VENOM and SINISTER SIX Films Announced

venom-and-sinister-six-films-announced.jpg

As most of you already know, Sony Pictures is planning to expand the Amazing Spider-Man cinematic universe and produce spin-off films with some of those characters. They said that they want "to forge a new legacy in the story of Peter Parker on screen." We now know the details of what the studio plans on doing which characters are going to be given their own movies. They include Venom and the Sinister Six

They even already have writers and a director being lined up for the movies! Alex Kurtzman (Spider-Man and Star Trek writer) is set to co-write and direct Venom, and Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods) will write and possibly direct Sinister Six! I've got to say, this is all really exciting!

Of course, the director of the Amazing Spider-Man films, Marc Webb, will also be involved with the development of these movies. I'm a huge fan of the Spider-Man franchise, and I'm looking forward to seeing what the studio ends up doing with these characters. I'm sure we will see even more films get made down the line with different characters, but Venom and Sinister Six are a great start!

Here is the press release with even more details!

Sony Pictures Entertainment announced today that they will, in association with Marvel Entertainment, develop several new projects in the Spider-Man franchise, with Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner, Ed Solomon, and Drew Goddard to collaborate on overseeing the developing story over several films that will be produced by Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach.

The five writers, along with the two producers and Marc Webb, have formed a franchise brain trust to expand the universe for the brand and to develop a continuous tone and thread throughout the films. Under the deals, the studio announced that Kurtzman & Orci & Pinkner are writing the screenplay forThe Amazing Spider-Man 3, which the studio hopes Webb will return to direct. That film will go into production next fall for release on June 10, 2016. In addition, the team will build on the cinematic foundation laid by Webb, Arad, and Tolmach in the first two movies. They will expand the franchise with Kurtzman & Orci & Solomon writing the screenplay for Venom, which Kurtzman will direct. Goddard, then, will write with an eye to direct, The Sinister Six, focusing on the villains in the franchise. Hannah Minghella and Rachel O’Connor will oversee the development and production of these films for the studio.

Commenting on the announcement, Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures said, “The Spider-Man film franchise is one of our studio’s greatest assets. We are thrilled with the creative team we have assembled to delve more deeply into the world that Marc, Avi and Matt have begun to explore in 'The Amazing Spider-Man' and 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2'. We believe that Marc, Alex, and Drew have uniquely exciting visions for how to expand the Spider-Man universe in each of these upcoming films.”

Arad and Tolmach added, “This collaboration was born out of the great experience we and Marc had working with Alex, Bob, and Jeff on 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2'. With more than fifty years’ wealth of stories in the comic books to draw upon for inspiration, the Spider-Man universe is truly boundless; in addition, the Spider-Man comics have the greatest rogues gallery of any series, and to have the chance to explore that on film is truly thrilling. Until now, we have approached each film as a separate, self-contained entity, but with this move, we have the opportunity to grow the franchise by looking to the future as we develop a continuous arc for the story. That is what Alex, Bob, Jeff, Ed, and Drew will do in this unprecedented collaboration, and we’re excited about the directions they are taking the character and the world.”

EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Featurette - How Walkers Walk

empire-strikes-back-featurette-how-walkers-walk.jpg

We've got another fantastic behind the scenes featurette for Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. It focuses on the stop motion animation used to create the Walkers walk in the film. It includes special effect artist Dennis Muren explaining the process of bringing the Walker to life as well. There's a lot of interesting stuff revealed here that I didn't know before and that fans are sure to find interesting.

Dennis Muren looks back on how Industrial Light & Magic animated the AT-AT walkers from The Empire Strikes Back's Battle of Hoth sequence -- and the inspiration for the techniques used.

Originally, Muren and his team were unsure of how they would bring the AT-ATs to life. The first idea was to build an actual robot that could move by itself, but that was deemed too complicated and costly. Instead, Muren pushed for stop-motion, citing the influence of King Kong and the realization that the staccato look of stop-motion would be appropriate for machines. Models were manipulated a frame at a time, animated in front of painted backgrounds instead of blue screen, with baking soda was used in place of snow.

It was shot at 24 frames per second, resulting in about 5 seconds of footage per day of work. For explosions, high speed photography was used, and cutouts were used for background walkers.

