hopefully I’m not even making them uncomfortable, but I’m not nearly as intelligent or manipulative as Nick and I didn’t have as many problems because my actors actually wanted to be together. They enjoy each other.

But you do feel that responsibility that you’ve got to get all of these people to give their best. For (Fury) it’s in battle, and for me it’s when we’re rolling, to really come up with their best stuff and play off each other as well as possible, and you have a great responsibility to service them with your camera at the same time.

So I definitely felt some of the pressure, but I can see out of my left eye.

Did you have any particular combination of super heroes that you thought were the most interesting to see interact?

I love the Bruce Banner, Tony Stark relationship.

Bruce Banner’s the first guy Tony Stark’s come across who operates on his level intellectually, who isn’t a villain.

But I also love Tony and Steve (Captain America) and how much they can’t stand each other, and I’m very invested in Natasha and Hawkeye and their deep friendship, so, you know — oh — I love them all.

I hate this question (laughs).

What advice would you give to any student with ambitions of one day sitting in the director’s chair?

My advice would be (to) sit down. Now you’re in the director’s chair.

We live in an age where anybody can make a movie. If you have a phone, you can make a movie. OK, maybe not a huge movie, maybe phone-sized, but it’s there.

When I came up, you wrote a script, and you hoped and hoped. Or you raised enough money to make a short film.

Things are different now and the best way to get your work out there — not just as an offering to somebody else to hope they’ll make it, but to show yourself as a filmmaker and to learn as a filmmaker — is just make movies.

There’s no excuse not to now.

If you were going to insert yourself into a super hero movie, what powers would you have?

I would have the power of invisibility, and then I wouldn’t have to show up for as many shooting days.

College students have a lot of options this summer with movies to see during their breaks. Why should college students have it first on their list to see “The Avengers”?

I think “The Avengers” is the kind of movie that I grew up wanting to make and thought they had stopped making.

When I grew up, the summer movie was, literally, created as a concept, and all my life I wanted to do something like that, something like the first “Indiana Jones,” something that was steeped in character, in love of the genre that it was portraying, had intelligence, had real acting, had a story that unfolded and wasn’t just a sort of big premise that you already knew going in.

It’s a little bit bigger than life, but it’s very human.

More and more, summer movies have felt a little cynical. There are very big exceptions to that, but that has been the case when people throw so much money down.

They’re not interested in a story, they’re interested in just barraging you with excitement and imagery and brand names.

Marvel doesn’t operate that way. They care about the people. That’s why they hire some of the best actors in the business to play their heroes. This is an old-fashioned movie.

You can now jump up and shout for joy! Whedon sure does have a way with words and getting the fanboys and fangirls excited.

Here's an awesomely fun and rare collection of photos from the sets of the Star Wars trilogy. I don't think I've ever seen most these images, a couple of them might look familiar to you though. The photos give us more of a candid look at people goofing around on the set, and some of the other things used to help bring these movies to life. It would have been so cool to be a part of creating this iconic trilogy.

Cool New Image from THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN

Sony Pictures has released this cool new image from Marc Webb's awesome looking vision of The Amazing Spider-Man. I'm excited about what Webb is going to bring us with this movie. I like everything I've seen, and am pretty much am on board with his vision. It will be interesting to see what everyone thinks about it when it's released.

Here's the synopsis:

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and Aunt May (Sally Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets.

As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr Curt Connors (Ifans), his father’s former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

The movie stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, and is set to be released on July 3rd, 2012.

Jennifer Lawrence to Join THE GLASS CASTLE

Lionsgate will be developing a film based on a memoir by gossip columnist Jeanette Walls called The Glass Castle, and Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence is in talks to star. Lawrence is blowing up right now, and is landing some pretty incredible role. There are studios even fighting over shooting schedules so that they can get her in their films. As soon as I saw the actress in Winter's Bone, I knew she was going to be a big star. It's just kind of crazy seeing how fast it's happening. It will be interesting to see where her career goes from here.

TV screenwriter Marti Noxon has been hired to write the screenplay, she's worked on series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Prison Break, and Mad Man. The story will focus on her difficult childhood with her “dysfunctional but vibrant” family.

What are your thoughts on Jennifer Lawrence as an actress?

