batman-arkham-origins-new-suit.jpg

Cold, Cold Heart is the first DLC to be released for Batman: Arkham Origins, and thanks to Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Warner Bros. Games Montreal, we are able to bring you a really awesome launch trailer for it. I've included some new images from the game as well.

The DLC gives us the origin story of one of Batman's most interesting villains, Mr. Freeze. I've always loved this character because his backstory is so tragic, and he's a villain that you can actually feel for because of what he's gone through.

Return to Gotham City to ring in the New Year, Arkham Origins style. When the CEO of GothCorp is kidnapped, by Mr. Freeze, Batman™ sets out to bring him to justice. Along the way, he will uncover the tragic history of his new enemy, prompting our hero to attempt the impossible: save the victim AND the villain. Hours of narrative-driven gameplay and new Open World content await!

Batman is given access to a new X.C. suit to deal with the icy weapons and obstacles created by Freeze. The DLC is available for download today April 22nd, on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Astounding TREASURE PLANET Cosplay of Captain Amelia

0

Ryoko Demon as Captain Amelia from Treasure Planet is scary good and could not be any more authentic. Superb photography by Soldatov Vladimir aka Kifir and some great locations really bring the whole thing to another level. Ryoko has been featured on GeekTyrant before and the quality of her work means she'll be featured again in the future. Treasure Planet was not super successful and I'm sure the average person would have no idea who Captain Amelia is, but geeks like me, and hopefully you, do.

As a rare treat we have video of Ryoko rocking this cosplay during Animau no Haru 2014.

Disney Struggling with Releasing CAPTAIN AMERICA 3 against BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN

1x1f.jpg

Even though Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is confident enough in Captain America 3 to release it against Batman Vs. Superman, Disney is struggling with the idea. Feige says they won't budge, and it doesn't look like Warner Bros. is changing their release date any time soon. It's a very intense game of chicken, but Disney is starting to show signs of backing down.

Variety reporter Brent Lang tweeted a statement by Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn:

"We'll see. We're struggling with it" Alan Horn on #CaptainAmerica3 debuting against #BatmanvsSuperman

Sounds to me like they might back out. Can you blame them, though? With the success of Captain America: The Winter Solider, the next Cap movie is a huge deal for them. It's hard to tell if it will effect the outcome, but I'd like to think it wouldn't. As a fan of these franchises I'd just go and watch both of them back-to-back in the same day or at least the same weekend. I understand not everyone is as hardcore a fan as me, but I do assume that all those people who want to watch these two movies will eventually go and see them both after they are released. If the studio does decide to move the release date, I'd understand and wouldn't think any less of Marvel. They are still going to release a kick-ass movie regardless.

As of right now, both films are slated for release on May 6th, 2016. Let's see how this game of release date chicken plays out.

FROZEN’s Anna and Elsa Cause Murder and Mayhem in GTA IV Mod

This is one of the most twisted and traumatizing video game mods that I’ve ever come across. Frozen’s valiant and self-sacrificing princesses, Anna and Elsa, turn murderous and wreak havoc on Liberty City in these profanity-laced, blood-filled videos by GTA4-mods. I know Elsa was warned that fear is her enemy, but I don’t think the trolls told her that machine guns are her friend.

HISHE painted a much more joyous ending for these two beloved Disney characters. These videos place the characters in modern times and gives them Matrix-like abilities with guns… lots of guns.

Review: The Joss Whedon Penned IN YOUR EYES Is Charming

0
0

I’m honestly not totally sure how to write about In Your Eyes, the new movie that Joss Whedon surprise-released online like he’s Beyonce. It’s the second feature from director Brin Hill, and he did a really great job with this odd little supernatural romance that was written by Whedon himself. The movie opens with a scene that focuses on two kids. One, a girl named Rebecca, is having a snow day, the other, a boy named Dylan, is at school somewhere warm. The scene cuts between the two — she’s timid and trying to sled, he’s smart but hangs with a bad crowd — until she loses control of her sled and crashes into a tree, which knocks him unconscious, thousands of miles away. Then it picks up maybe twenty years later when she is a doctor’s wife and he is an ex-con on parole, and suddenly they realize that not only do they share sensory experiences, they can talk to each other as well.

