Kon-Tiki Directors to Take on PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5

0
0

Kon-Tiki directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg have officially landed the gig helming Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean 5. First of all I've seen Kon-Tiki, and it's easily one of my favorite films ever made. If you haven't seen it, you have to! I think that these directors are too good for the Pirates franchise, but I realize they need and want to make a living making movies, and I know that they'll do an incredible job with it. They have it in them to make this fifth Pirates film the best in the franchise.

According to the report, Johnny Depp and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have signed off on the choice, and the studio is now in negotiations. The deal should close soon, and they are looking to start production late this year or early next.

The two directors were on the top of Disney's list to develop this movie, so it must be nice for both parties that it's working out. After seeing Kon-Tiki, I was really rooting for these guys to make it in this crazy entertainment industry. Pirates is a huge franchise, and it will serve as a stepping stone that will take them to bigger and better things.

Now that Pirates 5 has a couple of amazingly talented directors, I'm actually excited for it. I never thought I'd be excited about a Pirates film again, but this did it. What do you all think about the directing choice?

Glenn Close Joining GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

Here's a bit of surprising and cool casting news. Glenn Close is going to be joining James Gunn's Marvel sci-fi space adventure Guardians of the Galaxy! According to the report she will be taking on a major part in the film. Her character wasn't revealed but she is an a leadership position with Nova Corp, the intergalactic space patrol.

Close is an amazing actress, and I'm just as surprised by this news as I was when Robert Redford joined Captain America: Winter Soldier. It's pretty cool to see these legendary actors taking on roles in movies like this.

It was previously rumored that John C. Reilly was up for a role in the movie as well. The character he would be playing is an Agent Coulson type character in the "Guardians" universe. It's been described as a "human agent who serves as a go-between, keeping the Guardians in line and reporting to SHIELD about their activities."

There's no confirmation of his casting other than Deadline mentioning Reilly's name in passing as an actor that's already been cast. But the site also describes Close's character as being "the closest thing to the one that Samuel L. Jackson plays in Marvel’s Avengers movie." That sounds a lot like the role Reilly's character was up for. So who knows what's going on, but it definitely sounds like Close is going to be in the movie regardless. There's a little confusion, but I'm sure it will be cleared up in the near future.

The film starts production in a month, and the rest of the cast includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Lee Pace, and Michael Rooker. I'm sure more names will be coming soon. I can't wait to see who they end up getting to play Rocket Raccoon.

Preview of Every Track from the MAN OF STEEL Soundtrack

Warner Bros. Water Tower Music has released a preview of every track from Han Zimmer's Man of Steel Soundtrack. We get a 90 second taste of each song, and I've got to say they all sound pretty amazing. Zimmer did an incredible job! It has that epic feel that Superman needs, and it should prove to be awe-inspiring when we hear this music while watching the awesome visuals of the film on the big screen.

The soundtrack will be available for purchase on June 11th in two editions. There's the regular version with 18 tracks and a deluxe edition that includes six additional tracks.

Man of Steel comes out on June 14th. We're so close!

DreamWorks Animation's TROLLS Lands a Director

0
0

DreamWorks Animation has announced that their big screen adaptation of Trolls will be directed by Mike Mitchell. Who's that guy you ask? Well, he's currently directing the live action sequences in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie 2 and has also directed Shrek Forever After, Sky High, and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. It's not the greatest resume of films, but this is a movie about those Troll dolls, so I guess it doesn't really matter. I don't imagine it will be any better than any of the previous films he's worked on.

The film is currently being scripted by Emmy Award-winning writer Erica Rivinoja, who has worked on comedies such as South Park and Up All Night. The movie will be a grand scale musical comedy that centers on how the Trolls came into their vibrant and colorful hair. Chief Creative Officer Bill Damaschke had this to say in a statement:

Mike and Erica are the perfect team to reimagine this film. Mike's pedigree in shaping stories with already beloved characters is second to none, and Erica's amazing sense of comedy will introduce the Trolls to a new generation of fans while keeping the spirit and appeal audiences have loved for years.

The movie is set to be released on November 4th, 2016, so we've got a long way to go. I've never been a fan of those Troll toys, so I don't care how the movie turns out. I already know I'm probably not going to end up seeing it unless my kids force me.

