Trailer For Benedict Cumberbatch's Wikileaks Film THE FIFTH ESTATE

0
0

Here's the first trailer for Bill Condon‘s The Fifth Estate, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch as Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. The film tells the story of the rise and fall of the controversial website. The movie also stars Stanley Tucci and Laura Linney, and it looks like it will be a great movie!

Triggering our age of high-stakes secrecy, explosive news leaks and the trafficking of classified information, WikiLeaks forever changed the game. Now, in a dramatic thriller based on real events, THE FIFTH ESTATE reveals the quest to expose the deceptions and corruptions of power that turned an Internet upstart into the 21st century’s most fiercely debated organization. The story begins as WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and his colleague Daniel Domscheit-Berg (Daniel Brühl) team up to become underground watchdogs of the privileged and powerful. On a shoestring, they create a platform that allows whistleblowers to anonymously leak covert data, shining a light on the dark recesses of government secrets and corporate crimes. Soon, they are breaking more hard news than the world’s most legendary media organizations combined. But when Assange and Berg gain access to the biggest trove of confidential intelligence documents in U.S. history, they battle each other and a defining question of our time: what are the costs of keeping secrets in a free society—and what are the costs of exposing them?”
“The Fifth Estate” is presented by DreamWorks Pictures and Reliance Entertainment in association with Participant Media and is produced by Steve Golin and Michael Sugar, with Bill Condon directing. The screenplay is by Josh Singer, based on the book “Inside WikiLeaks” by Daniel Domscheit-Berg and the Guardian book “WikiLeaks” by David Leigh and Luke Harding.

The film will be released in U.S. theaters on October 18th, 2013.

PORTAL 2: Gadget Gets a Portal Gun by Beffana

Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers deserves more love, especially Gadget (though I do have a soft spot for Monty too). Thanks to artist Beffana, we now know what it might look like if Gadget got her hands on a Portal gun, and the results are awesome. Little nods to the Portal franchise are everywhere, and her coloring and texture work, especially on Gadget herself, are stunning. You can catch some of her other work on her Deviant Art page

Is it just me, or would anyone else love to see a Rescue Rangers cartoon done in this art style?

THE WOLVERINE - Action-Packed Chinese TV Spot

Fox has released a new international Chinese trailer for The Wolverine that features a angry Hugh Jackman and few little bits of new footage.

The James Mangold-directed movie also stars Will Yun Lee, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Rila Fukushima, Tao Okamoto, and Brian Tee. It hits theaters on July 26th.

Based on the celebrated comic book arc, this epic action-adventure takes Wolverine, the most iconic character of the X-Men universe, to modern day Japan. Out of his depth in an unknown world he faces his ultimate nemesis in a life-or-death battle that will leave him forever changed. Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his physical and emotional limits, he confronts not only lethal samurai steel but also his inner struggle against his own immortality, emerging more powerful than we have ever seen him before.

Blacksmith Creates Real WOLVERINE Claws

Man At Arms is back. The blacksmith has created a pair of steel Wolverine claws, and they're freakin' deadly! The video takes us through the process of how the claws are made, and then they test them out!

In the movies it seems like it would be really hard to screw up Wolverine's claws, but the CG that was done for them in X-Men Origins: Wolverine was horrific. That was laziness at its best. I'm sure they'll look a lot better in the upcoming film.

Every week our master swordsmith and renowned propmaster, Tony Swatton, forges iconic weapons using high-speed belt grinders, scorching furnaces, and pounding power hammers. Then he takes his weapon to the streets to bust up some stuff.

Now watch Man At Arms building these bad boys!

GRAND THEFT OTTO - The Simpsons/GTA Mashup Art Series

Dan LuVisi has added more masterpieces to his collection of twisted takes on kid's shows and movies. His thugged out versions of Bert & Ernie, Drive-inspired Kermit, and disturbing reimagining of Mike Wazowski have all been hits with us and our readers. For his Grand Theft Auto-inspired take on The Simpsons, aptly titled Grant Theft Otto, LuVisi does some of his best and bloodiest work.