Given the premise, and the fact that we are calling it a supernatural romance, which calls to mind something like Twilight or The Vampire Diaries, Hill keeps the film very firmly grounded. It could almost be about two people who met online and constantly FaceTime each other. Almost. Hill smartly keeps the focus on the relationship between the two leads and the real world consequences of their psychic connection, without regard to the whys and hows of the connection’s existence. He also doesn’t overplay the barriers keeping the eventual lovers apart. They are there, and they are obvious, but there isn’t much hand-wringing over their vastly differing circumstances. The whole movie really rests on the audience understanding why the bond becomes so important to the pair, and Hill sets that up expertly.

Zoe Kazan and Michael Stahl-David give bravura performances as the two leads. Most of the movie is them talking to each other as they go about their day, do chores, run errands, etc, which means that for most of the movie Kazan and Stahl-David are having long conversations with no one. Their warm, easy relationship and convincing chemistry is a testament to the nimble work of editor Steven Pilgrim, but the actors also do really great work, making potentially cringe-worthy situations seem adorable, particularly when they are looking through the other’s eyes, which means basically staring at nothing. Of course, their private, unseen interactions spill over into their physical lives, leading to sometimes funny, sometimes unpleasant consequences. It’s not really socially acceptable to talk to yourself, or dance with yourself, or react to a fire no one else can see, especially if you’re an ex-con or have a history of mental instability, and that drives the plot forward in a very aristotelian way.

Whedon’s script is tight and witty. The conflicts rise organically from well-established situations and character traits, not from contrivances. It makes sense that Dylan and Rebecca would retreat into their connection to the point where it has a negative impact on their lives. It makes sense that they don’t just immediately abandon everything to be together. It makes sense that a status-obsessed doctor isn’t going to put up with a crazy wife forever. And considering that so much of the film is just talking, the dialog is great, although Whedon has always done that well. My only complaint is that by keeping the focus so tightly on the film’s main relationship, we get less time with the excellent supporting cast, but that isn’t really a flaw.

Other than Marc Feuerstein, who plays Rebecca’s husband and serves as the principal antagonist, the supporting cast is underused, but I probably wouldn’t complain about that if they weren’t so uniformly excellent. Don’t cast Cress Williams and only give me two scenes with him. I have never been a big fan of hers, but Nikki Reed is a standout as the pleasant but dim Donna. It’s a small part, and she underplays it in a really nice way. Steve Harris is Dylan’s parole officer, and I could have enjoyed a very different movie about his attempt to keep him on the right side of the law. Harris is a unique mix of sanguine and cynical here, and it is interesting to watch in every scene. The aforementioned Feuerstein plays against type here as a total dick, and it works really well. He has a fairly gentle demeanor, so you sometimes almost buy that he’s being kind. But really, nope, he’s a dick.

In Your Eyes is the second release from Bellwether Pictures, the production company Whedon and his wife founded to bring micro budget films straight to audiences. It premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival two days ago and was immediately released on Vimeo on Demand. I get why they did it that way, as finding new avenues to the audience is sort of the raison d’etre of the production company, but the only frustrating part of watching the movie was the occasional pause for buffering. It also would have been nice to see the wide open New Mexican backdrop and the snowy New Hampshire landscapes on a screen larger than my 11” MacBook Air. Other than that, though, I really can’t complain. I found myself smiling almost all the way through.

You can rent the movie now on Vimeo. $5 will let you watch it unlimited times for 72 hours.

Video of "Real" Spider-Man Web-Shooter

Patrick Priebe has created what is essentially a min harpoon gun, paired with a Spider-Man glove, a trigger activated by Spidey's signature hand pose. It's the closest thing the real world has to a web-shooter. You can hear the electromagnetic prolusion mechanism charge before firing the brass tipped harpoon, as it takes a few seconds to charge I don't imagine someone using this for web swinging anytime soon. The web-shooter also has a laser which is great for aiming. I saw a few times where the laser was hitting his hand, without the laser he might have shot himself and maybe he did, adding the laser as a safety feature. If you are interested in getting a custom built web-shooter you can contact Priebe via his Facebook. This is some great and inventive work by Priebe and I can only imagine the number of geeks now thinking of how to improve this. Thanks to Gizmag for sharing.

