Awkward Geek Confession: My Love for Romantic Anime

0
0

I love anime. This in itself is hardly a revealing declaration, but I have a secret when it comes to which anime I enjoy. A horribly emasculating secret. I love romantic drama anime.

I was originally introduced to anime by my uncle at an early age. He showed me the classics, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, and the like, but when I went to head back home he gave me a burned CD labeled “Escaflowne.” A few days later I decided to give this new show a shot and instantly fell in love. A raucous love story with giant robot knights and an awesome male lead that rides a dragon! It was my ungainly teenage dream. My exposure to Escaflowne was the beginning of the end. Through the years I have seen countless anime series, but I am here now to talk about my five favorite romantic dramas.

5. The Vision of Escaflowne

This is on the list because not only was it my first romantic series but, as I previously mentioned, robot knights and dragon riding. The series revolves around Hitomi, a high school student who gets teleported to a fantasy world called Gaea. She quickly gets swept up into an adventure of warring kingdoms, two manly princes (I always identified with Van more since, you know, he rides an effing dragon), giant robot knights, and more. Of course, Hitomi begins to fall in love with both princes and in the end she has to pick one in a super emotional, cinematic scene that I just eat up. In the past I would have ranked this higher on the list, but after watching it recently the animation is a little more dated than I remember, although it is still definitely worth the watch.

4. Love Hina

Love Hina has one of the most cliche anime premises of all time, and I love it. The series begins with Keitaro Urashima attempting to get into Tokyo U, failing, and in an attempt to study for a better second attempt he travels to his Grandma who runs an apartment complex. Through a series of unlikely and wacky events, Keitaro ends up running the apartments filled with women basically his same age. Perfect coincidence, right? As far as anime tropes go, Love Hina has them all. Long lost promises, accidentally walking in on people in the bath, love triangles, a female lead who instantly becomes gorgeous the second she takes her glasses off, nosebleeds, and ridiculous bouncing-down-the-hallway punches. The story quickly begins to revolve around Keitaro and one of the residents' relationship, which is filled with classic misunderstanding and other relationship drama. Every twist and turn pulled at my heartstrings, even through the Summer and Winter specials (the winter special has this one scene where Keitaro tries to get a Christmas gift for Naru… I can’t even talk about it without getting excited, it’s just so freaking adorable).

3. Ouran High School Host Club

For Ouran High School Host Club, I at least have a good excuse for starting to watch it. I did it for a girl. Did that stop me from enjoying it immensely and finishing the series by myself? Hell no. This one revolves around Haruhi, a poor transfer student to a ritzy private high school. Through a series of misadventures she gets roped into being in the Host Club, a group of guys who go on dates with girls and make them feel like princesses. The twist is that Haruhi is a girl, but since she has short hair, no one noticed. Once the other members of the Host Club find out, the love triangles begin. Ouran is actually really well done and manages to avoid many of the tropes Love Hina thrives on, although there is a beach sequence where one of the males leads is running in slow motion in his swimsuit and the setting sun is shimmering in the background. Classic. The relationship stuff becomes more important near the end as the competition comes to a head and there is an darling scene involving Haruhi’s fear of thunder.

2. Ef: A Tale of Memories

A Tale of Memories is easily the most dramatic entry on this list. One of the main characters loses her memories after 13 hours, another is already in a relationship and becomes obsessed with another girl he barely knows, there is a disapproving priest and a feisty, independent minx. Even just writing about it is giving me chills again. It is hard to provide a proper synopsis for this series since it is so complex and so much happens. All you need to know is, memory loss, professions of love, running away, searching through the city on a bike in the rain, more professions of love (also in the rain) and promises to always be together. It is deliciously dramatic, and the emotional development is absurdly over the top. It is almost my favorite.

1. Ah! My Goddess! (OVAs, Original Video Animation)

First off, I need to clarify which version of this I watched. I watched the OVAs before the full show was released, and I still like the OVAs better than the standard 24 episode cycle (for nostalgia and, honestly, I like the pacing better in the OVAs). OVAs are basically an anime mini-series, the episodes are longer but there a fewer of them. With that out of the way, let’s talk Ah! My Goddess!

I think the reason this anime holds a special place in my heart is because I am basically the main character. Keiichi likes to fix and build things, I like to build and fix things. He likes motorcycles, I like motorcycles. He has girl problems, I had girl problems! These similarities made it really easy to relate to Keiichi when he accidentally calls a Goddess Helpline, summons the Goddess Belldandy and jokingly wishes for them to be together forever. The wish is granted and hijinks commence. There are lots of twists and turns as their relationship evolves, but the reason Ah! My Goddess! is my favorite romantic anime is the last episode. In an attempt to avoid spoilers I will have to be vague, but it involves rule breaking, Goddess-napping, rings, lots of yelling, and pillars of light. Overall, pretty damn awesome.

