Josh Brolin Joins Paul Thomas Anderson's INHERENT VICE

0
0

Josh Brolin is the latest actor to join the already fantastic cast for Paul Thomas Anderson's next film project, Inherent Vice. The rest of the cast includes Joaquin Phoenix, Owen WilsonBenicio Del Toro, Reese Witherspoon, Jena Malone, and Martin Short. Brolin's Gangster Squad and Milk co-star Sean Penn is also in talks to join the project. I love Anderson's directing work, and this is looks like it will shape up to be a fantastic film.

The story is set in Los Angeles in 1970, and it follows a pot-smoking private detective named Doc Sportello (Phoenix) as he investigates the case of a kidnapped girl. Del Toro would play "an attorney who's always trying to help the protagonist out of trouble, though he's not an actual criminal lawyer." Witherspoon, who starred with Phoenix in Walk The Line, could end up playing the character of Shasta Fay Hepworth. Malone will play "a former drug addict who asks Sportello for help." Short's part isn't specified, but it's minor. There's no information on who Brolin will be playing in the movie, but he's definitely a great addition.

The movie is an adaptation of the book written by Thomas Pynchon. Here's a description of the book:

Part noir, part psychedelic romp... private eye Doc Sportello comes, occasionally, out of a marijuana haze to watch the end of an era as free love slips away and paranoia creeps in with the L.A. fog... It’s been awhile since Doc Sportello has seen his ex-girlfriend. Suddenly out of nowhere she shows up with a story about a plot to kidnap a billionaire land developer whom she just happens to be in love with. Easy for her to say. It’s the tail end of the psychedelic sixties in L.A., and Doc knows that “love” is another of those words going around at the moment, like “trip” or “groovy,” except that this one usually leads to trouble. Despite which he soon finds himself drawn into a bizarre tangle of motives and passions whose cast of characters includes surfers, hustlers, dopers and rockers, a murderous loan shark, a tenor sax player working undercover, an ex-con with a swastika tattoo and a fondness for Ethel Merman, and a mysterious entity known as the Golden Fang, which may only be a tax dodge set up by some dentists.

Fun New Trailer for Disney's PLANES

0
0

Disney has released a new trailer for their Cars spin-off film, Planes, which I personally think looks better than Cars. I think it will be a fun movie, and I'm sure it will do well with the kids.

Dane Cook stars in the movie as a lead character Dusty, with Julia Louis-DreyfusTeri Hatcher, and John Cleese filling in some voices as well. Planes also includes a Top Gun reunion for Val Kilmer and Anthony Edwards. Then there's Brad Garrett, Stacy Keach, Colin CowherdCedric the EntertainerGabriel IglesiasCarlos AlazraquiPriyanka Chopra, and Sinbad.

The movie will be released on August 9th, 2013

From high above the world of “Cars,” flies “Planes,” Disney’s upcoming animated action-packed comedic adventure starring Dusty, a big-hearted, fast-flying crop duster who dreams of competing in the most exhilarating around-the-world air race in history. There’s only a couple of not-so-small problems – Dusty is not exactly built for racing and he also happens to be afraid of heights.

Despite his fear and with encouragement from his mentor, a naval aviator named Skipper, Dusty narrowly qualifies for the big competition. Dusty’s sportsmanship and speed begin to rattle the defending champ of the race circuit, Ripslinger, who will stop at nothing to see Dusty fail.

When disaster strikes during the climax of the final race, Dusty’s courage is put to the ultimate test. With the support of friends old and new, Dusty reaches heights he never dreamed possible and in the process, gives a spellbound world the inspiration to soar.

Hugh Jackman Is Excited for X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

Fan Image by Wobbly (via Flicksandbits)

Hugh Jackman will be back as the Wolverine in Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past, and he seems very excited about it. He basically went straight from The Wolverine to working on the next installment of the movie. Jackman recently talked to Empire Magazine and discussed the film saying that it, "will be, for X-Men, like The Avengers."

When Jackman first found out the film was being done he thought he would just have a cameo part in the film, but as you all know it ended up being a lot bigger than that.

I was like, 'Okay, this is a slam-dunk idea. This, actually, is phenomenal. I think this will be, for X-Men, like The Avengers.' And I think it is...

I was a little frustrated because I was nearing the end of a 12-to-18 month physical odyssey and getting ready to have Christmas off - and lasagnas. And I'm, unfortunately, not as young as I was, so I have to start earlier and go for longer. So I was like, Okay, we gotta keep going.' But I'm really excited about it, and I never thought in a million years I would play one character in seven movies.

I didn't think Jackman would go this long either, but I'm happy it worked out that way. It's hard to imagine anyone else playing this role. I'm looking forward to seeing how this movie comes together. I really hope Singer is able to pull it off; it's been awhile since he has made a decent movie.

