OBLIVION - 16 Cool New Stills

$

Tom Cruise has been nailing it in his last few performances, and I am looking forward to seeing what he does in Joseph Kosinki's Oblivion. As many people have pointed out, it suspiciously looks like a live action version of Wall-E, but the fact that it's scored by M83 is enough reason for me to see it. If you still need some more convincing, here is a huge set of stills from the film which gives us a look at more of the characters.

Oblivion is set for an April 19th release.

Tom Cruise stars in Oblivion, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the director of TRON: Legacy and the producer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man's confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind. Jack Harper is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack's mission is nearly complete. Living in and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.

Incredibly Cool IRON GIANT Sequel Fan Art

$

Here's an amazing piece of fan art for The Iron Giant created by Jordan Kotzebue for the classic animated film's 10-year anniversary. This shows us his vision for a sequel, and this is the idea behind it…

I wanted to do a piece of what I would have liked to see in a sequel. Ten years after the events of the first movie, the Giant finally puts himself back together again. When he goes searching for Hogarth, he finds out Hogarth is in Vietnam. All the while an invasion is approaching, with some familiar looking machines. It is discovered that the Giant was just a scout!

Iron Giant is one of my favorite animated films of all time, and I would love to see a sequel like this happen. I know it never will, but it's still a really good idea!

THE GREAT GATSBY - Six New Character Posters

Warner Bros. has released six new character posters for director Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby. They feature Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher, and Elizabeth Debicki. I'm really looking forward to seeing this adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel!

The film also stars Jason Clarke,  Amitabh Bachchan, and Jack Thompson, and it's set to be released on May 10th, 2013. Here's the synopsis:

The Great Gatsby follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

The latest character poster for Jeff Wadlow's Kick-Ass 2 features the title character Kick-Ass played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson. From what I've seen, this is sure to be another great Kick-Ass movie that fans of the comic book and the first film are going to love.

The movie also stars Chloë Grace Moretz, Morris Chestnut, John LeguizamoOlga Kurkulina, Clark DukeDonald Faison, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

Kick-Ass 2 hits theaters on August 16th, 2013. To watch the most recent red-band trailer click here.

Synopsis:

Kick-Ass, Hit Girl and Red Mist return for the follow-up to 2010’s irreverent global hit: Kick-Ass 2. After Kick-Ass’ (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) insane bravery inspires a new wave of self-made masked crusaders, led by the badass Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), our hero joins them on patrol. When these amateur superheroes are hunted down by Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse)—reborn as The Mother F%&*^r—only the blade-wielding Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) can prevent their annihilation.

When we last saw junior assassin Hit Girl and young vigilante Kick-Ass, they were trying to live as normal teenagers Mindy and Dave. With graduation looming and uncertain what to do, Dave decides to start the world’s first superhero team with Mindy. Unfortunately, when Mindy is busted for sneaking out as Hit Girl, she’s forced to retire—leaving her to navigate the terrifying world of high-school mean girls on her own. With no one left to turn to, Dave joins forces with Justice Forever, run by a born-again ex-mobster named Colonel Stars and Stripes.

Just as they start to make a real difference on the streets, the world’s first super villain, The Mother F%&*^r, assembles his own evil league and puts a plan in motion to make Kick-Ass and Hit Girl pay for what they did to his dad. But there’s only one problem with his scheme: If you mess with one member of Justice Forever, you mess with them all.

J.J. Abrams Talks About His Love of STAR WARS

It's going to be so freakin' cool to see what J.J. Abrams ends up coming up with for Star Wars: Episode VII. The guy is a huge fan of the franchise, and he's not going to screw it up and let the rest of the fans down. The guy is going to give us the best possible Star Wars movie, and I'm incredibly excited for it! In a recent interview he discusses his love for the Star Wars franchise saying,

[Star Wars] did comedy, it did drama, it did romance, it did action-adventure, it did spectacle and scope and scale. When I saw that movie it was like another echelon of mind expansion. It balanced so incredibly character, pyrotechnics and groundbreaking visuals - but more importantly, groundbreaking ideas. You take for granted so many things about it that were really novel concepts, not just visually interesting things. The sets were incredible, the miniatures, what was done with opticals, what was done with matte painting on glass.

