Jon Hamm Offers Thoughts About Don Draper's Post-MAD MEN Fate

$

It's been a little while since Mad Men ended, and since then, I've realized that my alternate theory that maybe Peggy came up with the famous Coke commercial seems increasingly unlikely with every passing day. Series creator Matthew Weiner has basically gone on record saying that it was Don Draper's idea, and now Jon Hamm, the man who played Don himself, has also proven to hold that interpretation. In an interview Hamm did with The Rich Eisen Show, the actor spoke about what he thinks happened to his iconic character after the series finale concluded, and whether or not Don ultimately learned anything from his Zen moment at the end. Take a look:

The political climate at the moment has prevented me from writing this article for two days now, but who doesn't love Pinky And The Brain? In this audio skit done entirely by the voices of the show, Brain looks to Pinky when something seems amiss with his "Trump-bot." Brain soon realizes that he has taken a major step in accomplishing his goal to take over the world! Just hearing Brain dictate one of our President's tweets is hilarious. Listen to the skit and bash me for being a liberal shill below!

DOCTOR STRANGE 2 Director Teases "Limitless Possibilities"

When it comes to the world of Doctor Strange, anything is possible! The hero has battled Dracula as well as many other supernatural elements in the comics, and it would appear those things are on the table for the sequel! ComingSoon spoke to director Scott Derrikson who confirms as much in the quote below...

“I wouldn’t necessarily rule anything out....That’s certainly where the comics went in the ’80s but I also think that was probably the weakest era of the comics. The alternate dimensions and possibilities of the multiverse that we set up with the first film already give limitless possibilities. What I will say is that the goal would not be to underutilize that, or to create something that was less innovative than the first ‘Doctor Strange.’ The comics, especially the Lee/Ditko comics, were always pushing into unexpectedly weird places and storylines. That has continued on into the current Doctor Strange comics, which are really great. So anything’s possible with Doctor Strange, I wouldn’t rule anything out.”

The question originally was specifically aimed at the Dracula statement, and judging by Derrickson's response, I think we can rule that out as a no-go, but it does provide some interesting commentary! One of my main gripes with the first Doctor Strange film is the entire film teased the limitless nature of universes and power...and yet a bulk of the CGI magic was used to recreate the building scenes from Inception

Doctor Strange was weird and meant to be a little jarring, and I feel the first film only lightly touched on that subject. I want to see crazier stuff and storylines! I want it to feel as out there as it can be! I know you run the risk of turning audiences off, but I think avoiding that and playing it safe puts this franchise at a lower position than it deserves considering the talent Benedict Cumberbatch has lent to it. Am I completely alone in this? I want a trippy Doctor Strange!

This Video Comparison Shows How the SHREK Franchise Went Wrong

$

It can sometimes be tough to separate the original entry in a film franchise from the movies that came after it and the baggage they added to the franchise as a whole, but I think it's fair to say that most people would agree that the first Shrek movie was (and is) pretty solid. Sure, it was a little goofy, but the film was clearly paying homage to classic Disney movies and fairy tale stories in a loving way, and for the most part, it worked out. The sequels, however...that's a different story.

Editor Bora Barroso put together a video that shows the movie references of the first two Shrek films side by side with the moments from the actual movies, and it's pretty obvious that (despite a couple of small instances in the first film), the second movie is where things really start going off the rails. That's when the filmmakers stopped paying tribute to classic Disney movies and started going for random pop culture touchstones instead. The difference is night and day.

GREEN ROOM Director Jeremy Saulnier Adapting HOLD THE DARK for Netflix

$

If you haven't seen Blue Ruin and Green Room yet, I'd highly recommend checking them out so you get to know the films of writer/director Jeremy Saulnier. He's a dynamic, up-and-coming talent who's making fascinating films right now, and his newest will be heading straight to Netflix. The Calgary Herald (via /Film) reports that Saulnier will shoot Hold the Dark, a film adaptation of William Giraldi's bestselling novel, for the streaming service, and production is set to begin in Calgary starting at the end of next month.

