Ben Affleck and Matt Damon Bring PROJECT GREENLIGHT Back to HBO

ben-affleck-and-matt-damon-bring-back-project-greenlight-to-hbo

Do you remember the HBO series Project Greenlight? It was one of the only reality TV shows that I really enjoyed watching because about something that I was actually passionate about. The show was launched in 2001 and was executive produced and judged by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. I'm happy to say that they are bringing it back!

The show allowed directors and screenwriters to send their work in to producers in hopes of being chosen to make a feature length movie. Producers would take the best from each category and then pair them together to work on the film production.

The series spawned three feature length movies and launched the careers of Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, who wrote The Collector and some of the Saw films. Horror director John Gulager (Feast, Piranha 3DD) also got his start on the show. One of the films even featured a young Shia LaBeouf and Amy Smart

There's no premiere date set yet, but I'm looking forward to watching it again. Below you'll find a full press release with all of the details:

"Project Greenlight," the documentary series chronicling the search for a first-time director and exploring the filmmaking process, will return to HBO for a new season, it was announced today by Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming. Executive producers of the new season include Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, who were executive producers of the previous two seasons on HBO in 2001 and 2003, as well as Adaptive Studios' Marc Joubert, TJ Barrack, Perrin Chiles and Marshall Lewy, and Miramax's Zanne Devine. The new season of "Project Greenlight" will be produced for HBO by Adaptive Studios, Affleck and Damon's Pearl Street Films, and Miramax.

"'Project Greenlight' was ahead of its time," notes Affleck. "Now that technology has caught up to the concept, we thought it was a perfect time to bring it back. A whole new generation of filmmakers has grown up sharing everything, and the next big director could be just an upload away. It is really great having 'Project Greenlight' back at HBO."

Damon says, "'Project Greenlight' works - careers have been launched and sustained as a direct result of this contest. Pete Jones, John Gulager, Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan are just a few of the PGL alums who've gone on to do great things in Hollywood, and Ben and I are really proud of that."

"We are delighted to reunite with Ben and Matt for a new season of "Project Greenlight,'" noted Lombardo. "This unique show offers a fascinating look inside moviemaking that is unlike anything else on TV."

Spanning the entire filmmaking process, "Project Greenlight" takes a revealing, uncensored look at the challenges facing a first-time director. The show begins with a digital competition, following the winner from pre-production and casting through principal photography and post-production. Equipped with a Hollywood-vetted script and surrounded by a team of industry professionals, the fledgling director must learn to cope with pressure from the studio and producers, survive on-set politics and lead a veteran cast and crew, all while trying to deliver a viable movie – on schedule and on budget.

"Reuniting the original forces behind 'Project Greenlight' -- Matt, Ben, Miramax and HBO -- is pretty awesome, and demonstrates Adaptive's commitment to revitalizing and re-imagining compelling ideas," says Marc Joubert, co-founder of Adaptive Studios.

Original 1975 STAR WARS Casting Announcements

Star Wars - A New Hope (1977) Unused Concept.jpg

The official casting announcement for Star Wars: Episode VII is probably the biggest geek entertainment news of the year. Everyone is talking about it, and the fans are excited! Why wouldn't they be? We've got the original Star Wars cast coming back to reprise their roles. Every time I think about that I can't help but get excited! I grew up on these movies, I've watched them a ridiculous amount of times, and I'm still not tired of them. These are movies that just make me happy.

Casting announcements weren't as big back in 1975 as they are now. These days, casting news spreads like wild fire thanks to the Internet. Back then casting announcement were small little blurbs in publications such as Box Office Magazine, the LA Times and Variety. On top of that, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher were nobodies in the entertainment world. No one knew who they were and no one cared… We do now!

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences dove into their archives and found many of those original Star Wars casting announcements and posted them online. They also included a couple of articles talking about the success of the film including an ad Steven Spielberg took out in Variety to congratulate George Lucas. Who would have thought that the guy who made American Graffiti would change the face of cinema?

Boba Fett Ball Gown Cosplay Is Fashionably Awesome

I've seen a lot of lady Boba Fett cosplayers over the years, but this one is really quite fashionably awesome. Who would have thought that an intergalactic bounty hunter could look so elegant? The photo comes from Instagram user theapexfan, and the cosplayer was spotted at C2E2. The photo came with the following caption:

"The Great Pit of Carkoon has been good to you, Ms. Fett."

"Marge! Did you replace our regular mirror with a magical mirror from a mystical salesman at a weird store that if we went back to find it it wouldn't be there anymore!?"

