Robert Zemeckis to Direct the Sci-Fi Film CHAOS WALKING

Director Robert Zemeckis is looking to jump back behind the camera to bring us an adaptation of the young adult sci-fi series by Patrick Ness called Chaos Walking. There are three novels in the series, setting up a potential new franchise at Lionsgate.

Zemeckis is currently in negotiations to direct the film, which is set in a dystopian future where humans have colonized a distant Earth-like planet. "When an infection called the Noise suddenly makes all thought audible, privacy vanishes and chaos ensues, leading a corrupt autocrat to threaten to take control of the human settlements and wage war with the indigenous alien race."

This sounds like it would be a great project for the legendary director who brought us classic films such as Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, Cast Away, and more. I've enjoyed watching most of Zemeckis' work over the years, and if he ends up taking this movie on I think he'll do a great job with it.

Here's a description from the book:

Todd Hewitt is the only boy in a town of men. Ever since the settlers were infected with the Noise germ, Todd can hear everything the men think, and they hear everything he thinks. Todd is just a month away from becoming a man, but in the midst of the cacophony, he knows that the town is hiding something from him — something so awful Todd is forced to flee with only his dog, whose simple, loyal voice he hears too. With hostile men from the town in pursuit, the two stumble upon a strange and eerily silent creature: a girl. Who is she? Why wasn’t she killed by the germ like all the females on New World? Propelled by Todd’s gritty narration, readers are in for a white-knuckle journey in which a boy on the cusp of manhood must unlearn everything he knows in order to figure out who he truly is.

AMERICAN PSYCHO TV Series Sequel Being Developed by FX

The FX network has announced that they will be developing a TV series sequel to Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho. The series will be a follow-up to the 1991 book and 2000 feature film.

The story revolves around Patrick Bateman, a Manhattan executive with a secret life as a serial killer. Bateman seemingly relished his upscale lifestyle and like-minded friends, whom he secretly despised.

The series will pick up with Bateman who is now in his mid-50s, "but as outrageous and lethal as ever -- takes on a protege, in a sadistic social experiment, who will become every bit his equal, creating the next generation American Psycho."

There's a lot of potential here for this to be a great series. With Dexter ending soon, this might end up being a good replacement for audiences looking to fulfill their serial killer TV show needs.

First Look at Jason Statham and James Franco in New Thriller HOMEFRONT

Jason Statham and James Franco have teamed up for a new thriller called Homefront, which is based on the best-selling novel by Chuck Logan. Sylvester Stallone wrote the script. We have our first look at the two actors today in a few photos that were released on USA Today. The story follows a DEA agent who moves to a small town after he's finished with his life fighting crime. As you might expect, once he moves to the small town he ends up fighting crime again. Director Gary Fleder talked about the film a little, explaining,

"Broker (Statham) is trying to live off the grid with his daughter, live the idyllic life. But then he runs into Gator (Franco), who has a lot of people in town afraid. Looking at it within the paradigm of the classic Western, Gator is the guy with the black hat on. Even the sheriff doesn't want to mess with him."

Statham talked about his role in the film as well, saying,

"I've done certain kind of roles up to now, and this is different from the usual tough guy role. In this film you get to see the lighter side of me yet there is still the tough guy element in the character."

The movie also stars Winona Ryder, and I'm curious to see how it turns out. I think it will be a good one though.

G.I. JOE 3 to Be Written by Snow White and the Huntsman Scribe

Jon M. Chu's G.I. Joe 3 has a screenwriter. Paramount Pictures has hired Snow White and the Huntsman writer Evan Daugherty. He also wrote the films The Killing Season, Divergent, and the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film. I'm pretty sure the next G.I. Joe film is going to end up with another mediocre script.

I've given up hope on the G.I. Joe movie franchise. I personally think the only way to save it at this point is reboot it with an actually talented team of filmmakers. As long as they continue down this road with what the studio currently has in place we can expect more crappy G.I. Joe movies.

GODZILLA First Look From the New Movie?

This is a licensing Expo poster for the Gareth Edwards directed reboot of Godzilla. A lot of other movie sites seem to believe that this is our first real look at the creature, but I'm not fully convinced. I think they just used that image to slap on a licensing poster, but I don't think it's the real thing.