One of the early ideas was to build an actual robot version that would walk on its own, but that would prove too costly and complicated. Muren, whose background was in stop-motion animation, pushed to have the sequence done using that technique -- since the AT-ATs were machines anyway, the staccato look of stop-motion would be appropriate. So stop-motion models were built and manipulated in front of paintings, as opposed to blue screen, and baking soda was used for the snowy landscape. The set itself had trap doors so that animators could pop up, animate the model, go back down, and shoot a frame of film. Photo cutouts were used for walkers in the background, and smaller models were created to convey a sense of scale and depth in the shots.

Jon Favreau's classic Christmas movie Elf is the latest film to get an 8-bit makeover from the gang over at CineFix. Christmas is coming, and so is the film's 10-year anniversary. I can't believe that it's been 10 years! Damn, time flies by way too fast. I remember watching the movie in the theaters, and I've watched it every year since. Love that film!

Ed Helms to Star in NAKED GUN Reboot

“It’s true what they say: Cops and women don’t mix. It’s like eating a spoonful of Drano; sure, it’ll clean you out, but it’ll leave you hollow inside.” - The Naked Gun

It looks like Paramount Pictures is developing a reboot of their hilarious '80s and '90s comedy franchise, The Naked Gun. It's been forever since I've seen any of those movies, but I remember laughing my ass off when I watched them. The original films were based on the 1982 ABC spoof series Police Squad!, which was cancelled after six episodes.

The studio has cast Ed Helms (The Hangover) in the lead role of Detective Frank Drebin, who was previously played by Leslie Nielsen. I guess if anyone could try to explicate that style of comedy, it would be Helms.

The studio has also hired Thomas Lennon and R. Ben Garant to write the script for the film. They are best known for writing the Night at the Museum and Reno 911 franchises. They also wrote and directed the hilarious comedy Hell Baby. They have been given the task of giving a new spin on the Drebin character.

These guys seem like they have the right comedy style to make this reboot work successfully. I think this franchise is in good hands with this creative team, and they could actually give us something extremely funny.

In case you've been wondering what's been going on over at Disney and Lucasfilm regarding Star Wars: Episode VII and Indiana Jones, we have a few updates for you.

The Chairman of Disney, Alan Horn, was speaking at a Variety event recently where he revealed that a script has yet to be turned in for Star Wars: Episode VII, but that he expects to see it in January. The studio can't get a budget put together without the script, but they expect it to be around $200 million.

I think it's funny that they don't have a budget yet, but they are already building the sets for the film, which includes a completed full scale Millennium Falcon, inside and out. Horn also talked about the Indiana Jones franchise and where that property currently stands now that they own it.

Here are the Twitter updates from Variety reporter @marcgraser:

It will be awesome when the studio finally gets around to making official announcements on these projects. I wonder if they will bring Steven Spielberg back to direct the fifth Indiana Jones movie. As much as I didn't like the fourth film, I'm excited to see what Disney ends up doing with it.

Video stores are virtually dead, and with Blockbuster going away and little independent video stores closing down all over the country, it's not hard to imagine that one day there will be none left. I spent a lot of my childhood in these kinds of video stores, and it's weird to think that my kids won't have those same experiences.

We have a short documentary for you to check out today that was produced by /Film's David Chen called Inside Scarecrow Video. It focuses on the largest independent video store in the world. The store holds 117,000 video titles, and is "revered and admired, counting filmmakers like Bernardo Bertolucci and Quentin Tarantino as previous visitors." Here's are some technical details on the doc for those of you who are interested.

A revealing look inside Scarecrow Video, the largest independent video store in the world. Filmed using a Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera and a Black Magic Cinema Camera, along with a Polaroid camcorder handheld rig and a Manfrotto 561 Video Monopod. Audio captured using a Sennheiser wireless microphone plugged into a Zoom H4n.

It will be interesting to see how long this video store can hold out.

As a big fan of World War II movies, I'm incredibly excited for David Ayer's new film Fury. This think looks and sounds like it's going to be awesome! The film is currently in production, and the director has posted a ton of mages from the movie on his Twitter feed. They feature the cast of the film and a lot of cool looks shots of tanks!

The film stars Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Michael Pena, Jon Bernthal, and Jason Isaacs.

The story is set at the very end of World War II, in April 1945. "As the Allies make their final push in the European Theater, a battle-hardened army sergeant named Wardaddy (Pitt) commands a Sherman tank and her five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Outnumbered and outgunned, Wardaddy and his men face overwhelming odds in their heroic attempts to strike at the heart of Nazi Germany."

