Rosario Dawson vs. Katherine Heigl in Trailer for the Thriller UNFORGETTABLE

Katherine Heigl gets extremely jealous of Rosario Dawson in the first trailer for her new film Unforgettable, and she becomes Dawson's pathological nightmare. That's what she gets for moving in on Heigl's ex-husband and daughter. But don't worry, you get to see a clip of Dawson kicking Heigl's ass.

Heigl stars as Tessa Connover, who is barely coping with the end of her marriage when her ex-husband, David (Stults), becomes happily engaged to Julia Banks (Dawson)—not only bringing Julia into the home they once shared but also into the life of their daughter, Lilly (Isabella Rice). Trying to settle into her new role as a wife and a stepmother, Julia believes she has finally met the man of her dreams, the man who can help her put her own troubled past behind her. But Tessa’s jealousy soon takes a pathological turn until she will stop at nothing to turn Julia’s dream into her ultimate nightmare.

The movie is set to be released on April 21, 2017, and if you're interested in watching Dawson and Heigl fight, then it might be worth watching.

Meet Gru's "Bad" New Nemesis in Funny First Trailer for DESPICABLE ME 3

Despicable Me 3 finds Gru facing off against a completely new villain who is still very much living in the '80s. The character's name is Balthazar Bratt, and we get our first real introduction to him in this first trailer for the film. Bratt is a former child star who’s grown up to become obsessed with the character he played in the ’80s. He is being perfectly being voiced by South Park's Trey Parker. The trailer offers a great and fun introduction to the new villain.

Despicable Me 3 actually looks like it could be a hilarious sequel. It definitely looks like it will be better than the last Despicable Me movie that was released. The villain is going to be a big part of what makes this sequel so good. He's got all kinds of amusing '80s style weapons, and his theme song in the trailer is Michael Jackson's "Bad"!

Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig both return for the third film in the franchise that was co-directed by Pierre CoffinKyle Balda, and Eric Guillon. The film is set to be released in theaters on June 30, 2017. Enjoy the trailer!

Art Series Shows What Pokémon Creatures Would Look Like in Real Life

Artist Joshua Dunlop has created a little series of art that shows us what a few of the Pokémon creatures would look like if they existed in the real world. He calls the series Pokémon Zoology, and he described his process in creating the art saying:

"I originally sketched out some rough ideas in Photoshop, using real life animals as reference. Once I was happy, I used a 3D program called 3D-Coat to build and texture the model. I then brought the model into a rendering program called KeyShot which allowed me to get realistic lighting and effects,” he said. “Finally I brought everything into Photoshop and built the images using a combination of photo-manipulation and digital painting. It takes a while but it’s a lot of fun when you see the finished product.”

So far he's created art of Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. It's kind of cool and interesting to see these characters in this real world kind of light. It's kind of a shame that Pokemon aren't really real.

Michael Fassbender Shares Details on His New Robot Character Walter in ALIEN: COVENANT

I'm very curious about Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant. I've heard and written so much about it, but we still don't really know the main details of the story yet. Just a lot of bits and pieces of information that allow us to speculate about how things might play out.

We've got a few new details to add to the mix, and they focus on Michael Fassbender's artificial person character in the story. He's not playing the same character that he played in Prometheus. That character's name was David. In this film the character's name is Walter, and in a recent interview with Comingsoon, the actor offered up some new details on Walter.

“I think Walter’s a real different kettle of fish. David was definitely a work-in-progress, somewhat of a prototype I suppose. The elements of him that were the human elements I think people found a little disturbing, so Walter’s more of a straightforward robot. Pretty logical, much more of a servant without the ego.”

It's not hard to see the comparison to Ash from Alien and Bishop from Aliens. One was a little more level-headed than the other. The big question is, will Walter experience a glitch that makes him go a little nuts in Alien: Covenant? Only time will tell.

“Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world — whose sole inhabitant is the ‘synthetic’ David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.”

