IRON MAN 3 - Kevin Feige Discusses the Villain Eric Savin

$

In all of the trailers and TV spots that have been released for Iron Man 3, one character we haven't really seen very much of is the villain Eric Savin who is played by James Badge Dale. In the comics, the character is a U.S. Army lieutenant colonel who later becomes a cyborg villain known as Coldblood. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige sheds some new light on what role this character will play in the movie saying,

James Badge Dale plays a character known as Savin. He works for Guy Pearce’s character, Aldrich Killian. You don’t know a lot about Savin at first but as the movie unfolds you learn more and more that he is a very frightening individual and he’s somebody that has used Maya Hansen’s technology Extremis for his own ends. He’s somebody who can walk around and seemingly be just sort of an average Joe, but who presents himself with such a cocky confidence that you’re not sure where that’s coming from or why he has it and then you see what he can do. James is an amazing actor, whom we looked at for a number of different films. We saw him for the first time in the miniseries “The Pacific,” where he does a tremendous job. He did a great performance in “The Grey” last year. For this role that is not the lead character or the lead hero or the lead villain, we wanted an actor who can rise above and who can hold his own against this cast and from day one, James came in and proved that he could do that perfectly. He can be very funny when he wants to be and he can be very scary when he wants to be and he does both in this movie very well.

It sounds like he is going to be a fun character to see in the Marvel universe! The movie comes out on May 3rd, and it's going to be epic!

Marvel’s Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy's hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Fans of Richard Linklater‘s Before series with Ethan Hawk and Julie Delpy will appreciate this first trailer for the third film in the trilogy, Before Midnight. These are terrific films, and if you haven't seen any of them yet, I suggest you check them out!

We had a chance to see this film up at Sundance earlier this year. Here's an excerpt from Ben's review review of the film: "Before Midnight is a progression of ups and downs, alternating between being soul-crushing and inspiring, and is a terrific conclusion to a wonderful trilogy." You can also watch a video review that we shot here

Jesse and Celine first met on a Eurail train and experienced 14 hours of deep connection as they explored Vienna. Nine years later, Celine found Jesse at a Paris book store, the last stop on his book tour. They had one day together before he was meant to fly out that night. Now, we meet up with the two off-and-on lovers nine years later, in Greece.

Great Trailer for the Horror Thriller YOU'RE NEXT

After a few years of sitting around we have the first trailer for the home invasion horror thriller You're Next. The film was directed by Adam Wingard from a script written by Simon Barrett. The two have previously worked together on films such as A Horrible Way to Die, V/H/S, and the upcoming S-VHS. I've heard a lot of great things about this movie, and this is a solid trailer that does a great job of making me want to see the movie. I love the use and choice of music in the trailer as well, which includes Lou Reed’s "Perfect Day".

The film stars AJ Bowen, Amy Seimetz, Barbara Crampton, Wendy Glenn, Margaret Laney, Rob Moran, Joe Swanberg, Nicholas Tucci, and Ti West. I've also included a few previously released images.

You’re Next reinvents the genre by putting a fresh twist on home-invasion horror. When a gang of masked, ax-wielding murderers descend upon the Davison family reunion, the hapless victims seem trapped… until an unlikely guest of the family proves to be the most talented killer of all. A Lionsgate and Snoot Films presentation in association with Hanway Films.

The movie finally opens on August 23rd, and here's the trailer! Check it out and let us know if you plan on seeing this movie!

Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo to Join VACATION Sequel

As expected, original Vacation stars Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo will be reprising their roles as Clark and Ellen Griswold in the upcoming Vacation sequel that is in development at New Line Cinema. The two actors are in early talks, but I imagine they'll be able to get them back. After all the two recently did a couple of commercials in which they reprised their roles.

They will join Ed Helms and Christina Applegate in the comedy that is being written and directed by Horrible Bosses scribes John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein. The new movie will follow Clark's son Rusty, who takes his own family on a vacation of misadventures. They hit the road, which will include a pit stop to see his mom and dad. The plan is to shoot the film this summer, and I'm looking forward to seeing what it turns out to be!

I truly hope they can close the deal with Chase and D'Angelo because the movie won't be the same without them.

