BIG HERO 6 TV Spot - "My Ninja Skills Are Sweet"

big-hero-6-tv-spot-my-ninja-skills-are-sweet

Here's the latest TV spot for Disney's Big Hero 6, and it's called "My Ninja Skills Are Sweet." This movie is going to be incredibly entertaining. To read about some things I learned at an early press event for the film, , click here. This is the most excited that I've been for a Disney animated movie in a long time. One of the reasons is because it falls in line with some of my other favorite animated movies such as The Iron Giant and The Incredibles

Big Hero 6 is an action-packed comedy-adventure about robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who learns to harness his genius—thanks to his brilliant brother Tadashi and their like-minded friends: adrenaline junkie Go Go Tamago, neatnik Wasabi, chemistry whiz Honey Lemon and fanboy Fred. When a devastating turn of events catapults them into the midst of a dangerous plot unfolding in the streets of San Fransokyo, Hiro turns to his closest companion—a robot named Baymax—and transforms the group into a band of high-tech heroes determined to solve the mystery. Inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, and featuring comic-book style action,

The movie is being directed by Don Hall (Winnie the Pooh) and Chris Williams (Bolt), and it hits theaters in 3D on November 7th, 2014.

New Universal Monster Action Figures

This last weekend I spent some time at the Son of Monsterpalooza horror convention and I saw lots of cool monster and creature toys. I enjoy collecting these kinds of things, and with Halloween just around the corner we're probably going to see an influx of horror-themed toys popping up. Today I wanted to share three Universal Monster action figures that are being released by Diamond Select Toys that consist of Son of Frankenstein, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and Van Helsing. The 7-inch-scale action figures are now available at Toys "R" Us and comic shops. Looks like I'll be toy hunting tonight!

Trailer for the Sci-Fi Horror Thriller EXTRATERRESTRIAL

trailer-for-the-sci-fi-horror-thriller-extraterrestrial

A trailer for a nightmarish looking sci-fi horror thriller called Extraterrestrial has been released. The film was directed by the Vicious Brothers. Their last project was the 2011 indie horror flick Grave Encounters, which was actually a decent horror movie.

The story follows a group of friends who head into the woods to stay in a cabin for a fun weekend. What they don't know is that it will be a lovely weekend of death after they witness a UFO crash nearby. When they go to check it out, all hell breaks loose. The aliens that reside in this ship are looking to shed some blood.

I actually really liked what I saw in the trailer. It's not going to be the most amazing movie ever made, but it looks cool, and it should be a fun ride. The movie hits theaters on November 21st.

AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. — 7 New Photos From the Episode "Shadows"

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s second season starts next week with an episode title "Shadows." Marvel has released several photos that feature a few of the show's new guest stars, including Hayley Atwell as Agent Carter, Lucy Lawless as Agent Isabelle Hartley, and Brian Patrick Wade as Crusher Creel. Also returning is guest star Patton Oswalt as Agent Koenig.

I really hope the break between seasons has given the creative team time to even out the uneven parts — namely the spotty villains, uninteresting plots, all over the place character traits, and just badly conceived season structure. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns Tuesday, September 23 at its new time, 9:00 p.m. ET.

Join the Fight in This 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA Poster

Brussels-based Nautilus Art Prints just released these beautiful prints by artist Jonathan Burton, featuring Captain Nemo and the Nautilus battling the giant squid (genus Architeuthis, a word I learned last week and am sneaking in everywhere I get a chance). Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is one of the foundational sci-fi/fantasy texts, and this is a really incredible take on it that every geek should want on their walls. I really love the way Burton framed the scene and his use of perspective to convey the scale. It really puts the viewer into the fight.

The posters are limited edition, so if you want one, jump on it now. The regular (above) is selling for €45, and the variant (below) is €65. I kind of like the bright sunniness of the regular print better, so I say save the $25.88 difference and get the regular. You can pick it up here.

AMERICAN HORROR STORY: FREAK SHOW - Twisted Teaser and Poster

FX continues to roll out the American Horror Story: Freak Show teasers. The most recent one you're about to watch is called "Big and Small," and it's pretty self explanatory why they called it that. It's not as creepy as some of the others, but visually it looks cool. I also included a poster that at first glance doesn't look like the creepy kind of image we're used to seeing from this series, but look a little closer, particularly at the hands.

