First Look at James Franco's AS I LAY DYING with Danny McBride

0
0

James Franco and Danny McBride have always teamed up for comedies such as Your HighnessPineapple Express, and the upcoming This Is The End. However, in this new film As I Lay Dying -- which Franco wrote, stars in, and directed -- is a drama based on William Faulkner's classic novel which is told in a "stream of consciousness writing style by 15 different narrators in 59 chapters. It is the story of the death of Addie Bundren and her family's quest and motivations—noble or selfish—to honor her wish to be buried in the town of Jefferson."

Set in 1930s Mississippi, the movie also stars Tim Blake Nelson (O Brother Where Art Thou), Logan Marshall-Green (Prometheus), Jim Parrack (True Blood), and Ahna O'Reilly. The movie will premiere at The Cannes Film Festival later this month.

It will be interesting to see how Franco ends up telling this story because it seems like it could be pretty complicated.

Ewan McGregor Replaces Bradley Cooper in JANE GOT A GUN

It's amazing to see the drama unfolding in Natalie Portman's indie western film Jane Got A Gun. Bradley Cooper was the last actor to drop out of the film not long ago, and today he's been replaced with Ewan McGregor. Even though this production has been plagued with problems, the replacements for the actors that have dropped out have been really good. I actually like this new cast even more than the original one. McGregor is always a solid actor, and this will be a great role for him to take on.

Gavin O’Connor (Warrior) is directing the western that also stars Joel Edgarton and Noah Emmerich. McGregor plays a character named Bishop, a man whose gang has shot up the estranged outlaw husband (Emmerich) of a woman (Portman) who knows they are coming to destroy her farm and kill her husband, because he has come home to heal. She ends up turning to her former lover played by Edgerton for help.

Superman soars in this stylish new banner for Zack Snyder's Man of Steel that was released by Legendary Pictures. One day, I need to go skydiving because it's the closest thing I'll get to ever being able to fly.

I can't wait to watch Superman kick some ass on June 14th!

A young boy learns that he has extraordinary powers and is not of this Earth. As a young man, he journeys to discover where he came from and what he was sent here to do. But the hero in him must emerge if he is to save the world from annihilation and become the symbol of hope for all mankind.

The movie stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Antje Traue, Ayelet Zurer, Christopher Meloni, Russell Crowe, Michael Kelly, Harry Lennix, and Richard Schiff.

PACIFIC RIM Video Game Images Include More Kaiju Monsters

I'm not the biggest fan of tie-in movie video games because, for the most part, they suck. Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim is getting its own game that will feature Jaeger's fighting Kaiju. It doesn't look like it will be the best game either, but I guess it's there to cater to the younger audience that doesn't really care. The images show off some more Kaiju creatures that we might end up seeing in the movie though.

The game is being developed by Yuke's Co., which is known for developing games for the WWE and the UFC as well as the video game version of the movie Real Steel.

The game is rumored to launch as a download on the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network, but that hasn't been confirmed.

Marvel's Kevin Feige Gives Advice on DC's JUSTICE LEAGUE Film

0
0

While Marvel has been blowing up the superhero film market, DC Entertainment, Legendary Pictures, and Warner Bros. have been trying to figure out what they are going to do with their superhero properties. Yeah, Christopher Nolan did some amazing things with Batman, and the new Superman movie looks like it's going to be awesome, but they have so many other characters to work with. As you know, they are looking to get a live-action Justice League movie into production, and I hope they can actually pull it off.

In a recent interview with Collider, Marvel President Kevin Feige was asked what advice he would give to Warner Bros. regarding their Justice League plans. This is what he said...

I don’t know. I’m sure they have smart people over there who have a plan and know what they’re doing. Man of Steel looks like it’s going to be awesome and obviously Dark Knight is awesome. I don’t know. It’s what I say all the time and have said over the years, which is, have confidence in the characters, believe in the source material, don’t be afraid to stay true to all of the elements of the characters no matter how seemingly silly or crazy they are. I don’t know, I think the Marvel characters have a bit of a leg up for all the reasons that Marvel fans are aware of in terms of the emotional complexity of the characters and the flawed nature of the characters. Those are obviously the elements we want to accentuate amongst all the action.

I think there have been a lot of great DC stories and there are a lot of great DC characters, and if they focus on those things the audience will be interested. It was a very unique model that we were lucky enough to be able to do – introducing each individual hero before introducing The Avengers. That, to me, is what was always interesting about The Avengers. The Avengers are not The Guardians of the Galaxy, are not The Dirty Dozen, where you spend a movie introducing each character and putting them together for the first time. The Avengers was cool because they were preexisting characters that teamed up for a big event. I think that’s why Justice League was cool, Justice League was first. That’s what they did first in comic form.

