The Harley Quinn and Birds of Prey Spinoff Gets a TRANSFORMERS Screenwriter

The writer of the Transformers Bumblebee spinoff film, Christina Hodson, has been hired by Warner Bros. and DC Films to write the script for Margot Robbie’s Suicide Squad spinoff movie that centers on Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey.

I loved Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, and I’m excited that she is going to get her own spinoff movie. There aren’t really any details released for the film yet, but Batgirl, Black Canary, Huntress, and Lady Blackhawk will most likely be involved with it in some capacity.

It’ll be interesting to see what kind of story they have planned for this film and how they will utilize these characters. They definitely have a lot to play with, and it has the potential to be a lot of fun.

Apparently, Hodson is a talented screenwriter. Not only has she scripted the upcoming Bumblebee movie, but she’s also made the Black List of best unproduced screenplays three times over the past four years. That’s not an easy achievement.

It seems like a good place to start the development of this project, and It’ll be fun to see where it goes.

New Trailer For Mark Wahlberg's Boston Marathon Bombing Film PATRIOTS DAY

A new trailer has been released for Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg's upcoming film Patriots Day. It's a powerful trailer for the film, which tells the true story of the tragic Boston Marathon bombing that took place back in 2013. Three civilians were killed in the attack and 264 others were injured. The movie not only centers on the attack but also the intense manhunt that followed to capture the people responsible.

Berg is a solid filmmaker and I've really enjoyed his last couple of films that include Lone Survivor and Deepwater Horizon. He's really good at capturing the American spirit in these films in which people have to courageously come together in the face of terror and danger.

In the aftermath of an unspeakable attack, Police Sergeant Tommy Saunders (Mark Wahlberg) joins courageous survivors, first responders and investigators in a race against the clock to hunt down the bombers before they strike again. Weaving together the stories of Special Agent Richard DesLauriers (Kevin Bacon), Police Commissioner Ed Davis (John Goodman), Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese (J.K. Simmons) and nurse Carol Saunders (Michelle Monaghan) this visceral and unflinching chronicle captures the suspense of one of the most sophisticated manhunts in law enforcement history and celebrates the strength of the people of Boston.

As you can see, the movie has a pretty incredible cast and it's set to be released in Boston, New York, and L.A. on December 21st and it gets a wide release on January 13, 2017.

Millie Bobby Brown Says She Wants To Be in STAR WARS and THE WALKING DEAD

Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown says that she's interested in playing a role in both The Walking Dead or Star Wars. Of course — who wouldn't want to be in those properties?! I'm not sure how she would fit within TWD, but I definitely could see her playing a young Rey in the new Star Wars saga. In fact...I'm thinking we should start a movement to get Millie Bobby Brown cast as "young Rey" in any relevant flashbacks! The actress talks about her dream roles at 3:21 in this video, and thanks to Comicbook for finding this!

USA Orders Crime Drama Based On Murders of Tupac and Biggie Smalls

The book will once again be opened on two of the biggest murders in rap history. THR reports that USA has ordered episodes for Unsolved, a new show which will focus on the police investigations following the murders of both Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls. Anthony Hemingway, who was behind The People vs. OJ Simpson, will direct and executive produce the show.

I'm curious as to how the show will tackle these situations, as there are several different points of view to how the investigation was handled and who did what. The show should debut in 2017. Will you be watching?

Why are we as geeks so excited about alternative posters for films? Don't get me wrong, I get it because I get just excited as you guys when we post some random alternative poster for a film...but why is that? While How Stuff Works doesn't necessarily give an answer, it does provide some insight to the phenomena and why it's profitable for companies like Dark Hall Mansion and Mondo to continue making these posters! Plus they talk to Tom Whalen, who's like, the alternative poster art god.

Now I want to buy a poster:

Disney and Lucasfilm have released an IMAX poster for director Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. In my opinion, this is the best-looking poster that's been released so far because it actually looks like someone put some thought and effort in trying to do something different and unique. I also included a few other posters and banners for the film that have been released over the past week.

Make sure to catch up on all the trailers that have been released for the film and all the news we've reported on here. There's a lot of cool stuff to check out. I'm pumped up about this movie and I can't wait to see how the story plays out. We've got the gist of what the story is about, but I'm sure that there are going to be some cool and surprising twists and turns that we don't see coming.

Rogue One comes out on December 16th!