Back at San Diego Comic-Con an up-close image of a face of Godzilla leaked out which you can see here. This looks like a similar design. The thing is... we were told that Godzilla design was not the final design for the actual film. I think this is just another temporary placeholder design to help get people excited, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

An epic rebirth to Toho’s iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.

The movie stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn, Bryan Cranston, and Sally Hawkins. The movie hits theaters on May 16th, 2014.

First Bizarre Trailer for ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW Disneyland Film

The first trailer has been released for Escape From Tomorrow! This is the film that was secretly shot at DisneyLand and Disney World, and now you will have your first real idea of how trippy, bizarre, and insane this movie really is! I enjoyed it because of how over the top it was. It starts out fairly normal, but quickly escalates into utter madness!

Jim White is an average American family man, mostly content to exist within his humdrum reality. At the tail end of a theme park vacation with his loving wife and two beautiful children, he is awakened by an unsettling phone call from his boss, who tells him that he has lost his job. Unwilling to disturb their sabbatical, Jim holds off on breaking the news to his family so they can enjoy their last day at the idyllic and beloved tourist destination. In desperate need of a distraction, he finds one amidst the long lines at the park—two attractive and fun-loving teenage girls. In his fractured state, Jim falls obsessively in love, making any excuse he can to follow them everywhere. Along the way, his paranoid psyche spirals even further downward, and the fine line between fantasy and reality becomes blurred.

The movie is set to be released on October 11th, and if it's playing at a theater near you I suggest you check it out. It's a crazy ride!

Joss Whedon Discusses James Spader in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

About a week ago, Marvel announced that they had cast James Spader in the role of Ultron in Joss Whedon's Avengers sequel. That was a surprising, yet awesome, casting announcement. In a recent interview Whedon said Spader was fist first choice to take on the villain, and he explained why. This is what he told Marvel:

"Spader was my first and only choice, he's got that hypnotic voice that can be eerily calm and compelling. But he's also very human and humorous. Ultron is not Hal, Spader can play all of the levels. He's the guy to break the Avengers into pieces."

He then apparently included a maniacal evil laugh. I never had any doubt that Spader would be awesome in role, and I'm excited to see what he brings to the character.

Avengers: Age of Ultron will bring our favorite heroes back together again, along with a few new ones to face one of their deadliest foes yet. It's set to be released on May 1st, 2015!

Editorial: The Trap of Hardware Loyalty

$

This last weekend I spent quite a bit of time at Salt Lake Comic Con. As I talked with the other attendees and they discovered I was a video game journalist, almost every single person asked me either one or both of the same two questions. “Is the Wii U worth buying?” or “Are you excited for the Xbox One/PS4?”. These questions bug me for multiple reasons. Not just because I had to to answer them dozens of times (and here I am doing it once more), but because they aren't the right questions to be asking.

We’ll start with the first question; “Is the Wii U worth buying.” For me? I only have one to do reviews, so the answer is no. For others? I have no idea! What is a video game console besides a way to play the games published for it (and Netflix, never forget Netflix)? The better question is “How much would I pay to play game X?”

Let’s say that the only game you want to play for the Wii U is Pikmin 3. That means the cost of playing it would be $360. $300 for the Wii U and $60 for the game (yes, I know you can get things for less than full retail, but this is just an example). For most people, this is way too expensive for just a single gaming experience. How about if you wanted to play six titles for the Wii U? That would be $660 in total, but only $110 each. Still expensive, but far less than the $360 for just one game.

I’m not asking everyone who is contemplating purchasing a Wii U to break out a calculator and go crazy with some math to decide if they should buy it, but this is the basic process that should, if it doesn't already, go through everyone’s heads. How much are you willing to pay for the gaming experiences you want? That’s what buying a console is all about. Very few people buy a console then never buy games for it, because what would be the point? The goal is the games. If there are enough games that you want to play to mitigate the cost of the console purchase, then that’s a greenlight on the purchase. Otherwise, wait until the software lineup is up to snuff.

The second question is, ultimately, about the same thing as the first, just with a different timeline. “Are you excited for the Xbox One/PS4?” Not for the console, no. Why would I be excited for a black box that does basically the same thing as the other three black boxes in my entertainment center? On the other hand, am I excited for some games coming exclusively to these console? Hell yes.

