5 Geeky Things We Want This Week: May the Fourth Edition

True story: I did not see Star Wars until I was 27 years old. Also a true story: until I was 27 years old, I thought I had seen Star Wars as a child. I did totally see Ewoks: The Battle for Endor, though. Anyway, Star Wars day is swiftly approaching, so put a rush order on these geeky items to celebrate in style.

Stormtrooper Suit Up Racerback Tank
Maybe you want to show your Star Wars love in a hip, ironic way. Maybe you want it to be ambiguously political, too. Like, the real drones are the people who wear suits to work and buy and trade our futures, or something. I don’t know, maybe that Stormtrooper just wants to look fly. (There is a men’s version of the shirt here.) [Etsy]

Jedi Sleeved Blanket
If you celebrate Star Wars day alone, watching all six of the movies (plus the weird Ewok TV movies), and eating a ton of snack foods, you’re going to want this blanket. Look like a Jedi while you sit around stuffing your gob like Jabba the Hutt. [Think Geek]

I Love You, I Know Rings
I have spent the last year unsuccessfully trying to get every engaged geek I know to use these for their wedding rings. If you met your girlfriend at last year’s May the Fourth party, here’s a way to put a ring on it without actually telling her how you feel. [Etsy]

Magnetic R2D2 Bottle Opener
I don’t know where you live, but here in L.A. it is hotter than Tatooine, and in weather like this, there is nothing better than sitting outside with your friends late at night, drinking an ice cold (root) beer. And when your buddies can’t open the bottles with their teeth, this bottle opener is so much cooler than a church key. [Amazon]

LEGO Boba Fett Keylight
It is probably your goal in life to not actually do a lot but look really cool at all times. If so, Boba Fett is your spirit animal, and you can have him with you always, lighting your way, if you buy this keylight. [Think Geek]

DOCTOR WHO's Matt Smith Joins TERMINATOR: GENESIS

Well, Terminator: Genesis just got a hell of a lot more interesting! Paramount Pictures and director Alan Taylor have officially cast former Doctor Who star Matt Smith in an undisclosed role in the upcoming Terminator reboot. Deadline reports that Smith will play "a major role that will grow in the second and third films." How awesome would it be if they had the Time Lord battling the Terminator!?

I'm a big fan of Smith. He's one of my favorite Doctors, and whatever his role ends up being in this new Terminator trilogy, I'm sure he's going to be awesome. The actor joins Emilia Clarke (Sara Connor), Jason Clarke (John Connor), Jai Courtney (Kyle Reese), Day Okeniyi (Danny Dyson), and of course, Arnold Schwarzenegger, who will reprise his signature cyborg role.

The movie is set to be released on July 1st, 2015. Smith being cast in this movie is seriously the best thing about it so far. This news definitely upped my excitement level.

Baz Luhrmann May Direct an Elvis Presley Biopic

So even though a couple weeks ago we were all talking about the possibility of Baz Luhrmann directing an adaptation of Kung Fu for Legendary, apparently he is also in talks to direct an untitled Elvis Presley biopic for their archnemesis Warner Bros., which, honestly, seems like a more natural project for the director.

The Wrap reports that the script for the project is being written by Kelly Marcel (Saving Mr. Banks, Fifty Shades of Grey) and is not based on any existing material. Since it’s original, we don’t have any idea what periods of his life the film will cover. I think Luhrmann could go bananas with Vegas-era Elvis, but maybe it’ll be army Elvis. Could you imagine the redesign Luhrmann would give the Army uniform?

Apparently Luhrmann’s possible Kung Fu adaptation is still in development, and no one knows which project will serve as his Great Gatsby follow-up, but you guys, hear me out. He should combine the projects. Do Kung Fu, keep the seventies desert setting, only make it fat, Vegas Elvis searching for his half brother. He could travel from town to town, face off against evildoers, then sing at the town hall when it’s all over. I know that Legendary and Warner Bros. are probably still hurt after their recent split, but this could get them back together. It would be so much better than Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

Luhrmann is also developing a Napoleon miniseries for HBO, but I’m sorry, Baz, I can’t figure out a way to work that one in.

