Paul Bettany to Play the Unabomber in Discovery Channel's New FBI Series MANIFESTO

Paul Bettany (Avengers, A Beautiful Mind) has been cast in the role of Ted Kaczynski, a.k.a. the Unabomber, in the Discovery Channel's new FBI drama series Manifesto. This is definitely an interesting role for the actor to take on, and I'm sure that he's going to be great in it.

This series sounds pretty fascinating as it explores how the FBI went about catching infamous criminal masterminds. The first season will "focus on FBI agent Jim 'Fitz' Fitzgerald, a highly specialized linguist, who challenged old school ways with a radical approach to intelligence gathering. His unconventional means brought the 'Unabomber' to justice after a near 20-year manhunt when he discovered that the key to unlocking the true identity of the 'Unabomber' could be found in the language of 'The Manifesto,' a detailed account of some of Kaczynski’s plots."

For those of you not familiar with the Unabomber, he was a domestic terrorist and anarchist who between 1978 and 1995 engaged in "a nationwide bombing campaign against people involved with modern technology, planting or mailing numerous homemade bombs, ultimately killing a total of three people and injuring 23 others. He is also known for his wide-ranging social critiques, which opposed industrialization and modern technology while advancing a nature-centered form of anarchism."

I've always been fascinated by this true crime kind of stuff, and I'm looking forward to seeing how this series turns out.

Hearing this interview with Francis Ford Coppola on the latest Blank on Blank has given me a new outlook on death. Yes, death is inevitable and no one wants to go too soon, but what is a life long lived if you didn't accomplish the things you wished to do with it? Maybe some of you reading were already keen to that way of living, but it took the director of The Godfather to help me recognize it!

Marvel Comics has given us our first look at their upcoming miniseries Deadpool the Duck #1. This is a Howard the Duck and Deadpool mashup series that comes from writer Stuart Moore (Cloak & DaggerThanos: Death Sentence) and artist Jacopo Camagni (Deadpool's Secret Secret Wars). This looks and sounds like it will be an incredibly fun series to read through. Here are the full details from the press release:

What do you get when you take one cynical anthropomorphic duck (named Howard) and cross it with the smelliest (and most annoying) mercenary in the Marvel Universe? DEADPOOL THE DUCK #1! Coming to comic shops and digital devices everywhere on Janurary 4th, its high-stakes avian antics as two of Marvel’s most beloved, and crass, heroes merge for an all-new series brought to you by Stuart Moore (CLOAK & DAGGER, THANOS: DEATH SENTENCE Novel) and Jacopo Camagni (DEADPOOL’s SECRET SECRET WARS).
When Deadpool is sent on a mission from S.H.I.E.L.D. to capture a high-profile E.T. that is rampaging across the high plains, the snatch-and-grab turns out to be much more complicated than the Merc with a Mouth anticipated. One unfortunate wrong place at the wrong time accident later leaves Deadpool and Howard fighting for control as the newest mercenary of the Marvel Universe!
So strap in, break out your chimichangas and crusty bread scraps and hang on! Because you’re in for: rabid raccoons, secret laboratories, cramped spaceships, evil corporations, gastric distress, and S.H.I.E.L.D. Did we mention that’s only issue one?! Flap your wings over to your local comic shop on January 4th to get your hands on DEADPOOL THE DUCK #1!

You will find a few more preview pages and art from Deadpool the Duck #1 below. Deadpool the Duck #1 goes on sale January 4, 2017.

Producer Frank Marshall Says BACK TO THE FUTURE Will Never Be Rebooted

As you know, Hollywood loves remaking old classic movies. There are still a few out there that haven't been touched and that should never be touched. The Goonies, E.T., and Back to the Future are just a few of them.

You'll be happy to hear that Back to the Future producer Frank Marshall says he will never allow the time traveling film to be rebooted or remade. When asked about it during an interview with Yahoo, he said:

“Yeah [we won’t reboot Back To The Future], as long as I have my say. No, that one exists just like E.T. – we’re never touching those. I love watching it. But how about we almost got the Chicago Cubs victory right?!”