He makes some good points here, and I hope that everyone at the studio knows what they're doing when they decide to pull the trigger on this thing. If Man of Steel does well, and I'm sure it will, they are going to officially give it the greenlight and get Zack Snyder to direct it. I personally think they should figure out more of their individual characters before they try to take on a big team up of superheroes like the Justice League.

What do you think about what Feige had to say?

GHOST OF A TALE: A Story of a Mouse and His Great Adventure

0

Wonder. That's what I'm filled with every time I read about or look at screens of Ghost of a Tale. The same sense of wonder I got when I watched Fieval as a kid (give em the lazzzzyyyyyy eye! and no, I did not put that reference in just so I could say that. Lets just call that a bonus shall we).  A world that begs to be explored, and a mystery that needs to be solved, both of which are at the heart of Ghost of a Tale

What is it, you ask? The story revolves around a little mouse who ends up on an island called Periclave. The island was rumored to be the headquarters of the Army of Rats, but since has been filled with undead rats and other creatures. It's not a great place to be nowadays, but the island may also hold great treasure, so it's not all bad.

The gameplay will be a mix of third person combat and open world exploration. The graphics, while certainly early, show off a beautiful world for you and your little mouse buddy to explore. While games like Zelda and Dark Souls are cited as inspirations, the game will not be mirrors of those. This will be a far more intricate and smaller in scope experience, but hopefully one that will inspire future stories to come. What the mouse's true reason is for going on this trip has yet to be revealed, but me and more than a few others, it seems, would love to get the chance to find out.

Right now, the game is being developed by the one man band Lionel Gallat, who has a vast history working in animation (films such as The Prince of Egypt, Road to Eldorado, Despicable Me, among many others). This is definitely a passion project for the veteran animator. To help it come to life he is in the middle of a fundraising effort on indiegogo, which has as of now (thanks to a one week extension) 14 days left to meet its goal, and is over halfway there. If you're interested in supporting the game, make sure to head over and check out the official campaign page, and head over to Steam to give it a vote on Greenlight as well.

I'll be sure to give you an update if the game makes its goal. The video game world could use a bit more wonder in it, and I think this little mouse has what it takes to bring some of that back.

haha, just had to.

There's a really cool magical feeling I get whenever I'm on the set of a movie. Many of us don't always get a chance to be on the sets of these films that we're looking forward to seeing, but thanks to video and the internet we can get a sense and feel of what it is like.

Here are almost seven minutes of behind the scenes footage from Star Trek Into Darkness featuring the cast and crew hard at work, making a movie that looks insanely entertaining!

Special Effects Legend Ray Harryhausen has Passed Away

Today we've lost one of the great innovative filmmakers of our time. Special Effects legend Ray Harryhausen passed away today at the age of 92. The iconic effects master created groundbreaking techniques that helped bring his awesome creatures and monsters to life on the big screen.

He not only sparked my imagination with films such as Clash of the Titans and Jason and The Argonauts, but he also inspired Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, James Cameron and several other amazing filmmakers of our time. I've included one of my all time favorite scenes that he created for Jason and The Argonauts. I've also included a video montage tribute to his work.

Harryhausen will be missed, and our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends. Below the videos, you'll find a full statement that was released by the family of Harryhausen.

Raymond Frederick Harryhausen
Born: Los Angeles 29th June 1920
Died: London 7th May 2013.

The Harryhausen family regret to announce the death of Ray Harryhausen, Visual Effects pioneer and stop-motion model animator. He was a multi-award winner which includes a special Oscar and BAFTA. Ray’s influence on today’s film makers was enormous, with luminaries; Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Peter Jackson, George Lucas, John Landis and the UK’s own Nick Park have cited Harryhausen as being the man whose work inspired their own creations.

Harryhausen’s fascination with animated models began when he first saw Willis O’Brien’s creations in KING KONG with his boyhood friend, the author Ray Bradbury in 1933, and he made his first foray into filmmaking in 1935 with home-movies that featured his youthful attempts at model animation. Over the period of the next 46 years, he made some of the genres best known movies – MIGHTY JOE YOUNG (1949), IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA (1955), 20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH (1957), MYSTERIOUS ISLAND (1961), ONE MILLION YEARS B.C. (1966), THER VALLEY OF GWANGI (1969), three films based on the adventures of SINBAD and CLASH OF THE TITANS (1981). He is perhaps best remembered for his extraordinary animation of seven skeletons in JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS (1963) which took him three months to film.

