Elegant Lightsaber Tools For a More Civilized Age

elegant-lightsaber-tools-for-a-more-civilized-age

I’m not a tool a guy. I don’t build things, I don’t fix things, I just write about movies and other geeky things. Even as cool as this Star Wars inspired Lightsaber tool kit is, I would rarely use them. I guess whenever I buy IKEA furniture I could put them to good use, but even then, IKEA provides you with the most of the tools you need to build their damn furniture anyway.

Lightsabers are beautiful weapons. They have the classic appeal of sword mixed with the futuristic joy of lasers. Lightsabers hold a special place in our hearts.

And now also in our toolboxes. With the Star Wars Lightsaber Tool Kit, you get a set of 3 screwdrivers. Now you can approach those repairs with confidence, because you'll have a lightsaber by your side. Choose your weapon: Vader's flathead, Luke's Phillips, or Yoda's shorter flathead. Judge it by its size, do you? Hmm? Well, actually yes. It's good for getting into smaller places where its evil, larger companion won't fit.

The Star Wars Lightsaber Tool Kit comes from ThinkGeek and you can purchase a set of your own for $19.99.

J.J. Abrams Set to Produce Michael Jackson Event Series

J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot Productions have jumped on board to help develop the Michael Jackson event series based on Tavis Smiley’s upcoming book Before You Judge Me: The Triumph And Tragedy Of Michael Jackson’s Last Days. The project is set up at Warner Bros. TV, and the book is described as follows:

A powerful chronicle of the sixteen weeks leading up to King of Pop Michael Jackson's death.
Michael Jackson's final months were like the rest of his short and legendary life: filled with deep lows and soaring highs, a constant hunt for privacy, and the pressure and fame that made him socially fragile and almost--ultimately--unable to live.
With the insight and compassion that he brought to his bestselling telling of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s final year, Tavis Smiley provides a glimpse into the superstar's life in this emotional, honest, yet celebratory book. Readers will witness Jackson's campaign to recharge his career--hiring and firing managers and advisors, turning to and away from family members, fighting depression and drug dependency--while his one goal remained: to mount the most spectacular series of shows the world had ever seen. BEFORE YOU JUDGE ME is a humanizing look at Jackson's last days.

As a huge fan of Michael Jackson and the music he created, this is a project that heavily interests me. It’s awesome to see that Abrams is going to be a part of the project as pretty much anything he’s involved with turns out to be good.

Taylor Lautner Joins The Cast of Fox’s SCREAM QUEENS

$

Remember when Taylor Lautner was the hottest thing Hollywood had seen and he was being groomed to be the next huge movie star? Well, that didn’t quite work out as planned, did it? After starring in a few films that completely bombed, he has now made his way to Ryan Murphy’s Fox TV series Scream Queens and you know what? It’s a perfect project for him.

He will be in Season 2, which is set in “a hospital where some of the most fascinating and bizarre medical cases are under observation.” Lautner will take on a lead role in the series opposite John Stamos. Lautner will play a doctor at the hospital named Cassidy Cascade, “who suffers from a strange medical condition and becomes a suspect when a series of tragic events plagues the institution.”

Jamie Lee Curtis, Emma Roberts, Lea Michele, Abigail Breslin, Keke Palmer, Glen Powell, and Niecy Nash are set to reprise their characters in the upcoming season, and Stamos will play Dr. Brock Holt, “the hospital’s brilliant but secretive head surgeon.”

This will be Lautner's first real TV series regular gig in the U.S. He recently co-stared in the BBC comedy Cuckoo.

Radical Custom-Made HE-MAN-Style STAR WARS Action Figures

radical-custom-made-he-man-style-star-wars-action-figures1

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe just received a gloriously radical action figure Star Wars mashup. These action figures were created by Sillof, who is a master at creating custom-made figures. We’ve posted a few of his collections in the past, but his latest series is geeky perfection. There’s a set of heroes and villains and they all have an extremely cool look. The Star Wars characters have never looked so muscular and badass.

