The Purge has become a yearly institution in theaters, with small-budget films racking up big money at the box office as people flock to the cinema to witness what happens when all crimes, including murder, are made legal for one twelve hour period. But the man who's responsible for this franchise is now saying that fans may not have to wait a year between movies for much longer: it sounds like The Purge is getting a TV series of its own.

In an interview with CinemaBlend, writer/director James DeMonaco confirmed that a show is in the works, ideally for cable:

Yes! Not an anthology... I guess kind of an anthology -- more of an interwoven anthology. They came to me about a TV show, my idea is that you do six or seven storylines. And I would kind of intercut them, use flashbacks.

The idea of why I like the idea of a maybe 10 hour TV thing on this, the one thing you really can't do on the films is, just because of mere real estate and time, is you can't get into the nuance and complexity that would drive someone to commit a terrible act on this night. Whether it's revenge or out of passion, but what might be interesting in a TV show is with a flashback narrative, if you start on Purge Night but you go back to show how people have gotten to where they are. Where you see a couple that's gone haywire on this night, but let's show everything that's led up to this moment of a husband trying to kill a wife -- the cheating or the accusations of cheating or money problems. It will be interesting to show those arcs, those dramatic and complex arcs that get people to where they pick up a gun or a knife and kill someone else. I think there's something cool that we can do with the real estate of TV -- 10 hours, potentially.

As for when we'll actually see that show, CB asked if it might be within a year or so and DeMonaco was optimistic about that chance:

I think so, dude, yeah! They're far ahead on the TV front... pretty far ahead. Not to get into the nuance of how it all goes down, we're talking about deals right now, money is being spoken about. Things like that. So I think it's being taken very seriously from the higher-ups who obviously dictate everything.

That's exciting news for fans of the film series, and even for those who like the concept of the show but wish the movies had been able to dig into the premise a little more. I didn't get a chance to see The Purge: Election Year, but I liked The Purge: Anarchy way more than the first movie because of the way it expanded that franchise's universe. With much more time to deal with in a television series (presumably in addition to more movies), they could dive deeper not only the mythology behind how the Purge came to be, but as DeMonaco says, into characters' mindsets on Purge night...and that may be the most promising aspect of the franchise as a whole.

It's nearly the weekend, which means it's a perfect opportunity to run to the local flea market and get a longsword. Once you get said longsword, you can watch this video and become a master in no time! What else do you have to do this weekend? 

Turns out the battles in Game of Thrones aren't exactly accurate in terms of combat. Don't worry, this guy sets them straight.

I read Neil Gaiman's American Gods right around the time they announced a TV show was in the works, and I hesitate to say this because I know the book is well-liked, but I thought it was a little slow and didn't do quite as much with its intriguing premise as I hoped it would. But that beautiful first trailer has me convinced to give the show a shot and hopeful that the action will play out much better in live action than it did on the page. With showrunner Bryan Fuller behind it, I'm confident it will be a great series.

We haven't heard much about the show since that trailer debuted at Comic-Con, but now Nerdist has heard that a certain character is going to have a much larger role in the show than he did in the book. Turn back now if you don't want to know what may happen.

The site's sources claim that Mad Sweeney, a leprechaun played by The Wire and Orange is the New Black actor Pablo Schreiber, is the one with the expanded role. In Gaiman's book, Sweeney disappears for a long stretch of time before he reunites with the lead character, Shadow. When he meets Shadow for the second time, Sweeney is in a bad place — if I remember correctly, by that point he's essentially a homeless man wandering the Earth. Here's what Nerdist says about the character's bigger role:

That could mean a few things. Mad Sweeney’s magic coin plays a key part Shadow Moon’s story, and we may get to see Sweeney’s search for his beloved coin. Or perhaps we’ll even get to see excerpts from his 4,000 year history—including his journey to America. There is also the possibility that Mad Sweeney will be used as a way to establish origin stories for the gods who came to America, even though he isn’t technically a god himself.

When I heard Schreiber was cast as Mad Sweeney, my first thought was that it was a mistake and he was miscast. But if this report is true and the show really is going to concentrate more on him than the book does, then Fuller must be confident in the actor's performance. We'll see how this all shakes out when American Gods premieres on Starz sometime next year.

The CW is a haven for geeks during the fall season. We have Supernatural, iZombie, the DC shows, and some vampire stuff I don't watch (and even if I did, I wouldn't admit it). The point is that all this starts NEXT WEEK! I feel like it's been forever, but I am so pumped to see all my favorite shows back on the air! 

You'll be just as pumped after watching your favorite stars pal around behind the scenes. 

As soon as it became clear that Jurassic World was going to end up as one of the most financially successful films of all time, it seems like it became "cool" to bash the movie for one reason or another. I had some issues with the movie but still really enjoyed it overall, and I think the GT readership largely shares that opinion (feel free to sound off in the comments either way). I'm certainly not going to shout you down if you didn't like it, because I can totally see why the movie didn't work for some people — especially if you were hoping for some more of those heart-pounding suspense scenes the original Jurassic Park did so well. Good news, though: apparently the sequel will have you covered in that department.

