New BLACK MIRROR Episodes Are Coming to Netflix in October; Here's What They'll Be About

$

0

After hearing people hype it for years, I finally binged the entirety of Charlie Brooker's twisted television series Black Mirror earlier this year. It's a gorgeous piece of work, full of insightful, deep, probing questions about the nature of humanity and our relationship with technology, and it has some of the best acting, writing, and directing I've seen on TV in a long time. The show was picked up by Netflix for a new season of twelve episodes, and now we've learned a lot more about what to expect, thanks to a panel at the Television Critics Association press tour.

Vulture brings the news that season 3 will actually be split in half, with six episodes hitting the streaming service this October, and the other six arriving sometime next year. Also, for those who thought the earlier episodes of the show were a bit too depressing, the people behind the project — creator Charlie Brooker and executive producer Annabel Jones — say there will be a "variety of tone" this time, and it won't be a "bleakfest." Jones said, “I think within this series of six, there are a few stories that are maybe much more playful. Challenging, but playful or sarcastic.” I largely liked what the series has done thus far, but I have to admit that sounds like a welcome change of tone to me.

The stories include: a police procedural, a romance, a thriller, a “horror romp,” and a military tale. “They're not retribution pieces,” Jones added. “I think we're trying to dramatize very contemporary concerns. In our current climate, and with the technological advancement in the last few decades, we're in a sort of place that feels very new and alien, and we're evolving as a species, and we don't quite know how or what the ramifications are yet. So a lot of the stories have that at their heart, a general unease that we haven't yet explored or come to terms with.”

We already knew some of the big names that were associated with the new season, including 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg, but now we have a list of episode titles and some more details about what we'll see:

“San Junipero” stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Mackenzie Davis in an '80s-centered episode directed by Owen Harris. Wyatt Russell and Hannah John-Kamen star in “Playtest,” an episode directed by Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane). “Nosedive” features Bryce Dallas Howard, Alice Eve, and James Norton in an episode about social anxiety directed by Joe Wright (Pride & Prejudice, Atonement). Rashida Jones and Mike Schur (Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) co-authored "Nosedive" because they were big fans of the show. Brooker called the episode “a social attire about identity in the social-media age. It's kind of like a cheerful pastel nightmare, that story.” He added that “technology is never the villain in this show. It's always about human failings and human messes, basically, that technology has helped facilitate."

I can't wait to dig into these new episodes. For more, read the full piece at Vulture.

Here's a Piece of SUICIDE SQUAD Marketing That Doesn't Give Away a Single Frame of The Movie

I'm really looking forward to seeing Suicide Squad, but I must admit that after watching this year's Comic-Con trailer, I feel like I've already seen the whole movie. I know, I know — that's on me, and I probably just shouldn't have watched it this close to the film's release (we're only a little more than a week away at this point). But Warner Bros. has been doing some serious work making sure that EVERYONE knows this movie is coming, and to do that, you typically need to give some things away in order to attract audiences to come check it out.

But here's one piece of marketing that doesn't give away a single frame of the movie. It's a new IMAX countdown — you know, the introductory video that plays in IMAX theaters before the movie starts? — that's Suicide Squad-themed, complete with jail cells, explosions, and all kinds of cool nods to the film. I'm a fan, and I think more studios should do this for their films. What do you think?

LIGHTS OUT Sequel Already in Development

After one week at the box office, a sequel has been green-lit and is moving forward for Lights Out. Deadline says the film has already grossed $35 million worldwide in its opening weekend on only a $4.8 million budget.

Director David. F Sandberg, who originally made the film as a short featuring his wife, is currently directing Annabelle 2, so it's too early to tell at the moment if he is being eyed to direct the sequel.

Sandberg also reports that one of his other horror shorts is in talks for a feature film by New Line. Sandberg is, of course, surprised and excited by his sudden success:

"This has been such a crazy trip, we are still trying to process it all,” he said. “It was only a year and a half [ago] when New Line called us in Sweden and said, this is happening, be here next week. When people ask for advice, I tell them this all happened because we decided to make a short in our little apartment. Just keep following your passion and making things and putting them out there, because you just never know who will be watching and what might happen.”

