http://insidemovies.ew.com/2014/07/07/first-look-don-cheadle-as-miles-davis-in-biopic-miles-ahead/

This is our first look at Don Cheadle as Miles Davis in the biopic that he's also directing, called Miles Ahead. This is the first film that Cheadle has directed, and it has been a passion project of his that he has been working on for the last decade. He's been a fan of Davis since he was a little kid. It all started with the legendary jazz trumpeter’s album Porgy and Bess.

The movie will follow the period leading up to Davis' 1969 jazz-rock fusion recording In a Silent Way. The movie also stars Ewan McGregor, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Emayatzy Corinealdi, and it's set to start shooting this week in Cincinnati.

In a interview with EW, Cheadle spoke about the film and offered up the following information on the story:

"The construction of the movie is the parallel story of Miles in 1979 at the end of this quiet period he was in, the five-year stretch of time when he wasn’t playing and performing and recording, juxtaposed against the 10-year period where he was with Francis Taylor Davis, who, at the time, was the love of his life and his muse."

When asked what parts of Davis' story resonated with him most, he replied:

"Well, the thing about Miles Davis was that he thought of himself as a social musician who played social music and didn’t want to be boxed in and defined. He could recognize talent that very few could and not only recognized it, but gave the people with whom he played room to develop and grow and stretch out and find their own voices. That’s why he spawned so many leaders.

"Everyone who played with Miles’ band became a leader and most of them went on to be leaders of bands and have long recording careers because he gave them the room to create and demanded that they create. He’s the guy, if he heard you rehearsing your solo and then you played that onstage, you were fired. I don’t pay you to rehearse, I don’t pay you to rehearse, I pay you to rehearse live in front of people. Don’t bring your polished solo out, go out and go crazy."

Cheadle is a very talented guy, and it will be great to see what he does with this film project. He definitely looks great in the role!

Gus Van Sant to Direct Adaptation of the Anime DEATH NOTE?

Three years ago it was announced that a live action feature film adaptation of the anime and Japanese manga Death Note would be directed by Iron Man 3's Shane Black. It seems Black has dropped out of the project, and Good Will Hunting director Gus Van Sant could be stepping in to take his place.

These are two very different directors with very different styles, and I never imagined that Van Sant would ever do an anime adaptation. The guy is very talented, he likes to experiment, and maybe this is just something he would like to try his hand at.

The news comes from The Tracking Board, and they give no reason as to why Black left. I can only imagine that if he's been working on this for three years and nothing has come together that he'd be ready to move on. Then there's also the fact that he has been hired to write and direct a Predator sequel for Fox.

I've been on an anime kick recently, and I actually watched the first episode of Death Note yesterday and I loved it! The manga series was written by Tsugumi Ohba and artist Takeshi Obata and it centers around a high school student named Light Yagami, who finds a book called the Death Note which has the power to kill anyone whose name is written within it. Here's a more detailed description of the story:

Light Yagami is an ace student with great prospects - and he's bored out of his mind. But all that changes when he finds the Death Note, a notebook dropped by a rogue Shinigami death god. Any human whose name is written in the notebook dies, and now Light has vowed to use the power of the Death Note to rid the world of evil. But when criminals begin dropping dead, the authorities send the legendary detective L to track down the killer. With L hot on his heels, will Light lose sight of his noble goal...or his life? Light tests the boundaries of the Death Note powers as L and the police begin to close in. Luckily Light's father is the head of the Japanese National Police Agency and leaves vital information about the case lying around the house. With access to his father's files, Light can keep one step ahead of the authorities. But who is the strange man following him, and how can Light guard against enemies whose names he doesn't know?

If Van Sant actually does come on board to direct this movie, it will be incredibly interesting to see how he brings it to life. It's really hard to imagine what he might do with it because he changes up his filmmaking style, and is always trying new things. He is currently working on a movie called Sea of Trees, with Matthew McConaughey and Ken Watanabe.

Star Wars.com released a video featuring a real life version of Chopper, a little droid who will be a part of the new animated series Star Wars: Rebels. The droid was brought to life by some of the wizards over at Lucasfilm, and they even bring R2-D2 out to meet him. Here's a little information that they offered:

Chopper is the grumpy, lazy, yet ultimately heroic astromech droid of the upcoming Star Wars Rebels animated series -- and Lucasfilm has brought him to life. In this new video, go behind the scenes to see how a fully functioning Chopper was designed, built, and finally, introduced to his creators and to the world.

It's always fun seeing these iconic droids come to life.

FORTNITE - The Modern Take on Playing Fort Gets A New Trailer

There are other games where you can build your own fortress or castle, but Fortnite aims to create a system that combines ease of use and flexibility to let the player build on the fly. Sure it's a plus to actually plan out your structure from time to time, but if you would rather just go out and start building, Fortnite wants to accommodate you.

