This year's Academy Awards ceremony will go down in history for the way it ended: the perfect storm of confusion that led Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway to announce La La Land as Best Picture when, in fact, Barry Jenkins' Moonlight won the award. There are a myriad number of ways this could have been prevented, but this new video from Vox pinpoints the confusing typography on the cue cards and explains how slight design tweaks on that card (and elsewhere beyond the Oscars) can elicit hugely different results.

Who Would Have Guessed Playing With a Slinky Can Actually Look Cool?

I don't know about you, but when I played with a Slinky growing up, it was fun for all of five minutes before I realized that it wouldn't slink its way down more than maybe three or four stairs in a row. So I always thought they were kind of lame, but maybe I was just bad at it. Watching this video from Kuma Films, I now see what's possible with a Slinky. While this doesn't mean I'm going to go out and buy one right now to start practicing, I might have had more fun with mine as a kid if I'd had the creativity to take it to this level.

New Trailer For PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES - "Are All Pirates This Stupid?"

$

Disney has released a new trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and it features a few bits of new footage from the upcoming film. I know a lot of people seem to be tired of these Pirates movies, but it has to be seen if this next chapter will be good or bad. I hope it's good for the sake of the directors that made it, Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning, who won me over with their previously made film Kon-Tiki, which was wonderful.

Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.

Depp and Bardem are joined by Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa, Kevin R. McNally as Joshamee Gibbs, and Stephen Graham as Scrum. Newcomers include Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner), Brenton Thwaites (Maleficent), and Golshifteh Farahani (Exodus: Gods and Kings).

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales hits theaters on May 26th, 2017.

New SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Teaser Features the "Spider-Tracer" and a New Trailer Hits Tomorrow!

After three posters were released over the past few days for Spider-Man: Homecoming, a little teaser has been released for the highly anticipated Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures film! The brief tease gives us a look a new piece of technology that Peter Parker (Tom Holland) gets to play with in the film... the Spider-Tracer!

The Spider-Tracer is a piece of tech that allows the hero to track objects or individuals. In the comic book, Spider-Man would plant these on his enemies and would follow the target to their hideout. In the movie, the Spider-Tracer is actually the spider logo on the chest of his suit, which is actually pretty cool. The promo also gives us a brief tease of a battle with The Vulture (Michael Keaton).

It also teases a new trailer for the film that will be released tomorrow, so that gives us all something to look forward to! I can't wait to see what that trailer has in store for us! While we wait, enjoy the little tease!

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.

Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theaters on July 7.

The Vulture "Has a Bone to Pick" with Iron Man in SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, Plus a New Photo!

Some intriguing new details have surfaced regarding Michael Keaton's The Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming along with a new photo, thanks to USA Today. Earlier we got a brief new trailer tease announcing a new trailer that will be released tomorrow. While you wait for that, Director Jon Watts and Keaton talk about The Vulture.

Talking about the villain, Watts explains that he wanted to show off a different dynamic of the MCU and give us some insight into what it's like for someone to be a regular guy in a world full of powerful heroes. He explains:

“My whole approach for this movie is that we’ve seen the penthouse level of the (Marvel) universe. We’ve seen what it’s like to be a billionaire inventor and to be a Norse god. We’ve seen the very top of this world. But we’ve never seen what it’s like to be just a regular joe.”

Keaton adds:

“Some people see themselves as victims — he sees himself a little bit like that. He probably would have a strong argument that he never got a fair shot — a lot of ‘Why not me? Where’s mine?’”

It's revealed that The Vulture, a.k.a. Adrian Toomes, runs a New York salvaging company in the movie. That salvaging company cleans up the messes left behind after the big superhero battles that take place in the MCU. He ends up getting a little pissed off at Tony Stark after a new government organization he founded steps in to take over after an altercation.

According to co-producer Eric Hauserman Carroll, Toomes “has a bone to pick” with Stark and "sort of becomes the dark Tony Stark" in the process. It's explained that Toomes and his crew, which includes Shocker (Bokeem Woodbine) and the Tinkerer (Michael Chernus), use scavenged alien artifacts and stolen advanced tech to put together weaponry to sell to other criminals.

Watts goes on to say that “this neat junk from all the other movies. It’s a really great starting point for the villains to have the Vulture picking over the stuff and finding the valuable exotic elements and having the Tinkerer assemble into something that could be used.”

According to Carroll, Toomes feels that "once he has this money and power, he'll have more control of his life." Of course, we all know that money and power don't fix problems.

The director of the film went on to reveal that his inspiration of Vulture's “ground-level perspective” came from John C. Reilly's character in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy. He's just a normal guy that gets caught up in a crazy big life or death adventure. Watts explains:

“I like the idea that in these huge movies, you pick out one extra and you’re like, ‘What does he think of all this?’ Sometimes these movies are so casual about just destroying whole cities and incredible things happen and everyone’s like, ‘Eh, whatever.’ If that really happened, it would be amazing and change everything.”