Amateur filmmakers, this is the guy you look to if you're looking for a success story! It's really cool that in just one year's time, a random short film changed his life!

Barry Allen is Wearing a WATCHMEN T-Shirt in The JUSTICE LEAGUE Trailer

We're almost a week removed from its reveal, and people are still uncovering easter eggs and references from the Justice League Comic-Con trailer. After it was spotted that he was watching Rick and Morty on one of his televisions, we see that Barry Allen is once again the host of yet another reference to the outside world. This time, it's related to the classic DC comic series Watchmen:

See that shirt? It's actually a T-shirt featuring Watchmen cover art from a story-within-the-story called Tales of the Black Freighter:

Pretty neat, right? I'm still a little leery of this film post-Batman v Superman, but this trailer is giving me hope that this movie will bring great things to the DC universe. Thanks to Redditor Draynior for the heads up!

DAREDEVIL and JESSICA JONES Won't Get New Episodes Until 2018

With Luke Cage premiering in late September, and Iron Fist and The Defenders slated for 2017, someone had to take a hit. Entertainment Weekly reports that while we will be getting a TON of new Marvel stuff on Netflix in the coming year, there will be no new Jessica Jones or Daredevil episodes until 2018.

Both characters, of course, will be featured in The Defenders, which will likely lead into their storylines into their respective seasons.

So where exactly does this say Jessica Jones and Daredevil will appear in 2018? It doesn't, but Netflix announced long ago that they were limiting Marvel to two seasons a year for their shows. With Iron Fist and The Defenders for sure happening in 2017...well, you get the picture.

I'm not too sure how I feel about this. While I am glad that Marvel is giving an equal respect to all of their new series, it sucks that a show with a freshman success like Jessica Jones will have to wait two years before we get a follow up to a great season.

Part of me wonders if, eventually, Marvel will have to loosen the reigns and allow for some shows to shoot simultaneously and trust more people to take control of their Netflix franchises. While I do want more episodes of everything Marvel, I suppose I should be thankful that they are going with the "Quality over Quantity" approach when it comes to their franchises.

Is it coincidence or did Jurassic World lift plot points from this toy commercial from 1998 for their script? More than likely, it's the fact that there aren't many places you can take a film about dinosaurs in a modern era aside from genetic mutation. Will the T-Rex save the day?! We can only hope!

Parody Trailer Imagines What Quentin Tarantino's SUICIDE SQUAD Would Be Like

David Ayer's Suicide Squad has a style all its own, but what if Quentin Tarantino directed a similar kind of movie featuring characters of his own creation? That's what the team at Loot Crate imagined in this parody trailer, which features a bunch of pretty solid impressions of QT characters, including a really good one of the writer/director himself. Check it out and let us know what you think.

First Look at Your New Superman in The CW's SUPERGIRL

Here's the first official look at Tyler Hoechlin as Superman alongside Melissa Benoist's Supergirl for the upcoming season of The CW's Supergirl. There are tons of little differences in the costume that I'm sure true die hard Superman fans are going to want to talk about, so feel free to use the comments section as the place to do that.

My take? I loved Hoechlin in Everybody Wants Some!!, and I'm sure he's a nice guy in real life, but this picture makes him look like the douchiest Superman we've ever seen. Maybe it's just this specific picture and he'll be fine in motion. What do you think?

The second season of Supergirl premieres on The CW on October 10th.

The BOURNE Trilogy Gets an Honest Trailer

Matt Damon returns to the role that made him an international action star in Jason Bourne, which hits theaters tonight. So naturally, the team at ScreenJunkies thought now was a good time to look back on his Bourne trilogy (forget about Jeremy Renner's Legacy) and give it the Honest Trailer treatment. You can read my review of the new movie here, but the same basic stuff goes down in this movie as in every one of the old ones:

This year's Olympic Games begin next week in Rio de Janeiro, and Darth Blender has put together a fantastic movie supercut that features tons of movie characters "competing" in various Olympic sports. Example: it's probably pretty rare to find a scene in a movie in which a character actually launching a discus, so Darth used footage of Captain America hurling his shield instead (close enough!). It's a super creative and extremely well-edited video, and I think you'll dig it.