Harryhausen’s genius was in being able to bring his models alive. Whether they were prehistoric dinosaurs or mythological creatures, in Ray’s hands they were no longer puppets but became instead characters in their own right, just as important as the actors they played against and in most cases even more so.

Today The Ray & Diana Harryhausen Foundation, a charitable Trust set up by Ray on the 10th April 1986, is devoted to the protection of Ray’s name and body of work as well as archiving, preserving and restoring Ray’s extensive Collection.

Tributes have been heaped upon Harryhausen for his work by his peers in recent years.

“Ray has been a great inspiration to us all in special visual industry. The art of his earlier films, which most of us grew up on, inspired us so much.” “Without Ray Harryhausen, there would likely have been no STAR WARS”
George Lucas.

“THE LORD OF THE RINGS is my ‘Ray Harryhausen movie’. Without his life-long love of his wondrous images and storytelling it would never have been made – not by me at least”
Peter Jackson

“In my mind he will always be the king of stop-motion animation”
Nick Park

"His legacy of course is in good hands
Because it’s carried in the DNA of so many film fans."
Randy Cook

"You know I’m always saying to the guys that I work with now on computer graphics “do it like Ray Harryhausen”
Phil Tippett

“What we do now digitally with computers, Ray did digitally long before but without computers. Only with his digits.”
Terry Gilliam.

"His patience, his endurance have inspired so many of us."
Peter Jackson

"Ray, your inspiration goes with us forever."
Steven Spielberg

"I think all of us who are practioners in the arts of science fiction and fantasy movies now all feel that we’re standing on the shoulders of a giant.
If not for Ray’s contribution to the collective dreamscape, we wouldn’t be who we are."
James Cameron

Cool STARGATE Movie Poster Art

The 1994 sci-fi film Stargate was a pretty awesome movie when it first came out. Since its release, the fanbase for it has grown thanks to the several TV series that have been made over the years. It's been awhile since I've seen the original movie, so I think I'll watch it again soon.

As a tribute to the film, artist Todd Slater created this cool limited edition poster design for the Skuzzles collection. Here's what the artist had to say about the piece,

I was 15 when Stargate was released in theaters in 1994 and I was immediately struck by it's epic scale and grand atmosphere.  The character of Ra,  the Egyptian solar deity, is the one that has really stayed with me all these years.  I wanted to give Colonel Jack O'Neil and Dr. Daniel Jackson a glimpse of what awaited them at the other end of the wormhole.  The two characters view their journey in different ways.  Dr. Jackson's journey is filled with childlike wonder seeing something magnificent and awe inspiring while Colonel O'Neil bears an atomic bomb capable of producing cataclysmic results.  We learn later in the film that the character of Ra is an alien life form who possessed the body of a young boy.  I wanted to touch on this and add some tension to the image by showing his glowing blue eyes.  The print is 8 colors and features 4 varieties of metallic gold and copper inks. There is also a hidden star chart in the background printed in a shiny black varnish.  I hope that the image brings something new to the franchise and that you all enjoy it!

This poster looks absolutely mind blowing in person. Both the regular and the variant editions contain 4 metallic copper and gold inks, with a shiny varnish star chart layer that is most apparent at certain angles under light.  The variant version is printed on holographic paper which shines slightly through the inks making the metallics pop even more. This is our first limited edition screenprint poster that contains a varnish layer and a variant printed on holographic paper, so we would love to hear what you think of these features.

The poster goes on sale Wednesday May 8th at 12:00PM Eastern time on Skuzzles' homepage.

Stargate Regular Edition:

  • Price $45
  • Size 24" x 36" featuring 8 colors (4 metallic inks & a varnish star chart layer)

Stargate Varient Holographic Edition:

Another [REC] zombie horror film has been made called [REC] 4 Apocalypse, and thanks to Bloody-Disgusting we have your first violently bloody trailer and poster for it.

Angela Vidal the young television reporter who entered the building with the fireman, manages to make it out alive. But what the soldiers don’t know is that she carries the seed of the strange infection.

I enjoyed watching the first three movies. I'm sure this sequel will be just as fun and insane. Check out the trailer!