American Horror Story: Freak Show begins its tale in the quiet, sleepy hamlet of Jupiter, Florida. The year is 1952. A troupe of curiosities has just arrived to town, coinciding with the strange emergence of a dark entity that savagely threatens the lives of townsfolk and freaks alike. This is the story of the performers and their desperate journey of survival amidst the dying world of the American carny experience.

American Horror Story: Freak Show premieres Wednesday, October 8th at 10 PM on FX. Thanks to E! Online for the poster.

Today's animated short film is called "It's Payback Time," and it features a society of blob-shaped beings that have been hit with a nightmarish epidemic that is causing them to explode in a mess of blue goo. The characters are terrified beyond belief, and no one knows how to stop it. One thing is for sure is that they really do all deserve to die.

Their world is in the grip of a lethal outbreak. A mysterious blue substance is leading to catastrophic destruction. Who is behind it all?

The short was directed by Chris Bovill and John Allison for Nexus, and it is an ad for UK's arm of Stand Up 2 Cancer, which is a fundraising effort to help find a cure for the disease.

Breathtaking Trailer for JACK AND THE CUCKOO-CLOCK HEART Animated Film

sensational-trailer-for-jack-and-the-cuckoo-clock-heart-animated-film

This is a fantastic trailer for a jaw-droppingly amazing looking animated film called Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart. I don't know how I had never heard of this before, but wow! The movie seems to have kind of a Tim Burton vibe to it with its circus-like atmosphere, beautiful animation, and music.

The film is based on a novel written by Dionysos’s lead singer, Mathias Malzieu. He also directed the film and worked with music video director Stéphane Berla to bring it to life.

The story revolves around Jack "whose heart was frozen on the day of his birth and replaced with a cuckoo-clock. Because of the delicate apparatus keeping him going, he lives by only three rules: never touch the hands of the clock; control his temper at all times; and most heartbreakingly, never fall in love. Any massive emotion could stop his clock and thus end his life. As with all fairy tales, these rules all go out the window when he falls in love with a young singer on a street corner, and he is off on an adventure that will take him all over Europe."

The English version of the film stars the voices of Michelle Fairley (Game of Thrones), Samantha Barks (Les Miserables), and Orlando Seale. The movie is set to be released later this month on September 24th.

When the X-Men need reinforcements they can always count on lady luck herself — Neena Thurman, more widely known as Domino. Longtime member of X-Force and an off and on X-Man, Domino has always been the go-to gal when the group needs a bit of skill and luck on a mission, reason being that when she's around her abilities tend to skew things in their favor. Of course, her aim with a sniper rifle doesn’t exactly hurt either. Alright, enough piling on the compliments. Here is some of the best Domino cosplay around.

Tom Hiddleston to Star in SKULL ISLAND!

Legendary Pictures announced at Comic-Con in July that they are making Skull Island, which will be a King Kong origin story. The studio has now announced that Tom Hiddleston (Thor, The Avengers) will star in the movie, and it will be directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who is the director of the fantastic indie comedy Kings of Summer.

The studio showed off a teaser of the film at Comic-Con that took us through Skull Island and ended with King Kong standing up through the trees, beating his chest and letting out that classic Kong roar.

Hiddleston is an great actor and a favorite among fanboys and fangirls. There's no word on who he'll be playing in the movie, but I'm glad that he's going to be in it. I'm sure Legendary is happy about it as well. I also think that Vogt-Roberts is talented director and that he'll do an awesome job bringing this story to the big screen.

The script for the King Kong prequel was already written by Max Borenstein, and it will be released on November 4th, 2016.

Here's a note from the artist:

"The circle is now complete! Like so many kids in the early 80's, #starwars completely ruled my childhood. It not only created endless hours of entertainment but launched so many kids' creativity into hyperspace. I remember drawing x-wings, stormtroopers, AT-ATs, and lightsaber duels when I was 5. To be able to relive all that magic and wonder as a grizzled old man is such an honor. I've never had more fun on a project and I cannot wait to do even more. #anewhope #empirestrikesback #returnofthejedi #darthvader #lukeskywalker #starwarsart"

You’ll Love to Hate Jason Schwartzman in LISTEN UP PHILIP Trailer

$

0

Here’s the second trailer for writer-director Alex Ross Perry's Listen Up Philip. I caught the film at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. While the performances from the entire cast are top notch, I found it really difficult to get into the movie. Despite Jason Schwartzman turning in his absolute comedic best as a beyond self-absorbed author, the film is less a dark comedy and more of a dreary drama — and a draining one at that. But for what Schwartzman brought to this likable A-hole it may be worth sitting through some of the story’s fat.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Anger rages in Philip (Schwartzman) as he awaits the publication of his second novel. He feels pushed out of his adopted home city by the constant crowds and noise, a deteriorating relationship with his photographer girlfriend Ashley (Elizabeth Moss), and his own indifference to promoting the novel. When Philip's idol Ike Zimmerman (Jonathan Pryce) offers his isolated summer home as a refuge, he finally gets the peace and quiet to focus on his favorite subject: himself.