Fortnite is a big departure for Epic Games, the studio that is synonymous with Gears of War and the Unreal franchise, but I'm all for it as long as the execution and sound design from their Gears Series comes along for the ride. The game has a certain fun and carefree charm about it, and the gameplay looks chaotic but fun. It all comes down to how smoothly the on the fly building mechanics work, and how loose the combat is. In the gameplay footage you can see some of the combat, and while it looks fun it does appear to still need some tightening up. Hopefully there are some long distance weapons in play as well, as I can't wait to build myself a giant sniper perch, only accessible by a door which leads to a bridge which leads to another tower which has access to my sniper tower via carrier pigeon.

No mention of the pigeons yet, but peep the trailer (above) and some screens (below), and if you're interested (and have a PC) you can sign up for upcoming alpha access now.

Trailer for the Multi Story Film REACH ME with Sylvester Stallone and Thomas Jane

This is the trailer for a melodramatic looking movie called Reach Me. The film features an ensemble cast, and the story follows a group of people who end up all being connected by a self-help book written by a mysterious author. I guess one of the best films to compare this to would be Paul Haggis' Oscar winning movie Crash.

The impressive cast includes Sylvester Stallone, Terry Crewes, Kelsey Grammer, Thomas Jane, Kevin Connolly, Kyra Sedgwick, Ryan Kwanten, Tom Berenger, Tom Sizemore, Cary Elwes, and Nelly.

The film was written and directed by John Herzfeld (2 Days in the Valley), and he crammed a lot of stories into one movie. The movie is set to be released on October 24th, and it definitely looks interesting.

Limo Ride looks like a movie that is seriously going to be bat-shit insane. It is a documentary that tells the true story that is described as one of the wildest nights ever. It centers on ten friends and a limo ride that leads to an unbelievable night of utter madness. Here's the synopsis:

A true tale told by those that lived it. Ten friends recount the unbelievable true story of renting a limousine for an annual event and after 24 hours of indecency, intoxication, possession, trespassing, kidnapping and assault find themselves stranded and left for dead in the middle of nowhere. By combining narration of the actual participants with feature-length re-creation, this telling of "the greatest bar story ever told" marries broad subject with experimental form.

The film was co-directed by Gideon C. Kennedy and Marcus Rosentrater. There's no official release date yet, but it is supposed to come out sometime this year.

3 New Photos of Yondu from GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

Marvel has been releasing a lot of great stuff for Guardians of the Galaxy this week, and I'm sure there is more to come. If you haven't seen that extended trailer yet, I highly suggest you check it out here! Today we have three new photos of Michael Rooker as Yondu in the epic sci-fi space adventure. In an interview with USA Today, the actor talked a little bit about his character.

For those of you who don't know the backstory of Yondu, he is connected to Chris Pratt's character Peter Quill. When Quill was a little kid he went through a tragedy and was taken off Earth by Yondu, who became his surrogate father figure, and he raised Peter alongside the Ravagers. This is how Rooker explains it:

"He's feeling lost, vulnerable, defeated, emotionally drained and hurt, and here is Yondu in this light coming down and brings him up into the spacecraft and takes him away. It might have been pretty horrific, but also a bit cool."

Rooker also says that Yondu has "some interesting issues — not a good guy, not a bad guy. There's hope and there's a heart inside… It's not so black and white — I should say blue and white. And I enjoy roles that are like that, even if they're not in some galaxy somewhere other than ours."

You can read more details about the relationship between Yondu and Quill in the interview and how it plays into the story that the movie tells. Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters on August 1st!

Boba Fett's First Real Appearance Was at a County Fair in 1978

I'm not sure how many of you know this, but Boba Fett's first appearance wasn't in the 1980 film Empire Strikes Back. It also wasn't in the 1978 animated segment of the Star Wars Holiday Special as Vader’s right-hand man where he is holding the trident looking weapon.

Boba Fett's first appearance was live when he marched in the San Anselmo Country Fair parade on September 24th, 1978. According to Star Wars.com:

Parades are usually high school bands and Corn Princesses and floats, not flamethrowers and jetpacks and helmets. So what and why was Boba Fett in a parade in a small city twenty miles north of San Francisco? For one, San Anselmo was home to the famous house at 52 Park Way, which was the galactic core of Lucasfilm at the time. So once the annual fall parade came around, it seemed to make perfect sense. Why not?

The Boba Fett costume was worn by Duwayne Dunham, who was an assistant film editor on Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. No one had ever seen this character before at the time outside of Lucasfilm. When asked how people reacted to Boba Fett during the Parade Dunham told the site:

"I would imagine that [for] most people seeing the two, they just figured it was a new character aligned with Vader. We were at the front end of the parade; we were leading the whole thing. We just walked side by side down the street. It was a little funny. My focus was on making the movie. San Anselmo is a small community. There weren’t that many people there and I don’t think any press outside of the San Anselmo newspaper covered it in any way."