First Look at Chloe Moretz and Denzel Washington in THE EQUALIZER

first-look-at-chloe-moretz-and-denzel-washington-in-the-equalizer

Thanks to USA Today we have our first look at Chloe Moretz and Denzel Washington in their upcoming crime thriller The Equalizer. I never watched the original TV series that the film is based on, but it sounds like it could make for an awesome movie. We'll no more about what this movie is going to be like as soon as we get a trailer. But, in the meantime here's a few moody photos for you to look over.

Washington plays a former black ops commando who faked his death for a quiet life in Boston. He comes out of his retirement to rescue a young girl, Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz), and finds himself face to face with Russian gangsters.

In an interview with the site director Antoine Fuqua talks about Washington bringing the heat to the vigilante role that he plays saying,

"There's a switch that (Washington) turns on and that's just scary. There's a sustained intensity even in casual mode, like a panther. If it's turned against you, you're going to be in a bad place.

His hand-to-hand work is pretty nasty when the monster comes out. We used what was around him. You'd be surprised what he can do with a corkscrew. You'll never open a bottle of wine the same way again."

Washington and Moretz are both insanely talented actors, and with Training Day director Fuqua at the helm you can bet that it will be solid film.

Len Wiseman to Direct Paranormal Sci-Fi Film BLACK CHAPTER

Underworld and Total Recall director Len Wiseman is set to direct a paranormal sci-fi thriller called Black Chapter

The script was written by Zac Penn (The Incredible Hulk, The Avengers), and the story centers on "an FBI agent who is drawn into a classified military program that trains its operatives to use paranormal abilities."

One of the reasons the film came about is because apparently Wiseman has an interest in secret government programs such as CIA’s astral projection plans. I've looked into this kind of thing myself over the years, and there are some pretty crazy and very cool theories and rumors out there that would make fantastic movie story elements. I can see why Wiseman would want to play around with these ideas.

The movie is set up at Skydance Productions and producer David Ellison had this to say in a statement,

“Len and Zak have created a truly original piece of science fiction that reimagines the spy genre set in the world of the supernatural. This is exactly the type of original story telling that we want to produce.”

This seems like it will be a great project for the director to take on. It sounds like it could be a really fun and entertaining movie. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this film develops.

Great PRINCESS MONONOKE Sketch by Skottie Young

Almost every day comic artist Skottie Young does what he calls a daily sketch to get the drawing juices flowing. They are always really good. He does so many of them, and I've only posted a handful over the years, but I came across this one and I had to share. First of all Princess Mononoke is one of my favorite films from Hayao Miyazaki, and seeing these characters in Young's art style just puts a big smile on my face. I hope you like it.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Spot Features Trask and Toad

At Wondercon this past weekend, we got to see an extended preview of X-Men: Days of Future Past. The sequence we were shown featured the future X-Men battling the evolved, biomechanical Sentinels. This TV spot, however, focuses more on the past side of the time traveling film, giving us new glimpses of Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage), Toad (Evan Jonigkeit), Quicksilver (Evan Peters), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), and more. I’m guessing the scene we were shown at Wondercon will be released as we near the May 23rd release date of the film. So keep an eye out for that as well.

Scientifically Accurate Spongebob Squarepants Animated Video

FOX's Animation Domination has released this great animated video called Scientifically Accurate Spongebob Squarepants. It shows us what the ridiculously silly series would actually be like if it were based on the scientific facts of the shows setting.

Spongebob's show would be a lot less exciting if it took place in the real, scientific world. The ocean is a weird place, full of strange creatures and James Cameron.

My favorite part of the song was when they happily sang the lyric, "Squidward murder."

SON OF BATMAN - The Crowd Gets Confrontational at WonderCon Panel

0
0

I don’t know what was in the water at WonderCon this year, but the animosity from the crowd during the Son of Batman presentation on Saturday was palpable. Had DC Animation’s latest offering been a bad film, perhaps it would have warranted the kinds of questions and challenges the audience were posing. But the movie, which premiered before the panel, was very well done, packing in plenty of humor and lots of surprisingly graphic action (full review coming soon). The audience received it well, but then the Q&A session started and all hell broke loose.