The artist says:

Most boys who grew up in the 80’s had certain staple toy lines they played with, among them were Star Wars and He-Man. What they may have not understand was how much the latter owed the the former.   As a kid we just enjoyed these diverse worlds populated with great characters. Most kids, myself included, did not realize at that time that the Masters of the Universe was essentially a mash up of Conan the Barbarian and Star Wars with some of the style of Frank Frazetta and elements of Flash Gordon (of course Star Wars already owed much to that universe as seen here.) This line is intended as a commentary on the similarities of both toy universes. This in not a mash up or intended be “Look at this character dressed as that character”. Rather, it imagines a world in which the similarities are extended to place the Star Wars archetypes inside the Masters of the Universe world. As a further challenged I tried to use parts exclusive to the MOTUC figures with little additional sculpting or parts from other lines. This was the line I was working on and building in the Lucasfilm approved documentary I was featured in entitled “In a Galaxy” (more about that here.)  So without further ado...

Warner Bros. Reportedly Wants Justin Lin to Direct AKIRA

Warner Bros. has been developing a live-action version of Akira for years. Since 2002 several directors have been attached to the project including Stephen Norrington, Gary Whitta, Albert Hughes, Ruairi Robinson, and Jaume Collet-Serra. Now it sounds like there’s a new name we’ll be adding to that list.

According to The Wrap’s Jeff Sneider on an appearance on Meet the Movie Press podcast, the studio is courting director Justin Lin to take on the challenge of bringing Akira to life. Lin is the director behind Star Trek Beyond and three films in The Fast and the Furious franchise.

There’s no other information than that, but I think Lin is a solid choice to direct this film. With films like Fast and Furious and Star Trek under his belt, Lin is primed and ready to tackle a project like Akira.

I hope this news is true, and if it is, I hope Lin will give Akira the incredible live-action film adaptation that it deserves. To catch up on all of our Akira movie and fandom news, click here.

Japan has a new Godzilla movie coming out called Godzilla: Resurgence, and it features a nightmarishly awesome new design for the giant creature. It is unlike any Godzilla design we've ever seen before, and I absolutely love it!

If you're a fan of the new creature design as well, you'll be happy to hear that Tamashii Nations has an action figure of the new Godzilla, and it's freakin' awesome! They call it the S.H. Monsterarts Godzilla Resurgence – Shin Godzilla Figure, and here are the details from Toy Ark:

The Shin Godzilla figure measures about 40CM (15.75 inches) from head-to-tail and will stand at 18CM (7″) tall. It features the full range of articulation that fans have come to expect from the S.H. Monsterarts line. It is due for release this November. It will be priced at 12,960 Yen (about $126 USD). No word on the official pre-order dates at this time.

If you missed the trailer for the upcoming film, you might want to check it out here. It looks pretty damn cool. The movie will be released on July 29th, 2016.

Fox Is Reportedly Considering a Marvel Studios Team-Up

$

After Deadpool was released, it was mentioned by the filmmakers that they would like to see Deadpool and Spider-Man team up in a movie. That sparked a lot of discussion about Fox and Marvel making a deal to team up and make movies together like Sony and Marvel are in the process of doing. Last week, we learned that the relationship between the two studios has blossomed quite well, and they seem to be enjoying each other’s company. They might even start building a Spider-Man cinematic universe together!

Even though Deadpool was an explosion of glory for the studio, X-Men: Apocalypse proved to be a disappointment both critically and commercially. Fox has had a few bad eggs with their X-Men franchise, and even though they have a lineup of mutant-centric movies they are working on, like New Mutants, Wolverine 3, and Gambit, it sounds like somewhere down they line they might want to work with Marvel on a creative level.

During a recent episode of Collider Heroes, Matt Key, a producer on Kevin Smith's Fatman on Batman podcast, said he has heard some interesting rumblings:

"I've heard from a few of my sources, my little birds that Fox and Marvel have... kind of talked, but not really, but like there's interest from Fox, like, 'Ooh, y'know, what they did with Sony and Spider-Man is actually pretty cool, like, maybe...' We're years away from that ever possibly happening... but I think that's what it would take... Fox joining hands with Marvel..."

