2014 GOLDEN GLOBE Nominations for Film and TV

2014-golden-globe-nominations-for-film-and-tv.jpg

The nominations are out for the 2014 Golden Globe Awards!  I'm not surprised by what was nominated. I will say however, having just seen Saving Mr. Banks, I'm a little disappointed it didn't get more nominations. It was just such a phenomenal film. I'm happy that that Emma Thompson got nominated for Best Actress, but the movie deserved a Best Picture nomination, and if I had to swap out one of the movies it would be Captain Phillips, which Tom Hanks was also nominated for. Then, as much as I enjoyed the film Rush, I'm not sure it is Best Picture material either. It will be interesting to see who wins, but I'd put my money on Gravity or 12 Years a Slave. As for the TV aspect of the awards, Showtime's Homeland got completely snubbed!

Check out the full list of nominations below! Who do you want to see win?

DOCTOR WHO and SHERLOCK Collide in This Fan-Made Crossover

John Smith created a short film crossover that I'm sure many of us would like to see in real life! Sherlock and Doctor Who doing a crossover episode would be incredible to say the least, but given the rate of episodes in Sherlock's series, highly unlikely. The most impressive part of this fan made film is the level of work that went into it! This feels like it was actually filmed with Matt Smith and Benedict Cumberbatch side by side, but it's just footage from both shows!

Here's a teaser trailer for a great-looking sci-fi adventure film that just popped out of nowhere! The movie is called Earth to Echo, and I have no idea how it flew under everyone's radar, but here it is, and it looks like a movie I'd really want to see! It's really rare to keep something like this hidden until the first trailer is released, so I applaud the creative team for being able to do it! The movie looks like it has that same '80s style magical feel to it like The Goonies, E.T., Explorers, and even J.J. AbramsSuper 8. Here's the synopsis,

After a construction project begins digging in their neighborhood, best friends Tuck, Munch and Alex inexplicably begin to receive strange, encoded messages on their cell phones. Convinced something bigger is going on, they go to their parents and the authorities. When everyone around them refuses to take the messages seriously, the three embark on a secret adventure to crack the code and follow it to its source. But taking matters into their own hands gets the trio in way over their heads when they discover a mysterious being from another world who desperately needs their help. The epic, suspenseful and exciting journey that follows will change all of their lives forever.

Earth to Echo was directed by Dave Green, and stars Teo Halm, Brian “Astro” Bradley, Reese Hartwig, and Ella Linnea Wahlestedt. It's set to open up on April 25th, 2014, and I'm very excited to see it!

We've got another fun CG animated short for your viewing pleasure. This one is a western comedy called Reaping for Dummies. It features death going to reap the soul of an old time cowboy from a deserted ghost town. The cowboy doesn't plan on going so easy though, and ends up putting the reaper through a crazy challenge of booby traps that have been set up all over town.

This was a graduation-project made by a group of five students from the 3D design and animation course at Idèfagskolen in Tønsberg, Norway. It turned out to be pretty entertaining!

First Official Look at Johnny Depp in TRANSCENDENCE

Transcendence-depp12132014.jpg

Thanks to Entertainment Weekly we have our first official look at Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, Morgan Freeman, and Cillian Murphy in Wally Pfister's sci-fi thriller Transcendence. Here's the synopsis for the film, which was released recently,

Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can…but if they should. Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.

The director went on to talk about the film and Depp, saying,

“It’s a very timely subject as we find we have to update the software on our cell phones before we can even make a call. I don’t think we’ve seen him this way in a long time." he said laughing, "Just a pair of glasses on and a pretty normal haircut.”

Transcendence comes out on April 18th, 2014. This is going to be a very interesting movie, and it has the potential to be a great film.

Universal Pictures has released a cool animated prequel to Keanu Reeve's upcoming fantasy martial arts film, 47 Ronin. It's called "The Way of the Warrior," and it tells the story of how "the ronin came to be masterless, and fought dragons and other incredible beasts along the way. "

47 Ronin will be released on Christmas Day, and I think it's going to end up being a pretty entertaining film! We have CraveOnline to thank for the video!

It was created YouTuber PistolShrimps, who does a great job seamlessly cutting in scenes from The Hobbit. It thought it turned out really funny. Hope you like it!

Simon Pegg Joins Monty Python's Sci-Fi Comedy ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING

Simon Pegg is set to star in a sci-fi comedy adventure called Absolutely Anything, which comes from Monty Python founding member Terry Jones. Pegg will join John CleeseTerry GilliamMichael Palin, and Robin Williams, who will be providing voices for characters in the film.

The story follows a disillusioned schoolteacher who suddenly finds he has magical powers, bestowed upon him by some aliens. Those aliens will be voiced by the Monty Python alums, while Williams will provide the voice of the abductee's funny and faithful dog. I believe Pegg will play the schoolteacher. The actor had this to say in a statement,

"As someone whose love of comedy was hugely informed by Monty Python, the chance to work with Terry [Jones] was a gift. Meeting your heroes is one thing, working with them is something else."

