GHOSTBUSTERS Reboot Won't Hold Back on the Scares

When some plot details leaked out about the upcoming Ghostbusters reboot being developed by director Paul Feig, there were a lot of mixed reactions. Some fans seemed on board with the idea, but most of them hated it. Those leakedideas may not make it into the final film, but it gave us a sense of where they're headed with it.

During a recent interview with Empire Magazine, the director talked a little bit more about his version of the movie. A couple of the main points he makes is that he wants the movie to be seriously scary, but also maintain a PG-13 rating.

"I want ours to be scarier than the original, to be quite honest. Katie Dippold and I are so focused on wanting to do scary comedy. We don't want to hold back."

The first Ghostbusters film wasn't necessarily supposed to be about the scares. It was about the story and the comedy, which is why I love it so much. Feig has a knack for comedy, though, so it will be interesting to see what he brings to the table with that. He went on to say that he would like to make an R-rated version, but he'll restrain himself.

"The reason I do a lot of R-Rated comedies is that you want a movie to feel honest. But the Ghostbusters world doesn't need that level of swearing. We'll have to be PG-13 with this one. I would like to make it R-Rated, but I won't. You want the biggest number of people to watch it and not be put off by it."

I'm not even sure what an R-rated Ghostbusters movie would be like. The original film was rated PG, but they managed to get away with a lot of dirty jokes. PG-13 films didn't exist when the movie came out. I'm sure the kids didn't know what was going on when that ghost unzipped Ray's pants and gave him a blow job.

I'm curious to see what Feig actually does with this franchise. It's going to be really hard to outdo the original though. I'm pretty confident that it won't, but maybe it will at least provide some fun entertainment and give hardcore Ghostbusters fans something to complain about.

The Dark Knight Meets The Marvel Knights in Fan Art

Deviant Art user Meador created this beautiful, spectacular piece of fan art called “The Dark Knight Meets The Marvel Knights.” It was done in watercolors, and it features Batman, Daredevil, Black Panther, Spider-Man, and Punisher. The result is kind of badass. This is such a great team-up of heroes, and I imagine they are jumping into some heavy action on the streets of New York.

AGENT CARTER Featurette - "Peggy Goes Undercover"

Marvel has released a new behind-the-scenes featurette for their upcoming series Agent Carter. In it, Hayley Atwell discusses her character and what it's like for her to live a double life as a secret agent.

"She has an intelligence about her and a skill set that's very impressive, and yet we get to see the emotional and psychological cost of her character, of someone who's having to live a double life."

I have high hopes for this series, and I think that it will deliver the goods. Everything that I've seen and heard about it has been pretty darn cool.

It's 1946 and peace has dealt Agent Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) a serious blow as she finds herself marginalized when the men return home from fighting abroad. Working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), Peggy finds herself stuck doing administrative work when she would rather be back out in the field, putting her vast skills into play and taking down the bad guys. But she is also trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life, Steve Rogers – a.k.a. Captain America. When old acquaintance Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper, "Captain America: The First Avenger”) finds himself being framed for unleashing his deadliest weapons to anyone willing to pony up the cash, he contacts Peggy -- the only person he can trust -- to track down those responsible, dispose of the weapons and clear his name. He empowers his butler, Edwin Jarvis (James D'Arcy), to be at her beck and call when needed to help assist her as she investigates and tracks down those responsible for selling these weapons of mass destruction. If caught going on these secret missions for Stark, Peggy could be targeted as a traitor and spend the rest of her days in prison – or worse.

Agent Carter's two-hour series premiere kicks off on January 6th at 8 pm ET on ABC. Thanks to People for the heads up.

Universal's ATTACK ON TITAN Ride Looks Insanely Unsettling!

Universal Studios Japan has released a video preview of their new Attack on Titan ride, and it looks radically insane! The Japanese always get the cool stuff. I seriously doubt we'll ever get to have anything like this here in the States. I'd love to experience this unsettling ride, but unfortunately, I won't be going to Japan anytime soon.

The ride is called “Attack on Titan The Real,” and it "recreates the post-apocalyptic world of Hajime Isayama’s hit fantasy manga, where remorseless, flesh-eating giants have all but wiped out humanity, whose remnants are forced to live within a country surrounded by three enormous walls."

It's part of an event called  “Universal Cool Japan,” and it runs from January 23th to May 10th at the Osaka theme park. The event also includes rides for Monster HunterEvangelion, and Resident Evil. I've included videos for those as well.

