The Official Rules Of Spoilers For Movies And TV

$
0
0

Spoilers. Things have been spoiled for you, and try as you might to deny it, you've spoiled things for others. It's frustrating, saddening, and gives you that feeling in the stomach that you want to punch somebody. You want to, but know it would be very uncouth to punch a buddy over a movie, so instead you focus your aggression towards the movie, ergo ruining your cinematic experience.

Spoiler- any element of any summary or description of any piece of fiction that reveals any plot element which will give away the outcome of a dramatic episode within the work of fiction, or the conclusion of the entire work. It can also be used to refer to any piece of information regarding any part of a given media. Because enjoyment of fiction sometimes depends upon the dramatic tension and suspense which arises within it, the external revelation of such plot elements can "spoil" the enjoyment that some consumers of the narrative would otherwise have experienced.

As geeks we encounter spoilers every day (some of us more than others), and as geeks we get mad when things are spoiled for us (some of us more than others). I may be making a bit of a stretch here, but if your geek circles are like mine, you have that one friend who recklessly drops spoilers without warning (coined S-Bombing). If I may stretch a little further, you also have a friend who is always stymieing conversation amongst the herd as he still has not watched many of the things you guys started talking about years ago (called Tubesee as they are often cite being "too busy" as their reason for not watching).

Both are equally annoying, and both need taken care of. In this brave new digital age, information travels fast, and movie plots can be ruined before they even begin filming. Let this guide serve to establish an etiquette of sorts to stop S-bombers and Tubesees from ruining and griping and get entertainment to where it was before we had the internet. A discussion.

When is it okay to discuss....

**Movies**

  • Movie Is Still In Production/Post-Production- This is already typically solved by the huge SPOILER text you see often on film sites. Despite this things still slip through the cracks and writers unintentionally reveal secrets. The best advice I can give is get off the internet if you are interested enough to search for your movie but not enough to know the details. It goes without saying that unless prompted, you don't talk about these details in open discussion, and always stop if someone asks.
  • Movie Is in Theaters- This largely depends on popularity. If the plot is non-essential to enjoyment of the film, then go ahead and say it. If it's in the trailer, go ahead it can't hurt no one. Never, however, reveal anything that resulted in your primary enjoyment of the film in detail...especially if it lead to your reason of discussion in the first place. Be general, people will appreciate you more.
  • Movie Is On DVD- At this point I believe it's fair to say after 2 months, it's officially open season for discussion. This is especially true on movies that have received a lot of hype, you can't really shield yourself at this point. It's a ticking time bomb and it's your responsibility to watch it if you truly want to see it. Plus by this point, you likely already know the story and just keep telling yourself you don't. Denial is not the answer.
  • Movie is on TV- Grow up.

**Television**

  • Series on national television-The biggest distinction between this and cable is that everyone watches it. If you aren't on board to keep up with the rest of the world when it airs, then you don't really care that much. It is in my experience that most interested parties of these shows even if they miss it's airing will usually watch it at their first chance to do so. Asking to refrain within a couple days is appropriate, but get on it because next week will arrive before you know it.
  • Series on cable television- Remember the kind of loyal television watcher you were before DVR? You actually had to schedule your day around your TV and not the other way around? Recording entire series is the worst enemy to people who hate Tubesees. They can always cop out and leave it for a rainy, undetermined Saturday to commit the time they don't have to a show they clearly aren't all that passionate about. This is the muckiest grey area on the list in all honesty, and my best advice is to just not discuss the show if you don't want spoilers revealed.
  • Series on subscription television- Everyone loves Dexter, but not everyone loves paying for Showtime. Not everyone can afford these channels as well, which makes the timeframe for spoiler discussion much longer, but let's not be hasty. I believe it is totally fair that if a 2nd season of a show is released on DVD then it becomes fair to discuss the previous season as there has been ample time for the non-viewing party to watch the first. Of course if the series is only one season, then don't discuss it at length.

******THE IGNORANCE CLAUSE********

Let it be known from this point on that someone's lack of knowledge about any show and or movie immediately exempts them from the above rules. Only the guilty shall be punished. Unlike our law system, as passionate film goers we shall be respectful to those less educated than us on cinema.

*******************************

I believe these rulings are fair enough. As Geektyrants we have a responsibility to uphold where debate and discussion reign supreme. Sticking to these rules helps ensure responsibility on both sides of the spoiler spectrum (from Tubesees to S-Bombers) and helps avoid annoying conversation enders. Stick to these rules and you can't go wrong. Anything you would like to add? Post it below as we might be turning it into an infographic in the future.

