The History of San Diego Comic-Con - Video Presentation

the-history-of-san-diego-comic-con-video-presentation

GeekTyrant is here in San Diego again for Comic-Con, and it's an event we're always excited to be covering. I love coming to Comic-Con, and it's been really cool seeing how much it has grown over the years. It first started in 1970, and it has grown into an unbelievably huge geek event. Who would have thought that it would get this big? Especially when you look at that photo above of that crazy big crowd trying to get into the con.

Here's a great video presentation by Super Comic Fun Time that gives us a little history on San Diego Comic-Con and its humble beginnings.

What started as a small sci-fi convention for a group of fans has grown into the pop culture event of the year, influencing every form of entertainment and drawing in over 130,000 attendees. So where did this cultural phenomenon begin? Check out this video to see how this event transformed over the years from a small basement to a massive & epic four day event!

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII Star John Boyega Teases Marvel Role

Star Wars: Episode VII and Attack the Block star John Boyega took to Twitter to heavily tease a Marvel character that he might play. With Comic-Con upon us and Marvel planning to make some announcements at their panel, could this be one of them? Boyega tweeted the following recently:

"Marvel role? ....hehehe ... I'm dam right aiming for it"

He then added:

"Currently booking flight to wakanda"

For those you you not familiar with Wakanda, it is the home country of the Black Panther, a character that has been rumored to be in development at Marvel Studios for years. Will Boyega take on the role of Black Panther? Or is this just wishful thinking on the actor's part?

I could easily see him in the role, so I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up with the part. I think he'd make an awesome Black Panther. There's a good chance a Black Panther movie will fill one of those release dates Marvel recently announced.

I guess we'll find out soon enough! We'll make sure to keep you updated on what goes down at the Marvel panel on Saturday!

James Gunn on the "Pure Joy" of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY's Post-Credits Scene

I always enjoy the post-credits scenes that are plugged into all the Marvel movies, and of course, we're going to get one with James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy. Don't worry, I'm not going to spoil it for you here, but Gunn does talk about the pure joy of it, and has also said that it will "add a new element to Marvel."

During an interview with Total Film the director was asked about the scene, and this is what he told them:

"Oh we have a post-credit sequence for you! Oh, do we ever! Yes, well we are connected, first of all we are connected…because of certain characters… but we have a post-credit sequence that’s all our own! That in all honestly we have just been doing the past few days so I think it’s going to be a great deal of fun for people."

When asked to sum up the scene in one word, he replied,

"You don’t even want to know what it is! Pure joy, pure joy, that’s two words!"

I'll take it, and I can't wait to see it!

Oakoak is an artist going around France and creatively crafting art pieces on the city streets. What so awesome about his work is that they interact with the environments around them. The outcome is these pieces that are brilliantly fun and inventive.

According to Elite Daily, the artist calls himself a "pen pusher' because he works a clerical job during the day, but brightens up the streets of France with his art when he's not doing that. Check out a bunch of his pieces below.

Inside Guillermo Del Toro's Crimson Peak and Pacific Rim Comic-Con Experience

inside-guillermo-del-toros-crimson-peek-and-pacific-rim-comic-con-experience1

If you are lucky enough to be at Comic-Con this year, make sure to head on over to the Legendary Pictures booth because it's packed full of really cool stuff! Director Guillermo del Toro is presenting a couple things there that are definitely worth checking out. One is for his upcoming horror film Crimson Peak, the other is an Oculus experience that's been created for Pacific Rim.

I had a chance to experience these on preview night, and it was a extremely cool experience! First of all, I got a personal tour of the Crimson Peak exhibit from Del Toro himself, and I have to say that was one of the coolest experiences I've ever had. I got to chat with him about his upcoming movie for a bit, and this gothic haunted house horror film he's creating is going to be batshit insane! They basically built a spooky, cool, small section of the haunted house in the film inside the booth along with some props. He was very excited about this project, and I can't wait to see the teaser trailer for it in Hall H this coming Saturday.

Here's some additional information on what the experience entails:

Legendary's attractions at this year's show will allow fans to step right into the mind of Guillermo del Toro through an exclusive virtual reality experience - during which they will train to become a Jaeger pilot in Pacific Rim - and an interactive Gothic Gallery that will take fans right into the haunted world of Crimson Peak, which is set to open in theaters on October 16th, 2015.

A physical experience handcrafted by Guillermo del Toro himself, the Crimson Peak Gothic Gallery will allows fans to get a glimpse behind the curtain of the movie and an early tease of the ultimate haunted house. Designed in the look of one of the sets of the movie, the Gothic Gallery is a living breathing gallery of curiosities that includes props, costumes, and an atmospheric soundscape designed by Academy Award winner Randy Thom.