Magnificent NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS Cuckoo Clock

This Nightmare Before Christmas themed cuckoo clock is seriously a must own for any hardcore fans of the classic Tim Burton film. It's available for purchase at The Bradford Exchange and for only $200! That's not a bad price at all for something as awesome as this. Here's a description of the clock:

Jack Skellington and Sally stand in front of the Town Hall and Jack's Tower. At the flip of a switch, the windows of Jack's Tower, the ghosts and pumpkins illuminate with glowing light. Instead of a traditional cuckoo on the hour, this clock plays "This is Halloween" while Zero pops in and out of the doors atop the Town Hall. The clock is powered by a precision quartz movement and features an embellished clock face, complete with spider web design and slightly off-kilter numbers. The swinging brass-toned pendulum is decorated with the Halloween Town Spiral Hill. Decorative pinecone weights hang below, with Shock and Barrel clinging to them while Lock cheers them on from above.

I love the design and all of the cool details that you find on it. Thanks to Geekologie for the heads up!

Release Date for Tim Burton's BIG EYES Announced

tim-burtons-big-eyes-has-a-release-date

Tim Burton's next movie is called Big Eyes, and The Weinstein Company has announced that it will be released on December 25th. The film is a biopic that centers on a artist named Margaret Keane, a "painter whose distinctive creations featuring big-eyed children became one of art's first mass-market success stories in the 1950s. The drama covers Keane's personal awakening at the onset of the feminist movement, leading to a lawsuit she filed against her husband, Walter, who claimed credit for her works. He lived the high life while she toiled in relative anonymity in the Bay Area."

This seems like it will be a great project for Burton. He's been needing to change things up a bit and do something different. This seems like a different kind of movie than we're used to seeing him make, so my hopes are high.

I'm a huge fan of Burton's early work, but the best thing he's done in the last 6 years is Frankenweenie. I'm looking forward to this new movie that he's making, and I hope it gives us some fresh Burton greatness.

Big Eyes has a solid cast of talented actors that includes Amy Adams, Christoph Waltz, Danny Huston, Krysten Ritter, Jason Schwartzman, and Terence Stamp

The Weinstein Company will also release their Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game on November 21st and writer and director Ned Benson's The Disappearance of Eleanor Ribgy on September 26th. Below, you'll find details on these other two movies thanks to the press release that the production company sent out:

Director Morten Tyldum's The Imitation Game, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Mark Strong, Rory Kinnear, Charles Dance, Allen Leech and Matthew Beard, offers a dramatic portrayal of the life and work of one of Britain's most extraordinary unsung heroes, Alan Turing. The pioneer of modern-day computing, Turing is credited with cracking the German Enigma code and the film is a nail-biting race against time by Turing and his brilliant team at Britain's top-secret code-breaking centre, Bletchley Park, during the darkest days of World War II. Turing, whose contributions and genius significantly shortened the war, saving thousands of lives, was the eventual victim of an unenlightened British Establishment, but his work and legacy live on.

Lastly, The Disappearance of Eleanor Ribgy, which stars James McAvoy and Jessica Chastain, is a love story that explores a New York City couple's relationship during a difficult time in their marriage, from the different perspective of the husband, (McAvoy), a restaurant owner, and of the wife (Chastain), who goes back to college. The project was originally intended to be two different films (subtitled His and Hers) but it is unclear as to whether or not that remains the case.

Mondo is mostly known for the amazing movie poster art that they continue to create and sell, but when they first started, they were focusing on t-shirts. The line has continued to evolve into bigger and better things. They built their poster business, then got into selling limited edition movie soundtracks on vinyl, and now they are getting back into the clothing business. They've just revealed their Mondo 237 collection which features products based on the carpet design of the Overlook Hotel in Stanley Kubrick‘s The Shining. I've included several photos of the collection below, and they are taking pre-orders here.