Colin Trevorrow — the man who directed Jurassic World and is co-writing and producing the sequel — spoke with the InGeneral podcast (via Collider) and revealed some more details about Jurassic World 2:

“It will be more suspenseful and scary. It’s just the way it’s designed; it’s the way the story plays out. I knew I wanted [J.A.] Bayona to direct it long before anyone ever heard that was a possibility, so the whole thing was just built around his skillset.”

Trevorrow also confirmed that they're looking to use more animatronics in the sequel than they did in Jurassic World, and explained how that idea begins at the script stage and builds out from there:

“There will be animatronics for sure. We’ll follow the same general rule as all of the films in the franchise, which is the animatronic dinosaurs are best used when standing still or moving at the hips or the neck. They can’t run or perform complex physical actions, and anything beyond that you go to animation. The same rules applied in ‘Jurassic Park.’ I think the lack of animatronics in ‘Jurassic World’ had more to do with the physicality of the Indominus, the way the animal moved. It was very fast and fluid, it ran a lot, and needed to move its arms and legs and neck and tail all at once. It wasn’t a lumbering creature. We’ve written some opportunities for animatronics into [Jurassic World 2]—because it has to start at the script level—and I can definitely tell you that Bayona has the same priorities, he is all about going practical whenever possible.”

And while Vincent D'Onofrio's character wanted to militarize dinosaurs in Jurassic World, it sounds like we shouldn't get our hopes up that someone else will come along and pick up that idea and run with it in the next movie:

“I’m not that interested in militarized dinosaurs, at least not in practice. I liked it in theory as the pipe dream of a lunatic. When that idea was first presented to me as part of an earlier script it was something that the character that ended up being Owen was for, that he supported, something that he was actively doing even at the beginning. [Co-writer] Derek [Connelly] and I, one of our first reactions was ‘No if anyone’s gonna militarize raptors that’s what the bad guy does, he’s insane.’”

Jurassic World 2 opens in theaters on June 22, 2018, and filming is supposed to begin early next year.

As drones continue to gain popularity, you can bet that the geek crowd is going to be marketed to heavily as companies attempt to cash in on the emerging hobby with pop culture-themed drones that will cruise through the skies above us. But when the corporate pandering is this good, it's hard to blame them. Air Hogs is releasing a 27-inch long drone modeled after Star Wars' Millennium Falcon, complete with hyperdrive lights and sounds, and a miniaturized Han Solo and Chewbacca in the cockpit. io9, who pointed this out to us in the first place, has a breakdown of the cost and one more cool feature:

To make it especially easy to fly, the $110 Millennium Falcon drone, which includes a 2.4GHz remote control with a 250-feet range, also features a barometric pressure sensor allowing it to remain locked to a specific altitude at all times. It’s like having an invisible tether that prevents the drone from just completely flying away from you at warp speeds.

Very cool.

The company also has a drone that appears to be a Stormtrooper riding on a speeder bike, but weirdly, that one is $40 more than the Falcon: the speeder bike drone will cost you $150. Find out more here.

I'm hoping to pick up GoPro's newly announced Karma drone sometime in the next few months, but these would be an awesome alternative if you're not looking to do anything too extreme and would just prefer some good old-fashioned backyard fun.

There's no end in sight for The Walking Dead on AMC, and the network has said that they want to try to turn it into a Star Trek-style franchise that has insane longevity. But let's pretend for a second that the show's ratings take a massive dive, and for whatever reason the writers just start pumping out crap season after crap season and the fans completely turn on the show and openly reject it. If that happened, AMC would probably bring the show to an end, and if that goes down, creator Robert Kirkman wants fans to know that the end of the show wouldn't spoil the ending of the comic book because they're going to end in two different ways.

Kirkman appeared on an episode of Kevin Smith's Geeking Out and explained his methodology:

George R.R. Martin collaborated with the Game of Thrones showrunners a while back by giving them a roadmap of how he plans on ending his novel series, so we can expect there to be some crossover when that show ends. But it sounds like Kirkman is making sure fans of The Walking Dead comics and TV series will have two distinctly separate experiences when it comes to those endings.

I like that two-pronged approach, and I sort of hope that Martin is being sneaky and keeping the "real" ending of his A Song of Ice and Fire for himself and his longtime readers. There's just something that feels wrong about a show based on a book (or comic) to come along, get popular, and then beat the books or comics to the punch with the ending and take all the glory.

Here's something I've never thought about before: where did the classic comic book font come from? And since comics used to be hand-drawn by a myriad number of different people, how did a single font become widely recognized and accepted as the defining way to look at the text of an entire medium? Fox is planning to show off some of the first footage from War For The Planet of The Apes at New York Comic Con next week. If you're going to be there, you'll be lucky enough to see it for yourself! In anticipation of the event, the studio has released the first official plot synopsis for the film telling us what the story will be about.

In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.