Judy Greer Will Play Chimp in DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

The Descendents co-star Judy Greer is the latest actress to join the cast of director Matt Reeves' Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. According to Vulture she will take on a supporting role in the story, playing a female chimp named Cornelia who is the love interest for Caesar (Andy Serkis). She and Serkis previously worked together in 13 Going 30. Obviously they'll both be wearing motion-capture suits for their parts.

The actress also joins the previously cast actors Keri Russell, Jason Clarke, Kodi-Smit McPhee, and Gary Oldman. Greer is excited to take on the role, and here's what she had to say about it,

For so long I haven't been able to say anything about it, so this is exciting! It's a very different kind of work than I'm used to. I'm not going to be wearing Manolo Blahniks in this one.

I married a man who … I'm gonna use the word obsessed. He is obsessed with Planet of the Apes. We had a chimp husband-and-wife cake topper at our wedding. At the cocktail hour, we played Planet of the Apes and Rise of the Planet of the Apes on two separate televisions in the bar area. And on the wedding gift I bought him, a vintage Rolex, I had it engraved, 'Ape shall not kill ape.' I was then told that, technically, it's 'Ape shall never kill ape,' but there wasn't enough space for engraving purposes.

Her husband is probably more excited about her being in the movie than she is! The sequel is set 15 years after the events of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. They also reveal that one part of the story will focus on a "group of human scientists who are struggling to survive alone in San Francisco." The other part of the story will center on "intelligent ape Caesar [who struggles to] maintain dominance over his kingdom."

Fox has set the film for release on May 23rd, 2014.

Disney has released a fun new poster for their new GC animated film Planes, which stars Dane Cook as the lead character Dusty, with Julia Louis-DreyfusTeri Hatcher, and John Cleese filling in some voices as well. One of the coolest casting announcements is the addition of Val Kilmer and Anthony Edwards making Planes kind of a little Top Gun reunion. The movie also stars Brad Garrett, Stacy Keach, Colin CowherdCedric the EntertainerGabriel IglesiasCarlos AlazraquiPriyanka Chopra, and Sinbad. There’s only a couple of not-so-small problems – Dusty is not exactly built for racing and he also happens to be afraid of heights.

Jon Chu on MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE Experimental Stage

G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon Chu is currently in the process of developing a big screen adaptation of Masters of the Universe. I just hope to hell the story is a lot better than the one they came up with for G.I. Joe. The script for the film comes from Alex Litvak (Predators, The Three Musketeers) and Mike Finch (Predators, American Assassin, Hitman reboot). Chu loved the script and is excited about the project. In a recent interview with IGN he explains that they're currently in the experimental phase saying,

We're still early, but we're deep in experimenting. This is the most fun phase for me because we get to try everything we've ever wanted to try in [Masters of the Universe] and then we get to throw out all the things that don't work, which is most of it. [This allows us to know] what our tone is, where we're going to head with it and it's a very important phase because it shows [us] the direction we're going to go in the future. So we're very early, we don't know a lot yet other than that we're playing around and having a lot of fun.

It's going to be really interesting to see how this movie turns out. However after watching G.I. Joe: Retaliation, I'm sure it will end up having a lot of fun action, but a weak story and script. It's kind of sad that, at this point, the best we can expect to see from this movie is going to be mediocre.

IRON MAN 3 - The Evolution of Tony Stark's Hall of Armor

This week Marvel has been releasing a ton of Tony Stark's new armor designs, all of which look incredibly cool, and I'm sure we'll be seeing more of them! There's 42 new suits of armor that are in Iron Man 3 and you'll get to see every one of them in action doing their thing. In another interview with Marvel president Kevin Feige, he discusses the evolution of Stark's Hall of Armor and the suits that reside there.

Tony’s taken that idea of a suit that can deploy to him even further at the beginning of this film, and we have what we call the prehensile suit, which allows each individual piece of the suit to fly separately and latch on to him. It doesn’t quite work perfectly, but it is a great advancement that Tony uses throughout this movie, so that wherever he is, theoretically, he can call it to him and it can arrive. It doesn’t always work, and there’s a great scene in the movie, which we gave a little taste of to fans at Comic-Con this year in a giveaway of an art poster that Ryan Meinerding had done, where the entire suit doesn’t come to him. He just gets one glove and one boot and has to fight off a battalion of bad guys with just the boot and just the glove.”

