Nerds of Nostalgia: Ep. 61 — The Cannonball Run (Live!)

Claymation Video Imagines How Gaston and LeFou Met Before BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

How did Gaston, the arrogant blowhard from Beauty and the Beast, originally meet up with his pipsqueak sidekick LeFou? According to 12-year-old writer Robert Nelson, it went a little something like this:

Not bad for a 12-year-old! THR says Nelson was part of an art project between Disney, a collective called Tongal, and a group called Young Storytellers that teamed creative young artists with mentors to create short films inspired by Beauty and the Beast. LeFouston was Robert's entry, which was animated by Tongal creator Kevin Ulrich and has music by Trevor Gomes. It's always cool to see kids have a chance to show off their creativity, so props to Disney and these other organizations for giving them an opportunity. You can read more about the initiative at THR.

Robert Rodriguez Set to Direct The ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK Remake

Sin City director Robert Rodriguez has been brought on to helm 20th Century Fox's remake of John Carpenter's 1981 classic, Escape From New York. This seems like the type of movie that Rodriguez would want to jump in and make as it fits his style.

I'm not really keen on the fact that Escape From New York is getting the remake treatment, but we all knew it was coming. I guess Rodriguez is a decent enough director to come in and attempt to do something better than what Carpenter did.

Carpenter is on board to executive produce the project so the film obviously has his blessing, but why in the hell can't they come up with some new and original awesome movie shit! I hate that this is road Hollywood has gone down. At least Netflix is taking chances on the original movies that Hollywood is passing on.

The original movie was set in a futuristic 1997. Kurt Russell starred in the film as Snake Plissken, a badass former special forces operative and con who is conscripted to rescue the President of the United States after Air Force One crashes in New York, which has been transformed into a maximum security prison. Plissken is given 22 hours to liberate the president and a tape he carries that holds the key to peace. If he doesn't pull it off... he'll explode.

If you're curious about what the new film will entail, some rumored story details leaked a few months ago. You can read that here.

Rodriguez is currently directing James Cameron's Battle Angel, and I assume Escape From New York will be his next project. Is anyone excited about this Escape From New York remake or the fact that Rodriguez is directing?

The Most Terrible Things Wolverine Has Ever Done - Video Breakdown

Wolverine is one of the best and most insane comic book characters ever created. Most people are only familiar with his Hugh Jackman's movie version, but the character has a long, brutal comic book history that a lot of people aren't familiar with. Wolverine has done some pretty jacked-up things in the comics, and Looper has made a video list that breaks down the most terrible things he's ever done.

Wolverine. Logan. James Howlett. Whatever you call him, the facts remain the same: Wolverine is the best there is at what he does — and what he does usually isn't very nice. But just how big a jerk is he in the comics? Here's a look at the most terrible things Wolverine has ever done...

If you're a fan of Wolverine, this video is definitely worth your time to watch.

Po-Zu has revealed their latest addition to their Star Wars shoe and boot collection. These boots are inspired by the Stormtroopers of the First Order from The Force Awakens. We've previously revealed footwear inspired by ReyPoe Dameron, Finn, and BB-8. These Stormtrooper boots make a great addition to the collection, and I'm sure this is just the first in a line of footwear inspired by the villains of the film. Here's the description released by Po-Zu:

The First Order’s infantry units wear stark white armour derived from that worn by the Republic’s clone troopers and by the Empire’s Stormtroopers. Members of this new generation of Stormtroopers are trained from birth, growing up with unit designations instead of names and fed a steady diet of First Order propaganda to ensure absolute loyalty.

Inspired by the First Order Stormtrooper boots, as featured in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

A rather perfect complement to every Stormtrooper outfit, or, possibly more chic with a pair of skinny black trousers.

The iconic boot will be available for sale to the general public from August 2017 for women’s, men’s and children.

Featuring an embossed Betaplast helmet detail, a concealed inside zip, a removable memory-foam Foot-Mattress™ in latex and cork, and a high performance grip natural rubber cup sole.

Watch This Great Ms. Marvel Fan Film Called KAMALA

I have no idea if Marvel Studios ever plans on making a Ms. Marvel film or series, but it's something that would be great to see happen one day. We have no idea what Marvel is planning after the fourth Avengers film is released, and I imagine they are going to hold off on officially revealing anything regarding their future plans until after that movie is released.

While we wait to see if Marvel will ever start developing a Ms. Marvel project, here's a solid fan made film called "Kamala" that focuses on the Kamala Khan and what it's like for her to be a teenage Muslim superhero.

The film was made on no budget so don't expect the greatest production value, but it's decently written and does a fine job telling a brief story that focuses on Kamala’s relationship with her family, dealing with life as a teenager, her powers, and faith. Check it out!