I understand where the question comes from, and when I was a child I felt the same way. The thought of getting a new gaming console was like walking through a door to an alternate world filled with adventure. The possibilities were endless! It allowed me to be a knight saving kingdoms, a god controlling vast armies or a boy with a cohort of loyal animal companions attempting to become the very best. Unfortunately, the passage of time has dulled my sense of wonder. Now I have plenty of devices that can provide me entertaining gaming experiences, so what makes these new ones any different?

I can still be excited for some of the next generation games on the horizon, like The Division or Titanfall, but for the console that runs them? Meh. The prospect of controlling my TV with my voice doesn't really excite me. Motion controls? Social media interactivity? Offscreen play? Bleh. These are all buzzwords I’ve heard in the past and been disappointed by. The PS4 and the Xbox One by themselves are nothing more than expensive Blu-Ray and Netflix players, but the games they offer? THAT is what I can get excited about.

What I’m trying to get at is; I really dislike hardware loyalty. Buying a PS4 or an Xbox One because “You owned all of the others,” or you are a “fanboy” is one hundred percent the wrong reason to be buying a console. Not only are you potentially wasting your money, you are doing your best to prevent product advancement. Is the highest quality, most innovative product going to get the most sales? Maybe not, because so many people today buy without thinking.

Are you really going to get an Xbox One and play with the new Kinect and TV functionality for hours? I doubt it. Most people will probably mess around with it for the first couple of weeks, then never touch it again. Superfluous “features” are not a reason to buy a console. If you plan on buying one of the next-gen consoles, do it for the right reason. Games. That’s why we are all here, so do your part to make the video gaming industry a better place and buy smart.

FX has released another trailer for American Horror Story: Coven and it's the first to feature the main cast of the series. It's called "Initiation," and it includes Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Taissa Farmiga, and Evan Peters. I've always had a fascination with the supernatural history of witches, and this is sure to be a really great third season. Enjoy the latest trailer!

Coven features a great cast of actors that includes Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Sarah Paulson, Frances Conroy, Gabourey Sidibe, Denis O'Hare, Patti LuPone, Evans Peters, Taissa Farmiga, Lily Rabe, and Emma Roberts.

Coven tells the secret history of witches and witchcraft in America. Over 300 years have passed since the turbulent days of the Salem witch trials and those who managed to escape are now facing extinction. Mysterious attacks have been escalating against their kind and young girls are being sent away to a special school in New Orleans to learn how to protect themselves. Wrapped up in the turmoil is new arrival, Zoe (Farmiga), who is harboring a terrifying secret of her own. Alarmed by the recent aggression, Fiona (Lange), the long-absent Supreme, sweeps back into town, determined to protect the Coven and hell-bent on decimating anyone who gets in her way.

JURASSIC WORLD - Concept Trailer For Cancelled Game

Yesterday it was announced that Jurassic Park 4 would be called Jurassic World. Today there's some kind of pitch trailer for the film that has hit the internet. Some people are saying it's for the movie, others are saying it's for a cancelled video game. Producer Frank Marshall clarified things on his twitter account, saying that this isn't part of the film, but it's still a fun watch! The special effects aren't the best, and it looks like one of those laughable Asylum movies. Here's a note from the guy who posted the video,

"All I can say is this video was shown as part of Iain McCaig's presentation at the recent Star Wars convention in Germany (he's the fantastic concept artist and designer of Darth Maul). I can only presume it was part of a pitch for reigniting the JP movie franchise, if anyone can confirm please let me know. It was apparently shown to Kathleen Kennedy and Steven Spielberg. Mr McCaig actually said "it certainly got Steven interested in dinosaurs again..." I just think is so cool!"

Incredible and Touching Animated Short - LITTLE FREAK

You've got to check out this amazing CG animated short film called "Little Freak." It was directed by Edwin Schaap, and it's an incredibly touching story. The acting, animated facial expressions, and script are are top notch as well. I think you're all really going to enjoy this one. Here's the synopsis:

A young deformed boy lives as a side-show freak. When his father asks him to make a birthday-wish he starts to imagine...
It's a metaphor for the expactation some parents have with their children, without seeing that they have other ambitions and their own dreams.

I really hope you like this stunning short film.