I just love the little details each piece has and how much they add to the stories the artist has created for these characters. From Lenny's Stonecutters tattoo to Otto's jacket pin, there are some cool nods in there if you look a little closer.

To read the background stories that LuVisi came up with for this series, head over to his Deviant Art page.

STAR WARS Vehicle Blueprint Dresses

Many people died to bring the Rebel Alliance the blueprints for the Death Star. You don't have to pay nearly as high a price for these Imperial vehicle blueprint dresses. After seeing these, I imagine the fashionista in Princess Leia is probably kicking herself for hiding those stylish blueprints in a stupid ol' droid. A lot of good that did!

These and other Star Wars and comic related designs are made to order by CakeShopCouture.

Lionsgate has released a couple more posters for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, featuring Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) and Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and more sporting their wetsuit uniforms for Panem's 75th annual Hunger Games with the third-ever Quarter Quell.

Every quarter century, The Capitol honors the anniversary of its victory over the Districts with a special edition of the Games. This year—for the first time in history—your favorite victors will return as tributes. As usual, all residents are required by Capitol law to watch the Games. Insubordination will not be tolerated.

I'm excited for the sequel, and it will be cool to see what they end up showing off at Comic-Con later this week! Make sure to check back for details! The movie is set to be released on November 22nd!

Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a "Victor's Tour' of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) - a competition that could change Panem forever.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Lenny Kravitz, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, Toby Jones, Woody Harrelson, Jena Malone, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amanda Plummer, Lynn Cohen, Patrick St. Esprit, Meta Golding, Bruno Gunn, Alan Ritchson, E. First Look at Sean Penn in THE GUNMAN

USA Today

USA Today

Sean Penn is the latest aged actor getting in on the old man action film bandwagon. This is our first look at him as a hitman who wants out of the game in the upcoming new thriller The Gunman. It also stars Javier Bardem, Idris Elba, and Ray Winstone. When talking about the film, Penn wouldn't really admit that he was making an action film,

"Here's the funny thing. Calling it an 'action film' is kind of like calling Meryl Streep a sexy blonde chick. She is. But that really doesn't tell the story of what she is at all.
"I don't separate this in my mind from anything else I have done. It's a very human story that deals with the same things exploited in action films, like warfare."

But it sounds like it's still an action thriller. Nothing he can say is going to change that. It's ok that you're making an action movie, Penn. I know you don't want to admit it, but just embrace it and enjoy it.

The film is an adaptation of Jean-Patrick Manchette's novel The Prone GunmanPierre Morel (Taken) is directing the movie from a script written by Peter Travis, who directed Dredd. Here's the story synopsis:

Martin Terrier is a hired killer who wants out of the game — so he can settle down and marry his childhood sweetheart. That's why he took up this profession! Martin returns to his hometown to claim her, but the Organization won't let him go. Once again, the gunman must assume the prone shooting position.

CHICKEN OR THE EGG - Offbeat Animated Comedy Short

Chicken or the Egg is a romantic animated comedy short where an egg addicted pig must battle between the desires of his heart and the desires of his belly when he falls in love with a chicken. The storytelling, style, and quality of animation are all wonderfully executed in this student film by Christine Kim and Elaine Wu.

Marvel Looking to Work with Aaron Eckhart

0
0

In case you're not familiar with the name, Aaron Eckhart is the actor who played Two-Face in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight. In a recent interview with Nuke The Fridge that actor was asked about the possibly of working with Nolan again and getting back into the comic book genre. While answering he revealed that Marvel would like to do something with him. Here's the quote,

"I would love to, Chris hasn't called. I know Marvel... we would like to do something together sometime."

Unfortunately, the interviewer didn't ask a follow-up question about what Marvel project he'd like to be involved with. He could be up for a number of characters, but who do you think would best suit his look and personality? He's definitely got the strong superhero jaw and chin look. It will be interesting to see if and how this eventually pans out. It doesn't sound like it will happen any time soon, though.

