Amazing Short Film Set in a Computer Called NOAH

$

0

I absolutely loved this short film! At first I wasn't sure if I would like it or not, but the more I watched, the more I was pulled in. It's a very different and original concept that was executed perfectly. The movie is called Noah, it was co-directed by Walter Woodman and Patrick Cederberg, and it recently premiered at the Toronto Film Festival. Here's the synopsis:

In a story that plays out entirely on a teenager's computer screen, Noah follows its eponymous protagonist as his relationship takes a rapid turn for the worse in this fascinating study of behaviour (and romance) in the digital age.

I'm not sure I could see this as a feature length film, but it works great for a short like this. I hope you all enjoy it!

Another trailer has been released for an upcoming new drama called August: Osage County. This movie brings together an incredible cast of actors that includes Chris Cooper, Benedict Cumberbatch, Juliette Lewis, Ewan McGregor, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Abigail Breslin, Dermot Mulroney, and Margo Martindale

The movie was produced by George Clooney and directed by John Wells. It is based on the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play by Tracy Letts.

The film "tells the dark, hilarious and deeply touching story of the strong-willed women of the Weston family, whose lives have diverged until a family crisis brings them back to the Midwest house they grew up in, and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them." Here's some more detailed information.

In Oklahoma, in August, Beverly Weston (Sam Shepard), is a poet with a drinking problem while his wife, Violet (Streep) suffers from mouth cancer and has a newly developed addiction to drugs. Beverly decides to hire a live-in cook and caregiver for Violet. A few weeks after Johnna (Misty Upham) is hired, Beverly disappears which motivates the family to come together to look for him but only to find a few days later that he has committed suicide. Violet and Beverly’s daughters, Barbara (Roberts) and Karen (Juliette Lewis), along with Ivy (Julianne Nicholson) who lives in the house, come to their father’s funeral, as does the entire family. A series of conflicts ensue over the next several days as Violet and Barbara have never understood each other. Karen’s fiance proves to be a pot smoker and tries to molest his soon to be niece, Ivy is planning to run away with her cousin after engaging in a romantic relationship. At the end Violet remains alone, only with Johnna.

The movie comes out on November 8th, 2013.

Review: LEGEND OF DUNGEON - Frustratingly Wonderful

I just got killed by a warlock. Again. Courtesy of the husband and wife team of Robot Loves Kitty. I’ve been playing a lot of their new game, Legend of Dungeon. Released on Steam today, it is a roguelike, dungeon-crawling beat-’em-up, and it’s frustratingly wonderful.

The game started back in November of 2012, when it was Kickstarted with $34,000 (650% of its goal), and the developers used to those funds to make the game while living “in a treehouse on a mountain.” It was then greenlit on Steam. They wanted to merge their loves of arcade beat-’em-ups and the classic Rogue (the progenitor of so-called “roguelike” games). The result is a unique, randomly generated dungeon crawling RPG experience.

Gameplay

Roguelikes are known in part for their frustrating difficulty and use of permadeath--in this, Legend of Dungeon is no exception. The first time I played, as I was getting acclimated to the controls, I fell off a bridge into some lava. Dead. I improved after that, but the game has a way of rudely reminding you that you’re mortal. Just when you feel like you can handle the perils of the dungeon, an ogre will show up and bash you with a club, knocking off half your health. The difficulty ramps up quickly, and you just have to hope that you level up fast enough and find enough cool items to carry you through.

The items are one of the best parts of the game for me. They’re fun and tongue-in-cheek. There are so many hats. So many hats. Almost everything in the dungeon is a hat. Find a cat? Put it on your head. It’s probably a hat. I’ve also stumbled upon a few really cool weapons, like a flaming sword or a magical book that shoots glowing skulls. Like most roguelikes, the randomness of the item drops is one of the main things that make them so fun and replayable.

In the spirit of arcade beat-’em-ups, the game also has up to four-player co-op. Since this game is being released on Ouya, this would be a great game to play on the couch with your friends, exploring the dungeon together.

Presentation

Legend of Dungeon appears at first glance to be a simple retro pixelated game. On closer inspection, though, it’s surprisingly sophisticated. The soundtrack is dynamic, reacting to monsters and battles on screen. The lighting is also surprisingly sophisticated. There are various levels of lighting throughout the dungeon, and the light and shadow moves in really cool and eerie ways. Some rooms have no lighting at all, and you’re left to your torchlight (or if you’re lucky, you might have a ball lighting hat to give you illumination).