There are some movies that just shouldn't be touched because no matter how hard a filmmaker tries, they just won't capture the magic and wonder of the original film. A good example of a film that should not have been re-made is Poltergeist. That original movie is a horror movie masterpiece and regardless of the fun aspects of the remake, it was pretty much inferior in every way.

Remakes of these classics would never live up to awesomeness of the original. Marshall is one of a few producers in Hollywood that obviously understands that. At least it's good to know that one classic from the '80s won't go through the remake meat grinder.

That said, all of these jokes are pretty hilarious, and if I were in a place where people didn't know English...I would undoubtedly do the same thing.

The recent trailer for Cars 3 has left several young fans very concerned for what will happen to their beloved Lightning McQueen. The new poster from Disney•Pixar cuts right to the future childhood trauma. We could be in for this coming generation's Bambi, and I for one applaud it. We need to de-nerf the world if our kids are ever going to grow up to be badasses. Cars 3 opens in theaters June 16th, 2017 (USA), which gives you enough time to mentally prepare your kids, or don't and just roll the dice.

I Got WESTWORLD PTSD When THE SIMPSONS Visited a Robotic Cowboy Town

I had a violent Westworld flashback whilst watching the "Every Simpsons Ever" marathon currently happening on FXX! It was the weirdest feeling ever. I was watching the episode "Kidney Trouble," where grandpa has a "full on Kidney blowout" after Homer refuses to let him use the bathroom when he needs to, and all of the sudden there are cowboy robots and prostitutes!

I kid you not as soon as I saw them my mind said, "Doesn't look like anything to me," and I legitimately wondered if Anthony Hopkins created me. Once I recovered I couldn't help but laugh imagining a Westworld scenario in The Simpsons universe...

Can you imagine this stuff happening in the HBO series?

This one in particular hit pretty close to home...

Before you go on one of those "Simpsons did it first" rants, don't forget Westworld has been a thing since the early '70s, although I doubt any of this episode was inspired by it. It just made me laugh how the show in a short time has managed to ruin both cowboys and robots for me!

Doug Jones in Space Command movie as Dor Neven

Last week we learned that Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) was the first person to join the cast of CBS' Star Trek: Discovery series. It has been confirmed by Deadline that she will be playing a Starfleet Captain named Han Bo, and she will captain another ship in the series named the Shenzhou. This ship will play a big role in the first season of the series.

It has also been reported by Variety that Doug Jones (Hellboy, Pan's Labrinth) has joined the cast as a character named Lt. Saru, who is described as "a Starfleet science officer and a member of an alien species new to the 'Star Trek' universe." This is a role I'm sure Jones will be perfect for. Anthony Rapp (A Beautiful Mind, Dazed and Confused) has also joined the project and he will play Lt. Stamets, "an astromycologist, fungus expert, and Starfleet science officer aboard the starship Discovery."

There's still not much known about the plot of Star Trek: Discovery, but we do know that it takes place 10 years before the events of the original series. We also know that the main character will be a young woman who serves as a lieutenant commander known as "Number One" on the Federation starship Discovery.

The series is set to premiere in May 2017 on CBS, after that all the episodes of Star Trek: Discovery will be available in the U.S. exclusively on CBS All Access. To catch up on everything that we've learned about the series, make sure to click here.

Two Final Chapters of the TRANSFORMERS: PRIME WARS Animated Series Trilogy Officially Announced

Machinima and Hasbro announced today that they are developing the final two installments of their Transformers Prime Wars animated series. It all started with Transformers: Combiner Wars, which was pretty awesome and worth checking out if you haven't seen it yet.

The two final chapters of the trilogy that they are developing are called Transformers: Titans Return and Transformers: Power of the Primes. According to the press release, the first sequel, Transformers: Titans Return, "will take the action of the series to new ‘heights,’ and feature return appearances from many fan-favorite Transformers characters as well as introduce new Autobots and Decepticons. Set in the period following the excitement of Transformers: Combiner Warsthe depleted forces of Cybertron and a broken Council of Worlds must now face-off against a new threat that is larger than anything that has come before."

There are no details on the third chapter, but I'm sure they'll come in due time. Machinima CEO Chad Gutstein had this to say in a statement:

“The global fan base has really embraced this vision of the Transformers, and we are thrilled to be working closely with Hasbro developing the next two installments of the series.”

