THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE Featurette: Go Behind the Bricks With the Bat-Family

$

I went nuts for The LEGO Movie, and while I realize that's a high bar to set, I have my fingers crossed that The LEGO Batman Movie is going to at least be one of the few spin-offs that actually earns a separate story worth telling with a character audiences love. Look at Russell Brand's character in Forgetting Sarah Marshall: he worked really well in small doses, but when he had to shoulder an entire movie (Get Him to the Greek), it sort of fell apart. But because this is Batman we're talking about, he has an entire world that's already been established in pop culture, and we just get to see the LEGO-fied version of it. I can't wait to check this out when it hits theaters on February 10, 2017.

New TWILIGHT ZONE Book Will Help You Live a Better Life With Lessons From the Classic Series

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone is one of the greatest TV shows of all time. This is a series that I never get tired of watching, and I'm constantly blown away by Serling's vision of the world and where he saw it headed.

If you're a fan of The Twilight Zone there's a new book coming out that is a must have. It's called Everything I Need to Know I learned in The Twilight Zone: A Fifth-Dimension Guide to Life. It's a self-help book that uses lessons learned in the Twilight Zone universe to help you live a better life.

The book was written by Mark Dawidziak and this is the description:

Can you live your life by what The Twilight Zone has to teach you? Yes, and maybe you should. The proof is in this lighthearted collection of life lessons, ground rules, inspirational thoughts, and stirring reminders found in Rod Serling’s timeless fantasy series. Written by veteran TV critic, Mark Dawidziak, this unauthorized tribute is a celebration of the classic anthology show, but also, on another level, a kind of fifth-dimension self-help book, with each lesson supported by the morality tales told by Serling and his writers.
The notion that “it’s never too late to reinvent yourself” soars through “The Last Flight,’’ in which a World War I flier who goes forward in time and gets the chance to trade cowardice for heroism. A visit from an angel blares out the wisdom of “follow your passion” in “A Passage for Trumpet.” The meaning of “divided we fall” is driven home with dramatic results when neighbors suspect neighbors of being invading aliens in “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street.” The old maxim about never judging a book by its cover is given a tasty twist when an alien tome is translated in “To Serve Man.”

The book is currently available for pre-order on Amazon, and I've already ordered myself a copy. At a time where it seems like we are currently living in The Twilight Zone, having a book like this to help navigate through life doesn't seem like a bad idea!

Michelle Williams to Star in Jonah Hill's Directorial Debut MID-90S

I didn't realize that two time Oscar nominee Jonah Hill had directing aspirations, but he's apparently pretty far along in the development process for his first feature film. It's called Mid-90s, and Hill wrote the screenplay, which takes place in Los Angeles during the titular time period and "follows a kid as he navigates through fighting, the lures of drinking, drugs and sex while feeling all the peer pressure as he heads into his teen years." Deadline says the lead character, Stevie, learns life lessons from his skateboard buddies, which makes me feel like this movie could vaguely resemble this SNL sketch from when Hill hosted.

In any case, the only cast member currently attached to the film is Michelle Williams, herself a four-time Oscar nominee who's vying for the Best Supporting Actress statue this year for her work in Manchester By The Sea. Williams will play Stevie's mother, a single mom struggling to raise her son during a turbulent period in his life. It'll be interesting to see what kind of directing style Hill has on his own and what he might have picked up from the legendary talents he's worked with during his career so far. Williams sounds like she could play this part in her sleep, so I'm looking forward to seeing who else is cast in Mid-90s. What do you all think?

The Academy Awards are less than a month away, so depending on how determined you are, you might have enough time to catch up with all of the Best Picture nominees. Many of them are still in theaters (or returning to theaters for a limited run, like Arrival), and now editor Jacob T. Swinney has put together an elegant video tribute to this year's nominees. They include La La Land, Moonlight, Arrival, Hacksaw Ridge, Fences, Hell or High Water, Lion, Hidden Figures, and Manchester By The Sea. Which film do you think will win big on Oscar night?

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Action Figures Give Us a Look at Peter Parker's Homemade Suit

Hasbro has revealed their line of Spider-Man: Homecoming action figures. There are a couple 6-inch figures of Spidey, the villain Vulture, a Spider-Man car, and a couple playsets. The coolest thing in the collection is the Spider-Man action figure featuring Peter Parker's homemade suit. This suit has been briefly teased in Captain America: Civil War and in the trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming because apparently, we'll be getting a little backstory on Parker before he meets up with Tony Stark and gets his new suit. This is our best look yet at Spidey's early costume. I kinda dig it. It looks like it would be an easy cosplay creation!

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.

Spider-Man: Homecoming was directed by Jon Watts (Cop Car), and it opens in theaters on July 7th.

I've got some extremely amusing behind-the-scenes photos from Sam Raimi's Army of Darkness featuring Bruce Campbell testing out some of the prosthetics that were made for him. According to Stan Winston School, these photos were taken at Tony Gardner's FX studio Alterian.

If you've seen Army of Darkness, then you're familiar with the scenes that these prosthetics were used in. This movie is such an awesome and hilarious classic, and it's really cool to see some behind-the-scenes photos like this featuring some of the FX work.