IRON MAN 3 - Cool Concept Art and New TV Spot

Here's a stunning piece of concept art for Iron Man 3 that was created by Justin Goby Fields for end title production team. I've also included a new TV spot, proclaiming that Iron Man 3 is the number one movie in the world, and guess what... it is. The movie has made over $678 million world wide so far, so congrats to Marvel and everyone involved with the movie on that accomplishment. If you haven't seen the movie for yourself yet, make sure to check it out!

Andrew Garfield to Star in Martin Scorsese's SILENCE

Director Martin Scorsese has cast Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield in the lead role of his next film project Silence. Ken Watanabe is also going to be in the film. Scorsese has been trying to make this movie since 1991. It's based on the book written by Shusaku Endo, and it's great that he's finally moving forward with it.

I think Garfield is a solid choice for the lead role. Garfield will play "Father Rodrigues, a 17th-century Portuguese Jesuit who travels to Japan with a fellow priest amid rumors that Rodrigues’ mentor has abandoned the Church. It is a moment of religious persecution in the Asian nation, with Christians forced to practice their faith clandestinely. Watanabe will portray the priests’ interpreter." Scorsese also wrote the script for the film with Jay Cocks. Here's what the director had to say in a statement about the story, and his connection to it.

It’s something that has always been part of my life. It’s difficult for people to understand who are not part of that world that I grew up in, which was Roman Catholicism in New York City in the 1950s. I was impressed enough to try to become part of that world, and realized at the age of 15 or 16 that it was much tougher, much more complicated than I thought … in terms of vocation.

Here's the description from the book:

Young Portuguese Jesuit, Sebastião Rodrigues (based on the historical figure Giuseppe Chiara) is sent to Japan to succor the local Church and investigate reports that his mentor, Fr. Cristóvão Ferreira, has committed apostasy. (Ferreira is a historical figure, who apostatized after torture and later became a Zen monk and wrote a treatise against Christianity.)

Fr. Rodrigues and his companion Fr. Francisco Garrpe arrive in Japan in 1638. There they find the local Christian population driven underground. Security officials force suspected Christians to trample on fumie, which are crudely carved images of Christ. Those who refuse are imprisoned and killed by anazuri (穴吊り), being hung upside down over a pit and slowly bled. Those Christians who do step on the image to stay hidden are deeply shamed by their act of apostasy. The novel relates the trials of the Christians and increasing hardship suffered by Rodrigues, as more is learnt about the circumstances of Ferreira's apostasy. Finally, Rodrigues is betrayed by the Judas-like Kichijiro. In the climax, as Rodrigues looks upon a fumie, Christ breaks his silence:

"Yet the face was different from that on which the priest had gazed so often in Portugal, in Rome, in Goa and in Macau. It was not Christ whose face was filled with majesty and glory; neither was it a face made beautiful by endurance to pain; nor was it a face with strength of a will that has repelled temptation. The face of the man who then lay at his feet [in the fumie] was sunken and utterly exhausted…The sorrow it had gazed up at him [Rodrigues] as the eyes spoke appealingly: 'Trample! Trample! It is to be trampled on by you that I am here.'"

Visually Stunning ENDER'S GAME Trailer!

Gavin Hood's Ender's Game looks like it's going to be a really cool and exciting movie! The first full trailer has been released, and as a fan of the books, I really like what I'm seeing. It might not be exactly what I was hoping for, but it looks stunning and visually striking. I've been waiting for this movie for a very long time, and I think this is something I'm going to enjoy watching.

The movie stars Harrison Ford, Asa Butterfield, Ben Kingsley, Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin, Moises Arias, KhylinRhambo, Viola Davis, and Nonso AnozieEnder’s Game hits theaters on November 1st, 2013. Now watch the trailer and let us know if it gets you excited to see the movie!

In the near future, a hostile alien race (called the Formics) have attacked Earth. If not for the legendary heroics of International Fleet Commander, Mazer Rackham (Ben Kingsley), all would have been lost. In preparation for the next attack, the highly esteemed Colonel Graff (Harrison Ford) and the International Military are training only the best young children to find the future Mazer. Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield), a shy, but strategically brilliant boy is pulled out of his school to join the elite.

Arriving at Battle School, Ender quickly and easily masters increasingly difficult war games, distinguishing himself and winning respect amongst his peers. Ender is soon ordained by Graff as the military’s next great hope, resulting in his promotion to Command School. Once there, he’s trained by Mazer Rackham, himself, to lead his fellow soldiers into an epic battle that will determine the future of Earth and save the human race.

Leonard Nimoy Vs. Zachary Quinto - Hilarious Audi Commercial

This was the first thing I saw on the internet today, and it made my day. It's a hilariously awesome Audi commercial featuring the two Spocks, Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto, having a little friendly competition. There's a lot of smack talk, and Nimoy even drops the F-bomb followed by singing "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins."