It’s often the limitations of the suit that can provide the most fun—when the suit breaks, when the suit doesn’t quite work—and there’s that in spades. We also, though, hint early on in the film by mentioning that this is not the Mark 8 as you might think because the Mark 7 was the last suit revealed in “The Avengers.” It’s the Mark 42. So there are well over 40 suits that Tony has built in between the time of “The Avengers” and “Iron Man 3” because of his obsession.

By the end of the film, we see each and every one of them, and you realize Tony is a mechanic, and he has been tinkering. Any conceivable idea he had about the suit technology he built and stored in his Hall of Armor. Finally, after talking about it for four movies we finally see his Hall of Armor and the giant army of suits that he’s built for himself.

We get a tease of these suits in the latest trailer for the film, and it's going to be incredibly cool to see each of them in action and in battle! The ending of the film was so awesome that Avengers director Joss Whedon is worried about trying to top it in The Avengers 2!

The movie stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Ben Kingsley, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale, Jon FavreauRebbeca Hall, and Guy Pearce. It's set to open in 3D and 2D theaters on May 3rd, 2013. That day can't get here soon enough!

PACIFIC RIM Poster Features Striker Eureka Jaeger

Here's another cool character poster for Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim which features Australia's Striker Eureka Jaeger. I'm excited to see what the special abilities are for all of these giant robots when they fight the Kaiju. It's described as being the "most advanced battle machine ever assembled," so congrats to Australia for pulling that off! Nice job!

The sci-fi action film stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris ElbaRinko KikuchiCharlie Day, and Ron Perlman. The film is set to hit theaters July 12th, 2013. Here's the synopsis...

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even theJaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee —who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Secret MAN OF STEEL Villain Confirmed! - Spoilers

I seriously don't think this is a SPOILER of any kind, but I'm throwing the warning out there just in case to cover my ass. So if you don't want to know what secret villain has been confirmed for Zack Snyder's Man of Steel don't read ahead, but the fact that you clicked through to read the article tells me that you want to know so here ya go!

A couple of days ago we posted a quote from screenwriter David Goyer about the decision to leave Lex Luthor out of this latest Superman film. Instead of explaining why the villain wasn't included though, Goyer said this...

I don’t think anyone has [ever] confirmed that we haven’t included him.

It essentially led us to believe that Lex would be in the film. Well, thanks to AICN, it looks like we now have confirmation that Lex is going to the be in the movie. Their source says that Lex will be played by an actor named Mackenzie Gray who happened to play a Luthor clone in Smallville. They go on to say that this won't be a goofy version of the character, but he will be an "ambitious, ego driven and cold version of Luthor." Here's a video in which the actor confirms he's in the movie, but can't say who. He starts talking about it at about the minute mark,

The site collected a good amount of evidence, and all signs point to Mackenzie Gray playing Lex in the film. Still no information on how big the role is, but apparently it's big enough to establish the character as being ambitious, ego driven, and cold. What do you think about this bit of Man of Steel news? Here's a photo of the actor when he was on Smallville...

Martin Scorsese Developing GANGS OF NEW YORK TV Series

I loved director Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York, it was an excellent movie. For those of you who also enjoyed it, you'll be happy to know that the filmmaker is working with Miramax to adapt the story for the small screen!

According to THR the series will take place at the turn of the century and draw from the events in the film which starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz, and Daniel Day-Lewis. It was also revealed that the story will take place not only in New York, but in other cities as well, including Chicago. The story will explore the birth of organized crime in America. Scorsese had this to say in a statement,

This time and era of America’s history and heritage is rich with characters and stories that we could not fully explore in a two-hour film. A television series allows us the time and creative freedom to bring this colorful world, and all the implications it had and still does on our society, to life. I am excited to partner with Miramax in telling these stories.

I couldn't be more excited about this series! I have no doubt it's going to be amazing! There's no word on what network the series will air on yet, but I imagine it will end up landing on a cable network like HBO who Scorsese already has a relationship with.

What do you think about Gangs of New York getting a TV series?

Trailer for THE BIG WEDDING with Robert De Niro and Amanda Seyfried

The Big Wedding is one of those terrible looking films that makes you wonder how in the hell they were able to pull together such an impressive cast of actors! They include Robert DeNiro, Katherine Heigl, Diane Keaton, Amanda Seyfried, Topher Grace, Susan Sarandon, and Robin Williams. I just don't understand why someone would bring together such a talented cast and then waste that talent.