Artist Fajareka Setiawan is the creator of this fantastic piece of fan art featuring a young X-23 wearing her Wolverine costume. The piece is called "Laura Wolverine," and the look of the character in the illustration appears to be inspired the actress who played the character in Logan, Dafne Keen. I have no idea if we'll ever see the film version of X-23 sporting this costume, but I'm at least hoping that we see her get her own solo film.

The creator of the character previously talked about what he'd like to see happen in a solo film and you can read all about that here.

Review: Woody Harrelson Is Comically Crazy in WILSON

$

When I saw the trailer for the movie Wilson, I was really excited. It looked hilarious, and we all know Woody Harrelson is great. This film also stars Laura Dern and Judy Greer, two actresses I love. In other words, I was setting myself up for disappointment. I didn’t know this movie was based on a graphic novel, and had I known that, I would have prepared myself a little better. We’ve all been disappointed by graphic-novels-turned-movies in the past.

Harrelson stars as the title character in this dramedy based on the satirical graphic novel by the same name. Wilson is a lonely guy who is desperate to connect with the people around him, but he can’t quite figure out how. Wilson has absolutely no trouble speaking his mind, even to complete strangers, which often leads to uncomfortable but very funny situations. After reconnecting with his ex (Dern) and finding out he has a daughter, he attempts to make up for lost time as the family man he could have been.

It’s hard to describe the plot of this movie because the pacing is really strange. Like I said, I didn’t realize that this movie was based on a graphic novel before seeing it, but knowing that helps clear up a lot of issues I had. First of all, time is a tricky element in this movie. Days, weeks, and years all pass in about the same amount of screen time. In a graphic novel, this wouldn’t really be an issue. Each scene would act as a more independent sort of comic strip that ties loosely into a larger story. But you don’t really get that sort of separation in this movie, so the plot feels really convoluted and messy.

I think Harrelson is a fantastic actor, and he really shines as the obnoxious know-it-all whose misguided attempts to make friends and navigate through society make the audience both laugh and cringe. But more often than not, Wilson goes too far and we’re left wondering why on earth anyone even puts up with him. And he talks so much. So much. Voiceovers, monologues, even in scenes where he’s interacting with other characters, he does 90% of the talking. He’s so self-centered, he doesn’t really care that he’s ruining the lives of everyone around him. Sometimes I felt bad for him because he’s so ignorant, but other times I just wanted to punch him in the face.

So while I really wanted to like this movie, it turned out to be just okay. Wilson was at his best when he was delivering quippy one-liners, which makes sense because they were originally written as punchlines to comic strips. The graphic novel looks great, however, and I will be scouring my library for a copy as soon as possible.

There's a new celebrity Dungeons & Dragons series CelebriD&D streaming on Nerdist and Geek & Sundry's Alpha. The premiere episode features Joe Manganiello (True Blood), and we've provided the first seven minutes of the series for you to watch below. The actor is actually really into and is apparently a big fan of the game! Manganiello’s character is named Arkhan the Cruel. He's is a 5th level Dragonborn Paladin with a Medusa head in a bag and a battleaxe named "Bonecleaver". Here are the details on the show:

Celebrities… They’re just like us. Many of them grew up playing role-playing games, and even remain avid fans and participants to this day. While excelling in their careers, they’ve put their love for imaginary sword-wielding and potion-making on hold… until now. CelebriD&D puts D&D-playing celebrities into a small, mini-campaign where they are paired with some of the best role-players in the world. The 45-minute premiere episode features Joe Manganiello (True Blood, Magic Mike XXL, One Tree Hill), who has played D&D since childhood and still plays to this day. His episode will air on Alpha on Thursday, March 23 at 6 am Pacific (9 am Eastern), with additional episodes to be announced at a later date.
In this first episode, Manganiello joins forces with Geek & Sundry’s Critical Role cast members Matthew Mercer (Dungeon Master), Marisha Ray, and Taliesin Jaffe along with Nerdist's Dan Casey and Jessica Chobot on a mission of life and death as they enter an abandoned temple in search of an ancient relic. Spells are cast, damage is done, and more than a few hit points are lost; the group emerges worse for the wear, but with an epic story to tell. Did the party acquire the artifact? At what cost? Watch this tale of heroism, and laugh along with Manganiello and his adventuring party on projectalpha.com to find out.

D&D looks like it would be a ton of fun. I've never played, but if I can find a group of people to play with I might have to check it out!

get-your-drink-on-with-this-zelda-hydration-nes-cartridge-with-straw1

I have a lot of fond memories of playing the original Zelda game on the classic NES system. Especially that time my friend forgot to press the reset button on the NES console to save the game when we were on the verge of finally beating it!