RED Director to Take on Disney's Coast Guard Film THE FINEST HOURS

0
0

R.I.P.D. director Robert Schwentke is in talks with Disney to direct their fantastic sounding Coast Guard movie The Finest Hours. Last year, Tim Van Patten, director of HBO series such as Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, The Wire, Deadwood, Rome and The Sopranos, was attached to direct the movie. I guess that didn't pan out.

The movie is based on a book written by Casey Sherman and Michael Tougias and was adapted by The Fighter screenwriters Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson. It's based on the unbelievable true story about a daring 1952 Coast Guard rescue of 84 men off Cape Cod after two oil tankers collided and were torn in half by waves during a fierce blizzard.

This sounds like such an incredible story, and it's sure to make an amazing movie! Schwentke is a solid director who also helmed the movies RED and Flightplan. Here's a full detailed description of the story from the book:

In the winter of 1952, New England was battered by the most brutal nor'easter in years. As the weather wreaked havoc on land, the freezing Atlantic became a wind-whipped zone of peril.

In the early hours of Monday, February 18, while the storm raged, two oil tankers, the Pendleton and the Fort Mercer, found themselves in the same horrifying predicament. Built with "dirty steel," and not prepared to withstand such ferocious seas, both tankers split in two, leaving the dozens of men on board utterly at the Atlantic's mercy.

The Finest Hours is the gripping, true story of the valiant attempt to rescue the souls huddling inside the broken halves of the two ships. Coast Guard cutters raced to the aid of those on the Fort Mercer, and when it became apparent that the halves of the Pendleton were in danger of capsizing, the Guard sent out two thirty-six-foot lifeboats as well. These wooden boats, manned by only four seamen, were dwarfed by the enormous seventy-foot seas. As the tiny rescue vessels set out from the coast of Cape Cod, the men aboard were all fully aware that they were embarking on what could easily become a suicide mission.

The spellbinding tale is overflowing with breathtaking scenes that sear themselves into the mind's eye, as boats capsize, bows and sterns crash into one another, and men hurl themselves into the raging sea in their terrifying battle for survival.

Not all of the eighty-four men caught at sea in the midst of that brutal storm survived, but considering the odds, it's a miracle -- and a testament to their bravery -- that any came home to tell their tales at all.

Michael J. Tougias and Casey Sherman have seamlessly woven together their extensive research and firsthand interviews to create an unforgettable tale of heroism, triumph, and tragedy, one that truly tells of the Coast Guard's finest hours.

James Dean Biopic Being Developed by Anton Corbijn

0
0

Anton Corbijn, the director of films such as Control and George Clooney's The American is developing a feature film biopic centered on the legendary actor James Dean

The movie is called Life, and the story will focus on the friendship and working relationship between photographer Dennis Stock and Dean. The Wrap reports that the script was written by Luke Davies (Candy) and that the story is set in 1955 before the premiere of East of Eden, which is before Dean became the iconic movie star we all know.

Photographer Dennis Stock meets undiscovered star James Dean at a party and quickly comes to believe that the free-spirited actor has the potential to personify a social revolution. Beset with guilt from being an estranged parent to his son, Dennis slowly emerges from behind his bravado, spending time with Jimmy in Los Angeles, New York, and Indiana, having been commissioned Life Magazine. The photos would capture a star in the making and provide Dennis with the self-belief to be an international renowned artist.

It sounds like a solid film, and a good project for this director to take on. Corbijn's next film is A Most Wanted Man, which stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rachel McAdams, Willem Dafoe, and Robin Wright

First Look at Vincent Cassel in BEAUTY IN THE BEAST

0
0

Here's our first look at Vincent Cassel and Lea Seydoux in director Christophe Gans' big screen adaptation of the classic fairytale Beauty and the Beast. You might not know it, but you are familiar with Gans' previous work. He's directed films such as the live-action manga adaptation Crying Freeman, Brotherhood Of The Wolf, and the insane adaptation of Silent Hill. Here's a statement from the director in which he discusses the film that he's making...