Here's a full description of the book:

Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and above all, how to embrace life fearlessly. Rose Mary, who painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family, called herself an "excitement addict." Cooking a meal that would be consumed in fifteen minutes had no appeal when she could make a painting that might last forever.

Later, when the money ran out, or the romance of the wandering life faded, the Walls retreated to the dismal West Virginia mining town -- and the family -- Rex Walls had done everything he could to escape. He drank. He stole the grocery money and disappeared for days. As the dysfunction of the family escalated, Jeannette and her brother and sisters had to fend for themselves, supporting one another as they weathered their parents' betrayals and, finally, found the resources and will to leave home.

What is so astonishing about Jeannette Walls is not just that she had the guts and tenacity and intelligence to get out, but that she describes her parents with such deep affection and generosity. Hers is a story of triumph against all odds, but also a tender, moving tale of unconditional love in a family that despite its profound flaws gave her the fiery determination to carve out a successful life on her own terms.

For two decades, Jeannette Walls hid her roots. Now she tells her own story. A regular contributor to MSNBC.com, she lives in New York and Long Island and is married to the writer John Taylor.

Watch the UNCHARTED Feature Length Movie Trilogy

While we all wait around for a live-action Uncharted movie to actually happen, Reddit user morphinapg created three feature-length Uncharted movies from the three video games that have already been released. He's edited together all of the cinematics from the games and edited them together to create these films. He also used the minimal amount of gameplay to connect the cinematics without creating any plot holes.

There was over eight hours of footage for the editor to go through and in the end Drake's Fortune ended up being 113 minutes long, Among Thieves turned out being 177 minutes long, and then there's Drake's Deception which got a crazy long run time of 3 hours and 16  minutes. If you've got the time the definitely are worth checking out. If you've played the games then you know how awesome they would be as movies.

So here's the first Uncharted film trilogy that we'll see. Hopfully Hollywood will get its act together and give us the live-action films this franchise deserves.

Movie Poster Round-up: CHERNOBYL DIARIES, REC 3 and HOUSE AT THE END OF THE STREET

$

Here's a collection of three movie posters for three fun looking horror-thrillers coming out in the near future. Which of these movies do you think will be the best one of the bunch, and why?

This horror movie was written and produced by Oren Peli, the guy who gave us the Paranormal Activity franchise.

Here's the synopsis:

"Chernobyl Diaries" is an original story from Oren Peli, who first terrified audiences with his groundbreaking thriller, "Paranormal Activity." The film follows a group of six young tourists who, looking to go off the beaten path, hire an "extreme tour" guide. Ignoring warnings, he takes them into the city of Pripyat, the former home to the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor, but a deserted town since the disaster more than 25 years ago. After a brief exploration of the abandoned city, however, the group soon finds themselves stranded, only to discover that they are not alone...

The film opens in theaters on May 25th. To watch the trailer for the film clic here.

The movie stars The Hunger Game's Jennifer Lawrence. I'm not sure what it is about actresses that start to see success, but they all tend to eventually make a horror thriller.

Here's the synopsis:

A mother (Elisabeth Shue) and daughter (Lawrence) who move into a new community and find themselves next door to a house in which a psychotic young girl murdered her parents. While the locals insist the girl vanished after the brutal murders, the young newcomer befriends the surviving son (Max Theriot) discovers the sinister story is far from over.

The film opens September 21st. Watch the trailer for the film here.

Here's a hardcore badass looking poster for Paco Plaza's Rec 3: Genesis.

Here's the synopsis:

Koldo and Clara are about to celebrate the most important day of their lives: their wedding. Everything appears to be running smoothly and the bride and groom and their families are enjoying a wonderful day; that is until some of the guests start showing signs of a strange illness. Before they know what’s happening, the bride and groom find themselves in the middle of a hellish ordeal, as an uncontrollable torrent of violence is unleashed on the wedding. Amidst the chaos, Koldo and Clara become separated and begin a desperate search for one another. What started off as an idyllic day quickly descends into a nightmare of the worst kind…

The movie will be released on VOD August 3rd, and it will get limited theatrical run September 7th.