Stephen Davis, Chief Content Officer of Hasbro, added:

“Transformers has always been fueled by the brand’s rich, compelling characters and storylines, and Transformers: Combiner Wars tapped into that lore to offer fans a truly unique and new digital-first story for the franchise. Following the success of the first series, we are excited to announce this continued collaboration with Machinima and believe Transformers fans will be thrilled to see the story continue to unfold.”

Hasbro and Machinima are teaming back up with Transformers: Combiner Wars executive producer and showrunner Eric Calderon, who will oversee the development of the final two installments of the Prime Wars trilogy.

Transformers: Combiner Wars is available to watch on a wide variety of platforms, including go90 (United States), SkyQ (U.K.), AMC Iberia (Spain and Portugal), Sohu (China), and YouTube (rest of world). Since it was released in August, the series has been viewed 120 million times.

DirecTV Now Streaming Service Launches Nov 30th — $35 a Month With Free Apple TV

To compete with the rising amount of streaming services (aka the future of TV), AT&T in March announced DirecTV Now, an on-demand and live broadcast streaming service comparable to PlayStation Vue, which we wrote about recently, and Sling TV.

To kick off the service, AT&T will be offering its $60 a month "Go Big" package (100+ channels) at $35, with the huge benefit that you will be locked in at that price for as long as you use the service. Sweetening the deal even more, if you prepay for three months of the "Go Big" package in advance you get an Apple TV for Free. (Insert joke about my name here.)

DirecTV Now will be available on Chrome Cast, iOS, Android, Amazon Fire TV, Amazon Fire Stick, and obviously Apple TV. The service doesn't launch until November 30th, but you can go to their website to be notified the instant they launch.

DirecTV Now

The options for cable cutting keep getting better. With so many companies that can now compete across the United States and the world, we have a higher chance for some kind of competitive price war. The reason so many people switch to streaming only is because in some markets they have only one company to work with that until recently had zero incentive to drop their prices.

Alternate Alien Concept Designs for the Fantastic Sci-Fi Film ARRIVAL

alternate-alien-concept-designs-for-the-fantastic-sci-fi-film-arrival

The sci-fi film Arrival ended up being surprisingly incredible. I thought it was a great film with a powerful story full of all kind of unexpected twists and turns. Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker all gave fantastic performances as well. If you haven't seen it yet, make sure to check it out while it's still in theaters.

The movie features a couple of alien characters who make contact with humans to help teach them their language. When I initially saw the aliens in the film, I immediately thought of Kang and Kodos from The Simpsons. They were very elegant designs that worked for the film and the story it told.

We now have some additional concept art for the film created by Peter Konig, giving us some alternate alien designs that are kinda cool. When talking to Cinemablend about working on the film, Konig said:

"For the creatures, when they brought me on, they were in a stage where (Denis) Villeneuve just wanted ideas, lots of ideas. He didn’t want to stick to the short story or the script in terms of what they should look like. He wanted variety, and to just try stuff. He sent me photo (references) of stuff he liked, real things he thought had elements that he thought were important – pictures of cuttle fish, squids, microscopic organisms, stuff like that. He also like horses eyes for their very soft and thoughtful qualities and because although they looked familiar they had this other quality of being slightly “other” and alien. They had a sympathetic look, but were a little spooky. He also wanted to try designs that had no back and no front, confusing to look at, yet still with an intelligent feel. I started with quick pencil sketches, which didn’t go anywhere. When I started kitbashing in Zbrush, I hit upon that purplish one with the tentacles and he really responded to that one and seemed really excited about it. I kinda thought that that was the one that would end up in the movie, but a lot of time went by and things changed."

You can check out even more of his concept art for the film below. Let us know what you think about some of the alternate designs.

Watch Tom Holland's Awkwardly Fun Facial Capture for SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING

Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts recently posted a video of star Tom Holland doing a bit of facial capture for his role of Spider-Man. It looks like a really awkward situation to be in, but it's kinda fun to watch.

The footage features a computer monitor that has a number of video feeds showing different angles of Holland’s face. The actor is in the background surrounded by a bunch of cameras to catch every angle they need for the VFX work that will be created for the film.

