the-worst-movies-of-2014-review-themselves-video-supercut

Every year Hollywood releases a bunch of movies that are absolutely awful. There are a lot of films that I skipped out on this year because of how bad they looked. I've got a video here for you to watch that features several of the this worst movies according to Yahoo. I can't say that I fully agree with the video, as I really liked A Million Ways to Die in the West and The Giver, but it is fun to watch all of these movies give a bad review of themselves. After you watch the video, let us know what the worst films you've seen this year are.

Final Red-Band Trailer for THE INTERVIEW

I assume many of you have already watched Seth Rogen and James Franco's The Interview. I haven't had a chance to watch it for myself yet, but I plan to very soon. The reviews for the film have been mixed, with a majority of them saying that it wasn't worth all of the drama surrounding it. Sony Pictures has released a funny final red-band trailer for the movie for you to enjoy. It's definitely not safe for work.

"The action-comedy follows Dave Skylark (Franco) and his producer Aaron Rapoport (Rogen), who run the popular celebrity tabloid TV show “Skylark Tonight.” When they discover that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is a fan of the show, they land an interview with him in an attempt to legitimize themselves as journalists. As Dave and Aaron prepare to travel to Pyongyang, their plans change when the CIA recruits them, perhaps the most unlikely candidates, to ‘take out’ Kim Jong-un."

The film is currently playing in 331 theaters and is also available to rent and purchase online in various platforms. You can get all of the information on that here. If you've already seen the film, let us know what you thought of it!

ABC has released a new TV spot for Marvel's Agent Carter, which stars Hayley Atwell as a secret agent for S.H.I.E.L.D. and a one woman army. The promo is basically welcoming her to the network's list of powerful female characters that the ABC network has introduced to us over the years, such as Sydney Bristow and Olivia Pope.

The first two episodes that will make up the 2-hour series premiere on January 6th, 2015 are described as follows:

In the episode "Now is Not the End," Peggy is contacted by old acquaintance Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper, Marvel's "Captain America: The First Avenger") when he is framed for unleashing his deadliest weapons and can trust no one else. To help Peggy clear Stark's name, he insists his butler, Edwin Jarvis, be at her beck and call--whether she likes it or not. But the risk is great: If caught, Agent Carter could be targeted as a traitor and spend the rest of her days in prison...or worse.

In the episode "Bridge and Tunnel," Howard Stark's deadliest weapon has fallen into enemy hands, and only Agent Carter can recover it. But can she do so before her undercover mission is discovered by SSR Chief Dooley and Agent Thompson?

Disney Releases "Countdown to Midnight" Trailer for CINDERELLA

Since it's New Year's Eve, Disney has released a "Countdown to Midnight" sneak peek for their live-action adaptation of Cinderella. This is apparently a worldwide promotion leading to a trailer that will be released at midnight. Since the new year has already arrived in Australia, we have a new minute long trailer for you to watch. I'm not sure if this will be different from what we end up seeing in the states or other parts of the world, but I'll be keeping an eye out. You can watch the trailer and the sneak peek teaser below.

The story of "Cinderella" follows the fortunes of young Ella (Lily James) whose merchant father remarries following the death of her mother. Eager to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and her daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drisella (Sophie McShera) into the family home. But, when Ella's father unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor her mother's dying words and to "have courage and be kind." She will not give in to despair nor despise those who mistreat her. And then there is the dashing stranger she meets in the woods. Unaware that he is really a prince, not merely an apprentice at the Palace, Ella finally feels she has met a kindred soul. It appears her fortunes may be about to change when the Palace sends out an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball, raising Ella's hopes of once again encountering the charming Kit (Richard Madden). Alas, her stepmother forbids her to attend and callously rips apart her dress. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand, and a kindly beggar woman (Helena Bonham-Carter) steps forward and -- armed with a pumpkin and a few mice -- changes Cinderella's life forever.

The movie is set to be released on March 26th, 2015.

To help ring in the new year, Hot Toys has revealed their Guardians of the Galaxy Thanos collectible action figure. It looks pretty amazing and comes with the caption: "A New Age Begins Now." I'm looking forward to seeing this character take shape over the next few years in the Marvel MCU leading up to Avengers: Infinity War

2015 is going to be yet another great year for Marvel with the releases of Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man. I'm sure Hot Toys is going to reveal plenty of new figures for collectors to enjoy as well.