The other part of this attraction was the Pacific Rim Oculus virtual reality experience. I've never played around with this Oculus thing before I did this, but holy crap, it was awesome! I was completely immersed in the world of Pacific Rim as a Jaeger pilot. I had never experienced anything like this before, and this truly is the future of video games and other forms of entertainment. I was kind of blown away by it all. When you look around in this thing you can see the whole environment around you. When I even looked down at my hands and feat all I saw was me wearing that Jaeger pilot suit, which was sweet as hell.  Here's some more information on that greatness:

Pacific Rim: Jaeger Pilot is the next evolution of the universe Legendary is creating with director Guillermo del Toro. Created by the leading pioneers of virtual reality, Oculus VR, the attraction delivers a new benchmark in virtual reality experiences as fans will step into a fully-realized Jaeger Combat Simulator and experience what it feels like to pilot a 250-story robot. Created with original film assets from Industrial Light & Magic and developed within Unreal Engine 4, Pacific Rim: Jaeger Pilot provides a thrilling first-person battle between Gipsy Danger and the kaiju codenamed Knifehead.

Everyone who completes the simulation will sign-up to ‘Join the Fight’ and be awarded their own personalized Jaeger Pilot badge, paving the way for the future of the franchise.

This is a must attend attraction for anyone who is a fan of Del toro and the films that he makes! It's definitely worth it. Check out some more photos below of the booth courtesy of Legendary Pictures.

Screen Shot 2014-07-24 at 10.03.49 AM.png

So Universal Pictures decided to released their first full trailer for the Fifty Shades of Grey movie during San Diego Comic-Con. I just find that weird for some reason. I've hardly posted anything on this movie since it doesn't really interest me, but since it's a full trailer, and I know there's an audience out there for this thing, I figured… what the hell? So if any of you are interested or curious about what this thing actually is, you'll find the synopsis and trailer below. After I watched it… I'm still not interested.

Fifty Shades of Grey is the hotly anticipated film adaptation of the bestselling book that has become a global phenomenon. Since its release, the “Fifty Shades” trilogy has been translated into 51 languages worldwide and sold more than 100 million copies in e-book and print—making it one of the biggest and fastest-selling book series ever.
Stepping into the roles of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, who have become iconic to millions of readers, are Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson
Joining Dornan and Johnson in the cast are Luke Grimes as Elliot, Christian’s brother; Victor Rasuk as José, Anastasia’s close friend; Eloise Mumford as Kate, Anastasia’s best friend and roommate; Marcia Gay Harden as Dr. Grace Trevelyan Grey, Christian’s mother; Rita Ora as Mia, Christian’s sister; Max Martini as Taylor, Christian’s bodyguard; Callum Keith Rennie as Ray, Anastasia’s stepfather; Jennifer Ehle as Carla, Anastasia’s mother; and Dylan Neal as Bob, Carla’s husband.

Fifty Shades of Grey was directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and the screenplay for the film is by Kelly Marcel. The movie will be released on February 11th, 2015.

Here's a cool vintage photo that reacently surfaced featuring Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford auditioning for George LucasStar Wars back in the 1970s. This is where it all started, and I'm so happy that they are a part of the the new Star Wars trilogy currently in production. It's going to be so freakin' awesome to see these characters back up on the big screen again after all these years. Thanks to Classic Star Wars for the photo!

Kevin Feige Discusses Josh Brolin's Thanos

During an interview with Collider, Kevin Feige talked about why Josh Brolin makes the perfect Thanos in the Marvel universe. He also revealed that Brolin didn't only voice the character, but they also shot the actor on set. Regarding the casting of the universal villain, Feige said,

“We were looking at a wish list of ‘Wouldn’t it be great if’ names, and his name was on it. You look at his face and the performances he gives — he could be Thanos without any effects. He has that kind of face and that kind of gravitas to it.”

He then says that Brolin was an easy sell on the project, and that they wanted him to be more than just the voice.

“We reached out to him and it was one of those things that does not happen all the time, but when it does it’s very nice, where he was totally intrigued. We ran it by [Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn] who loved it, ran it by [Joss Whedon] who loved it because Thanos is in this universe because of Avengers. Then we shot him and recorded for it. We wanted somebody to be more than just the voice. Josh did the performance as well.”

I think we can all agree that Brolin is the most badass actor choice they could have made for Thanos. I can't wait to see how this character is portrayed in Guardians of the Galaxy!