I think with some tightening up, though, the film could have been more palatable, and it could very well have been cut down since its debut at Sundance. I did find the way Perry structured the narrative — splitting the film into chapters focusing on characters who weave in and out of Philip’s life — quite interesting.

The first trailer that was released earlier this year didn’t include any actual footage from the film, but featured the cast in character recording messages for Philip. That trailer actually managed to give away more of the story than this new trailer. However, this new one they released has actual footage and gives you a better idea of the tone of the film.

Listen Up Philip also stars Krysten Ritter and Joséphine de La Baume and hits theaters October 17th.

You've got to check out this teaser trailer for an awesome-looking sci-fi indie film called SYNC. The movie was written and directed by VFX artist and filmmaker Hasraf 'HaZ' Dulull, director of the space exploration short "Project Kronos," which is getting a feature film adaptation. This follow-up project has the potential to be great. I really liked what I saw in this teaser, and I hope we get to see more soon. Here's the synopsis:

Every 15 seconds, a computer, network, or mobile device is hacked by cyber-terrorists. To combat this problem, Syntek Industries has manufactured data couriers designed from advanced machine robotics. These couriers are known as SYNCS. Syncs are programmed to securely deliver data packages without interruption.

GHOSTBUSTERS Themed Donuts Coming from Krispy Kreme

A few weeks ago I took my kids to go see Ghostbusters on the big screen, and we all had a blast. That was the first time I had seen it on the big screen since it was first released in 1984. I've watched it with my kids countless times, but taking them to see it in the theaters was a really fun experience for them. They love that movie.

Anyway, in celebration of the films 30th anniversary Krispy Kreme is selling Ghostbusters themed donuts with a marshmallow cream filling. How cool is that! Here are the descriptions of the two themed donuts they are offering:

  • Ghostbusters Doughnut: A marshmallow Kreme-filled shell topped with white icing, a decorative green “splat” inspired by Slimer’s green slime, and topped with a Ghostbusters logo sugar piece.
  • Stay Puft Marshmallow: A marshmallow Kreme-filled shell topped with white icing, decorated with a chocolate frosting Stay Puft Marshmallow Man face and a sugar piece hat.

The donuts are available at participating Krispy Kreme US locations, which you can find here. You will be able to get the tasty sugary treats starting on September 29th, 2014, while supplies last. Looks like I'll be making a Ghostbusters donut run with the kids in the near future.

Trailer for BATMAN: THE COMPLETE TELEVISION SERIES Blu-ray Set

$

For the first time ever, the entire 1960s Batman television series will be available on Blu-ray. All 120 episodes have been fully remastered in HD for this limited edition set that comes with 3 hours of bonus footage, an Adam West scrapbook, trading cards, and more. 120 episodes is a lot for a show that only ran 3 seasons. It takes the average show about 5 seasons to get to around 100 episodes. The high count is due to the fact that the network split the original hour-long episodes into two half-hour parts that would run in the same week. It seems like an evil plot thought up by the Joker, but it was really just a way of creating cliffhangers that would increase ratings. Holy clever marketing, Batman! (Note: the show later went on to assume a weekly half-hour format)

As you’ll see in the trailer, they did a beautiful job of restoring the footage. The iconic colorful costumes have never looked better! Batman: The Complete Television Series will also be available on DVD and Digital HD November 11th.

