Classic Arcade Style Mug with Joystick Handle

0
0
classic-arcade-style-mug-with-joystick-handle

I'm not really a mug guy, but this classic arcade inspired mug design is pretty damn cool. As you can see, it features the classic Space Invaders arcade game, but my favorite part is the joystick handle. This is perfect for anyone who enjoys endless cups of coffee power ups.

Sure, we can play our old favorites like Space Invaders on emulators. But there was just something about standing in a room filled with the buzz of neon and sticky floors, inserting a quarter, and playing on a real upright as onlookers gathered 'round. Important difference: joystick instead of a keyboard. That was a time when quarters bought happiness (and frustration). Continue...?

I spent an insane amount of time in my local arcade growing up, and it's kind of sad that those kinds of arcades don't exist anymore. Keep the memories alive by buying one of these mugs over on Think Geek for only $13.

Marvel has released a new extended trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron, and it offers up some more footage from the film that I'm sure you're going to enjoy. The start of the trailer is different and shows us what looks to be the first Ultron attack on Earth's Mightiest Heroes. There's another brief scene later on the features Iron Man charging into battle. There are a few little bits here and there, but those are the main things.

Marvel Studios presents Avengers: Age of Ultron, the epic follow-up to the biggest Super Hero movie of all time. When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to The Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure.

The highly anticipated Joss Whedon-directed film is set to be released on May 1st!

Wicked DAREDEVIL Art by Reynan Sanchez

While we wait to see some footage from Marvel's Daredevil series, here's an awesome piece of dark and gritty art featuring the hero in action. The illustration was created by artist Reynan Sanchez, and he did it just to pay tribute to the character. Daredevil has always been a badass comic character, and I'm looking forward to seeing him in action in this upcoming Netflix series.

Watch the First Teaser for THE DIVERGENT SERIES: INSURGENT

The first official teaser for The Divergent Series: Insurgent is online, and they’re really putting that sequel money to use. Rather than a series of clips, the teaser is a look at an effects heavy action sequence. Alas, it’s all just a dream, and Four is nowhere to be seen (A bummer if you’re maybe like a Four fangirl, which, as a grown ass woman, I definitely am not. That would just be weird.) I wish the trailer gave us a glimpse at some of the new characters and settings, but we still have a long way to go until March 20, 2015, so it’s good they haven't given away the store yet.

The Divergent Series: Insurgent stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller, Naomi Watts, Maggie Q, Octavia Spencer, and Kate Winslet and was directed by Robert Schwentke.

15 1990s Toys You Might Not Remember

15-1990s-toys-you-might-not-remember

During the 1980s I played with and destroyed a lot of my favorite toys. It was during the '90s where I started to take better care of my toys, and I started collecting them. I still have a bunch of action figures from that era that are still in the original packaging. One of my favorite action figure lines from this era was Todd McFalane's Spawn. Those things were freakin' awesome! That's also the time I started collecting the twelve inch G.I. Joe figures. I loved going to the various toys stores to collect those things. A lot of those stores don't even exist anymore. There are a few toys, though, from the '90s that completely slipped my mind, until I was going through some boxes and came across some that sparked some fun memories.

Exosquad

This is one of the toys that I found in a box that sparked this whole list you're about to read. The toys were based on an animated series, and it was basically America's response to Japanese anime. The descriptions of the toys and character played a big role in the Exosquad universe. The toy distributor was Playmates, who also acquired the license to the Robotech figures. A crossover between the two properties were considered, but nothing ever happened with it. I owned a lot of these Exosquad toys, and they were cool, just not as cool as Robotech.

Boglins

These things were disgusting, yet radical. They were rubbery hand puppets that resembled small monsters, goblins, and other creatures. They were inspired by classic '80s horror films, such as Ghoulies, Critters, and Gremlins. The whole point of the toy was to scare other people with them, like your grandma. The promotional slogan for the toys was: "If you take us home, we'll kiss your Aunt Martha, we'll eat your peas, and we hope you know lots of girls."

Each character came with a unique style of packaging that was a cardboard box with a plastic "cage" entrance. They also had unique tails and glow in the dark movable eyes. My brothers and I had fun with these things.

VR Troopers

This was a toyline based on a series that tried to ride off the coattails of the Power Rangers, and it was created by the same people who brought us the Power Rangers. However, it completely bombed. These toys never really got on my radar. All anyone ever really wanted were the real Power Rangers toys anyway. VR Troopers never had a chance.