Beauty And The Beast is the adaptation of a story by Madame de Villeneuve. Published anonymously in 1740 as La Jeune Américaine et les contes marins, it paints a portrait of Belle, a joyful and touching young girl who falls in love with the Beast, a cursed creature in search of love and redemption. In 1760, a condensed children’s version was published. It was from this version that Jean Cocteau and then Walt Disney drew their famous adaptations. Overshadowed, the original version by Madame de Villeneuve has never been adapted for the screen... until now!

Beauty And The Beast is the story of a family going through a crisis, having lost all of its possessions when the father was ruined. The encounter - at first terrifying, but then voluptuous - with this mythical Beast provides our characters with an opportunity to get back on their feet. I like to think that this film is a metaphor for the situation that is currently afflicting the world. That is one of the advantages of fairy tales, to present an ensemble of values that endure through the ages.

Beauty And The Beast speaks, among other things, of the power of dreams and love over materialism and corruption - a theme more topical now than ever. It was time to pay tribute to Madame de Villeneuve’s story: an amazingly contemporary tale, in which the poem of love is also a message of hope.

- Christophe Gans

I like the costume designs in the first photo and I'm looking forward to seeing more! Chances are this Beauty and the Beast adaptation is going to be extremely cool.

Bumblebee's Badass New Look in TRANSFORMERS 4

Here's our first look at Bumblebee's new look in Michael Bay's Transformers 4! He's "a highly modified, vintage 1967 Camaro SS." Out of all the cars revealed for the movie so far, this one is my favorite. I actually like it better than the design from the first few films.

The movie also stars Mark WahlbergJack Reynor, Nicola Peltz, Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammer, Sophia Myles, T.J. Miller, and Li Bingbing. We're still waiting on official story details, but the movie comes out in theaters on June 27th, 2014.

What do you think of Bumblebee's new look?

First Ridiculous Trailer for MACHETE KILLS

The trailer for Robert Rodriguez's Machete Kills has been playing in theaters for over a week already, but it has finally been released online. So if you haven't seen it yet, this is your chance. Machete is such a ridiculous over-the-top film franchise. I enjoyed the first film, and the sequel looks like it could be even crazier.

Danny Trejo leads the ensemble cast that includes Lady Gaga, Cuba Gooding Jr., Sofia Vergara, Vanessa Hudgens, Amber Heard, Michelle Rodriguez, Zoe Saldana, Edward James Olmos, William Sadler, Mark Zaror, Demián BichirMel Gibson, and Charlie Sheen who for the first time is going by his given name Carlos Estevez

In MACHETE KILLS, Danny Trejo returns as ex-Federale agent MACHETE, who is recruited by the President of the United States for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man – he must take down a madman revolutionary and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war and anarchy across the planet.

The movie comes out on September 13th, 2013, now check out this wild trailer.

IRON MAN 3 - Special Effects for the HUD

Iron Man's HUD is one of the several very cool aspects of the films. It's a fun and inventive way of seeing Tony Stark inside his armor. Here's a great behind the scenes video posted by John Likens that breaks down the visual effects done by Cantina Creative to create the HUD for Iron Man 3. Here's an explanation that came along with the video:

Marvel tasked us with designing all the elaborate 3D head-up displays (HUDs) – a virtual graphical interface that Iron Man sees from within the helmet environment of his armored suits that communicate essential data and statistics ranging from his physical condition to weapon and navigational diagnostics – While putting strong emphasis on the new ultra-high-tech Mark 42 suit, we also delivered upgraded HUDs to match the new suits seen in the film. It was great fun.

All of the 3D elements, including a miniature version of the suit and the holographic helmet, were generated and rendered from CINEMA 4D. These graphics had true 3D depth, which heightened the stereo viewing experience as well as the interactive light qualities that are both photo-real and immersive.

This is a process montage that was created to give some insight into the development and design thinking stages of the work I was specifically involved with on the film.

This is a great video with lots of cool and interesting stuff to see.

Tom Hardy to Play Elton John in ROCKETMAN?

0
0

Tom Hardy, the man who played Bane, Bronson and Mad Max is now apparently up for the role of Sir Elton John in the biopic being developed called Rocketman. I've got to say that he is a really odd choice. John expressed at one point that he'd like to see Justin Timberlake play him, but if the part is out to Hardy, that obviously didn't pan out. As much as I like Hardy, it is really hard to imagine him in a role like this. I think Timberlake might have been the better choice -- he did a great impression of Elton John when he hosted SNL this past season.