Anthony Daniels on Returning as C-3PO in STAR WARS: EPISODE VII

anthony-daniels-discusses-his-c3-po-suit-in-star-wars-episode-vii

Anthony Daniels is a staple in the Star Wars universe. He's the man that brought C-3PO to life, and he's reprising the iconic robotic role in J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode VII. In a recent interview with EW, the actor talked about coming back for the role and how it all came about. He also discussed the new and improved suit that he will be wearing in the movie. Don't worry! They haven't changed the look of the droid, they just made a costume that was more comfortable for him to wear. He talks about all of this stuff in the following quote:

"I will tell you that when [director] J.J. Abrams rang me to ask about filming Episode VII, one of the first things he said after he told me how wonderful I was — and that didn’t take long — but he then said, 'Would you be interested in being in the film just doing the voice?' I said, 'No,' and he said, 'Right!' He knew I’d say that. There’s no way I would just do the voice. I also said that it can’t be the same suit. I will tell you that the team then got together and built a new suit. They made an entirely new look-a-like with changes that you will never notice [on screen] that made my life a lot easier. I can get it on and off very quickly. [During the prequels], the only time [Threepio has] been CG was when it was very dangerous [to act in the scene in a suit] — and it wasn’t very good. In fact, I’m going to say it was awful. One of the difficulties is with a character that you know and love so well is that, as a member of the audience, you go, 'Oh no, that’s not right. No, he doesn’t move like that.' With me [in the suit], he’s always going to move the same way and have the same reactions, timing, and so on. With CG, you’re working with some brilliant person on the keyboard who is trying to pretend to be me. The only time that has worked without doubt is Disney’s Star Tours: The Adventures Continue [theme park ride]. There’s an element in the pre-show which is digital and I cannot tell it’s not me. It’s brilliantly done by Disney. In a cartoon series like Rebels, you accept it because it’s not trying to pretend to be reality. It’s an extension, it’s an exaggeration. On that basis, it’s utterly acceptable — providing the characterization is correct."

I never for a moment thought that they would try to make a CGI C-3PO for Episode VII as the talented people who are making it are true fans of the original trilogy. We've already seen a ton of practical effects that have been created for the movie like the sets, ships, and even puppet characters.

Daniels was then asked about the character's personality and if he's grown, to which the actor replied:

"It’s a very good question actually. [Pause]. If you ask me about Episode VII … of course I will deny any knowledge whatsoever. But it occurred to me on the set the other day, because I’ve been doing it for so long, being 3PO for so long, I have a kind of confidence about what he would do in a particular scene. I think 3PO might have grown in confidence over the years because he’s survived so many dramas and he’s gained so much knowledge about what’s going on in the galaxy. He may have grown in that way. But generally the way he appears to grow is by being faced by new situations and new conflicts. He’s very much a washing machine — you could put in a set of fine lingerie and he might do it on a different cycle. It’s what you give him to do that brings out fresh attitudes. He might meet somebody who is rude or smelly or just awful and that brings out — I won’t say snobbishness, he is a bit of a snob but … it brings out his reactive quality. That’s always funny for me because I look for new ways to become appalled. A lot of the time in the studio, you should realize, I read the words, my mouth opens, he comes out of my mouth and we all laugh. I laugh. The director laughs, and the engineer laughs. You think, 'Yeah, this is really good.'"

Star Wars Rebels was then brought up in the interview, and it was pointed out that the upcoming series has an early Star Wars kind of feel to it. This led to Daniels to talk a little bit more about Episode VII, and shares one of his experiences from working on the other Star Wars movies with George Lucas.

"It’s very elusive and I’ll tell you: It’s where we’re going now with Episode VII. We’re all back. And it’s great, actually, that Rebels is set before Episode IV because that film is quintessential basic, 'This is Star Wars.' And you know George always used to say every time I arrived on set, I would always arrive for the first time back on set in costume, and during the prequels George would say when I arrived on set that 'Star Wars has arrived' — because I was the old fashioned link. Rebels is is an old fashion link to the old fashion film, which which we all loved. And you will love Episode VII — I have electrodes strapped to my head to zap me if I say anything more about it."

These are just a few quotes that I pulled from a bigger interview, so if you'd like to read more about what Daniels had to say, click here. It's going to be great and refreshing to see the old Star Wars gang back up on the big screen together again. The film is scheduled for release on December 18th, 2015.

Here’s a very limited edition set of prints titled “Marvel Masks,” which debuted over on XombieDirge. Though I’m not sure if Venom’s symbiotic form is technically a mask, it’s impressive that artist Jason Liwag was able to make these Marvel characters incredibly emotive using just that portion of their bodies against a blank background.

The 5” X 5” mini Giclée prints will be available Phone Booth Gallery and will be on sale at Mondo-Con in Austin, TX from September 20th-21st, 2014. A small number of prints will also be reserved and will be available shortly afterwards at Jason’s online store.