Memoria: The Importance of Storytelling

$

I recently finished Daedalic Entertainment’s point-and-click adventure, Memoria. I was planning on writing a review, but this article is going to be something different. If you want a review, here it is: The gameplay is pretty standard for a point-and-click. You interact with your environment in a variety of ways, including through dialogue and magic. If you like point-and-clicks, you’ll like this one. If you don’t, this isn’t the game for you. With that “review” out of the way, I want to write about how this game affected me.

What really grabbed me about Memoria was its beautiful story and powerful themes. The story follows Geron, a bird catcher who finds himself caught up in a mysterious series of events as he tries to restore his beloved Nuri, a raven, to her original human form. As he does so, he learns of a hero from another time, the princess Sadja. Through Geron’s dreams, you play through Sadja’s story as well. These two storylines intertwine in unexpected ways, and through these stories and characters, a thought-provoking tale emerges.

The crux of the story is a place called the Garden of Oblivion. This garden is hidden from time and reality. This means that nothing that happens in the garden actually happened as far as the rest of the world is concerned. If you break a twig inside the garden, when you take the twig out, it will not be broken. Your breaking of the twig “never happened.” Once outside, you can talk about what happened in the garden, and you will convince Time that it actually happened. However, this creates a loophole. You can say that something happened in the garden even if it never actually did. You could go into the garden, take a twig, then walk out and say that you broke it, and it would be broken.

Already, an interesting theme begins to emerge. What is real? What is merely story? In this game, sometimes story can trump reality. A convincing story can persuade Time itself that a particular event happened. But is the garden the only way this phenomenon can occur? In our world, can story be more “real” than reality?

This theme is expanded on as we learn more about Sadja, the princess from the past. You learn her story from the perspective of her traveling companion, a magical staff. Since the story is told from his point of view, there are a few gaps, and he acts as somewhat of an unreliable narrator. As you delve more into Sadja’s story, you learn that she was not actually a princess at all. She was a peasant girl who wanted to live on forever through stories. She wanted to achieve greatness so that people would speak her name through the generations. She understood that who she really was didn’t matter--what really mattered to her is who people remembered her as. If she could be remembered as a heroic princess, then she would be a heroic princess forever.

The final incident of the game reinforces this idea. At the end of the game, you receive access to the magic that will restore Nuri to her human form, but it will destroy her memory. You have to choose whether you would rather have her stay in her raven form while retaining her memories of her and Geron’s time together, or if you want her to regain her human form but to forget all those memories. If she becomes human again, those experiences that she had with Geron will exist to her only as stories.

This theme really got me thinking, and I’ve been mulling about this for the past few days. What is reality but the way it is perceived and remembered? History is a collection of stories told by a series of unreliable narrators. Even our own realities. If we fail to tell our own stories, they become forgotten. This is why storytelling is important today. For example, Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables is perhaps just as “real” or important as many real events from French history. Fairy tales, legends, myths, novels, comic books, movies--these stories, these characters, these lessons are a real part of our culture. If we are going to learn and remember, we have to keep telling stories.

New Zombie Series THE RETURNED Coming to the Sundance Channel

Zombies are so popular now that even the Sundance Channel is looking to jump on the bandwagon! The cable network has been looking for original series to air. This is an eight part French zombie drama called The Returned. The series will premiere on Halloween, which is two weeks after AMC's The Walking Dead returns for its fourth season.

The drama is based on the feature film Les Revenants, and it sounds like it will be an awesome series! It's "set in a French mountain town where a seemingly random group of people find themselves in a state of confusion as they attempt to return to their homes. What they don't know yet is that they have been dead for several years, and no one is expecting them back. As they struggle to reintegrate with their families and past lovers, buried secrets emerge and new mysteries develop as they grapple with a miraculous and sinister new reality. But it seems they are not the only ones to have returned from the dead. Their arrival coincides with a series of gruesome murders, which bear a chilling resemblance to the work of a serial killer from the past."

This series sounds like it could be amazing. Sundance president Sarah Barnett had this to say in a statement,

"We decided to take zombies to a new and utterly original level -- we made them French! The Returned is smart entertainment that shocks and entertains at every turn. We think our audience will love how this series grounds the supernatural in deeply human emotions."
The series is set to premiere on October 31st at 9 p.m. and air Thursdays at 9 p.m. I can't wait to watch it!

