Christopher Nolan Talks INTERSTELLAR and the Giant Ship Interiors he Built for It

christopher-nolan-talks-interstellar-and-the-giant-ship-interiors-he-built-for-it

Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan was a guest at CinemaCon this week. While there, he talked about his new film Interstellar. We still know very little about this film, and Nolan wants to keep it that way. He doesn't offer a lot of details, but he does say that he built practical, full-size spaceship interiors to shoot the film, which is really freakin' cool. He also discusses the character that Matthew McConaughey plays as well as interstellar travel and wormholes.

During the moderated event he touched on several other different aspects of the film and cinema-related ideas. Thanks to io9 we have a few quotes from the visionary director. Read what he had to say below.

Can you describe the kind of role [Matthew McConaughey] plays in Interstellar?

I can't really say much, at all, with the film right now. We're in a fairly early stage because we're coming out in November. This is going to take a bit more to finish the visual effects [on Interstellar]. I can't say too much about the plot of the film. But the character that he's playing playing, I needed someone who is very much an everyman. Very much somebody who the audience could experience the story with, be right there beside him experiencing these very extraordinary events in the film and seeing it through his eyes. Somebody really relatable. And I think Matthew really has those qualities — he's just a phenomenal character and presence in the movie. The performance is shaping out to be something extraordinary.

I understand that on Interstellar you made a decision to use practical locations as much as possible. Rather than CG, what drove that decision?

Many of the films I've tried to do, whether it was the Dark Knight films or Inception that are both very fanciful environments, Interstellar is very much the same vein in regards to that. I always felt that shooting in the real location and trying to capture as much in camera as possible, it maximizes the tack top of the film.

Things really happening, things really being there, it really pays off in terms of the excitement of what you're. What it allows you to do, is then you can involve your visual effects team who come along with all kind of innovative approaches in terms of CG and miniatures, and whatever else you're using. But if you've given them something in camera, then [you receive something of a] much higher quality than if you just shoot a green screen stage, and just throw it to them make it beautiful. You get a lot more out of that with visual effects if you really put the work in.

Can you give an example from the film, that could have been shot CG and you wanted to do it practical?

Well I don't want to say too much about the film. But the one thing that I am happy to talk about briefly, we have spaceship interiors on the film. We wanted to have the real environments the actors were going to be seeing out the windows. We built closed sets of the scale that this ships would be at, we put the reality outside for the actors so we could shoot it like a documentary, like you were really there.

I think it paid huge dividends for the actors in terms of performance and being able to understand what we were doing. … It allowed our Director of Photography and myself to shoot like a documentary, putting the people in real environments. That was a tremendously exciting thing to be able to do. But that's the only thing I'm going to say.

About the discovery of a wormhole through which travelers can go and discover a new land, to make new discoveries. It sounds like time travel film…

It's about interstellar travel. Kip Throne is an executive producer on the project — he's a very brilliant scientist whose dealt with the modern science of wormholes, in particular. He was in from the beginning of the project and he's been an incredible ally. Really it's about wormhole travel to other places we can't reach through normal travel through space, because their time spans far beyond anything you can do. Without saying too much about the plot or the rest of the tone of the film. It's something I've been interested in getting to in my work. It's very different, for me it's been an interesting challenge, I'm really enjoying it.

I grew up in the era that was really a golden age of the blockbuster, when something being a family film didn't have any pejorative connotations. It could be broad-based and very universal in its appeal. I feel like that's something I want to see again, something I want to explore in the tone of this film. Something that really looks at where we are as people, where we might go and how the universe balances the human experience, and really try to not be a film, and try and be an experience people carry with them. And for me it's about harkening back to the films I grew up with and took me to places I'd never imagined.

Now Hear Me Out: Michael Bay is an Excellent Director

michael-bay-transformers4622.jpg

Michael Bay has been around for a while and his movies are always so divisive. Some say he ruined Transformers, others say he is about to ruin the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. To be clear though he is only producing — nobody blames Steven Spielberg for Transformers so why should we blame Bay if TMNT isn't any good?

I believe Michael Bay gives us what we want regardless of whether we actually want to admit it. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who is partly responsible with getting Bay in the spotlight, has said,

“Michael knows what audiences like, because he’s one of them. He has a strong sense of what makes a thrilling, entertaining movie ... just when the audience thinks they’ve seen it all, Michael gives them even more.”

