OUTLANDER's Dougal MacKenzie Is the Biggest BAMF on TV

0
0

Warning: This post contains SPOILERS for all 6 previously aired episodes of Outlander.

If you aren’t watching Outlander yet, you should be. Yes, it’s basically a historical romance, but most historical romances don’t have disturbingly graphic flogging scenes like the one we saw on Saturday. Good hell, that was awful. Also, there is time travel, so it’s a fantasy historical romance. Plus, it’s about tension betweens Scots and the English, and that is very on trend. There are a lot of reasons to watch, but as time goes by and the show gets better and better, Dougal MacKenzie has become my absolute favorite thing on any TV show ever.

Played by Graham McTavish, Dougal MacKenzie is the image of the tough, rugged highlander. He is large and physically imposing, bald and bearded, with a strong nose and craggy features, plus a jawline that could cut glass. This is the leader of a highland clan. Only, he’s not. His brother Colum is the MacKenzie. Dougal is the War Chieftain, subordinate to his brother. The dynamic between the brothers is one of the most interesting things on the show because it is all subtext. Dougal is the stereotypical strong warrior, while Colum is sickly and bookish. But don’t think that makes Colum weak because he is tough as nails, and his brother is properly allegiant, even if he sometimes bristles at his secondary position. When Dougal vows loyalty to his brother in episode 4 everything is tense, but nothing is spoken.

Since the second episode, Dougal has been a consistent antagonist for Claire, a thorn in her side who knows she is lying about where she comes from (although, to be fair, even Jamie thinks Claire is lying, because she is), thinks she is probably an English spy, and has her followed day and night. He also might be using his side-piece Geillis to pretend to be Claire’s friend to pump her for information (that is total speculation and only half of my Geillis theory). He is a pretty formidable foe, and Claire has never felt quite safe around him. Until episode 4, “The Gathering,” in which Claire wins Dougal’s respect and gratitude when she comforts his old friend Geordie as he bleeds out after being gored by a boar. Dougal took the opportunity to tell Geordie that he had, in fact, fucked his sister. It’s a really sweet moment, and an important shift in their relationship. Although they are unlikely to ever be friends, her horrific encounter with Black Jack Randall in the most recent episode has shown that Dougal is actually Claire’s protector, and a ferocious one at that.

Here is an incomplete* list of Dougal’s badassery:

  • When we first meet Dougal he shuts down his sexually menacing soldiers by telling them that he doesn’t hold with rape, and “we don’t have time for it anyway.”
  • He gets most of the best lines. After Claire helps his sickly brother he tells her, “Seems that the feral cat we found on the road is trying to pull in her claws.” He seems to expect her to see this as a compliment.
  • He intercepts Claire when she is trying to escape, saves her from sexual assault, tries to assault her himself, comes to his senses after she knees him in the groin, and tells her to run from him. I don’t know. Dougal contains multitudes?
  • The aforementioned statement about Geordie’s sister. “Aye, I did bed her. But you know, she was a bonny lass.”
  • Just before that, while looking for Claire to medic Geordie, he saves her from being gored herself with the crackest shot I’ve ever seen with an 18th century gun. Then he takes a minute to glower at her.
  • When he wanted to put Jamie in his place, he joined a game of Shinty already in progress, and seemingly without regard to teams or sides, just started beating people with his stick.
  • Claire wins his respect when it is clear she’s “seen men die before. And of violence.” Basically, game recognizes game.
  • He brings a woman he believes is an English spy with him on the road and then actively commits acts of treason against the English crown right in front of her.
  • In a room full of English officers, he challenges one to a fight. “You pull that needle and we’ll see who pricks it.” Also he throws out insults of all kinds without rising to whatever they throw back at him.
  • He threatens Captain Randall with war if he doesn’t release Claire, even though he still kind of thinks she’s a spy and definitely isn’t ready for war with the English. Yet.
  • While he finally believes Claire when she says she isn’t a spy, he totally would have sliced her up if he thought she wasn’t telling the truth. He didn’t want to, though, because she’s “a handsome woman.”
  • When he tells Claire that she has to marry a Scotsman, she assumes he means himself. “I have to admit the idea of grinding your corn does tickle my fancy, but no.”

So there you go. No wonder some fans are shipping Claire and Dougal.

Here's the Shinty scene:

*Incomplete because an exhaustive list would just be everything he's ever done.