The cape and cowl that Ben Affleck will be wearing in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is currently on display at San Diego Comic-Con. One of the first things I realized upon seeing the costume was, "Well, Batman won't be able to turn his head again." That's ok though because the suit really does look freakin' spectacular. I'd wear it… everyday!

10 Cartoon Voices That Are Actually Impressions of Other Actors

0
0

In music there are only 12 notes, so it's no wonder so many songs sound the same. But what about someone's voice? The way someone speaks is not bound by any kind of scale or music theory, rather it's the sum a person’s upbringing, their physicality, and their personality. So why do so many cartoon characters sound so eerily familiar? In this list we highlight 10 cartoon characters whose voices (and often their likenesses) are based on other actors. We also mention 5 other cartoon voices that are impressions in the bonus sections of related entries. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, these actors have been thoroughly praised by some of the best.

Homer Simpson (The Simpsons) - Walter Matthau

Over the past 3 decades The Simpsons has been on the air, America’s favorite family has gone through many changes. Aside from the quality of the animation, the most noticeable difference to audiences is likely the voice of the Simpson clan’s loveable oaf of a father, Homer J. Simpson. In early seasons of the show, Homer sounded like Walter Matthau. However, as the show progressed and the character evolved, Homer’s emotions became more erratic and unpredictable, so Dan Castellaneta, the voice behind Homer and a cavalcade of other Simpsons characters, found a place deeper in the throat for the voice that made it easier to yell.

In the interview below, Castellaneta explains how he auditioned for the role, and goes into detail about how the voice evolved from a Walter Matthau impression into what we know and recognize today.

Bonus: Castellaneta has also stated that he drew inspiration from actors for two of his other well-known Simpson characters. The always down on his luck Gil Gunderson is based on Shelley "The Machine" Levene from Glengarry Glen Ross, who was played by Walter Matthau’s Odd Couple and Grumpy Old Men co-star Jack Lemmon. Groundskeeper Willie is taken from a Scottish character Dave Thomas did for SCTV.

Bugs Bunny (Looney Toons) - Clark Gable

Originally voiced by the godfather of voice acting, Mel Blanc, Bugs Bunny has become one of the most recognizable and beloved cartoon characters in history. He also just so happens to be an impression of one of the most recognizable and beloved actors of Hollywood’s Golden Age. The 1934 film It Happened One Night swept the major categories at The Academy Awards that year, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay. Clark Gable’s Oscar-winning performance in the film would go on to be heavily used as the basis for Bugs Bunny, who made his debut six years later. In this clip from It Happened One Night, it is easy to see where Bugs Bunny’s leisurely lean, fast talking, and nonchalant carrot chewing came from.

Bonus: In Looney Toons director Friz Freleng’s unpublished memoirs, he not only points out Gable’s character as an influence for Bugs, but also mentions two other It Happened One Night characters as being the inspirations for the gun-toting Yosemite Sam and the suave skunk Pepé LePew, Alexander Andrews (Walter Connolly) and King Westley (Jameson Thomas), respectively.

Chris Griffin (Family Guy) -  Ted Levine

According to Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, every voice actor who auditioned for Chris Griffin, the middle child of the Griffin family, would look at the character design and come in and do a “surfer dude voice.” Actor Seth Green, who, along with many notable roles in film, had done voiceovers for Batman: The Animated Series and Batman Beyond, came in and also tried a similar “what’s up dude” take on Chris before asking if he could “try something silly.” He proceeded to do an impression of Buffalo Bill, the killer from Silence of the Lambs played by Ted Levine, and won the part. In the video below, Green talks about how he and a friend started doing the Buffalo Bill voice to make each other laugh and talks about the joke in the pilot episode that made him want to audition for Family Guy.

Brain (Pinky and the Brain) - Orson Welles

The human inspirations for Pinky and the Brain were writers Eddie Fitzgerald and Tom Minton, whom creator Tom Ruegger worked with on Tiny Toon Adventures. Pinky’s catchphrases “narf” and “egad” were directly inspired by how Fitzgerald excitedly described sound effects when pitching a story or sequence. Brain’s voice and mannerisms were likewise to be patterned after Minton, but that all changed when when Maurice LaMarche was brought in to read for the character. Lamarche mistakenly assumed the design of Brain was modeled after Orson Welles, a voice he was known for doing during sound checks, and booked the role by doing a voice he has described in DVD commentaries as being "65% Orson Welles, 35% Vincent Price."

In the video below, Lamarche explains how he learned to do Welles’ voice by repeatedly listening to and memorizing a now notorious tape of outtakes from a commercial Welles did for frozen peas. He then hilariously reenacts the whole reading, hissy fits and all.