The cast of the film also includes Katherine Waterston, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir, Jussie Smolett, Amy Seimetz, Carmen Ejogo, Callie Hernandez, and Billy CrudupNoomi Rapace is also expected to come back to her role as Dr. Elizabeth Shaw, and James Franco is said to have a role in the film as the Captain of the Covenant ship.

Alien: Covenant opens in theaters on October 6, 2017.

Adam Savage Creates and Controls a Metal Beast in Cool Build Video

Adam Savage's Tested is quickly becoming one of my new favorite channels on YouTube. The former Mythbusters host creates things such as replicas, machines, or just interviews collectors who make neat things! In his latest episode, Adam creates a pedal-powered "Strand Beast." You may have seen these before, although they are typically wind-powered and made of wood.

Watch Adam create and test this wondrous machine in an interesting 20-minute video! The final result is pretty good, although it should be obvious this thing does not do well with several pairs of shoes on.

First Trailer for NBC's New TV Series TAKEN - "Every Hero Has a Beginning"

NBC has released the first trailer for their new action series Taken, which was inspired by the Liam Neeson film franchise. The series changes up a few elements of the franchise that we're familiar with, but it actually looks like it could be a solid series. The biggest issue it has is that Liam Neeson isn't the one kicking ass! Taking his place as Bryan Mills is an actor from Vikings named Clive Standen. I liked him in Vikings, but he just doesn't have the same badass weight that Neeson carries in his performance.

The series is a prequel that offers us a story that takes place before the events of the first film. After saving a train full of people and losing his daughter in the process, Mills is recruited by the CIA where he will fine-tune his particular set of special killing skills. Here's the synopsis:

This new, modern-day, edge-of-your-seat thriller follows the origin story of younger, hungrier, former Green Beret Bryan Mills as he deals with a personal tragedy that shakes his world. As he fights to overcome the incident and exact revenge, Mills is pulled into a career as a deadly CIA operative, a job that awakens his very particular, and very dangerous, set of skills.

Luc Besson is an executive producer on the Taken series, and it's set to premiere on NBC on February 27, 2017. I'm a sucker for these kinds of shows, so I'll give it shot and hope that it's good.

Measure Your Own Kessel Run Times With This Han Solo-Themed Watch

I'm a big fan of slick-looking watches, but cool watches aren't cheap, so it's a tough thing to get into unless you have a bunch of extra cash laying around. At $549.99, this Han Solo-themed watch from ThinkGeek is no exception — but if you have the money and dig the style, this bad boy will help you keep track of your own personal best times making the Kessel run. There's even a "Parsecs" guide on the ring that has everything under 12 painted red, so you'll easily be able to tell if you top Han's boastful claim from the original Star Wars.

Okay, so we all know Parsecs are a measure of distance and not time. However, if your ship has a maximum speed, you could theoretically mark out distance on a clock or a watch. For instance, when we're on the highway going 60 miles per hour, we could mark 30 minutes into the trip as 30 miles. So that's our explanation for this Parsecs concave ring marking, inspired by the Kessel Run.

Russian Medieval MMA Is Back and Just as Brutal and Awkward as Ever

Back when we first reported on Russian Medieval MMA, the sport was still in its infancy. To be honest, I don't know if the sport has improved since their videos have began appearing in my newsfeed again, but they definitely have more flash! The referee is in armor, the ring girls are now adolescent boys river stepping between rounds, and the whole thing is still just two dudes in armor beating the piss out of each other!

It looks hilarious and exhausting as the fight lasts 21 minutes, but by the 15-minute mark you can tell all either guy wants to do is get the hell out of the bulky armor they are wearing! I'm legitimately still surprised this fighting league is still active, although I know they have legitimate MMA fights as well.

Watch and realize that LARPing isn't really more intense if you add period realistic armor.

