New STRANGER THINGS Season 2 Promo Image Is Inspired by THE MATRIX

new-stranger-things-season-2-promo-image-is-inspired-by-the-matrix4

If you already weren't excited enough for Stranger Things season two after that awesome Super Bowl promo teaser that was released yesterday, here's a teaser image that is sure to up the excitement. As you can see, it's a Matrix-inspired Stranger Things image. I have no idea if this is real or fan-made, but it was posted by actor Matthew Modine on Twitter. He played Dr. Martin Brenner in the first season of the show. The image came only with the hashtag #StrangerThingsSeason2.

I did a search online to see if I could find any fan art that matches it, but this image posted by Modine is the only thing I could find. I doubt The Matrix will play into the continuation of the story featuring Will, Dusty, Eleven, Nancy, Steve, and the rest of the gang. The Matrix didn't even come around until the late '90s, and the second season is set in 1984.

Regardless if this is a fan poster or legit, it's still a fun image for fans to enjoy. Stranger Things Season 2 is set to premiere on Halloween, so plan accordingly!

Documentary BEING BATMAN Looks Into the Mind of a Guy Who Lives the Dark Knight Persona

The Brampton Batman is a man who literally lives The Dark Knight persona. Using a mixture of empathy and fandom, he's managed to take personal loss and channel it into the Dark Knight persona in an attempt to do some good in the world. If you happen to live in Ontario, perhaps you'll see him around, and you'll definitely know who he is seeing as he's the only dude rolling around in a Batmobile on a regular basis!

This documentary blew my mind. The amount of Batman memorabilia, ninja weapons, and money he's put into this thing is incredible...and it's also paid off! The Brampton Batman has actually fought real crime with his abilities and has become a symbol for those who wish to do good in the world. Check out him in action below!

The Mind-Numbingly Derivative SHREK Gets an Honest Trailer

Shrek was released my junior year of high school and was inexplicably popular with the teenage set. I, however, fucking hated it, and this fact caused actual arguments with my peers. Seriously. They found it offensive that I disliked it, even when I laid out my very astute critique. It only made me hate the movie more.

So I was super gratified when this turned up in my inbox. Sure it has taken the wider culture 16 years to catch up to me (good hell, I’m old), but finally, Screen Junkies has made an Honest Trailer for the film that lays out a lot of my reasons for hating the film when it was released, give or take a few. Watch the Honest Trailer to learn most of the reasons why Shrek is terrible, and then spend the rest of the day cursing me (and the Screen Junkies crew) for getting Smashmouth’s All-Star stuck in your head, just like it’s the early aughts.

Former Blink-182 Member Tom DeLonge Will Make His Directorial Debut With STRANGE TIMES

$

Former Blink-182 member Tom DeLonge is getting into filmmaking, and he's already set up a directing gig for his first feature film. It's called Strange Times, and it's a sci-fi film that centers on "a rebellious group of San Diego skateboarders who take it upon themselves to investigate extreme paranormal activity around town, only to embark on an adventure that they could have never imagined."

Sounds like it could be a fun movie! It definitely seems like a story I'd enjoy watching. Judging from the title and brief plot summary, it sounds like it may have found its inspiration from the Netflix series Stranger Things, but it's based on an existing franchise created by DeLonge, which includes a graphic novel, a YA book trilogy, and a fringe website.

DeLonge co-wrote the script for the film with Ben Kull. They both collaborated on an animated short film called "Poet Anderson: The Dream Walker," which you can watch the trailer for below. It actually looks really good! When talking about his inspiration behind Strange Times, DeLonge said:

"I grew up in Southern California as a disaffected young skateboarder who broke the occasional law or five, and I was always dreaming about the world around me, obsessively looking for the more unusual and imaginative experiences that life has to offer. That’s the inspiration behind Strange Times, which is about the tribe of broken youth and the restless spirit that inspired me to form Blink-182 and seek out adventure."

DeLonge's band, Angels & Airwaves, will also record new and original music for the film, which is scheduled to start production in the fall.

New Details on Nebula, Mantis, and Ego the Living Planet in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2

We have some new details about a few of the characters that we'll be seeing in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The info comes from CB, who had a chance to visit the set of the film where they learned all kinds of things.

They had the chance to talk to several people working on the film, and they learned some new information involving Nebula (Karen Gillan) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) and what their characters are up to in the film. They also got some intel regarding the look of Ego the Living Planet (Kurt Russell). Not the human form of the planet, but the actual planet.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige opened up about Nebula's role in the sequel, saying:

"She cut her own hand off, jumped onto a ship, and flew away. She comes back into the story relatively early on. In fact, we realize that the payment for the mission that the Guardians have done on Sovereign is to get Nebula."