We in the geek community like to hate on Bay's Transformers franchise, rolling our collective eyes whenever a new Transformers film comes around. But the last one made over a billion dollars, so there are people paying to see it — I'll admit I am one of those people. Bay's Transformers films have all made over half a billion dollars each with the most recent one, Dark of the Moon, actually surpassing the billion dollar mark. Now I'm not saying that just because his movies make money that means their good, but they have something that gets us in the theater and I highly doubt it's Shia LaBeouf. Even Armageddon, one of my least favorite films, surpassed the half billion dollar mark, and that was an original property.

I have highly enjoyed Bay's films. They are full of over the top spectacle that I've come to expect and look forward to when watching his films. Steven Spielberg put it pretty well when he said,

"[Bay] has the best eye for multiple levels of pure visual adrenaline."

Now I'm not saying that every Michael Bay film is good. I really disliked Pearl Harbor and Revenge of the Fallen was clearly a misstep in the Transformers franchise. But overall Bay has a good track record.

Sometimes a movie with massive amounts of action and spectacle is just good fun. Not to say that Bay cannot craft a well written film. His most recent endeavor, Pain & Gain, was one of my favorite films of last year.  It harkened back to Bay's old school films like Bad Boys, proving that Bay doesn't need exploding robots to make an entertaining film.

Lastly, I'd like to discuss The Rock. That film was made in 1996 but has the two main hallmarks of an 80's B-Movie, an absurd plot and over the top characters — also, Nic Cage is in it and you can't beat Nic Cage. Whenever I watch The Rock I wish Hollywood would make more of these insane yet original movies.

Bay is not without his critics and to those that say Bay ruined their childhood I could not disagree more. Regardless of whether or not you hate the live action Transformers films, the cartoons still hold up, the comic books are still fun, and they don't stop being awesome. I love going back and rewatching the classic cartoon and even some of the newer stuff is pretty decent and Bay's version of Transformers doesn't rob me of that enjoyment.

Michael Bay has been called a lot of things: an auteur by fellow directors and critics (which I may tend to agree with), "Hitler" by Megan Fox, and "childhood ruiner" by geeks. I don't think he deserves nearly the amount of hate he gets so I just refer to him as Michael Bay.

I've been following this sci-fi short film Prospect for awhile now. Over the last year we've seen some test footage and a trailer for it, but the full short is now available online to watch, and it turned out great! The short was directed by Zeek Earl and Chris Caldwell, and it recently premiered at SXSW. The short was funded through Kickstarter, and here's a little plot summary.

Prospect is the coming-of-age story of a teenage girl on a toxic alien planet. She and her father hunt for precious materials, aiming to strike it rich. When the father is attacked by a roving bandit, the daughter must take control.

DreamWorks Animation released a clip from How to Train Your Dragon 2 called "Itchy Armpit." It shows Hiccup and Toothless on a journey to map out new territories and name them.

The thrilling second chapter of the epic HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON trilogy brings us back to the fantastical world of Hiccup and Toothless five years after the two have successfully united dragons and vikings on the island of Berk. While Astrid, Snoutlout and the rest of the gang are challenging each other to dragon races (the island's new favorite contact sport), the now inseparable pair journey through the skies, charting unmapped territories and exploring new worlds. When one of their adventures leads to the discovery of a secret ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider, the two friends find themselves at the center of a battle to protect the peace. Now, Hiccup and Toothless must unite to stand up for what they believe while recognizing that only together do they have the power to change the future of both men and dragons.

The movie is set to be released in theaters on June 13th.

Could Justin Lin Direct COMMUNITY The Movie?

$

Community-Season-5.jpg

Six seasons and a movie started out as a joke by Abed (Danny Pudi) from an episode in the second season of Community. Now it looks like after all these years and through all the drama that could become a reality. NBC is five seasons in, and the network is contemplating a sixth. If that happens we could very well see that movie happen as well.

TV Guide reports that Justin Lin is one director that has been considered to direct the film. On top of directing several films for the Fast and Furious franchise Lin also directed several episodes of Community

If for some reason Lin can't do it, there's a lot of other directors that could come on board such as Captain America: The Winter Solider directors Joe and Anthony Russo. They served as executive producers on Community, and Joe Russo directed last week's Advanced Advanced Dungeons & Dragons episode. Then there's also Jay Chandrasekhar (Super Troopers) who also directed some episodes.