HAYWIRE's Gina Carano to Join FAST AND FURIOUS 6

MMA fighter Gina Carano, who recently starred in Stephen Soderbergh's action thriller Haywire, is currently in talks to star in Fast & Furious 6. If cast, she'll join Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, and Dwayne Johnson who are all set to reprise their roles. Justin Lin will be back to direct the movie, and I imagine some of the other cast members will be coming back as well.

As of right now we know nothing about what this next chapter will be about. We do know that it's going to be more of a heist movie this time around, which could be very cool. It was also described as being "their most dangerous adventure yet." Fast 5 was a pretty awesome film, and a perfect transition into where the studio wants to take the franchise.

Carano would end up playing a kickass member of Johnson’s team, who I'm sure will be hunting down Diesel and Walker again. Fast 6 is scheduled for release on May 24th, 2013.

G.I. JOE: RETALIATION - New Character Poster Featuring Flint

Last week we brought you eight character posters for Jon Chu's exciting looking new film, G.I. Joe: Retaliation. The poster we bring you today features DJ Cotrona as Flint. I'll be honest, this is the least exciting character for me in this movie. If you look at the trailer and the other eight posters that were released, he's the least interesting character of them all. I guess there's a chance that he'll end up being a fun character. Maybe Storm Shadow will kick his ass.

The G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra; they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence.

The movie will be released on June 29th, 2012. What are your thoughts on the character Flint?

Jane Levy Will Have Prosthetics in EVIL DEAD Remake

The Sam Raimi-produced Evil Dead remake is on the way, and "Suburgatory" star Jane Levy has replaced Lily Collins as the female lead. We know that Bruce Campbell is producing, Fede Alvarez is directing, and Diablo Cody is doing revisions on the script, but we haven't really heard much else about the project up until now.

In an interview with The Marin Independent Journal, Levy spoke a bit about her role and what kinds of things we can expect from her character.

For a while, whenever I was asked what my dream role would be, my answer was always to play a killer or a psychopath. I get to do that in this movie, although I'll be possessed while I destroy my victims. So basically, it's a perfect job...

I really wanted to work on "Evil Dead" because of how different it is from "Suburgatory." I guess that's my main goal in this industry, to work on different stuff and to play a wide range of characters. That process of creating a new person is so fun for me. I love the initial makeup/hair tests before the start of a new job; I'm always campaigning for a new hair color or length, anything to look as different as possible.

This role also intrigued me because of how much I will learn, mostly technical stuff like special effects. That's fascinating to me. I had to get my body "casted" for this role so they can make me prosthetics. That process entailed getting your whole body covered in green goo, like the stuff they put in your mouth for a tooth casting, and then being papier-mâchéd. It was the coolest thing ever.

Check out the full interview for more information, but I'm happy that it sounds like these filmmakers are still looking for practical effects as opposed to relying too heavily on CGI here. I realize that's a boring stance to take - you've probably heard every geek ever say this exact same thing - but the reason it's such a common statement is because practical effects really do have a visceral impact on screen. Look no further than the 2011 prequel/remake of The Thing for an example of modern movie mentality winning out over what made the original such a timeless classic. Sounds like the 22-year-old actress will learn a lot on this project, and I look forward to seeing how this one differs from Raimi's original films.

If you haven't listened to it yet, check out The Not Just New Movies Podcast episode about The Evil Dead and Evil Dead II, and subscribe to the show on iTunes by searching for "GeekTyrant - NJNM" in the iTunes store. Are you looking forward to the Evil Dead remake?

This is just a fun piece Star Wars geek art paying tribute to that classic scene.

ENDER'S GAME To Film Partly in A NASA Soundstage

The film adaptation of Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game is one of geekdom's most highly anticipated movies of 2013. Gavin Hood is behind the camera directing an all-star cast of Asa Butterfield (Hugo), Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit), Harrison Ford, Viola Davis, Sir Ben Kingsley, and more.

MTV recently caught up with Bobby Cohen, an executive producer on Louis Letterier's Now You See Me who works with Ender's Game producer Roberto Orci, and offered up some details about the filming. Watch the video below.

So that's kind of cool. Between filming in a NASA stage and the recent photos posted on the official website, it definitely looks like the movie is embracing its sci-fi roots. Are you impressed with what you've seen so far with the movie version of Ender's Game?