I know Sailor Moon is a big thing, it has a huge fanbase, and I imagine many within that fanbase would be happy to learn that there is now an official line of costume bra and panty sets dedicated the popular anime.

Lingerie retailer Peach John teamed up with Neoko Takeuchi to bring you this collection. The line features some matching bra and panty sets, pajamas, panties, and a costume lingerie set, which is available in five different colors.

The are set to be released in late February 2014. So unfortunately you won't be able to get them as Christmas gifts this year. But here they are in all their glory!

The trailer for the second season of House of Cards was released today, and it's enough to make me want to watch the first season all over again. The tension, drama, excitement in the trailer alone have me wanting to cancel Valentine's Day and just spend the night power watching the new season! For those who haven't bothered with the series yet, this is hands down the best drama on television. Watch the trailer and relive why you love this show.

Watch Paul Rudd Prank Conan Over the Course of 15 Years

For the past 15 years Paul Rudd has pranked Conan O'Brien on his late night shows whenever he's been on. Rudd intros a clip from whichever movie he's promoting, but actually shows a scene from the (terrible) movie Mac and Me. He tricks Conan into believing that he will show the right clip every time. I've heard of this before but have never seen the full clips of each one! In Rudd's defense, the scene is hilarious enough to watch over and over again.

Trailer for Simon Pegg's A FANTASTIC FEAR OF EVERYTHING

We've got a fantastic new trailer for Simon Pegg's fun looking paranoid comedy A Fantastic Fear of Everything. The film was written and directed by Crispian Mills, and it looks like a great film. Pegg looks like he does an amazing job in the movie, and I can't wait to see it!

Pegg plays a character named Jack in the story who "is a children's author turned crime novelist whose detailed research into the lives of Victorian serial killers has turned him into a paranoid wreck, persecuted by an irrational fear of being murdered. When Jack is thrown a lifeline by his long-suffering agent, and a mysterious Hollywood executive takes a sudden and inexplicable interest in Jack's script, what should be his 'big break' rapidly turns into his "big breakdown" as Jack is forced to confront his worst fears; among them love, laundromats and serial killers."

The movie come out in theaters on February 7th 2014, but if you don't want to wait that long it also comes on iTunes on January 7th.

Emilia Clarke Officially Cast in TERMINATOR Reboot

Via: Deadline

We've got a quick update on Alan Taylor's Terminator reboot casting! Last week it was reported that Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke was in the running to play Sarah Connor in the movie. Today that casting is now official. It's not really that surprising as Taylor and Clarke worked together on HBO's Game of Thrones, and Clarke seemed to fit the role.

Clarke is going to be great in the role. She's a beautiful, strong woman who has proven she can kick some ass. She will possibly be joined by Jason Clarke, who is currently in negotiations to play her son John Connor. Of course there's going to be time travel involved, so don't worry about the whole age difference.

This is looking less and less likely of being a sequel to the other Terminator films. Everyone seems to be calling it a reboot, instead of Terminator 5. But who knows what they are planning for the story yet. I'm sure we'll find out what the deal is soon enough.

Another Bad Trailer for THE LEGEND OF HERCULES

another-bad-trailer-for-the-legend-of-hercules.jpg

Summit Entertainment is really pushing the hell out of this movie, The Legend of Hercules. This is the third trailer they've released for it in two months. I'm sorry studio people, but changing the title and releasing more trailers doesn't make the movie look any better. This thing is going to bomb terribly.

The movie was previously called Hercules: The Legend Begins. It stars Twilight's Kellan Lutz, who barely even says a word in this trailer. The movie looks like it belongs on the SyFy Channel, or maybe even The CW. All I know is I'm not interested. I'm not really interested in the Brett Ratner and Dwayne Johnson Hercules movie either, though. It just seems like they got the wrong people to make these films.

In Ancient Greece 1200 B.C., a queen succumbs to the lust of Zeus to bear a son promised to overthrow the tyrannical rule of the king and restore peace to a land in hardship. But this prince, Hercules, knows nothing of his real identity or his destiny. He desires only one thing: the love of Hebe, Princess of Crete, who has been promised to his own brother. When Hercules learns of his greater purpose, he must choose: to flee with his true love or to fulfill his destiny and become the true hero of his time. The story behind one of the greatest myths is revealed in this action-packed epic - a tale of love, sacrifice and the strength of the human spirit.

It hits theaters on January 10th, 2014!