He then offered a little background of what happened to her after she ran off in the first film:

"The Sovereign has captured Nebula, and are doing sort of a prisoner, are exchanging her for the services of the Guardians helping them, and they want to take Nebula back to Xandar, to have her, to have her arrested. Things go awry on that journey, and she becomes a much bigger player in the film than she was in the first one."

Feige shared more about Nebula's relationship with her sister Gamora, explaining:

"You explore that dynamic between them as sisters, as adopted sisters who both clearly were raised in less than ideal circumstances by Thanos, and it’s sort of Nebula’s deciding does she want to kill Gamora or is she going to set aside this sort of internal rage within her. And she does spend some time teaming up with Taserface for much of the movie too."

Nebula is one of my favorite characters from this franchise, and I'm excited that Gunn is going to explore her character more. Then there's the new addition of Mantis, whom I'm looking forward to seeing. When talking about her character and the actress who plays her, Feige said:

"Pom Klementieff is really amazing and is really unique. She auditioned for the part many, many times, along with many, many other people, because James [Gunn] was doing something very unique with Mantis, who has never really encountered other people and other humans before, humanoids before, and makes Drax look like the most world-savvy person there is, and it’s a tough thing to do and to be endearing, and she’s pretty amazing at it. She comes into the story along with the Kurt Russell character, and doesn’t know the other characters and doesn’t know much of the world, and there is a, talking about the bondings between characters, she and Drax spend a lot of time together in this story as well."

It turns out that the Mantis in the film won't necessarily be the same Mantis from the comics, as Gunn is said to have started a clean slate with his version of the character. Feige saidys:

"Mantis in the comics is a highly complicated, weird character, whose history makes little sense. I’m assuming we’re sort of clean-slating it here with this version of Mantis, or is the celestial Madonna stuff in play? Those specifics are not in play, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less complicated and weird."

Everything that I've seen of the character so far has been playful and fun, so I'm looking forward to seeing where they take her. As for Ego the Living Planet, his involvement is definitely going to be one of the stranger elements of the film. He's Star-Lord's dad who is an actual planet that can take human form. Fans got to see his Kurt Russell human form at Comic-Con last year, but it hasn't been released to the public yet. Some press got to see what the actual planet would look like. It was pointed out to them that its design resembled the "dreamy, other-worldly imagery of the album covers that were created by artist Roger Dean created for Yes — the English rock band." Executive producer Jonathan Schwartz added:

"A hundred percent. The first Guardians has a really colorful, pulpy sensibility that I think we're pushing further, in a much cooler direction in this movie. I think for the designs for this planet play into that tradition in a really cool way. It is about establishing a big, beautiful sci-fi world that's not like anything you've ever seen before - which I'm sure something you guys here on every set visit that you do. But we really mean it."

I'm really curious to see for myself what Ego the Living Planet will look like, but I'll just have to wait and see when Marvel decides to make that reveal. Hell, with something like that we might just have to wait for the movie to come out.

Will Turner Is Looking a Little Cursed in Image From PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES

Will Turner is back and looking a little cursed in this latest image (via Coming Soon) from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Of course, after the events of Dead Man's Chest, we know that Will is cursed to roam the seven seas for eternity and granted one day on earth every 10 years. Looks like he picked a hell of a day to come back!

It's weird how Orlando Bloom started off as the hero of this franchise and now almost feels like an afterthought in the shadow of Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow and Keira Knightly's Elizabeth Turner! It's also crazy to think it's been six years since we've seen a film in this franchise! I'm excited to see how different this film looks with current CGI technology, as well as a continuation of the original trilogy after Stranger Tides! Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will be in theaters May 26th.

Following last night's awesome Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Super Bowl spot, we now have a new poster for the film with the names of the Guardians colorfully sketched out on cassette tapes. We also have a collection of new photos from the film that are basically official stills from the most recent trailer, which gave us our first look at Elizabeth Debicki as the villain Ayesha and Karen Gillan's Nebula back in action. The one main character that hasn't been officially revealed yet is Kurt Russell's Ego the Living Planet. Hell, they didn't even include a graphic with his name on the poster! They made sure his tape was turned around.

Set to the backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

The movie also stars Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, and Pom Klementieff as Mantis. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is set to be released on May 5th.

Did You Know BABY DRIVER Star Ansel Elgort Has a DJ Alter Ego?

$

If you're not familiar with the work of Ansel Elgort (The Divergent Series, The Fault in Our Stars), you will be soon enough. He's playing the title character in Edgar Wright's upcoming movie Baby Driver and also stars in a film called Billionaire Boys Club alongside Taron Egerton, Kevin Spacey, Emma Roberts, and more. But did you know he's a musician who also goes by the name DJ Ansolo?