TV Guide reports that Sony and NBC insiders say "they're optimistic that a final, 13-episode season is in the cards for Community, especially given the network's inability this season to successfully launch any new comedies on Thursday night."

Series creator Dan Harmon has been very vocal about making six season and a movie happen, and it looks like it's getting close. In a previous interview with Hitfix Harmon said,

"If the movie has to be made out of clay and duct tape in my basement, then that's how the movie will be made, because there has to be closure. The title of the book about the show is not Community, An Interesting Journey into a Show No One Ever Watched. The title of the book is obviously going to be, Six Seasons and a Movie."

I'm looking forward to seeing how this all plays out. It's looking good!

Warner Bros. has released a terrifyingly intense teaser trailer for their tornado movie Into The Storm. This trailer gave me Twister flashbacks, only the effects are a lot better, and it look a lot more crazy. The film was directed by James Cameron protege Steven Quale (Final Destination 5), and the movie stars Richard Armitage, Sarah Wayne Callies, Matt Walsh, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Arlen Escarpeta, Max Deacon, Nathan Kress, Jeremy Sumpter, Kyle Davis, Jon Reep, and Scott Lawrence. Here's the synopsis:

In the span of a single day, the town of Silverton is ravaged by an unprecedented onslaught of tornadoes. The entire town is at the mercy of the erratic and deadly cyclones, even as storm trackers predict the worst is yet to come. Most people seek shelter, while others run towards the vortex, testing how far a storm chaser will go for that once-in-a-lifetime shot.

Told through the eyes and lenses of professional storm chasers, thrill-seeking amateurs, and courageous townspeople, "Into the Storm" throws you directly into the eye of the storm to experience Mother Nature at her most extreme.

The movie is set to be released in theaters on August 8th.

BATMAN'S 75th Anniversary Plans Revealed by DC Comics and Warner Bros.

In celebration of the 75th anniversary of Batman, Warner Bros. and DC Comics have planned out a year long celebration! Below you will find a press release with all of the details for the celebration. They've got a lot going on! It's going to be an awesome year of all kinds of Batman greatness.

To mark the milestone 75th anniversary of DC Comics’ Batman, Warner Bros. Entertainment and DC Entertainment have revealed plans for a year-long celebration befitting the world’s most popular Super Hero. Highlights of the anniversary program, which starts today, include a new commemorative 75th anniversary Batman logo and an exclusive “Cape/Cowl/Create” art exhibit, featuring 20 contemporary artists’ interpretation of The Dark Knight’s iconic cowl headpiece and cape from the upcoming Batman: Arkham Knight videogame. There will also be 75th anniversary-related activities across all of Warner Bros. Entertainment throughout the year.

First appearing in the comic book Detective Comics #27, which hit newsstands on March 30, 1939, featuring artwork by Bob Kane and a script by Bill Finger, Batman emerged from the shadows to become the world’s most popular Super Hero and dominate all media. In feature films, TV shows, radio, video games, publishing and merchandise, this most human of Super Heroes has battled some of fiction’s greatest villains using his intellect, cunning and an arsenal of gadgets to further his quest for justice.

“Batman is an incredibly important property with multi-generational appeal across all of the Studio’s businesses, and we’re proud to celebrate this milestone anniversary,” said Kevin Tsujihara, Chief Executive Officer, Warner Bros. Entertainment. “From billion-dollar blockbuster films to TV, home entertainment, video games and consumer products, The Dark Knight continues to resonate with audiences worldwide and rightfully deserves his place as a global pop culture icon for the ages.”

Batman is the single most successful Super Hero film franchise in history and there have been more theatrical movies released based on Batman than any other comic book character. In video games, the Batman Arkham franchise is also the most successful Super Hero game concept ever. Batman consistently breaks records in every incarnation of his character and remains the gold standard by which all other comic book sales are measured.

“Batman is one of the greatest characters ever created, in comics or elsewhere, and even after 75 years he continues to wildly fascinate fans. He is an integral part of pop culture and has successfully captured the imagination of the entire world,” said Diane Nelson, President of DC Entertainment and President & Chief Content Officer, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “The origin of Batman, Bruce Wayne and the famous citizens of Gotham are legendary and likely a story you know inside out, even if you’ve never picked up a comic book in your life, and that speaks volumes to the character’s immense popularity and the constructs of the original mythology.”