The truth is, it was so unbelievably ballsy and out-there. They combined every trick in the book, every technique. But more importantly, it was so deeply considered in terms of character. Whatever had been planned from the beginning or not, you cannot deny the attitudes of each of those characters - alluding to a world that you didn't really have to understand, but that you knew existed.

My favourite movie, Annie Hall or Jaws or whatever, those are brilliant movies, but Star Wars did so much more because its ambition was preposterously huge. So, while I don't think it influenced me more, it opened up another dimension of what was possible. But then I would say it doesn't easily lend itself to influence, frankly, because it is so unique in its existence.

He then talked about showing his kids the original movies...

There was really no debate for me. There was no wrestling. I showed them the movies in the order they were made. The originals, yes, This is critical.

That is exactly how I showed the films to my own kids. I've always thought that Abrams would be a great choice to take on this franchise, and his love and respect for it is just an added bonus that will pretty much secure the new film's awesomeness!

During director Peter Jackson's live event for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, he showed off some of the first footage from the film. I wasn't able to see it myself at the time, but Warner Bros. finally allowed Jackson to post a six-minute excerpt of the live event, which gives us our first look at the second film in the highly anticipated Hobbit series! It also includes a great question from Stephen Colbert.

The story continues in the epic adventure of Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), on a dangerous quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

The movie is set to hit theaters on December 13th, 2013. Check out the preview below and let us know what you think! I loved An Unexpected Journey, and I'm excited for this next chapter in the film series!

METAL GEAR SOLID: Fun At The Playground Print by Yale Stewart

As a huge fan of JL8 (the weekly web comic that Yale Stewart produces featuring toddler versions of the Justice League), I was glad to see him start offering prints for sale on his website. One of the first ones up for sale is this fantastic Metal Gear Playground print. Kid versions of Solid, Liquid, Meryl, and even a cloaked Gray Fox are all featured in some way or another. Personally the playground itself is pretty sweet on its own, so all the little references just make it that much better. You can grab one from his online store, and if you like his art make sure to check out more of his great work here and here.

PINEAPPLE EXPRESS 2 Red-Band Trailer for THIS IS THE END

As you know, today is April Fools' day, and there's going to be a lot of fake news spreading around the internet. We don't have any plans to fake anyone out today with any made up news, but here's a hilarious April Fools' day red-band trailer for Seth Rogen and James Franco's upcoming comedy called This Is The End, which is basically a fake trailer for Pineapple Express 2

We saw a few scenes from this movie at WonderCon over the weekend, and it looks freakin' hilarious! They're going to kill off a ton of celebrities in the movie, and one of the first scenes we saw was Michael Cera's death, which was amazing.

The movie also stars Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill, Emma Watson, Danny McBride, Michael Cera, Craig Robinson, Paul Rudd, Martin Starr, Rihanna, Aziz Ansari, and Kevin Hart. All of the actors play overly exaggerated versions of themselves, which is great!

The comedy This Is The End follows six friends trapped in a house after a series of strange and catastrophic events devastate Los Angeles. As the world unravels outside, dwindling supplies and cabin fever threaten to tear apart the friendships inside. Eventually, they are forced to leave the house, facing their fate and the true meaning of friendship and redemption.

The movie hits theaters on June 14th, 2013, and it's going to be one of the must see comedies of the year. Enjoy the April Fools' day trailer!

Paramount Pictures Moving Forward with Third G.I. JOE Movie!

$

G.I. Joe: Retaliation made over $132 million this weekend, and it has inspired the studio to move forward with another sequel! It didn't hurt that the movie starred Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Bruce Willis, and Channing Tatum. It's really not surprising that we'll be seeing a third G.I. Joe film. As much as I enjoyed the action and characters in this latest film, the story and script were still very weak. Maybe they'll get that aspect of the movie franchise right the third time around.