Edgar Wright's hilarious horror comedy Shaun of the Dead has been adapted into a stage play in England. The production, which is being developed by Almost Legal Productions, was given an approval by the director himself. The play even features musical numbers and audience participation! it looks like it could be a fun experience. Here's a description of the play:

Life is going nowhere for Shaun. He spends his life in his local pub, with his best mate Ed, has issues with his Mum and step-dad and things aren’t running too smoothly with his girlfriend Liz. When Liz dumps him, Shaun finally decides to get his life in order. He must win back her heart, repair his relationship with his mum and face up to his responsibilities. Unfortunately, there is a slight problem with the world being taken over by Zombies. For the newly inspired Shaun, this is just another obstacle. In the face of a full scale ZOMBIE EPIDEMIC, armed with a cricket bat and his best mate with a spade, Shaun & Ed go to rescue Liz, her friends, mum and grudgingly his step-dad, and take them to the safest most secure place he knows.
Belief from Simon Pegg and Working Title together with Universal Pictures is about to put Almost Legal Productions on the map. They cut their teeth with several of the most difficult to stage productions. This has enabled ALP to work extensively on adapting one of the most all out zombie UK comedy favourites to stage. With audience participation, goody bags with all the kit required to take part, songs and dances, ALP are set to bring you life after death!

The show apparently premiered in October, but will be making a comeback in the next few months. To promote it they've released a trailer for your viewing enjoyment.

Death Star Fire Pit

$

The construction may not look complete, but this Death Star fire pit it fully operational. It doesn’t have the ability to destroy a planet (which is insignificant next to the power of The Force anyway), but I’m sure it’ll roast the hell out of a marshmallow. The fire pit was constructed out of defective propane tank ends by an 84-year-old metalworker, who gave it to his grandkids as a Christmas present.

It's amazing to think that this man was already well into his forties when the first Star Wars film came out. He's watched multiple generations become obsessed with this sci-fi franchise, and instead of dismissing it as a bunch of 'hooey' (he would totally use that word), he's willing to nurture that love for the films, and is likely a fan himself. If not, he's just one cool grandpa.

Lightsaber Add-Ons Escalate Quickly in Wacky Animated FORCE AWAKENS Parody

The reveal of the crossguard lightsaber was a pretty exciting moment in the teaser for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But if the character Kylo Ren is wielding a lightsaber with three blades, what other add-ons have people been coming up with in the years since the events of the original trilogy? Star Wars Rebels already introduced a practical, yet quite uncivilized, multifunctional lightsaber, and in this animated short from HappyHour, we get to see the once elegant weapon devolve much, much further.

Ben's Top 10 Films of 2014

Hey everyone! After a couple of years away, I'm thrilled to announce that I'm back with the gang at GeekTyrant. This was where I got my start writing about film and television online, and I'm very excited to return to the team, help the site move forward in 2015, and start interacting with this awesome community again.

As you recover from last night's New Year's Eve festivities, I wanted to offer up a list of my favorite films of 2014. Chances are pretty good you've seen a handful of these films, but maybe there are a couple that you haven't seen, and this list may encourage you to check them out to see where they'd rank on your own list. Enjoy!

enemy_1.jpg

10. Enemy

One of the most enigmatic movies in recent memory, Denis Villeneuve's Enemy is a strange, hazy, horrifying, nightmare that has haunted me since I saw it in March. Led by a dual performance from Villeneuve's Prisoners star Jake Gyllenhaal, the film follows a man who discovers his doppelganger and the terrifying consequences that follow their confrontation. Shot in Toronto and bathed in a washed-out yellow color palette, this is far from your average "twin" movie: it's full of bizarre and creepy spider imagery and a palpable sense of dread reminiscent of David Lynch. I'm not even certain I can fully explain exactly what happens in the movie, but it's stuck with me for months after my initial viewing and features one of the most spine-tingling final shots of the past few years.

9. The Raid 2

Gareth Evans' sequel to his martial arts masterpiece The Raid suffers from being a touch too ambitious for its own good, but I'd much rather have a filmmaker deliver a movie that tries too hard than one that doesn't try hard enough. The narrative gets bogged down with double-crosses and gang warfare politics as Evans expands this franchise's universe, but it also includes the most incredible fight choreography I've ever seen. Utilizing inventive handheld camera techniques (like physically passing a camera through a moving car window and out the other side in one long continuous shot) to showcase the bone-crunching awesomeness of star Iko Uwais, Evans once again proves that he's one of the best directors working in action cinema today.