Red Band Trailer for THAT'S MY BOY Starring Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg

Wait a second... Adam Sandler has made a film that actually gets a Red-Band trailer? Yep, Sony Pictures has released a red-band trailer for a new comedy with Sandler and Andy Samberg called That's My Boy. The film also stars Leighton Meester, James Caan, Eva Amurri, Susan Sarandon, Milo Ventimiglia, Will Forte, Colin Quinn, Todd Bridges, Vanilla Ice, and Ian Ziering.

It's been a hell of a long time since we've seen Sandler get raunchy, but as you will see in this trailer, he brings back the Sandler that we all remember from the 90's, only a bit more filthy. This trailer is most definitely NSFW, as it contains foul language and some nudity.

Here's the Synopsis:

While still in his teens, Donny (Adam Sandler) fathered a son, Todd (Andy Samberg), and raised him as a single parent up until Todd's 18th birthday. Now, after not seeing each other for years, Todd’s world comes crashing down on the eve of his wedding when an uninvited Donny suddenly shows up. Trying desperately to reconnect with his son, Donny is now forced to deal with the repercussions of his bad parenting skills.

The movie is set to be released on June 15th, 2012. Does this look like an Adam Sandler movie you might enjoy?

BLOODSHOT Comic To Get Feature Film Adaptation

Sony Pictures will be developing a big screen adaptation of the 1992 Valiant comic book series Bloodshot. The studio has brought on Neal Moritz to produce the film and hired Jeff Wadlow (Prey) to write it. X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn was at one point rumored to direct, but according to Deadline, that's not true.

I read this comic growing up, but I remember the images more than I do the story, which follows a character named "Angelo Mortalli, a ruthless killer for the mob who is set up by the family and framed for a murder. He instead goes into Witness Protection, but is betrayed by an FBI agent guarding him, kidnapped and forcibly subjected to an experimental program in which his body is injected with microscopic computers called nanites. They erase his brain and rebuild it and his body to be a weapon with superhuman strength and healing powers. Bloodshot escapes his makers, and though he isn’t his old self, he tries to figure out who he was. Things get bad for everybody who betrayed him."

I can see this being turned into a cool film that I would enjoy. I guess it all depends on who they bring one board to direct and star in it. Who would you like to see direct the movie and play the lead character?

Watch THE CHASE CG Animated Action Short Film

Here's a wonderful animated short action film created by Tomas Vergara, who describes himself as a self taught 3D artist and film nut. Here's what he had to say about making the animated short:

I left my full time job in advertising to produce The Chase, my first personal project, completed in an isolated cabin in the woods. It took me 6 months to produce, but 8 in total to complete because of slow render times. My budget was US $700.

I've got to say the short turned out extremely well and I thought is was entertaining enough to share with you all. I hope he ends up getting some kind of gig in the near future because of this film he created. The story follows a simple hitman job where things don't go as expected. There's some pretty cool sequences in it. Watch the short below, and let us know what you think!

MUPPETS Sequel Moving Forward Without Jason Segel

Disney is moving forward with a sequel to the recent Muppet film, which isn't really a surprise, since the movie ended up doing very well. Vulture is reporting that the studio has closed a deal with The Muppets director James Bobin and co-writer of the last film Nicholas Stoller. Unfortunately, Jason Segel won't be back to help bring the story to life, which is a shame as he was the head cheerleader for the first film.

It's not that Disney didn't want him back, the guy just doesn't have the time to fit it in his busy schedule. He's currently working on the eight season of How I Met Your Mother and has a ton of other films that he's developing on his plate, such as Five Year Engagement and Judd Apatow's This Is Forty. I'm sure a Muppets sequel will be fine without him.

Now, there is a chance that Segel could return to star in the sequel, but that all depends on the script that that Stoller and Bobin pump out. Will it be good enough for the studio to want to move forward with, and will Segel's character even be written in? I'm sure well find out soon enough.

Would you be interested in a Muppets sequel without Segel's involvement?

21 JUMP STREET - Red-Band Trailer and Clip

I'm surprisingly looking forward to this 21 Jump Street adaptation. It looks like it will be pretty funny. The movie was directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs) and stars Jonah HillChanning Tatum, Brie Larsonand Ice Cube, with a cameo by Johnny Depp, which should be fun and interesting to see.

Here's the Synopsis:

In the action-comedy 21 Jump Street, Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) are more than ready to leave their adolescent problems behind. Joining the police force and the secret Jump Street unit, they use their youthful appearances to go undercover in a local high school. As they trade in their guns and badges for backpacks, Schmidt and Jenko risk their lives to investigate a violent and dangerous drug ring. But they find that high school is nothing like they left it just a few years earlier – and neither expects that they will have to confront the terror and anxiety of being a teenager again and all the issues they thought they had left behind.