I love the direction that they are taking The Vulture in the MCU, and I think it's going to pay off big, especially with Keaton playing the role!

Two Surfer Bros Crash a California City Council Meeting to Request a 12-Foot-Tall Statue of Paul Walker

Late last week, two surfer bros — one apparently named Chad Kroeger (yup, same as the lead singer of Nickelback) and the other apparently named Bodhi — addressed the San Clemente, California city council and requested a 12-foot-tall statue of Fast & Furious star Paul Walker be erected on the city's pier. I'll pause for a second to let you soak in all of the glorious aspects of that sentence.

It's technically unclear whether this is a prank (I'm pretty sure it's a prank), but these Fast fans have actually made this same plea to a city council in Burbank, California as well, so it seems they won't stop until somehow, somewhere, a 12-foot statue of Paul Walker looks out over a city and unites us all in "gnarly times."

There's video at the bottom of the page, but if you don't feel like watching, LAist has transcribed it for us:

What up Council, my name is Chad Kroeger. First, I just want to say I'm truly honored to be here. To be in a city where you can have a surf session and then go to City Council meeting within the span of an hour, I think that shows the American Dream is still very much alive.
Alright to the serious stuff: I stand before you today in the midst of gnarly times. I'm a freelance journalist, and after interviewing hundreds of people, I've witnessed first hand the ever growing divide between Americans and families torn apart by political differences. It's in times like these we need a unifying figure we can all turn to, a beacon of headlights that can guide us down the dusty road.
I was 11-years old when my first love Ashley betrayed me by moving to Newport Beach. I felt lost, alone, bummed. And it was in that melancholy that my dad took me to see The Fast And The Furious, where for an hour and 47 minutes I transcended my worries because I had just met my new hero, Paul Walker. Afterwards at Carl's Jr., I thought about what Paul taught me. I think the most inspiring thing was the fact that even after Dominic Torreto beat him in that first race, Paul still managed to bed his sister, pretty inspiring. Another thing is he still saved Vince even though Vince was flexing on him the entire movie, and questioned his love for tuna sandwiches, which I think is a true testament to his character.
And I just want to go off book here: it wasn't just Fast and the Furious, he inspired me in a ton of other movies as well: skulls, Meet the Deedles8 BelowInto The Blue, Varsity Blues, just to know a few, and that rhymes. Paul's onscreen legacy was unfortunately cut short. But that does not mean his impact on society must be cut short as well. Detroit has the Robocop. Philly has Rocky. We need Paul Walker. That is why I'm proposing that the city erect a 12-foot tall steel statue of Paul Walker on the pier.

And here's Bodhi's follow-up speech:

Hello Council, I'm really nervous. I haven't spoken in public since my stepmom's funeral. My name is Bodhi. I'm also a freelance journalist.
2017 has been a bummer year so far. You probably can't tell by looking at me, but I'm a laid back dude, and everyone has just been so steamed lately. Well I'm PO'd too, because we're all just running around being literally non-unified. It's in times like these we need a unifying figure we can all turn to. A beacon of headlights that can guide us down a dusty road. Sorry Chad, I stole that from your speech but, it was good.
We've been to all the Council hangouts around SoCal trying to build the statue. Watching that movie was epically life-changing. It gave me the courage to ask out Shelby. It taught me to never back down, even if a super tough crew of street racers come at you. Stand tall.
I'm pretty sure Paul's cousin went to St. Clemente High School, for at least for a couple semesters. And Paul's spirit encompasses what this town is all about. Which is why I'm here before you today. The thing is though, I'm really busy right now, I"m taking a couple junior college classes, and I don't have time to be driving all over fighting for statues. It says on my shirt, 'When you put good will out there it's..." What can be accomplished by Paul Walker. So let's accomplish this, let's do the right thing.

The POWER RANGERS Cast Wants the Green Ranger to Be a Girl

Now that Power Rangers is in theaters, spoilers are flooding the web. That said, the following article contains spoilers for the film...so turn back if you care about that.

Now that we've seen the end credits scene for the new Power Rangers film, we know that the series will be adding the green ranger, Tommy Oliver, in a sequel. That role (the character doesn't appear in the end credits scene...just their green jacket) is still up for grabs, and the Power Rangers cast wants a girl in the role. Red Ranger Dacre Montgomery shares his thoughts:

"A lot of the cast and I have discussed that we think it should be a girl...It makes it even three girls, three boys.”

I say why not? If this film did one thing, it was show that this is a different Power Rangers for a different audience. I'm fine with them casting male or female, what about you? Thanks Comicbook for the heads up.

This video from YouTubers The Geek Twins claims to be a supercut of every single time Hugh Jackman's Wolverine slashed someone or something in a live-action movie, but having seen Logan, I know firsthand that they missed tons of slashes from that movie alone.