Salt Lake City Comic-Con is the Next Big Geek Convention

When I attended Salt Lake City's first Comic-Con this last weekend, I'll admit I wasn't expecting much, but it ended up blowing me away. I had no idea the convention would be as fun or as big as it was. I go to a lot of conventions throughout the year, and this put most of them to shame.

Deseret News reports that more than 50,000 tickets were sold, but I think a lot more than that that showed up. At one point the Fire Marshall showed up and had to shut the doors, not allowing anymore people into the Salt Palace convention center because it was already over capacity.

Not only was it bigger than I thought, but the people putting it on were also surprised by the turnout. Event creator Dan Farr had this to say in a statement,

"Talk about a wild ride. This Comic Con has gotten so much bigger than we ever imagined. This is has gone better than my wildest dreams.”

Keep in mind this is the first Comic-Con in Salt Lake City, and you can bet your ass it's going to grow. They're definitely going to need a bigger venue though! Maybe they will expand on the already existing Salt Palace.

Some of the biggest guests included William Shatner, Stan Lee, and Adam West. I even got a video of Lee coming out of the bathroom, which was a little strange. There were a ton of other celebrities as well, and a ton of talented artists were in attendance. On top of that, the cosplay was incredible! I wish I got more photos, but I was too busy. I've posted some of them below.

I had a blast, and I'm excited to see what they do next year. I'm sure they'll end up getting even more star power next year, because they've proved that there is a huge audience for geek awesomeness in the area. This is going to quickly become a must-attend event.

This convention is only to get bigger and bigger over time.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5 - Plot Details Emerge, Release Date Moves

$

0

Disney has moved the release date of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales from the summer of 2015 to the summer of 2016. The reason for the delay is to make sure that the script right. It's currently being written by Jeff Nathanson, and it's being directed by the amazingly talented directors of Kon-Tiki,  Joachim Roenning and Espen Sandberg.

Thanks to Bleeding Cool, we also have a few possible plot details from the fifth installment of the franchise. The script is still in progress, so some of the details revealed are subject to change. Here's the site's description of what they know.

First of all, there’s going to be a new female lead, a sparring partner for Jack Sparrow. She’s nothing like him, mind you – despite being suspected of witchcraft, she’s actually a woman of science. Expect some sexual chemistry, but also expect it to be a touch one sided…
There’s more to her character, but the best stuff is very spoilery.
As for witches, they’re central to whole conceit. There are some other, actual witches involved. If Tia Dalma, from the second and third films, makes another appearance, it’s a minor one but it’ll be very easy to leave her out. These new witches have somewhat less of a hoodoo flavouring.
Keeping up the supernatural flavour, there’s also going to be a ghost in a leading role. It’s this character, a former member of the British military now sided with Barbossa on a revenge mission, that gives the film its title.
And just in case you miss the other half of the equation, the dripping wet Orlando Bloom or Keira Knightley roles, they’ll this time go to a couple of pretty young Brits from farming families. They’re pure subplot fodder, however, and if anything gets the chop it will be these two.
I can tell you that the film starts with a rather awkward wedding and climaxes with a riff on the myth of the Bermuda Triangle.
All in all, it seems to be just the sort of thing you’d expect from a Pirates movie.

There's a good chance this will be a great movie. I normally wouldn't be excited about another Pirates film, but I'm sold on the directors the studio brought on to develop it, and I have faith that they won't deliver a crappy movie. I honestly think that this could end up being the best movie in the franchise.

BREAKING BAD Saul Goodman Spin-Off Series Is a Go at AMC!

For awhile we've been hearing about a Breaking Bad spin-off series that would center on the great character Saul Goodman, who is played by Bob Odenkirk. A couple of months ago Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan said he was developing the series with writer Peter Gould, the writer who came up with the character in the second season of the hit series.

AMC has now decided that they are going to move forward with the series, and now there are some confirmed details. It is being developed under the title Better Call Saul. It will be an hour long prequel that will focus on the evolution of the popular Saul Goodman before he ever became Walter White’s lawyer.

Goodman is such a great character in the series, and it will be fun to see the evolution of that character. I'm excited to see that this spin-off is happening. Breaking Bad may be coming to an end, but this gives fans something else to look forward to.