The Incredible Crash Test Dummies

This set of toys was based off of a PSA! How often does that happen? The figures were modeled after the mannequins used in automobile collision simulations. Each one has two "impact buttons" on their torsos that, when pushed, would launch their limbs from their bodies. When I think about it now, and watch the commercial, these toys come off as being a little twisted. I mean, you have kids constantly crashing the toy cars against things as hard as they can so they can see the figures' limbs explode off their body.

Monster in My Pocket

These feature several classic monsters and creatures that were inspired by religion, mythology, literary fantasy, science fiction, cryptids, and other anomalous phenomena. The property also branched out into trading cards, comic books, books, toys, a board game, a video game, as well as an animated special, music, clothing and more. There are at least 229 monsters in the series. My family owned quite a few of them. I thought they were cool. Of course, my dad wasn't very happy when he steeped on them with his bare feet.

James Bond Jr.

This was also an animated TV Series, but I was never interested in it. I loved James Bond and I enjoyed watching the 007 films while growing up, and that's probably why I thought 17-year-old James Bond Jr. was a joke.

Bucky O'Hare

This toy line was based on the short lived animated series. I think my younger brother had a couple toys from the set, and one of them was of the main character Bucky O'Hare. I wasn't really a big fan of the series, so the toys didn't interest me. For unknown reasons, the toy line was abruptly cancelled right before two new series of action figures could be finished. Apparently there are several photographs online of the unreleased figures.

Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa

I'll be honest, I don't remember these action figures at all. I don't even remember the animated series. It wasn't until I started looking through toys online that I came across it. The toys featured mutated animals in the old west. I don't know how I missed this. There were Halloween costumes, themed candy, fruit snacks, bath products and even lunch boxes and thermoses.

Pooch Patrol

These stuffed dogs allowed kids to decide what mood they wanted their toy to be in. The lips and eyebrows could be adjusted to make them look happy or extremely pissed off. One of my younger brothers had this thing so I have a vague memory of it. Not sure why kids thought this thing was so cool.

Betty Spaghetty

When I was looking through '90s toys there were a couple girl ones that I wasn't familiar with. One of them was this Betty Spaghetty figure that is like a cross between Mr. Potato Head and Bratz dolls. The toy is described as being "stereotypically obsessed with her looks." That's always good for little girls. It came with rubbery hair, which kids could do various hair styles, and it also came with changeable hands, feet, shoes, etc.

2-XL

This was a late '70s, early '80s talking robot that was reintroduced to the world in the '90s. It was the first smart-toy, in that it had a personality, exhibited rudimentary intelligence, memory, game play, and responsiveness. The robot was also the co-host of the game show Pick Your Brain.

Yo-Yo Ball

The Yo-Yo Ball was the perfect representation of the early 1990s. You can easily see the transition from the '80s into the '90s in the commercial below. So many kids had these things, but they were also easily forgotten. What made this Yo-Yo so special is that that you never had to rewind the string. It sure did get tangled and stuck a lot though.

Puppy Surprise

Puppy Surprise always seemed kind of disturbing to me. It was a stuffed dog that gave birth to little stuffed puppies. Is the birthing process really supposed to be fun for kids? Who was the guy in the meeting at Hasbro who said, "Hey! I have an idea! What if we make a stuffed dog that has babies in it that kids can pull out, and then shove back in the womb when they're done playing with them?!" More importantly, who actually saw that as being a good idea? This is just one of those bizarre toys that should never have existed.

Micro Machines ZBots

Most popular toys in the ‘90s were associated with animated TV shows, but not the ZBots. Their main purpose was to promote the Micro Machine brand, which is something I never got into. I always thought the Micro Machines were a silly toy. The only thing they were good for was in the movie Home Alone when Kevin McCallister used them to torture the Wet Bandits.

Hook

I honestly don't remember toys for Steven Spielberg's Hook at all. I have no memory of these action figures and play sets, but they existed. Apparently they were released in very small quantities, and the majority of them were sold overseas due to the line not selling well in the states.

Listen to Billy Boyd's Song for THE HOBBIT - "The Last Goodbye"

A few weeks ago it was announced that Billy Boyd, who played Pippin in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, would be writing and performing a song for The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. The song is called "The Last Goodbye," and Water Tower Music has released a preview for it online for you to hear. The song will play during the closing credits of the film, and as I listen to it now, it's really making me sad. Boyd did a beautiful job with this, and it's a perfectly appropriate song to close out the Middle Earth franchise. Listen to it for yourself — and it's ok to admit if it gets all you hardcore Middle Earth fans a little misty-eyed.