This sounds like it could be even more insane than the last film! The first two films in the franchise were great and I've been looking forward to seeing what this next chapter would entail. Andy Serkis will reprise his role as Caesar and Woody Harrelson is playing the Colonel that will be going to war with him. When previously talking about the direction of the franchise, director Matt Reeves explained:

"The first one is sort of how [Caesar] goes from humble beginnings to becoming a revolutionary. In 'Dawn,' he really rose to occasion of becoming a leader in really challenging and difficult times. The notion of what we're after with the third is to sort of continue that trajectory and see how he becomes a seminal figure in ape history. He almost becomes sort of like an ape Moses. A mythic status... We're trying to play out those themes and continue to sort of explore it in this universe. Exploring human nature under the guise of apes."

After seeing what has been done with the first two movies, there's no doubt that Reeves is going to give fans another great film that will kick ass. If you are attending NYCC next week, here are the details on the panel:

At New York Comic-Con, 20th Century Fox will debut an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the creation and filming process, as well as offer is never before seen film footage. At the event, director Matt Reeves and producer Dylan Clark will join Andy Serkis on stage to discuss “the unique relationship between performance capture acting and filmmaking.” Attendees can catch the panel on Thursday, October 6th at 8:30 pm, the event will be held at the REGAL E-WALK THEATER on 247 West 42nd Street.

War For The Planet of The Apes will hit theaters on July 14, 2017. The film also stars Steve Zahn, Terry Notary, and Karin Konoval.

This fun piece of fan art comes from Abe Lopez and it features Harley Quinn and Joker on a trip to Disneyland. As you can see, they are making the happiest place on Earth even happier. I love Bruce Wayne in the background eating his pineapple Dole Whip. It'd be so fun to see a cosplay group get together and recreate this image at Disneyland. 

Well, the hottest chip in the world officially exists and it comes from Paqui Chips. It's called the Carolina Reaper Madness chip, and it's heated up with the Carolina Reaper Pepper, which holds the Guinness World Record for hottest pepper on the planet. It also includes ghost pepper and chipotle seasoning. 

The chips are sold individually in a coffin-shaped box and when talking to Mashable, Paqui Chips Brand Manager Jeff Day explained why that is the case:

“…quite honestly, that’s all that you need. That’s all that anyone needs. It’s the hottest chip you’ll ever have, I can guarantee you that. After you eat that one chip, trust me, you’re not looking to dig back into the bag and have a second one.”

It's Batman vs. Batman in this latest fan trailer, which features a fake story in which Christian Bale's version of Batman and Ben Affleck's Batman battle each other. This is pretty fun concept that comes from ScreenRant and I think most of you will enjoy it. This might be the best trailer mashup that they've created so far but it would have worked better if it was a bit shorter. 

If you've been looking for an awesome Black Widow action figure to add to your toy collection, look no further. This 1/6th scale figure was created by Ashley Wood for ThreeA and I love the cool stylized and unique look that it has. 

The figure is 13 inches tall and features 24 points of articulation. It also comes with a faux-leather trench coat, three sets of interchangeable hands, two Glock 17s with holsters, and an interchangeable head that has a mask. I've never seen Black Widow wear a mask like this before, but it still looks cool! Check out some additional photos below.

I've got a fun cosplay mashup here that combines Disney's Snow White with The Rocketeer. The cosplay was created by Amber Arden and the photo was taken by York In A Box. This is actually a really fun mashup. I'm surprised we haven't seen a series of art the mashes together all of the Disney princesses as The Rocketeer. If any artist out there is reading this, make it happen!

Last month, Lucasfilm launched an incredibly fun web mini-series called Star Wars Go Rogue to help promote the upcoming line of toys being released for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. There are four chapters in the stop-motion animated series and you can watch the final two videos that were created below. I really enjoyed what they did with these. They turned out to be really wacky and fun. 

In Chapter 3, the Rebels seek the second instruction book on rain-soaked Eadu, but the Empire has beaten them to the prize. Will they be able to outsmart the scheming Director Krennic to escape with the instructions and their lives?

In the exciting conclusion, the Rebels must rely on their wits, ourage and building skills to rescue one of their own from Director Krennic and escape with the LEGO building instructions. The fate of the Galaxy hangs in the balance.

Some people are completely terrified of clowns and it's easy to see why. Clowns are freakin' creepy, but that what I love about them! Halloween Costumes has put together a fun infographic that breaks down 13 of the scariest clowns featured in film and TV. It does a great job of reminding us of all the insane clowns that have existed. They also have an honorable mention list. 

Why are clowns so terrifying? Is it the blood-red lips? Or the perpetually-smiling mouths? Maybe they terrified us as children, like Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny. For someone with a fear of clowns, often called “coulrophobia”, even the most joyful clowns are downright sinister. And even when they’re actually harmless, clowns can appear unsettling or weird. As far as we’re concerned, all clowns are scary clowns! With this in mind, we looked at the 13 of the most iconic scary clowns in movies and television, along with a number of honorable mentions.

Artist Alberto Moldes is the creator of this radical Princess Mononoke and Dark Souls crossover art. These are two awesome properties and the artist was inspired by the fact that they both come from someone with the last name of Miyazaki. The Dark Souls game was directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki and Princess Mononoke was directed by Hayao Miyazaki. They sure do make a cool mashup!