Hear How The Band Earth, Wind, and Fire Inspired The T-Rex Scene From JURASSIC PARK

Even if you haven't seen Jurassic Park all the way through, everyone is familiar with the T-Rex scene. The jeep is dark, it's raining, and amongst the rumbling, you hear a cup of water is vibrating. It's such a small thing but it's become an iconic piece of filmmaking and now we know the story as to how it came to be thanks to Great Big Story

Supposedly, the idea came to Steven Spielberg as he was blasting Earth, Wind, and Fire in his car and noticed that his rearview mirror was vibrating. He then immediately called the effects designers and said he needed that and a cup of water to vibrate in the car as the T-Rex approached!

Learn more about how they made it happen in the video below.

Now the next question...which song was Spielberg blasting in his car?

New Featurette Takes You Behind The Scenes of SUICIDE SQUAD With Joker and Harley Quinn

By now, you've all made up your minds about Warner Bros. and DC Films' Suicide Squad, but there's been a pretty even divide of opinions about the film here at GeekTyrant. I hated it, and Joey loved it. (Shocking, right?) We don't need to rehash those arguments for the millionth time here now, so I'll skip the editorializing and just jump straight to the reason for this article: a new behind the scenes featurette from the film's upcoming home video release that focuses on Jared Leto's Joker and his messed up relationship with Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn. Actually, to be more precise, it's less about the relationships of the characters as it is about the relationships of the actors themselves, with Leto's deep Method technique making scenes unpredictable for both the crew and Robbie herself.

Suicide Squad hits Blu-ray on December 13, 2016.

DreamWorks Animation Cancels THE CROODS Sequel After Three Years of Work

After three and a half years of work on The Croods 2, DreamWorks Animation has killed the prehistoric sequel. Variety says that thirty animators will now be looking for new jobs, and they say that there's been some trouble brewing behind the scenes on the film since this summer, when its original 2017 release date was pushed back to 2018.

When Comcast bought DreamWorks Animation in April of this year, it put the hierarchy at Universal Studios in charge of the toon studio founded by Jeffrey Katzenberg. Individuals at both DreamWorks and Universal said doubts had been raised about proceeding with “Croods 2″ even before Universal was put in charge. Two sources said that Universal was effectively just ratifying a decision already made by DreamWorks Animation to kill the movie.

The first film ended up making $587 million worldwide on a $135 million budget, so on paper, it sounds like that'd be enough to get a sequel up and running. But do you know anyone who's ever mentioned wanting to see The Croods 2? It's not a film that captured the zeitgeist or had any sort of lasting impact on pop culture, and since it's been three years since the original, I can't imagine there's a huge groundswell of people who are still yearning to see more.

However, a source did tell Variety:

"‘The Croods’ is still very much in the DreamWorks catalog. It’s not unheard of that it might be something someone takes a look at in the future."

I wouldn't be surprised if they ended up making a kid's show for Netflix with these characters one day down the line. What do you think? Are you bummed about this news? Were you looking forward to The Croods 2?

Watch: Ryan Reynolds Gets Roasted By His "Twin" Brother Gordon

In a weird but hilarious video by GQ, Ryan Reynolds get roasted by his "twin" brother. Obviously, Reynolds doesn't actually have a twin, but it's so much funnier to believe he has a brother who absolutely hates everything about him! Reynolds asks Reynolds questions like "Why such a c***?" and other great things that we think deserve an answer. There's also a surprise cameo that I think you just have to watch to appreciate! Good stuff.

Here's The Interesting Connection Between DEADPOOL and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2

$

Five minutes ago, I would not have been able to guess that there was a connection between Deadpool and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. One is an irreverent, hard R-rated, ultra-violent, Earth-centric, meta movie about one main character, while the other appears to be a more offbeat yet still populist-leaning ensemble that continues the adventures of an unorthodox team of good-hearted space pirates. But according to The Playlist, the connection is real.

Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds and co-writer Paul Wernick appeared at a Q&A for the film this past weekend, and they spoke about now Marvel Studios had to get involved in the production and swap the rights for Negasonic Teenage Warhead with Kurt Russell's Ego The Living Planet from Guardians 2.

"We were looking down the list of the 400 [‘X-Men’] characters that Fox owns, and NTW jumped out and we were like, ‘yes. I don’t care what her powers are. She’s gonna be in the movie.’"
Owing to their superficial reasons for adding Negasonic Teenage Warhead to the Deadpool cast in the first place, Reese and Wernick elected to eschew essentially everything but the character’s name in the film script, even imbuing her with an entirely different set of powers (in the comics, she is psychic as opposed to literally explosive). For that, Fox was forced to get the okay from Marvel Studios, initiating a superhero swap between the studios whose results will next be seen in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. “Kurt Russell [‘s Ego the Living Planet] in the new Guardians movie was the character that Fox swapped with Marvel to [change] Negasonic Teenage Warhead powers,” explained Wernick.

