Disney's Saving Mr. Banks is hands down one of the best movies that you'll see this year. You can read my review for it here. We have a new featurette for film that focuses on recreating a 1961 Disneyland.

In addition to Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson, the stars of the soon-to-be released "Saving Mr. Banks," there's a supporting role that shares the spotlight — Disneyland park.

Trailer for FREEZER, Which Is about a Guy Locked in a Freezer

This is the trailer for a new thriller called Freezer, which is about a guy played by Dylan McDermott who is... well, locked in a freezer by the Russian mob. The movie looks absolutely ridiculous in the worst ways. This is one of those films that just makes me ask... why?

A New York City mechanic who is knocked unconscious at his birthday dinner and wakes up to find himself locked inside the restaurant's walk-in freezer. But why he's there - and how he'll survive - will reveal a chilling nightmare of mistaken identity, the Russian mob, a missing $8 million, and a wounded cop (Peter Facinelli) who may hold the key it all. The temperature is dropping. The fear is growing. And for a man caught between frozen death and vicious thugs, what happens next may lead to the most cold-blooded twist of all.

The movie comes out on January 17th, 2014.

Teaser Trailer for Christopher Nolan's INTERSTELLAR

"Our destiny lies above us."

Paramount Pictures has released an official teaser trailer for Christopher Nolan's new sci-fi film project, Interstellar. This is as teaser-ish as a trailer can get. I can't wait to see more of what Nolan is planning for this. There's not a lot of footage included from the film, but it sets up the story.

The story "chronicles the adventures of a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage."

This movie stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, John Lithgow, and Michael Caine. It comes out on November 7th, 2014.

UK Trailer for MR. PEABODY & SHERMAN

DreamWorks Animation has released a UK trailer for their upcoming feature film Mr. Peabody & Sherman. The trailer features a good amount of fun new footage from the film. There's no doubt that the kids are going to enjoy this, and maybe the parents who are familiar with the characters from the 1960s animated series... maybe more like grandparents.

The story follows Mr. Peabody, the world's smartest person, who happens to be a dog. He ends up adopting a human boy, and together they go on time traveling adventures.

The characters in the film are voiced by Ty Burrell, Allison Janney, Stephen Colbert, Leslie Mann, Stanley Tucci, Patrick Warburton, Lake Bell, and Dennis Haysbert.

Mr. Peabody, the most accomplished dog in the world, and his mischievous boy Sherman, use their time machine—the Wabac—to go on the most outrageous adventures known to man or dog. But when Sherman takes the Wabac out for a joyride to impress his friend Penny, they accidently rip a hole in the universe, wreaking havoc on the most important events in world history. Before they forever alter the past, present and future, Mr. Peabody must come to their rescue, ultimately facing the most daunting challenge of any era: figuring out how to be a parent. Together, the time-traveling trio will make their mark on history.

The 3D film is set to be released March 7th, 2014.

SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR Teaser Poster

Here's the first teaser poster for Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller's Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. I'm really hoping that the sequel captures the awesomeness of the original movie.

The movie combines two of Frank Miller's classic stories with new tales "in which the town's most hard boiled citizens cross paths with some of its more repulsive inhabitants."

The story follows Dwight as he is "hunted down by the only woman he ever loved, Ava Lord, and then watches his life go straight to hell. Chronologically, this story takes place prior to "The Big Fat Kill" (featured in the film Frank Miller's Sin City) and explains how Dwight came to have a dramatically different face."

It has an amazing cast that includes Josh Brolin, Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Bruce Willis, Rosario Dawson, Jaime King, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Eva Green, Dennis Haysbert, Christopher Meloni, Jeremy Piven, Jamie Chung, Ray Liotta, Juno Temple, Julia Garner and Stacy Keach

The movie hits theaters August 22nd, 2014.

We've got a fantastic coming-of-age short film for you to check out today called Life Doesn't Frighten Me. The film is beautifully made, and it has a great tone to it. It's also a very honest and heartwarming story.

On the eve of her thirteenth birthday, Esther Weary must come to terms with the realities of becoming a woman through her clueless Grandfather and his pet pug. Life Doesn't Frighten Me is a coming-of-age comedy about a young woman's exploration of ugliness and beauty.

I  hope you take the time to watch this.

This Alien art by Armand Dimitri is super classy. The black and white contrasts suit the picture well and make me wonder how the film would look in black and white! Check out his artwork, including his somewhat controversial Justin Tetsuo Bieber.

Check out this set of fantastically cool Lord of the Rings and Hobbit art created by artist Otis Frampton. I'm a big fan of this artist's style, it's just really fun. Over the last couple of weeks he's been creating these pieces to celebrate the release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. He created them as Facebook cover and header images, so if you want to use them on your own page, you can. All the artist asks is that you source him.

Trailer For WHITE BIRD IN A BLIZZARD with Shailene Woodley

trailer-for-white-bird-in-a-blizzard-with-shailene-woodley.jpg

With the Sundance Film Festival right around the corner we are going to start seeing some stuff for independent films. Most of the time all we have are a synopsis and a couple of photos to go off, but in the case of White Bird In A Blizzard, we actually have a trailer. We'll be posting more and more stuff from Sundance over the next couple of weeks, as we will be there to cover the events and films.

