Rock of Ages Synopsis:

“Rock of Ages” tells the story of small town girl Sherrie and city boy Drew, who meet on the Sunset Strip while pursuing their Hollywood dreams. Their rock ‘n’ roll romance is told through the heart-pounding hits of Def Leppard, Joan Jett, Journey, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison, Whitesnake and more.

Neighborhood Watch Synopsis:

An outrageous comedy in which four everyday suburban guys (played by Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade) come together to form a neighborhood watch group, but only as an excuse to escape their humdrum lives one night a week. But when they accidentally discover that their town has become overrun with aliens posing as ordinary suburbanites, they have no choice but to save their neighborhood — and the world — from total extermination.

The Dictator Synopsis:

Baron Cohen plays a ruthless dictator who heads to the U.S. for a meeting at the United Nations and finds that his number two has replaced him with an unsuspecting sheepherder lookalike. As the dictator wanders the city, he meets the owner of an organic food store.

Watch Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway Sing on the Set of LES MISERBLES

One of the things that interested me most in Tom Hooper's adaptation of Les Miserables is how the actors would handle the music. The music written for the play is beautiful, and it's easy to see how actors could screw it up. Lets face it, just because you're an A-list actor doesn't mean you can sing. I do hope that they'll be able to pull it off though!

Here's a few videos from the set of the film giving us our first look at Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway singing one of the song from the film, Do You Hear the People Sing? The video also gives us a glimpse at the elaborate set of the film.

The story is set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, and tells the powerful story of "broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption—a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever." The film also stars Russell CrowesAmanda Seyfried, Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne, Aaron Tveit, and Samantha Barks.

The movie is set to hit theaters on December 14th, 2012. Check out the videos and let us know if you think these actors will be able to pull off these musical tunes.

Trailer for the Ed Harris and Jennifer Connelly Film VIRGINIA

$

Here's the first trailer to a new dramedy called Virginia that comes from screenwriter Dustin Lance Black and stars Ed Harris, Jennifer Connelly and Emma Roberts. This is Black's first attempt at directing a feature film, he blew up in Hollywood after he won an Academy Award for Milk. Since then he's written J. Edgar for Clint Eastwood and episodes of HBO's Big Love. Unfortunately this movie doesn't really look that good, but maybe some of you might see something in it that I didn't.

Here's the synopsis for the film:

Jennifer Connelly stars in the title role as a beautiful yet unhinged single mother who struggles to raise her son Emmett (Harrison Gilbertson) while dreaming of escaping her small Southern boardwalk town. Her long time affair with the very married, Mormon Sheriff Richard Tipton (Ed Harris) is thrown into question when he decides to run for public office. Things are further complicated when Emmett begins a romantic relationship with Tipton’s daughter (Emma Roberts). Virginia and the town–populated by Amy Madigan, Toby Jones, Yeardley Smith–are full of secrets and everyone knows Virginia can only keep things together for so long. VIRGINIA is a funny, touching drama that looks at the American Dream and what it takes to keep it together.

The movie comes out on May 18th, 2012. Watch the trailer and let us know if it looks like something you'ld be interested in seeing.

Bryan Fuller Talks NBC's HANNIBAL TV Series

Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daises, Heroes) recently sat down with EW to discuss Hannibal, the upcoming NBC drama. The show just got picked up for 13 episodes. The first couple of seasons will be based solely on five pages of back story from Thomas HarrisRed Dragon. The series will have Dr. Lecter solving crimes with FBI profiler Will Graham (Hugh Dancy). Audiences will follow Lecter while he is at large, which I think will be a nice change from our past interaction with the character.