Written with “force and precision and grace” (John Wilwol, New York Times Book Review) Hold the Dark is a “taut and unforgettable journey into the heart of darkness” (Dennis Lehane). At the start of another pitiless winter, wolves have taken three children from the remote Alaskan village of Keelut, including the six-year-old son of Medora and Vernon Slone. Wolf expert Russell Core is called in to investigate these killings and discovers an unholy truth harbored by Medora before she disappears. When her husband returns home to discover his boy dead and his wife missing, he begins a maniacal pursuit that cuts a bloody swath across the frozen landscape. With the help of a local police detective, Core attempts to find Medora before her husband does, setting in motion a deadly chain of events in this “chilling, mysterious, and completely engaging novel” (Tim O’Brien) that marks the arrival of a major American writer.

That plot description sounds very much in line with the intense movies Saulnier has made in the past, and I'm excited to see what he's going to do with it. No cast has been announced yet, but I'd be shocked if actor Macon Blair, who has appeared in all of the director's films thus far, didn't have a major role in it. Incidentally, Blair just made his directorial debut at the Sundance Film Festival with a movie called I don't feel at home in this world anymore., which will arrive on Netflix on February 24, 2017.

JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 2: Bone-Crunching Featurette Focuses on The Killer Action Training

I was already pumped to see John Wick: Chapter 2, but after seeing this behind-the-scenes featurette, I'm even more hyped for it. It sounds like the filmmakers and actors involved (including star Keanu Reeves) know exactly what made the first film special: inventive action, long takes, and wide cinematography so the audience can see and appreciate the fact that they're doing all this stuff in camera. It sounds like things just got kicked up to another level in the sequel, and I can't wait to see it.

Marvel Studios' BLACK PANTHER Has Started Production

I recently saw that Mondo is planning to release a vinyl version of the score for Ryan Coogler's Creed, which got me thinking about how utterly fantastic that movie is. I was excited to see what Coogler might do with a sequel (which still might happen), but I'm even more pumped to see what he does with Black Panther, the upcoming film from Marvel Studios. The company just sent out a press release stating that production is underway, and reading the cast list for this thing has me grinning bigger and bigger with every name. This cast is so stacked, it's ridiculous. (I'm not sure if I even knew that Forest Whitaker was in this movie, but I know now.) Read the full press release below, which includes what I believe is the first official synopsis of the film:

BURBANK, CALIF. (January 26, 2017)—Marvel Studios announced today that production has begun on “Black Panther,” starring Chadwick Boseman (“Captain America: Civil War,”  “Get on Up”), Michael B. Jordan (“Creed,” “Fruitvale Station”), Academy Award® winner Lupita Nyong’o (“Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” “12 Years a Slave”), Danai Gurira (“The Walking Dead,” upcoming “All Eyez on Me”), Martin Freeman (“Hobbit” trilogy, “Sherlock”), Daniel Kaluuya (upcoming “Get Out,” “Sicario”),  with Academy Award® nominee Angela Bassett (“American Horror Story,” “London Has Fallen”), with Academy Award® winner Forest Whitaker (“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” Lee Daniels’ “The Butler”), and Andy Serkis (“Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”).
Additional cast members include Letitia Wright (“Urban Hymn,” “Glasgow Girls”), Winston Duke (“Person of Interest, “Modern Family”), Florence Kasumba (“Captain America: Civil War,” “Emerald City”), Sterling K. Brown (“Whiskey Tango Foxtrot,” “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”) and John Kani (“Captain America: Civil War,” “Coriolanus”).
Ryan Coogler (“Creed,” “Fruitvale Station”) directs Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” from a screenplay he co-wrote with Joe Robert Cole (“The People v. O.J. Simpson:  American Crime Story”).  The film, which opens in U.S. theaters on February 16, 2018, will be shot in Atlanta and South Korea.
“Black Panther” follows T’Challa who, after the events of “Captain America: Civil War,” returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to take his place as King. However, when an old enemy reappears on the radar, T’Challa’s mettle as King and Black Panther is tested when he is drawn into a conflict that puts the entire fate of Wakanda and the world at risk.
Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” is produced by Kevin Feige with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Nate Moore, Jeffrey Chernov and Stan Lee serving as executive producers.
Coogler’s creative brain trust includes his frequent collaborators: director of photography Rachel Morrison, A.S.C. (“Dope,” “Fruitvale Station”), production designer Hannah Beachler (“Creed,” “Fruitvale Station”), editors Claudia Castello (“Creed,” “Fruitvale Station”) and Michael P. Shawver (“Creed,” “Fruitvale Station”); along with costume designer Ruth E. Carter (“Selma,” Lee Daniels’ “The Butler”), visuals effects supervisor Geoffrey Baumann (“Doctor Strange,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron”), Academy Award®- winning makeup designer Joel Harlow (“Star Trek Beyond,” “Black Mass”) and seven-time Academy Award® nominee, special effects supervisor Dan Sudick (“Captain America: Civil War,” “Marvel’s The Avengers”).
Based on the Marvel comic character that first appeared in “Fantastic Four Vol. 1” Issue 52, published in 1966, “Black Panther” joins Marvel Studios’ slate of releasesin its Phase 3 commitment to introduce film audiences to new heroes and continue the adventures of fan favorites over the course of four years and nine films.
In 2016, Marvel Studios continued its unprecedented success with the release of “Captain America: Civil War,” which opened on May 6 with the fifth largest opening weekend of all time and has since garnered box office receipts of over $1.1 billion worldwide.
The juggernaut studio ended the year with its newest Super Hero “Doctor Strange,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Rachel McAdams. The film opened #1 at the box office on November 4 and went on to gross more than $659 million worldwide to date. The two films propelled Marvel Studios’ #1 domestic box-office opening streak to a record-breaking 14 consecutive films.
Marvel Studios’ other epic big-screen adventures includeMarvel’s“Iron Man,” “The Incredible Hulk,” “Iron Man 2,” “Thor,” “Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Marvel’s The Avengers,” “Iron Man 3,” “Thor: The Dark World,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Ant-Man,” and the upcoming “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” (May 5, 2017), “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (July 7, 2017), “Thor: Ragnarok” (November 3, 2017) and “Avengers: Infinity War” (May 4, 2018).

Sundance Review: 78/52 Breaks Down Hitchcock's Infamous PSYCHO Shower Scene

$

If you're a lover of film then there's no doubt that you're a fan of Alfred Hitchcock. The guy was a genius who made some incredible films in his career. I love everything that he's done, but my favorite would have to be Psycho. I don't need to sit here and tell you how amazing that film is because you already know.

What you may not know, though, is that one of the main reasons behind why Hitchcock wanted to make Psycho was because of that shower scene in which Janet Leigh's Marion Crane is murdered. He was so obsessed with it that he spent seven days shooting it, and it was only three minutes long. That three minutes of had to be perfect, though. It had to be exactly what he wanted it to be, and it had to get his message across loud and clear. This one scene isn't just the most important scene in the film but it was one of the most important scenes in the history of filmmaking.

78/52 is a fantastic and fascinating documentary that breaks down and analyzes every little detail of that legendary shower scene, what it all means, and why Hitchcock did what he did when he was shooting it. It's wonderfully insightful and gives the audience plenty of food for thought. Movie fans will definitely love discussing it.

The doc is filled with interviews with various actors, directors, and other film experts that share their thoughts on the scene, how it affected audiences, and how it completely changed film forever. It paved the way for what was to come in modern-day horror and films in general. These people share their theories and discuss the symbolic hidden layers that are all over the place in the infamous scene.

Some of the people interviewed for the doc include Marli Renfro, who was Liegh's body double in the film, director Guillermo del Toro, editor Walter Murch, Jamie Lee Curtis, Osgood Perkins, Hitchcock's granddaughter Tere Carrubba, American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis, and Elijah Wood. There are also old interviews with Hitchcock himself talking about the scene and what he wanted to accomplish.