Giant Dragon Skull Washes Ashore to Promote GAME OF THRONES

Check out this 40-foot dragon skull that 'washed ashore' on Charmouth Beach in Dorset, England. The epic skull was created to promote the third season of Game of Thrones, which is now available on the UK-based television streaming service Blinkbox.

"The 40-foot skull is (obviously) a man-made sculpture designed by a team of three, taking over two months to construct. It was created by movies and TV streaming service Blinkbox, to celebrate the arrival of HBO's third season of Game of Thrones on its service on July 15th. "Game of Thrones is easily the most talked-about TV show of the moment," said Ben Ayers of Blinkbox. "We wanted to mark its arrival on Blinkbox with a spectacle every bit as dramatic as this amazing series."

Well, it looks really freakin' cool, and it's sure to draw a crowd... I want one.

A Gamer's Introspection: Stories, Fictions, and The Yawhg

0
0

I love stories. I read, I watch movies and TV shows, I listen to lyrical music, and I love playing story-driven video games. Don’t get me wrong, I do love mindless, plotless games as well, especially competitive shooters like Team Fortress 2, Counter Strike, and the occasional Call of Duty: Black Ops: Warfighter: Vietnam: Shootfest 13, but I would never list them as my favorite games because they are a temporary experience. You play them and enjoy them, but once you stop playing them, the fun stops, the memories fade, and you go back to doing whatever you were supposed to be doing with hardly a second thought. While I enjoy them, they are not my favorite games by any means. My favorite games, books, movies, or TV shows are the ones that your brain keeps going back to days or sometimes weeks later. This causes movies like V for Vendetta, Gladiator, and Shawshank Redemption to be some of my favorites and Pacific Rim, while enjoyable, to fade into the tangle of “Summer Blockbusters.”

Video games that are heavily story-driven seem hard to find nowadays. With blockbusters featuring engrossing stories like The Last of Us being few and far between, people wonder how I get my story kick from modern games. It really is not as hard as people think, you just have to look outside of the “Blockbuster” category. Japanese Roleplaying Games, or JRPGs, are famous for their attention to story. They are also famous for grinding and boring combat systems, and in my opinion, the people that believe this aren’t always wrong. Final Fantasy X has a great story that I got really involved in, but the combat did nothing but hold it back. I would grin and bear the long sections of grinding and boss fights just to get to the next nugget of story. This is unfortunate, because the story is great, but the game demands that you work for it. On the other hand, the Kingdom Hearts series has an action combat system to accompany the wonderful, if not incredibly confusing, story. The combination of fun play, decent progression, and a story that will entrap you if you allow it, makes the Kingdom Hearts games one of my favorite series. Other games that fall into this category are Persona 4, Riviera the Promised Land, and Ogre Battle 64.

I acknowledge that the Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts games are not for everyone. The stories, at times, can be VERY Japanese, and some people don’t like the style. There are games for those people too! A few years back I became very interested in Interactive Fiction games, to the point where I began writing my own. They are basically modern text-based adventure games, but with an emphasis on story. Most are fairly short, 4-5 hours of gameplay, but considering they are free and they have given me some of the best storytelling experiences in any media, they are definitely worth checking out. Without the burden of graphics and (usually) combat, IF authors are free to explore whatever storyline they wish. They aren’t held back by technical limitations, only the limit of their writing ability. Settings are varied and the good ones have far better atmosphere than many modern AAA titles, even without high-cost sky boxes and graphical landscapes. Check out Spider and Web or Blue Chairs for some really fun experiences. But let’s say you don’t like Japanese storylines, and don’t want to have to type everything you do. What then? Now it is time to dive into the world of indie games. Which brings me to The Yawhg.