Here is what Fuller had to say about plans for the first season:
It’s before he was incarcerated, so he’s more of a peacock. There is a cheery disposition to our Hannibal. He’s not being telegraphed as a villain. If the audience didn’t know who he was, they wouldn’t see him coming. What we have is Alfred Hitchcock’s principle of suspense — show the audience the bomb under the table and let them sweat when it’s going to go boom. So the audience knows who Hannibal is so we don’t have to overplay his villainy. We get to subvert his legacy and give the audience twists and turns.
Unlike other procedural crime dramas that have super-smart investigators, one of the investigators has a dark secret. Fuller goes on to describe the show by saying:
It really is a love story, for lack of a better description, between these two characters. As Hannibal has said [to Graham] in a couple of the movies, ‘You’re a lot more like me than you realize.’ We’ll get to the bottom of exactly what that means over the course of the first two seasons. But we’re taking our sweet precious time.
With 13 episodes, Hannibal will not have to rush. Fuller states:
Doing a cable model on network television gives us the opportunity not to dally in our storytelling because we have a lot of real estate to cover. I pitched a seven-season arc including stories from various [Thomas Harris] books.
Those of you familiar with the books will be pretty happy, Fuller has only changed the genders of a couple of them. FBI boss Jack Crawford is the same, but Dr. Alan Bloom is becoming Dr. Alana Bloom, and tabloid journalist Freddy Lounds is becoming tabloid blogger Fredricka Lounds.

I am excited to see Hannibal on NBC. Do you plan on tuning in for this show?

The Art of Movie and TV Title Design

$

I don't know about you, but I enjoy the hell out of a great title sequence! If they're good, they suck you right in to the movie or TV show you're about to watch. They're the first thing we see when the movie starts, and they basically set the mood and the tone for the rest of the film.

When I think of great movie title sequences, the first one that pops into my head is David Fincher's Se7en. That was the first title sequence I ever saw that just completely blew me away. There have been many other awesome title sequences since then, both old and new. But Se7en is burned into my brain. Here's a link to a few other aticles we've posted on title sequences.

Here's a great video from PBS’ Off Book that focuses on the art of the title sequence. It includes interviews with title sequence creators Peter Frankfurt and Karin Fong from Imaginary Forces, Ben Conrad from Logan, and Jim Helton of Blue Valentine. It also includes some samples of the title sequences they've created.

The credits are often the first thing we see when we watch a great film or TV show, but the complexity and artistry of title design is rarely discussed. Creators of title sequences are tasked to invent concepts that evoke the core story and themes of the production, and to create a powerful visual experience that pulls the viewer into the film's world. In this episode we hear the stories of some of the most inventive people working in the field, including the creators of the iconic Mad Men sequence, the hilarious Zombieland opening and "rules" sequences, and the stirring end credits from Blue Valentine.

Enjoy the video!

Want To Smell Like a New Apple Product? There's a Fragrance for That

Nothing beats that smell of opening up the package of a new MacBook Pro you just bought. A new fragrance by Air Aroma apparently captures that distinct smell of an Apple product unboxing. The scent was created for an upcoming exhibit taking place in Melborne, called De facto Standard.

The scent created for Greatest Hits encompasses the smell of the plastic wrap covering the box, printed ink on the cardboard, the smell of paper and plastic components within the box and of course the aluminum laptop which has come straight from the factory where it was assembled in China.

I find this hilariously odd. Sure it a nice smell for a few minutes while unboxing the Apple product, but I don't think I would go out smelling like one! I'm sure you're all dying to know how they made the fragrance, well...

The creation process included suppliers in the South of France sending over samples of fragrances with the aromas of glue, plastic, rubber and paper. The samples were then used as ingredients by Air Aroma fragrance designers to create a range of signature blend fragrances.

To complete the fragrance they observed the unboxing of a new Apple computer to source fragrance samples. On completion the laptop was sent back to Australia, together with the scent of an Apple Macbook Pro.

Would you actually go out on a date smelling like a brand new MacBook Pro?

New BATTLESHIP TV Spot - Global Hero

Another new TV spot for director Peter Berg's sci-fi action film Battleship has been released, and it has a few bits of new footage from the film thrown into it. The movie looks like an entertaining popcorn flick, and I don't expect it to be anything more. It has a solid cast of actors that includes Liam Neeson, Stellan Skarsgard, Taylor Kitsch, Brooklyn Decker, and then there's Rihanna

Battleship blows up in theaters on May 18th, 2012. Will you be throwing down your hard earned cash for this movie?

Synopsis:

Peter Berg (Hancock) produces and directs Battleship, an epic-scaled action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force. Inspired by Hasbro's classic naval combat game, Battleship stars Taylor Kitsch as Lt. Alex Hopper, a Naval officer assigned to the USS John Paul Jones; Brooklyn Decker as Sam Shane, a physical therapist and Hopper's fiancee; Alexander Skarsgard as Hopper's older brother, Stone, Commanding Officer of the USS Sampson; Rihanna as Petty Officer Raikes, Hopper's crewmate and a weapons specialist on the USS John Paul Jones; and international superstar Liam Neeson as Hopper and Stone's superior (and Sam's father), Admiral Shane.