Beautiful and Vibrant Trailer for Léa Seydoux’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST Adaptation

Disney’s live-action version of Beauty and the Beast isn’t the only one that has been in development. Director Christophe Gans (Silent Hill, The Brotherhood of the Wolf) seems to have made a beautiful version of the story, and I was quite impressed by what I saw in the trailer that was released.

The the French film stars Vincent Cassel (Black Swan) as The Beast and Léa Seydoux (Spectre) as Belle. You all know the story the film is based on, and it’s explained that this is a “modern take” on the classic fairytale. According to the synopsis it was filmed using state-of-the-art technology.

The movie is set to open in theaters on September 23rd, and if you’re a fan of this story, it looks like a movie experience that you won’t want to miss out on. This is sure to be a visually sweeping cinematic adventure.

The Untold True Story of THE KARATE KID - Parody Short Film

I’ve got an incredibly amusing video for you to watch inspired by classic film The Karate Kid. This is a parody short that tells us the true story of Daniel Larusso that inspired the film. The video was sent to us, and it came with the following note:

In 1983, a senior at West valley high filmed his final school year. What he captured would inspire one of the greatest movies of the 1980's. This is the true story of the real....Karate Kid.

The video was created by Joseph Vincent and he goes on to explain how he pulled it off:

“I took all the behind the scenes footage I could, the rehearsal videos, and cut them together to tell a new story that I wrote about Johnny. I brought in some of my friends to do Voice Over for me (big thanks to them) and edited it all together to create this mockumentary. I hope you enjoy it.”

The project turned out awesome, and if you’re a fan of this movie, you’re going to love this.

New Details on Baby Groot’s Memory and Personality in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2

As you all know, at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy, Groot sacrificed himself to save his friends. Thankfully, he didn’t die. Instead, he started to regrow. When we pick up with him in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 he’s a little baby Groot, and he's insanely adorable. He also still knows how to kick ass, though, just in a different way.

About a week ago an official piece of concept art was released giving us our first look at Groot on the shoulder of Drax. In a previous interview with executive producer Jonathan Schwartz he offered some insight on Groot saying:

“He doesn’t have the wisdom and experience of that Groot. He’s a younger Groot and a more rambunctious Groot. The question is, is he the same Groot, just smaller? Or is he a different Groot that’s sprung up from the seed of the first Groot?”

This got fans wondering if Groot will even remember any of the events from the first movie or even prior to that. Thanks to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, we now have an answer. During an interview with Collider, he explains that Groot is still Groot:

"He remembers. He’s not mentally a baby, he is still Groot… I sort of equate it to Spock circa the end of Search for Spock and The Voyage Home."

Good. That first comment from Schwartz seemed a little off, so I’m glad that Feige came in to clear it up. He went on to talk about the relationship between Rocket and Groot, saying:

"When it comes to a Guardians of the Galaxy film, a James Gunn script, it’s not just about the funny, it’s not just about the action, it’s about the heart. And the amount of heart that you get out of this trash panda raccoon and now this little twig baby Groot is actually awe-inspiring. It is amazing what he’s done with those two."

I love the relationship between these two characters, and it will be fun to see that relationship continue in the sequel. We got a little tease of it in some footage that James Gunn screened at Comic-Con, and fans are going to love what Gunn has done with this sequel and these characters.

Must Watch SUICIDE SQUAD Video Takes You Behind-the-Scenes and Features New Footage

We’re only a week away from Suicide Squad being released in theaters, and I couldn’t be more excited! The movie looks like it is going to be an absolute blast, and I’m ready to see these villains kick some ass!

Warner Bros. has released a new featurette for the film that gives fans a cool behind-the-scenes look and also offers up even more rocking footage from the film. On top of that, the cast and crew of the film talk about what it was like working on it, bonding with each other, and working with director David Ayer, who has a few things of his own to say about the film in the video.

In case you missed them, you can watch the Comic-Con trailer here as well as nine clips from Suicide Squad here. The movie opens in theaters on August 5th.

It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super-Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?

