Video of TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES Comic-Con Panel

The media blitz for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has been in full effect for a while now. Countless clips and TV spots have already been released, and with the movie coming out in a little over a week, there’s no need to go into too much detail about the footage that was shown during Paramount’s presentation for the film. I will say, though, that while the action is exactly what you’d expect from a Michael Bay-produced film, the humor was surprisingly on point, albeit unabashedly geared towards a younger audience. The footage also further hinted at April O'Neil's shared history with Splinter.

The panel consisted of producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form, co-creator Kevin Eastman, director Jonathan Liebesman, and cast members Megan Fox (April O’Neil) and Will Arnett (Vernon Fenwick). During the Q&A portion, Eastman deftly sidestepped a question about previous incarnations of the script involving aliens, and the entire panel also talked about who their favorite Ninja Turtle is. Thanks mostly to Arnett, the panel offers some laughs and is worth checking out if you’re looking forward to seeing this film or if you’re on the fence and could use a bit more convincing.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hits theaters August 8th, 2014.

Robert Downey Jr. is the coolest cat out there. The site Pin-up-rdj has created and collected numerous images of Downey as a classic pinup girl. Some of the photoshopped creations are good to the point of disturbing. Downey is downright sassy and full of confidence, proving he can pull off any look. Thanks to Geek x Girls for finding this.

Warner Bros. and New Line have released the first epic trailer The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. It looks like Peter Jackson might be aiming to top the Battle of the Pelennor Fields in Return of The King. The whole cast top to bottom is in battle mode. We finally get to see Lee Pace in action and not just reservedly sitting or staring.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies forms ranks and assaults theaters December 17th (USA).

Batgirl's New Look Has Supergirl Super Amped

Batgirl has a new, totally badass look, which is a relief. Instead of spandex and high heels, Barbara Gordon is wearing a cool, highly functional leather jacket with detachable cape and Doc Martens. I would cosplay the shit out of this outfit. It’s definitely in keeping with her new Nancy Drew/Veronica Mars persona, and in this art by Mike Mailhack, no one is more excited about her look than Supergirl. Which I get. I mean, who doesn’t love a makeover?

Watch THE GIVER Comic-Con Panel with Jeff Bridges and Lois Lowry

It’s been a long road, but in a couple of weeks Lois Lowry's young-adult sci-fi novel The Giver will finally be released as a major motion picture. Jeff Bridges had been trying to develop the film since the book was first released in 1993, originally planning to direct and have his father Lloyd play The Giver. Things have obviously changed, with Phillip Noyce directing and Jeff taking over the title role. The Weinstein Co. are hoping for a successful franchise with this property that predates all the YA dystopian films that have been flooding the market lately. The studio gave fans in attendance at their Comic-Con panel an extended look at the film, which better showcased the scope of the movie and the expansiveness of the world as the main character begins to see it as it really is.

Along with Lowry and Bridges, the panel also included producer Nikki Silver and actors Brenton Thwaites and Odeya Rush. Many of the audience questions were directed towards Lowry, who kept having to remind them that they were promoting the film. She did, however, clarify some misconceptions about the ending of the novel and how that transitions into the sequels. She also talked about the controversial parts of the book that caused it to be banned in certain parts of the world, one of which was cut from the script — it was also a part she was hoping to play herself. Bridges chronicled his involvement in getting the film made, and Thwaites and Rush talked about their approaches to the characters who were made older in the film than they are in the book.

Notable cast members who weren’t able to attend the panel were Meryl Streep, Alexander Skarsgård, Katie Holmes, and Taylor Swift. The Giver will be released on August 15th, 2014.

DISNEY INFINITY 2.0 - Changes Aplenty with a Dash of Groot and Rocket Raccoon

Over the last few weeks, there have been a slew of announcements regarding Disney Infinity 2.0, including its release date of September 23rd. If you've missed a few of them, here is a handy dandy list to get you up to speed.

First we have the Guardians of the Galaxy playset, which contains Star Lord and Gamora. The playset itself features the action taking place on Knowhere, the improbable floating head space base (at least it was for a while in the books). For comic fans, hopefully this means we will get some cameos from Cosmo, because no Guardians game is complete without the awesomeness that is the telepathic Russian space dog. All 5 members of the core group will be available separately, and will feature Drax, Groot, and of course, Rocket Raccoon in addition to Star Lord and Gamora. Peep the trailer below to catch how Knowhere looks Disneyfied.