AVENGERS Star Tom Hiddleston Writes Great Article Defending Superhero Films

$

I love the superhero films that are being made these days! And of course I love the superhero films of the past such as Superman, Batman among many others. These films actually served as our inspiration for starting GeekTyrant, in fact we launched the website at the same time as Jon Favreau's Iron Man.

There was a time when these comic book adaptations went through some disappointing phase with movies like Daredevil, Electra, Fantastic Four, X-Men: The Last Stand and a few others we like to tear apart. But for the most part, comic book movies are constantly evolving and getting better and better as time goes on. There's a place for these films in our lives, and they aren't going away anytime soon.

Marvel has gloriously cornered the market for these movies, and are epically adapting comics that at one point I honestly didn't think we would see so awesomely made. We've seen how comic book movies could go incredibly wrong, yet here we are on the verge of seeing The Avengers, which looks like one of the greatest superhero films ever. It's good to know that there are geeks out there with the same vision as us that are fortunate enough to make these movies the way we want to see them.

Tom Hiddleston, who plays Loki in Thor and The Avengers, recently wrote an incredible article for Guardian defending these superhero movies that we love watching so much. He makes some great points and I agree with what he had to say 100%. You can read the full article that he wrote below...

Earlier this year, beneath the wind-whipped tarpaulin of a catering tent in Gloucester, I was working on a film with the actor Malcolm Sinclair. Over scrambled eggs at an ungodly hour, he told me something I had not previously known: when Christopher Reeve was young, barely out of Juilliard, he was roundly mocked by his peers on Broadway for accepting the role of Superman. It was considered an ignoble thing for a classical actor to do.

I grew up watching Superman. As a child, when I first learned to dive into a swimming pool, I wasn't diving, I was flying, like Superman. I used to dream of rescuing a girl I had a crush on (my Lois Lane) from a playground bully (General Zod). Reeve, to my mind, was the first real superhero.

Since then some of the greatest actors have turned superheroes into a serious business: Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson in Batman; Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart, the first venerable knights of the X-Men, who have now passed the baton to Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy. In spite of 20 years of mercurial work in the likes of Chaplin and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, it was his rock-star-charismatic yet somehow humble Tony Stark in Iron Man that helped wider audiences finally embrace the enormous talent of Robert Downey Jr. And Heath Ledger's performance in The Dark Knight quite simply changed the game. He raised the bar not just for actors in superhero films, but young actors everywhere; for me. His performance was dark, anarchic, dizzying, free, and totally, thrillingly, dangerous.

Actors in any capacity, artists of any stripe, are inspired by their curiosity, by their desire to explore all quarters of life, in light and in dark, and reflect what they find in their work. Artists instinctively want to reflect humanity, their own and each other's, in all its intermittent virtue and vitality, frailty and fallibility.

I have never been more inspired than when I watched Harold Pinter speak in a direct address to camera in his Nobel lecture in 2005. "Truth in drama is forever elusive. You never quite find it but the search for it is compulsive. The search is clearly what drives the endeavour. The search is your task. More often than not you stumble upon the truth in the dark, colliding with it or just glimpsing an image or a shape which seems to correspond with the truth, often without realising that you have done so. But the real truth is that there never is any such thing as one truth to be found in dramatic art. There are many. These truths challenge each other, recoil from each other, reflect each other, ignore each other, tease each other, are blind to each other. Some times you feel you have the truth of a moment in your hand, then it slips through your fingers and is lost."

Big talk for someone in a silly superhero film, I hear you say. But superhero films offer a shared, faithless, modern mythology, through which these truths can be explored. In our increasingly secular society, with so many disparate gods and different faiths, superhero films present a unique canvas upon which our shared hopes, dreams and apocalyptic nightmares can be projected and played out. Ancient societies had anthropomorphic gods: a huge pantheon expanding into centuries of dynastic drama; fathers and sons, martyred heroes, star-crossed lovers, the deaths of kings – stories that taught us of the danger of hubris and the primacy of humility. It's the everyday stuff of every man's life, and we love it. It sounds cliched, but superheroes can be lonely, vain, arrogant and proud. Often they overcome these human frailties for the greater good. The possibility of redemption is right around the corner, but we have to earn it.