I loved the game's signature gold cartridge and now that cartridge is being released a "Hydration Cartridge" that comes complete with a straw to drink whatever energy beverage your heart desires.

The Zelda Hydration Cartridge w/Straw is currently available to purchase at ThinkGeek for $19.99. This is the description that came along with the item:

Link has, quite literally, always been transparent about what he is drinking. Those bottles are clear - we don't doubt that when he is saying he's drinking a red potion that it is exactly what he is drinking. Sometimes we need a little nip for relaxation at the end of a long week of mowing grass for rupees, and we don't want to be quite as transparent about what's in ours.

The Zelda Hydration Cartridge w/ Straw features the original NES classic gold cartridge repurposed for all your drinky needs. Take a swig of your favorite drink, or, if you feel so inclined, use the included straw. Please drink potions responsibly.

A third new Spider-Man: Homecoming poster has surfaced online! This one features the web-slinger hanging off a New York highway sign pointing to the direction of Peter Parker's hometown of Queens.

I also included another poster below that you may have missed that shows Spider-Man hanging off the side of Tony Stark's Avengers Tower. As you can see, he's holding on to the giant Avengers logo.

With all of these posters being released, I can't help but think that Marvel is leading up to the launch of a new trailer soon! I hope so! I can't wait to see some more footage from this incredibly fun-looking Spider-Man movie!

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.

Jon Watts is directing the film, and it has a strong cast that also includes Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Donald Glover, JacobBatalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Marisa Tomei, and Robert Downey Jr.

Alright, This New Full Trailer for JUSTICE LEAUGE is Pretty Damn Cool!2

The past few days Warner Bros. has been leading up to the new full trailer for Justice League with brief little character promo spots and posters. That trailer has finally landed online and I hate that it's so damn awesome because now I'm actually really excited about the movie!

Warner Bros. always puts together great trailers for their films to get fans pumped up. The Man of Steel and Batman v Superman trailers were all really great and exciting, but as you know, the films ended up disappointing a lot of fans.

That being said, it's ok to be excited about movies! We can't help if we like what we see, and watching the Justice League team come together and fight alongside each other in this trailer is incredibly cool! Especially Aquaman riding on the Batmobile while Batman is racing into the heat of battle!

Will the film be good? That has yet to be determined, but it certainly looks like it's going to be a blast! I also just want to point out that Superman isn't in the trailer. I have a feeling that's a reveal that will be held off on until the movie is actually released.

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes — Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash -— it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Justice League hits theaters on November 17th, now watch the trailer and tell us what you think!

The Evolution of POWER RANGERS Costumes Over the Years - Infographic

The only Power Rangers series I ever watched was the original series. I haven't seen any of the other Power Rangers series and didn't realize there were so many different versions with different costume designs! Well, thanks to HalloweenCostumes.com, we have an infographic that takes us through the evolution of all the costume designs and breaks them down for us.

It’s Morphin Time! The Power Rangers are back in theaters for the first time in over twenty years and they’ve brought a new look with them. The latest version of the Rangers will feature an all-new cast with more futuristic uniforms and Zords, but will also include some familiar faces. Power Rangers is a reboot that will feature the original Rangers and other characters from the first Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series that debuted in the US in 1993.
In a world where reboots have been more prominent, it makes sense that Power Rangers would get the opportunity to reuse characters and elements from the original series. One of the facts people may not realize is that Power Rangers itself actually reuses footage from the Japanese tokusatu Super Sentai. For the most part, scenes featuring the English-speaking actors were spliced with fight scenes from its Sentai source. Each season of Power Rangers is paired with a different season of Super Sentai, which explains why there are so many different uniforms as they had to match with the source. Being that Power Rangers is in its 24th season (with a 25th confirmed), there have been quite a few different uniforms over the years. Check them all out in our infographic below!

The History Channel is Developing a New Anthology Series About U.S. Presidents Called THE COMMANDERS

$

0

If you're a history buff like I am, or if you're just interested in learning more about U.S. Presidents of the past, you're gonna want to watch this new series that The History Channel is developing. It's called The Commanders, and it's an anthology series that "will dramatize the biggest moments in American history and those that served as commander-in-chief."

The limited series is said to range from four to ten hours long and it will focus on presidents including Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan, Theodore Roosevelt, James Madison, and Thomas Jefferson. According to THR, History Channel is also internally developing projects on George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Dwight Eisenhower.

The stories that the network plans on telling come from a collection of books that they have optioned including The Breach: Inside the Impeachment and Trial of William Jefferson Clinton by Peter BakerTheodore Rex by Edmund MorrisThomas Jefferson and the Tripoli Pirates by Brian Kilmeade, and The Invisible Bridge: The Fall of Nixon and the Rise of Reagan by Rick Perlstein.