What is The Yawhg, you ask? It is a 1-4 player completely story driven game. It is basically a very advanced IF game, with gorgeous illustrations. Each player controls a character living their lives for the few weeks leading up to a calamity. There are tons of events and options and is designed to be played over and over again. When I got my copy I sat down to play it with my wife. We finished the first game in around 30 minutes and after the credits rolled, we just sat there, silent for a few moments. And then we played it again, and again, and again. After playing for about 4 hours, trying to get the best ending, or getting the worst, exploring some of the many avenues the game offers, we called it quits for the night. The next day we took it to my parents’ house, sat them down in front of my laptop, and watched as they played it. I was surprised to see how many new events they found! Sure, quite of few were recycled, but because the game’s world is persistent for each playthrough, the decisions you make affect which options appear later on. They played it, and then we talked, they played again, and we talked some more. Two days later I received a text from them talking about it some more. And that is the mark of a truly powerful game. Days, even weeks, after I introduced The Yawhg to my family and friends, we still talk about it. Someone will have found a new ending, or discovered how two seemingly separate events actually can interact. Heck, when I am bored at my day job my brain sometimes wanders back to The Yawhg, to the puzzle we never solved, the favorite endings we saw, or the ones we may have missed.

If you are a story driven individual like myself, The Yawhg is a must play, especially if you think videogames aren’t your “thing.” If you enjoy that, I would highly recommend trying out some Interactive Fiction games. They have a competition every year called Xyzzy Awards, so you can use the winners of that as a guide to good IFs. If you are a gamer, give some of the games mentioned above a try, even if it is stepping out of your gaming comfort zone. It’s good for you and who knows? you might find a another world to learn and grow from. And that is never a bad thing.

ALIEN Cosplayer Goes for a Ride in the Park

I'm not sure what's creepier: the thought of finding an actual Xenomorph at the park, or the fact that these guys probably had to kick some poor kid off the horsey ride to get this shot. The pink collar is also quite disturbing. We're just lucky that they didn't try to go fully authentic and cover the suit in K-Y Jelly for that slimy look.

5 Reasons Why I'm Seeing Pacific Rim Again

0
0

Pacific Rim was hands down one of my favorite movies of the Summer (still battling in my head for the top spot against Man of Steel), and the first I will be seeing again in theaters. A fact I myself found shocking, having gone with a friend on a whim on a Sunday afternoon. We both loved it, and while I can't speak for him, I'm for sure getting tickets for a second showing, and here's why.

5. The Action  Was That Good.

You would think that after 3     Transformers films we'd have seen every possible choreographed scene you could have with a robot. For those of you thinking that, you're wrong. Every fight scene in this film is full to the brim with fresh action that always looks engaging and is never redundant. Literally every time there was a Kaiju/Jaeger throwdown on screen I was smiling and loving it. It wasn't your average, quick throw, you fly, and all the sudden I'm up on you combat. There were close quarters punches, headlocks, and for lack of a better term, brawling! This isn't to say the action at any point felt slow-moving or sluggish, but it felt like you were watching a giant robot fight a giant monster. They don't have to move fast to cover ground, they're already enormous. Throw in a plasma cannon and a sword??? Dude. It's a party.

4.  The Jaegers Look Like Actual Robots.

I couldn't help but feel a sense of wonder at human ingenuity (albeit fictional) in the first scene where we see all the Jaegers in base. Hundreds of crewmen scattered about welding, working, and tweaking the small features on these humongous robots to save humanity. It looks believable, and when the Jaegers jump into action it looks real. Gears spin and pistons pump as a punch is delivered and it gives me a different feeling than when I watched old episodes of Gundam. Unbelievable as the concept is, these look like robots we actually build. It's one of those little things that I wouldn't have even noticed unless they included it, and now that I've seen it it gives me a greater appreciation.

3. Style.

From countries' customized Jaeger designs to the gold plated shoes of Ron Perlman, this film has a distinct style that can't be denied. Lots of little things you may miss the first time around that I want to revisit. For example, the logo of Gypsy Danger screams that old school WWII-era design meets post apocalyptic Fallout that has really caught on here lately. The suits, the bomber jackets, the gold chains. This film has a real camp to it that makes it almost infectious! Speaking of camp...

2. Campiness

Most of the strong performances in this film came from the well-established actors who had minor side roles in the film. The rest? While it did leave a little something to be desired, if you can't beat em, join em. Most of the cheesy dialogue in this film is incredibly quote worthy...