The story follows a "charmingly modern family trying to survive a weekend wedding celebration that has the potential to become a full blown family fiasco. To the amusement of their adult children and friends, long divorced couple Don and Ellie Griffin (De Niro and Keaton) are once again forced to play the happy couple for the sake of their adopted son’s wedding after his ultra conservative biological mother unexpectedly decides to fly halfway across the world to attend. With all of the wedding guests looking on, the Griffins are hilariously forced to confront their past, present and future – and hopefully avoid killing each other in the process."

The movie comes out on April 26th, and I'm not going to waste my time.

Brad Pitt Explains Why They Used Fast Zombies in WORLD WAR Z

$

0

As you've seen from the trailers, Brad Pitt's big screen adaptation of Max Brook's World War Z doesn't really represent the book at all. The one thing it has in common is that it includes zombies, but even the zombies aren't the zombies from the book. In the book they are slow, but in the movie they are a crazy fast swarm. In a recent interview with EW, Pitt explains why they ditched the slow zombies saying,

The book focused on slow zombies. We chose to be more dynamic in that we wanted to base all of this on science. So it’s ‘What if we had them move like ants? Or a swarm of bees? Or birds or a school of fish that’s being chased?’ One of the first [questions] we asked was how to portray the zombies and how to do it differently because it’s been done so many times and been done pretty damn well.

You can't really argue with him; they did come up with a genuinely unique style of zombie that's sure to be entertaining to watch. Hopefully the special effect can hold up throughout the entire movie. Even though the movie isn't really World War Z, it still looks like it's going to be an entertaining zombie flick.

THE WALKING DEAD Body Count Revealed for Season Finale

AMC is taking the gloves off for the Season 3 finale of The Walking Dead! The episode is called "Welcome to the Tombs" and it sounds like we're going to see a blood bath in the final showdown between Rick's small prison group and The Governor's army.

In a recent interview with the series star Andrew Lincoln, he reveals how much blood will be spilled, but don't worry! He doesn't say who's going to bite the dust. This is what he told Rolling Stone,

Twenty-seven people die. It's safe to say it is all hands to pumps. It's a crazy season finale.

That body count doesn't include the zombies thrown into the mix. That's a pretty epic body count for this show! There's going to be a few major deaths coming up, so along with the Governor's army, who else do you think is going to meet their maker? Glenn? Carol? Andrea?  Hershel? Michonne? Rick? The Governor? Daryl? Carl? Who will be watching the baby?! It's gonna get crazy people! I can't wait! Place your bets, no one is safe!!

For those of you looking to add something a little different to your movie diet, this looks like it will do the trick! It's a charming horror film about a sleepwalking cannibal! How can you go wrong? Here's the synopsis...

Thure Lindhardt (Keep the Lights On) stars in this quirky dark comedy as Lars, a former darling of the art scene slipping away into the land of has-beens and struggling with lack of inspiration. His art dealer Ronny arranges a teaching job in a small town as a "therapeutic measure" to stir up some creative juices, but things never turn out quite as planned. At first, life in the peaceful small town seems rosy, as the young man settles in and impresses beautiful fellow colleague Leslie, by taking in the brawny, mute Eddie after the latter's caregiver passes away. But Lars soon discovers that the façade of serenity hides something unimaginable: Eddie suffers from a rare form of sleepwalking that transforms him from docile, cereal-obsessed art student into ravenous sleepwalking cannibal craving fresh meat. Initially horrified by Eddie's dark secret, Lars becomes enthralled by the not-so-gentle giant: at long last, here's the muse he'd been searching for high and low! Exceptional art does indeed come at a very high price, even the cost of human lives...and how far is Lars willing to go for his next masterpiece?

The movie will be released in theaters and VOD next Friday on April 5th, and it's a movie I'll definitely be checking out! It looks fantastic!

Classic Marvel Superhero Comic Art Thrown in Modern Movies

This is an awesome series of art created by Butcher Billy that replaces live-action Marvel movie superheroes/villains with classic comic book character art from the 60s and 70s. The series is called "The Superhero Media Crossover Project," and here's what the artist had to say about it....

It’s easy to forget how much the comic stylings of the 60’s and 70’s have inspired modern films and just how timeless those two-dimensional, spandex-clad superheroes can be. This series replaces live action with the lines they were born from, interlacing cinematography with storyboard.

A true homage to Kirby, Ditko, Romita Sr. and all the other artists that kept inspiring and being a reference to the modern media. And all of us.