I grew up watching Monty Python, and it's going to be amazing watching them bring their comedic magic back to the big screen. Then to include Pegg in the project is just going to make that film so much more fun and entertaining. I'm excited about this!

Here's a new full trailer for Community season 5, and I have to say, I'm 100% on board with its return. It looks like creator Dan Harmon has brilliantly been able to resurrect the show from the depths of hell, and turn it back into something great! Season 4 of the series was so terrible that I couldn't even watch it all. I really had no interest in watching the show after they that season 4 mess, but hot damn! The fifth season looks absolutely hilarious! I especially love how Donald Glover jokes about his own imminent departure from the show. I'm very excited about the return of Community, and the whole “six seasons and a movie” goal looks like it could actually become a reality! Enjoy the trailer!

According to USA Today, Don Cheadle is set to reprise his role as James "Rhodey" Rhodes, a.k.a. War Machine, in Joss Whedon's Avengers: Age of Ultron. In an interview with the actor, the site simply states that he'll have "a part to film in the next Avengers movie."

This is the first time I've heard anything about Rhodey being in the film, but It makes sense to me that he would be! He was eventually going to end up in one of the Avengers films, it might as well be Age of Ultron! The question is... will he suit up as War Machine or Iron Patriot?

Stephen King has recently found success with TV series such as Haven and Under the Dome. He's got another new series going into development at ABC called Grand Central. The show will be based on a short story called "The New York Times At Special Bargain Rates," which was published in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction in 2008.

The series is coming from Haven writers Sam Ernst and Jim Dunn, and according to the report, it is "a potential summer straight-to-series order." It's also described as "a character-driven procedural with a supernatural twist."

The story centers on a woman who gets a phone call from her husband who died in a plane crash two days prior. He warns her of an impending tragedy and saves her life.

Grand Central will premiere in the U.S. in the summer of 2014.

Motion Comic Prologue for I, FRANKENSTEIN

In anticipation of Aaron Eckhart's I, Frankenstein, Lionsgate has released a motion comic prologue. It's called I, Frankenstein: Genesis. Yes, they used the same "Genesis" subtitle that the new Terminator movie is using... ugh. The comic focuses on Eckhart's character Adam and to watch it you have to click here. This is the first of three installments. The next two will focus on the characters played by Miranda Otto and Bill Nighy's characters.

The movie looks kind of ridiculous, but at the same time it looks like it will be a fun movie to watch. I enjoyed the Underworld movies, so I definitely plan on checking this one out. It will be interesting to see the audience's reaction to a film like this. I don't think it's going to do very well at the box office though. The movie hits theaters on January 24th.

With Disney's Saving Mr. Banks being released in theaters today, I thought it would be good to post this nice little video essay on why Mary Poppins is the best movie of all time. Of course, not everyone will agree with that statement, but it won't hurt you to watch the video to find out why Nick Tierce thinks the movie is just that. He makes some very good and valid points.

There's no doubt that Mary Poppins is a great film, because it really is, it's one of my favorites. But, do you think it is the best movie of all time? Thanks to /Film for the heads up on the video!

Make sure to check out Saving Mr. Banks this weekend! You won't be disappointed.

Colorful Trailer for RIO 2

I never saw the first Rio movie. I don't know how I got out of it, but somehow my kids saw it without me. They loved the movie, they are excited to see the sequel. Me? I'm sure I'll find a way to get out of having to take them to see it. It just doesn't look good to me at all.

Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg, will.i.am, Jemaine Clement, Tracy Morgan, George Lopez, Leslie Mann, Rodrigo Santoro, and Jamie Foxx are all back to reprise their roles. They will be joined by new cast members Andy Garcia, Rita Moreno, Bruno Mars, and Kristin Chenoweth.

Rich with grandeur, character, color and music, RIO 2 finds Jewel (Hathaway), Blu (Eisenberg) and their three kids leaving their domesticated life in that magical city for a journey to the Amazon. They encounter a menagerie of characters who are born to be wild.

The movie will be released on April 11th, 2014.

Frank Grillo to Star in THE PURGE 2

Captain America: The Winter Solider co-star Frank Grillo is set to star in Universal Picture's The Purge 2. The movie is set to be written and directed by James DeMonaco, who also made the first film with Ethan Hawke

There are no details on the plot of the film yet, but as you might expect, it will be set in the same world where all crime is legalized for a 12-hour period. It will just explore that world even further.

I haven't seen the first film yet. I'm sure I'll eventually watch it. I just never had the desire to spend any money to check it out. It was made on a $3 million budget, and made around $90 million worldwide. That's a pretty big profit, which is why we are going to see a sequel.

If you saw the first film, what did you think of it? Would you watch a sequel?