The gracious panel consisted of producer James Tucker, voice director Andrea Romano, character designer Phil Bourassa, and members of the cast including Jason O'Mara (Batman/Bruce Wayne), Stuart Allan (Damian Wayne), Xander Berkeley (Kirk Langstrom), and Sean Maher (Nightwing). There was a lot of love thrown Romano’s way, with every other person thanking her for “their childhood.” But that was always followed up with an unanswerable question/statement or a straight-up slam on DC Animation, their character design, and anything else you could nitpick.

Perhaps they got off on the wrong foot with the filmmakers making countless mentions of cleavage. Or maybe young Stuart Allan’s enthusiasm would have been more infectious had it not felt so unbearably coached and rehearsed — the kid was a walking, talking caricature of a child actor trying to act 10 years older than he is. There are some fun moments peppered throughout, but most of the panel just has to be seen to fully appreciate the awkwardness that took place that day.

Son of Batman will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on May 6th.

PEEPS are Getting their Own Movie!

0

The classic marshmallow holiday treat Peeps are getting a big screen feature film adaptation! These cavity creating candies are always a big hit during Easter, and filmmaker Adam Rifkin (Detroit Rock City, Underdog) must have got a lot of them in his Easter basket last weekend, because he's the guy pushing it into development. I'm sure he looked at them and said to himself... "How have these not been made into a movie yet!?" So he went out, optioned the rights, and has started the long process of bringing them to a movie theater near you.

According to Deadline the film will be animated, and it is described as a "Lego Movie-esque family epic set the night before a Peeps diorama contest, when a wayward Peep gets misplaced and must adventure through the fantasy lands of different-themed dioramas before the contest’s judging begins."

That sounds like it could work. However the movie turns out, the kids are going to love it, and there's a lot of fun marketing ideas that a studio can play with for a franchise like this. This whole thing may sound like a silly idea, but they could make a lot of freakin' money off of it if they play their cards right.

The report also explains that Rifkin got the idea from watching his niece and nephew make their own Peeps diorama for a school project. "That led him to discover the elaborate annual contests hosted by the likes of the Washington Post, whose winning entry this year was a black and white diorama of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s iconic 'I Have A Dream' speech – fashioned, of course, entirely out of the sugar-dusted marshmallows."

I had no idea this world of Peeps existed until now! I think that's fascinating though. He will eventually partner with a studio to make this movie happen. Rifkin will write the script, and this wouldn't be his first time writing a family adventure film either. He previously wrote the films Mouse Hunt and Small Soldiers. He’s currently set to direct a thriller called Director’s Cut that was written by Penn Jillette of Penn and Teller fame.

Look, I love Peeps. I never thought of them as having their own movie, but I really hope they develop something fun out of it.

Silicon Valley Renewed for 2nd Season and Fake Company Website

If you aren't watching Mike Judge's Silicon Valley on HBO you are missing out on a seriously awesome show. It's only a few episodes in so there's still time to catch up without spending a ton of time binge watching.

Earlier this week the cable network announced that they are giving the series a second season. Judging from the promo spots the show looked funny, but I really didn't know what to expect from it because trailers can be deceiving. Now I'm hooked, and I hope it doesn't end anytime soon.

The story centers on a character named Richard, an introverted computer programmer who manages to entice a bidding war over his search algorithm. The show is described as being "rather merciless in its focus on Silicon Valley and all it entails, both in reality and in stereotype."

A fake website was also recently launched for the fictional tech company in the show, Pied Piper. You can check the site out here. The fake product they are developing is described as follows:

“Pied Piper is a multi-platform technology based on a proprietary universal compression algorithm that has consistently fielded high Weisman Scores™ that are not merely competitive, but approach the theoretical limit of lossless compression”

The series is partially inspired by Judge’s own experiences as a Silicon Valley engineer in the late ‘80s. The cast includes Thomas Middleditch, T.J. Miller, Zach Woods, Kumail Nanjiani, Martin Starr, Josh Brener, Amanda Crew and the late Christopher Evan Welch.