It will be interesting to see how they move forward with a third movie, and what characters they'll include. They killed off a major character in Retaliation, and it's hard to imagine the G.I. Joe franchise continuing without him. Director Jon Chu was at the screening of the film I attended, and he addressed this aspect of the story with a question asking, "Can characters really die in the G.I. Joe universe?" It's G.I. Joe, if they want to they can bring him back.

A perfect example of this is the original animated G.I. Joe: The Movie, in which Duke gets a cobra snake thrown into his chest and heart within the first 20 minutes of the movie. That should have killed him, but guess what, he ended up being just fine at the end of the movie. It just goes to show that you never know.

What are your thoughts on Paramount making a third G.I. Joe movie?

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS - New TV Spot and Writers Discuss Themes

$

Here's a new 60-second, UK TV spot for Star Trek Into Darkness that was released over the weekend. I've also included some quotes from writers and producers of the film, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, from a recent interview with Star Trek Magazine in which they discuss Benedict Cumberbatch's role, the title of the film, and the themes of the story.

Orci on Cumberbatch and how his character relates to the title of the movie:

Well he understands Starfleet because he was enlisted in a similar way. Some might see part of the title coming from the fact that he’s kind of a dark shadow of members of our crew. He too has gone through the process to some degree, that some of our crew have gone though, and clearly for some reason it’s failed to bring him over, so I think he represents that part of our heroes.

On the relationship of the crew:

The relationship [between Kirk and Spock] is still forming itself, and in many ways forms itself over the course of this movie. It also gives us a great opportunity, because of the logic versus emotion conflict is such a brilliant and wonderful backdrop against which to pit a huge problem like Benedict Cumberbatch walking into their life. It isn’t just Kirk and Spock, it’s all of them, and how they’re all functioning together now. They are not the well oiled machine that they were in the original series, because they had gone through many, many more missions in the original series.

Kurtzman on the themes of the film:

The thing that’s been interesting to us is that, despite the fact that we are literally going Into Darkness, I think we all worked very hard to make sure the theme of hope, what hope costs, and what it’s really about, was always alive in how we were designing our story. So we’re pretty consistent with the last movie in terms of dark things happening, but holding on to the light that Roddenberry set up as a basic tenet of the Star Trek universe.

The J.J. Abrams directed film stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Peter Weller. It will be released on May 17th, 2013. Enjoy the new TV Spot!

The first trailer for Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters has been released! If you saw The Host this past weekend, then there's a good chance you've already seen this. If not, then here ya go! I haven't read any of the books, but this movie looks like it will be a lot of fun!

The movie has a solid cast that includes Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario, Douglas Smith, Mary Birdsong, Yvette Nicole Brown, Missi Pyle, Nathan Fillion, Anthony Head, Paloma Kwiatkowski, Leven Rambin, Stanley Tucci, Robert Maillet, and Zoe Aggeliki. Here's a story description:

Stephen King's UNDER THE DOME - First Look Video Preview and Teaser

This past weekend at WonderCon, CBS showed off some of the first actual footage for the upcoming Stephen King and Steven Spielberg series Under The Dome. The network has now released the video online which includes footage from the series, a look behind the scenes, and King talking about the project. The show looks like it's going to be great! I've also included a new teaser for you to watch.

Brian K. Vaughan of LOST wrote the series, and the director of the Swedish version of The Girl with the Dragon TattooNiels Arden Ople, directed the first episode. When talking about the show at WonderCon Vaughn said that it's a "super fun pulpy show with great characters." Showrunner Neal Baer added, "There are always twists and turns in the unexpected and that's what we're trying to do, too."

Here's a description of the story:

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester’s Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener’s hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when—or if—it will go away.