21 Jump Street is set to be released on March 16th, 2012. What's the main selling point of this movie for you? Does it even have a selling point?

The clip below features Jonah Hill getting crazy and violent with an old lady friend in a shoe store.

THE HUNGER GAMES Film Clip - Shoot the Pig

Here's the first film clip for Gary Ross' The Hunger Games! It's called "Shoot the Pig," and it features Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) making her badass presence known in the training center by shooting an apple from a pig's mouth while a little dinner party is going on. I've attempted shooting a bow and arrow in the past, and I jacked up my arm pretty bad. I was obviously doing it wrong. Crossbows are much easier to use.

The movie is set to be released on March 23rd, 2012. Watch the film clip and tell us what you think! Have you ever dabbled in archery or shot a crossbow?

The movie has a wonderful large cast of actors that includes Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, Wes Bentley, Toby Jones, Amandla Stenberg, Alexander Ludwig, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jacqueline Emerson, Paula Malcomson, Dayo Okeniyi, Jack Quaid, Leven Rambin, Willow Shields, and Lenny Kravitz

Here's the Synopsis:

Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the evil Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. A twisted punishment for a past uprising and an ongoing government intimidation tactic, The Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which "Tributes" must fight with one another until one survivor remains. Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she's ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love. THE HUNGER GAMES is directed by Gary Ross, and produced by Nina Jacobson's Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. Suzanne Collins' best-selling novel, the first in a trilogy published by Scholastic that has over 16 million copies in print in the United States alone, has developed a massive global following.

Marvel has released two new images featuring Cobie Smulders as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill in The Avengers. This is the best look we've had at her character so far, and she looks great. I'm looking forward to seeing her character in action. In a previous interview she described the character saying that "she has superpowers and is hyperintelligent; a very nice, fine woman who has all the answers."

Check out the images and hit us up with your thoughts!

Mila Kunis Cast in HELL AND BACK

The beautiful Mila Kunis is set to star in an interesting R-rated stop-motion animated comedy called Hell and Back. The story follows a couple of friends who have to rescue another friend that was accidentally dragged down to hell.

Deadline reports that Kunis will play a "female demon whose ability to navigate the underworld makes her the toughest rogue demon in Hell. Her independent streak comes from the fact she’s half human. She was sired by the Orpheus of myth when he traveled down the River Styx, nailing everything in sight." Sounds like a fun and crazy adventure.

Kunis will join Nick Swardson, TJ Miller, Rob Riggle, Brian Posehn, and Kumail Najiani, who were all previously cast. Tommy Gianas and Ross Shuman are directing the film.

Kunis just finished shooting Sam Rami's Oz: The Great and Powerful for Disney as well as the Seth MacFarlane-directed comedy TED for Universal.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES - Radical Stop-Motion Intro!

You've got to check out this totally awesome stop-motion animated intro to the classic animated series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! I didn't know what to expect when I first saw this in my email inbox, but when I watched it I was completely blown away and had to share it with you. This video is very well done, and fun to watch. It made me want to go back and revisit the orginal series. It was created by Kyle Roberts and here's a note on their YouTube page:

With over 4,000 individual pictures, Kyle Roberts and crew wanted to recreate the nostalgic 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon introduction in stop motion. Artist, Nathan Poppe, created over 60 hand-drawn images to establish a bright and vibrant backdrop to complement Roberts' use of action figures. The original TMNT theme song was covered by Oklahoma native band, The Boom Bang, in their "garage surf punk" style. Each of these pieces can stand alone by themselves, but when infused together they create a radical tribute.

Check out the video below and let us know who your favorite character in the TMNT universe is!

Top 5 Bizarrely Hilarious Movie Monsters

$

We've been spoiled as of late with our monsters in cinema. The monsters look more realistic, the scares outweigh the laughs, and the acting... well, the acting still sucks by and large. I miss the heyday of cheesy monster movies (as I wasn't alive during it) and am awaiting the day when a big shot director decides to go old school and make another one if not as a homage to the forgotten art of terrible monsters.

This post is a homage to my 5 favorite bizarrely hilarious horrible monsters. Accompanied with clips and loads of nostalgia, it should serve as a treat to all you B-movie horror fans. Enjoy.

5. Trolls From Troll 2

I can't have a list like this and not tip a hat to one of the worst films of all time. If you haven't seen it, you need to. People telling you it's "that bad" does not do enough justice. The good news is it's more under the category of awesomely bad, as opposed to Bucky Larson bad, which I would never wish upon anyone.

It's also worth noting that seeing as this is a follow up to the original Troll, it goes down as the greatest "trolling" of all time as well.