There you have it, my embarrassment put plain for all to see. I don’t mind, though. I have learned to be proud of my penchant for romantic media (also, it helps pick up the ladies at anime conventions). Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to rewatch Keiichi’s misadventures attempting to woo a Goddess.

New AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN Teaser - Coffin

This is the latest bizarre teaser trailer for FX's American Horror Story: Coven. It's called "Coffin," and well... it features a woman who has been buried alive in a coffin. I've actually had a reccurring nightmare about this since I was a little kid, and the thought of it scares the hell out of me. Do I have issues?

The creepy awesome series is set to return on October 9th!

Coven features a great cast of actors that include Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Sarah Paulson, Frances Conroy, Gabourey Sidibe, Denis O'Hare, Patti LuPone, Evans Peters, Taissa Farmiga, Lily Rabe, and Emma Roberts.

Coven tells the secret history of witches and witchcraft in America. Over 300 years have passed since the turbulent days of the Salem witch trials and those who managed to escape are now facing extinction. Mysterious attacks have been escalating against their kind and young girls are being sent away to a special school in New Orleans to learn how to protect themselves. Wrapped up in the turmoil is new arrival, Zoe (Farmiga), who is harboring a terrifying secret of her own. Alarmed by the recent aggression, Fiona (Lange), the long-absent Supreme, sweeps back into town, determined to protect the Coven and hell-bent on decimating anyone who gets in her way.

Epic STAR WARS Wookie Cosplay!

This is one of the best and coolest Star Wars cosplay outfits I've ever seen. This Wookie cosplay is the character Tarfful from The Revenge of the Sith, and it's jaw-droppingly awesome. The video comes from YouTuber plaigeous, who says,

This costume test was to see how an 8' 2" wookie costume would work in a practical way. Overcoming the difficulties of running, fighting, kneeling, rough terrain, etc. whilst wearing 15 inch stilts. Shooting on a Red MX camera it was also important to see how something this large would be framed in shot with other characters and how to light it correctly.

It was made by me in my workshops in Ireland. It consists of an underskull with moving jaw which activates the sound system.

As you can see, it turned out to be pretty amazing.

Steampunk IRON MAN and OPTIMUS PRIME Helmets

The steampunk look is so cool, but it seems like it would be an expensive scene to get in to. Especially with those amazingly detailed costumes and gear. Etsy user Captain Bayley has created a couple of radical steampunk helmets for Iron Man and Optimus Prime. I love how they turned out!

Fox continues to pump out fun, imaginative posters for Ben Stiller's The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. These next two posters feature the main character standing on the moon and walking up the side of a building like Spider-Man.

James Thurber's classic story of a day-dreamer who escapes his anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action. When his job along with that of his co-worker (Kristen Wiig) are threatened, Walter takes action in the real world embarking on a global journey that turns into an adventure more extraordinary than anything he could have ever imagined.

The movie comes out on December 25th, 2013, and I can't wait to see it!

What If Mark Wahlberg Was IRON MAN - Comedy Short

0
0

Not long ago, Mark Wahlberg said that he would be interested in taking over Iron Man when Robert Downey Jr. is done with it. Official Comedy created this funny short that gives us a look at what Iron Man might be like if it was set in Boston and starred Wahlberg. The guy they got to play the actor may not really look like him, but he's definitely got the vocal impression down.

The short features Tony Stark battling The Mandarin and Obadiah Stane while trying to save Pepper and Fenway Park. It's pretty entertaining, and I hope you enjoy it!

This latest international trailer for Thor: The Dark World has a few bits of new footage scattered throughout it, but nothing major. The trailer is also in German, but if you've seen the previous trailer then you know what everyone is saying. I'm sure we'll see a couple more trailers before this movie is released, and we'll get to see a ton of new footage in them in the near future.

The movie hits theaters on November 8th, 2013.

MIGHTY NO. 9 Rolls Past Kickstarter Goal

0
0

There has been a lot of talk this last week regarding one of the newest video game Kickstarters, Mighty No. 9.

Mighty No. 9 is a “classic Japanese side-scrolling action” game which looks very similar to Mega Man, which really isn’t a huge surprise, considering it is being made by a bunch of veteran Mega Man developers, including Keiji Inafune, the man who has been either a Character Designer or Producer on almost every single Mega Man game ever made.