Dale Barbara, Iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens—town newspaper owner Julia Shumway, a physician’s assistant at the hospital, a selectwoman, and three brave kids. Against them stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing—even murder—to hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark pantry. But their main adversary is the Dome itself. Because time isn’t just short. It’s running out.

The series is set to be released on June 24th, 2013, and it's one of the few new series that I'm excited about!

JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK Film Will Center on John Constantine

Director Guillermo del Toro showed up at WonderCon this weekend to show off some incredibly badass footage from his upcoming film Pacific Rim. The footage that was screened was absolutely mind blowing! If you weren't there to see it, then you still have no idea of the awesomeness that awaits you. The movie might just be so amazing that it will melt our brains.

During the Q&A section of the panel, he was asked about his Justice League Dark/Dark Universe film that he's developing over at Warner Bros. He revealed that the bible for the film has been completed, and once again says that he hopes he can announce the screenwriter for the film soon.

He goes on the say that the story for the movie will revolve around the blonde version of John Constantine who is tasked with recruiting the other members of the team, which includes the previously-announced Swamp Thing, the Demon, Deadman, the Spectre, and Zatanna as well. Here's what he had to say during the panel...

On Justice League Dark, or Dark Universe, what we’re doing is we finished the bible. Then we’re going to start the screenplay with a writer we hope we can announce very soon. What I’m doing is the lead character that guides us through that is Constantine. Blonde. He is basically trying to recruit these guys. On Etrigan, I’m using Jason Blood in the time of Merlin. We get to their origin through the story. We don’t make the origin story at the top. We find it out as they each have mysteries to solve. Swamp Thing is at peace with who he is, but Deadman still needs to figure out who shot him. It’s all woven in. When I was a kid, my two favorite characters in the whole DC Universe were Etrigan and Swamp Thing, so I’m in heaven.

There's a lot of cool stuff there to work with, and I'm excited to see Del Toro's take on it, so hopefully the studio ends up giving it the green light. This has the potential to be an incredible film! The fact that there's no script yet though tells us that this movie is a few years away from happening. In the meantime Del Toro will be directing his new horror movie Crimson Peak.

I used to own a ton of He-Man toys when I was growing up, I honestly think I had every one of them including the Castle of Greyskull playset. I'd spend hours upon hours playing with the toys setting up elaborate action sequences. Damn, those were the days!

Planet-Pulp is currently holding an art show that pays tribute to the greatness of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Here's a brilliant illustration for the show from artist Matt Luxich that features three boys playing with Masters of the Universe toys and letting their imaginations go wild. The piece is called "Masters of Imagination", and I love the concept and how it turned out!

NINJA TURTLES Reboot Teaser Poster Revealed?

April Fools' joke? Every day feels like a joke when it comes to Michael Bay's TMNT reboot anyway, so we present this poster found by reader Marcolas. The poster was found on French site Clone Web which was accompanied with this rough Google translation...

The film has not yet turned Paramount Studios and Mirage dropped a first poster.

Here is the first visual Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Ninja Turtles film directed by Jonathan Liebesman and produced by Michael Bay. The actors who embody, performance capture, the famous turtles were released not long ago and therefore production chained with a first visual that, in fact, does not reveal much but makes the mouth water.

TMNT released in June 2014.

Is it legit? I'm inclined to say no, but I'm naturally skeptical. It's still a cool poster either way!

First Bloody Look at THE RAID 2

The Raid: Redemption director Gareth Evans is in the process of shooting The Raid 2, which will be called The Raid: Berandal. It promises to kick even more ass than the first movie! And the first movie is one of the best action movies I've ever seen! The first image from the sequel has been released and, as expected, it features a guy who just had the living hell beat out of him! You can check out the previously released set photos here.

Picking up right where the first film ends, The Raid 2 follows Rama (Uwais) as he goes undercover and infiltrates the ranks of a ruthless Jakarta crime syndicate in order to protect his family and uncover the corruption in his own police force.

The movie literally takes place only two hours after the first movie ends. Here's how the director previously described the movie to us...