ARRIVAL and STRANGER THINGS Producers Working With James Ponsoldt on New Sci-Fi Film

If, a decade ago, you would have told me that two of my absolute favorite pieces of media from 2016 would come from the guy who directed the Night at the Museum movies, I'd have said you were nuts. But it actually happened, and Shawn Levy's 21 Laps production company produced both the Oscar-nominated Arrival and the incredibly addictive Stranger Things last year. The company is now continuing its exploration of science fiction; THR reports that they've hired The Spectacular Now, The End of The Tour, and Smashed director James Ponsoldt to direct a film adaptation of Larry Niven's 1971 short story "Inconstant Moon."

This story raises the question: How would you spend your last night on Earth? When the Moon suddenly starts shining brighter, Stan and Leslie realize the sun must have gone nova and they only have a few hours until the Earth rotates into the deadly sunshine.

Ponsoldt is a terrific filmmaker, and he definitely has the skills to ground a movie with a high concept like this with relatable, flawed, dramatic human characters. He has the Tom Hanks/Emma Watson movie The Circle coming out in a couple of months, and as soon as he's done on post-production for that project, he should be able to jump full-on into this one. Dan Casey (10 Cloverfield Lane, Godforsaken, Incognito) is writing the screenplay. Looking forward to this one?

New Trailer for James Gunn's Sadistically Fun Film THE BELKO EXPERIMENT

For those of you looking forward to seeing James Gunn's upcoming sadistic new film project The Belko Experiment, we've got another trailer that teases the kind of murderous insanity that's in store for us. Gunn has a fun and twisted imagination, and I can't help but think that there's a lot more to this story than what is being revealed. If that's the case, I can't wait tot see what it is.

The story centers on a South American location of an American company called Belko. The high-rise building that 80 employees work in is mysteriously sealed off at the beginning of a day, and those employees are then ordered to kill each other or be killed themselves. As the violence escalates, the true nature of every Belko employee will be revealed.

The film has a great cast that includes Tony Goldwyn, Michael Rooker, Sean Gunn, Adria Arjona, John Gallagher Jr., John C. McGinley, David Dastmalchian, and Melonie Diaz.

Gunn wrote and produced the movie, and it was directed by Greg McLean (Wolf Creek). It's scheduled to be released in theaters on March 17, 2017. To watch the red-band trailer for the film click here.

Scott Derrickson Really Hopes the Fantastic Four Find a Place in the MCU

For those of you hoping that the Fantastic Four one day find solid footing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you can take solace in the fact that there are people in power, like Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson, who feel the same way! He spoke with ScreenRant about the franchise he would most like to see in the MCU, and in the midst of a Moon Knight response switched gears and gave us this...

“Actually, scratch that answer. Here’s my answer. My answer is this: I still have hope that Fantastic Four can be properly brought into the MCU because a lot of Doctor Strange – that’s the comment I read the most during that. I love those characters and I think that they still deserve another shot at finding a true home in the MCU. I still have hope for that. That’s my honest answer.”

With the three bombs the franchise has already had under Fox, perhaps one day the news that Marvel has once again secured the franchise rights would give audiences hope that this film can finally be done right! I honestly don't think anyone will feel that way until Fox gives up the rights, and even then it may take quite a bit of convincing by Marvel.

Personally, I just don't think there's too much room for the team in the current lineup. You have The Avengers for big stuff and street level heroes like Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Jessica Jones...and really no home for them to call their own. As much as I liked The Thing as a kid, I think they're a set of heroes that were phased out of usefulness in the wake of more exciting and useful heroes. I could be dead wrong on that, but it's just how I feel. Anyone else feel that way?

Indie Film Sensation SWISS ARMY MAN Gets a Joyous, Limited Edition Art Print

It's a common occurrence to see art prints floating around the internet for mega-popular blockbuster movies. We've posted too many to count at GeekTyrant over the years. But it's far less common that you'll see a print dedicated to an indie movie, and even less common than that to see one dedicated to an indie movie that's about a farting corpse. But artist Mark Englert and L.A.'s iam8bit teamed up to do just that with this limited edition piece paying tribute to Daniels' wonderfully bizarre Swiss Army Man, the movie that stars Paul Dano as a guy stranded on an island who befriends a constantly farting corpse played by Daniel Radcliffe. This is the same art that was featured on the film's vinyl soundtrack, but now it's being offered as a screenprint. (Click the image above to enlarge.)

This 12'' x 24'' 8-color hand-pulled print comes in a limited edition of 350, and it'll set you back $50 if you're interested in buying one. You can pre-order it now on iam8bit's website.

New X-MEN Series to Tackle Being a Mutant From a Human Perspective

$

In a move that is sure to disappoint many, Comicbook has learned that the new X-Men series will not be the action-packed mutant fight fest that we all so desperately want. Instead, the new series will follow a family who discover their child is a mutant and flee across the United States to protect him from the government. While many seem worried about how a show like that can really even tackle the Marvel universe, creator Matt Nix says it will allow viewers to explore a side of the X-Men that isn't really covered in other media...