Smosh Games has released a new episode of their Honest Game Trailer series, and this one hilariously focuses on the epic fantasy adventure World of Warcraft. The Honest Trailer team at Screen Junkies teamed up with Smosh to help develop these humous game trailers for you to enjoy. I never got into the multiplayer online role-playing, I just couldn't afford to get sucked into it, and I can easily get sucked in and addicted to things. For those of you who have crossed over into the World of Warcraft I'm sure you'll get a kick out of this.

From the company who never met a game they couldn't postpone, comes a more effective form of teenage abstinence than acne, sex ed, and the catholic church combined, World of Warcraft.

Justin Lin Possibly Directing Multi-part FAST & FURIOUS Finale

Director Justin Lin saved the Fast & Furious franchise, after Fast 6 was ready to move on after helming four films in the series. But because Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass are now working on a new Bourne Identity movie, Lin's Aaron Cross spinoff with Jeremy Renner has been put on pause.

With Universal Studio now focused on its monster cineverse and many of the Fast & Furious cast ready to move on from the franchise, the studio has decided to wrap things up with a two part final chapter. Director of Furious 7, James Wan will be directing The Conjuring 2 next. Deadline is reporting that Lin, now with a gap in his schedule, is being tapped to close out the franchise he rescued. Nine movies is a lot more than people would have thought the franchise was capable of. I have enjoyed all but the second movie and I think it's time to end it.

Comical Animated Short - CURIOUS GEORGE OF THE APES

Curious George finally finds his life's purpose in this amusing animated parody short called "Curious George of the Apes." It comes from FOX's Animation Domination, and it's pretty hilarious. If you couldn't tell from the title, it places George in The Planet of the Apes universe, and he comes to a breaking point where he rises up against his human oppressor: The Man with the Yellow Hat. George just isn't going to take it anymore!

Mel Gibson Is Game for Directing IRON MAN 4

Last month Robert Downey Jr. made an offhanded remark that he would reprise his role in Iron Man 4 if his friend Mel Gibson directed it. Well, as it turns out, Gibson is up for the task! When asked in a recent interview if he would be interested in directing the film, the director/actor said,

"Of course you know. I'm pretty good at directing…I think I got some statues for it…I think I can do it. I think I'm a better director than actor. I hope somebody gives me an argument on that!"

Ok Marvel, it's time to make this happen! This is the Iron Man 4 film that the world deserves. We need to see Downey Jr. and Gibson team up for this movie because it would be pure magic. When Gibson's name was first brought up, a lot of fans seemed to be on board with the idea. Gibson is a great filmmaker, and I could see him doing wonders with an Iron Man movie. Marvel has been great with giving up-and-coming directors a shot at their films. How about giving an extremely talented seasoned director a second chance?

Of course, if an Iron Man 4 happens, we probably won't even see it until Phase 4. You can watch the video interview below thanks to the Daily Mail.

Watch Conan O’Brien's Laughable SONS OF ANARCHY Cold Open

If you missed Conan's amazing Sons of Anarchy show last night, you're in for a treat. The episode included guests such as Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter and stars Charlie Hunnam, Theo Rossi, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, Mark Boone Junior, Drea de Matteo, and Jimmy Smits. This actually may have been the best show Conan O'Brien has done so far. But that might be because I'm also a fan of Sons of Anarchy. One of my favorite parts of the show was the hilarious cold opening that featured O'Brien decked out as a badass biker looking for trouble, and he finds it. O'Brien looks ridiculous in it. This might just be one of the funniest things you see today. I also included an amusing tourist commercial for the fictional town in Sons of Anarchy, Charming, CA, that Conan showed his audience. Enjoy!

Matthew McConaughy Is Open to a STAR WARS Movie Offer

Disney and Lucasfilm plan on making Star Wars movies as long as the fans still demand them. A lot of actors and directors are going to have their shot at helping bring these stories to life, whether it's part of the "Episode" saga or a stand alone film.

In a recent interview with Interstellar star Matthew McConaughy, the actor talked about his love for Star Wars and revealed that his favorite character is Chewbacca. He also says that he would be interested in a role for a Star Wars film if the script were good and the character is right for him. Here's what the actor had to say when asked if he would take on a role in the franchise:

“Sure – there’s not anything that I’m not open to embracing. I want it to be a quality script, I want a quality character. I want to be a little scared of it. I want to have new challenges. I want to do something… find in a character where I can get to a point where I feel like nobody could be doing this but me. I’m going to have an original experience… an original take. That takes work to get to that point, but whatever the genre I’m wide open.”