Hitchcock did things that no one had ever done before with this scene! Hell, he brutally killed off the star of the film only 40 minutes in, he made audiences see things that weren't even there, he ripped the feeling of comfort from people's homes, and he did it all to the sweet sounds of Bernard Herman's incredible musical score that served as Marion's heart beat speeding up with fear then slowly dying. Hitchcock originally wanted that scene to have no music, thankfully Herman changed his mind.

One thing's for sure, after watching this doc, I'll never watch Psycho the same way again. There's so much information packed into this doc and a ton of it was stuff that I'd never realized before.

Oh! And in case you're wondering, The title of the film 78/52 refers to the number of set-ups and cuts used by Hitchcock to create the three-minute sequence that utterly shocked audiences in the 1960s.

This is a must watch doc for any true film fan.

Usually, they don't grab me as much, but this CinemaSins video captured me from the first sin when it came to The Secret Life Of Pets. I guess it's fine if Comcast has a vested interest in the film, but holy mother of God did they shove this film down our throats for the past two years. It was in literally every commercial they advertised! They advertised it so much I thought the film was out six months before it actually was! Other than that, it's your own personal opinion as to how valid the rest of these gripes are. Check out the full video below.

Scott Derrickson Really Hopes the Fantastic Four Find a Place in the MCU

$

For those of you hoping that the Fantastic Four one day find solid footing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you can take solace in the fact that there are people in power, like Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson, who feel the same way! He spoke with ScreenRant about the franchise he would most like to see in the MCU, and in the midst of a Moon Knight response switched gears and gave us this...

“Actually, scratch that answer. Here’s my answer. My answer is this: I still have hope that Fantastic Four can be properly brought into the MCU because a lot of Doctor Strange – that’s the comment I read the most during that. I love those characters and I think that they still deserve another shot at finding a true home in the MCU. I still have hope for that. That’s my honest answer.”

With the three bombs the franchise has already had under Fox, perhaps one day the news that Marvel has once again secured the franchise rights would give audiences hope that this film can finally be done right! I honestly don't think anyone will feel that way until Fox gives up the rights, and even then it may take quite a bit of convincing by Marvel.

Personally, I just don't think there's too much room for the team in the current lineup. You have The Avengers for big stuff and street level heroes like Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Jessica Jones...and really no home for them to call their own. As much as I liked The Thing as a kid, I think they're a set of heroes that were phased out of usefulness in the wake of more exciting and useful heroes. I could be dead wrong on that, but it's just how I feel. Anyone else feel that way?

DEADPOOL 2 Writers Discusses X-Men Universe Timeline, Tone, and Setting Up Their Own Universe

$

Fans are already pumped up about Deadpool 2, and we really don't know anything about it other than it will introduce Cable and see the return of Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead. One other thing that it will have is that amazing humor from the first film with Deadpool constantly breaking the fourth wall.

During an interview with THR, screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick talk about their plans for the sequel and when discussing how the movie fits into the confusing timeline of the X-Men cinematic universe, they explain that it doesn't:

"What's nice is Deadpool exists in his own universe. He's part of the larger X-Men universe, but in a way he isn't. He interacts with that world but he is in the present. We don't deal with the '60s or the '70s or the future. It's here and now. More than anything, I think he's going to have his fun with what they do in the other franchise. But fortunately, we don't have to play by those same rules. Deadpool is a movie that did break all the rules. And I think we're going to continue to break those rules. That involves knowing that he's in a movie, talking to the audience, breaking that fourth wall, a characteristic that they established so brilliantly in the comics way back when. So yeah, I do think that timelines are something that we can make fun of and don't have to be slave to."

If you saw the first movie, then you know that there was really one one reference to the timelines, and it was done in a joking manner when Colossus tells Deadpool that he's going to be brought to the Professor at which point Deadpool asks, "McAvoy or Stewart?" This kind of humor is going to carry on through the sequel, and it's going to be a blast seeing what kind of new jokes they come up with.