The side-scrolling action isn't too big of a similarity to Mega Man, but your main character, Beck, gather’s new abilities by defeating the enemy Boss robots (Might Nos. 1-8). Combined with the familiar concept art, the resemblance is uncanny. Is any of this a bad thing? Of course not! Mega Man is a highly prolific series that I have enjoyed greatly over the years, so I don’t mind that Mighty No. 9 might end up as a spruced up Mega Man game. Keiji Inafune insists that his latest project is different and unique from anything he has done in the past, but I definitely see the resemblance and think it’s a good thing!

The original $900,000 funding goal was reached in just under two of the thirty-one days and has since climbed to a hair under $2 million, blowing past stretch goals such as: additional levels, Mac and Linux releases, and a “Making Of” documentary. Future stretch goals include current and next-gen console releases, an extra end stage, and even a co-op mode! Considering the rate funds are pouring into this project, I would not be surprised to see Mighty No. 9 gather the $3.3 million required for a PS4 and XBOX One release.

With Mighty No. 9 already a success, which it will only become more-so as the month progresses, I can’t help but wonder how Capcom feels about the project. Usgamer.net interviewed Inafune about this issue, and he doesn't seem concerned. I hope he is correct in his nonchalance regarding any legal issues. I would love to see it reach completion without any significant roadblocks.

Mighty No. 9 will be released on PC, Mac, and Linux (so far) sometime in Spring 2015.

Want to Play a Game of DOCTOR WHO RISK?

0
0

Doctor Who Risk actually exists, and you buy it here, thanks to Forbidden Planet! I love Doctor Who, and Risk is the only board game I've really ever enjoyed playing, so the fact that they've been combined is pretty epic! The Doctor Who universe fits the game of Risk perfectly, and this is a must-own for any fan! Here's a description from the site:

Earth. Early 20th century. The planet has faced many invasions in the past, but never has mankind faced an assault like this, as multiple Dalek armies descend from the skies, seeking to destroy one another and conquer the world.
Many years ago, an ancient artefact was hidden somewhere on the planet, an artefact that will enable the Daleks to reign supreme across the universe, defeating any who stand in their way. Such an object is so valuable that even the Daleks cannot agree how best to wield it, and have split into renegade armies, each as cunning and determined as the next.
Play as one of 5 different armies, either classic (Black, Bronze & Silver) or New Dalek Paradigm (Red & Yellow)as you invade Earth seeking the ancient weapon. Only once all opposition has been wiped out can you begin the search - will you be the last Dalek army left? Watch out for the TARDIS sweeping round the board to defend Earth!
As you fight for supremacy, the Doctor will do his best to stop you, bringing peace to a different territory each turn, and if your army is not victorious by his eleventh regeneration, then the battle is over and all Daleks must retreat as the Oncoming Storm saves the Earth.
With special power cards to boost your forces or destroy your plans, and special missions to defeat other invading forces, this game of Risk is an epic battle for control of the Earth...and the universe.

Hugh Jackman's Wolverine Almost Appeared in SPIDER-MAN

0
0

It would be amazing to see the Marvel characters owned by other studios start appearing with each other on the big screen. It seems like if it ever happens, it's not going to be for a very very long time. But according to Hugh Jackman, it almost did happen once! In an interview with The Huffington Post he explains that Wolverine almost showed up in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, and it didn't work out for a ridiculous reason. Here's the explanation from Jackman:

"In the first "Spider-Man" -- Kevin Feige reminded me of this -- we really tried to get me to come on and do something, whether it was a gag or just to walk through the shot or something. The problem was, we couldn't find the suit. The suit was stuck in some thing. And so when they were in New York when I was there, we couldn't get it together. So, you know, I actually asked some high level people about it. Because the optimist in me goes, "Why not? Why can't we do it? You know, a split cast or whatever?" And someone reminded that the amount of money Fox paid compared to the amount of money Disney paid is very different [laughs]. So how you split that pie up? God knows. But in the comic books, what's great about it is they're just mashing together all the time -- and it's awesome. And people are like, "Yeah, well, let's get this one with that!" And, you know, I still think, one day, there may be an ability to do it."

I wonder what suit they wanted him to wear in the film? It weird to me that was the reason we never saw Wolverine in the film.

Do you think that Marvel and the other studios will ever combine characters? If so, who would you like to see meet up first? For me, it would be Hulk and Wolverine.

Fantastic Trailer for THE RAILWAY MAN with Firth and Kidman

0
0

I love a good war drama, and here's a trailer for a great-looking film based on a true story called The Railway Man, which stars Collin Firth and Nicole Kidman. It looks like there will be some pretty intense situations.