Review: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 - Action-Packed Love Story

$

the_amazing_spider_man_2_5.jpg

My hopes and expectations were incredibly high for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. I was actually a little nervous going into this one. Lots of sequels have disappointed me over the years, but this was not one of them. Director Marc Webb's follow up was way better than the first Amazing Spider-Man film, and it might just be better than any of the Spider-Man films that Sam Raimi made. I'm going to have to rewatch them just to make sure, but as of right now I believe that it is.

The opening shot of Spider-Man swinging through New York City was awe-inspiring, it hooked me. It gave me a sense of what it actually might be like to swing around with Spidey through the city — seeing the movie on an IMAX screen definitely has its advantages. They experimented with this type of stuff in the first movie, and they did a fantastic job, but it was perfected in this sequel. It was a smooth and fun ride, and I loved every scene that featured the web-slinger using the city as his playground.

The action in the movie was insane and extremely fun to watch. One of my favorite aspects of the action was how the hero of the story kept a sense of humor and cracked jokes throughout some of the fight sequences. Some of those scenes were very heavy, and it was just nice to have Spidey crack a joke every now and then to lighten the mood a bit. Of course, there are some events that take place that Spider-Man has to take seriously. If you were hoping to see some great action in the movie, then you'll be happy to know that it's there.

Even though the movie was loaded with action it didn't distract or take away from the heart of the story. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is first and foremost a love story. It's an action-packed love story, but the romance between Peter and Gwen is the core of the film. There is such a beautiful relationship between those two characters, and out of everything this movie has to offer, that story and relationship is the best part. Webb has a knack for portraying relationships in the stories he tells. You'd know this if you saw his first feature film (500) Of Summer. Well, he brought that to this movie and he gave us something very human, and something we could all relate too. This is a movie I'll watch again, and one of the things I'm looking forward to seeing again most is this aspect of the story.

For those of you who are worried about three villains being packed into one movie… don't be. Webb pulled it off brilliantly and things played out very smoothly in that aspect. It didn't feel like there was any overcrowding. Electro was the main baddie, and he was absolutely stunning. The character set up was perfect, the intensity he brought to the story was exciting, and he was a truly terrifying threat. Electro even got his own menacing theme song, which was extremely powerful. Rhino was barely in the movie. In fact, almost every scene he was in you've already seen in the trailers.

My least favorite part of the movie was Harry Osborn when he turned into the Green Goblin. I was disappointed when he made the full transformation into the villain. It felt forced. It was like all of a sudden he became a crazy over-exaggerated run-of-the-mill bad guy. From the way he talked in his evil raspy voice, wildly licking his lips, to his cackle laugh, it didn't work for me, and I don't think it worked for the character. It's like he went from being this really intense guy to someone that is hard to take seriously. I think they just needed to keep him a little more level, and not as crazy over-the-top. That's my one gripe about the movie.

The acting in it was all top-notch though. Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx and Dane DeHaan all gave stellar performances. I just have to say that Stone is a wonderful actress. I just came to really care for her character throughout the course of the movie. The director did a wonderful job building her character up. There are certain things that I would love to share with you about the story, but I don't want to spoil it for you. I will say that it's an emotional ride.

In the end, I enjoyed The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and I'm excited to see it again. I really hope that the rest of you Spidey fans out there enjoy it. All the talent involved with creating this film delivered something spectacular that everyone can enjoy. So go see the movie!

Thank you Marc Webb for making such an incredible Spider-Man sequel!

The STAR WARS Sequel that Almost Replaced EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

The STAR WARS Sequel that Almost Replaced EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

The original Star Wars trilogy could have turned out very differently if the original Star Wars film didn't succeed the way George Lucas had hoped. Even if the film didn't do very well, he still wanted to make a sequel, so on top of the idea he already had envisioned, there was also a plan B for a smaller scale movie. Just in case the box office returns of the first movie were low and he couldn't get the budget he needed to bring his own idea for Empire Strikes Back to life, he had a second option to fall back on.