Dunham was then asked if he thought that the character would be come so popular:

"Everybody had high, high hopes because Boba was such a cool-looking costume. Outside of Vader, it was the best. The character evolved…the all-white [version] was just another stormtrooper, a supertrooper. But as the character evolved, when he got painted…it was so cool. But everyone had high hopes. I was around George all the time and would hear all the conversations [so] I was looking for another character kind of on the level of Han Solo. But for some reason it just didn’t pan out as George had imagined, and then came Jedi, it was 'throw him in the Sarlaac pit!' We kinda mounted a protest saying 'You can’t do that to Boba Fett! He’s deserving of more!' But they threw him in…and as you know, fans have never let him die."

Boba Fett is such a cool character, and it's good to know that someday we will be in a theater watching a stand alone Star Wars film based around him. I've included some photos from the parade below along with the animated version of the character that I mentioned above.

Guillermo del Toro to Direct Black & White Film Before PACIFIC RIM 2

In a recent interview with Collider, director Guillermo del Toro revealed that he would be directing a small, untitled black and white film before he takes on Pacific Rim 2. He's looking to shoot the movie in February or March, and he wants legendary actor John Hurt to play a significant part in the story. He also said that there will be "one great creature" in the story. When asked about the film the director said:

"Right away, in February/March I should [start on] another very small movie, black and white, really, really bizarre before starting—we start pre-production on Pacific Rim 2 in August, and then I interrupt it briefly to go into the first of next year to do this strange little movie, and then I restart it and go all the way until we start shooting Pacific Rim 2 at the end of 2015 for release in 2017."

He doesn't give many details on the story, but in this next part of the interview he talks about wanting to work with Hurt, whom he previously directed in both Hellboy movies, and the other casting saying:

“It’s a very small cast. I would love to have John Hurt, and there’s an actress that I have in mind that is not well-known but I’ve seen her in a short film. That’s all she’s really done, one feature and one short, but she has an incredibly interesting taste and I’m gonna try her out for the main role.”

This sounds like a very promising movie. I've been saying for years that I would love to see Del Toro go back to his roots and make a small film. I'm really happy and excited that he's going to do this. I believe it's these kinds of films that help directors find their mojo again, and help them tell better stories and develop better characters.

There still aren't many details on the story, but I suspect we'll see the first trailer for the film in the near future.

Half of Firestorm Cast in THE FLASH

The CW has cast Robbie Amell in the recurring role of Ronnie Raymond, the fiance of S.T.A.R. Labs scientist Caitlin Snow in the upcoming new series The Flash. The character is also one-half of the DC Comics character Firestorm.

There's no confirmation on if he'll actually turn into Firestorm in the series, but I don't see why he wouldn't. In the comics Ronnie is fused together with his partner, and he has some of the most complex and unique powers in the DC universe. He’s able to transform matter into other elements, he's blessed with superhuman strength, and, of course, he can fly.

half-of-firestorm-cast-in-the-flash

The news comes from TV Line which says that in the series he will play a "S.T.A.R. Labs maintenance worker" and that he'll be "an integral part in the particle accelerator accident that transforms Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) into the titular speedster."

Executive producer Greg Berlanti said in a statement:

“[DC Comics Chief Creative Officer] Geoff Johns, Andrew Kreisberg and myself designed the pilot and series to include Ronnie (aka Firestorm) — and to actually have someone with Robbie’s talent playing the role is beyond exciting. We can’t wait for viewers and fans of the character to check it out.”

One other interesting bit of information about Robbie Amell is that he is the real life cousin of Arrow star Stephen Amell.

There's another rumor from The Tracking Board that has hit the web that says Harry Potter director Chris Columbus is set to produce the sequels to The Goonies and Gremlins. It was originally reported that Gremlins would be a remake, but according to /Film the film will actually be a sequel that takes place 30 years after the original film.

There has been no official confirmation of Columbus' involvement at the moment, so we'll treat this as a rumor for now.

Warner Bros. has been looking to get another Gremlins made for several years. The film project is currently on the fast track to production with Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg set to produce.

The Goonies sequel has also been a topic of discussion for years, but until recently it didn't seem like it would ever happen. The original movie's director Richard Donner is on board the project, and he is the one who basically announced the sequel was actually happening. He also said that Steven Spielberg came up with the idea for the story, and they are looking to get the original cast together to star in it.

Spielberg is, of course, expected to be involved with both of these projects as an executive producer. I personally think it will be fun to revisit these classic movies and characters in these sequels. I'm really glad that these are going to be sequels and not remakes. I don't ever want to see these movies remade.

Columbus is a talented filmmaker, and he worked on the original scripts for both The Goonies and Gremlins. So it makes sense that he would come on board to help in the process of bringing these sequels to life.