The movie has been described as, "a biographical musical fantasy that will weave together John’s life and his music... it follows his life story from a child piano prodigy (who by age 11 won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music) to a young man who rebelled against his strict upbringing, wore outrageous costumes and became a global icon who teamed with songwriter Bernie Taupin to sell more records that just about any musical artist of his era."

According to Hitfix, there's no official offer. Hardy hasn't even expressed interest yet, but the project is out to him right now to look over. If he ends up being cast in the film, it's going to be weird to see him go through the transformation he's going to have to make. It will be different from anything else he's ever done. But then again, I couldn't imagine Michael Douglas playing Liberace either, but he pulled it off.

What do you think about the possibility of Hardy playing Elton John?

LEGENDARY: Marvel's Deck Building Game Leaves a Good Impression

0
0

Legendary has been on my radar for awhile now, but not until recently did I get a chance to play it. Being the enormous Marvel fan that I am, I was hoping for the best. After getting my hands on it, I was grateful to discover a great deal of depth and replayability. That said, getting to the good bits requires some patience.

The game comes with a vast array of card types, including hero cards, villain cards, scheme cards, bystander cards, agent cards, and finally the board itself. Overall, it's a pretty quick setup as board games go, and the longest part of the process is figuring out which heroes you can choose from for the game since the roster isn't as big as you'd probably expect. Granted, our group of players was throwing out names like Cardiac (me), Cable (me again), Wonder Woman (not naming names on that one) and other assorted characters that didn't make the cut. Most of the big guns are there though, and with future expansions I'm sure more options will be available. For most though, the current roster will be more than sufficient.

The core gameplay centers around the escape and scheme mechanics. There are 5 spots on the board (which you can peep below), and you start with one villain (drawn from the villain deck) on the right most City square. Every turn you move that villain one square to the left and draw another from the deck, which gets placed in the square he previously occupied. There is also a mastermind slot toward the left where you pick from several major villains, each having their own properties and rewards once defeated. Your goal is to fight the villains before they make their way off the board. Upon every new turn, you also draw a scheme card. Scheme cards go behind the villains on each space until they take up every square, at which point the next one can get drawn and end the game in defeat. As for the heroes, you pick 5 of them who take their space on the hero area of the board. Each card, even if it's the same hero, has different attributes and bonuses (or in Cyclops' case, detriments) when used. You have to have so many stars to recruit different heroes, which you gain in time by cycling through your deck. You also must have the requisite fight points to fight certain villains, who all take different amounts to defeat. There are more intricacies to go through, but that is the basic gist.

Remember how I said you have to take out villains as fast as you can? Truth is that is not as easy as it sounds, as it takes several rounds before you can really deal with even the lowest villain. By round 4 or 5 you finally get 1 or 2 heroes in your deck per round, but its not till round 6 or 7 where you finally start feeling like you can really contribute. While slow to start, patience does pay off, as in later rounds you are taking out several villains at once and have an array of abilities and options to put to use. Later rounds go quickly, and I imagine with subsequent playthroughs the pace of the early rounds would pick up some. After getting to that point, I couldn't wait to start another game.

The cards themselves are well done, with some really nice portraits of the cast included in the box. Some odd choices for costumes stick out, such as Cyclops having his 90's Jim Lee uniform, while everyone else has their more modern suits. Not a qualm really, just personal preference (Cap also has his classic outfit, so no real big complaint there).

The company is working on an expansion based around the Fantastic Four (complete with Galactus) and already has another one out called Dark City, which adds the Marvel Knights and X-Force characters to the mix. What's great about the expansion is that it actually adds a whole other mechanic for the bystander cards (who I didn't really mention because they frankly don't affect much in the current version of the game) and also features several other additions to the current roster of villains and henchmen.

Overall I see a really bright future for Legendary and its future expansions. The game is a great deal of fun to play, you just have to give it a few rounds before judging it.