Thanks to CBR for the heads up!

Emily Blunt on Captain Marvel and the Two Marvel Roles She Turned Down

emily-blunt-on-captain-marvel-and-the-two-marvel-roles-she-turned-down

Emily Blunt has had two chances so far to play a Marvel character, but she turned both of them down. The first role was Black Widow, which she had to turn down because she was contractually obligated to star in another movie at 20th Century Fox. That movie was the horrendous Gulliver's Travel with Jack Black. Personally, I think she would have made an amazing Black Widow. Don't get me wrong! Scarlett Johansson is great as Black Widow, and she owns the part, but after seeing Blunt kick-ass in Edge of Tomorrow... damn, I could see her being a great Black Widow, as well. The other role that she walked away from was Peggy Carter.

The two roles came up in a conversation with Vulture, when they asked if she had been offered the chance to play Captain Marvel, to which she replied:

“No one's offered me that officially, so it's... very unofficial. I think it's fan-casting, which is always very nice. But nothing official has been offered, for sure. If I get it, thank Meryl [Streep] for it!”

I'd love to see her in the role of Captain Marvel. The studio obviously wants to bring her into their cinematic universe. There's always a chance that Captain Marvel could be their chance. She then talked about why she turned down the first two offers from Marvel, saying,

“It was never the right time, really, and it just didn't work out scheduling-wise with those two. It's always a difficult thing to talk about, because it's not fair to the actresses who ended up playing them, you know? It just wasn't the right time.”

Even if Blunt doesn't play Captain Marvel, I'm sure one day she will be introduced as a character in the MCU. The question is, who will it be?!

Vision and Ultron's Origins Revealed in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Promo Art

$
0
0

The Disney marketing machine is ramping up the promotional material for Avengers: Age of Ultron and some of it has found its way onto Reddit. In one image we get a really sharp look at Vision (Paul Bettany) coming out of a wall and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) striking a pose. More interesting than the images is the text bios for Vision and Ultron, which reveal their origins.

Spoiler Alert — If you don't want to know, don't go any further.

Vision Biography:

"Programmed by the combined geniuses of Tony Stark & Bruce Banner, and imparted with the ability to fly, project intense energy beams and change the density of his form, the Vision has proved himself a worthy hero, aiding the Avengers in their struggle against the evil A.I. Ultron"

This info seems to contradict comic canon in which Ultron creates The Vision. If I'm not mistaken, I believe Joss Whedon also said the Vision origin sticks close to comic canon. Mark Ruffalo recently said Banner has been helping Stark with something. We all assumed it was Ultron when Rufallo added that the experiment went wrong. It would be interesting if what went wrong resulted in Vision.

Ultron Biography:

"First discovered as a simple computer program hidden among the ruins of the Chitauri invasion of New York, the being known as Ultron soon completed it's development into a sophisticated artifical intelligence after some experimentation by Tony Stark. Ultron's first shocking ultimatum upon gaining consciousness was to declare the human race its enemy. Setting out to exterminate all life on the planet, the unstable and emotional Ultron seeks to upgrade its mechanical body to an ultimate, unstoppable form. With an army of robotic drones and the ability to enter and corrupt any computer network, Ultron will stop at nothing to see humanity wiped out."

Ultron starts out as a Chitauri program, interesting. In a LEGO set, Ultron drones are stealing Loki's scepter, which makes me believe that the scepter initiates a hidden part of Ultron's programing. Promo material often contains only shades of truth in order to protect the real plot, but supported by other bits that have leaked out, this does give us a somewhat clearer picture.

Cyber Noir Short Film - ARLO: THE ASSASSIN

With a $300 dollar budget and some imagination, writer and director Dustin Black impressively pulled off something pretty cool with his cyber noir short film "Arlo: The Assassin." This is a decent and entertaining short that I think a lot of you will enjoy. It's a little rough around the edges, but it still has a fun concept and style. Here's a brief synopsis:

Set in 2053, Arlo: The Assassin is an 80's style, lo-fi, cyberpunk action short where the streets are rough and the stakes are high. Arlo has been given his latest mark, The Grinning Girl - and she's not going down without a fight.

Artist TheGameWorld turned his Benedict Cumberbatch portrait art into a fan's take on what he might look like as Doctor Strange. This styling really lines up with the classic comic styling. I don't think he's going to have all that white and gray hair in the movie, but he's very likely to sport the signature facial hair.