"The movies and the comics have generally started with the X-Men and encountered the world outside from the perspective of the X-Men. This show flips that on its head, in the sense that it doesn't exclusively take place inside the world of people who are already X-Men and know that world. It's also, I'd say, a more intimate story, in the sense that's what television does well."

Intimacy is good, but this show is sounding a lot like Heroes Reborn. It also sounds like they're trying to make a show about mutants that isn't really about mutants. I understand the need to pull in a mainstream audience for success, but not fully committing one way or the other leaves open the risk of alienating both audiences.

We have a lot of shows beginning to roll out that cover the world outside of the hero universe, I can't help but shake the feeling that this show will get lost in the crowd. I guess there's no real reason to worry until we at least see a trailer, right?

See the Awesome Silhouettes of Cinematographer Roger Deakins

If you don't instantly know the name Roger Deakins, trust me — you're familiar with his work. He's arguably the best living cinematographer in the world, and responsible for jaw-dropping shots in in movies like The Shawshank Redemption, Skyfall, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, and dozens more. He's been nominated for an Oscar thirteen times but has somehow never won. That might finally change next year because he's shooting Ridley Scott's Blade Runner 2049, but we'll have to see what the other contenders are throughout the year.

In any case, H. Perry Orton of One Perfect Shot has created a video tribute to the silhouettes in Deakins' movies, and it's beautiful to behold. Man, this guy knows how to frame a freaking shot. The one of Brad Pitt being enveloped in smoke as the train comes to a stop is an all-timer.

John Suits Up in New Clip From JOHN WICK 2

John is suiting up in this extended clip from John Wick 2. If I'm not mistaken, I believe we've seen a portion of this clip before in some of the marketing, and to be honest it's not entirely interesting. It is funny to see Keanu's deadpan delivery delivers as Wick. It's like they're turning up the cheese on this one, and for some strange reason it's making it more amazing!

Terry McGinnis Has a Dope New BATMAN BEYOND Costume in the Comics

Terry McGinnis has a new look, and personally, I think it's an upgrade! Comicbook shares the news that the future Batman from Batman Beyond has changed his look for the first time since the animated series was on television. While I've always been a fan of the original look (seen below), I can't help but love the look of the new costume. For starters, it looks a lot scarier than the gimp suit nature of the original. It also has this pseudo-Nightwing costume vibe going for it that I enjoy as well!

Man, I miss the television series. What are the odds we can get a reboot on television DC?

Emilia Clarke to Star in THE BEAUTY INSIDE for X-MEN: THE NEW MUTANTS Writers

$

Looks like the Mother of Dragons has scored another headlining gig in a big screen romance. Following her work in last year's Me Before YouDeadline reports that Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke will star in The Beauty Inside, a remake of a 2015 Korean film "about a man who wakes up in a different body each day and has to stay connected to the woman he loves." Um...what now? Let's take a look at the Korean film's trailer:

From that logline, I inferred that this would be sort of a 50 First Dates sort of situation, in which the woman isn't aware that it's the same person inside all of these different identities. But I'm pretty sure that trailer makes it clear that the woman knows what's going on from the start — and what I'm really interested in is seeing her initial reaction to this bizarre revelation. Hopefully this movie at least touches on that.

The remake will be written by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, the writing duo behind 500 Days of Summer, The Spectacular Now, The Fault in Our Stars, Paper Towns, and the upcoming X-Men: The New Mutants. They have a pretty solid track record with big screen romances, so let's hope their collaboration with Khaleesi is just as memorable. Fox 2000 spent $2 million for this pitch, beating out Universal, STX, New Line, Sony, and Lionsgate in a bidding war, so they certainly have high hopes for The Beauty Inside. Hopefully Neustadter and Weber can deliver.

THE WIRE's Dominic West Will Play Lara Croft's Father in New TOMB RAIDER Movie

$

0

Dominic West, who will forever be associated with his role as Detective Jimmy McNulty on HBO's The Wire, has been cast as Lara Croft's father in Tomb Raider, the new film starring Oscar winner Alicia Vikander that went into production earlier this week.

The film follows Lara Croft as she sets out on her first expedition to finish her father's research and uncover ancient secrets in order to clear his disgraced name.
Croft’s father, Lord Richard Croft, is a key figure in the Raider mythos and is an aristocrat and archeologist. (Jon Voight played the character in the Angelina Jolie-starring Raider movies.)

I can totally see West playing an adventuring archeologist. There are a number of ways they could go with this: showing him in action in flashbacks, having him interact with Lara in present day through dreams or daydreams, have him appear only in pre-recorded video diaries that Lara studies for clues, etc. Either way, he strikes me as excellent casting, and since he's a natural born Englishman (something you never would have known if you'd just seen him as McNulty), that should align well with Vikander's posh accent.

Here's an interesting piece of trivia: the outlet also points out that this isn't the first time that West will be playing Vikander's father in a movie: he did the same thing in the 2014 war drama Testament of Youth.

Tomb Raider is being directed by Roar Uthaug and also stars Walton Goggins and Daniel Wu. It's slated for release on March 16, 2018.

And we're off! #tombraider