Joel McHale Will Play a Tough Cop in BEWARE THE NIGHT

0
0

Community star Joel McHale is set to join Eric Bana and Olivia Munn in a supernatural thriller called Beware the Night. The Screen Gems production is being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, and directed by Scott Derrickson (Sinister).

Bana plays an Irish Catholic cop who is "working a case when he meets a renegade priest. Despite the cop’s beliefs, he’s convinced by the priest that there is a demonic element, and together they work to solve the case and combat the paranormal forces working against them." He finds himself being targeted by the Devil in the form of possessed soldier.

I've had that same problem. Damn Devil is always trying to take me down. I figured my best chance of survival would be to lock myself in my home and write about movies all day.

McHale will play Bana’s partner in the story, who's an "experienced and tough cop." I've noticed McHale has been wanting to move away from comedy and expand his abilities as an actor. This is definitely a different role for him.

PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS - New Full Trailer

Percy Jackson heads into the Bermuda triangle in search for the golden fleece in the next chapter of his epic magical story. I didn't really like the first movie, but my kids freakin' loved it, so of course they're excited for the sequel. Thankfully, it looks like Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters might be better than the first film. 20th Century Fox has released a second full trailer for the movie, and it's packed with new footage.

Percy Jackson has had an unnervingly quiet school year. But then he discovers that the magical borders protecting Half Blood Hill are failing. Unless something is done, the camp will be attacked by demons and monsters. The only way to restore power to the camp's borders and to save their home is to find the mythical Golden Fleece. And the only who can undertake this dangerous quest are Percy and his friends. Embarking on a treacherous odyssey into the uncharted waters of the Sea of Monsters (known to humans as the Bermuda Triangle), they battle terrifying creatures, an army of zombies, and the ultimate Evil.

The Thor Freudenthal-directed sequel stars Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario, Brandon T. Jackson, Alexandra Daddario, Douglas Smith, Mary Birdsong, Yvette Nicole Brown, Missi Pyle, Nathan Fillion, Anthony Head, Paloma Kwiatkowski, Leven Rambin, Stanley Tucci, Robert Maillet and Zoe Aggeliki.

The fantasy adventure film comes out on August 7th. Check out the trailer and let us know if you're excited for this sequel.

Joss Whedon’s Inspirational Wesleyan University Commencement Speech

I don't know about you, but I enjoy listening to Joss Whedon talk about stuff. The guy has a way with words. He was recently invited back to Wesleyan University, from which he graduated in 1987. He received an honorary doctorate, and also had the privilege of offering the commencement address for the Class of 2013.

He starts the speech off with telling the hopeful, bright-eyed graduates that, "you are all going to die." He may have started in a dark place but by the end of the speech he brings everyone into the light. It's a very inspirational and entertaining speech, and if you're a fan of Whedon's style, film/TV work, and sense of humor, then you're going to enjoy this.

I've included a video of the speech below, and Whedon comes in around the 2:30 mark. Sometimes it's hard to hear due to the wind, but Wesleyan has the full transcript available on their website. Below the video I've included one of my favorite parts from the speech. I think you'll like Whedon even more after listening to this.

 Here's a couple excerpts that I enjoyed:

Let’s just say, hypothetically, that two roads diverged in the woods and you took the path less traveled. Part of you is just going, “Look at that path! Over there, it’s much better. Everyone is traveling on it. It’s paved, and there’s like a Starbucks every 40 yards. This is wrong. In this one, there’s nettles and Robert Frost’s body—somebody should have moved that—it just feels weird. And not only does your mind tell you this, it is on that other path, it is behaving as though it is on that path. It is doing the opposite of what you are doing. And for your entire life, you will be doing, on some level, the opposite—not only of what you were doing—but of what you think you are. That is just going to go on. What you do with all your heart, you will do the opposite of. And what you need to do is to honor that, to understand it, to unearth it, to listen to this other voice.

You have, which is a rare thing, that ability and the responsibility to listen to the dissent in yourself, to at least give it the floor, because it is the key—not only to consciousness-but to real growth. To accept duality is to earn identity. And identity is something that you are constantly earning. It is not just who you are. It is a process that you must be active in. It’s not just parroting your parents or the thoughts of your learned teachers. It is now more than ever about understanding yourself so you can become yourself.

I talk about this contradiction, and this tension, there’s two things I want to say about it. One, it never goes away. And if you think that achieving something, if you think that solving something, if you think a career or a relationship will quiet that voice, it will not. If you think that happiness means total peace, you will never be happy. Peace comes from the acceptance of the part of you that can never be at peace. It will always be in conflict. If you accept that, everything gets a lot better.

