Robert Downey Jr. to Play Pinocchio and Gepetto in His Adaptation

Robert Downey Jr. and director Ben Stiller are hard at work trying to bring a new live-action adaptation of  Carlo Collodi's Pinocchio to the big screen. The film project has passed through the hands of Tim Burton and Pushing Daisies creator Bryan Fuller, but it looks like Downey Jr. and Stiller will be the team to bring it to life.

This is a very different project for both of these talents, and when Downey Jr. was attached to the project we heard he was going to play Gepetto. Now new details on the film from Bleeding Cool say that the plan is to have the actor play Pinocchio as well.

I'm not sure how they plan on doing that because the actor said in a previous interview that he didn't want to have to resort to animation. The site goes on to say,

"It’s a younger Gepetto than you might expect – not really with any need for any ageing makeup. As for Pinocchio, I assumed that it might be a performance capture role, but that seems to be still up in the air. It could be just a voice role, if earlier plans to have Pinocchio’s physical form be an actual physical form still live on, and there was certainly a lot of discussion about how that might work."

It will be interesting to see the approach they take on bringing the wooden boy to life in their film, and how Downey will portray him. I'm sure whatever they end up doing will be great and that the actor can pull it off.

Hopefully they will deliver a sold adaptation. What do you think about the actor playing dual roles in the film?

Calvin & Hobbes Doc DEAR MR. WATTERSON Gets Distribution Deal!

I grew up on Calvin & Hobbes. I read that comic strip every chance I got, and I have all of the book collections. Just like several of my favorite movies from the '80s, this comic had a pretty big impact on my life. These are two of the most iconic characters ever created, and I loved them!

First time filmmaker Joel Allen Schroeder directed a documentary that he kickstarted called Dear Mr. Watterson. It chronicles the impact that the comic strip created by author and illustrator Bill Watterson had on the world. It features interviews with several famous illustrators, actors, and other fans, and the role these characters played in their lives. I'm happy to report that the doc will be distributed in the U.S. by Gravitas Ventures

The comic ran in syndication from 1985 to 1995 when Watterson ended its run on New Year’s Eve. Watterson has been extremely protective of his work, and has kept it away from potentially lucrative licensing deals, because he knows Hollywood will screw it up.

The doc premiered at the Cleveland International Film Festival in Watterson’s home base of Cleveland, Ohio, and it will hit theaters and VOD on November 15th. I've included the trailer for the doc below.

MAN OF STEEL - How It Should Have Ended

"The solution to stopping Zod isn't just a "snap"... it's also a cinch."

The team over at How It Should Have Ended got around to giving us their alternate ending to Zack Snyder's Man of Steel.  It may not be as funny as some of the other movie endings they've done, but it definitely makes more sense than what was done in the film. At the same time, it would have bypassed all of the action that caused lots of death and destruction. Check out the video and let us know what you think of the new ending!

Here's another entertaining DC Nation animated short from Cartoon Network called "Animal Man." This is one of the funnier ones I've seen. THE CONJURING Sequel Moving Into Development

James Wan's horror film The Conjuring comes out later this week, but the reviews for it have started to roll out, and they've been extremely positive. It seems like this horror movie is going to be even better than it looks, and it already looks pretty freakin' terrifying!

New Line Cinema is already developing a sequel to the film which is based on a true story about a haunted house that is terrorizing a family. It takes place in Rhode Island in 1971, and follows real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren — portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga -- as they investigate the house.

New Line president Toby Emmerich told Variety that they are currently exploring ways to turn this into a franchise based on the Warrens’ paranormal investigations. He says,

“This is as good a horror movie as we’ve ever made…. We think it will have great playability. We have Lorraine’s permission and support, and we are working on developing another film."

The Amityville Horror and The Haunting in Connecticut are both films based on the Warrens' investigations, but I'm sure there are a lot more interesting stories that they could pull from. Apparently though, The Conjuring is the most terrifying experience they had, so any sequels might not be as scary.

I can't wait to see The Conjuring for myself! I love horror movies, and this one is apparently supposed to be one of the best.

Neill Blomkamp Talks CHAPPIE and DISTRICT 10

Ever since Neill Blomkamp released District 9, fans have been patiently waiting for the sequel, District 10. Blompkamp is currently finishing and promoting his next film project, Elysium, and after that he's moving on to his sci-fi comedy Chappie.

