Legacy Effects Releases Fun Video Highlighting Some of Their Amazing Work

You may not recognize Legacy Effects by name, but you've unquestionably seen their stuff. They've worked on movies like Iron Man, Pacific Rim, The Revenant, Jurassic World, and Avatar, and their work encompasses suit creation, character design, makeup effects and a lot more. Here, take a look:

The last video they released was last year for Terminator Genisys, but now they've put out a new one that was created for their panel at last week's San Diego Comic-Con. (Now THAT'S a panel I wish I could have attended.) It's a fun fake commercial for their services that pretends all of the movies they've worked on take place in the same universe. It really boils down to me liking what they do and looking for an excuse to tell you a little bit about them, and this video gave me the excuse to do that. Check it out and let us know what you think below.

Biblioclast: Ep. 3.7 — A Wild Sheep Chase Sheep Man

This is the last of our episodes on the narrative of Murakami's novel: the Wild Sheep Chase Sheep Man. We have decided this character seems to be a cross between a Marvel super hero and Gollum. Somehow we get talking about the Russo-Japanese War (it almost makes sense - just listen), vampires, and (once again) Star Wars. Along the way there's a totally not boring discussion of some quirks in the English translation. Listen on PodTyrant

3 Chilling Teasers for AMERICAN HORROR STORY Season 6

We’re still not exactly sure what the sixth season of American Horror Story will entail, but FX has released three grisly promo teasers that should spark some excitement in fans of the series. As expected, the teasers are absolutely bizarre.

One teaser features a farmhouse with smoke rising from the chimney that forms a bizarre question mark-like symbol. Over the visual we hear the sound of a chainsaw buzzing and a woman’s screams. The next clip shows some menacing looking knives and other uncomfortable looking objects dangling over what I assume is a baby crib and then a monstrous hand pops in a grabs the knife. The final promo shows a woman’s feet running down a metal staircase as hands come out trying to grab her.

I’m a big fan of this series, and I’m excited to see what this next season will entail. Check out the promos and let the speculation begin!

Striking Full Trailer for Ben Affleck's THE ACCOUNTANT

Warner Bros. has released the full trailer for Ben Affleck's upcoming new thriller, The Accountant. The movie comes from director Gavin O'Connor, who previously directed The Warrior, and it has an incredible supporting cast that includes Anna Kendrick, J.K. Simmons, Jon Bernthal, Jeffrey Tambor, and John Lithgow.

The full trailer gives us a better look at the story and the other characters that will drive that story forward. I really like the concept for this film, and I love the tone and vibe. On top of that, the cinematography looks outstanding. Everything that's been released for this film so far points to it being great, and I'm pretty excited about checking it out.

Christian Wolff (Affleck) is a math savant with more affinity for numbers than people. Behind the cover of a small-town CPA office, he works as a freelance accountant for some of the world’s most dangerous criminal organizations. With the Treasury Department’s Crime Enforcement Division, run by Ray King (J.K. Simmons), starting to close in, Christian takes on a legitimate client: a state-of-the-art robotics company where an accounting clerk (Anna Kendrick) has discovered a discrepancy involving millions of dollars. But as Christian uncooks the books and gets closer to the truth, it is the body count that starts to rise.

The Accountant is set to be released on November 4th.

Jared Leto Talks About Following Heath Ledger’s Portrayal of The Joker

Heath Ledger’s version of the Joker was incredible. Fans complained when he was initially cast, but he ended up giving a mind-blowing performance,.  It was so good that he actually won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for it. When Jared Leto was initially cast in the role I thought it was a solid casting choice, but I didn’t envy him for having to follow Ledger’s legendary act.

As you know from what we’ve seen, Leto definitely made the character his own. His version of The Joker is unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. During a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Leto talked about Ledger’s performance and how he felt about following it:

"Heath did an impeccable, perfect performance as the Joker. It's one of the best performances ever in cinema. I had met Heath before. I didn't know him well, but he was a beautiful person."

He went on to talk about why he felt it was ok for him to pick up the mantle of The Joker and bring the character back to life again:

"I think had it only been portrayed by Heath and it was never a comic book, maybe I would have felt that would be inappropriate. But I thought that given the history, it was OK. The good thing about other people having done this is that you know what direction not to head in."

The actor then discussed how he prepared for the role and how he wanted to become comfortable with acts of violence. Apparently he just watched a shit-ton of real life violent crimes on Youtube:

"The Joker is incredibly comfortable with acts of violence. I was watching real violence, consuming that. There's a lot you can learn from seeing it. Not every act of violence is committed with frenzy, either. I remember learning that. People can be calm. They've made their choice and go and do something, and it's not in a frenzy. It's methodical and sometimes even hypnotic and deliberate."