He concluded with the following,

Don’t just live. Be that other thing connected to death. Be life. Live all of your life. Understand it, see it, appreciate it. And have fun.

Amen!

LEPRECHAUN Horror Reboot Finds a Director

0
0

Lionsgate and WWE Studios have hired Zach Lipovsky to direct their upcoming remake of the absurd horror film LeprechaunThe Wrap points out that Lipovsky was discovered as a contestant on the Steven Spielberg reality series On the Lot, which centered on 16 aspiring filmmakers competing for a development deal with DreamWorks. Since then he's made some short films and directed some TV movies.

WWE's Dylan "Hornswoggle" Postl will play the Leprechaun, who was previously played by Warwick Davis in the 1993 original, which also launched Jennifer Aniston's career.

The original film was kind of a horror comedy that, followed an evil, sadistic leprechaun searching for his pot of gold while avoiding four-leaf clovers and killing people along the way. The script for the remake was written by Harris Wilkinson. There are no new details on it, but they plan on taking it in a new direction. It was previously reported that the movie would be a darker, more traditional horror film.

I enjoyed the ridiculousness of the original film, but it's really hard to imagine it as a traditional horror movie. Maybe the more serious they try to make it, the funnier it will be.

THE FLINTSTONES Movie has a WWE All-Star Voice Cast

0
0

Warner Bros. Pictures is teaming up with WWE Studios to bring us a new animated big screen adaptation of The Flintstones. The film will be based on the classic 1960s animated series from Hanna-Barbera that included characters such as Fred and Barney.

The film will also have an all-star WWE voice cast that includes "Vince McMagma (voiced by Vince McMahon), and such WWE Superstars and Divas including John Cenastone (John Cena) and CM Punkrock (CM Punk)."

The plan is to release the film in early 2015. It's been a long time since I've watched an episode of The Flintstones, but I remember watching it all the time when I was kid. It was a great show! Every attempt since then to reboot the series or turn it into a film has failed miserably. I imagine that this won't end up being much better.

Michael Luisi, President, WWE Studios had this to say in a statement,

WWE is family-friendly entertainment, so partnering with Warner Bros. on a Flintstones/WWE project was a natural extension of our Scooby Doo deal. This new, animated feature allows us to showcase our brand with young fans and loyal Flintstones enthusiasts alike.

What do you all think about the WWE producing a Flintstones movie? Do you think it will be any good?

How Would You Feel About Shorter Movie Trailers?

0
0

Right now the average length of a movie trailer is 2.5 minutes. That's the limit set by the MPAA, but every year each studio gets one exception, which is why you might see a longer trailer every once in awhile.

I've started noticing people complaining about trailers. Not necessarily because of the length, but because of the spoilerish content that the studios fill them with, putting scenes in the trailers that never end up being in the film, and the number of trailers shown before a movie. The National Association of Theater Owners, are hearing these complaints, and they are pushing for shorter trailers. They want to cut the standard trailer down to 2-minutes.

I personally love watching movie trailers. I like to get to the theater on time to make sure I get to see the trailers on the big screen. I hate missing them! I'm not a complainer of most trailers. The only time that trailers really bug me is when they are poorly cut or they give away the whole damn story.

I honestly don't think cutting down a trailer to 2-minutes is going to make much of an impact. It will just allow for the studios to fit even more trailers into theaters, and it's not going to stop the studios from cutting the trailers they want. If they want to throw in a spoiler scene, give away the whole story, or put in scenes that won't be in the movie, they still have 2-minutes to do it.

I'm not going to complain if they do end up cutting the length of the trailers down. I'm not going to complain if they don't. I'm still going to complain though if it's a poorly cut trailer, or if it gives away way too much information. Lets face it--the people that are complaining about movie trailers now will never stop complaining. One thing I've learned in life is that people like to complain about the things they like to complain about.

So, how would you feel about studios cutting shorter movie trailers? If you don't like the way trailers are being cut these days, do you think cutting them down to 2-minutes will make a difference?

Cool Sci-fi Short Thriller - SILICON;BOOTDRIVE

0

I've come across a new live-action sci-fi short film for you to check out. It's called Silicon;BootDrive, it was directed by A.T., and here's a short description:

It’s the year 2015.

A meteor collided with the Earth and changed human race.

“How were we created? Why do we live? And where are we headed? I wanted to know. And that’s why I’m here. ~David Craws~”

I enjoyed the short, it had some nice shots, most of the special effects were pretty decent, and the creature designs were cool. The acting isn't really that great though. It's a little rough around the edges, but in the end, I saw it for what it was and could be, and I was entertained. Check it out for yourself.

These are also so far in advance that most of them will likely change as they get closer to actually finishing the films.  The one thing I did notice is that 2017 should be the first time Pixar will release two movies in the same year.