4. The Brain

I think the best part about The Brain is its ability to make everyone stop using theirs when it comes up on victims. I mean let's be real...it can't be that hard to destroy. Just hit a part of it and it stops functioning in some way...maybe it'll die of a monster stroke. Throw some anti-psychotics in it's mouth? There's so many solutions here, and yet no one attempts them!

3. Mansquito from Mosquito Man

This guy grosses me out more than anything. Like most genetic experiments gone wrong, it's horribly disfigured and horribly misunderstood. Wait, he's just a humanoid monster with mosquito like properties? Okay I guess it's not all that complicated. He's just a giant bug man that sucks blood. Also, he's really annoying at outdoor events and could likely be stopped with an industrial can of Off!

2. The Gingerdead Man From...The Gingerdead Man.

Notice a theme in originality of movie titles? Gingerdead Man is not only scary because he's a homicidal ginger bread man who can wield a gun...he's also voiced by Gary Busey. If that doesn't give you the creeps I dunno what will. He also has the most bizarre death of any monster on the list.

1. The Watermelon Monster From Drunken Shaolin

The only monster on the list who isn't the focus of the movie, Watermelon Monster (or Ching Chong ball as he is called as well) is the most formidable foe of any monster on the list, especially if you're a guy. Using crazy tentacles and a ridiculously large mouth, he jumps and dives wrangling you around until finally he traps you and... bites off your manhood. Yup, that's for real.

Optimus Prime Narrates Inspiring NASA Ad

Even though government funding for NASA has been pulled, the space explorers are not giving up! In fact they've enlisted the help of Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen) to narrate a new video ad called We Are the Explorers. Watching it made me want to be an astronaut all over again like when I was 10. It's pretty inspiring.

Why do we explore? Simply put, it is part of who we are, and it is something we have done throughout our history. In NASA's new video, We Are the Explorers, we take a look at that tradition of reaching for things just beyond our grasp and how it is helping us lay the foundation for our greatest journeys ahead.

Watch the video below, and tell us if you'll be applying to work at NASA any time soon.

Here is a neat Futuristic Movie Timeline infographic. Dan Meth designed the graph that shows futuristic movies in chronological order. The infographic is number 6 of Meth's Pop Culture Charts

Infographic Description:

No one really pays much attention to what year sci-fi movies take place. I thought it would be interesting to arrange some classic films about the future into chronological order and see what we’d find. I’ve also charted the years in which they were released as well as the current year. This is by far the geekiest thing I’ve ever done.

* I only included movies in which Wikipedia knew the exact year.

Which film on the infographic is your favorite? I will always have a soft spot for A Clockwork Orange and 2001

Alamo Drafthouse has put together this awesome video to celebrate one of the best summers for movie lovers ever. Mad Max 2, Tron, Wrath of Khan, Poltergeist, ET, and more all came out that summer. The Drafthouse plans on replicating the release schedule.

Here is a description:

Alamo Drafthouse is recreating the "Summer of 1982" to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the greatest summer of movies... ever! From May through July, the theater will replicate 1982's earth-shaking release schedule, screening eight of the biggest genre classics on the same weekends they were released exactly 30 years ago. Alamo Drafthouse is excited to partner with Ain't It Cool News, Badass Digest, Collider, Film School Rejects, First Showing, HitFix, Movies & Slashfilm to celebrate this very special (and relentlessly fun) chapter in movie history.

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN Animated Series First Look

Marvel has released the first film clip for their animated series Ultimate Spider-Man over at Entertainment Weekly. The series looks like it will be pretty cool. There's some fun cheesy humor that you'll see in this clip featuring Nick Fury talking to Spider-Man about going through some S.H.I.E.L.D. training.

The series is set to be released on April 1st, 2012 on Disney XD. The series’ creative team includes a few names you might be familiar with such as Brian Michael Bendis, Joe Casey, Joe Kelly, and co-creator Paul Dini. (Batman: The Animated Series) Spider-Man will be voiced by Drake Bell (Drake & Josh).

As we previously reported, The stories sound like they will be cool, and there are a ton of characters that will be loaded into it such as Nick Fury played by Chi McBride, who will be Spider-Man's mentor, Agent Coulson, who will be played by Clark Gregg from the Marvel films and will be the high school principle, JK Simmons will play JJ Jameson as he has in the films, Stephen Webber will play Norman Osborn, "a powerful industrial who a grudge with Spider-Man," and Stan Lee will be the high school janitor in the series.

The show will have a very fun and playful tone to it that I think a lot of people are going to like. They play a lot with the style and the characters. For example Peter Parker will be talking to the audience and cracking jokes. At Comic-Con last year, Loeb said, "Our hope is that it looks different from any Spider-Man show you've seen before.”