Disney has released the final trailer for Pixar's great looking animated film Monsters Univerisity. The trailer is loaded with tons of funny new footage that shows us how Mike Wazowski found his strengths and talents as a monster, which lead him to his career with Monsters Inc. The movie will be released on June 21st, and I'm looking forward to taking the kids out to see it.

Ever since college-bound Mike Wazowski (voice of Billy Crystal) was a little monster, he has dreamed of becoming a Scarer—and he knows better than anyone that the best Scarers come from Monsters University (MU). But during his first semester at MU, Mike’s plans are derailed when he crosses paths with hotshot James P. Sullivan, “Sulley” (voice of John Goodman), a natural-born Scarer.  The pair’s out-of-control competitive spirit gets them both kicked out of the University’s elite Scare Program. To make matters worse, they realize they will have to work together, along with an odd bunch of misfit monsters, if they ever hope to make things right.

Screaming with laughter and oozing with heart, Disney•Pixar’s “Monsters University” is directed by Dan Scanlon (“Cars,” “Mater and the Ghostlight,” “Tracy”), produced by Kori Rae (“Up,” “The Incredibles,” “Monsters, Inc.”) and features music from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and award-winning composer Randy Newman  (“Monsters, Inc.,” “Toy Story 3”). The film opens in U.S. theaters on June 21, 2013, and will be shown in 3D in select theaters.

The team over at How It Should Have Ended have taken on Iron Man 3, and they give us their humorous vision of how the Shane Black-directed movie should have ended. This one had me busting up laughing. I think it's the best one these guys have created. They point out the obvious and add some great comedy. I love how they point out that the plot is the same as The Incredibles. Watch it for yourself and let us know what you think!

First Clip from WORLD WAR Z - "I Can't Leave My Family"

Paramount Pictures has released the first clip from World War Z. In the clip, Brad Pitt's character is forced into leaving his family to help stop the zombie epidemic. They basically don't give him a choice by guilt tripping him into helping.

The movie comes out on June 21st, and I hope it's as good as I've been hearing it is.

Based on Max Brooks' best-selling novel "World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War," the story revolves around United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself.

Bruce Timm Teams up with Zack Snyder for SUPERMAN Short

Warner Bros. Entertainment and DC Entertainment have unveiled a new 75th anniversary logo for Superman, and they've announced that Zack Snyder is working with Bruce Timm on a two-minute animated Superman short film. The short is new in development, and the rest of the team who is working on it includes Man of Steel storyboard artist Jay Oliva, as well as DC’s Geoff Johns and Mike Carlin and WB Animation’s Peter Girardi.

For those of you who are attending Comic-Con this year, the studio will be showing off an animatic. The short will end up being released officially in the fall.

There are no confirmed details on what the short will entail, but THR says "Snyder envisioned one continuous shot, without edits, that's an homage to the Man of Steel and his many iterations over the past 75 years: Max Fleischer's cartoons, on-screen portrayals by George Reeve and Christopher Reeves, iconic versions drawn by artists Wayne Boring, Curt Swan and Neal Adams, on up through Henry Cavill’s interpretation in Man of Steel."

Sounds like it could end up being pretty cool tribute. Warners CEO Kevin Tsujihara had this to say in a statement,

Warner Bros. is privileged to be home to the global Superman brand, which has had an unparalleled impact on popular culture for 75 years, We are proud to commemorate this milestone with exciting entertainment across the entire studio and across the globe, ensuring this enduring icon reaches new generations of audiences.

DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson added,

Superman is undeniably the greatest superhero in the world and likely the most influential comic book character of all time. In addition to being an enduring presence in pop culture for the last 75 years, he continues to be a commanding global icon.

Remember that time when DC Comics tried to kill off Superman? That was stupidest thing ever, and the fact they actually signed off on that crap always makes be laugh. The reason I bring it up is because none of this would even matter if Superman was still dead.

Kevin Smith Spotted Protesting DOGMA in Old Newscast

Just another video solidifying that Kevin Smith is indeed the man. A video has surfaced from 1999 that shows the director alongside a religious group protesting his film Dogma. He doesn't fool the news team who makes it clear they were sure it was him, but they don't out him in front of the protest group, which makes it funnier when they interview him. I love how deadpan he is in the interview, as if he isn't thrilled someone is actually filming him doing this.
