Watch: Supergirl Gets Excited in New Superhero Fight Club 2.0 Clip

0
0

Earlier today, we wrote about how The CW heroes of Supergirl, Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow will unite to battle an alien threat in their upcoming crossover episode. Now the network has released a video they've titled "Superhero Fight Club 2.0 Scene" that shows the heroes all coming together in their version of the Danger Room.

Apparently this is just a small taste, and you can see more on the official CW app right here (but that part isn't available on YouTube).

The four-part crossover is scheduled to air this December, but in the meantime, check out the clip below and tell us what you think!

Stunning FORCE OF WILL Anime Anthology Film Trailer Focuses on the Cthulhu Mythos

stunning-force-of-will-anime-anthology-film-trailer-focuses-on-the-cthulhu-mythos

I've got an awesome trailer for an upcoming anime anthology film called Force of Will, which is based on a trading card game of the same name.

The anthology will include six short films that are based on the game, and each film will be helmed by a different director. The particular trailer focuses on one of the shorts that was directed by Shuhei Morita, and it’s based on the Cthulhu mythos.

I may not be familiar with the card game, but I definitely want to watch this movie. If you're not familiar with the game either, here's a description:

In ancient times, there was a land where Gods and Demons would wage war. A land that was graced by the five Elements, Valhalla. After a long period of time, the fighting never ceased, and would repeat itself time after time. Soon enough, the war itself would involve the people living in Valhalla.
The Gods and Demons would then develop techniques to summon and reincarnate strong, radiant souls, into battlers and soldiers to aid them in their cause.
A whisper was heard... "In exchange for your soul, I shall bestow upon you power unimaginable..." In order to pave a new path to a brighter future, people gathered, and made pacts (Judgement) that would grant them new powers.
Those who fight for their own beliefs, those who fight for the Gods, those who fight against the Gods, their spirit drives them into battle, and the battle has just begun.

I love what I'm seeing here. The animation is absolutely stunning, and I can't wait to see what else this film anthology has to offer.

Review: MISS PEREGRINE'S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN Is Dark, Beautiful, and Quirky

0
0

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is the latest film from director Tim Burton, based on the popular young adult novel of the same name by Ransom Riggs. Having never read the book, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but being a big fan of Burton, I was excited to move past the whole Alice in Wonderland fiasco. The fantastic cast was also a big draw: Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, Samuel L. Jackson, Judy Dench, Chris O’Dowd, Rupert Everett, Terence Stamp, and Allison Janney, just to name a few of the awesome actors in this film.

Jacob Portman (Butterfield) is the classic teenage nobody living in boring old Florida, working in a grocery store and generally being ignored by his more popular peers. He grew up listening to his grandfather (Stamp) tell stories about a home for special children where he lived during World War II; stories so fantastic that Jake was convinced they were fictitious until tragedy strikes and Jake ventures to Wales in search of this home and its mysterious caretaker, Miss Peregrine ( Green) to get answers. There, he meets children with unusual and—dare I say—peculiar abilities and discovers he too possesses special abilities inherited from his grandfather that he will need to use to help save these children.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is classic Burton: whimsical story with youthful fantasy and a dark, disturbing twist. The visual elements in this film are nothing short of stunning, as are the costumes, hair, and makeup. There’s even a macabre stop-motion sequence that will make even the most lukewarm Burton fan giddy with nostalgia. However, this film is far from perfect.

As is the case with any book-turned-movie, there is obviously a lot of depth to this story that the movie had to leave out due to time constraints. As a result, the plot is awkward and over-simplified, glossing over intricate nuances of the story with cliche dialogue. This is probably even more apparent to someone who has read the book. It feels a lot like a movie made for children, but at the same time, there was some pretty dark content probably not suitable for a young audience, hence the PG-13 rating. I’m still not sure who the target audience for this film is: very brave children or very childish adults?

I’m not saying I didn’t enjoy this film, because I did. (Childish adult, right here.) Die-hard Burton fans will be able to overlook this film’s flaws and appreciate the dark, beautiful, and sometimes quirky style he brings to the table. My biggest problem with this film, however, is that our beloved Danny Elfman was glaringly absent from the musical score.

Jared Harris to Star in AMC's Awesome-Sounding New Series THE TERROR

AMC is in the process of developing a really cool new series called The Terror, and they've just cast Mad Men's Jared Harris in the lead role.

The series will be an adaptation of a novel by Dan Simmons, the story of which is set in 1847. It follows the real life story of a Naval expedition searching for the Northwest Passage and in the process disappears. The series will take a fictional spin on the events that took place as the crews are attacked by a mysterious predator that stalks the ships.