The film is based on Eric Lomax's autobiography, and Firth plays Lomax, "an engineer with a passion for trains who is captured by the Japanese during World War II and sent to work on the brutal Burma-Siam railroad where he was repeatedly tortured and interrogated."

I enjoy watching movies like this, so I'm looking forward to checking this one out. The movie is set to be released in the United Kingdom on January 3rd, 2014. There's no word on when it will be released in the States, but it's bound to get a U.S. distributor soon.

Hilarious And Strange Japanese Commercials Starring Tommy Lee Jones

Tommy Lee Jones: Astronaut, dog whisperer, and eye beam-shooting substitute teacher. These are a few of the many roles the famous actor has played as the official spokesman for BOSS Coffee. Dubbed "Alien Jones" in the commercials, the actor jumps from one job to the next with relatively no success at any job he tackles. The only thing that gets him through the day is his BOSS Coffee. Since 2006 Jones has done a total of 38 commercials for the brand, and we've found about 8 minutes worth of some of the most ridiculous ones! Literally every one is worth watching, especially the space one (starting at 4:55 in the first video) that has a remarkably similar plot to the upcoming film Gravity . Watch them all, you will not regret it.

BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN to Be Shot by WATCHMEN Cinematographer

0
0

It looks like cinematographer Larry Fong is teaming back up with Zack Snyder to shoot Batman Vs. Superman. Fong is the man behind films such as 300, Watchmen, Sucker Punch, and Super 8. His most recent film was Now You See Me. The guy is freakin' talented at what he does, and I'm sure he'll do great things with Batman Vs. Superman.

There's been no official announcement, but a Coming Soon reader saw the film listed on Fong’s agency resume.

The movie is currently being scripted by David S. Goyer from a story he developed with Snyder. Henry Cavill is set to reprise his role as Superman, and as you know, Ben Affleck will be taking on the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, and Diane Lane are also going to reprise their roles.

The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on July 17th, 2015, and production is expected to start in February of 2014!

Poster for DOCTOR WHO's 50th Anniversary Special "The Day of the Doctor"

The BBC has release the poster for Doctor Who's highly anticipated 50th Anniversary Special, "The Day of the Doctor." This is going to be quite an event, and I'm really excited to see what exactly is in store for us!

Matt Smith, David Tennant, Jenna Coleman, Billie Piper, and John Hurt are all set to be in the series. It's going to be the first time Tennant and Piper have appeared in the series since 2010. Smith had this to say in a statement,

“'The Day of the Doctor' is nearly here! Hope you all enjoy. There’s lots more coming your way, as the countdown to the 50th begins now.”

Writer and producer Steven Moffat added,

"50 years has turned Doctor Who from a television show into a cultural landmark. Personally I can't wait to see what it becomes after a hundred."
The series is set to premiere on Saturday, November 23rd, and I'm sure it will be amazing!

JURASSIC PARK 4 Release Date, Logo, and New Title

0

Universal Pictures has announced that the fourth installment of the Jurassic Park franchise, formerly titled Jurassic Park 4, has been retitled Jurassic World and will hit theaters June 12, 2015.  Along with the announcement, Universal also released the official logo above.

Safety Not Guaranteed director Colin Trevorrow will helm the action-adventure from a script he wrote with partner Derek Connolly. The film will be shot in 3D with Steven Spielberg, Frank Marshall, and Pat Crowley producing.

It's safe to say the difference between Jurassic Park and Jurassic World will be much like the difference between Disneyland and Disneyworld: One is bigger and more expensive, but either way your kids leave crying.

John Leguizamo to Play Pablo Escobar in KING OF COCAINE

0
0

John Leguizamo has landed one of the best roles of his career! He is set to play Medellin Cartel kingpin Pablo Escobar in a new biopic called King of Cocaine. According to Deadline, "Leguizamo got the job basically because he refused to take no for an answer." Apparently he feels he was born to play the role, and I think he might be right.

The movie is being directed by Brad Furman, who wanted the actor from the beginning. Producers kept telling him no, so the actor spent $15K of his own money "for a fat suit and prosthetic makeup that rendered him a dead ringer for Escobar at his prime," after Oscar Isaac dropped out of the film. Leguizamo and Furman ended up filming a screen test. They got it to the producer, who once again said no. According to the report, "Furman fought for it and got the producer to submit it to Relativity execs, without disclosing the identity of the actor. It not only showed him portraying Escobar, it even had a split screen comparison to the actual drug kingpin." They liked what they saw, asked who the actor was, and when they found out they decided to hire him.

I'm sure Leguizamo is going to be great in the role, and I have no doubt this is going to make for a solid movie. What do you think about the actor taking on the role of Escobar?