It's cool to hear that Marvel and Fox can come to agreements like this. Many fans are hoping that Fox eventually strikes some kind of co-production deal with Marvel so the comic book giants can finally get a good Fantastic Four movie released, and small deals like this have to be considered positive steps (however small) that could theoretically pave the way for larger deals to happen in the future.

The full article is a must-read for Deadpool fans, and among other things, it talks about the ill-fated Green Lantern movie and how Reynolds recorded some actual screen-used audio for Deadpool on his iPhone.

Supercut: Crowds of People in Superhero Movies Staring Up in Awe

Sploid points us to a supercut video from editor LJ Frezza at Fandor that collects a bunch of shots of innocent bystanders from superhero films staring up in awe at the superheroes (or the supervillains they battle) above the city. You see shots like these in almost every superhero movie today, regardless of which studio produces it, but I think the best thing about this video is pointing out how Sam Raimi did the best job of anyone (so far) at turning these bland crowds into actual people by giving them some agency in his Spider-Man movies. Check out what I mean below:

Natalie Portman Shines in Powerful New JACKIE Trailer

Fox Searchlight has just unveiled the brand new trailer for Jackie, the biopic starring Natalie Portman as former First Lady Jackie Kennedy and what happens to her in the wake of JFK's assassination. The movie has been getting great reviews from the festival circuit, and it looks like one hell of a powerful drama. Could this be the movie that earns Portman her second Oscar? We'll find out about awards soon enough, but in the meantime, I'm just interested in seeing the movie itself.

Jackie hits theaters on December 2, 2016.

The Rock is Still Considering Running For President in 2020

In addition to being one of the biggest movie stars in the world, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has long had close ties to the American military. He was one of the first civilians to know about the assassination of bin Laden, and he's been a proud supporter of the troops and our veterans for years, recently working with his production company on Rock The Troops, a new special on Spike TV that airs next month in which he and some of his friends perform for 45,000 of our soldiers overseas.

Countdown is on.. join us for the BIGGEST MILITARY EVENT EVER of its kind on American soil. 45,000+ troops and their families having one of the best nights and me and my buddies having the privilege to entertain them and say "THANK YOU". Join us December 13th on @spiketv for a truly memorable night. Proud to bring you this one as we had so much fun and made history - TOGETHER. #RockTheTroops🇺🇸

A video posted by therock (@therock) on

But his affinity for the men and women in our military isn't the end of Johnson's political leanings. There's a growing movement that wants to see him run for President, and he appears to be taking the idea seriously. In March, he tweeted this:

And back in June, he told British GQ the following:

"I'll be honest, I haven't ruled politics out. I'm not being coy when I say that, but at the moment I am not sure. I can't deny that the thought of being governor, the thought of being president, is alluring. And beyond that, it would be an opportunity to make a real impact on people's lives on a global scale.

So where does he stand on the matter today, in the wake of Donald Trump winning the presidency last week? Vanity Fair asked him, and here was his reply:

“I wouldn't rule it out,” Johnson, 44, told Vanity Fair with a big smile after speaking at a press conference to promote his latest film Moana in Los Angeles on Sunday. “It would be a great opportunity to help people, so it’s possible. This past election shows that anything can happen.”

Of course, people would need to get a better idea of his policy ideas before they turned out to vote for The Rock, but as last week's election revealed, a large portion of our country doesn't give a shit if you've never held public office before in your life and have absolutely zero political experience. Here's hoping The Rock actually follows through on these insinuations, because I'm very interested in what he might be able to do for the country if he were to actually take a run at the White House.

HBO Has Renewed WESTWORLD For Season 2, But It Probably Won't Air Until 2018

Update: EW has an interview with HBO president of programming Casey Bloys, who actually did reveal some surprising news about Westworld. It's not that the show has been renewed for season 2, but that fans will probably have to wait until 2018 to see it:

My suspicion is sometime in ‘18 because of how big the world is and what goes into shooting it. So I don’t have exactly, they’re going to have to map it out and write the scripts, but my guess is sometime in ‘18.

Original article follows.

In news that should not come as a shock to anyone, this morning HBO officially renewed its popular sci-fi series Westworld for a second season.