According to Screen Crush, Lucas hired science fiction novelist Alan Dean Foster to write up the the backup plan for a smaller scale follow up in the form of a book. It was titled Splinter Of The Mind’s Eye. In an interview with the author he said:

“I was originally brought in while ‘Star Wars’ was still in production, on a two-book contract to do the novelization of the film, but he also instructed me to write a novel that could be filmed on a low budget."

The story for the film focused more on Luke and Leia, mostly because Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher were the only two stars contractually on board to reprise their roles at the time. It featured the two characters on their way to an important meeting with representatives of a system that might join the Rebellion. On the way there they crash land on a swamp planet called Mimban. While stranded there they discovered that Mimban is a strategic mining outpost for The Empire. Apparently The Empire was trying to find something called a Kaiburr crystal. It ended with a climactic lightsaber battle between Darth Vader and Princess Leia with Luke pinned down by a rock. It's then explained that Luke eventually gets into the fight, severing Vader’s right arm before sending him down a "seemingly bottomless pit." Wow! How crazy would that have been?! Han Solo wasn't included in the story, and was only mentioned twice. Foster explained:

“I couldn’t use the characters of Han Solo and Chewbacca. Chewbacca because he’s Han Solo’s buddy and Han Solo because Harrison Ford hadn’t yet signed on to do anything related to future developments of ‘Star Wars.’ It was kind of liberating. The story idea I had in mind focused on Luke, Leia and, in the background of course, Darth Vader. And working a third major character into the storyline would have been a little awkward. It was less that I had to worry about.”

The Skywalker family and relationships weren't all figured out at this point, and the story doesn't really fit the established universe canon. Like the relationship between Luke and Leia, where at one point in the book they have to get up close to each other for warmth. The scene is described as follows in the book:

“Awkwardly pressed up against him, the Princess seemed to take no notice of their proximity. In the dampness, though, her body heat was near palpable to Luke and he had to force himself to keep his attention on what he was doing.”

Yeah, so that's a little awkward knowing what we know now. The author had no idea they were siblings when writing the book though. It wasn't even until Lucas wrote the second draft of the script for Empire that he had the idea to make Darth Vader Luke's dad. Foster went on to say,

“What I was working from, basically, was the kiss in ‘Star Wars,’ before they swing across the gap. That didn’t strike me as a particularly brotherly-sisterly kiss at the time.”

As you know Star Wars succeeded, and Lucas used all of the money that he made from it to give us Empire Strikes Back. If Empire would have failed, Lucasfilm would have died with it.

It would have been really interesting to see how the Star Wars universe would have evolved if this is the movie that would have been made. It would have definitely changed everything that we know and love about the franchise. As interesting as this story is, I'm so happy that Lucas committed himself to make Empire.

Deadpool Wants to Make Hulk Pee the Bed

I love the humor that artist Marco D’Alfonso brings to his work. The stuff he creates is always entertaining. This latest piece of his is part of CBR's The Line is Drawn series, which has been themed "Superhero Spring Break!" It features Deadpool playing the classic sleeping pee prank on the Hulk. The fact that Deadpool is prepared with an umbrella is the perfect touch to this illustration that really ties it together.

SKIES OF ARCADIA - First 4 Figures' Vyse Statue Up for Pre-Order

When this whole HD remaster craze started, there were a few games that topped my list of most wanted, and towards the top was Sega and Overworks outstanding Dreamcast RPG Skies of Arcadia. While there was an upgraded port on the Gamecube, there hasn’t been another one since, and now that RPGs seem to be undergoing a renaissance of sorts, maybe now is a good time to make this a real thing.

Now that my pitch to Sega is on the books, let's get to why we’re here shall we? First 4 Figures has expanded their Sega All Stars line yet again, and it features none other than Vyse, star of the above mentioned Skies of Arcadia. The statue is pure fan service, including his Blue Rogue faction’s flag, a switch out hand that includes his standby cutlass, and facial features and style lines featuring the same cool, cartoony art style that was so beloved by fans. Vyse comes in at 17 inches tall, and is one of 425 pieces being made, so if you like what you see get to steppin' like Martin and preorder yours now. That is if you’ve got $219.99 lying around.