That’s pretty damn vague, and who knows if there’s any truth to it. One thing we know for sure from previous reports is that some of the directors, producers, and writers developing these comic book films for Fox would love to work with Marvel, and some of them have said they are pushing for it.

Fox and Marvel have already teamed up to help develop the TV series Hellfire and Legion, so maybe that opens doors for a movie team-up. If the two studies do end up coming together and working on some crossover projects, it’s probably not going to happen for awhile. Hopefully, it does happen, though, because it would be pretty cool to see the MCU expanded even more with some of our favorite mutant characters.

First Look at the New TRANSFORMERS Series for Adults — COMBINER WARS

Last year it was announced that Hasbro was developing a new Transformers animated web series with Machinima called Transformers: Combiner Wars. The new series is being targeted to adult fans who grew up with the original series in the '80s. The show revolves around Transformers who can join and combine to transform into larger robots like Devastator and Superion. Today we have our first look at some of the characters that will be in the series, like Starscream, pictured above!

It was previously reported that the series would introduce "new lore and all-new characters that, combined with the characters fans have known for decades, will bring the Transformers storytelling in a new direction as the Machinima series will deliver raging action and signature humor to legions of Transformers fans."

So far, I'm really digging the look of the new series. Hopefully, it delivers something completely badass for the fans. You'll find images of other characters from the series such as an original character named Maxima and a female Combiner-hunter named Windblade. I can't wait to see these characters in action!

The show will be released in August on go90. Before that, though, there will be a four-episode prelude series on June 28th across go90, YouTube and Facebook.

DRIVE Director Nicolas Winding Refn Wants to Make a BATGIRL Film

$

Nicolas Winding Refn, the director behind films such as Bronson, Drive, and Only God Forgives, would love to make a comic book movie. If you’ve seen any of the director’s films, you know he has a hypnotic visual style, and his stories can be very dark and moody. I’ve liked a couple of his films, and it would definitely be interesting to see his take on a superhero film.

The filmmaker recently did an interview with Business Insider and said he would have liked to take on Wonder Woman, but since the character was already taken, he reveals Batgirl would be a cool opportunity for him. When asked about taking on a superhero film he said:

"God, I would love to make one, it would probably be great fun. I just don't know when it's going to happen. I very much enjoy my freedom creatively, but I also would love to make one of those big Hollywood films that costs a lot of money and has a lot of people running around with cell phones and all that insanity. What ones are left? You know the one I want to do? I want to make Batgirl. Let's get Warner working on it."

A Batgirl movie directed by Refn? That'd be interesting. There’s no doubt he'd do some very different and unique with the character, and that’s probably why Warner Bros. will never ask him to do it. His most recent film was The Neon Demon, which was such a damn strange film. I'm still not sure if I liked it or not. It completely bombed at the box office this weekend with only about $600,000, though, so doing a commercial film like Batgirl probably wouldn't be a bad thing for the director's career at this point.

There have been several different versions of Batgirl over the years, the most popular being Barbara Gordon. Other versions of the character include Betty Kane, Helena Bertinelli, Cassandra Cain, and Stephanie Brown. I imagine if we ever do see Batgirl get her own film it would center around Barbara Gordon.

It’s been rumored that Batgirl could be introduced in the Harley Quinn Suicide Squad spin-off film that's in development. Maybe the studio should consider hiring Refn to direct that movie! What do you think about this filmmaker taking on a superhero film like Batgirl?

New Trailer for STAR TREK BEYOND Featuring Rihanna's New Song "Sledgehammer"

Paramount Pictures has released another great trailer for director Justin Lin's Star Trek Beyond. The trailer features new footage from the film and it also debuts the new single from Rihanna, "Sledgehammer," which will be included on the film's soundtrack.