Another JUSTICE LEAGUE Hero Set to Appear in SUICIDE SQUAD

Only a week away, and the hype for Suicide Squad just keeps building. Before you go any further, the following information can be deemed as a “spoiler,” so hit that back button now or forever hold your peace.

Warner Bros. has put out a press release detailing the cast and crew that worked on the film. Thanks to the information released, we find out that Batman will not be the only Justice League member to appear. Ezra Miller, playing The Flash, will be joining The Dark Knight in the film. The information does not say in what capacity he will be in the film, but I believe it will be more than a post credit scene. I am very interested to see the role, if any, he will play in the story.

I'm very excited to see the movie. The cast looks great and the movie seems like an all-around good time. Do you think we will see any other Justice League members in the film? Suicide Squad is set to hit the big screens on August 5th.

Editor's Note:

The cast list, which you can see below, lists the characters in oder of appearance and according to that he will appear in the film after Captain Boomerang and before Diablo, Killer Croc, and Enchantress.

Chris Evans in Talks to Star in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Movie for Lionsgate

Captain America star Chris Evans is currently in talks to join Lionsgate's Jekyll, which will be based on Steven Moffat's 2007 BBC series. The series continued the events of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. If cast, Evans will take on the lead role of Tom JackmanIf you aren't familiar with the series, it was officially described as follows:

It’s 2007 and there’s a new Dr Jekyll, with an old problem: Mr Hyde. But they have a deal – a body share – and an impossible life is somehow lived.
What Hyde doesn’t know, however, is that Jackman is married, and there’s a wife and two children he’ll do anything to protect from his dark side. With all the resources of modern technology, and the best surveillance hardware, he’s determined to keep his dark side in line.
He’s done a deal with his own devil. But neither of them know that an ancient organisation with limitless wealth and power is monitoring their every move, and a plan over a century in the making is coming to fruition. The return of Dr Jekyll is no accident…

The film is being produced by Ellen DeGeneres and Jeff Kleeman through their A Very Good Production banner. They've hired Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry to write the script based on Moffat's six-episode miniseries. That writing team has recently worked with director Shane Black on The Nice Guys and Doc Savage, as well as the remake of Death Note.

Evans is next set to appear in the Marc Webb-directed film Gifted, and then he'll jump back into the Marvel universe with Avengers: Infinity War - Part 1.  I enjoy Evans' work, and it's always nice to see him take on a project outside of Marvel. It'd be cool to see him take on this Jekyll gig.

James Gunn Explains Why He Chose to Use Ego as Star-Lord’s Dad and Why It's Not a Spoiler

$

Ever since Guardians of the Galaxy was released, fans have been wondering and speculating on who Star-Lord’s father would be. It’s been a long roadm but our patience paid off when director James Gunn revealed at Comic-Con that Ego the Living Planet is Peter Quill’s dad in the MCU.

This was a shocking reveal, and I saw a lot of confusion among fans. It was easy for me to accept because Gunn knows what he’s doing with these films and these characters. During an interview with io9, Gunn talked about why he chose Ego to be Quill’s dad and also about why he decided to make the big reveal at Comic-Con instead of holding off on it as a surprise for the movie.

First, Gunn explains his reasons as to why he opted to bring Ego into the mix and not follow what the comics had laid out:

“I didn’t like that in the comics J’Son is a king, and he also reeked very much of Star Wars, so I didn’t want that same sort of thing. I like the idea of Quill’s father being an ancient, cosmic, incredibly powerful being who, just like Rocket, has problems connecting to other people because [...] there’s nothing else like him. This character has a hard time connecting to other people because he’s a god who’s been alone for billions of years.”

He makes some great points there, and I understand a little more as to why he went with Ego. I initially thought it was just a cool completely unexpected choice, and I believe that Gunn is the only person that could get away with it. We got a brief look at Kurt Russell as Ego at Comic-Con, and you’ll get yours later on this year when the first trailer is released this fall. That's the costume he wears in the film above.

He went on to talk about why revealing who the character is so early isn't a spoiler, saying:

“It was going to come out sooner or later, And I think one of the things I impressed upon people early on is the identity of Quill’s father is not the big stunner in this movie. I’m not leading it all to Darth Vader being Luke’s father in the third act reveal. This is really about the relationship between [Star-Lord] and his father, who happens to be a living planet, and his other father, Yondu, who is an abusive jerk. It’s about the dysfunctional family triad that those three characters have. That’s the center of the movie.”