Instead of repeating their false claim in a headline, I'll present this to you as being a mostly-complete look at Jackman's clawed hero slashing his way through the X-films. You can get hung up on the fact that there are some missing, or you can go with the flow and watch the supercut anyway. The choice is yours, bub.

The Major Battles the Hexapod Tank in Thrilling Final Trailer for GHOST IN THE SHELL

Ghost in the Shell hits theater this weekend, but before we see it, here's one final thrilling action-packed trailer for you to watch. The trailer offers us a bit of new footage from the film and if this is a movie you're looking forward to watching, I think you'll like what you see. We get to see a few clips of The Major (Scarlett Johansson) battling the Hexapod tank.

Director Rupert Sanders definitely got the visual style down; the movie looks beautiful. Hopefully, he was able to actually pull off a great story to go along with the stunning look.

Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, GHOST IN THE SHELL follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic¹s advancements in cyber technology.

Ghost in the Shell also stars Michael Pitt, Juliette Binoche, “Beat” Takeshi Kitano, Michael Wincott, and Pilou Asbæk. It's set to be released in theaters on March 31, 2017.

First Official Photos of Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft in TOMB RAIDER and Plot Synopsis

Thanks to Vanity Fair, we have our first official look at Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider film, and I think she looks great in the role! She's one of the main reasons why I'm excited about this movie. There are three photos here for you to check out. We previously saw some images of her on the set of the film, and as you can see, she's sporting the look inspired by the 2013 video game reboot. When talking about taking on this iconic role, the actress said:

"When I was asked to take on this role I got really excited—Lara Croft is a truly iconic character.  I think people can identify with her for lots of different reasons, but for me I very much see her as a model for many young women. She’s trying to carve out her place in the world and connect her future with her past. She also has a fantastic mix of traits—tough, smart, vulnerable, plus she’s kick ass! She is also uniquely different to other characters I have taken on previously. It's a lot of fun trying to get into Lara’s head and the challenge of getting to grips with such a physical role is an element of this project that I find an absolute thrill."

Producer Graham King went on to talk about what Vikander brings to the role and about the story a bit saying:

“Alicia Vikander brings tremendous depth and vulnerability to this character, which is every bit as important as Lara Croft’s fierce strength, determination, and physicality. Our film takes Lara from her early origins, to the physical and emotional challenges through which she ultimately becomes the Tomb Raider. It’s a complex character, requiring a range of elements and Alicia brings all of that together brilliantly in her portrayal.”

The film will follow Lara on her first expedition in which she will finish her father's research and uncover ancient secrets in order to clear his disgraced name. It was previously revealed that Croft’s father, Lord Richard Croft, is "a key figure in the Raider mythos and is an aristocrat and archeologist." Here's the official plot synopsis that was released:

“Seven years after the disappearance of her father, 21-year-old Lara has refused to take the reins of his global business empire, instead working as a bike courier in London while taking college classes. Eventually she becomes inspired to investigate her father’s disappearance and travels to his last-known location: a tomb on an island somewhere off the coast of Japan. Suddenly, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Lara, who—against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit—must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown. If she survives this perilous adventure, it could be the making of her, earning her the name Tomb Raider.”

The Wire's Dominic West is set to play Croft's father and Walton Goggins is set to play the villain. Tomb Raider is being directed by Roar Uthaugh and is set to be released on March 16th, 2018.

VENOM Will Reportedly Be an R-Rated Movie That Launches a Cinematic Universe

$

0

While Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios are sharing Spider-Man, Sony is developing a whole other separate Marvel Cinematic Universe with Venom, Silver Sable, Black Cat, and I'm sure there will be more films announced in the near future. Sony apparently owns the rights to 900 Marvel characters, and they are looking to cash in on them.

According to Collider, this separate cinematic universe will be launched with Venom, and that film is apparently being planned as an R-rated movie! I think fans could totally get behind an R-rated Venom film, especially if it leads to an R-rated Carnage movie! They can't have a cinematic universe with Venom and not Carnage!

We all knew that films like Deadpool and Logan would help pave the way for R-rated comic book movies, but we also know it's not the rating that makes a film good or bad! It's the story and script! So hopefully they are able to develop those properly. It's going to be interesting to see if they can pull this off without the help of Marvel unless Marvel is quietly helping them behind the scenes.

It was previously reported that the script for Venom is being written by Dante Harper (Alien: Covenant), and Alex Kurtzman is also attached to direct. The film even has a release date of October 5, 2018. The Black Cat and Silver Sable movie is being written by Thor: Ragnarok writer Chris Yost.

I really hope that Sony Pictures can actually pull this off! It's just so weird that we'll be seeing all of this happen without Spider-Man. Not sure how that's going to work, but we'll find out! What do you all think about the possibility of seeing an R-rated Venom film?