This next chapter in the Star Trek franchise continues to follow the epic voyage of the U.S.S. Enterprise and her intrepid crew as they are deep into their mission of exploring new worlds and new civilizations. "In Beyond, the Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a mysterious new enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test."

I really like what I'm seeing of Beyond, and with Lin being a real true fan of the franchise, unlike Abrams, I think there's a chance that this will end up being the best film in this latest franchise reboot. I'm excited to see how this next story plays and where the adventure leads our favorite characters and how it effects them.

Star Trek Beyond stars Idris Elba, Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, and Karl Urban. It's set to be released on July 22nd.

Last Night's GAME OF THRONES Season Finale Confirmed The Biggest ASOIAF Fan Theory of Them All

$

0

This article contains spoilers for Season 6 of HBO's Game of Thrones. If you haven't caught up, turn back now.

Since the very beginning of the series, George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels and HBO's mega-successful TV adaptation Game of Thrones has teased the mystery of Jon Snow's true parentage. When showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss initially met with Martin about adapting the show, the biggest reason Martin gave them his blessing was because he asked them who Jon's real mother was and they answered correctly. Listen to them tell the story themselves, starting around the 27:10 mark below.

Book readers have been left hanging on issue this for twenty years, and as you can imagine for a property that has such fervent fans, some theories popped up about it. One particular theory has been around far longer than the godawful "Sansa is pregnant with Ramsay's rape child" theory, or the one about Jon Snow being resurrected with the mind of a wolf, or any other ridiculous one you may have heard about this season as large portions of the story continued passed the established events in Martin's novels.

The biggest, most well-known fan theory about the books and the show is known by the spoiler-friendly name "R+L=J," which stands for "Rhaegar plus Lyanna equals Jon," and that theory was finally confirmed in last night's season six finale, "The Winds of Winter." If you're looking at those names and scratching your head, let me break it down for you.

Rhaegar Targaryen was Dany's older brother. He was married to Elia Martell, but was in love with Ned Stark's sister Lyanna, who was betrothed to Robert Baratheon. Rhaegar and Lyanna ran off together, which infuriated Robert and kickstarted an event known as Robert's Rebellion, a battle that ended with most of the Targaryens dead (including Rhaegar and the Mad King) and Robert on the Iron Throne. Remember how Ned and Robert disagreed about sending assassins to kill Dany early in the show? That's because Robert knew his claim to the throne was suspect (he usurped it) and didn't want her coming back to stake her claim one day (too bad, dude — she's on the way now!). The story that spread throughout the land was how Rhaegar kidnapped and raped Lyanna, but the two were actually lovers, and Lyanna birthed Jon in a place nicknamed the Tower of Joy (as we saw last night). She made Ned promise to raise him as his bastard "son" to keep Jon safe from Robert's wrath, because if he found out about Jon's true heritage, Robert would surely have him killed.

So Ned, being the honorable man he was, kept the promise he made to his dying sister all those years ago and never told anyone — not even his own wife, Catelyn, who despised Jon because she thought he was the product of Ned cheating on her with another woman.

So Jon Snow isn't a Snow at all — he's a Targaryen. He's Dany's nephew! A Song of Ice and Fire may be about Jon himself, the resurrected offspring of both Stark (Ice) and Fire (Targaryen). Mind blown, right? As Vanity Fair points out, the show has hinted multiple times at this reveal. You had to know what you were looking for, and you could put the pieces together.

That cut in last night's episode from Lyanna's brown-eyed baby to Jon's bearded face is as much confirmation as we need. R+L=J is one Game of Thrones fan theory that actually came true.

Will Michael Mando Be Playing Carnage in SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING?

$

Last week we learned that Better Call Saul actor Michael Mando had joined the cast of Spider-Man: Homecoming. There were no details on who he would be playing, but after he was cast the official Better Call Saul Twitter account posted something that heavily hinted that Mando could be playing Cletus Kasady, a ruthless homicidal maniac with absolutely no moral compass who eventually transforms into Carnage.