Harris will play a character named Francis Crozier, "Captain of the HMS Terror and second in command of the expedition. He is a brilliant sailor and captain, but an Irishman who has reached his glass ceiling in the British Royal Navy and has become disillusioned with its pomp and politics."

Joel Stillerman, president of original programming and development for AMC and SundanceTV, said in a statement:

“The story of man’s battle with nature and an unknown predator makes ‘The Terror’ a gripping and imaginative series, and calls for a special kind of actor. We are thrilled to expand our relationship with Jared Harris and look forward to watching him transform into the complex and fascinating character of Captain Crozier. We are also delighted to work with this versatile and talented cast and share with audiences the despair and horror inside this journey of survival, hope and recognition.”

This series has the potential to be amazing! Harris will be joined by Ciaran Hinds (Game of Thrones, Rome) as Sir John Franklin, Paul Ready (Cuffs, Utopia) as Henry Goodsir, and Adam Nagaitis (Houdini and Doyle, Suffragette) as Cornelius Hickey. These characters will play integral members of the crew aboard the ships.

The first season of the series will consist of ten hour-long episodes, and it's being planned as an anthology, which tells us that the second season could be based on a completely different story.

The Terror begins production this winter in Budapest, and it's set to premiere in 2017. I can't wait to see how this turns out!

See the Process of How Black Panther's CGI Costume Was Created in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR FX Reel

0

Not long ago, we learned that Black Panther was 100% CGI in every single frame of Captain America: Civil War. That was a big surprise to learn about! Now you get to see the process of how that was done in a VFX reel that was released by Cinesite. You'll even see that some of the briefest clips that only included parts of his body got a CGI makeover as well. It's pretty damn incredible and fascinating stuff. Of course, the video also shows off some of the other effects work that was done for the film. When talking about the suit, director Joe Russo said:

“[They] really did a ton of work on that outfit. I mean, we had an outfit that we used on set. It’s impossible when you’re talking about an otherworldly outfit like the one that the Panther wears, which has a certain luminescence to it because it’s made of a woven metal. We could never afford to construct an outfit like that that an actor or a stunt player could move around in without sweating to death or that would capture the luminescence that we need. So what we ended up doing in post is ILM came in and painted over Chadwick and the stuntman. The outfit is completely CG.”

Now watch the FX team bring the suit to life in the video below!

M. Night Shyamalan Developing an Animated Comedy Called ELEVEN LITTLE INDIANS

0

M. Night Shyamalan is doing something completely unexpected and is developing an animated TV comedy series for Fox called Eleven Little Indians. He's developing the project with Family Guy writer/producer Alex Carter.

According to Variety, “Eleven Little Indians examines three branches of a large Indian family — one has achieved the American dream; another has just arrived in the U.S. wide-eyed; and the third has gone off the rails."

Shyamalan is mostly known for his dark horror thrillers with twists, but seeing him break out of that and do something completely different like this is cool. I've done my fair share of bashing Shyamalan over the years for his long run of shitty movies, but he completely surprised me with The Visit, which I really enjoyed, and his upcoming thriller, Split, looks pretty great as well.

It looks like Shyamalan has found his groove. Hopefully he can keep it up with his upcoming projects like his Labor of Love film and the Tales From the Crypt series he's working on.

This could end up being a fun series, and I'm curious to see how it turns out.

First Look at The Justice Society of America On DC's LEGENDS OF TOMORROW

The CW has released an official photo DC's Legends of Tomorrow season two featuring The Justice Society of America. The team consists of Stargirl, Obsidian, Commander Steel, Vixen, and Hourman, and they are set to make their debut in episode two, which is appropriately titled "The Justice Society of America" and here's the synopsis:

TEAM WORK — The Legends travel to Nazi-occupied Paris, but find themselves surrounded by the Justice Society of America (AKA JSA.) The Legends discover a time aberration that threatens the JSA, but the JSA wants nothing to do with them or their help. Nevertheless, the Legends force their way into the JSA’s mission to intercept and seize a mysterious package. Nate (Nick Zano) is desperate to prove that he should be part of the team, but he has a secret that he shares with his grandfather Commander Steel (Matthew MacCaull) that might make it difficult. Ray (Brandon Routh) is so focused on impressing the JSA, he puts himself and Vixen (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) in danger. Meanwhile, Stein (Victor Garber) has stepped in as the leader with Rip (Arthur Darvill) gone, but when decisions aren’t being made Sara (Caity Lotz) seems to be the one calling the shots. Dominic Purcell and Franz Drameh also star.