Disney's IRON MAN 3 Set Video with New Footage and Fun Facts

Art by Scyao

The Disney Channel is airing a behind-the-scenes video from the set of Iron Man 3 that features some new footage from the film. It's a low quality video, but it's still worth checking out if you're excited about seeing Shane Black's badass looking movie. Some of the footage includes scenes with Robert Downey Jr. and the young actor Ty Simpkins who plays a 10-year-old named Harley that Tony Stark befriends.

I've also included a list of fun facts below the video about the movie that comes from Stitch Kingdom. The movie is set to open in 3D and 2D theaters on May 3rd, 2013.

  • Marvel’s Iron Man 3 blends two classic storylines from the ‘Iron Man’ comics, bringing Tony Stark’s archenemy the Mandarin into play and combining that element with the Extremis storyline, which deals with the biological enhancement of humans.
  • Production on Marvel’s Iron Man 3 commenced on May 25, 2012, in Wilmington, North Carolina, where the production shot onstage at the Sony Screen Gems Studios and various locations in and around the city of Wilmington. Other filming locations included Raleigh, N.C. and Miami, Fla.
  • Academy Award®–winning actor Ben Kingsley plays the Mandarin, a frightening, modern-day villain bent on destroying Tony Stark and everything he stands for. To define the Mandarin’s persona, Kingsley came up with the Mandarin’s enigmatic voice and costume designer Louise Frogley collaborated with Marvel’s Head of Visual Development, Ryan Meinerding, to pull off a highly original look to his wardrobe.
  • For the first time in the “Iron Man” film franchise, the filmmakers go deeper into revealing more about Tony Stark’s Hall of Amor. The Hall of Armor houses all of the suits that Stark conceived, representing any and all of his ideas regarding suit technology.
  • Marvel’s Iron Man 3 brings back the notable cliffside Stark Mansion. This set was built on a soundstage in Wilmington, N.C. and required 16 weeks of construction and set decoration in order to get it ready. The set was built on an impressive moving gimble, which allowed the entire structure to be tilted 45 degrees and reset at a moment’s notice, providing for the dramatic stunt work required to film the House Attack sequence.
  • For the filmmakers, creating the small town where Iron Man crash lands after his home is destroyed was something that could not be done on stage, so the production headed to Rose Hill, North Carolina. Rose Hill has its own claim to fame for having the world’s largest frying pan, which is 15 feet in diameter, weighs two tons and can cook 365 chickens at a time.
  • Filming in Rose Hill, North Carolina, was no easy task. As if five straight weeks of night shoots weren’t grueling enough, the short summer days made for a tight schedule. The very complicated and elaborate sequences meant that the crew was always racing to complete work before dawn broke.
  • Some of the exterior shots in Rose Hill were winter scenes complete with snowfall. Since it was summer in North Carolina during filming, 90-degree temperatures were common, but the local background extras took it all in stride, despite the fact they were dressed in full winter clothing.
  • The majority of scenes involving The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) were shot in Miami. Production designer Bill Brzeski created The Mandarin’s compound there by shooting the exteriors on the 10-acre grounds of the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, a National Historic Landmark built in 1916, and the interiors were shot at a private waterfront residence in South Beach.
  • Prop master Russell Bobbit, who worked on Marvel’s Iron Man and Iron Man 2, returned to work with Marvel Studios on Iron Man 3. One of Russell’s favorite props was The Mandarin’s set of ten rings. Bobbit collaborated with jewelers through several concepts and manufactured specific stones for the rings, giving each ring a custom paint job. The process took a few months in order to get the rings right and ready for Ben Kingsley’s first day. Bobbit was able to use the same ‘ten rings’ images he designed for use in the first Iron Man film.
  • Florida pop-art artist Bask was hired to create distinctive artwork for the office and bedroom of the Mandarin’s residence that would mesh with the villain’s persona. Although the basis of Bask’s work is pop art, it is infused with influences from comic books, graffiti and punk rock fliers.
  • Iron Man 3 pairs Robert Downey Jr. and Ben Kingsley working together for the first time. Both actors also played memorable roles in films directed by Richard Attenborough (Downey Jr. in Attenborough’s Chaplin and Ben Kingsley in Attenborough’s Gandhi). The first day they met on set, Downey Jr. and Kingsley snapped a photo together to send to their mutual friend.