He expanded on that a bit in a recent Facebook post, which you can read below:

WHY THE IDENTITY OF STAR-LORD'S FATHER ISN'T A SPOILER.
Don't read any further if you don't want to know who he is.
Also you might want to stay off the internet until May and definitely unfollow me and don't watch our trailers or other ads...
Anyway, people have been particularly excited, confused, and supportive of keeping Marvel Cosmic truly cosmic with the reveal of Peter Quill's father's identity. However, there have been a minority of folks who have questioned, and even been angry, that I and Marvel would reveal something so major months before the film comes out.
I get it. If we lived in a perfect world, I wouldn't tell you ANYTHING before you walked in to see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. I wouldn't tell you Groot was now Baby Groot, I wouldn't tell you Mantis was in the movie, I wouldn't say that Ayesha and Taserface are our antagonists, that Yondu and Nebula have incredibly important roles in the film, nor would I tell you that Quill's father is Ego the Living Planet.
However, the world is imperfect.
Firstly, we have to advertise our film. And it will be impossible to show you very much of Vol. 2 since Ego is very much a part of all of it. We just don't have a way around it.
Secondly, there are journalists online who love giving you scoops about characters and plot twists in upcoming films. Ego is such a big part of the movie, this was going to come out soon, as much as we've tried to hide it (when our online press day happened on set, Kurt Russell sat in a chair that read "J'son," and all of our script pages and artwork featuring him used the same name). Frankly, I would rather be in control of the announcement myself than have it come out on SpoilersRUs.com in a few weeks.
That said, knowing who Quill's father is will not diminish your enjoyment of the film in any way. The story is not built to be a shocking twist in the same way Luke's father was Darth, Soylent Green was people, Rosebud was a sled, or that that pretty woman from Crying Game had a penis (I guess I should have said spoilers before all that). Ego the emotional center of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 from the beginning to the end, and is not a twist.
And believe me - there are many, many more surprises we still have in store for you from Vol. 2 - hopefully the biggest of which is how much you'll love the movie itself. Because, to me, that's the only twist that matters.
james

Hopefully, that puts some people at ease because a handful of fans were pissed off that Gunn let the cat out of the bag so early. Like he said, it's not going to ruin our enjoyment of the film and there are a lot more surprises to come! What do you all think about what Gunn says here?

Trailer for Ron Howard’s Documentary THE BEATLES: EIGHT DAYS A WEEK

"There's no switching off… You're on 24 hours a day."

If you’re a fan of The Beatles there’s a new documentary coming out from director Ron Howard called The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years. The doc includes some rare never-before-seen footage of the iconic band as they toured the world to play their music. It covers the years from 1962 to 1966, which were some of the craziest years for the band as they rose to stardom. It also features interviews with those who lived through it. It's really cool to see some of this footage of The Beatles that we’ve never seen before. I’m looking forward to learning more new things about these legendary musicians thanks to this doc.

The Touring Years is based on the first part of The Beatles’ career (1962-1966) – the period in which they toured and captured the world’s acclaim. Ron Howard’s film will explore how John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr came together to become this extraordinary phenomenon, “The Beatles.”  It will explore their inner workings – how they made decisions, created their music and built their collective career together – all the while, exploring The Beatles’ extraordinary and unique musical gifts and their remarkable, complementary personalities. The film will focus on the time period from the early Beatles’ journey in the days of The Cavern Club in Liverpool to their last concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco in 1966.
The Beatles played Shea Stadium on August 15th 1965 in what was to be the first rock concert ever staged in a stadium in front of more than 55,000 people. The event was filmed by 14, 35mm cameras by Ed Sullivan Productions and Brian Epstein and for the very first time, the fully restored, remastered, 30-minute performance will be screened as part of the worldwide theatrical release of Academy Award®-winner Ron Howard’s authorized documentary feature film, The Beatles: Eight Days A Week - The Touring Years.

The movie will be released on September 16th in theaters and on Hulu.