Conclusion

Legend of Dungeon is a maddeningly fun game. If you’re fan of roguelikes (and are already acquainted with the wonderful bitterness that is dying over and over again in a randomized dungeons), then this is definitely worth playing.

Awkward Geek Confession: I Cried After an Episode of DOCTOR WHO

It was a weird time in my life. I had recently taken a new job in a new state and one week after getting the job, I was in a new place with no friends or family and a night job that kept me alone most hours. Needless to say, the Netflix and Amazon Instant on my Wii U became my best friend. I spent most nights catching up on Doctor Who. It was interesting, engaging, and a great escape from the fact that I was two hours away from any familiarity or my now-fiancee (but girlfriend at the time).

To set the scene, it's late at night and I had just gotten off my shift at the radio station, and stopped by the 24 hour Hardee's (Carl's Jr. to you westerners) and picked up a huge thickburger and fries. I had just gotten into series 7 and after the whole centurion/locked-in-a-box business with Rory and Amy, was really into the romance the two shared. I waited for the load to finish, got into the episode (Asylum of the Daleks) and....

THEY'RE DIVORCING?! My jaw dropped. I might have spilled some ketchup on my shirt even. I couldn't believe it as the episode went on. "It has to be some joke," I told myself as I continued to get angry at every writer of Doctor Who ever for letting this happen. Surely The Doctor would mend things right?  The lack of love between the two continued for a majority of the episode and bothered me so much that I actually really didn't care about the storyline.

I felt betrayed. How could a couple that had been through so much just leave it like that? The years of waiting beside the box for Rory, the years spent by alternate Amy waiting for Rory. It wasn't fair, how could they not handle a year without time travel? I continued to work it around in my head until about 3/4's of the way through the episode when the big reason is revealed. Amy left Rory because she knows he wants kids and she can't have any...

I broke down and started crying. It was Amy and Rory's fictitious romance that filled my insecurities about anything could be happening between me and my significant other. It wasn't like I was super into it, but it really drove home the small nuances that can drive a couple apart, and for a guy who just left the love of his life with a week and a half notice, that hit home hard.

So there I am, crying into a big ass cheeseburger in a dark room at Doctor Who. I eventually calmed down after seeing they got back together, and now feel silly about the whole situation. Anyway, yeah haven't cried about Doctor Who since...although the 50th hasn't happened yet. Any sci-fi show ever make you cry?

International Trailer for the Sci-Fi Thriller THE LAST DAYS ON MARS

One day man will go to Mars, but until that day we can see what a terribly awful experience it will be in the movies. An international trailer has been released for director Ruairi Robinson's sci-fi thriller The Last Days on Mars, which stars Liev Schreiber, Elias Koteas, Romola Garai, Olivia Williams, and Tom Cullen. It looks like it will be fun movie, and here's the synopsis:

On the last day of the first manned mission to Mars, a crew member of Tantalus Base believes he has made an astounding discovery – fossilized evidence of bacterial life. Unwilling to let the relief crew claim all the glory, he disobeys orders to pack up and goes out on an unauthorized expedition to collect further samples. But a routine excavation turns to disaster when the porous ground collapses, and he falls into a deep crevice and near certain death. His devastated colleagues attempt to recover his body. However, when another vanishes they start to suspect that the life-form they have discovered is not yet dead. As the group begins to fall apart it seems their only hope is the imminent arrival of the relief ship Aurora.

The film will be available On Demand on October 31st and will then hit theaters on December 6th. I'm looking forward to checking it out!

Trailer for Elijah Wood and Sasha Grey's Thriller OPEN WINDOW

The first trailer for has been released for the new thriller Open Windows. The movie was directed Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes), and stars Elijah Wood (LOTR) and Sasha Grey (The Girlfriend Experience). The film is an interesting concept that is told through various forms of technology. 12 different cameras were used to make the movie including webcams, head cameras, tablets, mobile phones, 3D mapping cameras as well as security and satellite cameras. The film style is definitely a gimmick, but it looks like Vigalondo pulled it off.