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON — Robert Downey Jr. Set Photo

So far we've seen "leaked" photos from Avengers: Age of Ultron, but this might be the first official photo we've got. It's of Robert Downey Jr. and executive producer Jeremy Latcham. They are both wearing protective vests but not helmets, so while there is construction going on, but it must not be heavy construction. Downey is rocking a purple jacket and a ponderous pose. This photo comes from Downey's Twitter, so maybe he'll tweet more set photos in the future.

Avengers: Age of Ultron will dominate the world May 1st, 2015.

Fantastic Coming-of-Age Comedy Short - FOUREYES

fantastic-coming-of-age-comedy-short-foureyes

Writer and director Conor Byrne has made a very funny and sexually goofy coming-of-age comedy short called Foureyes that you've got to watch when you have a chance. The film stars a young actor named Jake Ryan (Inside Llewyn Davis, Moonrise Kingdom) as Bobby Bowersox, a 10-year-old boy who is "thrust into the tumultuous world of puberty when he gets a new pair of eyeglasses." The story, script and acting are all solid, and the movie was shot very well. This short is a great example of excellent filmmaking, and one I think you'll enjoy. There's a little bit of nudity in it, so you might want to consider it NSFW.

FLASH GORDON Movie Picked up By Fox

flash-gordon-movie-picked-up-by-fox

Last week it was reported that Star Trek 3 scribes JD Payne and Patrick McKay were hired to write a script for the long awaited Flash Gordon reboot. They have been shopping the project around to studios, and it looks like it has found a home.

THR reports that Twentieth Century Fox has picked up the rights to the classic comic, and they will be moving forward with its development.

I may not be a big fan of remakes, and I loved the original movie, but I've been wanting to see an updated version of Flash Gordon for a long time. With how far technology has come since the first one, this thing could be a spectacular looking sci-fi adventure. Hopefully Payne and McKay have what it takes to deliver a fun story and solid script.

Flash was created in 1934 by iconic artist Alex Raymond, and the story follows Dale Arden and the mad scientist Hans Zasrkov, as they end up on the planet Mongo fighting a tyrannical ruler named Ming the Merciless.

It was previously reported that the "pitch goes right back to the original Raymond comic strips and sidesteps any association with the movie, and even the serials." The idea, "is to reclaim Flash Gordon from his current reputation in the way that Tim Burton redirected the public conception of Batman."

My question to you is would you like this movie to see more of a serious dark tone, or would you like to see a little classic throwback cheesiness thrown into the mix?

Live-Action BARBIE Movie In Development at Sony

Of course a Barbie movie was going to eventually happen, and this isn't the first attempt to get the classic kids toy line to the big screen. Back in 2009 Universal Pictures was set to adapt it, but for one reason or another it fell apart. Mattel has now set up the project at Sony Pictures, and the plan is to give is a live-action adaptation. The studio is looking to start shooting the film by the end of the year, from a script written by Jenny Bicks. She was a writer on the HBO series Sex in the City, and also wrote the film What a Girl Wants, so I guess she's qualified to write a movie about Barbie.

Obviously I was never a big fan of Barbie's, but I did get one as a gift for Christmas once when I was a kid as a joke my uncle played on me. It gave the family a good life, but I was not amused at all.

There's no information on what the story will entail, but I'm sure it will be another big hit for the studio. Columbia Pictures’ president of production Hannah Minghella had this to say,

“We’ve always thought that the Barbie story had great potential, but a universe of possibilities opened up when Jenny, Walter and Laurie brought us their unexpected, clever, and truly funny concept. It captures everything that has made Barbie a classic for generation after generation while also standing on its own, establishing Barbie as a truly original screen character.”

The production company behind the film, Parkes + MacDonald released the following statement:

“While it’s an overused word, Barbie truly is a legend, a cultural symbol whose career choices have been as unlimited as her wardrobe. She is about empowerment, but never at the expense of fun. Our hope is to capture all of these aspects of Barbie in a modern take of the character that can appeal to moviegoers of all ages.”

I'm sure this news will make Barbie fans very happy.