8. Edge of Tomorrow

I wasn't thrilled to go into another Tom Cruise sci-fi film so soon after being disappointed by his last effort in that genre (Oblivion). But a wonderful performance by Cruise, a star-making turn by Emily Blunt, and a fun script filtered through the vision of director Doug Liman resulted in one of the most surprisingly fun times at the theater I had all year. This is a terrific movie, full of action and heart, but it failed to catch on with audiences and ended up being a financial disappointment. That's OK, though: most cult classics start out that way, and Edge of Tomorrow is destined to become a sci-fi favorite that stands the test of time.

7. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

From the opening shot - an extreme close-up of Caesar's eyes - filmmaker Matt Reeves essentially dares the audience to find a flaw in his team's visual effects. But the movie is so strong that none can be found, and the performance capture work by star Andy Serkis shines even brighter than in the surprisingly great Rise of the Planet of the Apes. This sequel has a lot more going on, with themes of fatherhood and community playing out in dual storylines between the ape characters and the human ones. While stars Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, and Keri Russell are OK in the movie, this movie really belongs to the apes, with Serkis' Caesar becoming a more fleshed out leader and Toby Kebbell's work as Koba standing out as a highlight. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was among the few movies released in 2014 that proved studios can still make intelligent, moving summer features...which feels like a downright radical notion when you look at the majority of its contemporaries.

6. The LEGO Movie

Against all odds, writer/directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller somehow took yet another property that sounded like an absolutely horrible idea and turned it into one of the year's best movies. They've quickly become some of my favorite filmmakers, and even though The LEGO Movie is animated, you can still feel their kinetic style and wonderful sense of heart flowing through every frame. It's an encouraging tribute to originality in the face of overwhelming conformity, full of fun visual gags, great cameos, and truly smart writing. Oh, and did I mention it's hilarious?

5. Selma

It's simple: there wasn't a more timely or relevant movie in 2014 than Selma. David Oyelowo's towering portrayal of Martin Luther King, Jr. isn't your typical biased biopic schmaltz - this is a movie that shows a leader of a social movement, warts and all, and how he inspired those around him to enact measurable change in our country at a time of extreme hardship. Sounds like something all Americans should see right now, doesn't it?

4. Nightcrawler

A twisted look at the American Dream as seen through the eyes of a total sociopath, Dan Gilroy's Nightcrawler is such a tremendous film that it's hard to believe it's his directorial debut. Amid gorgeous cinematography of Los Angeles at night, Jake Gyllenhaal delivers one of the year's best performances as Lou Bloom, a scheming, relentless capitalist who will rise to the top of his field regardless of the human lives he leaves in his wake. This isn't a satire of local news: it's a warning against the "do whatever it takes" mentality that arises out of tough economic times, with Gilroy seemingly pleading with us to retain our humanity and not become the monster he and Gyllenhaal created to lead this film.

3. Gone Girl

David Fincher returns with a sexy, fast-paced, twisty thriller packed with shocking reveals and WTF moments. Writer Gillian Flynn adapted the screenplay from her own mega-hit novel, and leads Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck rise to the challenge of delivering her blistering dialogue and pulling off some diabolical reversals and betrayals as the curtain is slowly pulled back to reveal their characters' true motives. Gone Girl is a spellbinding nail-biter of a film, and it's easily one of the most purely entertaining things Fincher has ever directed.

2. Guardians of the Galaxy

Who could have predicted that Marvel's most bizarre movie to date would also become the highest-grossing domestic release of 2014? James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy is a rare instance in which a film is actually worthy of its massive box office success (unlike, say, the piece of garbage that is Transformers: Age of Extinction). This is my favorite Marvel film so far, and the one that really put Chris Pratt on the map as a legitimate movie star. But even though I loved Star-Lord in the movie, it wasn't just Pratt that carried the project on his shoulders: this is a team-up movie through and through, and the fantastic ensemble cast settled into their roles so well that by the end it feels like you're watching a group of old friends hang out and go on adventures through space. Seeing this film was the most fun I had in a theater all year, and I can't wait to revisit this film again and again.