POPEYE Themed Art Show Will Blow You Down

0
0

If you were born in or before the 80s, you probably watched Popeye cartoons before school (Sorry 90s kids, I don't know your life). Maybe you even sang the charming ditty about his garbage can home. If you did, you are probably healthier for it. The cartoon boosted spinach sales when it aired, and a 2010 study found that kids ate more vegetables after watching the series. Sometimes I still buy Popeye brand spinach. Interestingly, Popeye’s original superpower was indestructibility, not superstrength, and it was acquired after he rubbed the head of Bernice the Whiffle Hen multiple times after being shot. But that was a) weird, and b) not going to make America strong, so the vitamin A-packed green became the source of his power.

In tribute to all that Popeye has done for us, the Hero Complex Gallery has a special show of artwork inspired by the leafy green loving hero. Popeye the Sailor Man: Strong to the Finich was curated by Chogrin, and you can see more of the pieces on tumblr.

Thanks to Geek Art for the tip.

DOCTOR STRANGE Set for Release in 2016, Will Shoot in UK

doctor-strange-set-for-release-in-2016-will-shoot-in-uk

Marvel has been developing Doctor Strange for years, and a new report from Screen Daily reveals that it will finally be released in theaters on July 8th, 2016. They also say that the studio is looking to shoot the film in May 2015 at Pinewood-Shepperton Studios in the UK.

Scott Derrickson (Sinister) is directing Doctor Strange from a script most recently written by Jon Spaihts. An earlier draft of the script had been written by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer.

It has yet to be announced who will play Strange in the film, but Joaquin Phoenix is said to be in final talks for the lead, and he's the one actor mentioned in the report. Other actors that have been previously linked to the role include Jared Leto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hardy, Edgar Ramirez, and Jack Huston

Doctor Strange was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and he made his first appearance in 1963's "Strange Tales" #110. It follows the adventures of Stephen Strange, "a brilliant neurosurgeon who, following a car accident, loses precision in his hands. His quest to regain his former skills sets Strange on a path to become the 'Master of the Mystic Arts.'"

Doctor Strange is a favorite character of mine, and with Derrickson on board to bring him to life, I trust that we'll get a great movie. I can't wait to see who the studio ends up casting in the lead role.

Hawkeye Vs. Deadpool Comic Art by Mike Mayhew

Hawkeye is kicking Deadpool's ass while Rocket and Groot enjoy the show in this variant cover art for Hawkeye Vs. Deadpool #1. The illustration was created by Mike Mayhew, and it's awesome.

The comic was released on September 3rd, and it was written by Gerry Duggan. Here's a description of the comic series:

HAWKEYE VS DEADPOOL VS CRIME • Once upon a time, champions emerged to fight evil plaguing humanity. They fought for salvation, for all that is good in the world -- and they won. They were kind, generous and self-sacrificing. They were heroes. • These are not those heroes. • Meet Hawkeye: Ladies man ('ladies man' because the ladies love to hate this man), crossbow crusader and, most importantly, Avenger. He’s the only guy on the team without any powers, though, so cut him a little slack. • Then there’s Deadpool (MR. Deadpool to you, skippy) -- the regeneratin’ degenerate. You can shoot him, stab him, and make with the punchy-punchy right in his face, but nothing can keep the Merc with a Mouth down. • What do they have in common? Halloween and a S.H.I.E.L.D. espionage mystery that has the both heroes racing against the clock while outshining one another. It’s a Hawkeye & Deadpool comic 75 years in the making, give or take 75 years.

Sounds like fun!

Patrick Warburton Says THE TICK Revival May Be Darker and Edgier

0

patrick-warburton-says-the-tick-revival-may-be-a-darker-vision1

A couple of weeks ago it was announced that a live-action revival of the TV series The Tick is in development and that Patrick Warburton will be returning to the role, which is freakin' cool! I couldn't believe it when I first heard that this was actually happening. I would have never thought in a million years that we would see The Tick back on the small screen and that it would star the same guy who played the goofy hero the first time around.

The original creator of the character, Ben Edlund, will write and produce the series, and it will premiere on Amazon. There's not much more information on it than that. It would be great if they got some of the other original cast members back to reprise their roles, like Ron Perlman who played Fiery Blaze. Other actors included David Burke as Arthur, Liz Vassey as Captain Liberty, and Nestor Carbonell as Batmanuel.

In an interview with MovieWeb, Warburton talked about the new series and revealed as much as he could. One thing is for sure, he seems excited about it.

"I'm really not at liberty to discuss anything in regards to The Tick right now. I will say, isn't it ironic that Captain Liberty's friend isn't at liberty? Are there discussions? I would say things look very interesting and positive. I love The Tick. I'd love to do it again. I never would have thought I'd have the opportunity to do this again. I think it would be a blast to do it again. We'll see what happens. One thing about The Tick, he is an insane character. I guess he doesn't have to be 29 years-old like Thor, I guess. He'll be 50 battling evil. I'd love to see what Ben Edlund's new vision for it is. I think it will be different. Perhaps a little darker and a little edgier. We'll see what happens."