They go on to talk about the tone of the Deadpool franchise and how it compares the other tones of other comic book movie universes. They also say that they hope to set up their own Deadpool universe:

"I think sometimes the movies get a little overstuffed trying to set up future movies and it almost feels burdensome or obligatory, where you are weaving in four or five different plots that really aren't in service of the current movie, but are to set up  audience anticipation or logic for what's coming. We really are trying our best to avoid that. There is something to the movie that is just worried about itself for the moment.
"The different universes tend to have different tones, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe has a very specific, genius tone that was set in Iron Man and has lived well beyond that into the other movies. DC tends to have its own tone, which is this dark, gritty tone. The X-Men have their own tone, which is kind of somewhere in between. Not too funny, not too light. But not quite as dark as the DC stuff. And I think what we stumbled into was a new tone, and I haven't seen Logan, so it's tough to say if they have it, but I think we hope to have our own universe that is defined less by characters and timelines and things like that and more by tone. The hope is Deadpool 2 and X-Force and future movies all be this new, consistent, sillier tone. More self-aware tone. And edgier and rated-R tone. We want to be establishing the universe but also focusing on each individual movie and not worrying too much about building a larger threat to the world or a larger plot machination."

That being said, I seriously doubt we'll ever see Deadpool crossover with any X-Men films, but it would be a different story if the characters from these X-Men films entered the world of Deadpool. That seems like it would work much better because it would be really hard to bring that Deadpool tone into a movie that already has a set tone.

I'm just excited about Deadpool 2 and I hope that the creative team behind it will get to fully set up a Deadpool style universe.

Mark Hamill Offers Thoughts on THE LAST JEDI Title; These Titles May Be Telling Us Something

$

0

There's been a lot of talk and discussion about the recently revealed title for Star Wars: Episode VIII. The movie will be called Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and fans are wondering what that means and who the last Jedi could be.

Mark Hamill was recently asked by Uproxx what he thinks the title means and if he know who the last Jedi is, and this was his amusing response:

"By the way, when you read The Force Awakens script, the very first two words are, 'Luke Skywalker has vanished.' Ooh, baby, this is going to be good! I’m going to have a great part! But down later in the crawl, and I can’t quote it exactly, I saw on Twitter this morning, 'until Skywalker, the last Jedi, is destroyed.' I thought, well, I didn’t know that! I’ve only seen it twice – VII, I mean. And I was wondering why they would use that phrase if it was used that way, because it specifies me. And I think it’s very ambiguous. Is the last Jedi Leia? Is it me? […] Is it someone we’ve never met before? Or is it Rey? Because she seems to have the Force as well. So we’ll all wait and see."

Of course, he's being a bit of ham while making that statement, but I honestly think that the title is referring to Luke Skywalker. There's also a cool thing about these Star Wars titles that fans have pointed out. The two titles form an intriguing sentence.

"The Force Awakens The Last Jedi."

I seriously doubt that was done by accident. Director Rian Johnson did say he knew what he wanted the title to be when he started working on the script, and I'm sure he wanted his title to connect to The Force Awakens, which is so cool. This whole title thing was spark for me when I came across this amusing image on my Facebook feed:

This made me laugh, but it also made me wonder what the title of the film for Episode IX could be. I thought it's be fun to open it to all of you. In the comment section below tell us how you think the full title should conclude.

Sundance Review: BRIGSBY BEAR Is a Touching Tribute to Imagination, Creativity, and the Art of Filmmaking

$
0
0

Brigsby Bear is one of my favorite films that I've seen up at Sundance. This is such a sweet and charming movie that pays tribute to creativity, imagination and the art of filmmaking.

The movie tells an offbeat, quirky story of a man named James (Kyle Mooney) who was raised in an underground bunker, off the grid, in the desert by two people who kidnapped him when he was a baby. He spent 25 years in this seclusion with extremely overprotective fake parents. Of course, he only knew them as mom and dad. The man who raised him is played by Mark Hamill

James grew up watching only one show, called Brigsby Bear, which was a production that his captors produced just for him, and his whole world revolved around this show. He even ran a Brigsby Bear online forum on an old '80s computer that he thought was real.