It pretty cool seeing these characters brought to life like this. The costumes are pretty fun. I just wish that Legends of Tomorrow was a better show. I haven't really liked what they've been doing with the series.

DC's Legends of Tomorrow season two will premiere on October 13th. This particular episode is set to air on October 20th.

A Humorous Look Back at the Awful 1997 JUSTICE LEAGUE TV Movie

0

Some of you might not know or remember that in 1997 a TV movie pilot for Justice League of America aired on CBS. The whole thing was garbage and completely terrible in every way. It didn't even feature Batman or Superman! I completely forgot this thing even happened until Mr. Sunday Movies posted a video that takes a look back at the movie and breaks down how bad it really was. I also included the full movie for you to watch if you are interested in checking it out. You might regret wasting your time if you do.

Taika Waititi Moving Forward with WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS TV Spin-Off Series

0
0

Last year we learned that Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement were developing a TV spin-off series inspired by Waititis hilarious vampire mockumentary What We Do In The Shadows. That series has taken a huge step forward as the broadcast funding agency NZ On Air has put up $1 million towards making six 30-minute episodes.

The series will be called Paranormal Event Response Unit, and the story will follow the two naive police officers, Karen and Mike, who originally appeared in the 2014 film. They will attempt to keep residents of the New Zealand capital safe from supernatural beings and all manner of mythical beasts.

During an interview with the New Zealand website Newshub, NZ On Air executive Jane Wrightson said:

"Comedy is serious business and notoriously hard to get right. We are delighted that Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi are bringing their talents to smaller screens."

The series is set to air on the NZ local channel TVNZ 2, but hopefully we will get to see it in the US! I'm sure it will eventually pop up on one of the streaming services out there like Netflix.

Waititi is currently deep in production of Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok, and he's also developing a sequel to What We Do In The Shadows called We're Wolves that will center on the pacifist werewolves.

New Trailer for THE SPACE BETWEEN US Follows the Journey of a Teenage Boy From Mars

A new trailer has been released for the coming-of-age sci-fi drama The Space Between Us, which follows a teenage boy who was born on Mars on his journey to Earth to find love and his father. Asa Butterfield (Ender's Game) plays the boy, and Britt Robertson (Tomorrowland) plays the teenage girl that he falls for.

This looks like an interesting and charming movie that is kind of cheesy. I hope that it turns out to be a decent film, though. It also has a great supporting cast that includes Carla GuginoGary OldmanBD WongJanet Montgomery, and Jenny Gabrielle. Here's a detailed synopsis:

In this interplanetary adventure, a space shuttle embarks on the first mission to colonize Mars, only to discover after takeoff that one of the astronauts is pregnant. Shortly after landing, she dies from complications while giving birth to the first human born on the red planet – never revealing who the father is. Thus begins the extraordinary life of Gardner Elliot – an inquisitive, highly intelligent boy who reaches the age of 16 having only met 14 people in his very unconventional upbringing.

While searching for clues about his father, and the home planet he’s never known, Gardner begins an online friendship with a street smart girl in Colorado named Tulsa. When he finally gets a chance to go to Earth, he’s eager to experience all of the wonders he could only read about on Mars – from the most simple to the extraordinary. But once his explorations begin, scientists discover that Gardner’s organs can’t withstand Earth’s atmosphere.

Eager to find his father, Gardner escapes the team of scientists and joins with Tulsa on a race against time to unravel the mysteries of how he came to be, and where he belongs in the universe.

The Space Between Us will be released on December 16th, 2016

Growing Up Geek: I Spent The Early '90s as an Arcade Rat

0
0

The last couple of Growing Up Geek posts I did were focused on some of the early films that I made when I was growing up. I still have a few I want to share, but I’ve hit a snag with some of the video transfers from DV to DVD to digital. I’ll eventually get these awesomely embarrassing videos up for you to watch, but I want to keep the Growing Up Geek show rolling forward, so here we go!

In the early '90s, I was growing up in Glendale, CA. I spent a lot of time working and hanging out at a local stage theater, going to the movies, hitting up the local comic book store, and spending hours and hours at the local arcade. This article will focus on arcade life, because I was kind of an arcade rat for a few years.

I got my first taste of playing arcade games when I was five years old playing Pac-Man at a cafe that my grandpa used to take me to. You can read about that introduction to video games here. Little did I know that when I entered my teen years, arcades would eat up a ton of my time (not to mention my parents' money).