1. Whiplash

What a movie. A searing portrayal of the sacrifice, dedication, and hard work it takes to become a legend, Damien Chazelle's Whiplash is an astonishing piece of filmmaking that shot straight to the top of my "favorite movies of the year" list the moment I walked out of the theater. J.K. Simmons is breathtakingly good as the scariest conductor you've ever seen, and Miles Teller pours his heart and soul into his role of a young drummer desperate to achieve greatness. It's a shame more people haven't seen Whiplash (it rolled out across the country in waves, but didn't ever get the promotional push I feel it deserved), because it's quickly become one of my favorite movies of all time.

Agree? Disagree? Let me know what you think of these picks, and I hope you all have an excellent 2015!

The 5 Biggest Movie Disappointments of 2014

$
0
0

There were some outstanding films released in 2014, and many of them lived up to or surpassed expectations. But there were also a handful of movies that had an incredible amount of hype around them that failed to leave a lasting impression. In no particular order, here are my five biggest movie disappointments of the last year.

Veronica Mars

I never watched Veronica Mars when it was originally on the air, but I caught up with the series on DVD and loved it (yes, even the third season). After creator Rob Thomas' Kickstarter campaign became a huge success, I was excited to see the character's adventures continue. But the final product simply didn't have the same spark that the TV series had. The always-charming Kristen Bell can still embody the role of Veronica, and it seems like everyone involved with the project had good intentions, but the end result just felt like a piece of fan fiction that never fully came together. All of the old characters you know and love from the show got their moment in the spotlight, but I think that very aspect is the thing that makes the movie feel more like fan service than an actual organic story in the Veronica Mars universe.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

Almost ten years after the first Sin City redefined what was possible with digital green screen filmmaking, the sequel finally hit theaters — unfortunately, it was probably about five or six years too late. And even more unfortunately, the movie wasn't worth the wait. Aside from Eva Green's captivating performance as the titular femme fatale, there really isn't anything worthwhile happening here. It's a retread of a lot of the same tough-guy noir stuff we've seen before, but the freshness of the black-and-white cinematography punctuated by snatches of color has completely worn off; this movie can't coast on style alone, and the narrative is depressingly average. Even with the addition of some new faces (like Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez can't create anything as cutting edge and vibrant as the original, and the film sinks under the weight of its mind-numbingly repetitive action sequences.

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit

I'm a big Chris Pine fan, and I like Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan character well enough from the multiple films that featured that character back in the '90s. Shadow Recruit was supposed to be a big comeback for the character, but this is such a lifeless movie that I'm guessing the series won't be moving forward again with this creative team any time soon. Pine isn't given anything to work with here, because the script (by Adam Cozad and David Koepp) treats Jack Ryan like a blank slate, never giving him any compelling characteristics whatsoever. Keira Knightley is godawful as Ryan's fiancee, and the listless dialogue and laughable decisions from many of the major players (including Kevin Costner) helped to ensure that this would be a huge disappointment.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1

I thought the first Hunger Games film was OK, and Catching Fire was a big improvement. I was a little hesitant about Lionsgate splitting the final book into two films, but before seeing Mockingjay - Part 1, I'd heard early word that it worked well by itself and didn't necessarily feel like an Act 1 to a larger story. It turns out those early reports were completely wrong, because Mockingjay - Part 1 doesn't feel like a self-contained installment in this franchise in the least: it's very clearly the first part of a larger tale, and based on how little actually happens in this movie, it's obvious that the studio made this decision purely for financial reasons. Katniss Everdeen becomes a mouthpiece for the resistance against President Snow's Capitol forces, and... that's about it. This was an excruciatingly boring film in which most of the running time is spent following people in an underground bunker sitting around talking about strategy. Dull, inert, and incomplete, Mockingjay - Part 1 doesn't deserve the classification of a full movie.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

To me, it seemed as if Peter Jackson was hate-directing certain sections of this third film in his Hobbit trilogy. If you've been following movie news for a while, you probably know that he had no plans to direct any of these films in the first place. Guillermo del Toro was originally slated to get behind the camera, but he left the project (after spending two years developing it) when the studio wouldn't give it a green light. Ultimately, Jackson stepped in and the financing was straightened out, and the planned two films were soon expanded into three. To anyone who read and loved Tolkien's original book, the problems with The Battle of the Five Armies were obvious from the start: The Hobbit is a one-movie story stretched thin over three films just to meet studio demands, and Battle may be the worst of the trilogy. There's action on a huge scale, but none of it has the same weight and reality that the original Lord of the Rings trilogy possessed since most of the orcs and creatures were created digitally this time around. The Hobbit is supposed to be Bilbo's story, but instead this trilogy is primarily about Thorin (Richard Armitage), a character I honestly couldn't care less about. I understand the concept of taking creative licenses with adaptations, but killing off some of the main characters for no reason (especially when the writers specifically created a character, Evangeline Lilly's Tauriel, who could have easily served that same narrative function), inexplicably shifting the tone (Gandalf smoking a pipe for laughs with Bilbo seconds after Bilbo's friend dies in his arms, for instance), and including a ton of eyeroll-worthy action movie cliches are among this film's worst offenses. These movies could have been special, but instead they tarnished the legacy of one of cinema's greatest trilogies.