Moe Szyslak (The Simpsons) - Al Pacino

In addition to his Emmy win for the television movie Tuesdays with Morrie, Hank Azaria has taken home three Emmys for his voice work on The Simpsons. Those awards came specifically for his roles as the Kwik-E Mart clerk Apu, Comic Book Guy, and the bartender Moe. When Azaria came in to audition for the role of the Moe Szyslak, he did an impression of Al Pacino, but was told that the voice needed to be gravelly. Azaria told THR, “If you make Al Pacino from Dog Day Afternoon gravelly, you get Moe.”

In the full interview below, Azaria talks about the play that he originally used the Pacino impression for and demonstrates how he turned that into Moe.

Bonus: During the second year of The Simpsons, Hank Azaria gave the writers a list of all the impressions and accents he could do. The one voice he said he explicitly requested to be able to do for the show was his Jerry Lewis impression, which would become the voice of Springfield’s nerdy scientist Professor Frink. The real Jerry Lewis would later guest star as Professor Frink’s father.

Betty Boop - Helen Kane

America’s first cartoon sex symbol, Betty Boop starred in over 100 cartoons throughout the 1930s and represented the carefree days of jazz. A caricature of singer-actress Helen Kane, the character first appeared as an anthropomorphic french poodle voiced by Margie Hines (also known for being the voice of Olive Oyl). Two years later she would be changed to a human. Betty Boop’s similarities to Kane — from her curly black hair and baby squeak voice, down to the catchphrase “Boop-Oop-A-Doop” — weren’t seen by Kane as a flattering impression, but rather a blatant imitation that exploited her image and were detrimental to her career. Kane would go on to sue Betty Boop creator Max Fleischer. Though the judge would rule against her, citing that both Kane and Betty Boop bore resemblance to Paramount top-star Clara Bow, this video comparison clearly shows how Kane’s voice and mannerisms were used as reference for the cartoon character.

Wakko Warner (Animaniacs) - Ringo Starr, John Lennon

When he came in to audition for the fun-loving Wakko Warner, Jess Harnell had very little voice work under his belt, but he was an accomplished impressionist. Harnell initially pitched a “crazy cartoon” voice, which earned him a callback, and was then asked by voice director Andrea Romano if he could try impersonating musicians, including Elvis and all four of The Beatles. He landed the part with his impressions of the legendary English rock group. Harnell has said that the voice started off lower as Ringo Starr, but later evolved into more of a “tiny” John Lennon “going through puberty.”

In this Making of Animaniacs documentary hosted by Maurice Lamarche, members of the cast and crew, including Harnell, Romano, Rob Paulsen (Yakko Warner), Tress MacNeille (Dot Warner), and many more, go in-depth about the characters and creative process of the show.

Zapp Brannigan (Futurama) - Phil Hartman

After Phil Hartman’s death in 1998, Simpsons creator Matt Groening retired the actor’s characters and dedicated an episode to him. Before his passing, Hartman was also intended to play Zap Brannigan on Futurama, another cartoon series Groening was developing. Along with naming the show’s main character, Philip J. Fry, after the late comedian, Groening also tapped Billy West, a longtime friend of Hartman, to take over the role of the self absorbed military officer. West, who was already performing triple duty on Futurama as the voices for Fry, Prof. Farnsworth, and Dr. Zoidberg, would use Hartman’s habit of channeling “big dumb announcers” as a direct influence for his take on Brannigan. In the video below, you can listen to West talk about how he met Hartman, who convinced West to move out to California to further pursue a career in voice acting.

The Flintstones - The Cast of The Honeymooners

Hanna-Barbera’s The Flintstones was the first animated primetime show, and it paved the way for shows like The Simpsons, Family Guy, and South Park. The most popular show at the time of its inception was The Honeymooners, which starred and was created by Jackie Gleason. The Honeymooners wasn’t just used as a template for the cartoon show’s sitcom format, but the cast’s likenesses, voices, and character dynamics were all closely replicated. Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble’s voices in particular were clearly impressions of Ralph Kramden (Gleason) and Ed Norton (Art Carney). Alan Reed, the voice of Fred, had even done voice-overs for Gleason early in his career. Gleason was told by his lawyers that he could “probably have The Flintstones pulled right off the air.” They also cautioned though that he probably wouldn’t want to be the man responsible for taking away a show beloved by children and adults alike.

Even though William Hanna has admitted that The Honeymooners greatly influenced their cartoon series, Joe Barbera states in the video below that, while flattered by the comparison, the shows are very different. His argument is pretty thin, but he does say the classic sitcom was one of his favorite shows, and goes into their original concepts for the show and how hard it was to sell the idea of a modern stone age family to networks.