When talking about Chappie with Wired, the director says, it's about sentience: “If something is as smart as you, do you treat it differently if it isn’t a human?” He goes on to describe the script as "laugh-out-loud funny but also emotional." Then adds, “It’s fairly touching, buy, you know, fraught with gunfire.”

Maybe when he's finished with that one he'll get around to doing District 10, which he said exists as an 18-page story treatment. He doesn't give any details on the story, but he did say that it is “really fucking cool.” Here comes the bad news though, Blomkamp says he's not prepared to commit to the sequel, meaning its future is even more uncertain than it was previously.

Blomkamp also revealed that he turned down the possibility of working on a new Star Wars project so he could make original films.

This guy is a very talented director, and he will have a long career of bringing us original and awesome films!

Tom Hanks and Ron Howard Will Be Back for Dan Brown's INFERNO

The adventures of Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon will continue on the big screen with a feature film adaptation of Dan Brown's most recent novel Inferno. Sony Pictures has decided to skip the third book, The Lost Symbol, and make this one first. They'll eventually get around to making the latter though. It's also been confirmed that Tom Hanks will be back to star, and Ron Howard is coming back to direct!

They set the release date for December 18th, 2015, and David Koepp is adapting the screenplay. I enjoyed the first two movies, although they aren't the best work from Howard or Hanks. The books have always been better, and I suspect these other films will turn out the same way.

Here's the official description of the book:

In the heart of Italy, Harvard professor of symbology Robert Langdon is drawn into a harrowing world centered on one of history’s most enduring and mysterious literary masterpieces... Dante’s Inferno.
Against this backdrop, Langdon battles a chilling adversary and grapples with an ingenious riddle that pulls him into a landscape of classic art, secret passageways, and futuristic science. Drawing from Dante’s dark epic poem, Langdon races to find answers and decide whom to trust... before the world is irrevocably altered.

Are you excited that Hanks and Howard are teaming back up to adapt this book into a movie?

I seriously hope that The Wolverine ends up being a far superior film, because if they screw it up I'm going to be pissed!

"The Wolverine" is coming out next weekend, and while it looks better than Wolverine: Origins, so do most types of skin rash. We revisit the massive letdown that ruined the most badass member of the X-Men.

MOVIE BLOG MOVIE - GeekTyrant's First Feature Length Documentary

$

A movie blog making a documentary movie called Movie Blog Movie, about other people who run movie blogs, which cover movies made by people who read movie blogs. It's like we are making the Inception of documentaries.

So why make such a meta-layered movie? The answer is that we are fans of our colleagues, and we want to know more about them. Things like how they named their site, what inspired them to start, and what keeps them writing.

Right now most of us know very little about the people who influence us, guide us, and share cool stuff with us. We want to learn more about their influences, experiences, and opinions. How did they gather their teams and why did they get into this business? If these stories are not documented, they will just fade away.

We plan to keep Movie Blog Movie focused on the first generation of sites founded between 1995-2005 and will be documenting them in the style of Indie Game: The Movie, Pumping Iron, and Side by Side, using a combination of talking heads, a day in the life, and biographical stories.

We already have key people committed and hope to bring on many more, which is why we are announcing the project now. Because we start filming tomorrow at San Diego Comic-Con.

Epic Concept Art for GODZILLA!

Check out this epic piece of concept art for Gareth Edwards' Godzilla that gives us a taste of how big this movie will be. I know a lot of people are going to compare this to Pacific Rim, but Godzilla is its own beast, and a classic franchise. I loved Pacific Rim, and I think that Godzilla is also going to be just as fun and entertaining.

The illustration comes from the "Godzilla Encounter" app that Legendary Pictures launched this week. Make sure to click on the piece to see it in all its glory.

An epic rebirth to Toho’s iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.

The movie stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn, Bryan Cranston, and Sally Hawkins. The movie hits theaters on May 16th, 2014.

The Comic-Con panel takes place on Saturday, July 20th, in Hall H from 10:45AM – 1:15PM. They are going to show off some epic footage!