The local arcade I spent my time in was a little place called Video West Arcade, which was probably haunted. It was a creepy, dark place, but it was filled with lots of awesome classic games that made for some good times and fun memories. All the windows were tinted black, and as soon as you walked in, you were punched in the face with the smell of stinking kids carrying B.O. and quarters. When you walked in and stepped foot on the floor, your shoes would stick on it from all of the snacks and soda that had spilled.

The arcade was filled with all the classic video games of the time, and I spent most of my time playing games like Street Fighter, Virtua Fighter, Splatter House, Star Wars, Gauntlet, Dragons Lair, Area 51, Primal Rage, Sunset Riders, Terminator 2, Samurai Showdown, Killer Instinct, NFL Blitz, Tekken, Mortal Kombat, and more. It was also fun playing the four player games like The Simpsons, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, NBA Jam, or even the six player version of X-Men! It allowed our little group of friends to all play with each other which was always fun.

The arcade I grew up with tried to adapt and survive with the times, but ultimately ended up closing down. It’s hard to find a good arcade these days that still has these awesome older games from the '80s and '90s! But like video stores, arcades mostly just live in the memories of those of us that grew up with them in our lives.

It’s sad that my kids will really never know what it’s like to spend hours on end playing video games in an arcade like many of us did. These days, all the games they want to play are on their sweet-ass consoles and iPads. They don’t have to leave the house to play video games, but they also lose out on the socializing aspect of it. Granted, there are places like Dave and Busters, but it's just not the same.

I met so many cool kids at the arcade and made a lot of friends…and enemies. Of course, there was going to be some kind of drama at the arcade! The temperaments of teenagers get high in the heat of battle, and if some of these kids lost they weren’t very good sports about it. Then heaven forbid you beat someone’s high score! I saw some of these guys throw crazy fits of rage over that kind of shit. I look back at those times now and I can’t help but laugh about it. People still throw fits of rage over video games, it's just in the comfort of their own home now.

I have so many fond memories of my arcade days pumping in quarter after quarter, playing some of the greatest video games ever made. I know many of you grew up with similar arcades in your lives. What are some of your favorite arcade games and some of your favorite memories of hanging out in your local arcade? Sound off in the comment section below!

Daisy Ridley, Michael Pena, Judi Dench and More Cast in MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS

0
0

A ton of A-List celebrities have found their way onto the film adaptation of Agatha Christie's Murder On The Orient Express. THR reports Daisy Ridley, Michael Pena, Judi Dench, and Michelle Pfeiffer have all signed on as the cast for the film, which will be directed by Kenneth Branagh. They're joining the previously-cast Johnny Depp, along with Hamilton's Leslie Odom Jr., Tom Bateman, Derek Jacobi, and Sing Street's Lucy Boynton.

This isn't the first time the novel has made its way to the silver screen, as the popular story has been redone several times in different ways on television, theater, and on film. One of the more popular examples is the 1974 film featuring Sean Connery

Sounds like one of those films they release around the holidays that families can enjoy, but with all this star power, let's hope it's a little more ambitious than that!

PATERSON Trailer: Adam Driver is a Small Town Bus Driver

Adam Driver has been working steadily for years, but the role he's best known for — and may well continue to be for the rest of his life — is the villainous Kylo Ren in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But Driver is returning to his indie film roots in a new movie called Paterson, which has been steadily gaining critical acclaim on the film festival circuit over the past few months.

It's the latest film from director Jim Jarmusch (Only Lovers Left Alive, Dead Man), and in it, Driver plays an introspective bus driver named Paterson who cruises through the small town of Paterson, New Jersey. There doesn't seem to be much more going on plot-wise, but this appears to be more of a character study than a plot-heavy film, which is fine because that means we'll get to see Driver really digging into the nuances of this character.

Japanese Band BABYMETAL Getting Its Own Anime

0
0

Japanese band Babymetal first gained national attention when a metal group headed up by three high school girls made its way onto the Billboard World Charts at number 1. It really has to be seen to experienced:

Now that they've gained national acclaim, the band is getting their own anime! Billboard reports Warner Bros. will be developing an anime with live-action segments based on the three lead girls. Here's a description for the show:

The series will follow animated versions of members Yui Mizuno (“Yuimetal”), Suzuka Nakamoto (“Su-metal”) and Moa Kikuchi (“Moametal”) as they join together to save the metal genre from a lonely god named Kitsune.

Quick fact: Babymetal is the first Japanese artist to have made the Billboard charts in 50 years. Only Japan could have produced something as goofy and gimmicky as this! Then again, is it really a gimmick if people like it? I'm listening to their album right now and it's pretty solid!