I know we’ve seen a good amount of footage of The Joker already, but fans are still incredibly curious to see him in his full glory in the movie and how different this Joker will be from previous versions. Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 5th.

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING - Tech for Spider-Man and The Vulture’s Suits Teased by Jon Watts

Spider-Man is going to get a few new upgrades to his suit in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and he’s probably going to need them to battle The Vulture, who is going to have a high tech suit of his own. We got a brief look at The Vulture’s costume in the footage we saw at Comic-Con, and it looks pretty damn menacing.

During an interview with Collider, director Jon Watts offered a few new details on The Vulture’s suit and teased its connection to the story:

"It's a very tech based approach to how The Vulture would build a wing suit and how he would fly. It's not just a cool design, it's a big part of the story. That I can't give away, but there's some cool stuff that goes along with that."

It’s hard to tell what exactly he means by that, but maybe it’s connected to the other rumored villain in the movie, The Tinkerer. He could be the guy who supplies Spider-Man’s rogue gallery of villains with the tech to fight him. When asked about why Marvel decided against making The Vulture a metahuman, Watts added:

"From the very beginning, we wanted to try to keep it tech based just to keep it different initially from what we had seen before. Just getting away from anything that was too similar to [the past], and it sets up a really cool thing that I don't want to talk about yet! It's gonna be awesome."

What’s that really cool thing he doesn’t want to talk about!? I hate when they say stuff like that! I can’t even begin to speculate what it could be.

In a separate interview with ComicBook.com, Watts briefly teased Spider-Man’s new suit and some of other the unknown surprises that it contains:

"Well, the suit that Spidey was given in Civil War is a Stark suit, so you have to wonder with a Stark suit, what else can it do?"

It’s already been rumored that that the suit could include the classic web-wings, but other than that, we’re not sure what other kind of Stark tech the suit entails. Now it's just going to be a long wait before we see what exactly Watts is teasing in these interviews.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will be released on July 7th, 2017.

THE WALKING DEAD Will Be a Completely Different Show When Season 7 Hits Thanks to Negan

The introduction of Negan is going to have an epically huge effect on The Walking Dead. it going to be bigger than I think anyone is expecting. I know most fans are just worried about who ended up being murdered at the end of season six, but that’s just the beginning. There is so much more insanity coming.

In fact, during a recent interview with EW, Jeffrey Dean Morgan talked about how The Walking Dead is going to be a completely different show now. He explains that it’s a whole new beginning and that some of the characters we’ve come to know and love over the years will meet their demise. I was actually pretty shocked by this comment he made:

“What you’re going to see in the first half of this season is Negan wreaking havoc. And some of your characters that you’ve grown to love are not going to be on the show anymore, and it’s going to end badly for them. It’s going to be a whole new beginning for The Walking Dead. Really, we’ve taken the show and just flipped it upside down. It’s a different show now. It’s going to have a different feeling. You’re going to see your favorite characters in a position that they’ve never been in before, which is super vulnerable and victimized.”

To put it bluntly, Morgan added:

“It’s a reset on The Walking Dead world. It’s fucking Negan’s world now.”

Damn! I guess we know what we can expect now. We may not know who dies yet, but in a way it doesn't really matter because the whole dynamic of the series is about to completely change, and I can’t wait to see that change take place. What do you all think about Morgan’s comments here?

The Walking Dead season seven is set to premiere on October 23rd. Prepare for absolute insanity!

Stop what you’re doing right now and spend the next 28 seconds watching an insanely cool animated short based on Marvel’s Rocket Raccoon & Groot comic. This is probably going to be the best thing that you’ll watch all day. The animation is spectacularly beautiful, and I wish so much that this would be an actual animated series because I’d watch the shit out of it! This video is just a brief incredible tease of what could be with the right talent behind a project like this. This is better than anything Marvel has done with animation in years. The short was directed by Arnaud Delors, and you are 100% going to love what he’s done with these two lovable badass characters.

Legendary Is Developing an Adaptation of the Video Game LIFE IS STRANGE

Legendary Digital Studios and Square Enix have teamed up to adapt the hit video game Life Is Strange as a digital series. The game is an episodic, the story of which follows a photography enthusiast named Max Caulfield, “a high-school senior who discovers she can rewind time while saving her best friend Chloe Price. The pair soon find themselves investigating the mysterious disappearance of fellow student Rachel Amber, which uncovers a dark side to life in their town, Arcadia Bay.”