You'll see him make some silly sounds and facial expressions. The things actors will do to bring us fans joy and happiness... Oh man! I can't wait to see how this movie turns out! We'll get to see the first trailer for the film next month, so stay tuned for that! Spider-Man: Homecoming is set to be released in theaters on July 7, 2017.

HAMILTON's Lin-Manuel Miranda To Help Develop Lionsgate’s THE KINGKILLER CHRONICLE Film and TV Adpatation

Lionsgate has brought in Hamilton creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda to produce and help develop the feature film and TV adaptation of the fantasy book series The Kingkiller Chronicle. Miranda is also expected to compose the original music and write the songs for the adaptation, which may also get a stage production. Lionsgate is obviously looking to go all out on this franchise.

According to Deadline, the plan is for Lionsgate to "simultaneously develop and produce the feature film franchise based on the trilogy, the first movie of which to be written by Lindsey Beer (Transformers 5), and a TV drama series that expands on the world outside the books." The series will explore new characters and storylines.

The first film will be based on the story told in the first book, which is called The Name of the Wind. Here is the story description for the book:

Told in Kvothe's own voice, this is the tale of the magically gifted young man who grows to be the most notorious wizard his world has ever seen.

The intimate narrative of his childhood in a troupe of traveling players, his years spent as a near-feral orphan in a crime-ridden city, his daringly brazen yet successful bid to enter a legendary school of magic, and his life as a fugitive after the murder of a king form a gripping coming-of-age story unrivaled in recent literature.

A high-action story written with a poet's hand, The Name of the Wind is a masterpiece that will transport readers into the body and mind of a wizard.

With everything that they plan on doing with this property, Lionsgate feels they have a successful new franchise on their hands. Miranda is a talented individual, and it will be interesting to see what he ends up contributing to this project.

Trippy Concept Art for DOCTOR STRANGE Featuring Dormammu and the Mirror Dimension

If you enjoyed Marvel's Doctor Strange, you've gotta check out this collection of concept art from the film that has surfaced online. The first set of art features the big bad villain that Doctor Strange took on at the end of the movie, Dormammu. These are some crazy alternate designs for the character.

Then we have a series of pre-production art created by artist Oliver Pron, and they show us what they were envisioning early on in the action sequences involving the Mirror Dimension of the villainous Kaecilius and his Zealots.

So far Doctor Strange has made over $600 million dollars worldwide, making it the highest grossing solo character debut film from Marvel and beating out the first Iron Man movie. Doctor Strange is a great character and director Scott Derrickson made an incredible film, so it makes sense that the movie is making tons of money.

It Sounds Like We'll Eventually See a Sequel to JASON BOURNE

$
0
0

Jason Bourne wasn't my favorite film in the Bourne franchise. In fact, I thought it was the worst one out of the three previous movies. It made a solid amount of money at the box office, though, as it pulled in over $415 million worldwide. With that kind of money and the way that the movie ended, I wouldn't be surprised if we got another sequel.

Regardless of what audiences thought of the film, it turns out everyone involved with making it, including Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon, was happy with how Jason Bourne turned out, and in an interview with Yahoo, producer Frank Marshall said that they are looking to dive back in and develop another sequel. He said:

"I have spoken to them both. Obviously they’re very pleased with how the movie turned out. It’s really about the story, just like on this one, everyone said ‘if you come to us with a good story, we’ll think about it.’
"So right now, we’re taking a pause and then we’re going to dive back in and try to find a story. We did leave it wide open at the end of the movie to continue on in Bourne’s world so we’ll see what we can come up with."

We heard this whole "waiting for the right story" thing for years with Greengrass and Damon before they made Jason Bourne, which is weird because the story wasn't really all that interesting. If they did another film it'd be hard to do any worse than that in my opinion.

As far as Jeremy Renner's Bourne Legacy spinoff goes, that sounds less likely to get a sequel. When asked about the possibility of seeing the Aaron Cross character come back, he said:

“Probably not. I don’t know. That story is still out there as well but it’s not… we’re not talking about it.”

So you can definitely count that sequel out. As much as I didn't like Jason Bourne, I'm still a fan of the franchise, and if they made another one, I'd be there to see it.