The plot centers on Wood’s character who is tracking down an actress, played by Grey, who was abducted by a vicious villain named Chord. The story unfolds on the screen of a laptop connected using the internet. The real-time feature was previously described as "90 minutes of suspense in a tense, fast-paced, high-tech thriller with action and terror, updating the key elements of 70s paranoid thrillers through today’s computer and online environment." Here's what the director had to say about it...

Just as in Brian De Palma’s Blow Out, the girl is captured. The hero will have to use every means at his disposal to discover where she is, and rescue her from the villain before its too late.

The action will be followed on the screen of a laptop connected to the Internet – an approach that has excited us all from the outset. Something like this means going beyond high concept films like Paranormal ActivityCloverfield or Chronicle. Instead of simulating a home video camera, we will be representing a computer desktop. The movie screen becomes a computer screen, and the spectator becomes the protagonist of this adventure.

Open Windows is full of twists, but it’s essentially a 90-minute chase, a continuous climax with unrelenting tension… it is also a powerful viral tool, with a wide potential for different audiences.

The movie will be released sometime in 2014.

Luc Besson Wants to Make a FIFTH ELEMENT Sequel

I watched Luc Besson's The Fifth Element the other night, and I was impressed by what Besson did with so little of the special effects technology that Hollywood now uses today to make their films. He did the best he could, but it would be interesting to see what that movie would look like if it were made today. Maybe one day we'll see a sequel though, which I think would also be kind of cool.

In a recent interview with The Playlist, Besson was asked which film of his he'd like to direct a sequel to, and this was his response.

The Fifth Element. I was a little bit frustrated because I made the film right before all the new effects arrived. So when I did the film it was all blue screen, six hours, dots on the wall, takes forever to do one shot. Now, basically, you put the camera on your shoulder and then you run and then you add a couple of dinosaurs and spaceships. And I was so frustrated because it was not so easy at the time. So I always think to myself that I would avenge one day and use all the new tools to do a sci-fi film for sure....

I don't know if it would be directly connected [to The Fifth Element] but it would be the same area and the same genre. So for me it would be connected even if the stories had nothing to do with each other.

Would you like to see Besson make a sequel to The Fifth Element?

Hilarious '80s Opener for Breaking Bad Spin Off BETTER CALL SAUL!

So I know there is only going to be one hour-long prequel on the origin of Breaking Bad's sleazy lawyer Saul Goodman, but after watching this great '80s opener, I really wish there was going to be more! Bob Odenkirk is such a great and bizarre mind that I think he could captivate audiences for more than one episode as the lead. Hopefully if people like the prequel enough it will convince Vince Gilligan and crew to make more!

MAMA Director to Take on THE MUMMY

$

Mama director Andy Muschietti is in talks to direct The Mummy reboot being developed at Universal Pictures by producers Sean Daniel, Alex Kurtzman, and Roberto Orci.

If he ends up getting the gig, he will replace Len Wiseman, who dropped out of the project. The script for the film was written by Jon Spaihts, and it's a top priority for the studio, so they are hoping to get it into production soon.

This has been described as a very different mummy movie. Apparently it's a darker twist on the material and will be a scarier version. Wiseman previously talked about the pitch that Kurtzman and Orci came up with, saying,

One of the things that interested me with this mummy is, he’s still in essence a man. They haven’t turned his brain into a monster brain. He still has a personality and is very cunning and calculating. He’s a true character in any form, and in creature form, even if he is that staggering creature, it becomes more important that he’s a thinking, calculating person.

This has the potential to be a very cool and different movie, and I'm looking forward to seeing what they end up doing with it. Muschietti seems like a decent director, I liked the first half of Mama, but the second half was terrible. It was great visually, though. What do you think about the possibility of him directing The Mummy?

"The idea behind this painting is that X-Men villain Magneto has just taken out a Sentinel and is now using his powers to essentially reanimate it as a "chariot" of sorts as he declares war on some unfortunate party off-screen."

A couple of months ago it was reported that Julianne Moore was in talks to join The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2. Lionsgate has officially announced that she will play District 13 leader Alma Coin.

Coin is the President of District 13 and the leader of the rebellion against the Capitol by the people of the districts of Panem. She is first introduced when Katniss Everdeen meets her in District 13. She ends up clashing with the heroine as her methods and motivations draw suspicion.