Elgort's been in the music biz since 2013, but Vulture points us to the recently-released video for his new song "Thief." He has a record deal with Island Records and presumably this song is the first single from a forthcoming album:

I met Elgort on the set of the Carrie remake back in 2012, where he and his co-stars serenaded a group of journalists between takes. I thought they were just goofing around, and had no idea Elgort was actually a legit musician. If you already knew about his music career, carry on. This is for those who, like me, were clueless about the existence of DJ Ansolo. Fingers crossed he releases a Will Smith-esque tie-in song with Baby Driver when the movie drops in August.

Video Essay: See Michael Mann's Influences on Christopher Nolan's THE DARK KNIGHT

If you'd seen any of Michael Mann's filmography beforehand, it should have been pretty obvious back in 2008 that the director had a major influence on Christopher Nolan's modern superhero masterpiece The Dark Knight. Nolan took a lot of his visuals from Heat, Mann's bank robbery classic, as well as L.A. Takedown (Mann's made-for-TV precursor to Heat), and the two clearly have a mutual respect since Nolan hosted a Q&A about Heat with Mann and stars Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. Joey had a chance to attend that Q&A, and you can read all about it and see videos from it right here.

Now Glass Distortion (via /Film) has put together a cool video essay showing Nolan's The Dark Knight side-by-side with the moments from Mann's films that inspired it. You'll see some clear parallels between the movies' bank heists, as well as similarities between the iconic De Niro/Pacino diner scene and the Batman/Joker interrogation and more. Check it out:

Sony Buys /REDDOOR Spec Script, a Supernatural Thriller About a Deadly Virtual Game

Sony seems a little hard up for franchises right now. As Disney dominates the film landscape, Warner Bros. struggles to keep up with its DCEU, Fantastic Beasts, and LEGO movies, Universal keeps cruising along with Fast & Furious films, and even the battered Paramount chugs ahead with more Transformers sequels, Sony has fallen behind in the IP race. Sure, The Dark Tower might succeed, but they're sharing Spider-Man with Marvel Studios and they need a big hit of their own. Now they're looking in an unexpected place for a potential new franchise: spec scripts.

Deadline reports that the studio has just picked up /reddoor, a supernatural thriller written by Teddy Tenenbaum and Minsun Park that follows "a young journalist who discovers the new app game he is reviewing has the ability to kill the player once they’ve entered the game world." It's being likened to The Ring and Steven Spielberg's upcoming Ready Player One, which could be a potent combination if pulled off correctly. We'll have to wait and see what talent the studio ends up attaching to this one, but for gamers looking for a new movie about the horrors of virtual reality, this could be one to watch out for.

Earthling Cinema Explores the "Hidden Meaning" in Disney's ALADDIN

$

It's tough to pick my favorite of the Disney animated classics because there are so many contenders to choose from, but if I had to only pick one, I think it'd be Aladdin. Just thinking about it makes me sad all over again about the fact that we won't ever see another new Robin Williams performance, but looking on the brighter side, Earthling Cinema is back with a new video analyzing the hidden meaning in the 1992 movie. As usual, there are some pretty goofy observations in here alongside a few legitimate ones I hadn't really thought about before, like the larger implications of the film's characters constantly changing their identities.

Warning to those who care: there's some NSFW language ahead.

New Plot Details Revealed for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 and Cool Behind-the-Scenes Photos

$

I have a feeling we're going to see a bunch of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 news today. After that Super Bowl trailer was released, the floodgates opened with a bunch of new info for the film thanks to various sites who were invited to the set.

We'll start the day off with some new plot details and a collection of behind-the-scenes photos from the set of the film. They feature several members of the cast shooting certain action-packed scenes, some of which you might recognize from the trailers we've seen. In the photos we get to see director James Gunn directing his team of characters that include Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Drax (Dave Bautista), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Nebula (Karen Gillan), and Yondu (Michael Rooker).

As far as the plot details, these go well beyond the official plot summary, but there are no big spoilers to worry about. Just some general plot information regarding some characters. But if you don't want to know anything, then obviously don't read ahead. The following info comes from /Film (via:CBM):