I love The Simpsons humor. Fox has released a full trailer for their upcoming LEGO special called "Brick Like Me." This whole LEGO thing might be a gimmick to get people to tune in to watch, but it does look like it will be a decently funny episode. It looks like it was animated using the same techniques that were used to make The LEGO Movie

Homer wakes up in a world where his family and everyone in Springfield are made of Legos. Can he 'put together' how he got there, and figure out how to get home before he's stuck in a world of bricks forever?

The episode is set to premiere on May 4th at 8pm. Will you be tuning in to watch it?

Check out this small collection of striking art inspired by genre film classics such as Aliens, Gremlins, TerminatorCreepshow, and Wolfman. All of them are fantastic, but my two favorites would have to be the Aliens piece above and the Gremlins piece below. That Gremlins piece is simply terrifying, and I love it.

Limited edition screen prints are on sale from Mondo at the Texas Frightmare Weekend, opening May 2nd to 4th 2014, at the Hyatt Regency DFW.

A couple of new TV spots have been released for X-Men: Days of Future Past. They focus on the Sentinels, who were created to hunt and kill mutants. I like the designs of the Sentinels in the film, and the evolution from the retro 1970s look to the future version. Those things look insanely menacing. The movie is set to be released on May 23rd.

CineFix presents The Amazing Spider-Man retold via old-school 8-bit (Okay, and 16 bit) game tech. No quarters or controllers required, just a chance to get a refresher before you see Amazing Spider-Man 2!!

LEGO STAR WARS: THE YODA CHRONICLES Series Trailer

Disney XD has released the first trailer for their new Star Wars animated series, LEGO Star Wars: The New Yoda Chronicles. The trailer invites us to "join the lighter side of Star Wars' most memorable characters." It looks like a fun and silly show that I wouldn't mind watching with my kids, but if I didn't have kids to watch it with then I'd probably skip it. The first episode is called 'Escape from the Jedi Temple,' and it's described as being "filled with the Force and brick-tastic fun."

As seen in the trailer, the Emperor debuts his new theme -- "The Imperial March" -- and doesn't react well at its lukewarm reception. Han, Chewie, Luke, Leia, Yoda, and the entire gang (including a blaster-toting C-3PO) are back, ready to take on Darth Vader and the Empire.

It makes me sad that they'll be releasing this before Seth Green's show, Star Wars Detours. That one looked like it would have been fantastic.

The new series is set to air this Saturday on Disney Channel at 9pm ET/PT and this Sunday on Disney XD at 7pm ET/PT.

How THE LEGO MOVIE Should Have Ended with Superman and Batman

I love what the people over at How It Should Have Ended are doing. Their alternate ending videos are always entertaining, and their latest creation for The LEGO Movie is freakin' hilarious. This might actually be the best one they've done. They use the same style of the animation that was used in The LEGO Movie and brilliantly make some fun points about the movie's ending, specifically focusing on Superman and how he should have been the one to save the day. This is an episode you don't want to miss!

Hulk's Tim Blake Nelson to Join THE FANTASTIC FOUR

The Incredible Hulk co-star Tim Blake Nelson is in final negotiations to join another Marvel movie. Fox wants to cast him in their reboot of The Fantastic Four. He will join director Josh Trank and the rest of the cast that includes Miles Teller as Reed Richards; Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm; Kate Mara as Sue Storm; Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm and Toby Kebbell as the villain, Victor von Doom.

According to THR, Nelson will play Harvey Elder, who is described as "an eccentric and socially awkward scientist." So it's basically the same character he played in The Incredible Hulk.

In the comics, the character Nelson is playing eventually becomes the Mole Man. He is rejected by humanity and becomes the leader of a subterranean group of monsters known as the Moloids.

According to the report, the Mole Man will not appear in this movie, but "Elder’s appearance does set up the character to be the villain in future installments of the franchise."

Nelson is such a great character actor to see up on the big screen, and it's great to see that he could actually have a fun, villainous role in the franchise.

Michael Myers Will Return to the Big Screen in HALLOWEEN 3D!

michael-meyers-will-be-returning-to-the-big-screen-in-3d

Bloody Disgusting announced recently that there will be another installment in the Michael Myers saga with Halloween 3D. This same 3D concept for the movie was in development over three years ago, but it looks like they are ready to jump back on and make it happen. Here is what they had to say:

Our sources on the Cannes stomping ground tell us exclusively that The Weinstein Company is once again looking to get Halloween 3D off the ground.

There is no info as far as script or director, but it is cool to know that this in the works.

In my opinion John Carpenter's original film will always be the best. Something about that movie just hits on all cylinders. I hope that Halloween 3D fulfills my expectations of what a Michael Meyers movie should be.