Legendary Pictures Reveals Titles for GODZILLA and PACIFIC RIM Sequels

Legendary Pictures has revealed the official titles of two of the biggest sequels they currently have in development. The sequel to Gareth Edwards' Godzilla will be called Godzilla: King of Monsters. This is basically the same title that was used for the 1956 American release of the original Godzilla movie, which was called Godzilla, King of the Monsters! Edwards will not be back to direct the sequel. That job goes to Trick 'r Treat and Krampus director Michael Dougherty, who will do an awesome job with it! It will be released on March 22, 2019.

The second title is for the studios upcoming Pacific Rim sequel. It has more of a generic title. They are going with Pacific Rim: Uprising. The title of the film was previously Pacific Rim: Maelstrom. Not sure why they changed it, but that's that. John Boyega (The Force Awakens) is set to star in the film, which is being directed by Steven S. DeKnight (Marvel’s Daredevil). It will be released on February 23, 2018.

Here's the full press release from Legendary announcing the producing teams developing the films:

Legendary today announced the hiring of three veteran production executives to its feature film operations including Herbert W. Gains, who has been named EVP of Physical Production, Valerie Flueger Veras who has been named SVP of Post- Production and Sara Flamm who will take on the SVP Physical Production role. The new additions were announced by Mary Parent, Legendary’s Vice Chairman of Worldwide Production.
“Herb comes to us with a tremendous body of experience working alongside some of the most prolific filmmakers in our industry,” said Parent. “His strong business acumen and commitment to supporting the vision of storytellers with preeminent production resources makes him an excellent complement to our team here at Legendary.” Gains will report directly to Parent, effective immediately.
Best known for his work as Executive Producer on such films as Warner Bros’ The Judge and Watchmen, as well as the recently released Jack Reacher: Never Go Back from Paramount, Gains’ responsibilities will include overseeing production of Legendary’s feature film slate including such highly anticipated projects as Pacific Rim: Uprising, Pokemon’s Detective Pikachu and Godzilla: King of Monsters. Gains will also work closely with the post-production team insuring that the filmmaker’s vision remains intact through production to final distribution.
“I’m extremely gratified to be entrusted with this unique opportunity,” said Gains. “Legendary’s evolution over the past decade has been nothing short of remarkable. I am proud to take a key role in the company’s continued growth in feature film production and excited by the potential of its established franchises and the diverse slate of films currently in development.”
Reporting to Gains at Legendary, is Valerie Flueger Veras, who will assume the role of SVP of Post-Production. “I have had the good fortune of working closely with Valerie on multiple films over the last few years,” said Parent. “She brings experience from all aspects of filmmaking to the post-production process and really understands how to support filmmakers whether they are making an intimate character drama or a big VFX driven tentpole.”
Flueger Veras is a seasoned executive who has lead the post-production efforts on some of the most critically-acclaimed films of the last decade including Oscar-nominated feature films, The Revenant, Selma and Nebraska. As SVP of Post-Production, Flueger Veras will immediately begin overseeing post on the upcoming Spring action film, Kong: Skull Island.
“I’m thrilled to be joining Legendary,” said Flueger Veras. “In addition to having an opportunity to re-team with Mary Parent who I have long respected, I am extremely excited to be working alongside such an imaginative and highly respected team of professionals and can’t wait to dive in on this truly iconic slate of films.”
Rounding out Legendary’s production team is Sara Flamm, who will step into the SVP of Physical Production role and will also report to Gains. “Sara brings with her a wealth of experience working on the types of genre films that Legendary is best known for,” said Parent. “We’re excited to be adding her expertise to this skilled new team.”
Most recently Flamm worked alongside Gains as Unit Production Manager on on Jack Reacher: Never Go Back and the upcoming film Geostorm. She has also worked as Production Supervisor on numerous hit films including The Judge as well as comic adaptations, Green Lantern and Legendary’s own Watchmen. In Flamm’s new role she has already begun work on the production of Pacific Rim: Uprising, currently shooting in Australia.
“Having worked with Legendary in the past, I’ve long admired their focus on delivering a truly elevated cinematic experience to their audiences,” said Flamm. They’ve had an incredible history of blockbuster films, and I’m looking forward to being a part of this team’s continued success.”