  • The sequel starts 3 months later after the first.
  • The Guardians are a new team/faction out in the galaxy doing good deeds and services...but for a price.  Case in point, they go to save The Sovereign People from an inter-dimensional monster who's trying to devour their planet's power source.  To "pay" the Guardians, The Sovereign People have captured Nebula and are willing to exchange her if Star-Lord and co. take care of the beast.
  • The Guardians want to take Nebula to the planet Xandar and turn her over to the Nova Corps. but of course, things go awry and that journey becomes very complicated according to James Gunn.
  • As for their defeat of the inter-dimensional monster, it seems Rocket didn't view Nebula as suitable payment and stole a few of the planet's power source/batteries which pisses of The Sovereign People and their leader Ayesha.  In response, she hired The Ravagers to go after The Guardians and retrieve the batteries.
  • The Sovereign are genetically created beings who are sticklers for proper decorum and etiquette. Rocket's theft deeply offends them and it seems they'll go to any length to have their honor restored.
  • Yondu tries to convince The Ravagers not to go after Quill and the restof the Guardians but they don't listen to him. With Yondu not going after Quill after not handing over the "orb" at the end of the first film and now speaking against taking the job from Ayesha, Taserface leads a rebellion and overthrows Yondu as leader of The Ravagers.
  • The group will be split up early on in the movie and the question the film presents to the audience becomes IF and WHEN will they reunite.
  • The two main villains are Ayesha and Taserface, who Kevin Feige describes as, "less grandiose in their ambitions than [Ronan]."
  • With the Guardian's legend grown to sizable proportions following their defeat of Ronan and Peter managing to hold and Infinity Stone and walk away unscathed, word eventually reaches Ego, who comes looking for his son. It seems he's been looking for Peter for a long time after Yondu failed to deliver him.
  • Traveling with Ego is his personal attendant, Mantis. She's described as very naive, making Drax look like a worldly-scholar in comparison.
  • There was one more Guardian included in Gunn's original treatment for the sequel but was ultimately cut during script revisions.  However, Gunn stated that the character would likely appear in a future Guardians installment.

This looks like it would have been an incredibly fun set to play around on! Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2017.

First Photos of Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft Shooting TOMB RAIDER

I was excited to hear that Ex Machina star Alicia Vikander was going to play Lara Croft in the new Tomb Raider movie. She's become one of my favorite actresses working today because she's extremely talented.

Vikander currently shooting Tomb Raider, and thanks to some photos that have surfaced from the set, we have our first look at the actress as Croft. She looks freakin' great in the role! As you can see, the outfit she's wearing is reminiscent of the one we have seen in the video game reboot, which the film is inspired by.

The film follows Lara Croft as she sets out on her first expedition to finish her father's research and uncover ancient secrets in order to clear his disgraced name.
Croft’s father, Lord Richard Croft, is a key figure in the Raider mythos and is an aristocrat and archeologist.

The Wire's Dominic West is set to play Croft's father and Walton Goggins is set to play the villain. Tomb Raider is being directed by Roar Uthaugh and the film is set to be released on March 16th, 2018. I can't wait to see an official image of the Vikander as Croft, but until then, these will have to do.

The long-awaited second season of Attack On Titan is finally going to be released this year! Last month we got our first trailer for the upcoming season, and it was enough to get fans exploding with excitement. This next season looks so badass!

Funimation has recently revealed a new poster for the series and revealed that the official release date will be April 1st, 2017. Before this announcement, we only knew that it would be released in April. Hopefully, this isn't a big April Fools' Day joke! I'd be pissed if April first rolled around and fans were met with a big April Fools' prank. The also offered an official synopsis for season two, which you can read here:

“Eren Jaeger swore to wipe out every last Titan, but in a battle for his life he wound up becoming the thing he hates most. With his new powers, he fights for humanity's freedom facing the monsters that threaten his home. After a bittersweet victory against the Female Titan, Eren finds no time to rest—a horde of Titans is approaching Wall Rose and the battle for humanity continues!”

Expectations are high and fans are expecting great things from season two. Hopefully it delivers the goods!

A video has surfaced of some of the kids from Stranger Things watching the Stranger Things Season 2 Super Bowl spot. They just explode with extremely excited reactions as the commercial plays out. Hell, their reactions are probably a lot like our own! I love the end of the video when they all start jumping down and someone in the group starts singing an a cappella version of the Stranger Things theme song. THE LINE KINGS Is a Movie About Waiting in Line for STAR WARS

$
0
0

The thought of massive crowds of excited movie fans is perhaps more attached to Star Wars than any other current film franchise. There are certainly franchises that have a more storied history, but you don't exactly see James Bond fans dressing up and waiting for days in line for each new film. The concept of Star Wars fans waiting in line has even gotten the late night treatment in an iconic late night sketch from Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. (The "which of these buttons calls your parents to pick you up?" zinger is still hilarious.)

Now Variety reports that there's going to be a movie that's explicitly about waiting in line to see a Star Wars movie. It's called The Line Kings and is written by Billy Riback and Steve Rubin and directed by Tony Dow (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Babylon 5).

The Line Kings will focus on a group of rabid Star Wars fans who camp out for four days on Hollywood Boulevard, in front of the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre after Disney announces that the fans who are first in line after four days will win walk-on roles in the next film in the series — leading to a battle royale between two fan groups determined to be first.

Star Wars fandom already has at least two films dedicated to it that I can think of off the top of my head — Fanboys and 5-25-77 — so it looks like it's about to get a third. It's probably a bit too early to pass judgment about the movie at this point, but what do you all think about the idea for The Line Kings?