The Hulk is the perfect metaphor for our fear of anger; its destructive consequences, its consuming fire. There's not a soul on this earth who hasn't wanted to "Hulk smash" something in their lives. And when the heat of rage cools, all that we are left with is shame and regret. Bruce Banner, the Hulk's humble alter ego, is as appalled by his anger as we are. That other superhero Bruce – Wayne – is the superhero-Hamlet: a brooding soul, misunderstood, alone, for ever condemned to avenge the unjust murder of his parents. Captain America is a poster boy for martial heroism in military combat: the natural leader, the war hero. Spider-Man is the eternal adolescent – Peter Parker's arachnid counterpart is an embodiment of his best-kept secret – his independent thought and power.

Superhero movies also represent the pinnacle of cinema as "motion picture". I'd like to think that the Lumière brothers would thrill at the cat-and-mouse chase through the netherworld streets of Gotham in The Dark Knight, with helicopters tripping on high-tensile wires and falling from the sky, and a huge Joker-driven triple-length truck upending 180 degrees like a Russian acrobat. I hope that they would cheer and delight at the rollercoaster ride through the skies of Manhattan at the end of Avengers Assemble. These scenes are the result of a creative engine set in motion when the Lumières shot L'Arrivée d'un Train en Gare de la Ciotat in 1895. The trains just move a lot faster these days. And not just trains; trucks, bikes, bat-mobiles and men in flying, shining iron suits. The spectacle is part of the fun – part of the art, part of our shared joy.

How far I hope we have come since the judgment of Christopher Reeve's peers. Maybe playing superheroes isn't such an ignoble undertaking after all. "I still believe in heroes," says Samuel L Jackson's Nick Fury in Avengers Assemble. So do I, sir. So do I.

Is there anything you'd like to add to what Hiddleston had to say in this article?

Jaden Smith May Play BOY NOBODY For Sony Pictures

Jaden Smith could play Boy Nobody in a feature film from Sony Pictures. Variety reports that the studio is in talks to buy film rights to Allen Zadoff's novel. Negotiations are underway after Sony beat out 20th Century Fox. The book is the first in a planned trilogy about "a brainwashed teenage assassin who starts to regain his emotions. Little, Brown will publish the novel next spring."

The main character is reportedly "a teenage Jason Bourne." Zadoff describes him as a "young soldier trained not to feel; who could function in every situation without fear, sympathy or anger; who could assassinate strangers and then walk away emotionally unscathed."

Smith is currently filming M. Night Shyamalan's Another Earth. He has previously starred in Sony's reboot of The Karate KidThe Pursuit of Happiness, and the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still.

I am looking forward to seeing Another Earth, and actually enjoyed Karate Kid. Smith could turn into a young action star with this role. Do you think Smith is a good fit for this part?

Comic Review: JUSTICE LEAGUE #8

$
0
0

Tyrants.

And we’re back for another Justice League review. This time, in Issue #8 we meet the New 52’s Green Arrow. How does he hold up?

Review:
During another bout of gripping political swordplay between Steve Trevor and a congressional committee, we find out since the Justice League formed five years ago that they have not allowed a new member in. The Congressmen and women of course wants a new member in the League whom they can control and of course use to influence the group from within.

The bulk of this issue is a rather comedic montage of Green Arrow (aka Oliver Queen) interjecting himself into a number of Justice League missions trying to prove his mettle to the team. But each time, Arrow is chewed out from meddling before the League makes one dramatic exit after another. And mind you, Green Arrow trying to join the Justice League has absolutely nothing to do with the US government's would-be machinations.

What also is revealed during this montage is some very bad blood between Aquaman and Green Arrow that almost leads to some fisticuffs during Mr. Queen’s final run-in during a League mission.

Back at his lair, Arrow is approached by Steve Trevor, which is where we find out that he’s not all bluster and bragging. He wants nothing more than to help the League gain a social conscience. Trevor agrees to put Green Arrow on a team, just not the Justice League. Wonder what that will be.