Stephen King Talks About Childhood and The Origin of Fear

$

I loved reading as a kid, but for a long time after college, I stopped reading novels for fun. I don't exactly know why — I think I was forced to read so many things for assignments and projects that the very act of opening a book was somehow compromised for me — but I finally got over that self-imposed nonsense a couple of years ago and fell in love with reading for fun again. I feel like I have a lot of catching up to do, and I think the works of Stephen King are one of the biggest areas I need to concentrate on. I read the first Dark Tower entry (The Gunslinger) earlier this year, but with so many movie adaptations out there of King's work (including an upcoming adaptation of It next year), there are a bunch of his novels I want to read as soon as I can.

This old interview with King, in which he talks about childhood, fear, and more, has been animated as a YouTube video, and I think it's a good watch for people like me who haven't fully gotten into his writing yet and also for long-time fans of his. It's always cool to get inside the head of prolific artists like this and see where they're coming from with the work they create.

Review: Disney and Lucasfilm Play It Safe with ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY

$
0
0

Star Wars has been a cultural landmark for almost forty years, but it took until 2016 to finally get a movie in the franchise that doesn't once utter the name "Skywalker." It's refreshing in that regard, but Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the first film to spin-off from the main saga, has been hyped as a "standalone" movie, and that couldn't be further from the truth. Rogue One does not and cannot stand alone — it's often paralyzingly dependent on the audience's knowledge of the events of A New Hope. Still, the good moments outweigh the bad, and if nothing else, the film showcases flashes of the potential these spin-off movies have to expand the franchise's universe beyond the actions of its most important family.

Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) is a fiery badass who has spent her life hiding her identity. She's the daughter of Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen), a famous scientist ripped away from his wife and child by the Empire years earlier and forced to help build the Death Star, a planet-destroying super weapon overseen by the ambitious Director Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn). Jyn was raised and trained by an extremist former soldier named Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker), but her troublemaking ways landed her in a prison transport vehicle. She's quickly rescued by Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), a Captain for the Rebel Alliance who has heard whispers about the Death Star's existence. The Rebels wants to use Jyn's past with Saw as a way to secure a meeting with him, because Saw reportedly has a secret message that reveals a fatal flaw in the Death Star's design. It doesn't take long before Jyn, Cassian, and a mouthy droid named K-2SO (Alan Tudyk) are joined by former Imperial pilot Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed), a blind, staff-wielding monk named Chirrut (Donnie Yen), and Chirrut's bruiser of a bodyguard Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen), forming the unlikely spine of a movement within the rebellion to steal the Death Star plans and broadcast its weakness before it wipes them all out.

While there are still a handful of space battles to be found here (one of which may contain the whole series' best space battle moment), Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) shoots much of the film's action from a grounded perspective and gives the story a visual style that's appropriate for its scrappy, determined protagonists. There's not a weak link to be found in the main cast (which is by far the most diverse group of actors assembled for a Star Wars movie), and composer Michael Giacchino — the first person other than John Williams to ever score a live-action Star Wars film — does some solid work with the score (keep your ears open for echoes of his Lost music in Krennic's theme).

While much of the film works, there's one massive misfire that grinds it to a halt. The studio is asking that we avoid spoilers, so I won't reveal the specific character to which I'm referring, but there's a CGI recreation of an actor from a previous Star Wars film that is one of the most disturbing things I've seen in a movie this year. This actor died years ago in real life, but here he's resurrected looking like a Robert Zemeckis motion-capture reject; the effect is so unconvincing, it felt as if I'd been not only pulled out of the movie, but the roof of the theater blew off and I was yanked out of the building by The Dark Knight's sky hook. Even if the effect had been perfect, though, the inclusion of this person's digital recreation strikes me as a deeply troubling benchmark for blockbuster filmmaking. Disney pulled some interesting aging tricks with Ant-Man and Captain America: Civil War recently, but those were using actors who are still alive. It seems to me like death would be a pretty good place to draw the line, but apparently that's not the case. I don't know what kind of rights the studio needed to procure from the actor's estate before they could make this happen, but I shudder to think of the ways this technology might be used moving forward.