It should be said that any day I can make a Martin reference qualifies as one that was truly worthwhile.

Fun GODZILLA Fan Art and Japanese Fans say America's Godzilla is Too Fat

Here's a fun piece of Godzilla fan art from artist Olivier Silven that kind of goes along perfectly with what Japanese Godzilla fans are saying about the Americanized version of Godzilla

Now, Godzilla has always been a massively huge creature hell bent on causing destruction, but according to the Japanese he's too fat in Garreth Edwards' amazing looking new film. Upon viewing the new version of the monster a lot of them mocked the design and had this to say about it:

"Whichever way you look at it, he's an American fatty."

"He got fat in America on cola and pizza."

"He's couch potato Godzilla;"

"It's got no neck."

"He Supersized."

"Marshmallow-Godzilla?"

"It looks like a seal."

"He’s so fat, I laughed.”

"It's chubby and cute."

Of course he's big… it's Godzilla for cryin' out loud! I don't get it. It must be a cultural thing. I love the look of the monster, he's pure muscle, and absolutely terrifying. What do you think about the look of Godzilla? Do you think he's too fat?

The movie opens up in theaters on May 16th. Via: THR

Activision has released the first intense full trailer for their next installment of the Call of Duty video game franchise, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. Kevin Spacey plays the main villain in the game which not only features his voice, but his likeness as well. This game looks so freakin' good!

It's pretty awesome that they got Spacey to lend his talents to the Call of Duty franchise. He is incredible in this first trailer, and even though he is all CG he sure gives an incredible performance. Damn, he's good.

Spacey isn't the only big star to be included in the franchise. Some of the previous releases of the game have featured voiceovers from Gary Oldman, Kiefer Sutherland, Michelle Rodriguez, and Timothy Olyphant

The game comes out on November 4th, 2014, and as a fan of Call of Duty, I can't wait to play it!

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Spoiler Review

$
0
0

If you don’t want to know the nitty-gritty plot details from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, close this tab now because this article is chock full of spoilers, but if you’ve seen the movie and want a spot to discuss the good and the bad and the weirdly campy, this is the place for you. Let’s get down to it.

I generally liked the movie, but there was a LOT going on in this sequel, and the movie suffered for it. The overabundance of villains was a problem, and they ended up detracting from the narrative. It ultimately felt like the movie existed solely to put the pieces in place for Sinister Six, and that really annoys me. Jamie Foxx’s Electro had a promising start, but was dispatched with pretty quickly and shunted off to the horrible Ravencroft Institute, which was the worst. (What movie did Martin Csokas, playing Dr. Kafka, think he was in?) I really think the movie would have been stronger had his storyline been allowed to unspool slowly. You have a The King of Comedy-level superfan turn into a super villain hell-bent on Spider-Man’s destruction, and you use him as, basically, the warm-up act?

A tighter focus on Max/Electro would have better served the story the movie seemed to start out telling, which was how much Peter Parker loves being Spider-Man and the choices and sacrifices he has to make for it. That montage of Spider-Man’s heroics and Peter’s increasing exhaustion was one of my favorite parts of the movie. No, really. It was. And Max’s obsessive fandom/disillusionment/thirst for revenge would have been all of a piece with that. His scene with Gwen on the elevator, when he is talking about how special Spider-Man made him feel and she is thinking of how much Spider-Man has cost her, was a lovely bit of storytelling, and I wish they had explored that more.

Instead, we spent too much time with Dane DeHaan’s Harry Osborne/Green Goblin. I liked DeHaan in the is role a lot, actually. On the “Bad Baby” episode of This American Life, a child psychologist says that the worst person in the world is a two-year-old who never grew up and learned to accommodate others, and this iteration of Harry Osborne was that to a T. He is a spoiled kid with a chip on his shoulder who is used to always getting everything he wants when he wants it (except his father’s love.) The problem is we pushed through his story too quickly. I liked meeting him and seeing his relationship with Peter, but everything progressed at the expense of other story lines. And this was echoed in one of my nitpicks about the plot: if Norman Osborne died of the same disease with an onset of symptoms at the same age, and lived for another 20 years, why is Harry dying right now? Let the disease progress more slowly, and let Harry become the Green Goblin in The Amazing Spider-Man 3.