The first published adventure of The Bat-Man (as he was then known) was in the May 1939 issue of Detective Comics #27, conceived of and drawn by a 22-year-old Kane with his frequent collaborator, Bill Finger, scripting the story. The character was so successful, that one year later the first comic book devoted exclusively to the Caped Crusader’s adventures, Batman #1, hit newsstands. In that issue, Batman battled The Joker and Catwoman for the first time.

Now, DC Entertainment and the Studio’s various divisions, including Pictures, Television, Animation, Interactive Entertainment, Home Entertainment and Consumer Products, will mark this extraordinary 75th anniversary with a range of highly anticipated events and products.

The new commemorative logo, also released today across social media and websites, takes its cue from the famed Bat symbol, and features block-style lettering of “75 Years.” The mark will be rolled out on Batman-related promotions, products and initiatives.

Key activities planned for the Batman 75th anniversary celebration include:

New52BatmanDC Entertainment – DC Entertainment has an action-packed year filled with new Batman titles, commemorative issues and variant covers, including the recently released special edition of Detective Comics #27 commemorating Batman’s first appearance in the book in 1939, the new weekly series Batman Eternal launching April 9, and upcoming exclusive Batman variant covers planned for San Diego Comic-Con International in July.

Batman Day – DC Entertainment is also partnering with thousands of comic retailers, book stores and libraries for “Batman Day” on Wednesday, July 23. Each location will host a Batman 75th anniversary celebration and offer fans a free, special edition Batman comic.

Interactive Entertainment – Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has invited celebrated fashion designer Asher Levine to create a cape and cowl based on the Batsuit of the recently announced Batman: Arkham Knight videogame developed by Rocksteady Studios. Favorite contemporary artists will have the opportunity to use the replicas as a blank canvas to produce their own, original interpretations of Batman’s iconic attire for an all new “Cape/Cowl/Create” art exhibit that will be showcased at San Diego Comic-Con International in July.

Home Entertainment – Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will bring fans an array of new Batman titles throughout the year, including the highly anticipated release of the Batman ’66 TV series for the first time ever. Other new releases include animated films Son of Batman (May 6) and Assault on Arkham (summer 2014). Additionally, a 25th Anniversary Edition of Tim Burton’s Batman feature film will be released in the fall.

Animation – Warner Bros. Animation has created two all-new Batman animated shorts set for debut in April, with fan-favorite producers Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series) and Darwyn Cooke (Batman Beyond) each presenting a unique and familiar take on the Batman animated universe. In addition, Timm will participate in a Batman 75th all-star panel at WonderCon in Anaheim on Saturday, April 19, which will also feature an exclusive premiere of Cooke’s animated short based upon Batman Beyond.

Television – Warner Bros. Television is in production on the pilot episode of the highly anticipated Gotham, a new one-hour drama for FOX which explores the origin stories of eventual police commissioner James Gordon and the villains that made Gotham City famous. In Gotham, Detective Gordon (Ben McKenzie – Southland) will encounter a familiar cast of characters – including a young Bruce Wayne – as he fights to keep the city safe. Executive producer Bruce Heller (The Mentalist, Rome) wrote the pilot, which is being directed by executive producer Danny Cannon (CSI series, Nikita).

Pictures – As Batman’s 75th anniversary is celebrated in 2014, Warner Bros. Pictures will begin production of Zack Snyder’s untitled Superman/Batman film starring Henry Cavill, who reprises his role as Superman/Clark Kent, and Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne. The film, slated for release summer 2016, will bring the two most iconic Super Heroes of all time together for the first time on the big screen.

Consumer Products – Warner Bros. Consumer Products has partnered with an array of licensees to celebrate Batman’s 75th Anniversary through special edition and limited-release products. From the classic 1960s TV series to modern day comics, Batman’s presence will be larger than ever in celebration of his legacy through everything from toys to t-shirts.

DCComics.com – For the latest information and exclusive content celebrating Batman’s 75th anniversary, visit Batman75.com. The dedicated section on DC Comics’ website launches today with the Batman 75 Sweepstakes which offers one lucky fan a one-of-a-kind prize package.