What happens when old school goes head to head with new school in a battle of speed and wits? Leonard Nimoy takes on newbie Zachary Quinto and his all-new Audi S7.

I loved this ad. It's probably one of the best commercials I've seen in a long time. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

New STAR WARS Animated Series Teased in Dave Filoni's Sketch Art?

0
0

Star Wars: The Clone Wars supervising director Dave Filoni has already confirmed that he would be a part of the new Star Wars animated series that Disney and Lucasfilm will be developing. We've heard rumors and speculation on what the new series will be about, but there are no confirmed details yet. Filoni recently posted the Star Wars sketch above on his Facebook page with a note that says,

It’s hard to believe that I have worked at Lucasfilm almost eight years, and this is the first time I have ever gotten to draw a TIE fighter.

Many fans are speculating that this is our first look at what the new design will be like. I take his statement above as he is drawing the TIE Fighter in an official capacity for Lucasfilm, as part of his actual job. If this is true, then TIE Fighters exist in the new animated series, which means it takes place after Episode III. I personally think that the new series will take place after Episode VI, and bridge the gap between the original trilogy and the upcoming new movies that are in development.

Do you think the sketch is part of the new series, or do you think Filoni is just messing around doing some sketches?

David Goyer Reveals Why MAN OF STEEL Isn't Called SUPERMAN

0
0

I've never had an issue with the new Superman film being titled Man of Steel. After all, Superman is the Man of Steel. But in case you were wondering why, during a recent Podcast with Empire Magazine, screenwriter David Goyer explains their decision saying,

I would say that the marketing began early on in that we decided not to call it Superman, that was very deliberate.

That was Chris [Nolan] and I, Man Of Steel, and Warner Bros. said, ‘Why?' And we started talking about it, and we said, ‘We want a line of demarcation in the sand between the old and the new.’ We always knew we would be using the Superman glyph or the shield as we call it. But Man Of Steel was also supposed to represent our take, which was he’s a man, but he’s not made of flesh and blood, metaphorically he’s a man of steel. So that was sort of like the whole thing wrapped up in a nutshell.

So there it is, and it makes sense to me.

SHANE BLACK to Write and Direct DOC SAVAGE

0
0

Iron Man 3 director Shane Black is officially set to direct the big screen adaptation of Doc Savage for Sony Pictures. He was actually supposed to direct the film a few years ago, but it was obviously put on the backburner. Black did a fantastic job with Iron Man 3, and I'm excited to see him take on Doc Savage next!

He co-wrote the script with Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry. Savage is one of the most popular characters in the pulps of the 1930s and '40s. The character was also popularized on radio, film, and TV. Trained since birth to be nearly superhuman in every way, Doc Savage uses his skills and powers to fight evil all over the world.

Doc Savage's real name was Clark Savage, Jr. He was a physician, surgeon, scientist, adventurer, inventor, explorer, researcher, and a musician. A team of scientists assembled by his father deliberately trained his mind and body to near-superhuman abilities almost from birth, giving him great strength and endurance, a photographic memory, a mastery of the martial arts, and vast knowledge of the sciences. Doc is also a master of disguise and an excellent imitator of voices. "He rights wrongs and punishes evildoers." Author Lester Dent described his creation as a mix of Sherlock Holmes' deductive abilities, Tarzan's outstanding physical abilities, Craig Kennedy's scientific education, and Abraham Lincoln's goodness. Dent described Doc Savage as manifesting "Christliness." Doc's character and world-view are displayed in his oath, which goes as follows:

Let me strive every moment of my life to make myself better and better, to the best of my ability, that all may profit by it. Let me think of the right and lend all my assistance to those who need it, with no regard for anything but justice. Let me take what comes with a smile, without loss of courage. Let me be considerate of my country, of my fellow citizens and my associates in everything I say and do. Let me do right to all, and wrong no man.

The character has potential to be an epic movie franchise! He's a little bit of James Bond, Indiana Jones, and Ethan Hunt rolled into one. I think audiences will love this franchise. I'm confident Black will do some amazing things with it, he a collector and fan of these pulp fiction stories, so I'm sure he'll want to make sure it's done right.

Columbia production president Hannah Minghella had this to say in a statement,

We couldn’t be more excited to be building a franchise from the ground up with Shane and this team. Shane and Neal have a fantastic understanding of the character and a great take on the material and we can’t wait to get this production up and running.