Just for Fun: John Candy, Eugene Levy, Joe Flaherty, and Jayne Eastwood argue about whether or not The Flintstones is a rip-off of The Honeymooners in this amusing SCTV sketch.

Zack Snyder recently tweeted this photo of Henry Cavill all decked out as Star Wars Sith Lord. The caption came with the hashtag "Super Jedi," but judging by the red lightsaber and dark cloak, I'd have to say he's more of a super Sith Lord. You can even see the Superman costume underneath the cloak as well. Snyder was probably just have some fun when he unleashed this photo on the world, and he's not trying to tell us that Cavill is going to be in a new Star Wars movie. Just enjoy the geeky photo!

Simon Kinberg on X-MEN: APOCALYPSE and GAMBIT

simon-kinberg-on-x-men-apocalypse-four-horsemen-and-gambit

During an interview with Latino Review, X-Men screenwriter Simon Kinberg talked a little bit about what is coming for X-Men: Apocalypse, including some details about the Four Horsemen, as well as the status of Channing Tatum's Gambit.

The writer was asked if he sees the X-Men franchise as being a single narrative like Marvel Studios' different phases, and this was how he answered:

"We think about these X-Men movies as spread over – X-Men: First Class, Days of Future Past to Apocalypse was imagined as a trilogy for us. It’s the Origin stories in some ways of Charles, Raven, Hank and Eric and we will be settling things up in Apocalypse that will be generating new stories. We look at it globally as to where to mutants fit into the world. That’s why we jump from the 60’s to the 70’s and now the 80’s. We really want to be able to track the progression of the world and where do mutants fit in that world. It’s a pretty radical thing to do in any movie but certainly in a superhero franchise where you are jumping a decade each time you make a film. The reason that it is globally is that we wanted to be able to track the impact of mutants and the emergence of mutants into the world. Personally, we are very clear from the beginning as to how Charles, Eric and Raven especially dovetail, duck and weave in and out of each others lives. We were building, in some ways, a trilogy that is a story of three people; a brother, a little sister and another man who comes, in some ways, as a brother and how that sister leaves with the new brother. The war for that [sister's] soul between these two men defines First Class, Days of Future Past and Apocalypse . That’s a larger story we are telling even though each of those films is its own coherent and complete film. You can look at the arc of those three characters almost like a television show arcing over three complete episodes."

Kinberg goes on to say that it will "take advantage of the historical context of the 80s." They are covering a lot of historical ground here with these movies. It will be interesting to see what aspects of history they pull from that era to implement into the story they are going to tell. He was then asked about Tatum playing Gambit and if he'll be introduced in a team movie before getting his own solo movie or vice versa.

"I genuinely don’t know the answer to that question. It’s something we are all talking about whether it would be good for Gambit to be in a mainline X-Men movie or he would be in his own stand-alone movie potentially one day to be able to be in another X-Men movie after his Gambit movie introduces him. I really don’t know the answer. I don’t think there is a hard and fast rule which way is better. I think both ways have worked and I think actually the real question will be is there a role that is strong and specific enough for Gambit in a mainline X-Men movie whether it be Apocalypse or [a] future X-Men movie that would be the right way to introduce the character. You don’t want to stick characters in these movies and manufacture something for them to do. You want the movie to tell you that it needs another character or ideally it needs this specific character."

As for the Four Horsemen in X-Men: Apocalypse, he was coaxed into giving a little bit of info saying:

"I will tell you this and obviously there are a lot of different versions of the [Horsemen] over the books, and this will not reveal any of the identities so I apologize in advance. I will let you know that our choosing of the [Horsemen] was something that we, Bryan and myself took very, very seriously and did only after an exhaustive review of all the different [Horsemen], both in the comics and the cartoons who have at one point or another fallen under Apocalypse."

We've still got a ways to go before we see anything from this movie. But it sounds like they know what they want it to be, and I'm sure it will be awesome.

"Good things come to those who work their asses off."

Jake Gyllenhaal is looking like an insane and creepily motivated person in this new trailer for his upcoming thriller Nightcrawler. Gyllenhaal is an extremely talented actor, and this looks like it's going to be a really solid and intense film.

The story is set in the "nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles," and Gyllenhaal plays Lou Bloom, "a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism.  Finding a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, Lou muscles into the cut-throat, dangerous realm of nightcrawling -- where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars and cents.  Aided by Rene Russo as Nina, a veteran of the blood-sport that is local TV news, Lou thrives.  In the breakneck, ceaseless search for footage, he becomes the star of his own story."

The movie also stars Bill Paxton, and the movie is set for release on October 17th 2014.