Here's the press release:

Lionsgate announced today that four-time Academy Award® nominee Julianne Moore (BOOGIE NIGHTS, THE HOURS, THE END OF THE AFFAIR and FAR FROM HEAVEN) has joined the cast of THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PARTS 1 & 2 as President Alma Coin, the leader of the rebellion against the Capitol.
Moore will star opposite Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth in the third and fourth installments of the global blockbuster HUNGER GAMES franchise, slated for release in November 2014 and November 2015, respectively. She will join new cast members including Natalie Dormer, Stef Dawson and Evan Ross.
In addition to her four Oscar-nominated roles, Moore has previously starred in CRAZY STUPID LOVE, THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT, CHILDREN OF MEN and last year’s HBO political drama film GAME CHANGE, which netted her an Emmy®, Golden Globe® and SAG Award®. Steam Family Sharing to Allow Digital Lending in the Near Future

$

Valve has yet again shown their ability to listen to their customers and has announced a “Family Sharing” feature for their Steam digital distribution platform. Fans have been seeking a way to trade or loan games for ages, especially after Origin, EA’s digital distribution platform, announced their “Digital Return Policy.” The upcoming Steam Family Sharing system, which will enter beta in mid-September, allows users to share their libraries with others, but each library can only be used by one player at a time.

The shared libraries are linked to the computer, not another account, so if multiple people are sharing one physical computer they can all share games without any complication. If you want to share your games with a friend, it will link to that person’s computer, not their account, so they can only access the games while they are on that machine. For example; If I share my Steam library with my wife’s computer, she has access while on that PC. If she goes over to a friend’s house, or uses her laptop, she will not have access to my games unless I also share my library with those devices. You can share your game library with up to ten devices at a time, but again, only one person can play at a time so you might end up stepping on each other's toes.

I like the idea of this system. It allows people in close proximity to easily share games, but also allows you to lend games remotely. The security measures outlined on the announcement site sound adequate enough, because the owner will be able to take back his games at any time and will automatically kick everyone else off if they are using his library.

My only complaint is I wish that you could lend games individually, rather than your library as a whole. It would make it far more convenient and would more closely resemble “disc lending” (where you physically give a game disc to another), but I understand why Valve set it up the way it is. It significantly reduces the chance of abusing the system. Valve doesn’t want the Family Sharing system to enable people to trade games. I would love Steam to have a game reselling function, but I doubt it would ever happen.

The Steam Family Sharing beta launches mid-September. How to sign up for the beta and the complete info can be found at the official site.

Justin Bieber Is NOT Going to Be in BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN

It's moments like this that I hate the internet, and my faith in the people behind it is shaken. It seems like almost every freakin' ass movie website ran a piece of news telling their readers that Justin Bieber might be up for the role of Robin in the Man of Steel sequel Batman Vs. Superman. Why? Because Bieber posted the picture above on his Instagram account. Well, it's just not true.

It's really not that hard to make a fake script cover, people! You don't even have to be rich to do it. On top of the that, before the male pop whore posted the picture, he sent out a tweet saying he was "Off to do something funny or…die :)"

Now anyone with common sense and half of a brain would put together that Bieber is most likely doing a Funny or Die comedy sketch that will feature him being up for the role for Batman Vs. Superman, and the script he's holding is a prop from that sketch.

I seriously doubt the script for the actual Batman Vs. Superman film is even finished. Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck probably don't even have a script for the movie in their hands yet. Don't worry people, Bieber is not playing Robin, even though he does look a lot like 13-year old Carrie Kelley from Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns.

The internet makes me sad sometimes. There is so much less common sense than I thought.

In case you were looking for more confirmation about the Sinister Six in Marc Webb's Amazing Spider-Man movie franchise, Jamie Foxx recently talked to Total Film, and was asked if he'd like to return to the franchise as a part of the Sinister Six. This was his response,

"Yes, they actually talked about it, the Sinister Six. So, fingers crossed, because when you think about it, electricity never dies, it just goes to a different place."

I think it's a safe bet that the Sinister Six is going to play a role in these films. I'm just looking forward to seeing how they end up being portrayed in the films.

Channing Tatum is included in the same interview, and when asked what superhero he would want to play in a film, he chose X-Men's Gambit. You can watch Foxx and Tatum talk about it in the interview below.