The League are back on the Watch Tower as they vote on whether or not Green Arrow should be allowed to join, and the majority votes against his joining. Why you ask? Apparently there was a rather violent incident sometime back with a certain Martian Manhunter that made the League rather gun-shy toward prospective members. Makes sense.

Plus, we get part two of the Billy Batson/Shazam mini-story. Billy’s been moved to a new foster home and is still a Texas-sized asshole to everyone, making a fellow foster kid cry in the process. But it seems that he’s starting show some signs of empathy and getting some indication of his unique situation.

Conclusion:
This was a fun little issue with some great interplay between the League and Green Arrow, the latter being so the overachiever who wants to stand side-by-side with the big boys. I do like how despite Arrow’s swagger and cockiness, they didn’t make him a full-on meathead like GL in the earlier Justice League issues. Plus, he was not an impediment to the League, but actually helping them out on their missions. Should be interesting to see where Green Arrow ends up, which I’m thinking will be JL International.

Next month begins the next major arc in the series, which from what I read will feature the author of those mad scribbles in Issues 6 and 7 as the League’s new big bad. Let’s hope Lee and Johns bring it!

Can you believe it!? It's actually been one whole day since we posted anything from The Avengers. I can't even remember the last day that we didn't post any Avengers news. The streak ends today with two new international TV spots that Marvel has released for the movie. One of the spots focuses on the Hulk, the other on Captain America. Each spot offers a brief bit of new footage to make you happy.

MEN IN BLACK 3 - Two New TV Spots

Sony Pictures has released a couple of new TV spots for Men in Black 3 starring Will Smith, Josh Brolin, and Tommy Lee Jones. I remember when I saw the first movie for the first time, it was such a fun film to watch, and when it was over I couldn't wait to see more of them. It's pretty cool that we're actually going to get to see a third film, after part 2 I didn't think it would happen. The sequel was kind of let down, but it's great to see Barry Sonnenfeld back to direct the third. It looks like they've created another fun movie, and I'm looking forward to it. Men In Black 3 hits theaters May 25th, 2012.

Here's the Synopsis:

Agents J and K are back...in time. J has seen some inexplicable things in his 15 years with the Men in Black, but nothing, not even aliens, perplexes him as much as his wry, reticent partner. But when K's life and the fate of the planet are put at stake, Agent J will have to travel back in time to put things right. J discovers that there are secrets to the universe that K never told him -- secrets that will reveal themselves as he teams up with the young Agent K to save his partner, the agency, and the future of humankind.

Here's another great film clip from Marvel's The Avengers featuring a tense moment between Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson). This is an extension of a scene that we've seen in a few trailers in which Widow is trying to talk Banner into joining the team. The clip was shown a couple days ago on the Graham Norton Show. The avenger hit's theaters on May 4th, and I'm ready to see the Joss Whedon film in all of its epic glory!

Here's a new international poster for G.I. Joe: Retaliation featuring Storm Shadow looking like a complete badass. It's going to be awesome to see this Cobra assassin go up against Snake Eyes again. Now that I think about it, I hope we get to see a fight between Storm Shadow and Road Block as well, because that would be fantastic!

Here's the Plot Synopsis:

A follow-up to the 2009 release of G.I. JOE: RISE OF THE COBRA, which grossed over $300M worldwide, Paramount Pictures, MGM and Skydance Productions, in association with HASBRO and di Bonaventura Pictures, commences production on G.I. JOE: RETALIATION. In this sequel, the G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra; they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence.

The movie will be released in theaters on June 29th, 2012. What characters in this franchise would you like to see fight each other?

DARK SHADOWS - Hilarious International Trailer

Here's a great new international Chinese trailer for Tim Burton's Dark Shadows, and it's the best trailer I've seen for for the movie so far. It's packed full of some great new footage, but the part of the trailer that drives it home is a scene in which Barnabas is hanging out with a group of campers. I won't say what happens or what's said, but I think this film is going to be even funnier than we think.

The movie stars Johnny DeppMichelle PfeiferEva Green, Helena Bonham Carter, and Chloe Moretz. It comes out on May 11th, 2012. Enjoy the trailer!

Here's the Synopsis:

In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet—or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy...until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive.

Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles.

Also residing in the manor is Elizabeth’s ne’er-do-well brother, Roger Collins, (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger’s precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family, to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David’s new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.