The project is being developed and produced by Dmitri Johnson and Dan Jevons of dj2 Entertainment. They previously worked on an animated series called Skulls of the Shogun for Legendary-owned Nerdist Industries, as well as the upcoming film adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog for Sony Pictures.

Greg Siegel, senior vp of development and production for Legendary Digital Studios had this to say in a statement:

Life is Strange really differs from what people think of gaming. Because there’s such a focus on character, there’s an emotional connection to the story that doesn’t happen with other games.”

This is an incredible game that you’ve gotta check out if you haven’t already. That’s also proven by the 75 Game of the Year awards that it’s won over the years including the BAFTA for best story, the Peabody Award, the Golden Joystick's Performance of the Year, and the Game Awards Games for Impact Award.

Life is Strange is definitely a game that has the potential to be a great series if it’s handled right. I’m not really familiar with the work of Johnson and Jevons, but I’m looking forward to seeing what they do with this franchise.

Powerful First Trailer for Mel Gibson's WWII Drama HACKSAW RIDGE

Mel Gibson has made some incredible films throughout the course of his career. His next project is a World War II drama called Hacksaw Ridge, and it tells the true story of a soldier named Desmond Doss who went to war to help and serve his country... without a weapon and never firing a single bullet while in the heat of battle.

Lionsgate released the first trailer for this film today, and it's incredibly moving and inspirational. It looks like Gibson has made taken this powerful story and adapted it into a stunning looking film.

The battle that the movie will focus on is the Battle of Okinawa, which was a three-month military assault mission called Operation Iceburg. “Hacksaw Ridge” was the name given to one of the locations of a brutal battle in which the U.S. troops faced off against Japanese soldiers on the rocky cliffs of Okinawa. You will get a taste of that in the trailer, and it looks pretty frightening.

The movie stars Andrew Garfield, Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer, Hugo Weaving, Rachel Griffiths, and Vince Vaughn. Here's the synopsis:

HACKSAW RIDGE is the extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss [Andrew Garfield] who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. As an army medic, he single-handedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers. Doss was the first conscientious objector awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Hacksaw Ridge will be released in theaters on November 4th.

Visually Stunning Trailer for Matt Damon's Fantasy Film THE GREAT WALL

I've been hearing a lot of great things about Matt Damon's upcoming film The Great Wall, and today Legendary Pictures released the first trailer to show us what they've got. The trailer doesn't offer much on the story, but it's loaded with some awesome visuals.

The story is set around the construction of The Great Wall of China, but there's also a fantasy element to it as the warriors will be battling giant creatures. The only story description we get for the film right now is the following:

The Great Wall tells the story of an elite force making a valiant stand for humanity on the world’s most iconic structure.

The film was directed by Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers), and it's the first English-language production for him. It's also the largest film ever shot entirely in China. The Great Wall also stars Jing Tian, Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe, and Andy Lau.

If you've seen any of the films that Yimou has made, then you know that he's an awesome visual storyteller. The movie is scheduled to be released in theaters on February 17th, 2017, and I can't wait to see more from the film!

Kevin Feige Says SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Sequels Might Use HARRY POTTER Approach

$

I wasn't in Hall H during Marvel Studios' Comic-Con presentation last Saturday, but it sounds like the footage they showed from Jon Watts' upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming really tore the roof off the place (watch the panel here). We knew Sony and Marvel cast a young actor in Tom Holland because they wanted to give us a look at a teenaged Spider-Man that we hadn't seen on film before, and with fandom being what it is, some are already looking past Homecoming and wondering what the future holds for the web-slinger on the big screen. Collider spoke with Kevin Feige, who revealed that they're going to be modeling this franchise on another super-successful film series:

"Should we be able to make more after that? Sure. This is sophomore year, is the next one junior year? Is the next one senior year? Is there a summer break between each of those? I don’t know what, but it was sort of how do we do a journey for Peter not dissimilar for what the students of Hogwarts would go through each of their years, which was one of the early ideas we had for the movies."

So it sounds like plans aren't 100% set in stone quite yet, but we all know Feige has ideas for movies that literally go all the way into 2025 at this point. If Homecoming comes out in 2017, that means we could conceivably get a new Spider-Man solo movie every year or two for a decade after that, finishing with Peter as a 25-year-old (Tom Holland would be 31 by then). Who knows: anything is possible in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it's cool that Feige seems to be modeling these films after the Harry Potter movies, which never went more than two years without a film from the franchise's start to finish. What do you think?