There's nothing wrong with a little darkness and edge with The Tick. That would actually fall in line with the original comic, which featured a Tick character that was a little less goofy than he was in the original animated and live-action TV series. The comic was slightly darker and the Tick was more of a damaged character. It had a perfect mix of grittiness and humor, though. I'd love to see that happen for this new series. The actor went on to talk about the costume.

"There were probably five different Tick costumes for the original series. I would assume there would be a new design. Let’s say hypothetically that The Tick, we’re going to attack it again. It would be all-new. It would be a new conception. There are so many advantages to the creatives today, that there weren’t 12 years ago. As far as doing things, and creating a whole new world for The Tick. It would have been too costly and hard to do 12 years ago."

Of course they'll give him a new suit, and I'm looking forward to seeing what the new, updated design looks like. I don't think they'll stray too far from the original concept though.

It seems like things are still in the works, but I really want this to happen so bad. The Tick is one of my favorite comic characters ever, and it's about time he makes a comeback!

EDGE OF TOMORROW Had Some Amazing Practical Effects

The Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, and Doug Liman sci-fi action film Edge of Tomorrow is one of the coolest movies I've seen this year, and the practical effects that were used to make it were incredible! Here is a behind-the-scenes video about the film that shows us just how much of the film actually used practical effects, and it's really cool to see what they were able to pull off. Watching this video actually made me like the movie even more. Too bad the marketing behind the movie sucked. It could have done so much better at the box office.

First Look at Sharlto Copley in POWERS — Cop Drama in a Superhero World

0
0

Sony has released the first image from Powers, the PlayStation Network's first original show. It's based on the Powers comic book series by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Michael Avon Oeming.

Executive producer Charlie Huston talks about what the show Powers is:

"It's such a clever concept to try and imagine a real world where you actually have to deal with powers and how they impact society, and to do that through the lens of a cop drama."

The show centers on two cops and is set in a world were superpowers are real. Sharlto Copley plays Christian Walker, who is an expert a dealing with superpowered people. Susan Heyward plays Deena Pilgrim, who is young and inexperienced but has instinctive detective skills. There is also one last twist — one of them used to be a superhero.

The 10 episode run does not yet have an air date. If you'd like to read more about how the show is being adapted, check out the full interview on USA Today.

Glen Brogan Puts Pop Culture Center Stage in "Back From The Drawing Board"

We’ve featured a few pieces from artist Glen Brogan in the past, but now that he has his own show at Bottleneck Gallery, we have a whole treasure trove of his work to enjoy. His pieces are stylized and a little cartoony and a whole lot of fun. I think my favorite print is "Triple Word Score," featuring the Guardians of the Galaxy playing Scrabble. I’m thinking that would be a pretty intense game. His imagining of the Disney vault is pretty fun/dispiriting as well. The other pieces tackle everything pop culture related, and I've included my favorites below. You can see them all at Geek Art, and limited quantities of his prints are available on the Bottleneck Gallery website.

Boardwalk Empire's Jack Huston Cast as BEN-HUR in Remake

0
0

Boardwalk Empire co-star Jack Huston has landed the role of Ben-Hur in director Timur Bekmambetov's version of the classic story. Huston will join Morgan Freeman, previously cast in the role of Ildarin, who teaches Ben-Hur to race chariots.

There was a chance that Tom Hiddleston could have taken the part, but it looks like he opted to take the lead role in Legendary Pictures' King Kong prequel Skull Island. It would have been great to see Hiddleston in the role, but Huston is a pretty damn good choice as well. I'm sure he'll be awesome in the role, but it also means that he is likely out of the running for Doctor Strange.

The film will be based on the 1880 novel Ben-Hur: A Tale Of The Christ, which was written by Lew Wallace. Here's a previously released description of what the film will focus on:

"This version plays up the parallel storyline of Jesus Christ, but the focus is the blood feud between Judah Ben-Hur and Messala, who grew up best friends before the Roman Empire took control of Jerusalem. Judah Ben-Hur was a Jewish prince and Messala the son of a Roman tax collector. After the latter leaves to be educated in Rome for five years, the young man returns with a different attitude and mocks Judah and his religion. When a procession passes by Judah’s house and a roof tile accidentally falls and hits the governor, Messala betrays his childhood friend and manipulates the accident so that Judah is sold into slavery and certain death on a Roman warship, with his mother and sister thrown in prison for life. Judah vows revenge, culminating in the famed chariot races."