Trying to rush through Harry’s story line also had the consequence of robbing the film of a third act. Gwen’s death should have come at the end of the second act, leading to a bigger fight with Green Goblin, but instead it wasn’t the end of anything, and we move from her funeral to Osborne’s plan to build a group of super villains. It was incredibly dissatisfying, and that’s coming from someone who liked the finale of Lost. It was pretty fun when Spider-Man finally returned and went after Rhino, but why was Rhino even in the movie? Just so that he can be in the next one. It might have been more emotionally resonant if Peter had finally suited back up to fight his old friend. That probably would have made the movie interminably long, though, so maybe Gwen's death at the hand of Green Goblin could have been the plot of… The Amazing Spider-Man 3

I didn’t hate everything about the movie, though. Remember, I said I liked it on the whole. So what was the best part? Every scene with Peter and Gwen. Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield are magic together. They enjoy each other so much that it is impossible to be unhappy when they are sharing the screen. Their scenes are the best parts of the movie, and frankly, I wish they had given Gwen more to do. She works best when she is helping Peter — by magnetizing his web-shooters, for example — rather than making things so “complicated” for him. But girlfriend was right to dump him. Make a choice, Peter. Either be with her or honor her dad’s wishes, but don’t stand outside the dim sum place sad-sacking it up when she should be celebrating. Just kiss her and give her a token present and be nice to her mom. But that’s a bit of a digression.

I basically loved most of the scenes that weren’t focused on a super villain, plus the initial Times Square showdown with Electro. And visually, I have no complaints. Marc Webb and the CG artists do such a great job with Peter’s balletic web-slinging around New York that watching it is joyful. It really makes you understand why Peter loves being Spider-Man so much.

In the end, I thought the movie was entertaining, but I’m not convinced they knew what story they were trying to tell when they made it, and my proof is this: They shot a Mary Jane Watson storyline. How would that have fit in with anything else in the movie? It wouldn’t have, and they were smart to cut it. They would have been smarter if they had cut more.

Fox has released three TV spots and a clip from 24: Live Another Day. The series premiers on May 5th, which is this coming Monday! I can't believe it's almost here. I love this franchise, and I'm excited about seeing Kiefer Sutherland back as Jack Bauer. I really hope that this is just the beginning, and that we will get even more seasons of the show, and possibly a movie.

The high-octane saga reunites the Emmy Award-winning team of executive producer Howard Gordon; star and executive producer Kiefer Sutherland; co-creator Robert Cochran; executive producers, Evan Katz, Manny Coto, David Fury, Brian Grazer and director Jon Cassar. It also will retain the real-time, pulse-pounding, fast-paced format with split screens and interweaving storylines. Set and shot in London, the suspenseful event series once again will follow the exploits of heroic agent Jack Bauer.

Four years ago, Jack was a fugitive from justice. Now an exile, he nevertheless is willing to risk his life and freedom to avert yet another global disaster. Tracking Jack are CIA head Steve Harris; CIA agent Kate Morgan, who is both resourceful and ruthless; Jordan Reed, a smart and sophisticated CIA computer tech; and Erik Ritter, a sharp, strong and arrogant field operative. Calling the shots is James Heller, now President of the United States. Heller is flanked by his Chief of Staff Mark Boudreau, who is married to Heller’s daughter — Jack’s former flame, Audrey. Meanwhile, a hardened Chloe O’Brian, Bauer’s CTU confidante, is now working underground with high-profile hacker Adrian Cros.

Guest stars on 24: Live Another Day include Michelle Fairley and Golden Globe Award nominee Stephen Fry. The harrowing day will have Jack attempting to thwart an unthinkable terrorist attack that could change the world forever.