Make no mistake: overall, this is an enjoyable, well-made picture, but the film just barely manages to justify its own existence. It retroactively makes A New Hope a better movie by explaining how the Empire could have possibly built such a ludicrous flaw into the Death Star, and the act of answering that question alone makes this film worthwhile. Fascinating, fleshed out characters like Jyn, Cassian, and Bodhi are just icing on the cake after that. But the story gets to be a bit of a slog during its second act, and for all the talk about how this was supposed to be an intense war movie, it rarely feels visceral. The action is fine, but it always sort of feels...well, like a Star Wars film; the spin-offs are Disney's chance to stretch these stories beyond the established template, and while it definitely isn't a retread of what we've seen before (a claim we can't make about The Force Awakens), there's a ton of room to push things further than what we see here. That's one of my biggest takeaways about Rogue One: Disney could have told any story it wanted, and the decision to tell this specific story feels safe. It absolutely expands the universe within the franchise and provides some positive messages ("rebellions are built on hope"), but my hope was that it would go a little further and make this movie feel like more than just a well-filmed connect-the-dots exercise with a dash of heart. Oh well. I'll just have to get a new hope.

Watch: Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence Insult Each Other For Four Straight Minutes

This month's sci-fi film Passengers stars Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence, who are unquestionably two of the hottest movie stars on the planet right now. If you follow Pratt on Instagram, you've seen his antics trolling fans by cropping Lawrence out of every shot during the film's publicity tour, and now the two of them sit face to face in a segment for BBC Radio in which they're asked to insult each other until they completely break down or one delivers such a crushing blow that they can't continue.

They get some pretty good digs in, and even though it's all in good fun, they're so damn likable and charismatic that it's fun to watch them say terrible things to each other.

In 1993, Studio Ghibli made an animated film called Ocean Waves, which has also gone by the title I Can Hear the Sea. The film was never officially released in the U.S., but GKids is about to change that. They've restored in the film in 4K and will be giving it a limited release in the U.S. later this month.

I've actually never seen this film, so I'm kind of excited about the opportunity to see a Studio Ghibli film for the first time. The story center on two friends who both end up falling for the same girl who is new to their high school. Here's a brief synopsis:

As a young man returns home after his first year away at college he recalls his senior year of high school and the iron-willed, big city girl that turned his world upside down.

The film was directed by Tomomi Mochizuki and is based on a novel written by Saeko Himuro's novel. Ocean Waves was originally produced as a anime TV movie, and it was developed by a younger team of artists that ended up going over budget and over schedule on the film.

GKids plans on releasing the restored version of Ocean Waves on December 28th and it will be released on Blu-ray shortly after.

Video Examines the Culture of Creating "Passable" Films

$

Nerdwriter's latest video seems to be his most ambitious and interesting yet. In this video, he explores the culture of "passable films" and why they are made, and while I think he makes some incredible points about what makes films mediocre that I considered before, I think he makes a misstep in his analysis.

It would appear Nerdwriter writes this theory under the assumption that all films are written, directed, and created for the purpose of becoming iconic or legendary or at the very least leave a lasting impression on the culture of filmmaking when they are done.

It's all about money. No one writes Paul Blart Mall Cop 2 and says, "I wonder how many Golden Globes this one will snag?!" in an unironic fashion. Of course, there are films that strive to be something greater, but the examples presented in this film are nothing more than money thrown at a formula that works time and time again and made for an audience that wants nothing more than to turn their brain off when watching a film.

That's completely fine to do by the way! I love watching some cerebral films, but sometimes I just want to see someone get hit in the nuts! That's just my two cents. It's still a good video, but I think he got wrapped up into what he thinks all films should be rather than what they are.