"We should check the pulse."

"One, don't you ever touch me again. Two? Don't you ever touch me again."

"Today at the edge of our hope, at the end of our time. We have chosen to believe in each other. Today we face the monsters that are at our door, today we are cancelling the apocalypse."

Not to mention, you have guys with names like Hannibal Chau, Stacker Pentecost, and Yancy Beckit. It's not too early to call it, this film will be a sci-fi cult classic, if not an eventual major success. Given its great reception overseas, I'm inclined to say the latter which makes me want to go again in preparation for...

1. The Sequel.

We already interviewed the author of the novels and know that a trilogy is the intended plan for this, and I'm hyped to say the least. l definitely would like more of the same, but if I had to point out some things I'd personally love to see more countries' robots in action. New actors? Nah...it'd take away from the awesomeness of the first. The flaws in this film make it more enjoyable to be honest, and when you get down to it...most science fiction is pretty damn cheesy. So I'll be watching again (this time in 3D, which many of our writers attest to being "better than Avatar") and likely purchasing on Blu-Ray because this film really was that good, and you owe it to yourself as a geek to watch it.

Sam Raimi's OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL Is ARMY OF DARKNESS

I really enjoy the films that Sam Raimi makes, and Army of Darkness is one of my favorites. When I watched Oz The Great and Powerful, I never thought to compare it to Army of Darkness, but surprisingly, there are a lot of similarities between the two films. This video by YouTuber maddoxaom goes through and points out several of the almost shot-for-shot scenes. You can definitely see where Raimi got his inspiration. Oz is basically a family version of Army of Darkness. No wonder I liked Oz so much! Check out the video.

Felicity Jones Drops Spoiler Info for AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

It's been rumored for some time now that Felicity Jones would be playing Black Cat in Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Last month it was brought up in an interview and she basically stumbled through trying to answer and dodge the question at the same time. This led many to believe that this was an indication that she was actually playing the character. Well, thanks to the actress, we have more info pointing to the fact that she'll be playing Black Cat.

While doing an interview with View London (via Bleeding Cool), Jones went ahead and revealed some more spoiler-filled information saying,

"It’s all quite shrouded in secrecy, but I’m the Goblin’s girlfriend - I’m in a relationship with him, and his accomplice. I’m on the dark side."

That's some pretty solid details indicating the she will indeed play Black Cat. It's also confirmation that Dane DeHaan will take up the Green Goblin at some point in the franchise, which is a no brainer anyway, cause after all he is playing Harry Osborne. There's a strong possibility that the Spider-Man film franchise is headed into the Sinister Six storyline territory. When pressed for more details she said,

"It’s all in the vaults of Marvel. I love all that secrecy, I think it’s great. It builds anticipation, there’s too much transparency in everything these days."

I'm sorry to say that you're not really building any kind of mystery. In fact, your being pretty transparent about what you are saying. We know what's going on, but thanks for trying.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in theaters on May 2, 2014.

John Lithgow Joins Christopher Nolan's INTERSELLAR

John Lithgow is the latest actor to join the amazing cast of Christopher Nolan's Interstellar. The movie also stars Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, Anne Hathaway, Mackenzie Foy, Ellen Burstyn, Bill Irwin, Timothee Chalamet, and Casey Affleck. There's no word on who he'll be playing, but I'm sure he'll be great in it!

The movie is based on the scientific theories developed by Cal Tech physicist Kip Thorne, and the story follows a group of explorers who travel through a wormhole. It has also previously been described as "a heroic interstellar voyage to the furthest reaches of our scientific understanding." Here's a little more recently revealed info on the story...

It takes place "in a time where crops are dying, food is scarce, governments and nations have collapsed, NASA is gone and the 20th Century is to blame. A mysterious rip in Space Time opens up and it is up to the remnants of the now extinct NASA organization to explore it and offer up a chance at salvation for Earth."

Interstellar is set to be released on November 7th, 2014.