Wow, his attitude about the movies he stars in has sure changed. Remember back in the day when he was making shitty movies like Surfer Dude, Fool's Gold, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, The Wedding Planner, and Failure to Launch? Who would have thought he would have come to a point like this in his career? Not me! I hated a lot of the movies that he made in the early 2000s. None of those had quality scripts or characters.

As for why Chewie is his favorite Star Wars character, he says,

“King Kong is one of my favourite love stories. I’ve got an affection for the mammalian in all of us. I’m simple – I’ve always got a soft spot for the furry creatures.”

McConaughy has proven himself to be an incredible actor regardless of his stretch of bad movies, and it would be cool to see him take on a role in one of these upcoming Star Wars movies that Lucasfilm is looking to develop. I could see him as some kind of intergalactic anti-hero.

STAR WARS: Budgie Looks and Sounds Like R2-D2

RD-D2 from Star Wars is the kind of robot buddy anyone would love to have. Carli Jeffrey, owner of a bird named Bluey, played just a few YouTube videos of R2-D2 to the family budgie. Bluey now makes cool R2-D2 sounds all day long, so yes, it's driving the family a little crazy.

Jeffrey on Bluey:

We taught Bluey the budgie how to do R2-D2 and now he drives us crazy! He has two other budgies in his cage, and I think he's driving them crazy too!
Bluey was our first budgie and our seven-year old daughter hand-raised him. He has always been a curious bird, he was really intrigued by our voices and the cockatoos we have in our garden - he even copied the noise the crested pigeons make when they take off. We played R2D2 sounds off Youtube to him four or five times and a few days later our daughter came running in saying he was doing R2D2. We were blown away that he picked it up so quickly! The other budgies in his cage started copying him but could only manage a few seconds at a time. Bluey also loves making lazer sounds, the R2D2 scream sound, kissing sounds, and he whispers English jibberish we can only make out a few words.

Mystique and Magneto Relationship to Blossom in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE

Director Bryan Singer and his team are still in this development process of X-Men: Apocalypse, and there's no doubt that things are going to get more interesting. I'm sure you've noticed by now that the three core members of the series have been Xavier, Magneto, and Mystique. According to a report by THR, things are about to get really serious between Magneto and Mystique, which is a relationship that has been toyed with since First Class. The report says,

Apocalypse is being crafted around Lawrence’s Mystique character and Michael Fassbender’s Magneto. A source who has seen the script says Fox will take full advantage of Lawrence and Fassbender’s star power, placing Mystique and Magneto’s romance front and center.

Oh... shit, Xavier isn't going to be happy with that. It's not surprising that they would do this, X-Men has had its fare share of superhero relationship drama in the comics and films already. If they are going to include it in this next film, Mystique and Magneto seem like the obvious choice. As long as they surround that relationship in yet another awesome story, there's nothing to worry about.

The film will center around the mutant villain Apocalypse, who was introduced in the post-credits scene of Days of Future Past. The new film will also be set in the 1980s, and it has also been said that the story will involve Ancient Mutants. Tom Hardy has been rumored for the role of Apocalypse. It has also been reported that Quicksilver will be back for more action. It's even possible that we might just see Channing Tatum as Gambit as well.

X-Men: Apocalypse opens on May 27, 2016.

Intense Rogue Artificial Intelligence Short - I.R.I.S.

We have another astounding sci-fi short film for you to watch from director Hasraf HaZ Dulull. This is this same filmmaker who developed the short films Sync and Project Kronos. This guy is on fire, and I've enjoyed all of the shorts that he has made. His latest project is called "I.R.I.S." It's set in the near future, and deals with a artificial intelligence that goes rouge. Here is a brief plot summary:

Nano tech driven drones are used for reconnaissance missions and social surveillance. These drones are run by IRIS, an advanced A.I system, which soon begins to unleash an attack upon mankind the likes of which we have never seen.

"I.R.I.S." features a great, big idea concept that could easily be adapted into a feature film. The idea is amazingly executed in his short, and it's wildly intense. I think you're going to enjoy this!

ARROW: Katie Cassidy Suits Up as Black Canary

Arrow has taken its time with character Laurel Lance's (Katie Cassidy) transformation into the Black Canary, but in the tenth episode this season we will finally see it. Hopefully Cassidy can pull it off, because so far I'm pretty unconvinced. Caity Lotz as Sara Lance, aka Canary, was genuinely believable in all the many action sequences on the show.

The CW has released photos of Cassidy in her Black Canary costume. It's all black and shows less skin than the Canary costume. There are what can only be described as tactical garters and above the knee strapped boots. The final differentiating touch is black lipstick.