The idea is to take it out of that building. We've already done something self contained, we want to do something now whereby the boss of that building and the building itself everything that was terrifying and scary about that in the first film is considered small fry when it comes to the second film. So, we go to a much bigger underworld organization, and it should be great.

I'm so excited for this sequel! I can't even begin to imagine the hardcore badassery that's going to be implemented into this film!

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII and STAR TREK Mashup Posters

Here's a couple of great fan made posters for Star Wars: Episode VII that were inspired by the Star Trek Into Darkness poster. The posters were created by Josh Lange awhile back, but I ended up coming across them for the first time over the weekend and thought they were cool enough to share. I've included a description of each poster from the artist, and here's what he had to say about the poster above...

I went to the Star Wars canon from the novels, where Luke Skywalker, now a Jedi Master, returns to planet Yavin IV with R2D2 to set up the new Jedi order at the Massassi temple. I’m fairly certain the Jedi order will begin to be remade in Episode 7, and will continue to grow throughout the new trilogy.

An unknown Jedi padawan, surveying a battle-ravaged Coruscant, where massive fleets of Mon Calamari and Imperial Star Destroyers wage war above the planet’s smoking skyline. I have faith that Coruscant will play a big role in the new films, since it was the home base for the Empire before expanding to the Outer Rim in the original trilogy, and the Rebel Alliance cannot rule with confidence unless they control the city planet. Time will tell if any of these ideas are proven correct.

George Lucas' Original Script for THE STAR WARS Gets Comic Book Adaptation!

For those of you who didn't know, the first script that George Lucas wrote for Star Wars was very different from the movie he ended up making. It was originally called The Star Wars, and it included several different characters, as well as different versions of the characters that we know and love. It tells the "story of Jedi Annikin Starkiller and General Luke Skywalker, an alien named Han Solo, and evil Sith Knights." Yes, Han Solo was originally an alien!

As far as I know, most fans haven't been able to explore and get to know the story of this original script, but Dark Horse Comics has announced that they will be adapting it into an eight-issue comic book mini-series! So we're finally going to get to see what could have been!

Check out the full press release below, which makes a point of saying that this is not an April Fools day joke! I've also included some artwork from it, as well.

It’s no April Fools’ prank! Dark Horse is honored to announce a dream project: working with J.W. Rinzler, executive editor at LucasBooks, and artist Mike Mayhew (Avengers) to adapt the rough-draft original screenplay which spawned the biggest franchise in film history!

Three years before his 1977 film, George Lucas put down on paper his first story set in a galaxy far, far away—a tale of fantastic adventures, daring escapes, “lazer swords,” romance, and monsters. A story of Jedi Annikin Starkiller and General Luke Skywalker, an alien named Han Solo, and evil Sith Knights. The screenplay was titled The Star Wars!

“I’m not sure where I first read about The Star Wars—it was years and years ago—but the idea of Luke Skywalker being an older Jedi General, and Han Solo being a six-foot-tall lizard, turned my Star Wars fan brain on its side,” said longtime Star Wars editor Randy Stradley. “I always assumed this would be one of those stories that would be ‘lost to history,’ so getting to work on bringing it to life is kinda like a dream come true.”

“While researching in the Lucasfilm Archives I’ve found many treasures—but one which truly astounded me was George’s rough draft forThe Star Wars. His first complete imaginings were hallucinating to read—mind blowing,” said writer J.W. Rinzler. “While working with George on another book project, I once asked if we could adapt his rough draft. He was hesitant. Years later, with Dark Horse’s invaluable help, we showed him a few drawn and colored pages of what it might look like. He gave us the okay.”

Originally conceived in 1974, The Star Wars has been the subject of rumor and legend in the fan community throughout the history of the galaxy far, far away. Now, Lucas has seen fit to grant Dark Horse the right to adapt this fabled story into an eight-issue comic series launching in September!

I'm really looking forward to reading this! Have any of you ever had the chance to read the original script?