Concept Art for Gore Verbinski's Abandoned BIOSHOCK Film

Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski worked with Universal Pictures for years trying to get a feature film adaptation of the hit video game Bioshock into production. They just couldn't seem to make it work due to a variety of reasons, but one of the main ones was budget issues.

Verbinski was looking to make a $200 million R-rated film, and the studio wanted him to make it for $80 million. The two just couldn't come to an agreement, so the director walked away. He stayed on as a producer for awhile after they brought in Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) to take on the challenge, but then Bioshock creator Ken Levine stepped in to stop to the production because he felt that Fresnadillo wasn't a good fit for the film.

Thanks to Blastr, we've got some cool concept art that was done for the film while Verbinski was developing it. It was created by Kasra Farahani, who has worked on films such as Thor and Star Trek Into Darkness.

The video game has such a cool concept, and I loved the dark atmosphere and vibe of it. You get a taste of that in this concept art. I would have loved to see Verbinski's vision of this game brought to life, but at this point it doesn't seem like it will ever happen.

10 Fun Facts about SPACEBALLS

10-fun-facts-about-spaceballs

All the hype about Star Wars: The Force Awakens inspired to rewatch Spaceballs. More specifically, I was  inspired by a great mashup trailer that we posted about a month ago. It had been a few years since I last saw the movie, but it was just as hilarious as I remembered. There are so many great things in that movie that I had completely forgotten about. I’m glad that I watched it again. If you haven’t seen it in awhile yourself, I suggest you throw it on for some good laughs. I thought this would be just as good a time as any to do a fun facts list for the movie, and below you’ll find ten interesting things that you may or may not already know about it. One thing is for sure, I seriously miss seeing Rick Moranis in movies. That guy was hilarious. I wish he was still acting.

  • The scene where Dark Helmet, played by Moranis, is playing with his dolls was not in the script. Director Mel Brooks came up with the idea on the set, and Moranis ended up improvising the entire scene.
  • The Millennium Falcon from Star Wars: A New Hope appears in the film during a shot of the Space Diner. It’s parked with several other space vehicles.
Spaceballs-falcon
  • Brooks said that Moranis had the idea of Dark Helmet's voice changing whenever his face was covered.
  • According to Brooks, Michael Winslow saved the production $1000 by doing all the sound effects that he made during his extremely funny scene in the film.
  • Brooks personally obtained George Lucas' full permission to make the parody with any and all things Star Wars related. It came with one condition, though: “That absolutely no merchandise of any kind be produced from the film. This is the reason why all Yogurt and the dinks do is merchandising (it's also why none of the merchandise seen is the film was ever mass produced or publicly sold in any way).”
  • A full bulldog facemask was originally made for the character of Barf, who was played by John Candy. Brooks didn’t like it and quipped that “if they were going to hide John Candy behind a mask, he might as well hire someone else for half the price.” The next thing they tried was a nose and upper lip piece, which Candy approved of, but again, Brooks didn’t. They finally settled on the look that we saw in the film, which made so much more sense than a full mask. It included animatronic ears that were connected to a hairpiece, a small nose application, and a patch over one eye just like the dog from the 'Our Gang' shorts. It was controlled by three people. Candy worked the tail and two assistants controlled the ears.
  • The original title for the film was Planet Moon. The replaced it with Spaceballs when they heard about a British science fiction spoof called Morons from Outer Space. They wanted “Space” in the title and while they were trying to figure out a word to go with “Space” Brooks spilled a drink and shouted "Balls!" Thus Spaceballs was born. After they had the title down, they came up with the idea that the Spaceballs villains would wear ball shaped helmets.
  • The novelization of Spaceballs was written by Goosebumps author R.L. Stine.
  • Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks were also considered for the role of Captain Lone Starr.
  • John Hurt parodies his own role in the 1979 classic sci-fi horror film Alien in the space diner scene. The alien that pops out of his chest and starts dancing and singing “Hello, My Baby” with the hat and cane is a parody of the animated Michigan J, Frog Looney Tunes skit. Lucas' Industrial Light and Magic constructed the alien puppet.

Top 20 Most Pirated Movies in 2014

top-20-most-pirated-movies-in-2014

The sad truth is Hollywood will never be able to stop pirated films. As long as the internet exists it’s going to happen. I personally prefer to see movies in the movie theater in a top quality atmosphere, because that’s just how I roll. I’m not big on watching low quality versions of films on a computer screen. With the rising costs at the movies, though, I can understand why some people would opt to find it online and watch it for free. I’m not condoning it because it’s not right, but I do get why people do it.