Often, it's easy for me to get lost in my bubble and think that a show is super popular simply because a lot of people are writing about it on pop culture websites. But just because a show inspires a lot of coverage doesn't necessarily mean that translates to a decent audience of normals watching at home. Luckily for HBO, they've happened to hit the jackpot with a show which a lot of people pore over every frame as if it's a religious text and one that regular people at home also just enjoy watching: the network's press release touts that Westworld is averaging a gross audience of 11.7 million viewers, which means it's outperforming both Game of Thrones and True Detective during similar times in their first seasons.

For me, the show has hinted at tremendous potential but its execution has been extremely frustrating so far. (I haven't seen last night's episode yet, so that may end up changing my mind in some regard.) The showrunners stopped production midway through the first season, supposedly to map out five seasons' worth of plot and story, and if they keep those numbers up, I'm guessing it won't be hard for them to reach that goal. Are you all still watching Westworld? What do you think about it?

HBO is Still Pursuing a GAME OF THRONES Prequel Series

$

It's no secret HBO is desperate to keep telling stories in Westeros well beyond when Game of Thrones comes to an end. The network has been dropping hints about wanting a spinoff show for a very long time, and now we have a brand new update, which essentially boils down to: yep, they still want a spinoff.

EW caught up with HBO president of programming Casey Bloys, who said the network is still in talks with author George R.R. Martin about ideas for a follow-up show.

"I would say it’s still kind of preliminary ongoing talks. There are areas we are exploring, but I wouldn’t point to any one and say, ‘This is what we’re going to do.’"

Martin himself previously spoke about the possibility of a prequel show:

"I do have thousands of pages of fake history of everything that led up to Game of Thrones. There’s a wealth of material there, and I’m still writing more....At the moment, we still have this show to finish, and I still have two more books to finish.”

If — let's face it...when — a prequel show is eventually given the greenlight, we know that current showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss aren't interested in coming back for more:

“You might want to ask George about that...It’s a great world that George created. It’s a very rich world. I’m sure there will be other series set in Westeros. But for us, this is it.”

Another idea that's caused a lot of talk online has been the notion of closing out the story with a Game of Thrones theatrical feature film instead of letting the series end naturally on TV. (Last year, we saw how terribly that worked with Entourage.) But thankfully, it doesn't sound as if Bloys is interested in making people pay for a movie ticket to see how the show will end. In the same interview in which he talked about how they're still exploring ideas for a prequel, he said this about the possibility of a movie:

“I want everything I can get for HBO, I’ll just leave it at that.”

Game of Thrones returns in 2017 for its seventh season, which is rumored to consist of seven episodes. Its eighth season is supposed to be its last, and as of now, that season is only supposed to contain six episodes.

Y: THE LAST MAN TV Adaptation Finds a Showrunner at FX

$

If you're into comic books and were alive in the early 2000s, you'll remember that people couldn't stop talking about Y: The Last Man. That was for good reason: it's one of the best comics ever written, and Hollywood has been trying to crack a film adaptation ever since it debuted. After a bunch of directors flirted with the property and came close to landing on a take they liked, the project moved to FX last year. Now the network has finally found a showrunner they think will be able to shepherd the property across the finish line.

THR reports that Michael Green, the man who is currently co-showrunning Neil Gaiman's upcoming series American Gods at Starz, will be the one bringing Y: The Last Man to life. He has tons of writing credits to his name, including the upcoming Murder on the Orient Express remake, Blade Runner 2049, Alien: Covenant, Logan, Green Lantern, and on the TV side, Smallville and Heroes.

We've been writing about potential adaptations of this property for so long, I had completely forgotten that FX was developing it into a show. Barring a show at HBO (or simply leaving it to stand on its own as one of the best comics ever), this is probably the next best thing for Y. I can't wait to see what they do with it.

For those who don't know what the comic is about, A) I implore you to track it down for yourself and read the whole thing, because it's truly awesome, and B) if you can't do that for whatever reason, here's THR's synopsis:

Y: The Last Man ranks as one of the most beloved and critically acclaimed comic book series of all time. The Vertigo title was first launched in 2002 and revolves around Yorick Brown — the last surviving human with a Y chromosome — and his Capuchin monkey, Ampersand. The series follows escape artist Yorick after the mysterious plague as he sets out to find what might have wiped out the world's male chromosomes. The series, written and created by Vaughan and artist Pia Guerra, ran for 60 issues and has been collected in multiple graphic novels.