This is the tweet that they sent out:

Why would they use the word carnage in that phrasing!? "Bringing carnage to life?" It doesn’t confirm anything, but it sounds to me like they are teasing some information that they probably know. Of course, maybe they said it because they knew it would cause speculation to blow up among the fans. It definitely caught my eye when I saw it!

I doubt that they would bring Carnage into the new Spider-Man reboot so soon, but it's more likely that they would at least introduce Cletus Kasady in the first film setting him up for Carnage in future films. It would be awesome if this character was actually included in the film. I’d love to see Carnage finally make his big screen debut after all these years!

The cast features Tom Holland as Spider-Man/Peter Parker, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, and Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, and Michael Keaton as The Vulture. It also includes Zendaya, Donald Glover, Martin Starr, Laura Harrier, Kenneth Choi, Michael Barbieri, Logan Marshall-Green, Michael Mando, Selenis Leyva, Tony Revolori, Isabella Amara, Jorge Lendeborg, Jr., JJ Totah, Hannibal Buress, Abraham Attah, and Bokeem Woodbine.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is currently shooting, and it will be released in theaters on July 7th, 2017.

Kellan Lutz Is in Talks to Play He-Man in McG's MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE

It sounds like Sony Pictures is looking to move forward with McG's big screen adaptation of Masters of the Universe. The studio is currently meeting with actors to take on the role of He-Man, and one of those actors is Twilight and Hercules actor Kellan Lutz. He revealed the news himself with the following tweet over the weekend:

So this film is shaping up to be a disaster. Didn't anyone see his performance in Hercules?! Not only do they have a mediocre director helming the film, but now that director is looking at casting a mediocre actor to play one of the most iconic characters from the '80s. That's disheartening. I'm a huge fan of the He-Man franchise and want to see the character get the epic film he deserves. But the team of talent currently developing the film doesn't spark much confidence. I guess we can expect a mediocre Masters of the Universe movie.

Shortly after Lutz tweeted his little announcement some fan art surfaced in a reply that didn't help sell Lutz as He-Man in any way.

Back in 2008, I was really excited about the script that Justin Marks wrote for the film. It was called Greyskull and was described as The Lord of the Rings meets The Matrix, with a little Batman Begins, but that script has been scrapped.

Sony Pictures Is Reportedly Still Developing a Silver Sable Spider-Man Solo Film

sony-pictures-is-reportedly-still-developing-a-silver-sable-spider-man-solo-film

We know that Sony Pictures has been keen on playing with some of the female characters in the Spider-Man universe. Over a year ago there was a lot of talk regarding an all-female superhero film that would include the likes of characters such as Spider-Girl, Black Cat, Silver Sable, Silk, and Firestar.

Then last week we learned that Sony is wanting to work with Marvel on other Spider-Man projects. It seems like one of those projects could center on the character Silver Sable. When Sony got hacked and all the e-mails were released, Silver Sable was one of the movies that were mentioned as being in development.

According to Jeff Sneider, who writes for The Wrap, the project is still alive and well. He revealed the news on the Meet the Movie Press podcast, and he also revealed that screenwriter Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady, Suffragette) is reportedly in talks to join the project. There’s not much more information than that, but it will be interesting to see how they build on the new Spider-Man universe with Marvel at the creative helm.

Silver Sable is an interesting character and is in a way relatable to Suicide Squad as she is the leader of a group of reformed criminals who work as mercenaries. If Suicide Squad is a success, I imagine Sony would want to jump all over this Silver Sable movie and get it rolling.

Silver Sable is a born leader and highly trained in martial arts and weapons use. She uses her training to lead a group of reformed criminals to an honest life working as mercenaries in her Wild Pack. Silver’s occupation is CEO of Silver Sable International, which is based in Symkaria - a small country in the Balkans. In combat she has been known to use a katana and a chai (a weighted projectile of her own design). She often uses this latter weapon to disarm or disable her foes.

Regardless of which Spider-Man characters get their own films, it will be cool to see the MCU continue to grow with more characters.