I’ve got a list of the top 20 films that were pirated in 2014, and I’m kind of shocked to see that Guardians of the Galaxy isn’t on the list. Seems like people actually went out of their way to get the movie theater experience with that one. Who knows if that will hold through 2015 though. A lot of the films that made the list are actually films from 2013. Disney’s Frozen came in at #2 and Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street landed the #1 spot.

Check out the full list below, which includes the millions of times that they were downloaded:

20. Lone Survivor - 19.13

19. Captain Phillips - 19.82

18. Edge of Tomorrow - 20.3

17. Divergent - 20.31

16. Noah - 20.33

At GeekTyrant there are no writing assignments. Everything written was picked by the person who wrote it. We never talk about what posts could generate more traffic. Writers/Editors only post things we think are cool, which is why it seems like we think that "everything is awesome." Guiding all this curated love are GeekTyrant's core guiding principles (which you should read if you aren't familiar). Those values inform how we word titles, the images we use for social and thumbnails, what widgets we'll place on the site, and even the color of links.

2015 is going to be a big year for GeekTyrant, with an increased focus on original content and original videos. It's taken us a longtime to be able to have a staff large enough to be able to cover the news and have the time to create unique stuff. Some of these original posts take days or even a full week to write. We are hoping that we can grow GeekTyrant by breaking out of the news echo chamber.

So while looking forward, it's good to reflect on past successes. The following is a list of GeekTyrant's 14 most popular posts of 2014. Without exception, all 14 went viral, with a few of them hitting the front page of Reddit. Some interesting patterns emerged, like six posts are about Disney, four are about superheroes, three are about Disney Princesses, and two are about Wolverine. What's on this list won't guide what we write next year but it's always interesting to see what you geeks find cool and worth sharing.

Chris Evans Superises Child Captain America Fan Who's Battling Cancer

I love seeing uplifting stories like this. During the holidays, actor Chris Evans took time out of his busy schedule to visit 9-year-old Kenny Botting, who is a huge Captain America fan that is battling brain cancer at Christopher's Haven in Boston.

During his visit Evans gave Kenny some gifts, took a few photos, signed some autographs, and played with him. Kenny even got to tie the actor down to a chair. Evans is a big supporter of Christopher's Haven, which "provides a home away from home for kids and their families while they battle cancer." During a brief interview with CBS Boston, Evans said:

"It’s their strength that gives me strength that gives people like me strength. Any way you can bring a smile and give positive words of reinforcement and encouragement, it's worth it."

I've been a fan of Evans for a long time, and stuff like this makes me like him even more. What an awesome guy. Kenny must have felt like one of the luckiest kids in the world to have met one of his heroes. Before Evans, left Kenny told him,

"I am more than happy. I just want to say thank you, thanks for coming."

Sylvester Stallone to Shoot RAMBO: LAST BLOOD After CREED

If you're wondering what's going on with Sylvester Stallone's fifth Rambo movie, you might be happy to know that he still plans on making it. A few months ago it was revealed that the film would be called Rambo: Last Blood, and that he might be directing it. In a couple of recent tweets talking about his upcoming projects, the actor said,

"Going to Philly to start the film CREED.... What a great idea"
"Doing Scarpa based on Gangster Greg Scarpa after LAST BLOOD RAMBO..."

I don't know if this means the title of the film will actually Last Blood: Rambo, but it does confirm that Last Blood is the sub-title for the movie. Seems fitting for a franchise that began with First Blood. Stallone doesn't say when exactly he is planning to shoot Rambo, but it obviously won't happen until after he's finished with his Rocky spinoff film, Creed.

Stallone has been training for Rambo 5 since August, and it sounds like he's ready to kick some ass and kill hundreds of bad guys. Once he's done with that, he'll take on Brad Furman‘s Scarpa, which was written by Goodfellas and Casino screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi.

Scarpa "tells the story of Gregory Scarpa, a former capo and hit man for the Colombo crime family known as the Grim Reaper. Scarpa boasted of killing 50 people and eventually turned FBI informant during his tenure in the mob. Subsequently, Scarpa contracted HIV and died from AIDS-related complications in 1994.”

That sounds like an interesting project, but I'm definitely more excited about seeing the last chapter in the Rambo franchise.