The LEGO Group today announced that it will produce a collection of movie-inspired building sets celebrating the brand's premiere as a theatrical film. The company has recruited an impressive roster of global partners to a broad, multi-category licensing program to support the much anticipated animated adventure film from Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and produced by Dan Lin and Roy Lee, "THE LEGO® MOVIE" is rapidly building buzz following its first released trailer and assembles on the big screen starting in February 2014.
"The LEGO brand has been a vehicle for creative storytelling around the world for decades, so it's no surprise that there is such growing enthusiasm for the first LEGO theatrical film," said Jill Wilfert, vice president licensing and entertainment for The LEGO Group. "We are thrilled to collaborate with our valued partners to build a varied and compelling portfolio of products through which fans of all ages can celebrate this LEGO brand milestone."
Building Sets
Inspired by pivotal scenes in the film and starring key LEGO minifigure characters, a collection of 17 LEGO building sets will deliver all of the "THE LEGO MOVIE" action to the playroom. Fans will delight in highly detailed and functional vehicles and structures that reflect the creative versatility of the movie's many LEGO themed backdrops, such as City, Wild West, and Space. Comic-Con International attendees in San Diego, California will see the first "THE LEGO MOVIE" building set unveiled at the LEGO booth (#2829) on Saturday, July 20.

"THE LEGO MOVIE" stars Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Nick Offerman, Alison Brie and Charlie Day, with Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman, as the voices of the animated characters. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS "Myths Revealed" Featurette

Here's a new featurette for the adventure fantasy film Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. It gives us some more new footage from the film along with interview from the cast and crew. In this sequel, Percy Jackson journeys into the Bermuda triangle in search for the golden fleece. I didn't really care for how the first movie turned out, but this looks like it could be better.

The Thor Freudenthal-directed film stars Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario, Brandon T. Jackson, Alexandra Daddario, Douglas Smith, Mary Birdsong, Yvette Nicole Brown, Missi Pyle, Nathan Fillion, Anthony Head, Paloma Kwiatkowski, Leven Rambin, Stanley Tucci, Robert Maillet, and Zoe Aggeliki.

Percy Jackson has had an unnervingly quiet school year. But then he discovers that the magical borders protecting Half Blood Hill are failing. Unless something is done, the camp will be attacked by demons and monsters. The only way to restore power to the camp's borders and to save their home is to find the mythical Golden Fleece. And the only who can undertake this dangerous quest are Percy and his friends. Embarking on a treacherous odyssey into the uncharted waters of the Sea of Monsters (known to humans as the Bermuda Triangle), they battle terrifying creatures, an army of zombies, and the ultimate Evil.

The fantasy adventure film comes out on August 7th.

First Close Up Look at GODZILLA's Face

Legendary Pictures set up a crazy cool promo event at Comic-Con for their upcoming remake of Godzilla. I'm going to get to go through it tomorrow, so I don't know what it is yet. I do know, though, that they have transformed a section of Downtown San Diego into a Tokyo street that includes underground decontamination bunkers and abandoned skyscrapers looking out over a destroyed city.

Apparently at the end of the little adventure they take you on they give a first look at the giant lizard. Well, that image of Godzilla has been released online, and it gives you your first close-up look of Godzilla's face. It ended up having a much more classic design than I expected. It's more reminiscent of the 1984 and 1989 designs.

The image comes from Deadline, who explains that the shot is not from a scene in the film, but "you do get an up close and personal look at the monster as he almost sticks his head though the window-like screen." I can't wait to see this awesomeness for myself!

Agents Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge).

The show will have a panel at Comic-Con on Friday, July 19 that will feature executive producer Joss Whedon and Marvel's Head of Television and series executive producer Jeph Loeb. Sylvester Stallone Confirms Mel Gibson for EXPENDABLES 3?

$

It looks like Sylvester Stallone has confirmed that Mel Gibson will indeed play the villain in The Expendables 3. You just have to read between the lines of a brief tweet he sent that simply says,

"Mad Max vs Barney Ross...."

Gibson's involvement with the project has been rumored for some time. At first it looked like he might direct the movie, but then another rumor hit saying that he would be playing the villain. So the fact that Stallone tweeted that out tells me that it's basically official, otherwise why would he tweet it?

I was hoping that this bit of casting news would turn out to be true. This would be a great project for Gibson to be a part of, and I'm sure he'll make an awesome villain. I enjoyed the first two Expendables movies, and I'm looking forward to the third!