Pretty sweet, right? The trailer also shows the antagonist of the playset, Ronan the Accuser, and shows some of the parts that will be avaialble in the toy box.

Next up we have the collectors edition, which includes all of the Avengers, including the big green giant, Hulk. You will only get early access to Hulk through this set, as he will not release individually until later. The set also includes a snazzy glow in the dark base to display your characters on, with big evil frost giant monster in tow.  The set will retail for about $179.99, and is available for pre-order now. In addition to that, there will also be a 12GB PlayStation 3 bundle released later this year that includes the Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes Starter Pack, which will run $249.99. Not a bad deal at all.

Finally, we have some additional information (thanks to Polygon) about the 2.0 edition in general. There will be two new sets of power discs (20 each) released for Infinity, which include numerous powers and accessories, as well as costumes for some of the Marvel heroes. Two of those will be ship with the starter pack, and feature two self-contained adventures. The first is titled Assault on Asgard, and features their take on Tower Defense, while the second one is called Escape the Kyln, and is a procedurally generated dungeon crawler that centers around the Guardians of the Galaxy.

With all those options and more constantly being announced, the future of Infinity is looking bright.

DOCTOR WHO - Delightful Interview with Peter Capaldi and Disappointing TV Spot

$

Even though Doctor Who totally snubbed Comic-Con this weekend, there are a couple pieces of publicity to keep you on the edge of your seat while you wait for the Season 8 premiere later this month. The first is a delightful interview with new Doctor Peter Capaldi that ran in London’s Sunday Times (unfortunately behind a paywall), the second is a disappointing new TV spot.

The most important thing we learn in the interview is that the Doctor is being played by a true fan; Capaldi claims that his earliest memory of the show is the Daleks surfacing in 1964’s "The Dalek Invasion of the Earth." He wasn’t bothered by the low production values, either. “Everybody slags it off now, but these programs weren’t made to be viewed over and over again. When you just consumed them in that way, at the time, they were magical.” He also has strong opinions on the Mondasian Cybermen introduced in 1966 (the modern Cybermen are from a parallel universe). “There is a conflict among fans, but I’m trying to get the Mondasians back.” You should note that the interviewer describes his voice as “grave” for that one.

When producers cast Capaldi, they were deliberately moving away from the trend of casting younger and cuter with each regeneration. Capaldi wanted to move away from another trend as well. “There’ll be no flirting, that’s for sure. It’s not what this Doctor’s concerned with. It’s quite a fun relationship, but no, I did call and say, ‘I want no Papa-Nicole* moments.’ I think there was a bit of tension with that at first, but I was absolutely adamant.” That news will please two groups: those who think that Tennant's tenure was sullied by all the endless moping over Rose Tyler, and those who are sick of huge age gaps between leading men and their romantic interests. At 55, Capaldi is tied for oldest Doctor ever, and his companion is played by Jenna Coleman, who is 28, young enough to be his daughter.

When asked about Mark Gatiss’ statement that the new incarnation of the Doctor “has a madness in his eyes,” Capaldi replied, “All that’s true, but he’s also joyful. One thing the show does well is balance the epic and the domestic. You can go from the edge of the universe to a pedestrian precinct. This Doctor loves watching stars being born in Andromeda; he’s also thrilled to see litter blowing across the supermarket car park at dawn.” Capaldi seems to have a bit of that quality himself. “When I was Doctor elect, before it was announced, I used to go to Forbidden Planet [a sci-fi superstore in the West End of London], and just hang around. It would amuse me that people wouldn’t know they were standing next to the next Doctor Who. That’s all past now. I can’t do it any more.”

Capaldi sounds like a delight. I know I’m excited to see him in action. I’m pretty sure the doctor is in good hands.

I am less confident about the hands in charge of the ads for the eighth season, given this extraordinarily lame tv spot. I have no idea what it is supposed to be telling us. Is it supposed to be really kooky that he’s on top of the TARDIS? I don’t know. Boring ads aside, the Doctor returns on August 23, and my DVR is set.

*Note to our American readers, Capaldi seems to be referring to this ad campaign.

Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo Tease Reason for Hulk VS. Hulkbuster Battle

$

Since ABC aired their Marvel documentary earlier this year, we’ve known that Tony Stark, with the help of his Hulkbuster armor, would be taking on the Hulk in Avengers: Age of Ultron. The concept art above does little justice to how the actual showdown is shaping up so far — we got a glimpse of it in the Comic-Con footage. The extended Comic-Con preview confirmed that the Hulkbuster armor, like in the comics, encases Stark’s regular Iron Man armor. The studio put the Hulkbuster arm on display at their convention floor booth.

The big question is though, why are Iron Man and Hulk fighting at all? The last couple of times we saw the two heroes, their bromance was in full bloom. Tony Stark and Bruce Banner literally rode off into the sunset together at the end of The Avengers, and at the end of Iron Man 3, Banner was on hand to attempt to help Stark deal with his PTSD. In an interview with EW, Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo gave an update on the “Science Bros” and their relationship, and teased a possible reason for the upcoming superhero showdown.

Downey Jr. told EW:

"Stark has set Banner up to be able to continue his good works in Stark Tower [and] Tony has a project of his own. So, it's one of those things where it's like your second development team 'Hey, how is it going over there, that looks really nice and green; can I talk to you about this other idea I have.’ And it winds up not being such a good idea.
"Bruce is dubious as to the moral psychology of this project idea of Tony's. And It's nice because it sets up a little bit of tension between us."

Rufallo added:

“That pays off later. It sort of blows up.”

It’d be easy to assume that they are referring to the Hulk vs Hulkbuster battle, but they could very well be talking about some other non-superpowered/armorless confrontation. You can watch the full interview below and judge their answers for yourself, but we’d also like to offer a couple of insights. In the Comic-Con footage we were shown, there was a quick shot of Chris Hemsworth's Thor under some kind of spell, grabbing Tony Stark by the throat and lifting him up. Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch is likely the person behind this, as it has been stated before that she and Quicksilver begin the film as antagonists. Scarlet’s ability to bend reality could be the cause for both Thor and Hulk going after Stark. Since Banner seemed quite in control of the monster inside him during the battle of New York, that seems a more likely scenario for the Hulk and Iron Man face-off. We'll know for sure when the movie hits theaters May 1st, 2015... or when they spoil it in a TV spot or trailer months before its release.

Now that we’re all home from the orgiastic splendors of Comic-Con, it’s time to have a reasoned discussion about the metaphysical underpinnings of cosplay. Basically, it’s time for liberal arts majors to reach back to their Critical Theory classes to wonder, “Is Cosplay a Form of Theater?” The PBS Idea Channel takes a crack at this one in a fantastic video essay, and for them, the answer (SPOILER!) is a resounding yes. I was going to write a bunch of Humanities 201/Critical Theory 350 level bull about cave paintings and Shakespeare’s As You Like It with a bit of Jane Austen thrown in, but you know what? Just watch the video. It hits all the right notes while being funny and entertaining, and it has gifs and popular memes, whereas my version would be B- level at best. And while you're at it, check out the other Idea Channel videos. They're pretty great.

THE JUNGLE BOOK — Christopher Walken and Giancarlo Esposito Join Cast

Christopher Walken and Breaking Bad's Giancarlo Esposito have joined the cast of Disney's live-action adaptation of The Jungle Book. Walken will voice the ape King Louie, and Giancarlo Esposito will voice Akela the wolf. They join Ben Kingsley as Bagheera, Idris Elba as Shere Khan, Scarlett Johansson as Kaa, and Lupita Nyong’o as Raksha.

Much to the joy of many GeekTyrant readers, director Jon Favreau has cast young unknown actor Neel Sethi as Mowgli, who will be the only actor to appear on screen.

It's interesting how advanced CGI has become with movies like the recent Planet of The Apes series, the visual effects are completely immersive. No word yet on how they will animate the animals, I'm just hoping we see Walken in one of those gray motion capture suits doing some soft shoe.

The Jungle Book will inspire man-cubs everywhere October 9, 2015 (USA).