Captain America: The First Avenger director Joe Johnston got his start in the entertainment business as a concept artist and character designer for Lucasfilm. I'm sure many of you already know that he’s credited with designing the look of Boba Fett and did a lot of other cool work on the original Star Wars films. Here is another awesome piece of concept art from him that I’ve never seen before. It’s a design of the Ark of the Covenant from Steven Spielberg’s 1981 classic The Raiders of the Lost Ark, and as you can see, it’s a beautiful visualization.

AMC recently aired a new promo trailer for the the mid-season premiere of Season 5 of The Walking Dead. Thanks to The Walking Dead and More 2, that trailer is available for you to watch online. It includes a little bit of new footage from the last half of the season.

The series is set to return on February 8th, 2015, and the show has already been renewed for a sixth season, which is set to begin in the fall of 2015. This is one of those shows that is going to go for a very long time. Over time its audience has just gotten bigger and bigger over the years. I wonder how long it can keep growing.

As long as the series continues to tell great stories and keep me interested, I'll keep watching. I wonder what major character(s) they will kill off by the time Season 5 comes to an end.

Fascinating Video on Matte Paintings in STAR WARS and INDIANA JONES

Before computers came around to make filmmakers' lives a little easier, production artists used to create paintings that would fill the backgrounds of the movies for filmmakers. These days all of that stuff can be placed in digitally during the post-production process, but when films like Star Wars and Indiana Jones were made, this is how they did things, along with using models and other practical effects.

Thanks to /Film I've come across a set of behind-the-scenes videos from BBC's Horizon that I've never seen before. They are from 1985, and they show us how the Industrial Light and Magic Special Effects team created certain aspects of films such as Return of the Jedi, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

These videos contain some seriously fascinating stuff that I know a lot of you will enjoy seeing. Some of you might even be surprised by some of the stuff presented here. The artwork created for these films was absolutely stunning.

Sam Raimi Admits to Messing Up with SPIDER-MAN 3, Calls It "Awful"

Last month I watched Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 for the first time since it was released in theaters. The movie just left such a bad taste in my mouth, I was in not rush to see it again. I have to say, though, after the next time I saw it it wasn't really as bad as I remember. In fact, the first half of the movie was pretty damn awesome. There were some really fun elements, and it wasn't until Peter Parker went all emo that the movie started to lose me. It really could have been a much better film than what it turned out to be, and Raimi knows it.

In a recent interview with the Nerdist podcast, Raimi had a long discussion about everything that went wrong with Spider-Man 3. He points out many of the mistakes that he made with it, but he seemed to have a pretty good sense of humor about it.

The Spider-Man 3 discussion starts around the 1:04 mark, and Raimi begins by saying,

"Working in that big budget arena, with so much at stake, with much beloved characters that Stan Lee created, people really hold them so dear to them that you don't want to mess up and I messed up with that third Spider-Man. People hated me for years. They still hate me for it.

"... It's a movie that just didn't work very well. I tried to make it work, but I didn't really believe in all the characters, and so that can't be hidden from people who loved Spider-Man. If the director doesn't love something, it's wrong of them to make it when so many other people love it."

Even though the movie wasn't the best it could have been, I wasn't one of the guys that hated on Raimi. That guy has been and always will be one of my favorite filmmakers. He just makes really fun flicks. As for the characters he didn't believe in, I assume he's talking about Venom, who was added at the studio's request. It sounds to me like Raimi pretty much checked out of the third film, as he went into it not loving what he was getting himself into.

The director then talks about topping the second Spider-Man film, which was amazing, explaining:

"I think [raising the stakes] was the thinking going into it, and I think that's what doomed us. I should've just stuck with the characters and the relationships and progressed them to the next step and not tried to top the bar. I think that was my mistake."

I do respect the fact that Raimi is owning up to his role in the issues the film has. The thing is, you learn from your mistakes and move forward. If a person doesn't admit that he made a mistake, how are they supposed to change and do better? He went on to humorously admit that the movie was awful in the following exchange with Chris Hardwick:

Raimi: Directors don't like to talk about their bad films.

Hardwick: I don't think that 'bad' is the right word.

Raimi: Awful.

The whole interview is worth listening to, so you should check it out if you get a chance. I especially enjoyed the part where he talks about what Bruce Campbell was like when he was younger.

What do you think about Raimi's statements about his mistakes with Spider-Man 3?