Bekmambetov has a unique and cool directing style, and it will be interesting to see how he incorporates that style into this kind of movie.

Haunting LAST OF US Fan Film - L4ST

haunting-last-of-us-fan-film-l4st

Sam Raimi is already set to produce a feature film adaptation of the hit video game Last of Us. While we wait for that film, we have some talented fans to keep us entertained. Today we have an action short film based on the video game for you to watch. It was directed by Mikko Löppönen from Finland, and it has a very dark haunting atmosphere with an uncomfortable tone that I like. Here's the synopsis:

Friendship is nothing. Survival is everything. Two survivors pick the wrong house to scavenge for food. This boils down to a deadly confrontation inside an abandoned building. L4ST. Finally RELEASED while playing a lot of DayZ. Hope you guys enjoy and remember to check the behind the scenes for a look at how a bunch of idiots do shortfilms.

This is really impressive for a fan film, and I can only imagine how much great it could have been if they actually had a decent budget to work with. Check it out!

David Fincher Discusses His 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA

0
0
david-fincher-discusses-his-20000-leagues-under-the-sea

Disney is still making their new version of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. It doesn't seem like David Fincher isn't going to be a part of it, though. Apparently the director and the studio couldn't agree on who should star in the film. After Brad Pitt passed on the role, Fincher was looking at Channing Tatum, but the studio wanted Chris Hemsworth, and things just weren't meshing well between the studio and the director, so Fincher dropped out.

It's a shame that Fincher's vision of this movie will never be realized. Fincher is one of the most talented directors working today, and he would have given us something superb. In an interview with Playboy he discussed his plans for the adaptation of Jules Verne's classic novel, saying,

"Dude, it was [frick]ing cool. It was smart and crazy entertaining, with the Nautilus crew fighting every kind of gigantic Ray Harryhausen thing. But it also had this riptide to it. We were doing Osama bin Nemo, a Middle Eastern prince from a wealthy family who has decided that white imperialism is evil and should be resisted. The notion was to put kids in a place where they’d say, 'I agree with everything he espouses. I take issue with his means—or his ends.' I really wanted to do it, but in the end I didn’t have the stomach lining for it. A lot of people flourish at Hollywood studios because they’re fear-based. I have a hard time relating to that, because I feel our biggest responsibility is to give the audience something they haven’t seen."

He makes some good points there at the end about the Hollywood studios being fear based. That's why we keep seeing lots of remakes and sequels these days. The studios are just playing it safe. I am one of those audiences members, though, that love seeing things I haven't seen before on film. There's no doubt the director would have given audiences something they had never seen before with this movie. One of the other interesting things he said in the interview is that he finds superhero movies dull. When asked what he thought about them, he replied,

"I find it dull. I like to anticipate the energy of a movie audience that’s waiting for the curtain to come up and thinking, Well, one thing we don’t know about this guy is that we don’t know how bad it can get."

So I guess we're never going to see Fincher direct a superhero movie either. We may not see him direct 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea or a comic book film, but at least he'll keep making great movies.

ARROW — 16 New Photos and Nick Tarabay Cast as Captain Boomerang

In my opinion, Arrow is the best live-action superhero TV show of all time. I eagerly await its return for Season 3. Until it comes back, we've got 16 images that feature Stephen Amell as The Arrow, Colton Haynes as Arsenal,  Brandon Routh as Ray Palmer, Peter Stormare as Count Vertigo, Emily Bett Rickards as Felicity Smoak, and many more.

Arrow has also cast Nick Tarabay as Digger Harkness, who is better known as Captain Boomerang. Tarabay is best known from being on Spartacus. His character will crossover with the new The Flash series.

Arrow will return October 8th at 8pm on The CW.

Will GHOSTBUSTERS get a Marvel-Style Universe?

0
0
will-we-see-a-marvel-style-universe-for-ghostbusters

The talk of a new Ghostbusters movie has escalated from a third film with an all-female cast to an all out Marvel-style connected universe. The news comes from co-writer and star Dan Aykroyd, who was in London promoting his brand of Crystal Head vodka. I don't know if the actor was drunk when he said this, but here's the quote:

"It’s beyond just another sequel, a prequel, another TV show. I'm thinking what does the whole brand mean to Sony? What does Pixar and Star Wars mean to Disney? What does Marvel mean to Fox?"

He went on to say that the whole Ghostbusters team, including himself, the executives, the creative talent, and producer Ivan Reitman are looking at the next 10 years of the franchise.