Full-Size Hot Wheels Darth Vader Car

One of the many head turners on the San Diego Comic-Con floor this year was Hot Wheels and Star Wars’ Darthcar, a full-size and “fully functional” vehicle inspired by Darth Vader. The shiny black beauty was built to help promote Hot Wheels’ upcoming line of matchbox character cars that are due out in October. The car is accented with many nods to the Sith Lord, from red lightsaber side pipes to a grill inspired by his breathing apparatus — for some odd reason, though, it looks more like a combination of the ‘60s-era and Burton-era Batmobiles.

Hot Wheels designer Bryan Benedict designed many of the Star Wars 1:64 scale cars that will be released, including the Darthcar. Bryan told HotWheelsCollectors that we can expect the series to include classic Star Wars characters, as well as new ones from the upcoming J.J. Abrams film.

“There is a Boba Fett car and I’m pretty sure you’re gonna like it. Boba Fett is my personal favorite of all the cars I’ve done. We’re doing a lot of cars. There’s something like 24 or 26 different cars total. There will also be characters from the new movie coming out.”

Check out the pics and video of the 1:1 and 1:64 scale Darth Vader cars below, and experience the horsepower of the Dark Side.

Paul Bettany Talks about the Vision in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

So, the best news we ever heard was back in February when we learned that Paul Bettany would play the Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Bettany has this weird quality of easygoing intensity, and no matter what kind of terrible movie he is in he reads every line like it’s Shakespeare. He is (was?) great as JARVIS, but we’re excited to see him in actual action. Our colleagues at Superhero Hype recently interviewed him about his role in the Avengers sequel. Here are some highlights:

On getting the part:

For a long while I discovered, having playing JARVIS, I wasn’t allowed to then play another character and Joss Whedon and I got on very well and he looked for a way to make that work and found it, though I can’t say what the relationship is between Vision and JARVIS.

On what makes the Vision interesting:

The thing that appealed to me is that this sort of nascent creature being born, being both omnipotent and totally naive, the sort of danger of that and complex nature of a thing being born that is that powerful and that created in a second and the choices he makes morally are really complex and interesting. They’ve really managed to maintain all of that, the old image I love is of him crying, I think it’s really expressed kind of beautifully in this “Avengers” film.

On JARVIS and the Vision’s different voices:

I can’t talk about that. It happens entirely naturally on set and those things are hard to analyze and there are absolute differences clearly. I worked on it, but the interaction with other people and actors, but the director changes thing. He is not J.A.R.V.I.S. and he is not a child of Ultron, he is the Vision. That weirdly happened on its own. He’s J.A.R.V.I.S. but yoked.

On his relationship with Scarlet Witch:

Protective.

On the Vision’s relationship with the Avengers:

It’s been a really lovely working experience. In the plot there was a lot of distrust and that has to be navigated by the [Vision] and he does it in a quite extraordinarily shocking way. It’s a real roof raiser of a moment.

On the Vision’s abilities:

We’ve talked about how he’s incredibly good at punching, which is key. He has the ability to change his density and that is … that’s awesome and exploited brilliantly by Joss in some cool moments when Vision is able to do something that is otherworldly. And he’s discovering all as he goes along.

On working with Whedon:

No time have I had a movie, except maybe with Peter Weir, where I felt certain someone had a better idea what I should be doing. You feel very safe – when he says ‘I think it should be more like this’ you go ‘I get it’ and even if I don’t you do it his way. And he’s incredibly relaxed and having the time of his life.

Ah Robin, not just any videogame, but indeed THE videogame.

It is extremely tough, but I attempted to channel my inner Adam West with that line, and it seems I failed. Those who look for any opportunity to get more Batman '66 in their life have reason to cheer however, as Warner Brothers announced that the much loved '66 era will get its very own part of Lego Batman 3, complete with one of the most iconic versions of the Batmobile. I can't tell you how giddy I was that they got West to voice his take on the Dark Knight, but  66's take on Batgirl, Catwoman, Joker, Penguin, the Riddler, and even Alfred all are coming along for the ride to boot.

Combat will also be sprinkled with all the BAM, POW, and KAPLOW's that you remember from the show, and here is hoping that at some point there is a mission with Batman running along a dock trying to get rid of a bomb. It simply must happen. To say I'm enthused is an understatement, and for a little something extra you can see some of the behind the scenes with the voice cast of the game in the special trailer below.