Disney is Officially Rebooting THE ROCKETEER with a Black Female Lead

$

The Rocketeer is one of my all-time favorite movies, so I've been bracing for this news for a long time: Disney is officially developing a sequel/reboot called The Rocketeers. But here's the most surprising part: it will be headlined by a black female character.

THR has the news, and a synopsis of what the story will be about:

The new take keeps the story in a period setting and offers a fresh view on the characters. Set six years after the original Rocketeer and after [Cliff] Secord has vanished while fighting the Nazis, an unlikely new hero emerges: a young African–American female pilot, who takes up the mantle of Rocketeer in an attempt to stop an ambitious and corrupt rocket scientist from stealing jet-pack technology in what could prove to be a turning point in the Cold War.

There are obvious shades of The Force Awakens in there with Secord going missing and a young woman rising up as the new protagonist, but since Rey turned out to be a great character, it seems like that's a pretty good model to use as a way to continue this story.

The original Rocketeer followed a pilot named Cliff Secord (Billy Campbell) who discovers a jet pack and takes to the skies to defeat a Nazi spy, all set against the backdrop of glamorous Hollywood in the late 1930s. It's a truly wonderful movie, and if you haven't seen it, quit your job, bail on your summer school classes, do whatever you have to do to carve out time to watch it as soon as possible. I covered the 20th anniversary screening event Disney held for the movie a few years ago, and it was one of the best theatrical experiences I've ever had.

Max Winkler and Matt Spicer are writing this new movie, which will presumably have Campbell coming back to reprise his role. (Maybe Jennifer Connelly and Alan Arkin will come back, too?) Brigham Taylor, who produced The Jungle Book with Jon Favreau, is producing alongside — get this — Blake Griffin from the Los Angeles Clippers and Ryan Kalil of the Carolina Panthers. They must have been big fans of the movie growing up. No word yet on who will direct, but I have to assume Joe Johnston has at least been contacted or is in contention if he wants the job, since he directed the original. We'll definitely keep you up to date with more information as soon as it arrives.

What do you think about this idea?

AEON FLUX, BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD, and More Headed to MTV Classic

$

0

Before they pushed out nonstop shows about teen pregnancy, wild party stories, and people watching videos, MTV had decent programming. Maybe that's just my bias of being older, but I like to think it's objectively true as well! Now, with MTV Classic, we have a chance of seeing if that's really true.

THR reports that MTV Classic will be replacing VH1 Classic on your cable boxes and be packed with old school MTV programming. This list includes shows like:

  • Aeon Flux
  • Beavis And Butthead
  • Daria
  • Wondershowzen
  • Cribs
  • Pimp My Ride
  • Punk'd
  • Jackass

Supposedly more will be added. In addition to all that programming, we'll also be subjected to classic re-runs of The Real World and MTV Unplugged on Saturdays.

That's all well and good, but I didn't see anything about the short-lived Spider-Man series! I loved that show growing up and haven't seen it in ages!

The change happens August 1st!

BEETLEJUICE 2: "It's Possible That Ship Has Sailed," Says Michael Keaton

$

Did your heart sink a little bit? Mine too.

Sources reported that Tim Burton was returning to direct Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton in Beetlejuice 2 a couple of years ago, with Burton saying in an interview that a script was in the works, and it was "closer than ever" around a year ago. The talk about the movie has gone back and forth since then, and while being interviewed about his upcoming film American Assassin, Keaton was asked if he knew anything about the rumored Beetlejuice sequel.

“No. Zero. You always hear things, that this is happening, and people seem to know more about it than I do.”

He goes on to say that he loves the character, but:

“It’s possible that ship has sailed. The only way to do it is to do it right, so much of it was improvised and so much was beautifully handmade by the artist that is Tim Burton. If you can’t get close to that, you leave it alone.”

It makes sense that they don't want to tarnish the original if the sequel isn't up to par, and in some ways that's refreshing. Keaton finished by speaking about remakes and sequels of other classic films, saying:

“There are certain movies that are like Indian burial grounds. You never ride over them. Bad s— happens if you cross that. You don’t touch certain things. They are sacred.”

You could argue that with Burton, Keaton, and Ryder in place for a sequel, we could be in for something special like the original, but if it's not as magical and memorable as the first, is it truly worth it? It's certainly discouraging that we may not re-visit Burton's wonderful world and characters, but hopefully, he can figure something out in that beautiful, dark, and crazy mind of his. Hope is not yet lost!