This film is based on the novel by Laura Kasischke, and it tells the story of a young woman (Shailene Woodley) whose life is turned upside-down when her beautiful, enigmatic mother (Eva Green) suddenly goes missing. It looks like a very surreal mystery drama.

The movie also stars Shiloh Fernandez, Christopher Meloni, Gabourey Sidibe, Thomas Jane, and Angela Basset. The film premieres on January 20th at Sundance Film Festival 2014.

Mark Millar's STARLIGHT to be Adapted by Fox

mark-millars-starlight-to-be-adapted-by-fox.jpg

Thanks to our friends at Latino Review, we've learned that Mark Millar's upcoming new comic book Starlight will be adapted for the big screen by 20th Century Fox. The first issue of Starlight will hit stands in March. It's been described as Flash Gordon meets The Dark Knight, and here's the official description:

So much for retirement! Meet Duke McQueen, a man who has long since settled down and left his days of saving the Universe and operating as the space hero everyone depended on—at least that’s what he thought. His wife long passed and his kids off embarking on their own adventures, Duke lives a quiet, solitary life until he receives an unexpected call from a distant world, calling him to action one last time.

This sounds like it should make for a really cool film franchise. I love the retroness of it, it, and if done right it could do very well.

THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG - Review

the-hobbit-the-desolation-of-smaug-review.jpg

People still don't seem to understand that The Hobbit is not The Lord of the Rings. Even after the first movie people still come out of the theaters saying how it's nothing like The Lord of the Rings. Of course its not! They are two very different stories, and one is much more tame and kid friendly than the other. It doesn't mean the story is not as good though, because it is! The Hobbit is one of my favorite books of all time, it was the first fantasy novel I ever read, and seeing it brought to life on the big screen has been amazing. I loved the first Hobbit film that Peter Jackson made, and I loved The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug even more! Jackson is, of course, adding stuff to the story to help it flow better, and also connect with The Lord of the Rings storyline. He's doing a hell of a great job with it too. I am happy with the additions that he's made to the story. It all seems to flow perfectly.

I'm enjoying everything that Jackson is doing with these movies, and I don't think anyone else could do them better. He has such an amazing imagination, and he has the talent to actually bring everything that he imagines to life! I am entranced by his vision of Middle Earth, and it's sad that the journey is coming to an end soon. I'm just happy that we get to see at least one more movie!

The Desolation of Smaug was an awesome film. Yeah, it was long, but as a fan of these films I don't care. I'm one of those guys that wants as much as I can get from this franchise, which is why I'll end up buying the extended edition of it as well. There were some really cool and exciting action sequences in this film. I have to say that my favorite was an escape scene from Mirkwood in barrels -- I won't go into details, but if you've seen the film already you know what I'm talking about. It was just so damn entertaining. There were lots of fun scenes in the movie! I also like seeing Legolas back, and the new elf Tauriel. It will be interesting to see where they take the relationship of these two elves. As for the dragon Smaug… he was absolutely perfect! Easily one of the best movie dragons ever, and he stole the show! He looked so much more awesome than I imagined him in the book. I will say that the end of the movie really left you hanging, but it's kind of the perfect place to end this film.

I saw the movie in the 48fps high frame rate again, and I'm still really not a fan of it. I don't think I will bother watching the third movie in it. It just looked too clean and crisp, and I never found myself fully immersed in that world. The same thing happened with An Unexpected Journey. The high frame rate just doesn't seem to fit the fantasy realm. It all just looked too fake for me. There needs to be a grittiness to this story, and the HFR seems to take that away. Everything looks like a movie set. I can see it working with a slick looking sci-fi film, but it just doesn't work with Middle Earth. It basically just distracts me the whole time, and I don't like being distracted when watching movies.

These films are an incredible movie going experience, and I loved this sequel. I'm so excited for the grand finale next year! You've got to watch this if you haven't already. If you have seen The Desolation of Smaug, let us know what you thought of the film.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 and TRANSFORMERS 4 to get Super Bowl Spots

amazing-spider-man-2-and-transformers-4-to-get-super-bowl-spots.jpg

For those of you excited to see more awesomeness from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, then you'll be happy to hear that Sony Pictures will be showing off more footage in a Super Bowl TV spot.

The news comes from Deadline, who also says that Transformers: Age of Extinction will also get a spot during the big game. Apparently Disney has also bought a spot, but they haven't decided what to promote in it. I imagine it will be for a Marvel film though. The report also mentions that Lionsgate bought an unspecified spot during the pre-game show instead of the game itself.

The Super Bowl XLVIII event will take place on February 2nd. The Superbowl is always a good place to see lots of good movie trailers and commercials. It's always my favorite part about watching the football game. In case you were wondering, it costs $4 million dollars for a 30 second slot during the game.

Disney Announces MOANA Animated Feature Film

In the wake of the success of Frozen, Disney has announced a new animated film they are developing, called Moana (Mo-AH-na), which is slated for release in 2018.