Impressive Sci-Fi Short DÉDALO Tells an Intense Story of Survival Against Alien Creatures

I've got an awesome sci-fi short film for you to watch today called "DÉDALO." The story follows a woman named Siena who is trapped into a Space Freighter/Refinery called the DÉDALO and is forced to survive an infestation of diabolic alien creatures.

The short film was directed by Jerónimo Rocha, and what he created is really quite impressive. I loved the atmosphere, and the film was shot really well. The short has an Aliens type vibe to it. But what I really loved about it most was its awesomely heavy intensity. As soon as the movie started I was hooked, and it kept the intensity level rising up until the last shot of the short.

There's really nothing not to like about this film other than the fact that I wish it hadn't ended! I'd be curious to see a full-length feature film based on this concept. I also want to point out that I really liked the alien creature design. In case you're interested, I also included a "Making Of" video for you to check out. I really hope you enjoy this!

John Boyega Teases New Collaboration With ATTACK THE BLOCK Director Joe Cornish

$

Joe Cornish's British sci-fi film Attack The Block is one of my favorite movies of the past few years. It's the film largely responsible for John Boyega securing the role of Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but it's an awesome movie in its own right that you should really take the time to seek out if you haven't seen it. Fans of the movie have wondered about a possible sequel, and now Boyega is cryptically tweeting about meeting up with Cornish for a new project:

While many are hoping Boyega is teasing a possible Attack The Block sequel here, I'm not so sure. If that was the case, I feel like he would have included some reference to the original movie in there as a hint, one of its catch phrases like "allow it" or "believe." But anything is possible.

Boyega and Cornish talked about a sequel in 2011 after the first film came out, with Cornish explaining all of the cool idea Boyega had for the Moses character to continue the adventure:

"[He] keeps coming up with amazing ideas. He has this image of a bigger alien attack on London, as if the attack we saw in 'Attack the Block' was just the [first] wave and there's another wave of bigger creatures. And he described to me this image of Moses leading a whole army of hood kids across the Thames, next to the houses of Parliament."
"No, his image was even better," Cornish continued. "He had an image of Moses on a police horse. You know the police in London who have those horses they use in riots...somehow Moses has got onto one of those horses. So he's on a horse leading this army of South London kids across the river to take on this bigger wave of aliens. So yeah it's really fun to think of stuff like that and what we could do."

Cornish has been rumored for or attached to a number of potential blockbuster movies over the past few years, but at this point, Attack The Block remains the only film he's directed. Perhaps Boyega's newfound star power will be enough to generate enough traction for a studio to finance a sequel. What do you think? Would you like to see Attack The Block 2, or are you hoping the duo is collaborating on something completely fresh?

GAME OF THRONES: Best Moments From Season 6, Ep. 10 "The Winds of Winter"

Warning: spoilers ahead for season 6, episode 10 of Game of Thrones, entitled "The Winds of Winter." If you haven't seen the episode yet, turn back now.

This season, I wrote some quick thoughts about each episode the day after it aired. I didn't get too deep into full-on recaps (you can find those all over the internet, and you've probably already read a few today if you're into that sort of thing) and instead focused on what I considered to be each episode's best moments. This could be as many or as few as I wanted, and it varied every episode — for the final entry in this season's lists, there are six. I also tossed in some additional observations that didn't fit into the "best moments" category, and I'll do that again in this article at the bottom of the post. For the best moments of earlier episodes this season, click here. Onward!

Cersei's Big Plan

The show laid enough breadcrumbs for us to be able to figure out Cersei's plan before it happened, but that didn't make seeing the execution of it any less spectacular. Margaery realized a little too late that something was off in the Sept of Baelor, the realization played out slowly for the audience, and the suspense built as we saw Lancel Lannister in the underground tunnels. Mad King Aerys' wildfire was put to good use — the candles burned down, and boom. Cersei drank her wine and watched as everyone in the sept got roasted, and we got that glorious shot of the High Sparrow caked in green as the wildfire consumed him from below. RIP, Margaery. You were good at playing the game, but it turns out Cersei was better.