One day the police come racing in to save James from these people to take him back to his real family in Cedar Hills, Utah. He obviously has absolutely no idea what is going on and what this all means ,and he's thrust into a scary modern unfamiliar world that he is forced to adjust to.

It's here that he learns that no one else in the world has seen Brigsby Bear and that he won't be getting any new episodes, which is very discouraging and hard for him to deal with. He shows the series to one of his newfound friends who starts posting the episodes online where it becomes a big hit.

After James watches his first movie on the big screen, he decides that he wants to tell the final chapter of Brigsby Bear by embarking on a journey to make his own Brigsby Bear movie. He enlists the help of his new friends and starts to learn everything he can about filmmaking techniques and special effects.

The film is wonderfully entertaining and is packed full of all kinds of great humor as we watch James adjust to this new world and new family. He's incredibly awkward at first, but he really does try hard to fit in and accept the way things are. The one thing he can't let go of is Brigsby Bear, that's his passion in the same way that many of us are passionate about things like Marvel, Star Wars and Star Trek

Over the course of the film, he forms a relationship with his new parents and his sister, but it isn't without its hard times and trials. Through his love of Brigsby Bear and his passion to make a movie, he rises above his troubles and fears and creates something for the world to enjoy.

This is a truly touching film that is full of passion and inspiration. This movie is for anyone who has ever been passionate about something and set out to create something based on that passion.

Richard Kelly Is Planning a Big and Ambitious DONNIE DARKO Sequel

Richard Kelly is an interesting filmmaker, who has made some fascinating films in his career. His best work is still Donnie Darko, which was a mind-bending sci-fi story that blew my mind when I first saw it. I love this movie, and it looks like Kelly is planning to return to that world for a new sequel that he's developing. Don't worry about that S. Darko piece of crap film, that doesn't count.

While talking to HMV, Kelly says he's looking at doing a new film in that universe that is "much bigger" and "more ambitious." He explains:

“It’s big and expensive and I think there’s time to get to that. I want to make sure we’ve got the budget to do it justice and not to compromise anything. Another story in this world needs resources and we need to have that in place. I need to get my next film out of the gate and then we can go back and look at it.”

It's great to hear that he's got big plans brewing for this return to the world of Donnie Darko. I'm excited to see what he ends up doing with it. I'm also curious to see what this other film project he's working on is. There are no details, but the fact that he's returning to the Darko universe is pretty cool.

SICARIO 2 Plot Details Revealed by Writer Taylor Sheridan

Before helming last year's Oscar-nominated Arrival (my favorite film of 2016), director Denis Villenueve directed Sicario, the nail-biting border thriller from writer Taylor Sheridan that starred Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro, and Josh Brolin. Villeneuve won't be back to direct the sequel, called Soldado, since he's tackling Blade Runner 2049, but Del Toro and Brolin will be back in front of the camera and Sheridan has written Soldado's screenplay. In a new interview with Collider, Sheridan spoke a bit about the upcoming follow-up, how it's going to differ from the original, and confirmed the idea of a third movie in the series:

"[When the producers asked him about a sequel] I said, ‘Look you can’t really do a sequel, but I sure would love to see what happened if these guys didn’t have a chaperone.’ Because basically they’re operating within the United States, so I played with some actual laws that exist and found a way that they could operate more or less legally within the U.S. But they had a chaperone. What happens if they weren’t in the U.S. and they didn’t have a chaperone? How bad or good would that work out? You’ve seen Sicario, good isn’t going to factor into it too much.”

As far as what plot will include, Sheridan offered the following detail:

“I would say if Sicario is a film about the militarization of police and that blending over, this is removing the policing aspect from it.”

We've known for a little while that a third film in this nascent franchise could eventually be in the cards. Sheridan won't give details, but when asked about a third movie, he said, “Who knows? I know what it would be if they did. I know exactly what it would be if they did.”

No word yet on a production start date for Soldado, but director Stefano Sollima will step in to replace Villeneuve. He certainly has some big shoes to fill, but with Sheridan previously promising that this script is "ten times" more vicious than the first, I'm hopeful that this film turns out to be just as thrilling as the original.