He went on to say that the focus is not on "just another movie or another TV show, but what’s the totality of it? The whole mythology from the beginning of their lives, the end of their lives. Ghostbusters at nine years old, Ghostbusters in high school." Aykroyd then used the Ecto-1 as an analogy to drive his point home:

"It’s up on blocks, it needs new electronics, new everything. That’s what we have to do. The whole vehicle of Ghostbusters has to be rebuilt. That’s the ambitious thinking that’s going on now. Taking on the model of Marvel where we take all of the elements that are in this movie and we put them out there as different ideas."

When the idea of an all-female version of Ghostbusters was a real thing, he said it was a possibility for the third or fourth film. It wasn't specified if that was the third or fourth film in this new universe he wants to develop though. He just said that they need to write it.

A third Ghostbusters has been in the works forever, and even though it seems like it's making some headway and it's on the road to happening, it's kind of hard to believe that it will ever happen. Let alone multiple films that would fill a cinematic universe. If it does actually happen though, awesome!

New Photos from THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY - PART 1

0
0

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 opens in a couple months, and I’m getting pretty excited, especially after that bomb ass trailer that dropped this week. The marketing machine is ramping up, so today we have new photos — some stills, some publicity shots — that feature Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, and Natalie Dormer. Lawrence and Hemsworth are playing Katniss and Gale again, and Dormer is playing a new character named Cressida. In the books she was a defector from the Capitol who directed the propaganda films showing Katniss as the Mockingjay, and you can see her with a camera in the trailer, but in these publicity photos she is holding a big, scary-ass gun. It makes me wonder how much they have tweaked the character for the film, which makes me wonder how much they have tweaked the whole thing. Hopefully they’ve tweaked it so Peeta just [spoiler redacted] and not [spoiler redacted].

The photos also give us our first good look at the Cinna-designed Mockingjay uniform, and it is fantastic. That lattice-work detail under the corset is pretty great.

The worldwide phenomenon of The Hunger Games continues to set the world on fire with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1, which finds Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) in District 13 after she literally shatters the games forever. Under the leadership of President Coin (Julianne Moore) and the advice of her trusted friends, Katniss spreads her wings as she fights to save Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and a nation moved by her courage. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 is directed by Francis Lawrence from a screenplay by Danny Strong and Peter Craig.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 also stars Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jeffrey Wright, Sam Claflin, Jena Malone, Donald Sutherland, and Stanley Tucci. It’s in theaters on November 22.

Heartbreaking Animated Short about a Lonely Robot - L3.0

0

l30-is-a-sad-animated-short-about-a-lonely-robot

This seriously might be one of the saddest, most heartbreaking shorts ever. However, it's beautifully made and a must watch film.

"L3.0" is a student film that tells the story of a lonely robot living in a world were there are no living things. The robot spends its days writing notes on paper planes and throwing them over the city in the hopes that they will attract some company for him. One day it gets an unexpected visitor and through a series of events we learn the real reason for the robot's solitude.

This animated short was created by a group of students at ISART Digital, and the ending is definitely a tear-jerker. It may be sad, but it really is a great film.

ZOOLANDER 2 Script Read-Through Happening Soon

zoolander-2-script-read-through-happening-soon

The script for Ben Stiller's Zoolander 2 is complete, and we are just waiting to see if the studio is going to move forward with it. Things seem to be taking a step forward, regardless. Will Ferrell recently had this to say to in an interview with JoBlo when asked about it:

"We are actually supposed to do a read-through of a sequel script soon, and Mugatu is a part of it."

So I guess that's confirmation that Mugatu will be back. I thought Zoolander was brilliant and hilarious when I first saw it, and then the more I watched it the funnier it seemed to get. The absurdity of it was just perfectly executed, and the fact that we might see a sequel happen is great. Like the first film, I'm sure it will be packed full of incredibly funny one-liners and cameos.

Ferrell will next be seen Etan Cohen's (writer of Tropic Thunder and Idiocracy) Get Hard, which will be released on March 27th, 2015.

We'll continue to keep you updated on the Zoolander 2 movie news.

Wonder Woman: Rebellion of Justice Art by Otto Schmidt

wonder-woman-rebellion-of-justice-art-by-otto-schmidt

Artist Otto Schmidt released a new illustration he did of Wonder Woman called "Rebellion of Justice," and it's a very different look for the character. One of the things that stands out to me is the hardened look that the heroine has, with the scar running across her face. I also like the little touch of the costume peeking out under the leather jacket she's wearing. This is a Wonder Woman that I believe could kick some major ass.