Here's an incredibly fun series of videos featuring a dad filming his son doing some extraordinary action hero type things. The series is called Action Movie Kid, and it comes from DreamWorks animator Daniel Hashimoto, and his son James. Hashimoto used After Effects to create the movie magic, and this is what he said to The Creators Project about the inspiration for the idea,

"Upon viewing the lightsaber and Iron Man videos. My son replied, 'Why if I did that for real-sies, Dad?'"

These videos are adorably cool, and I have no doubt that you're going to like what you see.

Teaser Trailer for PHANTASM V: RAVAGER

Would you look at this! Filmmaker Don Coscarelli has made a fifth Phantasm movie called Phantasm V: Ravager, and he even released a teaser trailer. He's managed to keep the production of the film under warps for two years. It's really cool to see the Tall Man back.

The franchise started in 1979 under the direction of Coscarelli, he is a producer on this fifth film, but it was directed David Hartman, whobest known for animated series such as Transformers Prime and Roughnecks: Starship Troopers.

Original cast members Michael Baldwin, Bill Thornbury, Kat Lester, and Angus Scrimm are back as is Reggie Bannister as Reggie, whose decades-long search for the sinister Tall Man leads him to the Tall Man’s home world.

In an interview with EW, Coscarelli had this to say,

“I felt it was time to let someone else play with my train set. David and I go back to my film Bubba Ho-Tep. He did terrific visual effects on that, and more recently created a wild animated sequence and some amazing visual effects in my most recent film, John Dies at the End. Our aesthetics are in sync and he’s quite an experienced director in his own right.”

Hartman went on to say,

“Having worked with Don before, and being a huge fan of the entire Phantasm franchise, it was a great honor to do Ravager with him. This film is a real turning point in the series. There’s real closure for the core characters that I hope fans will respond to.”

I'm sure fans will be very happy with what they see in this teaser trailer.

SABOTAGE - Movie Review

High-tension action with an even higher body count.

High-tension action with an even higher body count.

Arnold Schwarzenegger takes top billing for only the second time since ending his political career, and finally seems to be comfortable in front of the camera. Arnold is joined by a great ensemble cast, with the likes of Sam Worthington (Avatar, Wrath of the Titans), Terrence Howard (Hustle & Flow, Iron Man), and Joe Manganiello (True Blood, Magic Mike). They all have great on-screen chemistry and are very convincing as a tight-knit group of DEA task force agents that have worked together for a long time.

David Ayer takes the reigns as director of this action thriller.  Sabotage only marks Ayer’s fourth time directing a feature film, but it has the similar raw and visceral look of his previous two movies, End of Watch and Street Kings.  Ayer, who is mostly known for his writing (The Fast and the Furious, Training Day, End of Watch), also penned the script with Skip Woods (The A-Team, X-Men Origins: Wolverine).

Schwarzenegger’s character, John “Breacher,” is the leader of a ragtag DEA task force known for bringing down major players in the Mexican drug cartel.  Breacher runs a tight operation, but his world is turned upside down when a Mexican drug lord kidnaps and kills his wife and son. Things take a turn for the worse when he and his men steal millions during a drug raid.  His team starts to fall apart when the DEA starts investigating Breacher’s guys for the theft, and one-by-one members of his task force start turning up dead. With the help of a local Homicide Detective (Olivia Williams), Breacher must protect his teammates from a very violent demise while he tries to find out who is hunting them down.

Sabotage is a good addition to Schwarzenegger’s action library, with a hard “R” rating; the movie has a high body count, with violence on par with many of his beloved action movies from the '80s and '90s. With few exceptions, the action looked very realistic. One sequence in particular was so over-the-top, it was actually laughably unrealistic.  But then again, this is an Arnold Schwarzenegger action flick, and when has anyone deducted points for cheesiness?

Sabotage delivers on everything you would expect from a Schwarzenegger movie, intense action, graphic violence and one-liners with an Austrian accent.  The movie does however try a little too hard to be a murder mystery, when it would have been more enjoyable as a straight forward heist gone-wrong movie.  The twist ending felt forced and seemed too easy, it didn’t exactly work. But if you love action, Sabotage will not disappoint. There is no urgent reason to see this one in theaters and there is nothing overly original about it. You won't regret waiting to rent this one.