The X-Men: Days of Future Past videos continue to role in! FOX has released two more film clips for you to watch. The first is called "Wolverine Meets Beast," and it doesn't turn out to be the best first impression for either of them. The second is called "You Abandoned Us All," and it is an argument between young Charles Xavier and Magneto. Xavier is pissed off at his former friend for abandoning him. He also reveals how he is able to walk in the scene. I love Michael Fassbender's voice in the clip because he sounds a lot like Ian McKellen. The movie comes out on May 23rd!

Sam Mendes Speaks About BOND 24

sam-mendes-speaks-out-about-bond-24

I am a huge Bond film fan. I have all the movies from Connery to Brosnan... on VHS. Don’t laugh, that’s just how I roll. The rest I have on DVD. Anyway, Skyfall is one of my favorite Bond films by far. You can tell that Sam Mendes is a fan of the franchise, and he directs that way. I was thrilled to hear that he would be back for what is now titled Bond 24.

Recently in an interview with Charlie Rose, Mendes spoke a little bit about what brought him back to a franchise that he originally said he would be leaving. Mendes starts talking about Bond 24 at about the 17 minute mark of the video, which you can watch below thanks to Hulu.

For those of you who just want the abridged version, here are some relevant quotes, courtesy of Firstshowing:

I also started a number of stories [in Skyfall] that were incomplete. I cast a new M, I cast a new Moneypenny, I cast a new Q, I cast a new Tanner. There was a missing piece now... I felt like there was a way to create a second part of the two-part story. And then, I started to get re-interested in it again. When they agreed to wait a little longer, and not go immediately, and not go with two movies, but one."

[...] What we tried to do, and audiences seemed to embrace in Skyfall, is that for the first time characters were allowed to age. And they were allowed to acknowledge the passing of the years. And they were allowed to acknowledge—in kind of a sly, mischievous way—the history of the franchise that they'd been part of. So there's the DB5 coming out with the Bond theme... Well, the orgy of nostalgia, the noise an audience made, the first time I sat with an audience at that point, was enough to make me want to do it all over again. Because that was my 12 year old self that loved that moment and loved that car..."

Being a fan boy, the November 15, 2015 release date seems unbearable. Kind of like waiting for the next season of Sherlock, but that is for another rant.

Do you think Mendes is still a good choice for the franchise? Who do you think should take over after him? Personally I would like to see David Fincher, James Wan, or Alfonso Cuaron take a shot at it. All three have completely different stylistic approaches that would fit in the world of James Bond.

With the 40th anniversary of Steven Spielberg's Jaws coming up, LEGO builder lizardman created this super cool LEGO playset based on the classic movie. It features the deadly man-eating Shark, the Orca, and the three main characters from the film — Brody, Quint, and Hooper.

Jaws is one of my favorite films of all time, and it would be great if this playset was voted into existence. Let's make it happen, people! You can vote for the LEGO Cuusoo project here

Lou Ferrigno Says Marvel Is Planning Solo HULK Movie

lou-ferrigno-says-marvel-is-planning-solo-hulk-movie

Last month we learned that Marvel has a slate of films planned out through 2028. That's a lot of freakin' movies, and so it wouldn't be too far-fetched to think that another solo Hulk film could happen.

While talking to a local radio station in Minnesota, the original Hulk himself, Lou Ferrigno, said that Marvel is planning on another one. Here's his exact quote:

"Now because he saved the day, they're making another solo Hulk movie after the second Avengers comes out."

Ferrigno provided the voice of Hulk in The Incredible Hulk and The Avengers. He also recently revealed that he will be back for Avengers: Age of Ultron. I'm sure he has some inside information on what's going on.

Another Hulk movie will be made, it's just a matter of time, but what Hulk story Marvel is going to tell? I'd personally put my money on Planet Hulk. It was already rumored last year, and even though Marvel and Joss Whedon denied it, I'm standing by it. Of course Marvel is going to deny it! But let's just wait and see what happens with Avengers: Age of Ultron. How awesome would it be if it set up a Planet Hulk film?!

Whatever Marvel is looking to do with Hulk, one day it has to lead to Planet Hulk. That story needs to get the big screen treatment!

The detail is incredible on this 1/6th scale R2-D2 collectible. Seriously, just wait until you watch the video below and see what the features are. Everything on this droid toy opens and lights up. The only thing it doesn't do is move around on its own. It comes from Sideshow Collectibles, who, as you know, puts a lot of care into their work. Here's the description that was included:

The clever and spunky R2D2 would serve bravely and fearlessly Padme Amidala, Anakin Skywalker, and Luke Skywalker on many missions and tasks.  With his friend C-3PO almost always at his side, this pair of droids would end up on many adventures.  Sideshow Collectibles R2D2 Deluxe Sixth Scale Figure will be available for Pre-Order very soon to add to your Star Wars collection!