Neill Blomkamp Was Developing an ALIEN Film and Here's Some Concept Art!

Director Neill Blomkamp, who has brought us films such as District 9 and Elysium, was developing an Alien film, but has apparently scrapped work on the project. It would have been part of the same franchise from Ridley Scott and James Cameron, and we have some concept art to share with you that shows how cool it would have looked.

Blomkamp revealed the news himself on his Instagram page along with several illustrations that were done for it. I've included the notes from the director that came along with each piece of art. The first one you see above came with the following caption:

"Was working on this. Don't think I am anymore. Love it though.  #alien #xenomorph"

He also posted the following comments on Twitter:

"Ps this has nothing to do with the studio. I just feel like I might do something else instead. In which case why not show some work-"
"They didn't really even know I was working on it ha"

They do now, and who knows where it will lead? I love the piece that shows Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) alongside  an older Corporal Dwayne Hicks (Michael Biehn). Hicks was one of the main badass characters in Cameron's Aliens. At the end of the film he, Newt, Ripley, and Bishop go into hypersleep for a long journey back home. Unfortunately, Hicks and Newt never made it to Alien 3. It seems Blomkamp's version would have discarded what happened in Alien 3 and would have been more of a direct sequel to Aliens, which is great!

I'd love to get some more information on what the story of this film would have entailed. I hope something does actually end up happening with this project somewhere down the line. I'd much rather see this than Prometheus 2.

Marvel Studios has released a promo video announcing that a new trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron will debut on January 12th, 2015. It's supposed to premiere during the first College Football Playoff National Championship game at 8:30 pm EST. Make sure to check back here that day, because we'll get it posted for you as soon as it's released. I imagine this new trailer will include some new footage from the film. Hopefully it will at least give us a little tease of Vision in action.

When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to The Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure.

Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, James Spader, Cobie Smulders, Thomas Kretschmann, Paul Bettany, and Stellan Skarsgard.

The Joss Whedon-directed film will debut in theaters on May 1st, 2015.

Mike Relm is back with a new movie musical remix, and this time he has taken on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy! Like the rest of the video remixes he has done, it combines many pieces of sound, dialogue, and video images from the film to create this entertaining musical experience. Director James Gunn liked it so much that he shared it on his social network feeds. Here's a short note from Relm:

"Guardians of the Galaxy. A great movie with a ridiculous soundtrack. As soon as I saw this film, I wanted to get my paws on it for a remix. And yes, I am fully aware that Rush's 'Tom Sawyer' was not in the film. I just really like that song."

Disney has released another trailer for Cinderella, called "Midnight Changes Everything." which is different from the "Countdown to Midnight" trailer we posted a couple of days ago. We also have a behind-the-scenes featurette for you to check out called “Legacy.” It includes interviews with the cast and crew along with some new footage.

The film is being directed by Kenneth Branagh (Thor), and one of the main things that I like about what I’ve seen from it is that it looks like a familiar adaptation of the original animated film, unlike the Sleeping Beauty film Maleficent. I also love how beautiful the visuals in the film are turning out to be.

The movie is set to be released on March 26th, 2015, and I hope it lives up to fan expectations.

This Drew Struzan inspired poster art for Star Wars: The Force Awakens was created by DeviantArt artist Rampant Imagination. It features a classic poster design with some familiar faces alongside some of the new characters that we were introduced to in the first teaser trailer for the film. The poster also implements some of the leaked concept art from the film that we’ve seen, most notably the chrome Stormtrooper.

The highly anticipated film stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker, and franchise newcomers John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Lupita Nyong’o, and Max von Sydow.

I'm excited that I can actually say the movie comes out this year! It’s set to be released on December 18th, 2015.