Classic Comic Covers Recreated in LEGO

Comic Bricks, a series of comic book covers recreated in LEGO, was on display at Designer Con in Los Angeles this past weekend. Part of the GeekTyrant team was there at Designer Con, and say that the series was a definite highlight of the convention. Some high quality photos of the LEGO art pieces have made their way online, and they are all really impressive. I’m especially blown away by the interpretations that relied less on Minifigures and veered closer to the flat, 2D backgrounds and elements of those classic original covers. Some of them went the extra mile by adding titles, price tags, issue numbers, and other fun details. Taking something inherently three-dimensional to recreate intricate two-dimensional art is quite a tall task, and the artists didn’t disappoint.

Trailer for Adam Sandler's Magical Shoe Movie THE COBBLER

0

trailer-for-adam-sandlers-magical-shoe-movie-the-cobbler

It looks like Adam Sandler has actually made a decent film worth watching. It's been awhile. We have a trailer for his upcoming film called The Cobbler in which he plays a shoe repairman who just isn't happy with his life, that is until he comes across a magical sewing machine in his shop basement. The shoes that Sandler's character repairs with this machine give him the ability to live in the body of the original owners of the shoes. It may sound silly, and the trailer may come off as a bit odd, but that's what I like about it, and I can see the potential.

The Cobbler is a warm and character-driven comedy that plays to the strengths of Adam Sandler’s and Thomas McCarthy's most commercial successes. Sandler plays a 4th generation shoe-maker who discovers a magical sewing machine in his father’s basement that allows him to transform into other people by wearing their shoes. Similar in theme to Tom Hanks' Big, Trading Places, and 13 Going on 30, The Cobbler provides the perfect vehicle for Sandler to exhibit his endearing and selfless boyish charm, taking him on a voyage of self-discovery and learning the importance of family via the magic of “walking a mile in another man’s shoes.” A journey that results not only in changing himself, but the world around him.

The film was directed by Thaomas McCarthy (The Station AgentWin Win), and it also stars Steve BuscemiDustin Hoffman, and Ellen Barkin. The movie will be released in 2015.

2D Notebook-Style Art That Looks Like 3D Sculptures

A couple of years ago we shared an amazing series of art that comic artist Jim Rugg did on spiral notebook paper using nothing but ballpoint pens. Every piece was packed with an insane amount of detail and depth, as well as a hypnotic amount of color. I hadn’t seen anyone really attempt to create worthwhile art on notebook paper since. That is, until I came across the work of artist João A. Carvalho, who mostly skips the color but adds a whole new level of dimension with his faux notebook paper art. Carvalho uses subtle shading and manipulates blue notebook-style lines to create the illusion that his 2D drawings are popping off the page.

I’m not sure if Carvalho drew wide rule or college rule sized lines. I do know, though, that his teacher is going to be super pissed that he didn’t write his name and date in the upper right hand corner. He also didn’t show his work, so the teacher might also think he just copied these off his neighbor.

You can view more pieces at Neatorama.

ZERO DARK THIRTY Screenwriter to Pen UNCHARTED Film

Sony Pictures went out and hired an Oscar-winning screenwriter for their big screen adaptation of the hit video game Uncharted. The writer's name is Mark Boal, and he's written the scripts for the incredible war films Zero Dark Thirty and The Hurt Locker. He's a much better choice than the writer of the National Treasure movies, who is one of the writers they previously hired.

According to THR, Boal is a big fan of the video game franchise, and he envisions the story as a "swashbuckling adventure in the vein of Indiana Jones." That's basically a description of the video game, but if he can help bring the story and the Nathan Drake character to life on the big screen in an amazing way, then what more can the fans ask for?

The last we heard, the plan was to start shooting in 2015, so they've still got some time to get the script right. The video game centers on a treasure hunter named Nate Drake, who is a descendent of explorer Sir Francis Drake. He believes he has learned the location of the legendary golden South American city of El Dorado from a cursed statue. While on his search El Dorado, things take a turn when a rival treasure hunter joins in on the search. Along the way Drake faces crazy creatures, mutated descendants of Spaniards, and even Nazis.

Sony is still looking for the actor to take on the lead role of Drake. Mark Wahlberg was attached at one point, and the studio recently offered it to Chris Pratt, but, unfortunately, he passed. Pratt would have been a great choice! At least the development of the film is moving forward. This is one I've been excited about seeing a feature film adaptation for.

Boal is currently writing Triple Frontier for director Kathryn Bigelow. The story for that film centers on the controversial Army soldier Bowe Bergdahl, who was imprisoned by the Taliban and freed this year in a trade for prisoners held by the U.S. in Guantanamo Bay.