This is so damn cool!

Disney has released three new promos for their highly anticipated fantasy film, Maleficent. I'm sure you'll be happy to know that these latest videos feature plenty of new footage for you to check out. There's one extended TV spot, and the other two are basically featurettes that include footage from the movie as well as interviews with the film's stars Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning

From Disney comes “Maleficent”—the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.

They movie will be released on May 30th!

Reactions to Early MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Screening

$

If you are like me, you have been waiting for some kind of screening review for George Miller's long-awaited Mad Max: Fury Road. It looks like our time has come.

Apparently, there was a screening at Warner Bros. and the people who saw it seem to like what they've seen. What we have here are several fan reactions collected from around the web via /Film. Like I said, these are purely fan reactions, and are by no means the thoughts or opinions of GeekTyrant. Here you go:

Randy from Action Figure Times:

This IS the kind of Mad Max II/The Road Warrior on steroids, go-big-or-go-home, bug-nuts crazy, toss-you-in-the-deep-end mythology and put-it-all-out-there-in-case-we-never-make-another-one Mad Max Fury Road. [...]

This movie feels like thirty years of Miller holding in passion for a world that he built so long ago, exploding on the screen. You, remember the third act of The Road Warrior, the bad-ass truck chase that is still hailed as a masterpiece of filmmaking? You do? Good.

Because that’s what this whole movie pretty much is-and it works! A chase that goes long and deep into the heart of Miller’s post-apocalyptic world, trying to get out of the Wasteland. It opens up and hardly slows down.

Kevin Craig West from Facebook:

just came from a year in advance screening of “Mad Max Fury Road”. Weird to not see Gibson as Max but Tom Hardy holds it down just fine. Great action sequences and amazing post apocalyptic vehicles and costuming with awesome makeup.

@Antiochian2010:

Went to a preview screening tonight of Mad Max: Fury Road… Due out in a few months and you are in for a treat…

@Breeza7:

“I can’t see anyone not liking it… There was other Aussies for sure. Nicholas hoult was fantastic too. Very action intense.

On Tom Hardy‘s accent in the film:

“not American sounding like CT, but not British. Hard to explain.”

I am super stoked for the movie to come out. The cast — Hardy, Nicholas Hoult, and Charlize Theron — is fantastic. I can’t wait to see what Miller has in store for us. If any of you out there have had a chance to see Mad Max: Fury Road, please let us know what you think. The movie is set to open in theaters on May 15th, 2015, and here's a synopsis:

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD is the fourth film of George Miller‘s Road Warrior/Mad Max franchise co-written and directed by Miller. The post-apocalyptic action film is set in the furthest reaches of our planet, in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, and most everyone is crazed fighting for the necessities of life.

Within this world of fire and blood exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order… There’s Max (played by TOM HARDY from The Dark Knight Rises), a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos.

And… Furiosa (played by CHARLIZE THERON from Prometheus), a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland.

V/H/S Horror Sequel - Title, Directors, Photo and Plot

ScreenDaily

I've really enjoyed watching the V/H/S horror anthology film series, and today the third film in the franchise was announced. It will be called V/H/S Viral, and it will focus on "fame-obsessed teens who unwittingly become stars of the next Internet sensation."

As for the list of directors coming on board to direct the films in this installment, we have Todd Lincoln (The Apparition), Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes), Marcel Sarmiento (Deadgirl), Gregg Bishop (Dance of the Dead), and Resolution duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead.

This is another great list of directors, and it will be cool to see what insanity they bring to the anthology. As far as casting goes so far the movie stars Emilia Zoryan, Justin Welborn and Emmy Argo. The photo above gives you a first look at them in the film.

EPIC Pictures Group CEO Patrick Ewald had this to say:

“It’s an honour to bring cutting-edge horror to audiences around the world, and the fact that each film features the work of top genre filmmakers makes this franchise truly exciting. We’re very proud to continue to be a part of V/H/S Viral.”

Epic Pictures Group co-founder Shaked Berenson added:

“We knew from the moment we saw the first film at Sundance that this sort of filmmaking was something we wanted to be a part of. It’s a great way to showcase the work of genre masters, which is why the V/H/S franchise resonates with horror fans.”

I wouldn't be surprised if they end up changing the title to V/H/S/3 and premiering at Sundance 2015.