The movie will be directed by John Musker and Ron Clement, who have worked on films such as Aladdin and The Princess and the Frog. The story is described as a "mythic adventure set around 2000 years ago and across a series of islands in the South Pacific."

The movie will be a step away from the fairytale storyline that we are used to seeing from Disney, and here's a description,

monanayy44disney.jpg

"The main character will be Moana Waialiki, a sea voyaging enthusiast, and the only daughter of a chief in a long line of navigators. When her family needs her help, she sets off on an epic journey. The film will also include demi-gods and spirits taken from real mythology"

Bleeding Cool previously described the film as...

"Being developed in a new style of CG that’s somewhat like but certainly not identical to the techniques used on Paperman. The exact look of their film is very much still in development at the moment."

I can't wait to see how this movie comes together. I loved the "Paperman" animation, and it would be cool to see a full movie done in that style. It seems like this story could fit that style perfectly. There's a lot they could do with it to give it that South Pacific feel.

Short Film Shows Us San Francisco Being Patrolled by Drones

short-film-shows-us-san-francisco-being-patrolled-by-drones.jpg

We've got a cool short film for you to watch today, called "Our Drone Future." It was created by Alex Cornell and shows us what it could be like for a city like San Francisco to be patrolled by drones. The drone interacts with a human officer monitor, but operates on its own.

Created with DJI Phantom Drones, After Effects, Premier, Logic, GoPro, and a liberal interpretation of FAA regulations:

Our Drone Future explores the technology, capability, and purpose of drones, as their presence becomes an increasingly pervasive reality in the skies of tomorrow.

In the near future, cities use semi-autonomous drones for urban security. Human officers monitor drone feeds remotely, and data reports are displayed with a detailed HUD and communicated via a simulated human voice (designed to mitigate discomfort with sentient drone technology). While the drones operate independently, they are "guided" by the human monitors, who can suggest alternate mission plans and ask questions.

Specializing in predictive analysis, the security drones can retask themselves to investigate potential threats. As shown in this video, an urban security drone surveys San Francisco's landmarks and encounters fierce civilian resistance.

This gives us an interesting glimpse of what we could actually end up seeing in the near future. Thanks to io9!

Showtime's PENNY DREADFUL Video Blog - What Is a Penny Dreadful?

showtimes-penny-dreadful-video-blog-what-is-a-penny-dreadful.jpg

Showtime has released a production video blog for their new horror series Penny Dreadful. It's been described as a "psycho-sexual horror" series that features some of literature's most terrifying characters. The video gives us a behind the scenes look at the series currently in production and gives us some insight on the inspiration behind the new series.

In PENNY DREADFUL, some of literature’s most famously terrifying characters – including Dr. Frankenstein and his creature, Dorian Gray and iconic figures from the novel Dracula – become embroiled in Victorian London.  The series weaves together these classic horror origin stories as the characters grapple with their monstrous alienation.

The series stars Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, Eva Green, Reeve Carney, Rory Kinnear, Billie Piper, and Harry TreadawaySkyfall writer John Logan has written all eight episodes of the series with Sam Mendes, who is also executive producing. The first two episodes are being helmed by director Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage).

Ridley Scott to Remake MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS

Ridley Scott is set to produce a remake of the 1974 Oscar nominated film Murder of the Orient Express. He will produce the film alongside Simon Kinberg and Mark Gordon for 20th Century Fox. The movie is based on the Agatha Christie’s 1934 novel, which featured detective Hercule Poirot as he investigates the murder of a passenger on an outbound train from Istanbul.

The original film starred Albert Finney as detective Poirot, and Ingrid Bergman, who won an Oscar for best supporting actress.

The Orient Express isn't in operation anymore, but I assume this will end up being a period movie set in the 1930s. Scott is currently working on his Moses film, Exodus, and depending on when the studio wants to make this new film, he could also possibly end up directing it.

The Orient Express is a great detective story, one that I think would make for a good new adaptation.

James Cameron to Shoot AVATAR Sequels in New Zealand

Via: Stuff

Via: Stuff

Earlier this year director James Cameron moved to New Zealand to start working on his next three Avatar sequels. He already set up production offices there and in Los Angeles. I just assumed he was going to film the movies there, but apparently it's official now.

Prime Minister John Key made the announcement yesterday, saying that the films would be made in their country and that the studio will spend at least NZ$500 million during their production. It will also lead to thousands of people being employed.

If the three films fulfill certain requirements, they will qualify for a total tax rebate of 25%. Those requirements include,

  • Spending at least NZ$500 million in New Zealand, including most of the live action shooting and visual effects.
  • New Zealand hosting at least one official red carpet premiere and a featurette on New Zealand being included in DVDs and Blu Rays.
  • An offer by Cameron to serve as a founding member of a new screen advisory board, which will provide advice and guidance to New Zealand screen and film makers looking to succeed internationally.
  • Marketing and promotion of New Zealand and its film industry.

Cameron expects that these three films will be released in December of 2016, 2017, and 2018. As much as I enjoyed the first movie, I hope that these sequels end up being even better.