We'll fill you in on more information for these film as soon as that info becomes available.

INSIDIOUS CHAPTER 2 - New Photos and Information

0
0

I'm a big fan of director James Wan's horror films. He's got a great style of telling creepy-ass stories without using blood and carnage to scare people. Wan is one of those guys that like to mess with people's heads, and I like that. Stories that mess with your head make the best horror films. I loved what he did with Insidious, and I'm excited to see what he ends up giving us in Insidious Chapter 2.

Thanks to STYD, we have some new photos to share with you from the film along with some more details revealed by the cast and crew. Obviously this sequel continues the story from the first film, but at the same time it also delves into the past a little bit more. When asked about that aspect of the film this is what was said,

Leigh Whannell:  Yeah, well, with the first film there was this single driving thing they were trying to fix.  This film is bigger than that.

Lin Shaye: It's a bit of a murder mystery as well, which I thought was a wonderful addition to the story.  In addition to being supernatural, it's also trying to solve this crime.

Patrick Wilson:  Because we established the rules and you have to assume not everyone has seen the first one, you've got those little nods of like this is where we go, and this is what happens, because we had done all of that...  Selfishly, for me, it was exciting because at the end [of the first one, my character] either gets cured or he's fighting his way back.  Clearly, there's a duality of "what happens to the Josh here."  It feels like an adult drama gone wrong with a supernatural element.  Even moreso here because of the presence of Barbara a bit more, it's not just a clashing of the husband and wife, but of the son and the mother.  It's exciting to play and explore.  With the two movies Leigh has written, we get the language and world we're in.

Makes sure to head on over to STYD to read the full interview, there are a few interesting tidbits of information that you might find interesting. They've introduced us to a very interesting and creepy world in this movie, and it will be cool to explore it more.

Realistic VOLTRON Character Art

Here's a great set of Voltron fan art created by artist Josh Burns. They give us a more realistic look at the heroes and villains from the classic 1980s animated series. This was one of my favorite shows growing up, and when someone finally ends up making the movie, I hope it turns out as awesome as it should be. The illustrations of Princess Allura above and Pidge below are by far the best ones out of the set.

Viggo Mortensen's Reason for Turning Down THE HOBBIT

0
0

I'm not sure how this would have worked, but Viggo Mortensen was asked if he'd be interested in coming back to reprise his role as Aragorn in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit. Apparently Mortenson didn't see how it made sense either, so he declined. Here's what he had to say in a recent interview with The Guardian when they asked him if he was approached to be in the new movies,

Before they started shooting, back in 2008, one of the producers did ask if I would be interested. I said, 'You do know, don't you, that Aragorn isn't in The Hobbit? That there is a 60-year gap between the books?'

I'm interested in seeing that world again, and seeing what Peter Jackson's done, how he's made use of the improvements in special effects and cameras and the different way of shooting, which will probably enhance the visual aspect of the experience, the sound also. And I'm interested in seeing how he's managed to make three movies out of a relatively slim volume…Jackson is a clever person – I'm sure he'll have done something really interesting with it.

He also revealed that he has yet to see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Mortensen has previously said that he'd consider returning to Middle Earth if they told the right story where his character fit it, but that will never happen. Jackson has said that these Hobbit movies are the last Middle Earth films that we'll see. It's kind of sad, because there's still so much story out there to tell.

Netflix Wants Another Season of ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT

0
0

I don't know about you, but I loved Arrested Development season 4! It was a little weird at first, but the more episodes I watched the funnier it got. When it ended I wanted to see more! Arrested Development creator Mitchell Hurwitz has said that season 4 would be the last we saw of these characters. It was supposed to possibly lead to a movie or another season. Personally I'd like to see a fifth season, and apparently so does Netflix.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings explains in an interview with CNBC that they were only contracted to do one season, but he'd love to buy a fifth if the cast was all willing to return again.

Arrested is unique, because [whether or not it comes back is] really up to the talent. If the talent were willing to do more, and interested in that, I’m sure we would be willing.

So basically if we don't see another season we can blame the actors. Hopefully at some point they would be willing to do it again. It'd be great to see the adventure of these characters continue. Hasting goes on to say that “it’s been huge, just as we had hoped,” and then explains why Netflix isn't going to release the numbers anytime soon.

The reason we’re not doing ratings is because we really want to focus over the first year Netflix is about being able to watch when you want, not having to watch at a certain time like linear TV is. So we’re really not focused on the Day One ratings, it’s really over the first year.

That's interesting, especially since it's being reported that the show was illegally downloaded 100,000 time over the weekend. But 100,000 out of a few million still doesn't seem that bad. If they are willing to make a fifth season though, then the number they have must have been pretty good.

Would you rather see an Arrested Development movie or a fifth season?