History president and general manager Jana Bennett had this to say about the series in a statement:

"From the contemporary history of Clinton's impeachment and its lasting impact on the nation's political landscape and Reagan's influence that defined the Republican Party for generations, to Jefferson’s creation of the military might of the U.S. Marines — these defining stories forged our nation. The Commanders would bring history to life and speak to the crises we face in modern times."

The report goes on to give us a breakdown of each of the projects that are in development for The Commanders anthology. They include:

The Breach: Inside the Impeachment of Bill Clinton
Based on Peter Baker's New York Times best-seller comes a political thriller that would bring viewers behind the scenes of an event unique in modern American history: the impeachment of an elected president. Featuring a who's who of contemporary modern political figures, the project would go into Republican and Democratic war rooms, revealing the infighting among the president's advisers; the secret back-channel negotiations between the White House and Congress; Clinton’s affair with Monica Lewinsky; and the manner in which Clinton, his family and his political opponents all dealt with the fallout. The series would chronicle how Washington became lost in the breach of its own partisan impulses, an event that many argue has defined the political landscape today. A+E Studios will produce in association with Cutler Productions. Cutler (Nashville, The War Room) serves as executive producer, writer and director, with David K. Israel also serving as a writer.
Rise of Reagan
In the wake of economic decline and international tumult, a former actor and California governor named Ronald Reagan shook up the political world when he did the unthinkable, running against sitting Republican President Gerald Ford in a campaign that would ultimately ignite the “Reagan Revolution.” As president, Reagan redefined the Republican Party and shaped the course of American conservatism. A+E Studios will produce the project based on The Invisible Bridge: The Fall of Nixon and the Rise of Reagan by Rick Perlstein, who serves as consultant. Bill Haber (Rizzoli & Isles) is on board to executive produce the project, which was written by Cyrus Nowrasteh, author of The Day Reagan Was Shot.
Alliance
The drama takes the viewer inside the summits held by Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin as they strategize the campaign to win World War II. While creating the battle lines for the Cold War, Churchill and FDR realize the next great global threat is in the room negotiating with them. From Bad Wolf, the series is based on Alliance: The Inside Story of How Roosevelt, Stalin and Churchill Won One War and Began Another by Jonathan Fenby, and is written and executive produced by three-time BAFTA Award nominee Stephen Butchard (The Last Kingdom). Julie Gardner, David Attwood and Martin Davidson also serve as executive producers.
Theodore Rex
In the aftermath of the assassination of President William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt rose to power as the youngest-ever chief executive of the United States. A complex and dynamic leader, Roosevelt was a man who lived many lives. From a life of East Coast privilege to Rough Rider out West, to police commissioner and governor of New York and eventually U.S. president, Roosevelt would become a trust-buster who battled with JP Morgan, a big-game hunter turned conservationist and ultimately a Nobel Prize winner. Written by Matthew Sand (Deepwater Horizon) and based on the New York Times best-selling book of the same name by Pulitzer Prize winner Edmund Morris, the show is produced by A+E Studios in association, with Critical Content’s Tom Forman, Andrew Marcus and Ray Ricord attached as exec producers.
Thomas Jefferson and the Tripoli Pirates
With America’s merchant ships under attack, its citizens being held hostage and the U.S. Naval fleet sold off to help pay the debts from the War of Independence, President Thomas Jefferson’s decision to wage war against the Barbary Coast Pirates would transform not only the American military, but the future prosperity of the U.S. Based on Thomas Jefferson and the Tripoli Pirates: The Forgotten War That Changed American History, the New York Times best-selling book by Brian Kilmeade and Don Yaeger, this story would chart Jefferson's refusal to back down against the aggression of the Barbary Pirates and tell the story of his domestic battles to get backing for foreign intervention and to build a naval force, which led to the creation of the Marines. Their defeat of the pirates on the shores of Tripoli redefined American foreign policy for the two centuries that followed. From Thinkfactory Media, Leslie Greif will exec produce and Kilmeade will co-executive produce. Stephen J. Rivele will pen the script.
War of 1812
A few decades after securing independence, the fledgling United States, led by President James Madison, was once again pulled into battle with Great Britain and its Canadian and Native American allies. It was a fierce battle for control of territory and freedom of the seas that included the burning of the White House, and was the last large-scale attempt by the Native American nations to maintain power by forming an alliance with the British, which led to more than 100 treaties when the war ended. The drama hails from A+E Studios and creator and writer Michael Hirst (Vikings).

I'm super excited about this! The History Channel has been developing quality scripted TV programming with solid production value, and a series like this will be filled with intriguing stories that will make for great entertainment.