I know this was the longest episode in the show's history, but I wish they had a little more time to show us how Cersei reacted when she first heard the news of Tommen's suicide. She seemed almost numb to it, like she knew there was nothing she could do to stop that horrible prophecy from coming true, and that shot of her sitting on the Iron Throne was chilling. It'll be interesting to see how this new dynamic changes her relationship with Jaime moving forward.

The King in the North

I hesitate to call this one of the "best moments," but it's too big for a small bullet point, so here we are. Sansa apologized to Jon for not telling him about the Knights of the Vale last week, which still doesn't excuse her actions in my mind, but at least she acknowledged it. (She also turned Littlefinger down after his creepy advance.) When Jon was crowned King in the North, I half expected him to give a big speech about how Sansa is the one who deserves the title of Queen in the North, similar to what Theon Greyjoy did at the Kingsmoot. But he just stood there and took all of the praise from the northerners without giving her anything, and the most troubling part of the scene for me was the look Sansa and Littlefinger exchanged. What scheme does Littlefinger already have brewing in his head?

R+L=J Confirmed

This moment was so big, I wrote an entirely separate article about it. Check that out here.

Dany Heads Home

A big part of why I loved this episode so much is because it felt like a culmination of things we've waited years to see. Chief among them was Daenerys Targaryen, armies and dragons in tow, finally setting sail for Westeros. She had to leave Daario behind (bummer), but the scene in which she and Tyrion talked afterwards was one of their best scenes of the season. Emilia Clarke and Peter Dinklage did great work, and the way Dinklage balanced the humorous remarks ("I don't actually own a sword") and fought back tears as he was anointed Hand of the Queen was perfect.

The Red Wedding Avenged

Arya celebrated her homecoming to Westeros by taking revenge against Walder Frey for what he did to her family at The Red Wedding. I'm not entirely sure how she got that girl's face — did she steal it from the House of Black and White before she bailed from Braavos, or kill an innocent serving girl at The Twins? — but either way, she used her Faceless Men training and took him down...but only after feeding him his own sons in a pie. It's complicated: there's a primal part of us that wants to see Arya enact vengeance for all the wrongs that have been done to her and her family, but at the same time, there's something disturbing about seeing her slit a man's throat without batting an eye. She's been on this path for a while, and I wonder how she's going to factor in to the larger war to come.

The Score

Composer Ramin Djawadi earned his paycheck in a huge way here. I'd need to rewatch the series to confirm this, but I feel like music factored into this episode more than any other in Game of Thrones history. I'm not sure whose decision it was, but whoever decided to put a major focus on Djawadi's score made the correct call. In an episode packed with suspense, epic moments, and quiet reflection, the score was essential to its success. These tracks were so good, if they put out an album with just the songs from this episode on it, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Additional Observations

Melisandre burning Shireen at the stake caught up with her as Davos called her out for what she did, and Jon banished her to the south. Sucks to be the Red Woman: she's finally found the Prince That Was Promised, and now she's been ordered away from him. I guess that's why the show couldn't have had this scene play out any earlier in the season. Big ups to Liam Cunningham (Davos), who was terrific in that scene.

Samwell Tarly had a nice little Beauty and the Beast moment in the cavernous library at Oldtown. I was glad we got to check in with him and Gilly again, but also glad we didn't spend too much time with them overall.

Varys' "little birds" can do more than just acquire secrets — they're capable of carrying out assassinations, as Pycelle learned the hard way.

Cersei has done some horrifying things over the course this show, but perhaps the most horrifying is what she's done/is doing to Septa Unella. Leaving her alive as The Mountain's play-thing is some next-level cold blooded shit.

At this point, it seems as if the show has simply given up on trying to reasonably depict travel times. Varys begins in Dorne, but over the course of a single episode, he somehow gets back to Essos to ride back to Dorne with Dany on her boat? OK then.

I love that Lady Olenna survived and is now hanging out in Dorne. Her inclusion in that subplot should finally make those scenes bearable in seasons to come.

What did you think about the season six finale, and the season as a whole?
